In this study, shoals of hatchery‐reared and wild sea bass juveniles (Dicentrarchus labrax L.) were tested for differences in their antipredator responses towards a visual (shadow) and a mechanical (dummy bill) overhead stimulus. Two behavioural variables – distance from the bottom and freezing duration – were measured during post‐stimulus phases of each test and compared between wild and hatchery‐reared shoals, composed of 10 juveniles each. The results showed that in both hatchery‐reared and wild juveniles, stimulus exposure elicited a significant decrease in the mean shoal distance from the bottom. Similarly, individuals from both groups engaged a freezing reaction, but the mean freezing duration was significantly higher in wild‐ than in hatchery‐reared juveniles. Results are discussed in the light of their relevance for the enhancement of restocking programmes.  相似文献

In this study, a scale of quality for the body shape of Gilthead seabream was developed. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was carried out to study the preferences of consumers for the body shape of seabream. Furthermore, the variation in body shape in reared seabream was studied under two rearing environments (sea cages vs. tanks) and in comparison with wild‐caught individuals. Following the test–retest analysis of reliability, the 22 of 65 participants in the survey presented a significant correlation between repeated evaluations of the same subjects and were classified as responders of high discrimination efficiency or/and reliability (HDR). Geometric morphometric analysis on the evaluation of HDR responders revealed that compared with the fish of fair body shape, fish with preferred body shape were characterized mainly by a more proximal position of the base of the pelvic fins, the anterior base of the anal fin and the anterior dorsal fin. Of the 45 wild‐caught specimens examined, 26 presented a normal lateral line and no obvious skeletal deformities. The body shape of the normal wild‐caught fish was compared with the shape of reared seabream. Results showed that both the origin of fish (wild vs. reared) and the rearing methodology during the on‐growing phase significantly affected the body shape of seabream (< 0.001). Compared with the reared fish, the wild‐caught fish were characterized mainly by a less prominent belly, slender trunk, smaller head, shorter caudal peduncle and a more posterior‐ventral position of the upper jaw.  相似文献

The performance of hatchery‐reared juveniles either in aquaculture grow‐out systems or stock enhancement is likely to be dependent on a range of factors during the hatchery phase of production. With recent progress in the development of hatchery systems for the mud crabs Scylla spp., there is growing interest in evaluation of the quality of hatchery‐reared juveniles relative to wild seed crabs as currently used in aquaculture. Hatchery‐reared and wild‐collected Scylla paramamosain juveniles were stocked either together in ponds or separately. All crabs were tagged with microwire‐coded tags, so that origin could be determined in the mixed groups. Preliminary validation demonstrated that tagging did not affect survival or growth, with a tag retention of 94%. After 106 days of culture, there was no significant difference in survival at harvest between the two sources of crabs. The wild juvenile crabs had a significantly higher initial weight:carapace width (CW) ratio compared with those from the hatchery, indicating a difference in condition. However, where crabs were stocked separately, the hatchery‐reared animals exhibited significantly faster growth than those collected from the wild, both in terms of specific growth rate and CW increase per month. However, in the mixed ponds, where there was competition with wild crabs, there was no significant difference in growth rate between crabs from the two sources. Overall, the results demonstrate that the growth performance of hatchery‐reared S. paramamosain can at least equal that of wild‐collected seed crabs in ponds culture.  相似文献

Skeletal deformities are one of the serious problems in hatchery‐reared longtooth grouper (Epinephelus bruneus). In this study, seed production of longtooth grouper was carried out in four large hatchery‐grade tanks. Osteological development of the vertebral column, caudal‐fin skeleton and dorsal‐fin supports in larvae and juveniles was described. The vertebral ontogeny started at 4.8 mm total length (TL) with the formation of neural spines 2 and 3, and the vertebral centra began forming at 5.3 mm TL. By 16 mm TL, all vertebral bony elements were formed except for the dorsal ribs. The onsets of the ontogeny of the caudal‐fin skeleton and dorsal‐fin supports occurred at approximately 5.1 mm and 3.9 mm TL, respectively, and the completion of these bony elements occurred at approximately 20 mm TL. The incidence of deformity was examined; some type of deformity was observed in 57%–68% of the specimens. These deformities mainly occurred as three types: lordosis, around vertebrae 1–5; saddleback‐like syndrome, around vertebrae 7–11; and vertebrae fusion, around vertebrae 22–24. The incidence of prehaemal lordosis was significantly higher among individuals with an uninflated swim bladder than among those with an inflated swim bladder.  相似文献

Abstract. Dorsal fin condition was evaluated in two groups of hatchery-reared steelhead trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), and compared to wild fish. Hatchery fish were reared either in nursery tanks with baffles or in isolation (1 fish/rearing space). Evaluations were conducted to determine differences in dorsal fin condition between these groups and to monitor the progression and severity of fin damage. Isolated hatchery and wild steelhead trout maintained perfect dorsal fins with characteristic white margins. Hatchery fish reared in nursery tanks with baffles experienced dorsal fin erosion that started when the fish were about 40mm total length (30 days after being on feed). This erosion continued until dorsal fin length averaged only 2·3 mm in fish 161–200 mm total length in contrast to an average dorsal fin length of 20·9mm in wild fish of the same size.  相似文献

Estimating components of variance and genetic parameters of economically relevant traits is the first step towards planning a breeding program for aquaculture species. This study estimated the (co)variance components for growth rate and other body traits and then determined a multiple regression equation to assess the loin eye area (LEA) from morphometric traits of the Neotropical aquaculture species Colossoma macropomum. Estimation of variance components was performed using derivative‐free restricted maximum likelihood estimation using the MTDFREML package. Six predictive variables were tested to estimate the coefficient of regression equation and to select the most suitable model for predicting LEA. The estimated genetic parameter for body weight showed moderate‐to‐high heritability estimates of 0.26 (0.01) and 0.49 (0.01) at 221 and 623 days respectively. The genetic correlation (rg) estimates between body size measurements were positive and ranged from low to high at both ages. The heritability for LEA in this assessment was 0.39 (0.03). The genetic and phenotypic correlations between LEA and the other body measurements ranged from 0.16 to 0.94 and 0.75 and 0.90 respectively. The outcomes of this study can contribute to the development of a genetics‐based breeding program that will improve (tambaqui) productivity and carcass quality.  相似文献

An animal's performance during its early life stage can greatly influence its survival to adulthood. Therefore, understanding aspects of early life history can be informative, particularly when designing management plans to rebuild a population. For a threatened population of fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Snake River of Idaho, we reconstructed the early life history for 124 returning wild and hatchery adults using information recorded in their otoliths. Of our sampled wild adults (n = 61), 43% and 49% reared within the Snake River and Clearwater/Salmon rivers. We also found that only 21% of our sampled wild adults exhibited the historically common subyearling out‐migration strategy, in which juveniles exit freshwater shortly after hatching, while the remaining wild adults exhibited the yearling out‐migration strategy (i.e., individuals delay their freshwater exit). As expected, yearlings had, on average, a significantly larger body size than subyearlings at ocean entry. However, 35% of wild yearlings overlapped in size with wild subyearlings suggesting that spending more time in freshwater might not necessarily result in a larger body size. Lastly, we observed that variability in fork length at Snake River egress and ocean entry were best explained by migration strategy and where it reared, followed by hatch year and sex. Results from this study highlight the utility of adult otoliths in providing details about early life history, an understanding of which is critical to the conservation of Snake River fall Chinook salmon.  相似文献

Abalone populations have declined worldwide, generating interest in enhancement using hatchery‐reared individuals. In many cases, such restoration efforts have met with limited success due to high predator‐induced mortality rates. Furthermore, the mortality rates of outplanted hatchery abalone are often considerably higher than for wild individuals. This study uses northern abalone (Haliotis kamtschatkana) as a case study to determine whether hatchery‐reared abalone behave differently than their wild counterparts. In the field, outplanted hatchery‐reared abalone were significantly less responsive than wild abalone, in terms of number of abalone responding and intensity of response, to nearby movement and to physical contact with an inert probe. Also, when encountering a cue to which all abalone responded (a seastar predator), hatchery‐reared individuals remained subdued. Anti‐predator behavioural deficits in hatchery‐reared abalone were more pronounced in 4‐year‐old individuals than in 1‐year‐old individuals, suggesting an influence of either age or amount of time spent in the hatchery environment. These behavioural differences are expected to increase the vulnerability of hatchery‐reared abalone to predators, and are likely a major cause of their elevated predator‐induced mortality when outplanted.  相似文献

The development and testing of a visible implant elastomer pedigree‐marking system was evaluated in sunshine bass, Morone chrysops×Morone saxatilis, and white bass, M. chrysops (Rafinesque). These tags were tested in sunshine bass fingerlings at one of four subdermal body locations (posterior to the eye, dorsal fin musculature, caudal fin musculature or anal fin musculature). Tag visibility decreased with increased sunshine bass growth (63% after 56 days). Visibility differed among body locations, with the caudal and anal tagging locations having lower visibility. White bass fingerlings representing eight genetic groups were then tagged at one of two body locations (left or right subdermal along the dorsal musculature) using one of four fluorescent colours and reared for 42 days in a common garden growth trial. Tag visibility in white bass was 99.5% at 14 days, 98.2% at 28 days and 94.9% at 42 days after tagging. There was a significant change in weight among the eight genetic groups of white bass fingerlings after 42 days (P=0.03). Testing of this pedigree tagging system successfully identified phenotypically different groups of white bass fingerlings.  相似文献

This research, which is part of a larger study designed to assess the feasibility of winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, stock enhancement in New Hampshire, identifies hatchery feeds that optimize feeding‐related performance of fish once released in the wild. Fish reared on post‐nauplii of brine shrimp, Artemia sp., white worms, Enchytraeus albidus, common burrower amphipods, Leptocheirus plumulosus, and formulated pellets were evaluated post‐release from in situ cages using survival, growth rate, feeding onset and incidence, stomach fullness, diet composition, and nucleic acid‐based condition as indicators of hatchery diet suitability. Amphipod‐reared fish had the highest mean stomach content index of all feed types, including wild fish. Wild and worm‐reared fish exhibited the most similar survival, overall stomach fullness, and diet composition profiles over time. Amphipod‐reared fish ranked highest in overall performance; however, if wild fish performance is viewed as the ideal for a stocked fish, worm‐reared fish performed optimally. This study describes hatchery feeding strategies that may ease the transition of flatfish released into the wild for stock enhancement.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   In relation to the stock enhancement program for barfin flounder, hatchery juveniles produced in 2001 were genotyped using microsatellite DNA markers (msDNA) and then released to natural waters. Subsequently, recaptured individuals, designated as 'tentative recaptured', were examined using msDNA. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the stock enhancement program, pairwise F ST and genic differentiation tests were used to estimate the genetic divergence between the wild samples, the hatchery broodstock, and the tentative recaptured samples. Analysis showed significant differentiation among these three groups. Pedigree determination by msDNA was used to establish the origin of the tentative recaptured individuals, in order to elucidate whether they were hatchery produced, 'real recaptured', or wild specimens. Wild individuals were not found. The effective population size of the real recaptured stock was very low ( N e = 16.6). Equal family survivability was observed between the released and real recaptured stocks, indicating that the genetic variability of the released stock was maintained in the natural environment. Future broodstock management, breeding designs, and family contribution equalization of the offspring to be released will be required in this rare species to avoid unintended genetic differentiation between the wild population and the hatchery broodstock.  相似文献

Many studies have documented that hatchery‐reared salmonids generally have inferior survival after being stocked compared with wild conspecifics, hatchery and wild salmonids have been observed to differ in their antipredator responses. The response of brown trout (Salmo trutta) juveniles (0+) of differing backgrounds to a live predator was compared in two experiments. First, the antipredator behaviour of predator‐naïve hatchery‐reared brown trout and wild‐exposed brown trout were assessed in behavioural trials which lasted for eight days. Second, predator‐naïve and predator‐conditioned hatchery‐reared brown trout were assessed in identical behavioural trials. Brown trout were ‘predator‐conditioned’ by being held in a stream‐water aquarium with adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and adult brown trout for two days prior to behavioural trials. Predator‐conditioned hatchery‐reared brown trout spent more time in shelters in the trial aquaria than predator‐naïve hatchery‐reared fish, but did not differ in time spent in the predator‐free area. Predator conditioning may account for the increased time spent in the shelter, but does not appear to have affected time spent in the predator‐free area. However, even if significant alteration in behaviour can be noted in the laboratory, the response might not be appropriate in the wild.  相似文献

Four clonal lines of ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, were produced from mitotic-gynogenetic diploids, mixed before hatching and reared communally. After 9 months, the clonal fish were sacrificed for measurement of body size, morphometric relationships, and meristic counts. DNA fingerprinting was used to confirm the clonal nature of the fish and to identify the clonal line of origin for each fish.

Significant differences were observed among clonal lines for almost all body size, morphometric and meristic measures. Such differences are suggested to represent genotypic difference among clonal lines given the common environmental conditions provided to all the experimental groups, assuming that the genotype-environment interaction was negligible.

By applying the human twin model, genetic and environmental variances in the clonal population was estimated after the clonal lines were separated by DNA fingerprinting. Heritability estimates for data collected at 9 months were relatively high for body size and varied from low to high in meristic and morphometric traits. These results suggest the possible usage of clonal lines as a control fish for estimation of heritability of traits important to aquaculture.  相似文献

Supportive breeding of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is commonly employed to maintain numbers of fish where the species has become locally endangered. Increasingly, one of the main aims of population management is the preservation of natural genetic diversity. If the stocks employed in supportive breeding exhibit reduced variation they can alter the natural pattern of genetic variation observed in wild populations. In northern Spain, wild adult salmon are caught every year from local rivers and artificially crossed in order to create supportive stocks. The offspring are hatchery reared until the juvenile stage, then released into the same river where their parents were caught. In the current study, our findings demonstrate that although adult broodstock exhibit a pattern of variation similar to the wild populations, variability at microsatellite loci was drastically reduced in the juveniles released into one of three rivers analyzed. The contribution of broodstock to this juvenile stock was examined by pedigree analysis. A restricted number of females contributing to the hatchery stock was identified as the main cause of loss in genetic variation, possibly due to overmaturity of some multi-sea-winter females. We suggest that better monitoring and control of parental contribution will help in solving the problem of loss of genetic diversity in hatchery populations.  相似文献

Blunt snout bream (Megalobrama amblycephala) is an herbivorous freshwater fish species native to China and has been recognized as a main aquaculture species in the Chinese freshwater polyculture system with high economic value. The genetic parameter estimates for important economic traits are needed for its selective breeding. The aim of this study was to estimate the heritabilities for its growth‐related traits and explore the genetic and phenotypic correlations among the traits using microsatellite‐based pedigree approach. Offspring from a mass‐spawning of 92 broodstocks (42 sires and 50 dams) were reared in a communal pond and nine microsatellites were used to identify the parents of each sampled offspring. Of 749 offspring randomly selected, 708 (94.53%) could be assigned directly to a single parental pair, which was used for heritability estimates. Data were analysed using the method of restricted maximum likelihood (REML) using animal model and the results showed that the heritabilities of body weight, body length, total length and body height were 0.65, 0.53, 0.53 and 0.50, respectively. High genetic correlations were found among these four traits. According to these results, selection for growth seems to be feasible in M. amblycephala and the other growth traits will be heightened accordingly with the selection based on body length.  相似文献

An increasing demand for stocking of hatchery-reared ayu, Plecoglossus altivelis, has aroused concerns about their genetic status which has an effect on their post-stocking performance and the conservation of native biodiversity. Instead of costly analysis, fluctuating asymmetry (FA) was examined to test its suitability as an indirect measure of genetic diversity. Two bilateral traits, pectoral and pelvic fin rays, were targeted, and two wild and four hatchery populations of ayu were sampled for comparison. Frequency of FA in soft-rays was not similar between specimens in both pelvic and pectoral fins. The wild populations did not show FA incidences lower than the hatchery populations, suggesting a considerable degree of environmental stress operating in the wild populations. Comparison between the hatchery populations showed overall increasing FA incidence with the decrease in genetic diversity, although the correlation was not complete in detail. In conclusion, FA can be used as a convenient tool to compare genetic status, but quantified evaluation is rather limited to monitoring changes in the genetic variation within a hatchery population.  相似文献

Tuna aquaculture is currently dependent on the wild capture of juveniles for production. The development of hatchery technology for bluefin and other tunas would be a major step forward in improving sustainability of their aquaculture. The present study overviews the technology in the life cycle completion of the Pacific bluefin tuna (PBT) Thunnus orientalis (Temminck et Schlegel) under aquaculture conditions in Kinki University, and the problems to be solved for the establishment of tuna hatchery technology. On 23 June 2002, broodstock of PBT that were artificially hatched and reared spontaneously spawned in captivity. The resulting eggs hatched and were subsequently reared to the juvenile stage. The spawning fish were the result of a research project started in 1987 to rear wild‐caught juvenile PBT that were several months old. Fertilized eggs were obtained from these fish in 1995 and 1996. Resulting juveniles (the artificially hatched first generation) were reared to maturity and spawned in 2002. Over the summer of 2002, 1.63 million eggs from these fish were used for a mass rearing experiment, and 17 307 juveniles were produced and transferred to an open sea net cage. Of these artificially hatched second‐generation PBT, 1100 grew to approximately 95 cm total length and 14 kg body weight in 22 months. This procedure means the completion of PBT life cycle under aquaculture conditions, which was first attained among large tuna species. The problems awaiting solution in PBT hatchery production are their unpredictable spawning in captivity, to improve survival during the first 10 days post hatch, to reduce cannibalism in larval and juvenile stages, and to solve collision problem causing high mortality during the juvenile stage.  相似文献
