This study demonstrates the correlation between stem form and compression wood content in 36 sampled trees from a 6-yr-old container grown Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.) plantation in central Sweden. Root analyses were carried out to examine causes for the high incidences of basal sweep. On the sampled trees basal sweep, stem sweep and maximum bow-height were measured. Discs were cut at different heights and the compression wood content was analysed using digital image analysis. Pith eccentricity and out-of-roundness were calculated for each disc as well as per stem. Compression wood and pith eccentricity was most pronounced near the stem base, where sweep tends to be high. In general, pith eccentricity increased with degree of basal sweep. As a conclusion, expression of basal sweep can be used to predict compression wood content in young Scots pine trees. This study also shows the importance of anchoring of a tree to prevent basal sweep formation due to instability.  相似文献

Stem form is often used as a sawlog assortment criterion and has an important effect on lumber recovery and mechanical properties. Based on 7018 stems collected from the natural stands in 3 regions in eastern Canada, this study quantified the variations in stem form (taper, sweep and eccentricity) for five major commercial softwood species, viz., jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.), black spruce (Picea mariana), white spruce (Picea glauca), red spruce (Picea rubens) and balsam fir (Abies balsamea). The majority of the stems had a diameter at breast height (DBH) ranging from 10 to 32 cm and total tree height from 10 to 20 m. Stem taper and butt taper increased steadily from 0.38 to 1.75 cm/m and from 0.74 to 4.23 cm/m, respectively, with DBH increasing from 8 to 48 cm. Stem sweep and basal sweep ranged from 0.12 to 7.28 cm/m and from 0.12 to 9.85 cm/m, respectively, with mean values of 0.87 and 0.95 cm/m. There were no significant differences in stem sweep and basal sweep between DBH classes and both sweeps distributed over a wide range within DBH classes, species and regions. About 0.77% of the stems and 1.2% of the butt logs had seriously curved shapes (sweep >3.0 cm/m). Eccentricity (ratio of smaller diameter to larger diameter) at the breast height (0.96) was very close to 1. Balsam fir and jack pine had the best and worst stem forms, respectively, while stem forms in black spruce were in-between. Butt logs were most seriously curved in red spruce and most tapered in white spruce. Region C (mainly eastern Quebec and the Atlantic Provinces) produced stems with smaller butt taper, basal sweep and stem sweep and larger eccentricity compared with other regions in eastern Canada. Overall stems in eastern Canada have a good stem form in terms of taper, sweep and eccentricity. The evaluation of stem form provides valuable timber quality information for the wood industry to optimize wood processing as well as for forest managers to define appropriate silvicultural regimes to improve stem form and economic value.  相似文献

The presence of trunk swellings caused by the rust fungus Melampsorella caryophyllacearum was systematically surveyed in an Abies alba forest (Irati, NE Spain), using 1237 circular plots (diameter = 18 m). The relationship between fungal presence and several abiotic (aspect, elevation, distance to the nearest river and slope) and biotic factors (basal area of A. alba and/or Fagus sylvatica, shrub, fern and herb cover) was assessed through correlation and ordination analyses. Additionally, the spatial pattern of the presence of diseased trees was described using Ripley's K function. Southern‐aspect plots had a significantly lower presence of diseased trees than plots‐oriented north, east and west. Plots with diseased trees were located at a significantly lower elevation, and at a shorter distance to the river than plots without infections. Plots with diseased trees had almost twice the average A. alba basal area, and less average F. sylvatica basal area than plots without diseased trees. However, similar mean values of slope and shrub, fern and herb cover were found in both types of plots. The disease showed spatial aggregation in patches with a mean radius of ca. 900 m. The implications of the results for disease management are discussed.  相似文献

[目的]了解沙地樟子松天然纯林中枯立木的数量及空间结构特征,探究枯立木形成的原因,为樟子松林的保护和经营提供依据。[方法]在沙地樟子松天然纯林中设置2块1 hm~2的大样地,用全站仪对样地中所有胸径大于5 cm的立木进行定位并进行全面调查;对调查样地的基本特征,枯立木的数量特征及径级分布进行了分析,提出了用于表达林分中枯立木微环境的活立木比的概念,并采用林分空间结构参数一元分布和二元分布分析方法,对枯立木与其最近4株相邻木的关系进行分析。[结果]2块不同密度的樟子松天然纯林下更新幼苗和枯立木数量相差较大,密度较小(样地1)的样地更新幼苗和枯立木较少,而密度较大的样地(样地2)中枯立木达到200棵,林下更新幼苗数量达到15 280株·hm~(-2);樟子松天然纯林样地内枯立木主要以小径级木为主,胸径集中在11 cm以下;样地1枯立木径级连续分布,幅度较窄;样地2中的枯立木径级幅度较宽,但在20 22 cm缺刻,有2株大于23 cm的枯立木;2块样地中枯立木的分布格局均为随机分布,样地1中枯立木周围的4株相邻立木大多为活立木,且胸径较枯立木大;样地2中,只有一半的枯立木周围的最近4株立木为活立木,且有三分之一以上的枯立木胸径不是最小的,枯立木有连续分布的现象。2块样地中枯立木的角尺度-大小比数二元分布特征的差异不明显,而角尺度-活立木比二元分布特征和大小比数-活立木比二元分布特征差异明显,样地1中枯立木的最近4株随机分布于其周围的相邻木为活立木且胸径大于枯立木的比例明显高于样地2,而枯立木最近4株随机分布于其周围的相邻木有枯立木的比例明显小于样地2。[结论]樟子松天然纯林枯立木以小径级林木为主,枯立木的数量与林分密度相关,林木竞争是林木死亡的主要原因,密度过大也会产生病虫害,因此,对天然樟子松纯林要进行适度经营,保持合理密度。  相似文献

Abstract

Autumn storms felled about 7 million m3 of forest in southern Finland in 2001. Windthrow area and timber characteristics, as well as numbers of standing spruce trees attacked and killed by Ips typographus, were recorded in 61 Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.]-dominated windthrow areas. Generalized linear models were used to identify significant variables predicting the risk for consequential tree mortality by I. typographus. None of the windthrow areas with fewer than 20 wind-felled spruce trees (WFS) (n=28) and only half of the areas with 20 or more WFS (n=33) harboured trees killed by I. typographus during the years 2003–2005. The quantity and diameter of WFS and the basal area of recently dead standing spruce trees correlated positively with the risk of tree deaths. This study indicates that in Finland, at endemic I. typographus population levels, it is safe to leave fewer than 20 WFS in managed forests. Retention of even larger quantities of trees does not seem to evoke significant numbers of consequential tree deaths by I. typographus in managed forests. However, in stands where the natural mortality of spruce trees is high, the risks of consequential tree deaths after wind disturbance will also be higher.  相似文献

Abstract

This study assessed variation in modulus of elasticity of trees and logs of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) trees. The study used 192 sample trees (c. 90–150 years) selected from 24 clear-felling forests in central and southern Sweden. Modulus of elasticity (MOE) assessed with transit-time technology on standing tree stems at 0.5–2.0m on the southern and northern side of each tree varied from 8.6 to 17.6 GPa. No systematic MOE difference was found between the southern and northern side of tree stems. The sometimes large MOE variations seen in some individual trees are probably a result of wood variation and wood defects. MOE assessed with resonance-based technology varied between 7.4 and 14.1 GPa for logs cut at similar height (<6.0 m). Models of MOE variation were derived from factors related to growth conditions at stand and tree level, with an R 2 adj of c. 0.46–0.62. The models indicate that growth and tree attributes associated with and/or creating less stem taper would yield trees with higher MOE.  相似文献

[目的]揭示不同形态重金属在行道树国槐各器官的富集特征。[方法]采用改进BCR连续提取法对北京市蓝靛厂北路旁的土壤和国槐的叶片、树枝、树皮、树干与树根中Cr、Ni、Mn、Cu、Zn、Cd和Pb等7种重金属元素进行提取,并用ICP-MS测定各形态重金属浓度。[结果]结果表明:树皮中7种重金属元素浓度最高,重金属元素在树根向树干、树干向树枝和树枝向树叶的迁移均以酸溶态为主。树皮和树干为重金属元素的主要贮存器官;重金属元素在叶片中以相对活跃的酸溶态存在。国槐对不同形态重金属的富集效能大小依次为:可氧化态可还原态酸溶态残渣态;国槐对7种重金属的平面富集效能和空间富集效能分别达到372.90 mg·m~(-2)和45.48 mg·m~(-3)。[结论]国槐各器官的重金属浓度存在显著差异;重金属元素在国槐体内的运输以酸溶态为主;重金属元素以相对稳定形态贮存在树皮和树干;国槐对可氧化态重金属的有效净化效率高于其他形态。  相似文献

I investigated the relationships between stem surface area outside bark and other stem dimensions for Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) and Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) trees. The stem dimensions used here were the basal area and the product of diameter at breast height (dbh) and total tree height. The regression equation of the stem surface area s against basal area g was s = 184.216g for the cedar trees and s = 156.878g for the cypress trees. The slope of the equation was significantly different between the two species. For the same dbh, the cedar trees tended to have a higher total tree height than the cypress trees. The cedar trees also had a larger surface area of relative stem form than the cypress trees. These results indicated that the difference in the slope was produced by the differences in both the stem slenderness and tapering between the two species. On the other hand, the regression equation between the stem surface area and the product of dbh and total tree height dh was s = 1.937dh for the cedar trees and s = 1.921dh for the cypress trees, whereas no significant difference in the slope was found. The obtained slopes for the cedar and cypress trees seemed to be in accord with that for other coniferous species reported in earlier studies, suggesting that the variation in the slope among coniferous species would be small. The estimation from the basal area would provide a simpler means for estimating the stem surface area and would be useful in obtaining an approximation of the surface area. By contrast, the estimation from the product of dbh and total tree height would provide a more accurate and precise estimate as well as a wider applicable range, i.e., a parameter for physiological growth models. In conclusion, it could not be judged which regression equation examined in the present study was superior to the other, and thus it was important to select an appropriate equation depending both on the purpose and on the time and labor available.  相似文献

[目的]传统造林树木种植点设计忽略了黄土坡面微地形对其生长的影响,研究切沟、塌陷地、缓台等微地形与现有林分乔木空间分布的耦合关系,可为近自然造林及乔灌混交水土保持林结构配置提供参考。[方法]以陕西省吴起县三道川流域内原状坡面及微地形的植被调查数据为基础,采用Arcgis9.3软件的空间分析工具和格局强度指标研究坡面微地形对乔木空间分布的影响。[结果]坡面微地形面积占样地面积的21.03%,微地形上乔木株数占样地总数的51.77%,乔木主要分布在坡面微地形上。乔木在切沟和缓台主要呈聚集分布,在塌陷和陡坎主要呈随机分布。乔木在不同坡面微地形分布差异极显著,榆树、小叶杨、山杏主要聚集分布在切沟,河北杨主要聚集分布在切沟和缓台,刺槐主要聚集分布在缓台。[结论]坡面各类微地形因其土壤水分等微生境差异而对乔木空间分布影响显著,在近自然植被重建中需根据坡面各类微地形生境及空间分布规律长期保持配置树木种植点,切沟以河北杨、小叶杨、榆树等树种为主,缓台以河北杨、刺槐搭配为宜,塌陷以河北杨、小叶杨为宜。  相似文献

[目的]松材线虫病是我国对森林危害和威胁最严重的病害,控制其传播媒介昆虫松褐天牛是防治松材线虫病的主要手段。作者发现的松褐天牛深沟茧蜂(Iphiaulax monochamusi Yang)是寄生松褐天牛中老龄幼虫的重要天敌。为明确松褐天牛深沟茧蜂的寄生率与寄主树木、寄主和环境因子的关系,开展了本研究。[方法]通过解剖46株松褐天牛危害致死的马尾松,调查了松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率与马尾松、松褐天牛和环境因子之间的关系。[结果]调查研究表明:寄主树木的高度、胸径和树龄对松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率没有显著影响,松褐天牛的数量对松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率亦没有显著影响,而松褐天牛幼虫龄期和松褐天牛幼虫在树干上的位置显著影响松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率。松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率与松褐天牛龄期呈显著正相关,其偏好寄生3~5龄幼虫;就天牛在其危害寄主树木上的位置而言,松褐天牛深沟茧蜂偏好寄生马尾松主干上部和在韧皮部危害的松褐天牛幼虫,其对位于马尾松树干上部的寄主幼虫寄生率最高,达27.38%,对在韧皮部生活、危害的寄主幼虫寄生率为20.18%,显著高于位于木质部生活的寄主幼虫寄生率(5.46%)。逐步回归分析表明:影响松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率的关键环境因子是寄主树木的坡位和其它天敌寄生率,其中,坡位与松褐天牛深沟茧蜂呈显著正相关,其它天敌寄生率与松褐天牛深沟茧蜂寄生率呈显著负相关。[结论]以上研究初步明确了松褐天牛深沟茧蜂的寄生率与寄主树木、寄主害虫和天敌之间的关系,为今后利用该重要天敌控制松褐天牛打下了基础。  相似文献

As a tree management tool, three treatments of crown pruning (total-pruning, half-pruning and no-pruning) were applied to Vitellaria paradoxa (karité) and Parkia biglobosa (néré) in agroforestry parkland systems in Burkina Faso. The area under each tree was divided into four concentric tree influence zones (Zones A: up to 2 m from the tree trunk, B: up to half of the radius of the tree crown, C: up to the edge of the tree crown and D: up to 2 m away from the edge of the tree crown). Millet production under these zones and outside was assessed during two cropping seasons over the study period of three years and the results showed that tree crown pruning had significant effect on millet production and the highest millet grain yield and total dry matter were produced under total-pruned trees (507 ± 49 and 2033 ± 236 kg ha−1 year−1, respectively). Light transmission, transpiration and soil nutrient status under the trees were also analysed in relation to millet production. The results of the analysis showed that total-pruned trees gave the highest millet production due to the reduction by crown pruning of the effects of large tree crowns on PAR transmission below crowns and rates of transpiration by trees. Soil was more fertile closer to the tree trunks than outside tree crowns. This may also be one of the reasons why millet overall performed better under Zone B than outside tree crowns. The higher production of millet under Zone B than under Zone A, the zone closer to the tree trunk, may be due to lower light intensity and more intense competition for water between trees and crops under Zone A. It was concluded that at least in the short term millet production could be improved by crown pruning of both karité and néré, but long term effects may depend on the ability of the trees to maintain the amelioration of soil fertility and on how quickly the trees recover from pruning. Growing agricultural crops under Millettia ferruginea (Hochst.) Baker, a tree that is endemic to Ethiopia, is an age-old practice in the country, but the beneficial effects of the tree on crops have not been scientifically quantified. To achieve this, four isolated and nearly identical Millettia trees growing on similar site conditions were selected and canopy coverage of each tree was divided into four radial transects. Four plots of 0.5 × 0.5 m were established on each radial transect at 0.5 to 1, 2.5 to 3, 4.5 to 5, and 6.5 to 7 m away from the tree bases. The control plot was established at 29.5 to 30 m. Composite soil samples from each of the four plots located at a comparable distance and at two soil depths, 0 to 10 and 20 to 30 cm, were collected and analyzed. The level of surface soil P, organic C, exchangeable base-forming cations and cation exchange capacity were all significantly higher (P < 0.000 to P < 0.015) under the trees than in the open field. Nutrient levels declined with depth and increasing distances from the tree trunk. Soil pH values did not show significant horizontal or vertical variations in all the soil samples analyzed. Maize plants grown on soils collected from underneath Millettia trees resulted in significantly better growth responses and higher dry matter yield as compared to the control (P < 0.001). Socioeconomic studies indicated that Millettia trees have good standing in the region both because of their desirable biological characteristics and because of their economic benefits.This revised version was published online in November 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Spatiotemporal patterns of standing and fallen dead trees were examined in two protected Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris L.)-Norway spruce ( Picea abies (L.) Karst.) forests in eastern Finland (Pahkavaara and Pönttövaara). In Pahkavaara the volume of standing dead trees was 10 m 3 ha -1 and the volume of fallen logs was 66 m 3 ha -1 , and in Pönttövaara the values were 48 m 3 ha -1 and 107 m 3 ha -1 , respectively. The areas differed with respect to the tree species composition, whereas the proportion of different decay stages was similar. Decay stage and dendrochronological analyses revealed the continuity of dead wood formation. The spatial pattern of standing dead trees was usually towards clustered. The volumes of fallen logs showed a spatial autocorrelation up to distances of 10-20 m. The results also suggest that the current amount and diversity of dead wood is rather high, but that forest succession is likely to lead to a less diverse state in the future.  相似文献

Stem form and taper changes after thinning and thinning combined with N fertilization were studied in 23 Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] and 46 Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Sweden observed for 5-28 yrs. Average taper was calculated for the stem section 1.3-6.0 m above ground level and as the ratio between the diameter at breast height and total tree height for periods of 5-10 yrs. At the start of the experiment, before the first thinning, the dominant height was 12-15 m. Once 65% of the basal area had been removed in a single thinning from below, the remaining trees showed a strong increase in taper compared with trees in unthinned stands. Stems in stands treated with heavily recurrent thinnings from below also increased in taper, although the increases were not always statistically significant. Trees in thinned, N-fertilized Scots pine stands in middle and northern Sweden developed a more pronounced taper compared with stems in equally thinned, unfertilized stands.  相似文献

The effect of tree harvesting on soil mineral nitrogen and microbiological activity were investigated in an agrisilvicultural system consisting of wheat cultivated along the sides of a poplar plantation in Sweden from 1993 to 1995. Sampling for mineral nitrogen was carried out in three layers down to 90 cm at two distances, near (0.5–1.5 m) and far (4.0–5.0 m) from rows of standing, ST, and harvested trees, HT. Sampling for basic respiration and substrate-induced respiration was carried out in the 0–10 cm layer in 1993 and in the 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm layers in 1994 at the same distances from trees.There was a higher concentration of ammonium and lower concentration of nitrate closer to trees, indicating an efficient uptake of nitrate by trees and enhanced N mineralization close to trees. Shortly after tree harvesting, there were higher concentrations of nitrate and ammonium in the 0–30 cm soil layer near the harvested trees than near standing trees, suggesting a derease in nitrogen uptake by tree roots. The soil microbiological activity was lower in the harvested than the standing plots of trees, which is considered as an indication of the important role of root exudates in maintaining a larger microbial biomass close to trees.  相似文献

Damage to residual stand after partial harvesting or thinning may lead to serious economic losses in terms of both timber quality at the final harvest, and tree growth reduction. Logging damages and their effect on tree growth were studied in a long term experiment on Corsican pine in central Italy. Damage frequency, agent (felling, skidding), position (root damage, stem base, between 0.3 and 1 m a.g.l., >1 m a.g.l.) and severity (light, severe) and tree growth were measured after selective thinning from below and at 10 years after the treatment. In detail, we aimed at: monitoring mechanical damages to trees at the end of thinning and after 10 years; and assessing stand stability, growing stock, ring width and basal area at 10 years after the thinning. The thinning removed about 20% of volume, 38% of trees and 26% of basal area. The basal area decreased from 56 m2 ha−1 to 42 m2 ha−1 but after 10 years it increased again to 56 m2 ha−1. Immediately after thinning, 13.6% of the standing trees was damaged, out of these 36.17% showed severe injuries. Damages to standing trees were mainly due to skidding. Ten years after thinning, the percentage of damaged trees was about 17%, out of which 86.67% showed severe wounds. An increase of damaged trees and of trees with severe wounds was observed suggesting that a deeper knowledge on long-term effect of logging damages is needed. This study did not highlight any effect of logging damage on tree growth. In fact, no difference in ring width was recorded between damaged and undamaged trees.  相似文献

Trunk phloem necrosis (TPN) is a major constraint in rubber (Hevea brasiliensis) plantations. Current knowledge supports a scenario of a multi‐factor physiological ‘disease’ caused by an accumulation of endogenous and exogenous stresses. Without evidence of a pathogen, the apparent spread of the syndrome from tree to tree along the planting line, strongly suggested the implication of a major local soil constraint. The objectives of the study were to address, within a plot, three points of the above scenario: the short‐distance aggregation of affected trees; their correspondence with local micro‐areas facing the highest environmental constraints; and the relative weakness of TPN trees that had accumulated several stresses since planting. The study was conducted in a young rubber tree stand (clone RRIM 600) of Northeast Thailand, where the number of TPN affected individuals was 8% after 3 years of tapping. Trunk girth and trunk basal area were used as indicators of local environmental constraints. Spatial patterns were analysed using the framework of marked point processes and K functions. The results confirmed the short‐distance aggregation of TPN affected trees. But, TPN trees were not located within micro‐areas where trees had a lower trunk basal area than average. Hence, the clusters of TPN do not occur in the most constraining environmental micro‐areas of the plot in terms of growth since planting. Moreover, from comparison of girth, current girth increment and height of bark consumption, we infer that TPN trees were not smaller and less vigorous than other trees before the syndrome outbreak. Finally, our conclusions mean the previous scenario driven by major soil constraints becomes a ‘more complex scenario’ in which specific soil conditions (not the most constraining in term of cumulated growth), possibly in interaction with inter‐individual competition, induce a late and subtle stress favouring a necrotic reaction against tapping stress.  相似文献

Performance of mustard (Brassica campestris) crop cultivated underAcacia nilotica single tree, grown under irrigated and rainfed situations was studied for plant population and biomass production. Root behaviour of trees and mustard crop under tree canopy and open areas was also studied. Plant density and biomass production of mustard crop declined with increasing tree canopy depth towards tree trunk. There was a 64.58% reduction in biomass production under an irrigated field upto 4 m and cent percent up to 3 m in rainfed fields as compared to per unit mean yield data recorded at 21 m distance from the tree base in an open field. The plant density and biomass production data and root behaviour of both trees and crop showed a close relationship. The plant density and yield of crop tend to increase with the increase in depth of tree roots. Irrigating the mustard field enhances crop yield and plant density in the affected area as compared with the rainfed field.  相似文献

We evaluated the effect of bark stripping by sika deer (Cervus nippon), and subsequent wood decay, on tree fall in a coniferous forest on Mt Ohdaigahara in central Japan from July to September 2006. This valuable primeval coniferous forest is declining because of bark stripping. Broken trunks of Abies homolepis and Picea jezoensis var. hondoensis had more serious decay and larger bark-stripping wounds on the trunk than standing trees, suggesting that bark stripping causes trunk decay and results in broken trunks and uprooting by typhoons.  相似文献

The study was undertaken to evaluate form factors for Pinus kesiya growing in the three Zambia Forest and Forestry Industries Corporation (ZAFFICO) plantations – the Ndola, Ichimpe and Chati groups – under different rainfall (900–1 500?mm) and soil conditions (pH 4.0–5.5). Trees were sampled from the three plantation groups and 10 sample plots were established in which 10 trees were randomly sampled for cutting. Height and diameter at breast height (dbh) were the main variables that were measured and constituted the collected data. The trees were then felled and cut into segments of 0.5?m from the bottom to the top of the tree and segment diameters over bark were measured at both ends. The form factor for each tree was then calculated by dividing the sum of the volume of the tree segments by the estimated cylindrical volume of the standing tree. The results showed significant differences (p-value<0.05) in form factors among the three plantation groups. The study further showed a significant difference in form factor when the three plantation groups were compared with a fixed form factor (0.4) used by ZAFFICO plantations, indicating that the form factors are site specific. Therefore, for the benefit of customers and plantation owners, it is important that area-specific form factors should be used for each plantation group, as these groups are affected by different factors such as soils characteristics and rainfall, which have a direct effect on the form factor.  相似文献
