Reproductive traits and calving weight were assessed in Saudi camels, and non-genetic factors influencing them were studied
using data collected at Al Jouf centre from 1987 to 2009. Age at first conception, age at first calving, open period, calving
interval, gestation length and weight at calving of camels averaged 42.3 months, 54.8 months, 10.6 months, 22.6 months, 377.5 days
and 591.9 kg, respectively. A mixed model including the camel as a random effect was used to assess the effect of environmental
effects on the traits studied. Age at first conception and age at first calving were affected by camel’s birth year. Open
period and calving interval were not affected by parity or year of calving. However, camels that calved from October to February
had a calving interval of 2.5 months higher than those that calved from March to September. Gestation length was affected
by season and year of calving but not by parity or sex of calf. Camels calving from March to September had a gestation length
6.6 days shorter than those calving from October to February. Weight at calving was affected by parity and year of calving
but not by season of calving. It was concluded that an improvement in camel reproductive traits is possible both through improving
management systems and utilisation of controlled breeding techniques. 相似文献

Information about genetic parameters is essential for selection decisions and genetic evaluation. These estimates are population specific; however, there are few studies with dairy cattle populations reared under tropical and sub‐tropical conditions. Thus, the aim was to obtain estimates of heritability and genetic correlations for milk yield and quality traits using pedigree and genomic information from a Holstein population maintained in a tropical environment. Phenotypic records (n = 36 457) of 4203 cows as well as the genotypes for 57 368 single nucleotide polymorphisms from 755 of these cows were used. Covariance components were estimated using the restricted maximum likelihood method under a mixed animal model, considering a pedigree‐based relationship matrix or a combined pedigree‐genomic matrix. High heritabilities (around 0.30) were estimated for lactose and protein content in milk whereas moderate values (between 0.19 and 0.26) were obtained for percentages of fat, saturated fatty acids and palmitic acid in milk. Genetic correlations ranging from −0.38 to −0.13 were determined between milk yield and composition traits. The smaller estimates compared to other similar studies can be due to poor environmental conditions, which may reduce genetic variability. These results highlight the importance in using genetic parameters estimated in the population under evaluation for selection decisions. 相似文献

The milk protein genetic structure of the Reggiana dairy local cattle with remarkable milk quality properties was analysed and compared with the structure of Italian Friesian and Italian Brown cattle. A total of 1138 individual milk samples from the three breeds were typed by isoelectrofocusing. Polymorphism was found at the αs1‐casein ( CSN1S1), β‐casein ( CSN2), κ‐casein ( CSN3), and β‐lactoglobulin ( LGB) loci. High frequencies were observed for some casein alleles in Reggiana ( CSN1S1*C, 25%; CSN2*B: 28%) with considerable differences to those observed in a survey carried out 30 years before. A great variation among breeds was observed for casein haplotype frequencies and high linkage disequilibrium was detected at the three polymorphic casein loci CSN1S1‐CSN2‐CSN3. The prevalent haplotypes were CA2B (23%; Reggiana), BA2A (48%; Italian Friesian) and BA2B (51%; Italian Brown). Higher GST values between breeds were observed when haplotype frequencies were considered instead of gene frequencies. In the Reggiana cattle, the occurrence of two casein alleles at a rather high frequency ( CSN1S1*C, CSN2*B) allowed to estimate the effects of rare casein haplotypes on milk traits. The CA2B haplotype was associated with a significantly higher milk protein and fat content and a significantly higher protein per cent was found also for the BA1B haplotype. 相似文献

Performance records on Hereford cattle raised in two herds were used to evaluate cytoplasmic genetic effects on preweaning growth and milk production. Animals were traced through maternal lineage to foundation females to form cytoplasmic lines. Growth records were available on 1,189 calves at Raleigh and 1,599 at Plymouth representing 27 and 15 cytoplasmic lines, respectively. Milk records were available on 418 cows at Raleigh and 522 cows at Plymouth, representing 20 and 13 cytoplasmic lines. After adjustment for sire, cytoplasmic effects were significant for birth weight (BWT), average daily gain (ADG) and 205-d weight (WT205) in both herds. Cytoplasm accounted for 2, 5 and 5% of the variance for BWT, ADG and WT205 at Raleigh; and 1, 2 and 2% of the variance at Plymouth. After addition of maternal grandsire to the model, cytoplasm was still significant; however, variances were reduced at Plymouth. Cytoplasmic effects for milk yield were important at Raleigh (P less than .01) but marginal at Plymouth (P = .10). Variance components for cytoplasm accounted for 4 and 1% of the variance for milk yield at Raleigh and Plymouth, respectively. Ranges for least-squares constants for cytoplasmic lines corresponded to one of two standard deviations. Correlations among least-squares constants for ADG, WT205 and milk yield were high, suggesting that cytoplasmic effects were mediated through milk production. More research is needed to confirm these results before cytoplasmic inheritance is considered in breeding programs for beef cattle. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic associations between alternative somatic cell count (SCC) traits and milk yield, composition and udder type traits in Italian Jersey cows. Alternative SCC traits were test‐day (TD) somatic cell score (SCS) averaged over early lactation (SCS_150), standard deviation of SCS of the entire lactation (SCS_ SD), a binary trait indicating absence or presence of at least one TD SCC >400,000 cells/ml in the lactation (Infection) and the ratio of the number of TD SCC >400,000 cells/ml to total number of TD in the lactation (Severity). Heritabilities of SCC traits, including lactation‐mean SCS (SCS_LM), ranged from 0.038 to 0.136. Genetic correlations between SCC traits were moderate to strong, with very few exceptions. Unfavourable genetic associations between milk yield and SCS_ SD and Infection indicated that high‐producing cows were more susceptible to variation in SCC than low‐producing animals. Cows with deep udders, loose attachments, weak ligaments and long teats were more susceptible to an increase of SCC in milk. Overall, results suggest that alternative SCC traits can be exploited to improve cow's resistance to mastitis in Italian Jersey breed. 相似文献

The aim of the study was to assess crossbreeding effects for 305‐day milk, fat, and protein yield and calving interval (CI) in Irish dairy cows (parities 1 to 5) calving in the spring from 2002 to 2006. Data included 188 927 records for production traits and 157 117 records for CI. The proportion of genes from North American Holstein Friesian (HO), Friesian (FR), Jersey (JE) and Montbéliarde (MO) breeds, and coefficients of expected heterosis for HO×FR, HO×JE and HO×MO crosses were calculated from the breed composition of cows’ parents. The model used to assess crossbreeding effects accounted for contemporary group, age at calving within parity, linear regression on gene proportions for FR, JE and MO, and linear regression on coefficients of expected heterosis for HO×FR, HO×JE and HO×MO, as fixed effects, and additive genetic, permanent environmental and residual as random. Breed effects for production traits were in favour of HO, while for CI were in favour of breeds other than HO. The highest heterosis estimates for production were for HO×JE, with first‐generation crosses yielding 477 kg more milk, 25.3 kg more fat, and 17.4 kg more protein than the average of the parental breeds. The highest estimate for CI was for HO×MO, with first‐generation crosses showing 10.2 days less CI than the average of the parental breeds. Results from this study indicate breed differences and specific heterosis effects for milk yield traits and fertility exist in Irish dairy population. 相似文献

Variance components and genetic parameters were estimated for growth traits: birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), 6‐month weight (6MWT) and yearling weight (YWT) in indigenous Ethiopian Horro sheep using the average information REML (AIREML). Four different models: sire model (model 1), direct animal model (model 2), direct and maternal animal model (model 3) and direct–maternal animal model including the covariance between direct and maternal effects (model 4) were used. Bivariate analysis by model 2 was also used to estimate genetic correlation between traits. Estimates of direct heritability obtained from models 1–4, respectively, were for BWT 0.25, 0.27, 0.18 and 0.32; for WWT, 0.16, 0.26, 0.1 and 0.14; for 6MWT 0.18, 0.26, 0.16 and 0.16; and for YWT 0.30, 0.28, 0.23, and 0.31. Maternal heritability estimates of 0.12 and 0.23 for BWT; 0.19 and 0.24 for WWT; 0.09 and 0.09 for 6MWT and 0.08 and 0.14 for YWT were obtained from models 3 and 4, respectively. The correlations between direct and maternal additive genetic effects for BWT, WWT, 6MWT and YWT were –0.64, –0.42, 0.002 and –0.46, respectively. On the other hand, the genetic correlations between BWT and the rest of growth traits (WWT, 6MWT and YWT, respectively) were 0.45, 0.33 and 0.31, whereas correlations between WWT and 6MWT, WWT and YWT and 6MWT and YWT were 0.98, 0.84 and 0.87, respectively. The medium to high direct and maternal heritability estimates obtained for BWT and YWT indicate that in Horro sheep faster genetic improvement through selection is possible for these traits and it should consider both (direct and maternal) h2 estimates. However, since the direct‐maternal genetic covariances were found to be negative, caution should be made in making selection decisions. The high genetic correlation among early growth traits imply that genetic improvement in any one of the traits could be made through indirect selection for correlated traits. 相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth traits in Mexican Nellore cattle. A univariate animal
model was used to estimate (co)variance components and genetic parameters. The traits evaluated were birth weight (BW), weaning
weight (WW), and yearling weight (YW). Models used included the fixed effects of contemporary groups (herd, sex, year, and
season of birth) and age of dam (linear and quadratic) as a covariate. They also included the animal, dam, and residual as
random effects. Phenotypic means (SD) for BW, WW, and YW were 31.4 (1.6), 175 (32), and 333 (70) kg, respectively. Direct
heritability, maternal heritability, and the genetic correlation between additive direct and maternal effects were 0.59, 0.17,
and −0.90 for BW; 0.29, 0.17, and −0.90 for WW; and 0.24, 0.15, and −0.86 for YW, respectively. The results showed moderate
direct and maternal heritabilities for the studied traits. The genetic correlations between direct and maternal effects were
negative and high for all the traits indicating important tradeoffs between direct and maternal effects. There are significant
possibilities for genetic progress for the growth traits studied if they are included in a breeding program considering these

An understanding of influencing factors and genetic principles affecting the growth traits is needed to implement optimal breeding and selection programs. In this study, heritabilities (direct additive and maternal) of body weights at birth (BW0), 90 days (BW90) and 300 days (BW300) of age and average daily gains from birth to 90 days (ADG0-90), birth to 300 days (ADG0-300) and 90 days to 300 days (ADG90–300) of age in Boer goats were estimated on the basis of 1520 Boer goats at Boer Goat Breeding Station in Yidu, China, during 2002–2007. The parameters were estimated using a DFREML procedure by excluding or including maternal genetic or permanent maternal environmental effects, four analysis models were fitted in order to optimize the model for each trait. Influencing factors such as parity, litter size, kidding year and season, as well as sex of kids and some significant interactions among these factors were investigated as the fixed effects for the models. The results showed that the birth year and maternal genetic effects such as parity and litter size of dam were important determinants of the genetic parameter estimates for pre-weaning growth traits, and environmental effects such as birth year, season and sex of kids had some significant effect on post-weaning growth traits. The mean values and standard errors (SE) of direct additive heritability estimates calculated with the optimum model were 0.17 ± 0.07, 0.22 ± 0.08, 0.07 ± 0.07, 0.10 ± 0.08, 0.30 ± 0.12 and 0.08 ± 0.10 for BW0, BW90, ADG0-90, BW300, ADG0-300 and ADG90–300, respectively. For pre-weaning weights, correlation estimates between direct additive and maternal genetic ( ra–m) effect were high and negative ranging from − 0.74 to − 0.86. 相似文献

Reproductive data were collected on 4,595 cow exposures and subsequent calvings over four generations in a rotational crossbreeding study involving Angus, Brahman, Charolais and Hereford breeds. Direct and maternal additive (Ig and Mg) and nonadditive (Ih and Mh) genetic effects were estimated for calving rate, calf survival, weaning rate, calving assistance and calf birth date. Genetic effects were estimated by regressing individual animal response on the proportion of genes from breed of origin and gene combinations expected for the four breeds in offspring and in dams. Breed direct and maternal additive and nonadditive genetic effects were expressed as a deviation from the least squares mean. Brahman Ig effects decreased calving and weaning rate (-9.5 +/- 4.0 and -11.8 +/- 4.4%) but Mh effects for weaning rate that included Brahman were positive, ranging from 16.5 +/- 6.7% for Angus-Brahman to 27.8 +/- 6.9% for Brahman-Hereford. The Brahman Ig effect delayed calf birth date (9.8 +/- 2.1 d; P less than .01), whereas Angus and Hereford Ig effects influenced earlier calf birth dates (-4.3 +/- 1.9 and -4.1 +/- 1.9 d; P less than .05). Brahman combination Mh effects also influenced earlier calf birth dates (P less than .01). The Charolais Ig effect for calving assistance was positive (4.3 +/- 1.9%; P less than .05), whereas Angus-Brahman and Brahman-Charolais Mh effects for calving assistance were negative (-6.5 +/- 3.2 and -7.0 +/- 3.2%; P less than .05) and more desirable. Predicted reproductive traits for rotational mating systems were intermediate between predicted reproductive traits for two- and three-breed terminal crosses. Predicted calving and weaning rates were maximized when Brahaman first-cross and Charolais-Hereford cows were used in three-breed cross mating systems. 相似文献

Spring-born purebred Brahman bull calves (n = 467) with known pedigrees, sired by 68 bulls in 17 private herds in Louisiana, were purchased at weaning from 1996 through 2000 to study variation in growth, carcass, and tenderness traits. After purchase, calves were processed for stocker grazing on ryegrass, fed in a south Texas feedlot, and processed in a commercial facility. Carcass data were recorded 24 h postmortem. Muscle samples and primal ribs were taken to measure calpastatin activity and shear force. An animal model was used to estimate heritability, genetic correlations, and sire EPD. Relatively high heritability estimates were found for BW at slaughter (0.59 +/- 0.16), HCW (0.57 +/- 0.15), LM area (0.50 +/- 0.16), yield grade (0.46 +/- 0.17), calpastatin enzyme activity (0.45 +/- 0.17), and carcass quality grade (0.42 +/- 0.16); moderate heritability estimates were found for hump height (0.38 +/- 0.16), marbling score (0.37 +/- 0.16), backfat thickness (0.36 +/- 0.17), feedlot ADG (0.33 +/- 0.14), 7-d shear force (0.29 +/- 0.14), and 14-d shear force (0.20 +/- 0.11); relatively low heritability estimates were found for skeletal maturity (0.10 +/- 0.10), lean maturity (0.00 +/- 0.07), and percent KPH (0.00 +/- 0.07). Most genetic correlations were between -0.50 and +0.50. Other genetic correlations were 0.74 +/- 0.27 between calpastatin activity and 7-d shear force, 0.72 +/- 0.25 between calpastatin activity and 14-d shear force, (0.90 +/- 0.30 between yield grade and 7-d shear force, and -0.82 +/- 0.27 between backfat thickness and 7-d shear force. Heritability estimates and genetic correlations for most traits were similar to estimates reported in the literature. Sire EPD ranges for carcass traits approached those reported for sires in other breeds. The magnitude of heritability estimates suggests that improvement in carcass yield, carcass quality, and consumer acceptance traits can be made within the Brahman population. 相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the milk production potential and the impact of nongenetic factors on milk yield and composition of Tunisian dromedary camels. Milk recording and sampling were carried out at monthly intervals over complete lactation for 3 years from 95 camels reared in intensive and semi-intensive systems. The overall means of daily milk yield and fat, protein, total solids, and ash contents were 4.21 ± 1.98 l/day, 2.45 ± 0.9%, 2.67 ± 0.74%, 10.75 ± 1.41%, and 0.85 ± 0.08%, respectively. The total milk yield was 1388.41 ± 575.46 l/lactation for 11 months of lactation. The daily milk yield increased regularly throughout lactation until it reached its peak in the 4th month postpartum and then decreased until the 17th month postpartum. The chemical components, except ash, followed an opposite trend to the milk yield. Their minimum contents were recorded during the 7th and 8th months postpartum, while the maximum levels were observed during the 17th month postpartum. Regarding seasonal variation, the highest daily milk yield was recorded during summer (June), whereas the lowest was found in winter (December). In contrast, the maximum and minimum contents of fat and protein were observed during winter (December) and summer (July), respectively. Similarly, total solids content was maximum in January and minimum in August. Parity had no effect on daily milk yield, while all chemical components were higher in milk from primiparous than multiparous camels. Calf sex and management system did not affect the milk yield and composition. These results are useful in order to develop feeding strategies and breeding programs for improving milk production. 相似文献

This study presents genetic parameters for conformation traits and their genetic and phenotypic correlations with milk production traits and somatic cell score (SCS) in three Swiss dairy cattle breeds. Data on first lactations from Holstein (67 839), Brown Swiss (173 372) and Red & White breeds (53 784) were available. Analysed conformation traits were stature and heart girth (both in cm), and linear scores of body depth, rump width, dairy character or muscularity, and body condition score (only in Holstein). A sire model, with relationships among sires, was used for all breeds and traits and variance components were estimated using AS‐REML. Heritabilities for stature were high (0.6–0.8), and for the linear type traits ranged from 0.3 to 0.5, for all breeds. Genetic correlations with production traits (milk, fat and protein yield) and SCS differed between the dairy breeds. Most markedly, stronger correlations were found between SCS and some conformation traits in Brown Swiss and Red & White, indicating that a focus on a larger and more ‘dairy’ type in these breeds would lead to increased SCS. Another marked difference was that rump width correlated positively with milk yield traits in Holstein and Red & White, but negative in Brown Swiss. Results indicate that conformation traits generally can be used as predictors for various purposes in dairy cattle breeding, but may require specific adaptation for each breed. 相似文献

The main objectives of this study were to estimate genetic and phenotypic parameters for growth traits and prolificacy in the Raeini Cashmere goat. Traits included, birth weight (BWT), weaning weight (WWT), 6-month weight (6WT), 9-month weight (9WT), 12-month weight (12WT), average daily gain from birth to weaning (ADG1), average daily gain from weaning to 6WT (ADG2), average daily gain from 6WT to 12WT (ADG3), survival rate (SR), litter size at birth (LSB) and litter size at weaning (LSW) and total litter weight at birth (LWB). Data were collected over a period of 28 years (1982-2009) at the experimental breeding station of Raeini goat, southeast of Iran. Genetic parameters were estimated with univariate models using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedures. In addition to an animal model, sire and threshold models, using a logit link function, were used for analyses of SR. Age of dam, birth of type, sex and of kidding had significant influence (p < 0.05 or 0.01) all the traits. Direct heritability estimates were low for prolificacy traits (0.04 ± 0.01 for LSB, 0.09 ± 0.02 for LSW, 0.16 ± 0.02 for LWB and 0.05 ± 0.02 for SR) and average daily gain (0.12 ± 0.03 for ADG1, 0.08 ± 0.02 for ADG2, and 0.07 ± 0.03 for ADG3) to moderate for production traits (0.22 ± 0.02 for BWT, 0.25 ± 0.02 for WWT, 0.29 ± 0.04 for 6WT, 0.30 ± 0.02 for 9WT, 0.32 ± 0.05 for 12WT). The estimates for the maternal additive genetic variance ratios were lower than direct heritability for BWT (0.17 ± 0.03) and WWT (0.07 ± 0.02). 相似文献

Genetic parameters for feed efficiency traits of 380 boars and growth and carcass traits of 1642 pigs (380 boars, 868 gilts and 394 barrows) in seven generations of Duroc population were estimated. Feed efficiency traits included the feed conversion ratio (FCR), and nutritional (RFI(nut)), phenotypic (RFI(phe)) and genetic (RFI(gen)) residual feed intake. Growth and carcass traits were the age to reach 105-kg body weight (A105), loin eye muscle area (EMA), backfat (BF), intra-muscular fat (IMF) and meat tenderness. The mean values for RFI(phe) and RFI(gen) were close to zero and for RFI(nut) was negative. All the measures of feed efficiency were moderately heritable (h(2) = 0.31, 0.38, 0.40 and 0.27 for RFI(nut), RFI(phe), RFI(gen) and FCR respectively). The heritabilities for all growth and carcass traits were moderate (ranged from 0.37 to 0.45), except for BF, which was high (0.72). The genetic correlations of RFI(phe) and RFI(gen) with A105 were positive and high. Measures of RFI were correlated negatively with EMA. BF was more strongly correlated with measures of RFI (r(g) > or = 0.73) than with FCR (r(g) = 0.52). Selection for daily gain, EMA, BF and IMF caused favourable genetic changes in feed efficiency traits. Results of this study indicate that selection against either RFI(phe) or RFI(gen) would give a similar correlated response in carcass traits. 相似文献

Genetic parameters were estimated for birth weight and weaning weight from records collected on 1,894 Santa Gertrudis calves (939 bulls, 955 heifers) during the 8-yr period, 1978 through 1985. Variance and covariance components were estimated separately by sex and combined across sexes utilizing mixed-model, least-squares procedures (Henderson's Method 3). The mathematical model assumed for estimating variance and covariance components by sex included effects of year, sire-within-year and age of dam. Also, calf weaning age was included as covariate for birth weight and weaning weight. Estimates were obtained across sexes utilizing the same model, with the addition of effects of sex of calf and the sex-of-calf X age-of-dam interaction. Heritabilities and genetic and phenotypic correlations were estimated using paternal half-sib techniques. The heritability estimate for birth weight for bulls was 1.6 times larger than that for heifers (.38 +/- .12 vs .24 +/- .10). Conversely, the heritability estimate for weaning weight for heifers was 1.5 times larger than that for bulls (.45 +/- .12 vs .30 +/- .11). However, based upon their approximate standard errors, neither of these differences was significant. Heritability estimates calculated across sexes were .32 +/- .07 and .42 +/- .08 for birth weight and weaning weight, respectively. Estimates of genetic and phenotypic correlations of birth weight and weaning weight by sex were .43 +/- .21 and .31, respectively, for bulls and .33 +/- .22 and .27, respectively, for heifers.
