The incidence of butt rot in two consecutive rotations of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] in 28 permanent sample plots at four different sites in Denmark was evaluated. Incidence of butt rot was estimated by visual examination of stumps at final felling of the previous rotation and by examination of bore cores taken at the butt from a random sample of trees before first thinning of the subsequent rotation. There was no correlation between the incidence of butt rot at final felling of the previous rotation of Norway spruce and the incidence of butt rot at first thinning of the subsequent rotation of Norway spruce. The incidence of butt rot at final felling was between 19 and 100%, and at first thinning between 0 and 20%. The S-form of Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. was the most commonly found decay-causing organism at all sites. Root systems of 28 trees without decay at stump height in the present rotation were excavated to estimate the incidence of root rot. Heterobasidion annosum was found in only one root. Resinicium bicolor (Alb. & Schw. ex Fr.) Parm. was found in 25% of the excavated root systems. The result of the study shows that the incidence of butt rot at first thinning of Norway spruce is not necessarily higher on sites where the previous rotation was heavily infected than on sites where infection in the previous rotation was low.  相似文献

A simulation model was developed to predict the growth of a Norway spruce stand under risk of butt rot caused by Heterobasidion annosum stump infection and logging injuries. The simulation model was distance‐dependent; tree growth was predicted with a distance‐dependent model, and the spread of butt rot through root contacts depended on tree location. Infection of stumps and injured trees, and the spread of butt rot in the stand were stochastic processes whereas tree growth and mortality were treated as deterministic processes. The simulation model was used with the nonlinear optimization algorithm of ooke and J eeves (J. Assoc. Comput. Mach, 8, 212–229, 1961) to find the most profitable management schedule for an even‐aged, young stand. Optimization used four different stump infection rates and two spreading capacities from infected stumps. The profitability was evaluated by the expected soil expectation value (SEV) at a 3% interest rate. Two thinnings, both in winter‐time, and hence without H. annosum infections, resulted in the highest SEV. If any stump infection by H. annosum occurred, only one thinning and a shortened rotation were suggested. The optimal thinning rate tended to decrease but also large trees were removed with the increasing infection rate. Severe butt rot caused by Heterobasidion annosum (Fomes annosus)developed in two stands of first rotation Norway spruce on oldagricultural land within 11 years of first thinning. At SiteI (Devon), 11 per cent of thinning stumps and 23 per cent ofclear felled stumps were found to be decayed when examined soonafter the crop was felled at age 37 years. It is estimated thatbetween 4.4 per cent and 6.6 per cent of potential volume waslost on clear felling. Significant butt rot had also developedin a 33-year-old stand of Norway spruce in Site II (Aberdeenshire)11 years after a Scots pine nurse crop was removed. Here, thedisease was found to be widespread on an area of 2 ha, and 73per cent of trees had butt rot. Decay extended 3 m up the stems,and occupied significant areas of the butt. In both cases, thepresence of butt rot in the crops led to premature clear felling,which resulted in additional loss of potential revenue. It seems most likely that the disease became established followinginfection of thinning stumps by airborne spores of the fungus:at Site I, the thinning stumps were not protected whilst atSite II it would appear that a chemical or biological treatmentapplied to the pine stumps failed. Abstract

This study analysed the effects of young stand characteristics on optimal thinning regime and length of rotation periods for even-aged Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] stands. Stand development was based on a distance-independent, individual-tree growth model. The young stand data were collected from 12 well-stocked Norway spruce stands in southern Finland. Results showed that optimal thinning regimes and rotation period depend on site quality and initial stand characteristics. At the first thinning, optimal thinning type depended on initial density. Thinning from both ends of the diameter distribution turned out to be optimal for initially dense stands. At the second and subsequent thinnings, thinning from above was clearly superior. At a low interest rate, thinning from below was optimal for the first thinning regardless of stocking level. For the study data, optimal rotation periods varied from 61 to 92 years at 3% interest rate. The high variation in length of rotation period was due to the sensitivity of optimal length of rotation period to site qualities, initial stand structure and density.  相似文献

Management of a Norway spruce stand planted on a site infected by Heterobasidion coll. is problematic because the fungus spreads vegetatively from the colonized stumps of the previous generation to the new seedlings. Growing of mixed stand with more resistant tree species has been suggested to decrease the economic losses caused by butt rot in Norway spruce trees. The mechanistic simulation model Rotstand describing the spread of Heterobasidion coll. in coniferous stands of southern Finland was used to study the effect of planting Scots pines around colonized clear‐felling stumps of Norway spruce of the previous generation. Planting of Scots pines in clusters around colonized stumps markedly decreased the butt rot of Norway spruce trees at the age of 20 years and at clear felling. If the same number of Scots pines were planted randomly, the effect was weak. When the average diameter of colonized clear‐felling stumps was 30 cm, a Scots pine circle with a radius of 3 m resulted in the highest soil expectation value (SEV) at 2% discounting rate, whereas with 40‐cm stump diameter, a 4‐m radius produced the highest SEV. When the proportion of Heterobasidion parviporum in the old colonized stumps was 50% instead of 95%, planting pines around colonized stumps still clearly decreased the butt rot at the age of 20 years and in final felling.  相似文献

Butt rot in mixed conifer stands. 70 years old Pseudotsuga menziesii trees on sandy soil, grown together with Pinus syhestris, Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica were analysed for butt rot. 73 % resp. 70 % of the Douglas fir, 13% resp. 28% of the Scotch pine and 82% resp. 84% of the Norway spruce showed decay. The most frequent fungi in Pseudotsuga were Heterobasidion annosum, Calocera viscosa, Sparassis crispa, in Pinus Sparassis crispa and in Picea Heterobasidion annosum. In a neighbouring stand with 85 years old Pseudotsuga menziesii - more often thinned than the 70 years old stand - only 23 % of the trees were with decay.  相似文献

Abstract

The economic outcomes of stump treatment against spore infections of the root rot pathogen Heterobasiodion annosum s. l. were analysed based on simulations in four stands typical of Swedish forestry and forest management: (A) Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] stand on former agricultural soil (SI?=?32), (B) Norway spruce stand (SI?=?26) on forest land; (C) Mixed stand of Norway spruce and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) (SI?=?24) with only H. parviporum present, i.e. no infection of Scots pine and no possibility of interspecies spread of disease between hosts; and (D) same as C, but H. annosum s. str. (Fr.) Bref and H. parviporum Niemelä & Korhonen present, i.e. interspecies spread of disease possible. Models for disease development, growth and yield and cross-cutting were used in the simulations. The simulated decay frequency in Norway spruce trees ranged between 2 and 90%. Stump treatment at the previous final felling and in all thinning operations was profitable at interest rates 1 and 3% in stands A, B and D, but not in stand C. In stand C, no stump treatment at all or treatment in thinnings only gave the highest net future value. Implications for stump treatment in practical forestry are discussed.  相似文献

The spread of Heterobasidion parviporum Niemelä & Korhonen in roots of Norway spruce was studied in three unthinned first rotation stands of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] on former agricultural land in south-western Sweden. Heterobasidion parviporum was inoculated at stump height into the trunk of 135 standing trees in a randomized block design. One year after inoculation, two-thirds of the trees were thinned out and one-third was left standing. Half of the stumps left by thinning were treated with spores of Phlebiopsis gigantea (Fr.) Jül and half were left untreated. The spread of H. parviporum was examined both 3 and 5 yrs after inoculation. The rate of spread of H. parviporum and the proportion of infected roots were found to be significantly higher in the root systems of the stumps than in those of the standing trees. Treatment with P. gigantea had no significant effect on the development of H. parviporum in the stumps. There was a tendency 5 yrs after inoculation, however, for a lower proportion of H. parviporum-infected roots in the stumps treated with P. gigantea than in the untreated stumps. In conclusion, thinning of infected Norway spruce was found to increase the rate of spread of H. parviporum in the root systems of the infected trees, which could increase the risk of a rapid build-up of infection in the remaining stand.  相似文献

In this study simultaneous optimization of thinnings and clear-cutting was investigated. The density-dependent whole-stand model was specified for all relevant Finnish Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) site indices and solved by non-linear programming. Sensitivity analysis showed that in some cases and owing to endogenous thinnings the optimal rotation length may increase with the rate of interest and site fertility, and decrease with harvesting cost. The number of thinnings is more sensitive to changes in the rate of interest, logging conditions and site productivity for Scots pine stands than for Norway spruce stands. Economic optimization suggests that for both species the first thinning should be performed later than officially recommended. The last thinning should be heavier than officially recommended, especially at high rates of interest. This increases the optimal rotation length compared with solutions under restricted thinning intensity.  相似文献

Fruiting of Heterobasidion on cull pieces and stumps of Norway spruce was investigated in cutting areas and mature spruce stands located in southern Finland. Cull pieces of variable size and showing butt rot were left on three clear‐cut areas and in one thinned stand. Additionally, a part of the cull pieces was transported to mature forest sites with closed canopy. During the succeeding 3–4 years the cull pieces were investigated annually for sporocarps of Heterobasidion, and the area of actively sporulating pore layer of each sporocarp was measured. Root bases of spruce stumps in the logging areas were excavated and sporocarps found on the stumps also measured. At the onset of the experiment, Heterobasidion spp. were isolated from 76% of the cull pieces showing butt rot; 85% of the isolates were identified as H. parviporum and 15% as H. annosum s.s. During the following 3–4 years sporocarps were found on 20% of the 1938 cull pieces where Heterobasidion butt rot was initially detected visually. Sporocarp formation was promoted by advancement of butt rot, increasing cull piece diameter and end‐to‐end ground contact, but restricted by the colonization of the cull piece by Stereum sanguinolentum. Between‐site differences were significant but could not be explained by differences in tree cover. At the end of the investigation period the average sporulating area of Heterobasidion sporocarp per metre of cull piece was higher than the average sporulating area per stump at three of four logging sites. Hence, leaving cull pieces containing Heterobasidion butt rot at logging areas in southern Finland can considerably increase local production of Heterobasidion spores.  相似文献

The effect of the timing of precommercial thinning on the productivity of work was examined in young Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] stands in southern Finland. The common problem of large variation between sample plots in time studies was avoided by introducing a new approach based on a combination of stand measurements, tree-ring analysis and existing work productivity functions. The results indicated that a 2 year delay in the precommercial thinning of a stand was enough to cause an increase of 10-42% in the consumption of working time at a mean height of 1.5-3.1 m. At a later thinning, at a mean height 4.1-7.2 m, the increase was 8-24%. The development of the stand up to the first commercial thinning was not significantly influenced by a 2 year delay in the late precommercial thinning.  相似文献

On the basis of nine Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) and ten European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) thinning experiments in Germany, for which both residual and removed stock had been registered first during 1870, I scrutinize how moderate and heavy thinning from below (B-, C-grade) affects the production of merchantable volume compared with light thinning (A-grade). In relation to A-grade, cumulative merchantable volume (CV) of B- and C-grade amounts in average to 103–107% in juvenile and to 97–102% in mature Norway spruce stands. The corresponding findings for European beech are 101–106% and 94–102%. CV of individual stands varies between 89% and 130% for Norway spruce and 73% and 155% for European beech (CV of A-grade = 100%). These findings are substantiated by the relation between stand density (SDI) and periodic annual increment (PAI). On the B- and C-grade plots of spruce and beech, respectively, SDI was reduced down to 41–91% and 31–83% of the A-grade. When SDI is reduced in young stands, PAI follows a unimodal curve. Norway spruce’s PAI culminates in 109% if SDI is reduced to 59%; European beech’s PAI culminates in 123% when density is reduced to 50%. Whereas Norway spruce’s growth reacts most positively on thinning under poor site conditions and with increment reduction on favourable sites, European beech behaves oppositely. With stand development the culmination point of the unimodal relation moves towards maximum density, so that in older stands PAI follows the increasing pattern, which is the left portion of a unimodal curve. A model is presented which apparently unifies contradictory patterns of stand density–growth reactions by integrating relative stand density, average tree size and site fertility effects, and makes the findings operable for forest management.  相似文献

In order to obtain a more precise prediction of the distribution of each timber grade or log grade with regard to the volume of birch (Betula pendula Roth., B. pubescens Ehrh.) in models for long-term planning, ordered probit models were developed. These models were developed by using data from three mixed birch and Norway spruce stands in Norway. The data consisted of 168 stems. In Norway, three ordinary birch saw log grades are commonly used, with pulpwood as a fourth grade. In this study, these four grades were applied in addition to waste timber, which was treated as a fifth grade. The developed models showed that the grade distribution of birch trees of mixed birch and spruce stands was highly correlated with tree height (p<0.01) and height to first visible dry branch (p=0.081). The statistical significance of both models was good (p<0.0001), as measured by log likelihood test statistics. Classifying the 168 stems by saw timber or pulpwood in butt log led to greatly improved estimates (p<0.01). The developed models would allow the incorporation of timber grade in stand simulators, enabling more precise predictions regarding the economic implications of alternative management strategies for birch trees.  相似文献

Berries and mushrooms are increasingly appreciated products of Finnish forests. Therefore, there is a need to integrate them in silvicultural planning. Bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) is an economically important wild berry that is widely collected for household consumption and sale in North Karelia, Finland. In this study, bilberry yield models developed recently were included in a stand growth simulator and the joint production of timber and bilberry was optimized by maximizing soil expectation value (SEV) with 3% discounting rate, assuming that 75% of the bilberry yield is harvested. The effect of bilberry production on the optimal stand management increased with increasing bilberry price. With high bilberry prices (4–8 € kg−1) it was optimal to manage the mixed stand of Scots pine, Norway spruce and birch, and the pure stand of Norway spruce so as to promote bilberry production. In the Scots pine stand, where bilberry yields are higher, bilberry production affected optimal stand management already with a price of 2 € kg−1. Compared to timber production, joint production led to longer rotation lengths, higher thinning intensities, more frequent thinnings, and higher share of Scots pine in the mixed stand. The contribution of bilberries to the total SEV increased with increasing bilberry price and discounting rate. In the mixed stand and pine stand the SEV of bilberry production, calculated with 3% discounting rate, exceeded the SEV of timber production when bilberry price was 4 € kg−1.With 4% discounting rate this happened already with bilberry price of 2 € kg−1. It was concluded that forest management which promotes bilberry yields is the most profitable in pine stands where the potential bilberry yields are high.  相似文献

Stem and root rot of Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco. In 20 year old Douglas fir most of the butt rot was caused by Fomes annosus. Stem decay was central as well as eccentric reaching the sap wood in either case. The side roots of 20 year old Douglas fir were compared with those of a 40 year old stand with butt rot. In individual trees with decay there were less roots with Fomes annosus decay in the younger stand. Calocera viscosa was more abundant in the older stand. Soil conditions which might have favoured root rot in the young stand are discussed.  相似文献

Stem form and taper changes after thinning and thinning combined with N fertilization were studied in 23 Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and 46 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Sweden observed for 5-28 yrs. Average taper was calculated for the stem section 1.3-6.0 m above ground level and as the ratio between the diameter at breast height and total tree height for periods of 5-10 yrs. At the start of the experiment, before the first thinning, the dominant height was 12-15 m. Once 65% of the basal area had been removed in a single thinning from below, the remaining trees showed a strong increase in taper compared with trees in unthinned stands. Stems in stands treated with heavily recurrent thinnings from below also increased in taper, although the increases were not always statistically significant. Trees in thinned, N-fertilized Scots pine stands in middle and northern Sweden developed a more pronounced taper compared with stems in equally thinned, unfertilized stands.  相似文献

An ecosystem model (Sima) was utilised to investigate the impact of forest management (by changing both the initial stand density and basal area thinning thresholds from current recommendations) on energy wood production (at energy wood thinning and final felling) and management-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions for the energy wood production in Finnish boreal conditions (62°39′ N, 29°37′ E). The simultaneous effects of energy wood, timber and C stocks in the forest ecosystem (live and dead biomass) were also assessed. The analyses were carried out at stand level during a rotation period of 80 years for Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and Norway spruce (Picea abies L. Karst.) growing in different fertility sites. Generally, the results showed that decreased basal area thinning thresholds, compared with current thinning, reduced energy wood (logging residues) and timber production, as well as carbon stocks in the forest ecosystem. Conversely, increased thinning thresholds increased energy wood production (ca. 1–27%) at both energy wood thinning and final felling and reduced CO2 emissions (ca. 2–6%) related to the production chain (e.g. management operations), depending on the thinning threshold levels, initial stand density, species and site. Increased thinning thresholds also enhanced timber production and carbon stocks in the forest ecosystem. Additionally, increased initial stand density enhanced energy wood production for energy wood thinning for both species, but this reduced energy wood production at final felling for Scots pine and Norway spruce. This study concluded that increases in both initial stand density and thinning thresholds, compared with the current level, could be useful in energy wood, timber and carbon stocks enhancement, as well as reducing management-related CO2 emissions for energy wood production. Only 2.4–3.3% of input of the produced energy (energy wood) was required during the whole production chain, depending on the management regime, species and sites. However, a comprehensive substitution analysis of wood-based energy, in respect to environmental benefits, would also require the inclusion of CO2 emissions related to ecosystem processes (e.g. decomposition).  相似文献

The paper gives a brief overview of the background, history and main results of forest fertilization experiments on mineral soils in Norway. Positive results of initial phosphorus (P) fertilization on survival and growth of Norway and Sitka spruce have only been achieved in the coastal districts of western Norway. Other elements have seldom given any significant effect. In young and old stands of Norway spruce and Scots pine nitrogen (N) fertilization with 150 kg N ha -1 usually gave increment increases in the range of 1-2 m 3 ha -1 yr -1 , for a period of 6-8 yrs after application. Given individually, no other element has proved stimulating to stem growth in a similar way. In young Norway spruce stands P has often given additional growth response when given together with N. Liming has been shown to have no or negative effects on tree growth. Fertilization experiments have changed from being management orientated towards addressing the problems of possible nutrient imbalances.  相似文献

Abstract

Heterobasidion parviporum (Fr.) Niemelä & Korhonen and Heterobasidion annosum (Fr.) Bref. sensu lato are some of the major forest pathogens in the northern hemisphere causing root and butt rot to conifers. The relative susceptibility to H. parviporum was investigated in a full-sib family of Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] by inoculating a set of 252 cloned progenies from a controlled cross. Four ramets of each progeny were used and the 2-year-old rooted cuttings were incubated for 6 weeks under greenhouse conditions. The condition of the cuttings was assessed visually and all the plants were in excellent vigour with no mortality recorded during the experiment. To score the relative susceptibility, lesion length in the inner bark and fungal growth in the sapwood were measured. Among the progenies, significant differences were found for fungal growth in the sapwood (p<0.0005). There was no significant difference for lesion length; however, there was a significant positive correlation between fungal growth and lesion length. The broad-sense heritability was 0.11 for fungal growth. This shows that the genetic component for susceptibility to H. parviporum can be detected even within a full-sib family of Norway spruce and that there is a potential for mapping quantitative trait loci for this trait in Norway spruce.  相似文献
