Androgen-concentrating cells in the midbrain of a songbird

Androgen-concentrating cells were found in the midbrain of the chaffinch Fringilla coelebs by autoradiography using tritiated testosterone. Labeled cells were localized primarily in the nucleus intercollicularis, an area from which vocalizations can be electrically stimulated in birds. These autoradiographic results suggest that the nucleus intercollicularis is a site in the action of androgens on avian vocal behavior.

A two-dimensional analog VLSI circuit for detecting discontinuities in early vision

A large number of computer vision algorithms for finding intensity edges, computing motion, depth, and color, and recovering the three-dimensional shape of objects have been developed within the framework of minimizing an associated "energy" or "cost" functional. Particularly successful has been the introduction of binary variables coding for discontinuities in intensity, optical flow field, depth, and other variables, allowing image segmentation to occur in these modalities. The associated nonconvex variational functionals can be mapped onto analog, resistive networks, such that the stationary voltage distribution in the network corresponds to a minimum of the functional. The performance of an experimental analog very-large-scale integration (VLSI) circuit implementing the nonlinear resistive network for the problem of two-dimensional surface interpolation in the presence of discontinuities is demonstrated; this circuit is implemented in complementary metal oxide semiconductor technology.

Sexual difference in pattern of hormone accumulation in the brain of a songbird

After adult zebra finches (Poephila guttata) received injections of tritiated testosterone, fewer hormone-concentrating cells were found in females than in males in two brain regions involved in song: hyperstriatum ventrale pars caudale and magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum. In some other regions, no sexual difference was detected. It is, therefore, possible that sex differences in the sensitivity of specific neural populations to hormones underlie the striking anatomical dimorphism observed in neural regions controlling song.

[目的]调查分析贵州喀斯特地区农民专业合作社发展的不同要素需求,为农民专业合作社不断完善提供科学依据和指导.[方法]选取10个可能对农民专业合作社发展产生影响的要素,运用统计方法对各要素进行综合评价,分析贵州喀斯特地区农民专业合作社对不同层次发展要素的需求状况;利用因子分析法对各要素进行分析,并针对不同层次发展要素需求提出建议.[结果]贵州喀斯特地区农民专业合作社对规模化生产、农民组织化及技术人才的需求量比例均维持在50.00%以上(含50.00%),对资金、基础设施、市场营销能力、生产设备和品牌的需求量比例在20.00%~50.00%,对厂房和劳动力的需求量比例只有2.22%.因子分析结果显示,资本影响因子(资金、生产设备、基础设施)、组织影响因子(规模化生产、农民组织化、技术人才)、劳动力影响因子(劳动力、厂房)和品牌影响因子(品牌、市场营销能力)对农民专业合作社发展影响的方差贡献率分别为23.534%、21.568%、16.966%和16.836%,即农民专业合作社对资本影响因子的需求程度最高,其次是组织影响因子和劳动力影响因子,对品牌影响因子的需求程度排名最低.[建议]应根据研究区农民专业合作社对发展要素需求的"高、中、低"程度对其进行差异化投入.针对选择高需求发展要素的农民专业合作社,要加强组织动员,强化其社员组织能力,同时加强人员技术培训;针对选择中度需求发展要素的农民专业合作社,要在现有的物质资料基础上强化其市场营销能力和品牌建设力度;针对选择低需求发展要素的农民专业合作社,要做好富余劳动力向新型职业农民的转移.

总结分析了水稻病虫专业化防治的3种模式.公司化模式成效好、发展快,增产幅度较大,经济效益高;植保部门和能人合作模式节本明显,经济效益较高;乡镇农技站运作模式也具有较好的经济效益.3种模式都避免了高毒农药的使用、有效地促进了植保新技术的推广、有效地推进了,植保专业化和机械化.提出公司化模式有着更大的发展空间,但应注意明确"政府支持,技术部门指导,植保服务公司运作,农民自愿参与"的思路,加强宣传推广力度,争取政府和社会的扶持.

Pregnancy-stimulated neurogenesis in the adult female forebrain mediated by prolactin

Neurogenesis occurs in the olfactory system of the adult brain throughout life, in both invertebrates and vertebrates, but its physiological regulation is not understood. We show that the production of neuronal progenitors is stimulated in the forebrain subventricular zone of female mice during pregnancy and that this effect is mediated by the hormone prolactin. The progenitors then migrate to produce new olfactory interneurons, a process likely to be important for maternal behavior, because olfactory discrimination is critical for recognition and rearing of offspring. Neurogenesis occurs even in females that mate with sterile males. These findings imply that forebrain olfactory neurogenesis may contribute to adaptive behaviors in mating and pregnancy.     

Sand dollar: a weight belt for the juvenile

Juvenile sand dollars (Dendraster excentricus) selectively ingest heavy sand grains from the substrate and store them in an intestinal diverticulum which may function as a weight belt, assisting the young animal to remain in the shifting sandy environment. The sand disappears from the diverticulum when the animal reaches the length of 30 millimeters.
