Erratum

In the article "String as a theory of everything" by M. Mitchell Waldrop (Research News, 20 Sept., p. 1251), the last line of the first column was inadvertantly omitted. The affected sentence should have read, "Not only were the strong interactions far more complex than predicted by field theory, but the particles that participated in the strong interactions-the hadrons, a group that includes protons, neutrons, pi mesons, and many others-seemed to be relatively large, extended objects as much as 1 Fermi across (10(-13) centimeter)." In the next-to-the-last line of the second full paragraph in column 2 on page 1252, 10(-19) should have been 10(+19). Finally, the words "quandary" (page 1251, column 1, paragraph 6, line 2) and "quark" (page 1252, column 3, last paragraph, line 18) were misspelled.     

DDT Administered to Neonatal Rats Induces Persistent Estrus Syndrome

In the report "DDT administered to neonatal rats induces persistent estrus syndrome" by W. L. Heinrichs et al. (13 Aug., p. 642), line 4 in the last paragraph of column 1, page 643, should read " secretion of luteinizing hormone(LH)."     

Corrections and clarifications

In the table in the article "Can sustainable farming win the battle of the bottom line?" by Bob Holmes (Environment & the Economy, 25 June, p. 1893), the second and third lines in the legend should have read, "Alt. #1: conventional corn-soybean rotation with reduced tillage. Alt. #2: organic corn-beans-(wheat + clover)-clover-corn rotation with reduced tillage."     

Electrophysiological Evidence that Abnormal Early Visual Experience Can Modify the Human Brain

In the caption of the cover photograph for 25 May 1973, the word "below" is misplaced; it should be deleted from the first sentence, and the second sentence should read: "(Below) Same view taken through a cylindrical lens . . ." Two errors occurred in the report by Freeman and Thibos in the same issue, p. 876: in column 2, line 4, "Freeman and co-workers" should be changed to "Freeman et al." in column 3, line 44, "the visual resolution" should be changed to "visual resolution"-Ed.     

Errata

In the paper "The Effect of Choline-Deficiency on Uterine Activity of Rats," by Kraatz and Gruber (Science, March 25), the tenth line from the end, p. 312, ". . . choline every second" should be amended to read "...choline every second day."     

Genetic Damage Produced by Radiation

In the article "Recent Geology of Cane Wash, Monument Valley, Arizona," by Charles B. Hunt, in the issue of 30 September, page 584, a line of type was unfortunately misplaced at the last moment. The next to the last sentence in the third column should read: "Upstream from the lake beds (Fig. 2) Cane Wash is aggrading the valley floor."     

Erratum

In the report "Sequence of 16S ribosomal from Halobacterium volcanii, an archaebacterium" by R. Gupta et al. (12 August, p. 656), the last sentence of the abstract should read: "Since the H. volcanii sequence is closer to both the eubacterial and eukaryotic sequences than these two are to one another, it follows that the archaebacterial sequence is more like the common ancestral sequence than at least one of the other two versions." Also, the sentence beginning on line 6, column 3, page 658, should read: "Although the root of this tree cannot be determined, the data demand that the archaebacterial version be closer to the ancestral version common to all than are one or both of the other two versions."     

Erratum

In the report " Variable occurrence of the nrdB intron in the T-even phages suggests intron mobility" by J. Pedersen-Lane and M. Belfort (10 July, p.182), two sentences were incorrectly printed. On page 182, the sentence beginning at the bottom of the second column should have read, "The td intron is indeed homologous throughout the T-even phages, as demonstrated by hybridization and dideoxy primer-extension analysis of pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) and splice site products (11)." On page 183, in the legend to figure 2, the next-to-last sentence should have read, "Oligonucleotide probes (1 to 4) indicated by arrows are as described (21)."     

Erratum

The credit line for the photograph of polyacetylene fibers accompanying Joseph Alper's article "Conductive polymers recharged" (Research News, 13 Oct., p. 208) should have read, "Tokyo Institute of Technology."

In the article "the 0.001557806449023-Second Pulsar" by M. Mitchell Waldrop (Research News, 18 Feb., p. 831), the last sentence of the last full paragraph in the second column should have read: "Within a few weeks he was in Aricebo himself, and on 14 November he verified pulses at an astonishing 642 hertz, equivalent to a period of 1.558 milliseconds."     

agr-Naphthaflavone as an Indicator in Iodometry

In my communication "Toxicity and the Chemical Properties of Ions" in the August 19th issue of Science, the ionic field was printed as p((1/2)) (p. 194, second column, third line from bottom). It should be r((1/2)), i.e. the reciprocal of the square of the ionic radius.     

Erratum

The third sentence of the legend for Fig. 2 of the report, "Blocking by picrotoxin of peripheral inhibition in crayfish," by W. G. Van der Kloot, J. Robbins, and I. M. Cooke [Science 127, 521 (7 Mar. 1958)] should have read "The inhibitory nerve was simultaneously stimulated at a rate of 21 stimulations per second (broken line) or at 150 stimulations per second (dotted line)."     

Erratum

In the reply to the technical comments of E. H. Hall and E. A. C. Crouch by J. L. McNichols, Jr., et al. (13 June, p. 1293), the last sentence of the second paragraph was printed incorrectly. It should have read, "We maintain that f depends on the system design and is not limited by fundamental thermodynamic considerations to 1/20 [the value obtained by Hall for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) Rankine system]. However, the OTEC Rankine system does provide a baseline...."     

Correction

In Bernard D. Davis' article "Bacterial domestication: Underlying assumptions" (Policy Forum, 13 Mar., p. 1329), the word "no" was erroneously omitted from the last sentence of the first full paragraph in column two on page 1334. The sentence should have read, "But this view builds on a parallel between genetic engineering and the physical technologies, rather than on a much closer model, with very different predictions: the domestication of wild organisms, resulting in enormous benefits and no catastrophes."     

Land use law (I): congress on verge of a modest beginning

In the article by Luther J. Carter "Land use Law (I) . . ." (16 November), the last sentence in the second column on page 694 should read, "With some exceptions, little or nothing has been done by either federal or state government to cope with the ultimately more serious problem of protecting the land itself."     

Erratum

A line was inadvertantly omitted from the last sentence of George S. Mumford's letter of 20 January (p. 238). It should have read, "If, at an early stage, we could foster in this manner a feeling among our graduates of their indebtedness to the general public for directly or indirectly supporting their research and the right of that public to know the results, it might become traditional for them to proceed in such a way throughout a career."     

Corrections and clarifications

The last two sentences of the second paragraph of the report by Peter R. Buseck et al. (10 July, p. 215) should have read, "We subsequently confirmed the presence of C(60) and C(70) by mass spectrometry. They occur within fracture-filling films in shungite, an unusual carbonaceous rock found near the town of Shunga in Karelia, Russia."     

Corrections

In the report "Distribution and detection of positrons from an orbiting nuclear reactor" by E. W. Hones and P. R. Higbie (28 Apr., p. 448), the following corrections should be noted. The first sentence of the caption for figure 1 should have read, "Location of SMM (dots) and Cosmos 1176 (triangles) at the times of 21 of the most intense 511-keV gamma events recorded by SMM during the 29 April to 2 September 1980 operating period." The first sentence of the caption for figure 3 should have read, "Estimated differential energy spectrum positrons escaping from Cosmos 1176 per joule of fission energy." On page 450, the second sentence of the first full paragraph should have referred to event 5, not event 59.
