Survival and vitality of Gremmeniella abietina on Pinus sylvestris slash was studied in northern Sweden during 2003 and 2004. Once a month between September 2003 and April 2004, two to three trees were cut down and debranched. Shoots with pycnidia were sampled at the felling date and then at every consecutive month. The percentage of germinated conidia from each shoot was calculated after 24, 48 and 72 h incubation. The vitality of G. abietina pycnidia in the slash remained high the whole period. Intact pycnidia were found on slash several months after the time of conidial sporulation, which indicates that new pycnidia may be produced on dead pine branches. Sampling of shoots from slash on 13‐ to 18‐month‐old clear‐cuts showed conidial germination capacity as high as in pycnidia collected in fresh slash. Due to survival of G. abietina in slash it is recommended to postpone planting of P. sylvestris seedlings in northern boreal areas to the third vegetation period after sanitary clear‐cuts.  相似文献

Genomic DNA from 81 isolates of Gremmeniella abietina collected from eleven plantations each of Pinus sylvestris and Pinus contorta in northern Sweden was studied using RAPD markers. The DNA variation between and within populations and the race and type distribution of G. abietina populations, causing symptoms similar to those of the North American race, were studied. The degree of genetic similarity was greater among G. abietina isolates from the same geographical areas than among isolates from different geographical areas, regardless of whether they were isolated from P. sylvestris or P. contorta. RAPD variation was greatest in the central parts of northern Sweden, suggesting that sexual reproduction has been somewhat more important there than further north or south. Only the RAPD fragments characteristic of the EU race of G. abietina were found in the material tested. The RAPD pattern described as characteristic of the northern type within the EU race was identified in 62% of the isolates. Divergence from the expected profile was due to differences in occurrence of fragments OPA12-1400 and 12-1500. This indicates that this part of the RAPD profile cannot be treated as diagnostic for the northern type. A conclusion of practical importance is that there is a considerable risk of G. abietina spreading from infected P. contorta plantations to adjacent areas with indigenous P. sylvestris regeneration, and vice versa, owing to the indicated lack of host-specificity of the pathogen. It is possible, however, that host-specific strains exist, but do not differ in their RAPD profiles.  相似文献

The mycelial growth of 24 isolates of types A and B of Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet, collected in northern Finland and the Kola peninsula, Russia, was studied on malt agar plus pine needle extract at 18°C and 5°C. Great variation occurred within both types, and the results suggest that several isolates per stand are needed to represent one local isolate, if responses of G. abietina mycelia are studied on artificial media.  相似文献

The ascomycete Gremmeniella abietina causes a disease (scleroderris canker) on conifers. The pathogen kills terminal shoots and branches of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies, sporulates on host shoots and causes leader changes (i.e. dieback). Damage caused by G. abietina was investigated in young P. abies and P. sylvestris plantations in northern Finland. Side branches from seedlings of both species and the main stems of P. sylvestris were collected from three sites in two locations (Poksa 1 and 2, Kivalo) in northern Finland. The number of cankers and leader changes was counted in branches of each age (i.e. year) in a total of ca. 6300 shoots of P. abies and 1200 shoots of P. sylvestris. Cankers were common on both P. abies and P. sylvestris in Poksa 1 (2002–2008) and on P. abies in Poksa 2 (1998–2001). In Kivalo, cankers occurred only sporadically on P. sylvestris. Leader changes were most frequent in 1999–2009 in Poksa 1, in 2001–2009 in Poksa 2 and in 2003 in Kivalo. Cankers and other symptoms of infection were more obscure on P. abies than on P. sylvestris. According to both conidial morphology and molecular analysis, the strain of G. abietina infecting both P. abies and P. sylvestris was small‐tree type (STT). This is the first report of G. abietina, STT or B type, injuring P. abies in plantations.  相似文献

Mortality of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) advance growth seedlings following overstorey removal was studied in nine stands in north Sweden. In each stand, one 40 × 40 m plot was established for each of four different intensities of overstorey removal: 0% (control), 60%, 85% and 100%. Seedlings were monitored on one 18 × 18 m sub‐plot at the centre of each plot for two or three growing seasons following overstorey removal. For seedlings taller than 100 mm, mortality and number of injured seedlings after two growing seasons increased significantly with increasing basal area removal. Seedlings ≤ 100 mm showed the same trend, though not statistically significant. For the height interval > 100 ≤ 500 mm, mortality was not significantly influenced by seedling height. Most of the mortality and the injuries to seedlings were caused by Hylobius abietis (L.) and Pissodes spp. It is concluded that insect damage to released Scots pine advance growth in northern Sweden is a common problem.  相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings were planted in a nursery bed 20 cm thick. The substrate had been removed from an illuvial horizon in the soil underlying a stand of Scots pine in Finland, which had suffered from severe infection by Gremmeniella abietina. The seedlings were irrigated for 3 years, applying three pH levels (2.5, 3.5, and 4.5) using sulphuric acid, nitric acid, and a 3:1 mixture of sulphuric and nitric acid. The pH of the pure water used in the control treatment was 6.1–6.4. The seedlings were inoculated with the conidiospores of G. abietina to find out their susceptibility to infection with the Scleroderris canker disease. Because to the adequacy of its buffering capacity, the soil was observed to become more acidic only in the treatments at pH 2.5. The concentrations of extractable Ca and Mg cations decreased while the concentration of Al and Fe increased with soil acidification during the 3-year experiment. Acidification did not increase the susceptibility of Scots pine to infection by the Scleroderris canker. Seedling growth was at its maximum in the acidification treatments where most nitrogen was added.  相似文献

Gremmeniella abietina isolates from Pinus contorta in northern Sweden produced, in vitro, shorter conidia with fewer septa compared with isolates from Pinus sylvestris in the southern part of the country. After mycelial inoculation of shoots with G. abietina isolates from both host species, the resulting necroses were longer in P. sylvestris than in P. contorta. Keeping seedlings in artificial mild winter climate or detaching shoots from the seedling before inoculation caused longer necroses. No host specificity in colonization was found. Isolates from P. sylvestris caused longer necroses than did isolates from P. contorta, and both types of isolates caused longer necroses in P. sylvestris than in P. contorta. The differences found between the two G. abietina populations probably reflect regional variation in the fungus.  相似文献

The morphological and ecological variation of two types of Gremmeniella abietina var. abietina causing scleroderris canker on conifers was investigated in Pinus spp. and Picea sp. sapling stands in northern Finland and the Kola Peninsula. Small - tree type (STT or B type) of G. abietina was detected alone in 13 Scots pine, three lodgepole pine and two Norway spruce sapling stands out of 26 stands investigated, both STT and large - tree type (LTT or A type) were observed in six Scots pine stands, and LTT was detected alone in two Scots pine stands. For the first time, G. abietina was found to injure Norway spruce saplings in a respective plantation in northern Fennoscandia. STT isolates produced statistically significantly more conidia in vitro than LTT isolates. Morphological variation in conidia septation revealed that STT produced conidia with more than five septa more frequently than did LTT. There was a greater range in variation in septation in STT than in LTT, with overlapping between the types. Isolates of both types were equally associated with cankers, coloured wood, pycnidia or apothecia in the infected saplings.  相似文献

Aspects of the life cycle of Gremmeniella abietina (Lagerb.) Morelet were studied from 1988 to 1990 in stands of Pinus sylvestris L., 16–32 years old, in southern Sweden, initiated in 1988 with a widespread outbreak of the disease. Pycnidia started to release conidia in late spring and apothecia began to release ascospores in summer. Latent infections could still be detected one year after their establishment by cultivation of healthy looking shoots on agar petri dishes. G. abietina appeared to have a mainly biennal life cycle, as most spores were released two years after infection of the shoot.  相似文献

Six short‐term freezing experiments were carried out on 24 one‐year‐old single‐tree open pollinated families of Pinus sylvestris (L.) representing four populations in northerly Sweden (latitude 62°10'N to 66°50'N). Two experiments were conducted in a climate chamber, two in a greenhouse and two outdoors. For freeze testing the plants were exposed to ‐10°C for three hours in a freezing chamber. A freezing experiment in a climate chamber of 28 one‐year‐old full‐sib families (half diallel with two parents from each population) was also carried out. The results were related to the mortality of the same open pollinated families over the first 18 years in the field. The ranking of the populations was the same in all six freezing experiments as in the field. Significant differences in frost resistance between one‐year‐old open pollinated families were found within all populations except the most northern one. The correlations within populations between frost resistance and field mortality varied considerably between populations and freezing experiments. The results from the two greenhouse experiments showed the best correlations with the cumulative field mortality after 18 years. The freezing test of the 28 full‐sib families resulted in the same mutual ranking, according to the general combining ability of parents within populations, as was obtained from the freezing tests of single tree families.  相似文献

The patterns of current‐year shoot, needle and terminal bud elongation in seedlings of three Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and three lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) provenances were compared during the third and fourth growing seasons after planting. Lodgepole pine produced longer shoots and buds than did Scots pine, mainly because lodgepole pine formed more stem units and elongated at a faster rate. Stem unit length and the duration of shoot and bud elongation differed relatively little between species and provenances. Lammas or polycyclic growth occurred in some lodgepole pine provenances, but not in any Scots pine provenance, and was associated with enhanced shoot elongation. Needle elongation commenced earlier, proceeded at a faster rate, and was greater in lodgepole pine than in Scots pine, but ceased about the same time in all species and provenances. The heat sum required to attain 50% of final length was lower for shoots and needles in lodgepole pine than in Scots pine, and for shoots in northern provenances than in southern ones. Mitotic activity in the apical meristem of the terminal bud, which occurred less than one week after the seedlings were free from snow, started and ceased about the same time in each species, but was higher in lodgepole pine than in Scots pine early in the shoot elongation period.  相似文献

Survival at a mean height of 2.5 m was studied in eight experimental series comprising provenances of Pinus sylvestris (L.). A ninth series of planting experiments was used for verifying functions predicting local provenance survival. The estimated survival of local provenances declined as the temperature sum decreased, with the decline being most rapid close to timberline. Variation in survival within the same climatic region was large, especially in moderately harsh areas. Southward transfer increased survival. Transfer effects differed depending on the temperature sum at the growth site; the greatest effects were found in moderately harsh areas. Altitudinal transfer effects were small and inconsistent. Local provenance survival differed between series. Local provenance survival varied depending on topography and humidity. Transfer effects did not vary between series, nor were they influenced by site factors. Prediction confidence limits were used to estimate the risk for failure of single reforestation attempts.  相似文献

Abstract

The quantitative effect of pine-dominated edge stands in southern Finland on the density and growth of pine saplings was addressed in the study. The cumulative effect of a mature edge stand on the development of a pine sapling stand with variable cutblock sizes was also estimated. The data were acquired from 10 study sites with a Scots pine sapling stand with a current dominant height of 1–6 m and an adjoining middle-aged to mature edge stand dominated by Scots pine. Tree level models were constructed to describe and simulate the structure and development of the sapling stands. The results indicated that dividing an average regeneration area (2 ha) into smaller cutblock units (1.0–0.5 ha) appreciably increased the edge stand effect. Total stand volume growth was 6% lower on 1 ha cutblocks, and 31% lower on 0.5 ha blocks, than on 2 ha blocks.  相似文献

Cortical oleoresins were obtained from 10 natural populations of Pinus sylvestris L. from different geographical localities. Gas chromatography was used to determine quantities of individual monoterpenes. Considerable variation was found in monoterpene composition among different populations. High proportions of limonene occurred in greater percentages in trees of northern origins, while high sabinene was frequently found in southern trees. Mean proportions of limonene and sabinene in the populations were clinal with latitude. For some monoterpenes, variation coefficients as a measure of variability within populations appeared to be clinal with latitude. 85.4% of the variance in monoterpene composition was found within populations and 14.6 between populations. Discriminant analysis differentiates populations from different geographical localities into different groups. The differences in monoterpene patterns between adjacent populations were statistically nonsignificant. It is recommended that monoterpene composition be used for more general study of genetic variation, geographical distinction between different populations and seed certification purposes.  相似文献

Abstract

In Nordic countries, the harvesting of slash and stumps from regeneration areas for energy purposes has rapidly increased, and will increase further in the future. This development has unknown technoeconomic effects on soil scarification. This study investigated three spot mounding methods and factors affecting their quality, productivity and costs in regeneration areas after slash and stump removal. The methods were integrated stump lifting and spot mounding (INTE), separate excavator-based spot mounding (BLADE), and separate spot mounding by a continuously working mounding unit (CONT). The average quality of work was worst in INTE, while CONT was the most sensitive to stoniness. Average work times per spot mound were 4.1 and 3.1 times higher in INTE and BLADE, respectively, than in CONT. Altogether, the cost–quality ratio of CONT was better than that of the other methods, except in very small areas.  相似文献

The importance of site type and tree species on disease incidence of Gremmeniella abietina was investigated. Blocks of four conventional regenerations of Pinus contorta and Pinus sylvestris, situated on sites formerly supporting pure stands of P. sylvestris and Picea abies respectively, were examined for the occurrence of G. abietina. Trees planted on spruce sites were found to be more severely diseased by G. abietina than trees planted on pine sites. Pinus contorta was more severely attacked by G. abietina than P. sylvestris on both site types. The results show that plantations of P. contorta and P. sylvestris in areas originally covered with pure spruce forests run a high risk of damage by G. abietina.  相似文献

The effect of eight fungicides and 15 endophytes isolated from twigs of healthy Pinus halepensis trees on the growth rate of four Spanish isolates of the pathogen Gremmeniella abietina was evaluated in vitro. In the fungicide experiments, four doses of each fungicide tested were added to the growth medium. In the endophyte experiments, dual cultures endophyte‐pathogen were paired in Petri dishes. Furthermore, growth of three G. abietina isolates was evaluated on malt agar with pine needle extract amended with filtrates from cultures of endophyte E14, which produced a brownish compound apparently inhibiting G. abietina growth. The results obtained suggested that chlorothalonil and daconil were the most suitable fungicides at low doses to reduce growth of G. abietina isolates from Spain. Four of the endophytes tested in vitro showed strong antagonistic activity against G. abietina and deserve further testing in vivo. The endophyte E14 produced in vitro a brownish compound which almost completely inhibited mycelial growth of G. abietina isolates from Spain.  相似文献

? Context

The rising demand of energy wood for heating purposes in Germany leads to concerns regarding the overexploitation of forests. A major aspect is the impact of whole-tree harvesting on long-term productivity of forest soils.

? Aims

This study aimed to analyze the effects of nutrient removal on productivity using the historically prevalent practice of litter raking. Since there is a lack of controlled whole-tree harvesting experiments in Germany, we used litter raking as a surrogate management practice entailing the removal of nutrients from forest stands.

? Methods

We used three sites with documented litter raking to analyze the effects of nutrient removal on productivity using dendroecological methods: two recent litter removal experiments in two Scots pine stands (Siegenburg and Burglengenfeld) and one oak stand (Eichhall) with documented historic litter raking. Basal area increment (BAI) and tree-ring characteristics were compared between periods with litter raking and the preceding periods for both treatment and control plots.

? Results

For the two Scots pine sites with a relatively short litter raking period, no effects of litter raking on BAI could be ascribed to nutrient removal. On the oak site with a longer history of litter utilization, the loss in BAI due to litter raking amounts to 22 % during the period with active raking and to still 17 % in the recovery period.

? Conclusions

These results contribute to the still very limited understanding about the impact of whole-tree harvesting on forest productivity in Germany by laying down an upper limit of possible effects due to nutrient removal, as nutrient loss by litter raking tends to be higher than nutrient loss by whole-tree harvesting.  相似文献

Abstract

Pine stumps are not being treated against Heterobasidion spp. in Sweden. To determine whether they should be, the frequency of stump infections and the species of Heterobasidion involved were investigated in nine newly thinned pure Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in southern Sweden. The incidence of Heterobasidion was measured in roots of standing Scots pine in another 15 stands. Infections by both H. annosum (Fr.) Bref. s.s. and H. parviporum Niemelä & Korhonen were numerous in stumps six months after a summer thinning. The pathogen, mostly H. annosum, was found in 44 of 60 sampled root systems, from 14 of the 15 stands. Twenty of the infected pines were assessed as healthy on the basis of crown symptoms while 24 trees had defoliated crowns. Infected root systems were most frequent among trees with thin crowns in stands on former agricultural land, where previous thinnings had been carried out during the growing season when airborne spores are plentiful. The study suggests that stump treatment may be a profitable way to reduce disease development in Scots pine monocultures on sandy soils as well as in mixtures with Norway spruce [Picea abies (L.) Karst.] on any soil.  相似文献

Effects of temperature on shoot growth in northern provenances of Pinus sylvestris L. were studied under natural long-day conditions (Lat. 69 degrees 39' N) at controlled temperatures. The optimum constant temperature for formation of stem unit primordia in the terminal resting bud was 18 to 21 degrees C. Stem unit number decreased linearly with temperature between 15 and 9 degrees C. Temperature during bud formation had a significant effect on final stem unit length achieved in the following year. Final shoot length was significantly affected by temperature during shoot elongation. The optimum constant temperature for elongation growth was 18 to 21 degrees C. The rate of shoot elongation was positively correlated with the number of stem units.  相似文献
