Feline Rhodococcus equi infection is rare, despite the bacteria is widespread in the environment. R equi infection is typically observed in equine species but the infection has also been reported in dogs, cats and other domestic animals. There are a few reports regarding pulmonary R equi infection in cats and the disease appears to be limited to the skin and the subcutaneous tissue. This report describes the pathological, microbiological and the virulence features associated with an acute necrosuppurative pneumonia in a cat. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of feline pulmonary R equi infection in Italy.  相似文献

This report describes a case of Rhodococcus equi infection causing pyogranulomatous skin disease and cellulitis in a two-year-old female domestic shorthaired cat. The case differed from previously reported cases in cats in its clinical presentation and in the locations of the lesions, which were similar to those seen in horses. The presence of an intracellular organism was confirmed by cytology and on histopathology. The aetiological diagnosis was confirmed by routine biochemical tests specific for R. equi on a pure isolate obtained from a biopsy specimen. The report also reviews the literature of the documented feline cases and discusses the common pitfalls in the diagnosis of such infections.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate experimental infection of the piglet as a model of Rhodococcus equi pneumonia in the foal. Three litters of eight piglets each were exposed to an aerosol of 3.4 X 10(7) R. equi per piglet per day for seven consecutive days. Over the next 23 days the piglets were observed for clinical signs of disease. Periodically after infection one piglet from each litter was killed, the lungs were cultured quantitatively for R. equi and the gross and microscopic pulmonary lesions were assessed. The only clinical evidence of disease was the occurrence of elevated temperatures in the infected piglets. Rhodococcus equi was slowly cleared from the piglets' lungs during the 23 days following aerosolization. Piglets sacrificed seven to ten days after aerosolization had the most extensive pulmonary lesions, consisting of severe consolidation of the cranioventral lobes. Microscopic examination revealed thickened interalveolar septa and alveoli containing many neutrophils and macrophages with intracytoplasmic Gram-positive coccobacilli. The pulmonary lesions in these piglets differed from those of naturally infected foals in that they were not characterized by macrophage-rich abscesses and the infection gradually resolved.  相似文献

A 1-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat had an ulcerated, proliferative lesion in the submandibular area that did not respond to antibiotic therapy. Impression smears from the mass revealed septic pyogranulomatous inflammation, with large numbers of pleomorphic bacteria observed intracellularly within macrophages as well as neutrophils. Bacterial culture was consistent with a diagnosis of Rhodococcus equi, a facultative intracellular coccobacillus capable of replicating within macrophages. The cat's lesion resolved after treatment with rifampin and clarithromycin. R equi should be considered as a differential diagnosis when coccobacilli are recognized within macrophages in cytologic samples.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi was isolated from lung, liver, spleen, and stomach content of two aborted equine fetuses of 7 and 8 months gestation from two different farms. Lesions included diffuse pyogranulomatous pneumonia with numerous Gram-positive coccobacilli within the cytoplasm of macrophages, multinucleated Langhans giant cells and neutrophils, and enhanced extramedullary hematopoiesis with megakaryocytosis within the liver and spleen. Detection of R. equi was made by bacteriology and immunohistochemistry for R. equi and VapA, the virulence factor of R. equi. R. equi and VapA were identified within the lungs of both fetuses, and its distribution correlated with lesions. Fetal lesions were similar to those observed in foals. We speculate that the fetuses contracted infection from the placenta by normal breathing movements or by swallowing of the amniotic fluid contaminated with R. equi.  相似文献

The species Corynebacterium equi was proposed for strains isolated from foals suffering from purulent pneumonia. The taxon has had a confused history and is currently listed under both Corynebacterium and Rhodococcus in the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names. Data from modern taxonomic studies indicate that Corynebacterium equi Magnusson 1923 should be reduced to a synonym of Rhodococcus equi (Magnusson) Goodfellow and Alderson 1980. Rhodococcus equi has repeatedly been shown to be a good species on the basis of chemical, molecular biological, numerical phenetic and serological data. Improved methods are needed to differentiate Rhodococcus equi from closely related species of Rhodococcus.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi, a natural pathogen of horses, produces lesions in mice following experimental infection. The effect of various immunosuppressing agents on the sequential development of these lesions has been assessed by measuring the growth of R. equi following intravenous or intranasal challenge and by histological examination. Cyclophosphamide treatment of mice, challenged intranasally, resulted in the development of lesions not unlike that seen in experimental and natural infection in foals. Cortisone acetate also impaired bacterial clearance from the lungs and affected the accumulation of mononuclear cells at infective foci. Most of the agents chosen to impair macrophage function failed to affect the resistance of mice to R. equi. Carbon, carrageenan and silica failed to alter significantly the growth kinetics of R. equi. Dextran sulphate depressed the rate of pulmonary clearance of organisms and affected the ability of animals to eliminate R. equi following rechallenge. Overall, these results support other evidence that cell mediated immunity is involved in host resistance to R. equi and that activated macrophages play a role in acquired immunity to this organism.  相似文献

This study sought to determine whether an increase in resistance of Rhodococcus equi to the antibiotics rifampin and erythromycin occurred over a 10-year period. This was carried out by the use of E test strips for rifampin and erythromycin to determine the MIC (minimum inhibitory concentration) values of Rhodococcus equi to this combination of antibiotics.The findings of this study indicated that there was an increase in resistance of Rhodococcus equi to rifampin and erythromycin over the 10-year period. The MIC for rifampin increased from 0.081 μg/ml in 1996 to 0.187 μg/ml in 2006 and from 0.258 μg/ml for erythromycin during the years prior to 2000 to 0.583 μg/ml in 2006.This finding suggests that there may be a problem in the treatment of Rhodococcus equi infections in foals in the future, particularly as the number of drugs available for treatment of Rhodococcus equi infection is limited because of the intracellular capabilities of this bacterium. Antibiotics used in its treatment have to be able to penetrate the polysaccharide cell wall of Rhodococcus equi as well as the alveolar macrophages in which the bacterium is capable of surviving.  相似文献

A 2-year-old intact male domestic shorthaired cat presented with a chronic, nodular, ulcerated, cutaneous lesion on the right thoracic limb. Histological and cytological examination revealed a pyogranulomatous inflammation with basophilic organisms in the macrophages. A virulent form of Rhodococcus equi containing an 87 kb type I (VapA) virulence plasmid was identified from cultures of biopsy samples. This report describes the clinicopathological features, plasmid profile and virulence of this case of R equi infection.  相似文献

CASE HISTORY: Three cats were presented with single proliferative lesions affecting one foot, which failed to heal after medical treatment, and recurred despite surgical resection. PATHOLOGICAL FINDINGS: Histologically, the lesions were proliferative and papillary. There was marked acanthosis, rete peg formation, and compact orthokeratosis, with large numbers of bacteria in the orthokeratotic scale. Some biopsies had multifocal keratinocyte swelling of the stratum granulosum, and amphophilic intracytoplasmic inclusions were present in some of the swollen cells. The dermis consisted of a light fibrous stroma with marked capillary proliferation. Parapoxviruses were detected in the lesions of all cats by electron microscopic examination. PCR analysis detected orf virus (contagious ecthyma virus) in two cats, and orf virus was cultured from one cat. DIAGNOSIS: Parapoxvirus infection in cats. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Parapoxvirus infection should be considered as a differential diagnosis when dealing with proliferative, non-healing lesions on the feet of cats, especially cats in rural areas. The recovery of orf virus from a cat with typical poxvirus lesions extends the range of species affected by this virus.  相似文献

The growth kinetics in outbred mice of clinical and environmental isolates of Rhodococcus equi were followed by serial bacterial enumeration of organ homogenates. Clinical isolates multiplied until Day 4 before being progressively cleared, but could still be recovered from the liver at 3-4 weeks post-infection. Intravenous inoculation of clinical strains was associated with histopathological responses very similar to those elicited by intravenous infection with various facultative intracellular parasites. Whereas lesions in mice and foals at 7-9 days following respiratory infection are those of severe bronchopneumonia with massive consolidation, a week later the patterns of host response have diverged as the murine lesions resolve. The type strain, NCTC 1621 and 4-6 environmental isolates were eliminated without prior multiplication and these strains caused negligible lesions. The two environmental strains which behaved as the clinical strains were recovered from a stud with an R. equi problem. No association of colonial morphology of R. equi with virulence was apparent.  相似文献

Praziquantel was used successfully for treatment of a small number of dogs and 1 cat infected with Paragonimus kellicotti. To further evaluate the usefulness of this drug in treating such infections, 7 cats and 7 dogs were inoculated orally with metacercariae (12 and 20 to 22, respectively) obtained from crayfish, then were treated after the infections became patent; 2 cats and 2 dogs served as noninfected controls. Beginning 1 week before infection, and continuing weekly thereafter, physical, hematologic, and fecal examinations were performed on each animal; thoracic radiography was performed every other week. By postinoculation week 6, all dogs given metacercariae had patent infection diagnosed on the basis of positive results of fecal examination. By postinoculation week 7, 5 cats had confirmed patent infection, but 2 cats given metacercariae never had patent infection or had signs of infection. Clinical signs of infection were minor and included increased respiratory tract noise, slight inducible cough, or mild dyspnea. Transient eosinophilia was detected in dogs around postinoculation week 3. Pretreatment radiography revealed cavitated lesions in cats only; pleural lines and patchy infiltrates in cats and dogs; or pneumothorax in dogs only. The treatment regimen consisted of 23 mg of praziquantel/kg of body weight given every 8 hours for 3 days; 1 infected cat and dog were not treated. By 11 days after treatment, eggs had disappeared from the feces of infected animals, and marked resolution of lung lesions was evident radiographically.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to test equine serum for the presence of antibodies to Rhodococcus (Corynebacterium) equi. Experimental ponies had no detectable antibody to R equi before exposure to the bacterium. After experimental inoculation, animals in groups that received live R equi subcutaneously or intranasally/intratracheally developed high titers to R equi. Noninoculated controls remained seronegative. Serum was also collected from horses of various ages that were naturally exposed to R equi. There was a wide range of anti-R equi titers in these horses. Because experimentally infected horses seroconverted when some naturally infected foals did not seroconvert, the function of antibody in resistance to R equi infection remains unknown.  相似文献

Two hundred and twenty-six cats from the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), a cat shelter, and a purebred cattery were tested for chronic feline calicivirus (FCV), feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) infections. Chronic oral carriage of FCV was present in about one-fifth of the cats in each of the groups. FIV infection was not present in the purebred cattery, was moderately prevalent (8%) in the pet population of cats examined at the VMTH for various complaints and was rampant in the cat shelter (21%). Unexpectedly high FeLV infection rates were found in the hospital cat population (28%) and in the purebred cattery (36%), but not in the cat shelter (1.4%). FCV and FeLV infections tended to occur early in life, whereas FIV infections tended to occur in older animals. From 43 to 100% of the cats in these environments had oral cavity disease ranging from mild gingivitis (23-46%), proliferative gingivitis (18-20%), periodontitis (3-32%) and periodontitis with involvement of extra-gingival tissues (7-27%). Cats infected solely with FCV did not have a greater likelihood of oral lesions, or more severe oral disease, than cats that were totally virus free. This was also true for cats infected solely with FeLV, or for cats dually infected with FeLV and FCV. Cats infected solely with FIV appeared to have a greater prevalence of oral cavity infections and their oral cavity disease tended to be more severe than cats without FIV infection. FIV-infected cats that were coinfected with either FCV, or with FCV and FeLV, had the highest prevalence of oral cavity infections and the most severe oral lesions.  相似文献

A 7-year-old horse with no previous history of illness was determined to have a systemic infection of Rhodococcus equi. Rhodococcus equi was isolated from blood, tracheal fluid, and feces. Lymphopenia, failure to respond to concanavalin A and phytohemagglutinin lymphocyte stimulation testing, decreased concentrations of immunoglobulin (Ig)M, IgA, and IgG, low R equi antibody titer, histologic depletion of lymphoid tissue, and a failure to respond to antigenic stimulation led to the conclusion that both humoral and cell-mediated immunity were compromised. No cause for the acquired immunodeficiency could be determined.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether purified equine immunoglobulin specific for Rhodococcus equi virulence-associated proteins A and C (VapA and VapC) can confer passive protection against R. equi-induced pneumonia in foals. ANIMALS: Twenty-eight 3-week-old mixed-breed pony foals. PROCEDURE: 7 foals received IV injections of equine hyperimmune plasma (HIP) against whole-cell R. equi, and 7 received purified equine immunoglobulin specific for VapA and VapC 1 day prior to intrabronchial infection with R. equi strain 103+. Eleven foals were not treated prior to infection, and 3 control foals were neither treated nor infected. Heart rate, respiratory rate, and rectal temperature were recorded twice daily, and serum fibrinogen concentration and WBC count were determined every other day following infection. Foals were euthanatized 14 days following infection, and lung lesions and concentration of R. equi in lungs were assessed. RESULTS: The onset of clinical signs of pneumonia was significantly delayed in the HIP- and immunoglobulin-treated groups, compared with the untreated infected group. Moreover, pulmonary lesions were less severe in the treated groups, and significantly fewer R. equi organisms were cultured from the lungs of treated foals. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Degree of protection against R. equi-induced pneumonia provided by purified immunoglobulin specific for VapA and VapC was similar to that provided by commercially available HIP. Results not only suggest that immunoglobulin is the primary component of HIP that confers protection against R. equi-induced pneumonia in foals but also indicate that antibodies against R. equi VapA and VapC are protective.  相似文献

Rhodococcus equi infection occurs worldwide and is especially a problem in foals, where it often causes colitis or pneumonia. Other organs are seldom affected, and their involvement is regarded as a complication of pneumonia and/or colitis. Vertebral osteomyelitis is one such rare complication and is probably caused by haematogenous spread from inflammatory lesions in the lungs and/or intestine. In rare cases, osteomyelitis can be caused by contamination of a wound. This case study describes a foal with vertebral osteomyelitis due to R. equi in which there were only minor inflammatory changes in a mesenteric lymph node.  相似文献

Hematologic and radiographic findings in 15 domestic cats inoculated with 25, 100, or 200 to 400 infective larvae of Dirofilaria immitis and in 5 uninoculated cats were compared. Eosinophilia and leukocytosis developed 3 to 5 months after inoculation; packed cell volume and hemoglobin values were similar for inoculated cats and controls. Changes detected in radiographs of inoculated cats were: (1) increased visualization of the pulmonary arteries; (2) right-side cardiac enlargement; and (3) diffuse to focal areas of density in the pulmonary parenchyma. At least one of these lesions was visible radiographically by 3 to 7 months after inoculation in all 15 cats. The severity of changes was not directly proportional to the number of infective larvae inoculated, adult worm burden, or age of cat. However, male cats had more severe cardiopulmonary lesions than did females, and cats that had microfilaremia during the course of infection had more severe pulmonary lesions, as determined radiographically. Parenchymal densities decreased in 8 of the 15 inoculated cats 6 to 14 months after inoculation. Cardiac enlargement was detected radiographically in 10 of the inoculated cats. Enlargement of the pulmonary arteries was the most consistent sign of D immitis infection; it developed and persisted in 12 cats found to be infected at necropsy.  相似文献
