1. Raw and cooked meat yields and the dry matter and fat contents of meat samples were determined on 144 carcases of Small White turkeys fed on diets that varied in nutrient density (ND) and energy to protein ratio (E:P). 2. High ND diets increased body weights, eviscerated carcase weights, relative carcase yields and carcase skin yield, but not breast or total meat yields. 3. Feeding a low ND diet to 6 weeks followed by diets with progressively increasing ND yielded performance and carcases with qualities comparable to feeding diets of constant medium or high ND; consequently cost savings could be made. 4. Increasing E:Ps reduced body weights, eviscerated carcase weights and carcase yields. Breast and total meat yields from male but not female carcases, and skin yield of female but not male carcases decreased with higher E:Ps. 5. The fat contents of breast and thigh meat samples increased with ND. The fat content of breast but not thigh meat decreased with higher E:P. Dry matter contents of meat samples did not vary consistently with changes in fat content. 相似文献

A total of 3,240 female Taisheng pigeons at 40 wk age were fed 9 diets containing 3 ME levels (2,630, 2,770, and 2,940 kcal/kg) and 3 CP levels (14.0, 15.0, and 16.0%) in a factorial arrangement. These diets were fed to investigate the effects of ME and CP on performance, egg quality, and nutrient digestibility. Female pigeons were housed under the same managerial conditions and randomly assigned into 9 treatments (6 replicates of 60 birds each). Two female–female paired pigeons housed in one cage were under a 16L:8D lighting cycle. Feed in pellet form and water were provided for ad libitum consumption. The study lasted 12 wk. As dietary ME level increased from 2,630 to 2,940 kcal/kg, BW, egg production, and apparent DM, crude fat (CF), and phosphorus (i.e., P) digestibilities increased ( P < 0.05), feed intake decreased ( P < 0.05), and feed conversion efficiency increased ( P < 0.05). Increasing the level of dietary protein from 14 to 16% resulted in an increased ( P < 0.05) BW, shell percentage, length of the major axis, and DM digestibility. Therefore, dietary ME had a greater influence on the performance of Taisheng laying pigeons than did dietary protein. 相似文献

1. The present study aimed to evaluate breast muscle quality and muscle myofibre density in two broiler genotypes given three dietary protein feeding regimes. 2. A total of 1440 Ross 308 and 708 broilers (720/genotype) were given one of three dietary protein regimes (Low: 192, 166 and 155 g/kg, Control: 229, 199 and 182 g/kg and High: 266, 235 and 207 g/kg for starter, grower and finisher diets respectively). On d 21 and 42, initial protein solubility, DNA and myofibre density were determined. On d 42, breast meat samples were collected for meat quality analyses. 3. There were no genotype effects on pH(24), L*, a* or b* values. Thawing loss was higher in meat from the 708 than the 308 genotype. 4. Broilers given the low protein feeding regime had highest carcase fat, lowest pH(24) and palest meat. The low regression coefficients between dietary protein content and changes in pH(24) and lightness, however, demonstrated that dietary protein was not the principal factor influencing these traits. 5. Although sarcoplasmic protein solubility was similar among protein feeding regimes on d 21, the highest sarcoplasmic protein solubility on d 42 was in broilers on the high protein regime. 6. Myofibre density was highest in meat from broilers given the low protein regime. 7. It was concluded that dietary-protein content contributes significantly to both protein solubility and myofibre density. 相似文献

1. A total of 2560 male and female Ross broilers were raised to 42 days of age in a 2 × 2 treatment factorial arrangement experiment to investigate the influence of different degrees of physical activity and dietary energy on broiler performance, abdominal fat content, carcase yield and sensory quality. 2. Vertical fans were used to force the treatment birds to walk 3 to 4 times as far as the normal activity birds; birds were fed a normal and a high energy diet (12.55 compared with 13.81 MJ ME/kg) with the same energy/protein, energy/lysine and energy/methionine + cystine ratios. 3. High activity birds had greater body weight ( + 4.1%), food intake ( + 5.1%) and ME intake ( + 5.1%) than normal activity birds. Birds receiving high energy diet had a lower food conversion and food intake than birds receiving normal energy diet. There were no significant differences in body weight or ME intake between birds with different diets. 4. Slaughter yields, both absolute and relative to live body weight, were affected by activity or dietary energy to varying degrees. Breast meat was increased with more activity. The absolute weight of abdominal fat was independent of activity and in males the relative weight of abdominal fat was decreased in high activity birds. 5. Different degrees of activity and dietary energy had only minor influences on broilers' sensory quality. 相似文献

1. The objective of this trial was to study the effects of chromium nicotinate (Cr) supplementation on the performance, carcase characteristics and blood constituents of 9 to 22 week-old male turkeys. 2. Fifty-four 8-week-old male turkeys weighing 2.9 +/- 0.28 kg were allocated at random into 9 groups with 3 dietary treatments and 3 replicates. The dietary treatment was different dietary concentrations of chromium in the basal diet, to provide 0 (control), 1 or 3 mg/kg. The feeding trial lasted for 14 weeks. 3. Results showed that 1 mg/kg chromium supplementation significantly improved weight gain and food intake at 9 to 18 weeks of age but did not significantly influence performance at 19 to 22 week of age. The breast and thigh muscle were significantly increased in birds receiving 1 mg/kg chromium supplementation but were decreased by 3 mg/kg of supplementation. 4. Dietary chromium supplementation did not significantly influence other serum constituents, including insulin, HDL, VLDL+LDL, HDL-C, VLDL-C+LDL-C, total protein, albumin, and gamma-globulin at 18 and 22 weeks of age. 5. The serum triacylglycerol (TG) and uric acid contents were significantly increased, while glycerol and alpha-globulin were significantly reduced by 3 mg/kg chromium supplementation. However, 1 mg/kg chromium supplementation significantly reduced serum cholesterol and glycerol at 18-weeks old. At 22 weeks of age, 1 mg/kg chromium supplementation significantly increased serum glucose and decreased the uric acid concentration whereas 3 mg/kg chromium supplementation significantly increased the creatinine concentration and decreased beta-globulin concentration. 相似文献

The effects of up to 12.9% added dietary fat (ADF) and a 10% variation in the relative energy to protein ratio (E : P) on performance to 24 weeks and the carcass composition of male turkeys at 4‐weekly intervals were determined. Poults given a low level of ADF required a narrower E : P to 4 weeks and were more sensitive to E : P imbalance than those given higher levels of ADF. The E : P requirement was less critical after 4 weeks. Energy conversion was more efficient with lower ADF to 4 weeks but became more efficient with higher ADF as the birds approached maturity. Energy utilisation was more, and protein utilisation less, efficient with narrower than with wider E : P's. Increased deposition of tissue fat at high ADF levels may explain the increased energy tolerance of poults fed on fat‐rich diets. Carcass finish and tissue fat deposition were influenced more strongly by the level of ADF than by varying the E : P. The pronounced influence of ADF on the skin and tissue fat of immature turkeys indicates the potential value of increased ADF in diets for early marketed small turkeys. The yield of carcass components other than skin was not strongly influenced by either ADF or E : P. The percentage eviscerated carcass and edible meat yield increased with age. The percentage yield of wing segments and drumstick decreased with age. Skin yield and tissue fat content first decreased, then increased with age. Equations were derived to express the relationship of fat content with protein, moisture and age in thigh and breast meat. 相似文献

This study examined the effectiveness of electrical stunning of turkeys applied at 150 mA per bird utilising a range of waveform-frequency combinations. In addition, the effect of stunning treatment on subsequent carcase quality was examined. The effectiveness of stunning, as judged by time to recovery, was similar regardless of bird weight or applied stunning treatment. Increasing waveform frequency was associated with a decrease in the prevalence of ventricular fibrillation, although turkeys appeared more susceptible than broilers. Use of the higher frequency waveforms (500 and 1500 Hz) was associated with a marked improvement in carcase quality, particularly with regard to breast muscle haemorrhaging and their use may result in considerable commercial advantage. 相似文献

1. A study was conducted with 120 female early maturing turkeys to test the effect of dietary dried oregano leaves (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) on body weight (BW), feed intake (FI), feed conversion efficiency (FCE), carcase characteristics and serum cholesterol concentration. Dried oregano leaves had a content of 3.6 ml essential oils/100 g, while the carvacrol content was 855 g/kg of the total essential oils. 2. From 1 to 84 d of age, the turkeys were fed on 4 diets varying in oregano content (OR0, no oregano--control; OR45, 1.25 g oregano/kg; OR90, 2.5 g oregano/kg; OR135, 3.75 g oregano/kg). Birds were given feed and water ad libitum. 3. BW was unaffected by oregano throughout the experiment. FI and FCE were similar among all treatments until 42 d of age. From 43 to 84 d of age and for the overall experimental period, FI decreased linearly in treatment OR135 and FCE increased linearly with dietary oregano content. Body and carcase weights, carcase yield, and the relative weights of the heart and liver were not significantly affected by oregano content. The relative weights of the gizzard and small intestine decreased linearly with oregano content. Serum cholesterol content was similar among all treatments. 4. In the present study, dietary oregano (1.25, 2.5 and 3.75 g/kg) improved FCE in female early maturing turkeys between 43 and 84 d, with the lowest oregano inclusion (1.25 g/kg) giving the most cost effective diet. Thus, dried oregano leaves may be used as a natural herbal growth promoter for early maturing turkeys. 相似文献

Introduction The aim in the feeding of piglets is to realize the maximum growth rates, according to the high growth capacity of these animals. In this respect, the supply of energy and essential amino acids is of particular significance. Among the essential amino acids, lysine, as the first growth-limiting amino acid, plays a predominate role. In the practical feeding of piglets, the recommendation is to start feeding, after weaning at 4 weeks of age, with a diet containing 13.4–13.8 MJ metabolizable energy (ME) per kg and a lysine concentration of 12.1–12.4 g/kg, which represents a ratio between lysine and energy of 0.9 g/MJ ME. After the initial phase, when the live weight is in the range 20–30 kg, it is recommended that the dietary energy is reduced to 13.0–13.4 MJ ME/kg and the lysine concentration to a range of 10.7–11.0 g/kg (representing a lysine : energy ratio of 0.82 g/MJ ME) (DLG 1996). The present study was carried out to investigate whether this recommended phase-feeding system allows maximum growth performance in piglets, or whether a constant high energy and lysine concentration during the whole rearing period is superior with regard to growth performance of piglets. Therefore, two experiments were carried out with early-weaned piglets. The first experiment, using a bifactorial design, investigated the effects of the dietary energy density and the ratio between lysine and energy on the growth performance of piglets at constant levels during the whole phase of 8–30 kg live weight. The second experiment, using a similar experimental design, was conducted to investigate the combined effect between those factors in the second phase, at live weights between 20 and 30 kg. 相似文献

1. The effects of increasing concentrations (0, 40, 80 or 120 g/kg) of bacterial protein meal (BPM) and bacterial protein autolysate (BPA) grown on natural gas on growth performance and carcase quality in broiler chickens were examined. 2. Adding BPM to diets reduced feed intake and improved gain: feed from 0 to 21 d and overall to 35 d, but did not significantly affect weight gain compared to the soybean meal based control diet. 3. Increasing concentrations of BPA significantly reduced growth rate, feed intake, gain: feed, carcase weight and dressing percentage, but significantly increased carcase dry matter, fat and energy content. 4. Adding BPM to diets had no effect on viscosity of diets and jejunal digesta, and minor effects on litter quality, whereas BPA increased the viscosity of diets and jejunal digesta, improved litter quality at 21 d, but decreased litter quality at 32 d. 5. To conclude, broiler chickens performed better on a BPM product with intact proteins than on an autolysate with ruptured cell walls and a high content of free amino acids and low molecular-weight peptides. 相似文献

Two field occurrences of protein-deficiency disease were reported in turkeys and chickens. The disease caused unthriftiness, poor growth, and the exhibition of pica in flocks of 15-week-old pedigree large white turkeys, and it resulted in a sharp drop (18%) in egg production in a flock of 60-week-old white leghorn layers. In each case, the disease was cured by replacing the protein-deficient diet with a protein-sufficient one. 相似文献

1. Each week, from 12 to 20 weeks of age, male turkeys of a heavy strain were subjected to cool (C; 16°C), hot (H; 29°C), and cycling temperatures, and fed on a standard diet ad libitum for 4 d. Lighting was intermittent, 3 h on, 3 h off. Food was given when lights were on. Those given cycling temperatures (3 h C; 3 h H) were given food and light during the cool (eat‐when‐cool, EC) or hot (EH) periods. 2. Birds in all treatments gained similar amounts of weight from 12–14 weeks of age. Thereafter, birds in C maintained gains, the body weight gains of birds in EC and EH declined moderately and birds in H lost weight. 3. Birds in C produced more metabolic heat. Those in H showed increased heat production as they became older. 4. Protein retention was greater in turkeys in C, EC and EH. It was lower in H, becoming negative between 18–20 weeks of age. Birds in H suffered body fat losses which increased with age. 5. Birds in EH and EC gained similar amounts of body weight. Birds in EH exhibited lower heat production and greater energy retention than those in EC. 6. Body temperatures were higher in H than in the other environments. 相似文献

Currently, specific nutrient concentration, metabolizable energy (ME) and digestible amino acids are used as feed formulation criteria. A balanced nutrient density (BND) concept based on 2 criteria of nutrient density and balanced amino acids-to-ME ratio may offer more flexibility in optimisation of profit in formulation of diets compared with current formulation based on set values per unit of feed mass. A total of 672 one-d-old off-sex male Ross 308 broiler chickens were used across two 42-d performance trials in a 3 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments with each diet replicated 8 times (14 birds per replicate). The experimental factors were 2 nutrient density levels (low [LD] and high [HD]) and 3 digestible lysine-to-ME ratios (DLYS:ME; low, medium, and high). Low density diets had ME of 2,876 and 3,023 kcal/kg for starter and finisher, respectively, while values for HD diets were 3,169 and 3,315 kcal/kg with proportionally higher non-nitrogenated nutrients. Separate digestibility and apparent metabolizable energy (AME) assays were conducted at d 21 and 42. Digestibility assays at d 7 were conducted on birds used for performance trials. Regardless of the diet density, birds fed low DLYS:ME had a lower ( P < 0.01) feed intake (d 0 to 42) than medium and high DLYS:ME. Without interaction, birds fed low and medium DLYS:ME had a similar body weight gain being the heaviest while birds low DLYS:ME were the lightest. By an interaction ( P < 0.05), the highest overall FCR value was observed for birds fed LD × low DLYS:ME and improved linearly when DLYS:ME increased to the highest level reaching a limit for birds fed HD × medium DLYS:ME. Calorie conversion linearly decreased ( P < 0.001) with increments in DLYS:ME. Jejunal and ileal starch and protein digestibility were affected on d 21 and 42 but not on d 7 of age. Given the independence of response on BW and feed consumption, the use of BND as a flexible system in diet formulations has the potential to enable more accurate formulation for optimisation of growth performance of broiler chickens. 相似文献

The effect of the stunning current at slaughter on carcase quality was examined in 1845 broiler chickens. As the current was increased there was an increase and then a decrease in the incidence of red wingtips and in haemorrhages of the wing veins and the shoulder joint. The incidence of deep breast muscle haemorrhages increased above about 130 mA, and the incidence of broken bones increased between 75 and 170 mA. The incidence of carcase defects was lowest when either less than 130 or greater than 190 mA was used to stun the birds. 相似文献

Two hundred ninety-eight Rambouillet ewe and wether lambs approximately 9 mo old from Texas were allotted to pens (29 to 30 lambs/pen). Two replicate pens were fed each of five diets. Two methods of restricting energy intake were evaluated: altering nutrient density (55% vs 72.5% vs 90% concentrate levels) and restricting intake of the 90% concentrate pelleted diet (92.5% or 85% ad libitum intake). Daily gains were highest with the 72.5% concentrate level and feed efficiency was poorest with the 55% concentrate diet fed ad libitum. Altering nutrient density did not reduce energy intake because lambs compensated by increasing feed intake at the lower nutrient densities. Actual feed intake was 89.5% of ad libitum for the 92.5% of ad libitum intake level and 84% of ad libitum at the 85% of ad libitum intake level due to refusal to consume some fines from the 90% concentrate diet. Feed refusal was greatest for lambs with ad libitum access to feed. Average daily gain was depressed by 8% at the 85% intake level. However, feed efficiency was improved (P less than .01) by 20% when intake was restricted to 92.5% of the ad libitum intake level. Differences in carcass traits were small, but consistent; carcass fat content was reduced slightly by restricting feed intake at constant slaughter weight. 相似文献

Two separate experiments were carried out to establish the effects of the protein:energy ratio in milk replacers on growth performance, plasma lipid concentrations and fatty acid composition in adipose tissue of male goat kids. In the first experiment there were 211 3-day- old goat kids and in the second experiment there were 121 kids aged 3-7 days. The animals were fed ad libitum for a period of 4 weeks on milk replacers containing either 11.5 or 9.5 g crude protein/MJ metabolizable energy. In essence, protein was exchanged with fat on a weight basis. Milk concentrations were increased from 160 to 190 g/l in experiment 1, from 150 to 180 g/l in experiment 2. There were significant increases in body weight and feed intake when the milk replacer with high protein : energy ratio was fed. Group mean average daily weight gain was 168 and 203 g for the groups with low and high dietary protein:energy ratio in experiment 1; for experiment 2 the values were 139 and 160 g. Average dry matter intake was 18 and 14% higher for the diet with high protein:energy ratio in experiments 1 and 2, respectively. There was no change in either feed conversion (feed:gain ratio) or energy conversion (weight gain:energy intake ratio). There were no consistent diet effects on plasma lipid concentrations. Dietary fatty acid composition was reflected by that of adipose tissue. The milk replacer with high protein:energy ratio produced a small increase in the contents of myristic and palmitic acid in adipose tissue. 相似文献

1. This study compared the effects of electrical stunning delivered using high and low frequency waveforms on carcase and meat quality of turkeys processed under commercial conditions. 2. The use of a high frequency waveform (1400 Hz) resulted in a faster bleedout and an improvement in carcase quality associated with a substantial reduction in haemorrhagic downgrading conditions. 3. Frequency of the applied waveform influenced breast muscle pH and colour although the magnitude of the differences was considered to be of minimal significance in influencing consumer perception. 相似文献
