The influence of N in slurry or in mineral fertilizers on herbage yield and nitrogen fixation by white clover grown in mixed swards was investigated. Two levels of N in cattle slurry were compared with a range of mineral N fertilization. The percentage of N derived from symbiosis (% Nsym) was measured by the 15N-isotope dilution method. The measurements were made in spring 1987 in two 4-year-old field trials, and included two out of five harvests.
The % Nsym was approximately 90% without N fertilization. It decreased in response to both mineral N and N in slurry but did not fall below 63%. The sum of two harvests revealed that 51·2 kg N ha−1 were fixed in the absence of N fertilization. With 75 kg mineral N ha−1 or 50 m3 cattle slurry ha−1, the yield of fixed N decreased to 17·2 and 24·9 kg ha−1, respectively. When compared on the basis of the fertilizer effect on dry matter yield and N concentration of perennial ryegrass, the decrease in yield of N fixed due to treatment with cattle slurry was less than that due to mineral N fertilizer. This was owing to the smaller extent of the depression in the proportion of white clover in the sward when the same amount of N was applied in cattle slurry, as compared with mineral fertilizer, although % Nsym responded similarly to both types of N fertilization.  相似文献

The implications for UK upland sheep systems of reducing nitrogen fertilizer application to perennial ryegrass/white clover swards were studied over 3 years. Sward height (3·5–5·5 cm) was controlled for ewes with lambs until weaning using surplus pasture areas for silage; thereafter, ewes and weaned lambs were grazed on separate areas, and sward height was controlled by adjusting the size of the areas grazed and using surplus pasture areas for silage if necessary. Combinations from three stocking rates [10, 6 and 4 ewes ha−1 on the total area (grazed and ensiled)] and four nitrogen fertilizer levels (150, 100, 50 and 0 kg ha−1) provided six treatments that were replicated three times. Average white clover content was negatively correlated with level of nitrogen fertilizer. The proportion of white clover in the swards increased over the duration of the experiment. Control of sward height and the contribution from white clover resulted in similar levels of lamb liveweight gain on all treatments. All treatments provided adequate winter fodder as silage. It is concluded that the application of nitrogen fertilizer can be reduced or removed from upland sheep pastures without compromising individual animal performance provided that white clover content and sward height are maintained. Resting pastures from grazing by changing ensiled and grazed areas from year to year sustained white clover content over a 3-year period.  相似文献

The expected reduction in the use of fertilizer nitrogen (N) on grassland in the Netherlands has led to renewed interest in white clover. Therefore, the performance of a newly sown perennial ryegrass/white clover sward on clay soil was assessed during 4 consecutive years. The experiment consisted of all combinations of two defoliation systems, i.e. one or two silage cuts per year (S1, S2), spring N application rate, i.e. 0 or 50 kg ha−1 year−1 (N0, N50), and the management system, i.e. rotational grazing and cutting, or cutting only (RGC, CO). The overall mean white clover cover was 30%. All treatments affected white clover cover, which was 8% higher with S2 than with S1, 6% higher with N0 than with N50 and 12% higher with CO than with RGC. The overall mean annual dry-matter (DM) yield (13·1 t ha−1 year−1) was significantly affected only by the management system: in two relatively wetter years, the annual DM yield was 1·19 t ha−1 higher with RGC than with CO, whereas there was no difference in two relatively drier years. Nitrogen application increased the DM yield in the first cut by 7·0 kg kg−1 N applied, but had no significant effect on the annual DM yield. Herbage quality was not affected by the experimental treatments. The average in vitro organic matter digestibility was 0.801, and the average crude protein content was 193 g kg−1 DM. With the expected reduction in the use of fertilizer N, perennial ryegrass/white clover swards should be seriously considered as an alternative option to perennial ryegrass swards on these clay soils.  相似文献

Management treatments were applied to an established ryegrass/white clover sward with the aim of producing differences in clover content. The treatments were: mowing (M) with no fertilizer N (intended to give high clover), grazing by cattle (C) with no fertilizer N (medium clover) and grazing by sheep (S) with 300 kg N ha−1 applied (low clover). Following treatments significant differences ( P < 0.001) were observed, with M, C and S containing respectively. 237, 81 and 3 kg DM ha−1 of live clover. Treatment M swards had fewer ryegrass tillers but greater numbers of clover growing points than did treatment S, with values being intermediate on treatment C. Following overwintering most of the differences in the clover component between treatments C and M were lost, but those on treatment S still persisted. Management can be used to manipulate the botanical composition of ryegrass/white clover swards, but these changes may be only transient.  相似文献

The effects of stocking rate and N fertilizer on a mixed sward of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne) and white clover ( Trifolium repens ) set-stocked with sheep were examined. Sward production and composition, and sheep production were studied.
Increasing the stocking rate over the range 25–55 yearling sheep ha−1 reduced herbage accumulation by about 40%, whether or not N fertilizer was applied. Increasing the stocking rate increased the density of ryegrass tillers, but reduced the density of clover stolons and the clover content of the swards. Applications of N fertilizer (200 kg N ha−1 a−1) increased herbage accumulation by about 20% but substantially reduced the clover content.
Liveweight gain per animal and per unit area were greater at the lower stocking rates where the clover content and nutritive value of the diet were greatest. Wool growth per unit area was greater at the higher stocking rates. Applications of 1M fertilizer increased liveweight gain at stocking rates above 25 sheep ha−1, but had no effect on wool production at any stocking rate.
The results demonstrate that a stable and productive grass-clover association was maintained under conditions of set-stocking at around 23 yearling sheep ha−1and that at this stocking rate, which appears to be about the biological optimum, there was no advantage in using N fertilizer.  相似文献

The annual contribution of clover to a mixed sward for 5 years was compared for a range of cultivars, viz. S1OO, Sabeda, Blanca and Olwen, in order of increasing leaf size. The contribution referred to as'clover-derived nitrogen N', was measured as the difference between N harvested in mixed swards and that in similarly treated swards devoid of clover. The swards were harvested four or five times each year and received N fertilizer, annually, at 0, 30, 60 or 90 kg N ha−1 in March.
Blanca swards had the highest clover-derived N yield in the second year and lowest in the fourth year. By the fifth year Sabeda and S100 (medium leaved cultivars) were contributing more N than the other two cultivars. When related to the amount of clover harvested, S100 had the highest value in the second year and S100 and Sabeda in the third year. Relating the total lover-derived N harvested over the 5 years to the amount of clover harvested, S100 had an efficiency of contribution of 54-3 kg N t−1 dry matter (DM) compared to a mean of 49 0 kg N t−1 clover DM for the other three cultivars. Nitrogen fertilizer reduced the contribution of clover N in the first 3 years owing to a reduction in clover yield, but it did not affect clover's efficiency to contribute N.
It is concluded that although the smallest leaved type of the four (S100) made the most efficient N contribution to the sward more information is required to relate morphology of clover to its capability to contribute N directly or indirectly to the sward.  相似文献

Red clover cv. Hungaropoly was slot-seeded into a perennial ryegrass-dominant sward in April 1979. Glyphosate and paraquat were applied separately as bandsprays each at two doses and at two band widths. Control plots were either slot-seeded without a herbicide bandspray or received ±150 kg N ha−1 a−1. Red clover establishment was assessed and amounts of dry matter (DM) and total N accumulated were measured at two harvests in 1979 and three harvests in 1980. Bandspraying increased seedling vigour and development and resulted in the eventual replacement of 1 t grass DM ha−1 by an equivalent amount of red clover. Of the treatment variables investigated, bandspray width had the greatest influence on red clover establishment and productivity. The slot-seeded area, meaned for all treatments, produced a total of 6.40 and 13.16 t DM ha−1 in 1979 and 1980. This was estimated to be equivalent to the all-grass sward receiving 112 kg N ha−1 a−1 during the second year of the experiment or 238 kg N ha−1 over the 2 years when measured in terms of N yield. The potential productivity of perennial ryegrass/ white clover swards (GC) under continuous stocking management was assessed by comparing their performance, when grazed by sheep at sward surface heights of 3, 6 and 9 cm, with that of an all–grass sward (G) maintained at 6 cm and fertilized with 420 kg N ha–1 The grass/clover swards received no nitrogen fertilizer. The different grazing treatments had a marked effect on animal performance. In the first year for example, for treatments GC3, GC6, GC9 and G6–420 respectively, mean stocking rates to weaning were 19–7, 14–3, 8–9 and 18–4 ewes ha–1 (plus twin lambs); lamb growth rates were 223, 268, 295 and 260 g d–1and so total lamb live weight gain was 1054, 920, 630 and 1148 kg h a–1. The relative performance of the treatments was similar in all three years. All three grazing treatments had a similar effect on the composition of the grass/clover swards. Clover content increased in 1985, and was sustained in 1986 and 1987 during the main grazing season, although a marked decline in clover content during the winter led to a progressive long–term decline in both the proportion and the amount of clover.
It is suggested that a management based on maintaining a sward surface height close to 6 cm (as in all–grass swards) leads to optimum performance in grass/white clover swards grazed using continuous stocking with sheep. Despite the presence of a small and declining clover content, the output of the mixed grass/clover sward managed in this way was 80%, 80% and 82% of that of a grass sward supplied with 420 kg N ha–1 in 1985, 1986, and 1987 respectively and, similarly, 83% of the output in 1987 of a grass sward receiving 210 kg N ha–1.  相似文献

Twelve plots were laid down on an existing perennial ryegrass/white clover sward, one plot in each of six replicated blocks receiving 100 kg  N ha−1 (100N) and one plot receiving no N (0N). Biomass, canopy development (stratified cuts and point quadrat records at 2–4-week intervals) and changes in stolon population density were recorded during one 8-week regrowth period (25 July–23 September) to investigate the likely causes of N effects on white clover in mixed swards.
Over the period, N fertilizer resulted in an increase of 74% in perennial ryegrass biomass and a reduction of 24% in white clover biomass. There was also a reduction of 44% in stolon growing point density, mainly due to lower density of younger stolon branches. White clover's contribution to the upper three leaf area index (LAI) units (taken as an estimate of the proportion of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) intercepted) was, on average, 70% at 0N producing 74% of the sward biomass, compared with 46% contribution to interception and 37% contribution to biomass at 100N.
While there was no evidence of overtopping, it is concluded that N fertilizer application increased the LAI of perennial ryegrass in the upper layers of the canopy thereby reducing the share of available PAR to white clover. This, coupled with a lower radiation use efficiency at high N and lower population density, results in white clover's reduced performance in mixed swards receiving N fertilizer.  相似文献

The growth of on‐farm anaerobic digestion (AD) has generated significant quantities of digestate for use as a soil amendment. However, relative to other organic and inorganic fertilizers, only limited field trial data exist on the effect of repeated applications of digestate to temperate grasslands. Here, we compare yields and grass quality (protein and digestibility) from a field trial of a mixed pasture ley (ryegrass and clover), following the application of five different fertilizer types (liquid digestate generated from anaerobically digested slurry, dry fibre digestate, undigested slurry, ammonium nitrate and an NPK compound fertilizer) in comparison with a no‐fertilizer control. Application rates were normalized in terms of nitrogen (N) and were added as a split dose, with 100 kg N/ha added prior to the first harvest and an additional 50 kg N/ha supplied after the first harvest, every year for 3 years. Overall, our results showed that applying both forms of digestate or undigested slurry gave grass yields that matched those obtained with one compound inorganic fertilizer, and better than those from a straight N inorganic fertilizer. No differences were found with regard to digestibility or sward N‐content (hence calculated protein) between any treatments. Although the trial was conducted at only one site, the results indicate that inorganic fertilizers can potentially be replaced by digestate without compromising grassland productivity.  相似文献

A 1-year grazing experiment with dairy cows is described in which the milk yield and herbage intake from a sward of S23 perennial ryegrass alone receiving fertilizer N at an annual rate of 360 kg ha−1 were compared with those from a ryegrass-white clover var. Blanca sward given a total N application of 180 kg ha−1. Both treatments gave virtually the same total milk yield of about 12500 kg ha−1 over a 20-week grazing season.  相似文献

An experiment was carried out to compare the effects of two compressed sward height treatments, each at two fertilizer nitrogen (N) treatments (0 and 50 kg ha−1 in spring), on the date of turnout and liveweight gain of steers grazing a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne/Trifolium repens ) sward sited on clay loam in south-west England. The sward height treatments were 6 cm all season, and 4 cm in the spring rising to 6 cm in June; these were maintained using continuously variable stocking with Hereford × Friesian steers. Cattle were turned out on average 11·5 days earlier on the 4-cm sward height compared with the 6-cm sward height treatment. Liveweight gain early in the season was lower on the 4-cm swards than on the 6-cm swards. Liveweight gain ha−1 over the whole season was similar for the two sward height treatments. Fertilizer N did not affect turnout date or liveweight gain.  相似文献

An established sward of red clover cv. Hungaropoly sown pure received approx. 30 kg P ha-1 and 200 kg K ha-1 each year for 3 successive years. The P and K were applied either as cattle slurry, inorganic fertilizer or combinations of these. Treatments were applied either in spring or after the first harvest. There were a total of six treatments and these were harvested three times each year. The average yields of total herbage DM over all the treatments in the first, second and third years were 15·2, 14·2 and 14·2 t ha-1 respectively and the various treatments had no significant effect on the overall yields.
Treatments had a significnt effect on red clover DM yields and percentage red clover in one harvest in each of the first 2 years and all three in the third year. Yields of red clover were lower and grass higher in treatments receiving cattle slurry only. On this treatment there was a total yield of 23·2 t ha-1 red clover DM in the 3 years compared with 30·2 t ha-1 on the inorganic fertilizer treatments. However, by applying P and K fertilizer in the spring, followed by cattle slurry after the first harvest, it was possible to maintain a high proportion of red clover in the sward and to produce yields of red clover DM similar to those on the inorganic fertilizer treatments.  相似文献

Dairy farming systems are important sources for the emission of a number of materials that include various forms of nitrogen (NO3, N2O and NH3) with potential environmental impact. The present paper is a systems synthesis study and assesses the likely impact of changes in management on N flows and losses. These include tactical fertilizer adjustment, slurry injection, maize silage production and the use of white clover as an alternative to fertilizer N. Implications for greenhouse gases (N2O and CH4) and support energy have also been considered. Substantial reductions in inputs and total and proportional losses by all die options considered were predicted by this study. Thus, using a tactical approach to fertilizer application and injecting slurry or using 50% maize silage reduced overall N losses from 160 (under conventional management) to 86 and 109kg Nha−1 respectively. Combining both possibilities reduced losses further to 69 kg ha−1. Although use of white clover, especially at low contents in the sward, was the most effective regime to reduce losses, this was at some cost to production so that losses per livestock unit (LU) did not always differ from those under other managements. Changing the N management had consequences for greenhouse gas emission with an estimated maximum 70% reduction in N2O release. The effects on CH4 emissions were relatively small. Substantial reductions in support energy costs were also obtained: these arose mainly from the reduction in fertilizer N use, which represented 66% of the total support energy in the original system.  相似文献

Two red clover ( Trifolium pratense ) cultivars, Red Head (tetraploid) and Kuhn (diploid), were sown at a seed rate of 13 kg ha−1 either alone or in mixture with Italian ryegrass ( Lolium multiflorum ) cv. RvP sown at seed rates of 10, 15, 20 or 30 kg ha−1. RvP was also sown alone at a seed rate of 30 kg ha−1 and received nil or 300 kg ha−1 fertilizer a−1 fertilizer N. All plots were established using the barley cultivar Midas sown at a seed rate of 100 kg ha−1 as a nurse crop.
Neither clover cultivar nor ryegrass seed rate significantly influenced either dry matter harvested or botanical composition over the 3 harvest years. On average over all years the grass-clover mixtures produced 75% of the yield of the N-fertilized RvP, 125% of the clover monocultures and 225% of the unfertilized RvP. The red clover contribution to the total dry matter harvested of the mixtures averaged 45–60%. The dry matter concentrations of the mixtures were considerably higher than those of the pure clover stands. In the third year yields were markedly reduced in comparison with those in the first and second years.
It was concluded that Italian ryegrass can be a suitable companion grass for red clover. Its superior yielding capacity over other grasses such as perennial ryegrass or timothy under a conservation management can be coupled to advantage with red clover to give a sward which Is essentially stable, at least over a 2- to 3-year cropping period, although giving slightly reduced yields in the third year. Italian ryegrass-red clover mixtures, without the use of fertilizer N, can produce high DM yields of good quality herbage.  相似文献

Applications of N fertilizer (0.40, 80, 120 and 240 kg N ha−1 year−1 in dressings of 40 or 80 kg N ha−1) were made to a perennial ryegrass/white clover ( Lolium perenne L. Trifolium repens L.) pasture growing on a humus iron podzol reclaimed from heather ( Calluna vulgaris L.) moor in 1982 and 1983. Where no N was applied, estimates of Ni fixation and mineralization were almost equal, being approximately 50 kg N ha−1 year−1 from each source. Apparent efficiencies of fertilizer use were generally low; for each dressing they ranged between –0·7 and 25·5 kg dry matter (DM)kgN−1. Also, responses to N fertilizer were affected by previous dressings. The net N recovery in harvested herbage from application of 120 kg N ha−1 year−1 was 30 kg N ha−1 year−1.  相似文献

Comparative herbage characteristics and sheep production (ewes and lambs until weaning and lambs thereafter) from swards of Aurora (very early flowering), Frances (early flowering), Talbot (intermediate flowering) and Melle (late flowering) varieties of perennial ryegrass ( Lolium perenne ) were studied under a continuous variable stocking management based on sward surface height guidelines. The varieties were assessed as grass-only (215 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) and grass/clover (83 kg N ha−1 fertilizer) pastures.
Over 2 years (1985-86) total annual lamb production per hectare from grass-only swards of Aurora was 19% more than that from Frances despite similar herbage productivity. Differences between the varieties in lamb output were more pronounced as grass/clover swards, with Aurora producing 29 and 18% more lamb than Melle and Talbot respectively and with Frances also giving 16% more than Melle. Overall lamb production from grass/clover swards was 10% more than that from the grass-only pastures, mainly due to 69% advantage in individual lamb growth rates after weaning. Herbage organic matter digestibility, during the post-weaning period, was higher on grass/clover than on grass-only swards, and similarly with Aurora versus the other varieties. Under a frequent cut simulated grazing regime the relative herbage productivity of the four varieties differed, with Aurora 13% less productive than Frances.
The results are discussed in relation to the limitations of assessing performance under cutting, and the significance of the interaction in animal productivity between the two sward types.  相似文献

The effects of N applied in spring on the growth and development of white clover ( Trifolium repens L.) in a mixed sward were investigated at Uppsala, Sweden. In early spring, the plots received 0 or 90 kg N ha−1 in the form of nitrochalk. The formation and loss of stolon branches were followed on marked stolons. The proportion of white clover in the total above-ground dry matter (DM) of the sward fell substantially in both treatments during the 8-week growth period, but more so in N fertilized than in unfertilized plots; fertilizer N increased the accumulation of grass DM, whereas it reduced the accumulation of white clover DM. Over time, there was a loss of white clover growing points and this loss was greatest in plots where N was applied. Branching occurred predominantly during the first half of the growth period and was unaffected by N application, whereas the loss of branches was more confined to the latter period and was increased in plots receiving N. Irrespective of node position, the size of the branches that died was comparatively small, and more branches were lost from young than from old node positions. It is concluded that the decline in the number of growing points in the N fertilized sward was mainly due to an increased loss of recently formed branches. As a consequence of its stimulating effect on grass growth, the N fertilized treatment initially led to a reduction in the R:FR ratio of light and subsequently also in the availability of photosynthetically active radiation within the canopy. These changes in the light environment of the sward caused morphological adjustments to be made by the white clover and may have contributed to the observed loss of branches.  相似文献

A perennial ryegrass/white clover sward, which had been grazed for over 2 years, was cut at 1-, 2-, 3- or 6-week intervals from 18 April to 28 November 1986. Two rates of fertilizer N application in spring, 0 and 66 kg N ha−1, were compared. Perennial ryegrass growth was studied in three 6-week periods, beginning on 18 April, 18 July and 17 October. Clover growth was studied in the same three periods and described by Fisher and Wilman (1995) Grass and Forage Science , 50 , 162–171.
Applied N increased the number of ryegrass tillers m−2, the rate of leaf extension and the weight of new leaf produced tiller−1 and m−2per week. Increasing the interval between cuts reduced the number of ryegrass tillers m−2 and increased the rate of leaf extension, weight tiller−1and the weight of new leaf produced tiller−1week−1. Increasing the interval between cuts increased the weight of new ryegrass leaf produced m−2 where N had recently been applied, but otherwise had little effect on the weight of new leaf produced m−2. Applying N favoured the grass in competition with the clover in every respect, whereas increasing the interval between cuts only favoured the grass, compared with clover, where N had recently been applied; where N had not been applied, the ratio of ryegrass tillers to clover growing points in the sward was very little affected by the interval between cuts.  相似文献

Two experiments were established in 1989 and 1990 to evaluate the performance of white clover ( Trifolium repens ) varieties under grazing, using sheep and cattle, and also under a 'cutting-only' regime. The three potential medium/large-leaved varieties (AberVantage, AberCrown and AberDai) were selected and evaluated in a breeding programme that emphasized improving yield and persistency under grazing.
In Experiment 1, the potential varieties were sown with two different grass companions, and evaluated under a continuous cattle-grazing system, representative of their future role in actual farm practice, i.e. a set stocking system. Clover yield of the potential varieties in the second harvest year averaged 1–5 t ha−1 more than the control variety Olwen. Total sward production of AberVantage, AberCrown and AberDai was 2.0–1.4 t ha−1 higher than that of Olwen.
In Experiment 2, clover yields of the three potential varieties averaged 2.1 t more than Olwen in the second harvest year under continuous sheep grazing, but all three were lower yielding than Olwen in the cutting regime.
Both experiments illustrate how the use of grazing treatments during breeding and evaluation can improve the role of white clover varieties.  相似文献
