Mast cell numbers in normal and glaucomatous canine eyes   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Numbers of mast cells in the cornea, sclera, choroid, ciliary body, iris, and retina of sections of globes from 35 clinically normal dogs and 34 dogs with secondary glaucoma was determined. Fixed globes were trimmed along a vertical midsagittal plane and embedded in paraffin. Tissue sections, approximately 6 microns thick, were stained with toluidine blue for identification of mast cells. In normal globes, most of the mast cells were observed in the anterior portion of the uvea, and fewer mast cells were seen in the choroid and sclera. Mast cells were not observed in the retina and were seldom observed in the cornea of dogs with or without glaucoma. In sections of glaucomatous globes, mast cells were distributed evenly in the uvea and sclera, and fewer mast cells were present than in normal globes, regardless of the cause of glaucoma.  相似文献

Goniodysgenesis, malformation of the filtration angle, was observed in a New Zealand white rabbit supplied with 100 g/day rabbit chow containing 0.2% cholesterol for 10 months. Histopathology revealed cupping of the optic disc, atrophy of the retina and hyalinization of the ciliary body in the bilateral eyeballs. These findings corresponded with histopathological features caused by glaucoma. On the basis of these findings, we diagnosed this lesion as glaucoma, and classified it as primary glaucoma because of the presence of developmental defects of the filtration angle. In this case, hypercholesterolemia-induced changes, such as aggregation of lipid-laden macrophages and cholesterin clefts in the sclera or choroid, might cause deterioration of the lesions in glaucoma.  相似文献

Objective This study analyzed the morphology of the California sea lion globe to determine what features may contribute to their characteristic visual abilities. Procedure Globes from the Comparative Ocular Pathology Laboratory of Wisconsin (COPLOW) collection were examined from gross photographs and microscopic sections stained with hematoxylin and eosin, trichrome, smooth muscle actin, and alcian blue periodic acid–Schiff (PAS). Transmission electron microscopy of the cornea and iris was also performed. Clinical results There was a round, flattened area ventromedial to the axial cornea. The pupil was tear‐drop shaped. Pectinate ligaments were visible without magnification. The retina was holangiotic, containing numerous spoke‐like venules and arterioles. The tapetum was green encompassing the entire fundus. The optic nerve was unmyelinated. Histological results The sclera was thinnest equatorially and thickest at the limbus and posterior pole. Bowman’s layer was difficult to see by light microscopy but clear with transmission electron microscopy. The cornea had a thick epithelium, thin endothelium and Descemet’s membrane, and the stroma thinned axially. The dilator muscle was absent near the pupil, but enlarged and mingled with the sphincter muscle near the iris base. A large, wide ciliary cleft with prominent trabeculae and a single continuous pectinate ligament was present. The corneoscleral trabecular meshwork was discontinuous. A round lens attached to the ciliary body via direct attachment to ciliary processes and delicate zonular ligaments. There was a circumferential muscle at the base of the ciliary processes. A thick tapetum covered the entire fundus except peripherally. The retina was characterized by sparse, large ganglion cells.  相似文献

Blue discoloration of the iris was found in the left eye of a male laboratory Beagle dog, which had a normal tricolor coat and clinically showed no visual impairment. Ophthalmoscopically, the affected eye revealed red-colored tigroid fundus, in which no tapetum was present. The retinal vasculature and the optic disc showed no noticeable changes. Histopathologically, in the left eye melanocytes had extremely few melanin granules in the anterior segment, including the anterior border layer, in the stroma and sphincter muscle of the iris and in the stroma of the ciliary body and choroid. However, the posterior pigment epithelium of the iris, the pigment epithelium of the ciliary body and the retinal pigment epithelium showed normal pigmentation. The tapetal elements were completely absent. Number and distribution of the S-100 protein-positive melanocytes with or without melanin granules in the iris, ciliary body and choroid of the left eye were similar to those of the normal right eye. Ultrastructurally, melanocytes in the anterior segment of the affected iris possessed no or few melanosomes which were incompletely melanized. In the right eye, no abnormal features were observed. Based on these results, the present case was diagnosed as unilateral ocular subalbinism with tapetal aplasia in a Beagle dog.  相似文献

The microvasculature of the eyes of 5 rabbits was investigated using scanning electron microscopy on corrosion casts. The study revealed that the pars plana vessels draining blood from the iris and ciliary body coursed directly into the anterior vortex venous system constituting the scleral venous plexus (the venous circle of Hovius). The episcleral vasculature was found to possess a specialized morphology, with channels draining the aqueous humor. The capillaries of the third palpebral, bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva formed a single-layered capillary network approximately parallel to the epithelium and formed a well-developed venous plexus in the stroma. The retina was found to be merangiotic, meaning that vessels were present only in a small part of the retina, extending in a horizontal direction to form bands on either side of the optic disc. Channels representing the aqueous veins that drained blood mixed with aqueous humor were found to derive directly from the suprachoroidal space and communicate with the scleral venous plexus via the anterior vortex veins. The functional significance of the microvasculature of the iris, cilia, retina and choroid is discussed in this report as well. The elaborate microvasculature of the conjunctiva may be a prerequisite for the exchange of nutrients and gasses between the cornea and the vessels across the conjunctival epithelium when the eyelids are shut during sleep, and possibly for the dynamics of eye drop delivery. The scleral venous plexus in rabbits may be analogous to the scleral venous sinus (Schlemm's canal) in rats, primates and humans.  相似文献

The ocular lesions of bovine malignant catarrhal fever were characterized in 15 naturally occurring and eight experimentally induced cases of the disease. Consistent findings included: lymphocytic vasculitis of retinal, scleral, posterior ciliary, and uveal vessels; uveitis, especially involving ciliary processes, ciliary body, and iris; and keratitis with corneal edema, neovascularization, and epithelial and endothelial degeneration. Lymphocytic ciliary neuritis and optic meningitis were found less frequently. Ultrastructural examination of the ciliary body and iris from one experimental calf confirmed that most infiltrating mononuclear cells were lymphocytes. The uveitis, vasculitis, and keratitis of malignant catarrhal fever were probably immune-mediated.  相似文献

The microvasculature of the eye of 10 pigs was investigated using scanning electron micrographs of corrosion casts. The ciliary body, iris and bulbar conjunctiva were supplied by the iridociliary ring artery via the long posterior ciliary artery. Capillaries of the ciliary process were of large diameter (23.2-27.5 microm) with an irregular bore, forming a thoroughfare channel draining blood in the ciliary arterioles into the pars plana venous vessels. Arterioles and venules in the iris exhibited a zigzag or spiral features. The third palpebra was supplied by the anterior ciliary artery. The capillary bed of the third palpebra was dense and was formed by many rows of fine hair-pin loops. Capillaries in the bulbar conjunctiva formed a sparse network disposing approximately parallel to the epithelium and formed a well-developed venous plexus, draining into the vortex veins. Retinal arterioles formed a slender and long course to capillaries. Retinal capillaries were extremely thin (3.0-4.0 microm in diameter). The choroid was supplied by the short posterior ciliary arteries. Choroidal arterioles exhibited a thick and short course to the choriocapillaris. The choriocapillaris was flat and sinusoid-like (8.9-13.9 microm in diameter), forming a dense sheet-like network. Blood from the choroid emptied into the episcleral vein via the vortex vein. Blood from the retina was drained by the posterior ciliary veins. The functional significance of this vascular architecture was discussed.  相似文献

Fourteen albino rabbits were inoculated intravenously with 103.5-104.0 mouse ICLD50 of Chlamydia psittaci (strain M56) of mammalian origin. Ocular lesions accompanied the chlamydial infection in the rabbits. Bilateral anterior uveitis, a common occurrence, began on the second or third day and subsided by the tenth day whereas keratoconjunctivitis was observed infrequently. After 15 days the most prominent microscopic lesion was iritis. Accumulations of inflammatory cells, mainly plasma cells, were observed in the iris and ciliary body and elementary bodies were found infrequently in macrophages.

Chlamydiae were recovered consistently by conjunctival swabbing from the fifth to the twenty-fourth day. The agent was present within the eye (viz. iris-ciliary body) in three of four rabbits killed at 15 days and in five of ten rabbits killed 60 days after inoculation. Chlamydiae had persisted in the cerebrum and joints as well. Although neutralizing antibody was consistently present in sera at 60 days none of the samples of aqueous humor were capable of neutralizing the agent.

It is suggested that systemic chlamydial infections in the rabbit provide a model for the study of endogenous uveitis, a common ophthalmological problem.

An 18-year-old male donkey was referred with a history of blindness. On ocular examination a complete bilateral typical colobomatous defect involving iris, ciliary body, lens, choroid, retina and optic nerve was observed. An optic pit was presented at the temporal side of the right optic head. Ophthalmoscopic and fluorangiographic characteristics are described.  相似文献

Pseudorabies virus (PRV) was inoculated intraocularly into BALB/c mice, and the distribution pattern of cells positive for several neurotransmitters and viral antigens in the eyeball, trigeminal nerve ganglia, and superior cervical ganglia was examined immunohistochemically to clarify the neural route of the virus spread. In the eyeball, substance P (SP)- and calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-positive cells were detected in the ipsilateral iris and ciliary body, neuropeptide tyrosine (NPY)-positive cells were detected in the choloid membrane, and tyrosine hydroxylase (TH)-positive cells were detected in the ipsilateral inner nuclear layer of the retina; all these cells contained viral antigens. In the superior cervical ganglia, viral antigen-positive cells containing TH or NPY were found at bilateral sites. In the trigeminal nerve ganglia, viral antigen-positive cells containing SP or CGRP were found at bilateral sites. These findings indicated that the SP- and CGRP-positive ganglion cells of the trigeminal nerve ganglia innervating the iris or ciliary body, and the NPY-positive ganglion cells of the superior cervical ganglia innervating the iris, ciliary body, and choroid membrane served as the route for the virus spread. These findings also suggested that dopaminergic neurons, such as the TH-positive retinal cells and TH-positive ganglion cells of the superior cervical ganglia, served as the route for virus spread.  相似文献

The architecture of the retina, choroid and anterior eye segment was investigated in 12 Syrian hamsters using scanning electron micrographs of methylmethacrylate corrosion casts. The hamster eye receives its primary blood supply from the long posterior ciliary artery, which directly enters the optic nerve head, and divides into three branches: the central retinal artery and medial and lateral long posterior ciliary arteries. In the retina the central retinal artery divides into six radiating branches. Retinal arterioles form a slender and long course to capillaries. Retinal capillaries are extremely thin in diameter and form a sparse capillary network. The choroid is supplied by the long posterior ciliary arteries. Choroidal arterioles exhibit a thick and short course to the choriocapillaris. The choriocapillaris is thick and sinusoid-like, forming a dense network in the choroid. The ciliary body, iris and bulbar conjunctiva are supplied by the anterior ciliary arteries, which are branches of the long posterior ciliary arteries. Capillaries supplying the anterior margin of the ciliary process are large in diameter with an irregular bore, forming a thoroughfare channel draining blood in the ciliary arterioles into the pars plana vessels. Blood from the retina is drained by the central retinal veins. Venules from the anterior eye segment empty into the vortex veins via the pars plana vessels. Venous blood from the choroid is drained only by vortex veins via the choroidal veins. The functional significance of the vascular architecture and species differences are discussed.  相似文献

The uvea of the eye is divided into the anterior uvea (iris and ciliary body) and posterior uvea (choroid). Clinical signs of anterior uveitis include conjunctival hyperemia, corneal edema, aqueous flare, miosis, and a decrease in intraocular pressure. Inflammation of the posterior uvea often involves the retina as well resulting in a chorioretinitis. Clinical signs of chorioretinitis may include multifocal lesions in tapetal or nontapetal fundus, retinal detachment, and a decrease in vision. The etiology of uveitis is complex and includes numerous infectious, neoplastic, immune-mediated, and other diseases. Treatment is directed at the underlying systemic disease, if present, as well as symptomatic treatment for the eye. The diagnostic and therapeutic approach to a patient with uveitis is discussed.  相似文献

Equine uveitis.
Uveitis (inflammation of the iris, ciliary body, or choroid) is a potentially blinding condition with a significant economic impact on the horse industry. Variable symptoms are described, as well as a considerable range of structural and functional sequelae. Known causes of initial episodes include bacterial, viral, traumatic, and parasitic insults, with recurrence by immunologic mechanisms. Treatment strategies and management recommendations that may reduce the incidence or severity of episodes are discussed.  相似文献

Effects of atherosclerosis on the mean value and daily variation of arterial pressure were studied in 12 Watanabe-heritable hyperlipidemic (WHHL) rabbits aged 12 to 35 months and 25 normal Japanese white rabbits aged 6 to 30 months. A pressure catheter was inserted through the left subclavian artery under pentobarbital anesthesia. A few days after the catheterization, the mean arterial pressure (MAP) of the rabbits, which were active and in a good state of appetite, was recorded by an analogue-to-digital converter every second for about 6 hrs and stored in a computer. The mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) in the WHHL rabbit, calculated from each successive MAP record, ranged widely from 85.8 to 131.4 mmHg and 5.6 to 12.6 mmHg, respectively. There was no significant correlation between M and SD in the WHHL rabbit. M and variance (V) of MAP in the WHHL rabbit were significantly higher than those in the normal rabbit. M did not show any significant change with increasing ages, whereas SD increased significantly with aging in the WHHL rabbit. Concentrations of serum total cholesterol and triglyceride in the WHHL rabbit were 475 and 328 mg/dl, which were about nine and seven times as high as those in the normal rabbit, respectively. Macroscopic and histopathological examinations of the aorta revealed development and spread of sclerotic lesions with aging in the WHHL rabbit. We can conclude that development of atherosclerosis with aging in the WHHL rabbit causes malfunction of the baroreceptors, which contributes to hypertension and lability of arterial pressure.  相似文献

Transabdominal ultrasonography was performed to visualize the development of intraocular structures of both eyes of four different fetuses in each of two pregnant beagles. Postnatally the development of both eyes of 11 pups was visualized with ultrasonography. Furthermore, biometric measurements of the length of the eye, the depth of cornea, the anterior chamber, the lens (anteroposterior depth and equatorial diameter), and the vitreous body of the fetuses and pups were obtained when these structures could be identified with ultrasonography. In all fetuses the eyes with lens, vitreous body, hyaloid artery, and scleroretinal rim could be clearly identified from day 37 of pregnancy. Postnatally also the cornea, anterior chamber, iris, ciliary body, and optic disc were visible. Biometric measurements revealed, both pre- and postnatally, a continuous growth of the depth of the eye, anterior chamber, lens (anteroposterior depth and equatorial diameter), and vitreous body.  相似文献

Histologic examination of eyes and brains of 27 dogs experimentally infected with either Ehrlichia canis, E. ewingii, E. chaffeensis, or human granulocytic ehrlichia (HGE) was conducted in the course of several experiments, the primary objectives of which were to investigate the susceptibility of the domestic dog to infection with various ehrlichial species and to assess the ability of ixodid tick species to acquire and transmit those infections. Uveitis and meningitis occurred in each of the dogs infected with E. canis but was not observed in dogs infected with the other Ehrlichia species. The inflammatory infiltrate was predominantly lymphocytic, monocytic, and plasmacytic; granulocytes were notably few. Ocular inflammation was most common and most intense in the ciliary body, becoming less intense in the choroid, iris, and retina, respectively. Meningitis was often accompanied by mild neuroparenchymal vascular cuffing and gliosis. The meningeal inflammatory cell infiltrate included a prominent monocyte population. Ocular and meningeal lesions were present in all E. canis-infected dogs from 22 through 200 days postexposure. Neither ocular nor brain lesions were observed with any of the other ehrlichial infections.  相似文献

Atypical primary ocular melanoma in cats   总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
The clinical and pathologic features of six cases of atypical primary ocular melanoma in cats are described. In contrast to diffuse iris melanomas, these atypical tumors originated multifocally from any portion of the uvea and in five of the six cases were very advanced at the time of clinical presentation. Two of the advanced cases involved primarily the ciliary body, while three others showed extensive involvement of the choroid. Histologically, these tumors consisted primarily of round, heavily pigmented cells lacking the anaplastic nuclear features characteristic of advanced diffuse iris melanomas. The advanced stage of the tumors at presentation may have been due to either the posterior uveal origin of these tumors or to more rapid progression. Additional cases with long-term follow-up need to be studied in order to accurately assess the biological behaviour of these tumors.  相似文献

This paper describes the more common inherited eye conditions in the dog and cat, paying particular attention to the newer conditions, not all of which have previously been reported in the literature. These newer conditions include entropion in the shar pei, microphthalmos in the dobermann and miniature schnauzer, cataract in the German shepherd dog and Norwegian buhund, progressive retinal atrophy in the Tibetan terrier, Tibetan spaniel, miniature longhaired dachshund and two forms in the Abyssinian cat, multifocal retinal dysplasia in the English springer spaniel and other breeds, persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous in the Staffordshire bull terrier and dobermann and optic nerve hypoplasia in the toy poodle. Anatomical classification presents a convenient means of describing these conditions which may affect the whole globe, the eyelids, the nictitating membrane, the nasolacrimal duct system, the conjunctiva, the cornea, the aqueous, the iris, the lens and zonule, the vitreous, the retina, the choroid and sclera and the optic nerve.  相似文献

The effects of a mesogenic strain of Newcastle disease virus on ocular and paraocular structures were studied in 10-to-12-week-old chickens inoculated conjunctivally, intraocularly, intracerebrally, or intravenously. Paraffin-embedded tissues were examined by light and fluorescent microscopy using conventional staining and immunohistochemistry. Lesions were most severe in intraocularly inoculated chickens, where a marked iridocyclochoroiditis was evident from 8-12 hours up to 21 days postinfection. Viral antigens were detected in the iris, ciliary body, Schlemm's canal, and occasionally the lens, choroid, and base of the pecten. Although optic neuritis and iridocyclochoroiditis were found in intracerebrally inoculated birds, no viral antigens were detected in the optic nerve.  相似文献

Aquaporins (AQPs) function as water channels in many types of cells involved in fluid transport. More than 10 isoforms have been identified, and these are differentially expressed in many types of mammalian cells in the body. Six AQPs (AQP0, AQP1, AQP3, AQP4, AQP5, and AQP9) have been identified in the eyes of humans and/or rodents. The unique permeability characteristics and distribution of AQPs indicate their diverse roles in the regulation of water homeostasis in the eye. The aim of this study was to investigate the localisation of AQPs in normal canine eyes, with AQP0 protein expressed in the crystalline lens and retina. Although AQP1 mRNA was detected in various areas of the canine eye, its protein expression was limited to the cornea, iris and ciliary body. AQP4 was identified in the iris, retina and optic nerve. AQP3 and AQP5 were found in the cornea and conjunctiva, and their expression was particularly high in the limbus. AQP3 and AQP5 were present in the nictitating membrane indicating that they play a role in water transport within the membrane. The observations suggested that several subtypes of the AQP family are involved in the regulation of water homeostasis in the canine eye.  相似文献
