The purpose of this study was to determine changes in resistive index (RI) and renal size that occur in normal feline kidney autografts in the immediate post-transplant period. Qualitative changes in renal parenchymal echogenicity and pelvic dilation were also noted, although this was not a major focus of the study. Fourteen domestic short-haired cats underwent bilateral nephrectomies followed by an autograft of the right kidney to either the aorta or external iliac artery. Due to post-operative complications, only nine of these cats completed the study. Ultrasonographic determination of the RI and renal size was made before transplantation and on days 1, 4, 7, 10, and 13 following transplantation. No significant changes in renal RI were identified during the study. Renal size increased significantly, peaking at 63% above baseline on day 7, and stayed elevated at 50% above baseline on day 13. There was no evidence of rejection or other abnormalities found on histologic evaluation of the transplanted kidneys. It was concluded that the RI of normal feline renal autografts does not significantly change in the immediate post-operative period. However, significant renal enlargement, likely due to a combination of post-operative edema and hypertrophy, does occur. This study provides baseline information for comparison with feline allografts in the immediate post-transplant period.  相似文献

We quantified gallbladder volume in 30 clinically healthy, fasted, cats, using an ellipsoid formula. All cats had a complete blood count and serum chemistry profile performed. Fasting times before sonography ranged from 12 to 16 h. The median gallbladder volume was 2.42 ml, with a range of 0.84–4.50 ml. The mean gallbladder volume was 2.41 ml. This reference range will assist clinicians when evaluating cats with hepatobiliary disease or suspected extrahepatic biliary obstruction.  相似文献

Echoes are frequently seen in the urinary bladder of cats during abdominal ultrasound. These have been attributed to hematuria, pyuria, crystalluria, and lipid. However, sonographic findings have not been previously correlated with urinalysis. We prospectively evaluated 40 clinically normal cats via ultrasound, serum chemistry, and urinalysis. Thin layer chromatography was performed on the urine to determine the amount (mg) of lipid subfractions including diacylglycerol, triglyceride, phospholipid, free fatty acid, cholesterol, and cholesterol ester. Ninety percent (36/40) of the cats in our population had sonographic echoes suspended in the urinary bladder, with most having a subjective score of mild echoes (n = 20). None of the sonographic echoes were gravity dependent or caused distal acoustic shadowing, reverberation, or twinkle artifact. Of the cats with sonographic echoes in the urine, 66% (24/36) had no significant findings on urinalysis other than the presence of lipid. The total amount of subjective sonographic echoes was not significantly related to the total amount of fat measured on thin layer chromatography or the number of lipid droplets seen on urinalysis. An increased amount of urine diacylglycerol was significantly associated with clumping of echoes (P = 0.02) and the amount of lipid droplets seen on urinalysis (P = 0.04). An association between increased amounts of urine diacylglycerol and the amount of echoes seen on ultrasound approached significance (P = 0.05). Findings from this study support previously published theories that sonographic echoes within the urinary bladder of clinically normal cats may be due to urine lipid.  相似文献

Radiographs of 50 cats with no history of gastrointestinal disease were evaluated to establish a normal reference range for radiographic diameter of the feline colon. Thirteen cats with constipation and 26 with megacolon were also evaluated and compared with the normal cats to characterize the accuracy of the reference range and to identify a cutoff to distinguish constipation from megacolon. A ratio of maximal diameter of the colon to L5 length was the most repeatable and accurate measurement. A ratio <1.28 is a strong indicator of a normal colon (sensitivity 96%, specificity 87%). A value >1.48 is a good indicator of megacolon (sensitivity 77%, specificity 85%).  相似文献

Heart volume mensuration was evaluated on conventional radiographs from eight normal cats in different body positions using computed tomography (CT). Heart volumes were calculated from orthogonal thoracic radiographs in ventral and dorsal recumbency and from radiographs exposed with a vertical X-ray beam in dorsal and lateral recumbency using the formula for an ellipsoid body. Heart volumes were also estimated with CT in ventral, dorsal, right lateral and left lateral recumbency. No differences between heart volumes from CT in ventral recumbency and those from CT in right and left lateral recumbency were seen. In dorsal recumbency, however, significantly lower heart volumes were obtained. Heart volumes from CT in ventral recumbency were similar to those from radiographs in ventral and dorsal recumbency and dorsal/left lateral recumbency. Close correlation was also demonstrated between heart volumes from radiographs in dorsal/ left lateral recumbency and body weights of the eight cats.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to develop a protocol for diuretic renal scintigraphy (renography) in cats and describe normal findings. 99mTc‐DTPA renal scintigraphy was performed twice in 10 healthy cats. Furosemide or saline were injected 4.5 min after radiopharmaceutical administration for the diuretic or control scan, respectively. A dynamic acquisition was performed for 8 min. The following parameters were evaluated: (1) global and individual glomerular filtration rate (GFR); (2) shape of the time–activity curve (TAC); (3) time of peak (TOP); (4) individual kidney excretion half‐time (T1/2) of the radiopharmaceutical; (5) percentage of maximum activity measured at the end of the study. Global GFR in the control studies (2.79±0.83 ml/min/kg, mean±SD) did not differ significantly from the diuretic scans (2.34±0.51 ml/min/kg). The shape of most (16/20) TAC of diuretic renograms was similar to those of control renograms. The TOP of the diuretic renogram curves was 3.06±0.58 min, and did not differ from that of the control scans (3.01±0.61 min). T1/2 of the diuretic renograms was significantly shorter (5.15±0.83 min) than that of the control renograms (6.31±1.50 min). A significantly lower percentage of maximum activity was present at the end of the study in diuretic renograms (median: 47.25%; range: 33.60–59.60%) compared with control renograms (63.40%; 30.00–69.40%). Diuretic renal scintigraphy is a noninvasive and fast procedure to perform in cats. The applicability of this technique needs to be investigated in patients with significantly impaired renal function and obstructive uropathies.  相似文献

Quantitative hepatobiliary scintigraphy using 99mTc-mebrofenin was performed on eight normal cats and on the same cats after induction of experimental cholangiohepatitis by infection with the liver fluke Platynosomum concinnum. Hepatobiliary scintigraphy was performed 3 times at 10 weeks, 4 months and 6 months after infection. In addition, routine biochemical tests, hepatic ultrasound and ultrasound guided hepatic biopsy samples were obtained at the same time points, and the results compared with hepatobiliary scintigraphy. The normal hepatic extraction fraction was determined to be 85%, and the normal hepatic excretion half time (T 1/2) was 14 minutes. There was no significant change in scintigraphic parameters compared to pre-infection values at any time following infection with the liver fluke. No correlation between scintigraphic parameters and histologic scores was found; however, significant correlation was identified between parasite burden and histologic scores 6 months following infection. Despite the presence of severe multifocal histologic abnormalities, minimal clinical, biochemical and scintigraphic derangements were identified using this model of cholangiohepatitis. Based on this study, hepatobiliary scintigraphy appears to be an insensitive test for structural hepatobiliary abnormalities. The role of hepatobiliary scintigraphy in functional hepatobiliary abnormalities of the feline liver has not been determined.  相似文献

The non-ionic, iodinated contrast medium, iohexol (240 mg I/ml) was evaluated as a gastrointestinal (GI) contrast medium in cats. Iohexol, both undiluted and diluted with tap water, was administered via a percutaneous endoscopically-placed gastrotomy (PEG) tube to 4 mature clinically normal cats. The dilution of contrast medium administered was 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3, and doses were 10 ml/kg and 5 ml/kg body weight. All combinations of dilution and dose of iohexol provided adequate visualization of the contrast medium column within the GI tract, and results were not significantly different than those observed using 30% w/v barium sulfate. Dehydration and diarrhea were not observed after contrast medium administration, but vomiting occurred within 15–30 minutes after administration of undiluted iohexol in all experimental cats. Renal opacification did not occur on exposures made through a 2 hour period, and dilution in transit was not apparent.  相似文献

The biliary opacification characteristics and toxicity of meglumine iotroxate (Biliscopin) were studied in twenty-three normal cats. Intravenous administraion of 72 mg/kg of Biliscorpin resulted in opacification of the gallbladder and bile duct 20 minutes after administration. Licking and vomiting appeared in ten of twelve cats immediately after administration. These side-effects were abolished by administration of an anti-histaminic agent. Slight elevation in ALT or AST was detected 24 hours after administration of Biliscopin. These findings suggest that Biliscopin can be used safely in the cat.  相似文献

THE SCINTIGRAPHIC EVALUATION OF SOLID PHASE GASTRIC EMPTYING IN NORMAL CATS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The gastric emptying half-time of solid food in normal cats was determined using a scintigraphic technique. 99mTc-sulfur colloid was applied to dry food. Sequential images were acquired post prandial, and the gastric emptying half-time was determined for several different acquisition and processing parameters. Good correlation was found between different acquisition and processing methods, some of which made use of edge detection applications, while others used different views, or number of views from which the gastric emptying half-time was calculated. The mean ± standard deviation, (range) and median of the gastric emptying half-time determined using the geometric mean of total counts in hand-drawn regions of interest from the lateral and ventral images were 2.47 × 0.71, (1.42–3.61) and 2.37 hours respectably.  相似文献

Administration of iodinated contrast medium interferes with iodide uptake in the human thyroid gland and compromises diagnostic thyroid scintigraphy and radioiodine treatment for 4–6 weeks. However, the degree and duration of inhibition of thyroid uptake of pertechnetate (99mTcO4?) by iodinated contrast medium has not been established in any species. The main objective of this study was to better understand the temporal characteristics and magnitude of inhibition of feline thyroid uptake of 99mTcO4? due to iohexol administration. Routine thyroid scintigraphy was performed in eight cats by intravenous (IV) injection of 185 MBq (5 mCi) of 99mTcO4? both 4 days before and 0,1, 3, 7,14, and 28 days after IV administration of 880 mg I/kg iohexol (240 mg I/ml). Thyroid scintigraphy data were used to calculate thyroid:salivary gland ratios (T:S) and the percentage of total injected 99mTcO4? dose uptake within the thyroid (%TU) at 20 min postinjection. After iohexol administration, mean T:S was significantly decreased below baseline only on day 1. At no point during the study did any cat have a T:S that fell below the published normal reference range of 0.71±0.14. There was a significant decrease in %TU on day 1, 3, and 14; however, at no point during the study, did any cat have a %TU that fell below the published normal reference ranges of 0.64±0.57, 0.68±0.9, or 0.75±1.38.  相似文献

Many hyperthyroid cats referred for thyroid imaging and 131I therapy are concurrently or recently receiving antithyroid medications. The effect of the antithyroid drug, methimazole, on thyroid uptake of 99mTcO4 and 123I was evaluated in 8 normal cats. Quantitative analysis was used to determine the normal percent dose uptake of 99mTcO4 and 123I, the change in thyroid:salivary ratios (T:S) of 99-TcO4 over time, and the duration of the methimazole effect on thyroid uptake of 123I. Methimazole was administered to 5 cats for 3 weeks in which a hypothyroid state was obtained; 3 cats served as non-treatment controls. 99mTcO4 and 8 and 24 hour 123I imaging was repeated after 3 weeks of methimazole therapy (time of maximum T4 suppression). Methimazole was then discontinued and 123I images and serum T4 concentrations were repeated at 1, 4, 9, 15, and 24 days post withdrawal. The percent dose uptake of 99mTcO4 increased throughout the acquisition period with maximum uptake occurring 4 hour post injection. The baseline 20 min. T:S ratio for controls and treatment cats were 0.79 +/- 0.08 and 0.81 +/- 0.05 respectively; with a peak value of 1.29 +/- 0.23 and 1.31 +/- 0.18 at 4 hours. The baseline T:S ratios were not significantly different from 20 minutes to 2 hours, however they were significantly elevated at 4 hours post injection. Baseline, 8 and 24 hour percent dose uptake of 123I were 2.1 +/- 0.42% and 7.04 +/- 1.24%, respectively. There was a significant increase in the T:S ratio in the treatment group at all time points. The 8 hour percent dose uptake of 123I at 1, 4, and 9 days post methimazole withdrawal were significantly increased and peaked at 4 days. The 24 hour uptake was significantly increased at 4 and 9 days, with peak uptake at 9 days post-methimazole withdrawal. The 123I percent dose uptake decreased to baseline values by day 15 post withdrawal. Radioiodine uptake is not inhibited by methimazole treatment in normal cats, and is significantly enhanced after recent withdrawal. This finding is supportive of a "short term rebund effect" with maximal enhanced uptake between 4 and 9 days after discontinuing antithyroid drugs. The increased uptake of 99mTcO4 may also affect the interpretation of 99mTcO4 thyroid scintigraphy for 2-3 weeks.  相似文献

This study reports data obtained from per-rectal 99mTc-pertechnetate portal scintigraphy in normal cats. It examines the effects of chemical restraint and the methods employed in defining regions of interest (ROIs) on the shunt index derived from this data. Six normal cats were used for the study; all six were chemically restrained for imaging using propofol and later four of them were manually restrained for comparison. Portal blood flow was studied and the mean shunt index was found to be 5.9%± 3.9 when ROIs were operator defined and 9.2%± 4.4 when ROIs were defined using an isocontour program. In cats that were restrained using propofol and operator defined ROIs, the mean value for the time between detection of radioactivity in the liver and in the heart was 14 ± 1 seconds.  相似文献

Intravenous diazepam has been advocated as an appetite stimulant in anorexic cats. Diazepam has also been used to stimulate the intake of radiographic contrast medium-food mixture to determine the gastric emptying time of a solid meal. Diazepam has been suspected to delay gastric emptying in cats. One study found diazepam combined with Valium to have little effect on gastric transit times in cats while diazepam alone accelerates gastric emptying in humans. The purpose of this study was to determine if diazepam influences gastric emptying times in normal cats. The gastric emptying half-time of solid food in normal, non-diazepam treated cats has been previously determined using a scintigraphic technique using 99mTc-sulfur colloid to radiolabel solid dry food. The median gastric emptying half-time was 2.3 hours and the mean meal size was 16.1 grams. Gastric emptying half-times were determined in this study using diazepam as an appetite stimulant. The median gastric emptying half-times of diazepam tratment groups given both a 16.1 gram meal and a large meal were both significantly longer than the normal non-treated group (P c 0.05). Solid phase gastric emptying is therefore significantly delayed when diazepam is used as an appetite stimulant, irrespective of the volume of the meal.  相似文献

Portal hypertension resulting in ascites and portosystemic shunts leading to hepatoencephalopathy are major clinical manifestations of hepatic circulatory disease. Diffuse liver disease impairing sinusoidal blood flow can induce portal hypertension, portosystemic shunts, or both. The liver may also be involved secondarily in posthepatic hypertension and become the site of ascitic fluid formation. Portosystemic shunts may or may not be associated with portal hypertension. Selective catheterization of the hepatic and portal veins permits one to record pressures and to outline gross and subgross vascular anomalies by injecting contrast medium. Sequential pressure recordings in the caudal vena cava, in a free and wedged hepatic vein position, in the splenic pulp, and directly in the portal vein are the bases for the differentiation of prehepatic, liver-induced, and posthepatic portal hypertension. In addition to localizing the disease process along the postcaval-portal vein axis, pressure measurements are a reliable basis for the prognosis and selection of the most appropriate therapy. In dogs with portacaval shunts, wedge hepatic vein pressure recordings assist in the detection of hepatic sinusoidal anomalies that limit blood flow and preclude surgical ablation of the shunts. The various technics and their suitability for direct and indirect portal vein pressure recording are described and evaluated. Normal portal vein pressure values in 11 dogs and two cats, using different technics, are provided. The clinical usefulness of the various technics of pressure recording and angiography was illustrated in ten dogs with ascites, hepatoencephalopathy, or both.  相似文献

A large amount of overlap exists in the B‐mode ultrasound appearance of normal and abnormal liver, spleen, and kidney tissues in cats. Therefore, invasive tissue sampling procedures remain the standard method for diagnosing diseases in these organs. The purpose of our study was to assess the feasibility of ultrasound elastography as a technique for improving noninvasive characterization of the feline liver, spleen, and kidneys. Elastography was performed on 10 unsedated, clinically healthy cats. Numeric (strain) values (0 = softest to 255 = firmest) assigned to color pixels within regions of interest resulted in median scores (interquartile ranges) of body wall, 207.50 (189.75–224.00); liver, 119.00 (105.00–138.25); spleen, 127.50 (121–00–142.00); right renal cortex, 83.50 (64.00–130.00); right renal near field, 125.50 (110.75–139.75); left renal cortex, 77.50 (52.00–116.25); and left renal near field, 126.00 (114.00–145.25). Strain values were not different between organs. Body wall median was the only significantly different value (P < 0.05). Strain ratio values of body wall:organ were as follows: liver, 1.76 (1.38–2.00); spleen, 1.68 (1.47–1.83); right renal cortex, 2.31 (1.61–3.15); right renal near field, 1.62 (1.41–2.01); left renal cortex, 2.66 (1.45–4.13); and left renal near field, 1.51 (1.29–1.89). Subjectively, hepatic and splenic parenchymal tissues were homogeneous in compressibility and similar in elasticity to one another. Renal cortical tissue was softer compared to medullary tissue. Findings indicated that ultrasound elastography is a feasible technique for objectively and subjectively characterizing the feline liver, spleen, and kidneys. Further research is needed in cats with confirmed diseases of these organs, to compare the diagnostic sensitivity of ultrasound elastography vs. B‐mode ultrasonography.  相似文献

Quantitative thyroid scintigraphy using pertechnetate was performed in 43 cats with various T4 concentrations and compared to eight normal control cats. Quantitative parameters included percentage dose uptake of the radioisotope by the thyroid, thyroid:salivary ratio and rate of thyroid uptake. All cats were anesthetized for the scan, and images were obtained using both low-energy all purpose (LEAP) and pinhole collimators. All quantitative parameters were significantly correlated to the serum T4 concentration, but the best correlation was obtained using the 20-minute thyroid:salivary ratio using only the most intense of the two thyroid lobes. The thyroid:salivary ratio was a good predictor of the metabolic status of the thyroid.  相似文献

Positron emission tomography (PET) with 2-deoxy-2-[18F]fluoro- d -glucose (18FDG) is an important imaging modality for diagnosis and staging of human neoplastic disease. The purpose of this study is to describe the normal 18FDG uptake in adult cats. Six adult healthy female cats were used. Cats were sedated and then injected intravenously with 74.0±13.0 (mean±SD) MBq of 18FDG. General anesthesia was induced and cats were placed in ventral recumbancy on the PET scanner's bed. Static images using multiple bed positions were acquired approximately 60–90 min after injection. A transmission scan was acquired at each bed position utilizing a 57Co point source to perform attenuation and scatter correction. Regions of interest (ROIs) were drawn over the liver, right and left renal cortices, left ventricular wall, and wall of ascending and descending colonic segments. Standardized uptake values (SUV) were calculated using an established formula. Kidneys and intestinal tract had relatively intense uptake of 18FDG; liver activity was intermediate; the spleen was not identified in any of the cats. Cardiac activity was variable but intense activity was noted in the left ventricular myocardium in most cats. No appreciable lung uptake was noted. Mean±SD SUV values were calculated. This study established the normal pattern of uptake of 18FDG in adult cats and provided baseline data for comparison with future studies evaluating a variety of neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases.  相似文献

Resistive index (RI) and pulsatility index (PI) are indirect measurements of blood flow resistance that may be used to evaluate vascular changes in renal and ophthalmologic diseases. To our knowledge, no reports are available describing values for renal and ocular PI index in the unsedated dog and ocular RI and PI indices in the unsedated cat. The purpose of this study was to measure normal values for both intrarenal and ocular RI and PI within the same subject in unsedated clinically normal dogs and cats. Twenty-seven dogs and 10 cats were considered healthy by means of physical examination, CBC, biochemical profile, urinalysis, and ultrasonography. Systolic blood pressure was measured by Doppler ultrasonography. Intrarenal and ocular arteries were scanned by pulsed Doppler ultrasonography to calculate RI and PI. No significant differences were noted between the values obtained for the right vs. the left kidney and eye. The upper values of these indices were calculated as mean+2 standard deviations resulting in 0.72 and 1.52 for dog renal RI and PI; 0.7 and 1.29 for cat renal RI and PI; 0.76 and 1.68 for dog ocular RI and PI; and 0.72 and 1.02 for cat ocular RI and PI.  相似文献
