During 3 consecutive calving seasons, calving performance, placental characteristics and endocrine profiles of total 98 pregnancies of late pregnant Swedish Red and White (SRB) and Swedish Holstein (SLB) dairy heifers and cows, were investigated. Ninety-four singleton pregnancies and 4 sets of twins were recorded. In animals with singleton pregnancy, 8 stillbirths, 7 weak calves, 3 premature parturitions and 1 abortion were registered. In the SLB heifers, 19% of stillbirth (5/26) were observed, while 5% (2/42) were noted for the SRB heifers. One stillborn calf derived from the SRB cows and none was found from the SLB cows. In the heifers and cows delivering a normal living calf with unassisted parturition, the placentome thickness monitored by ultrasonography was constant towards the end of pregnancy. The numbers of foetal cotyledons varied individually between animals but in total, fewer cotyledons were found in the foetal membranes of the SRB animals than in the SLB animals (69 +/- 19) vs. (88 +/- 29) (p < 0.05). No morphological and numerical differences of the placentome thickness in animals delivering a stillborn or weak calf, compared to animals delivering a normal living calf, could be observed. In animals with unassisted parturition and without birth complications, the levels of progesterone (P4), PGF2alpha metabolite (PG-metabolite), cortisol, oestrone sulphate (E1SO4) and pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs) were not different by breeds and parities. In animals carrying stillbirth, higher levels of E1SO4 were found in 3 SRB animals and 1 SLB heifer, whereas lower levels of E1SO4 were recorded in 3 SLB heifers during the last week of pregnancy, compared to the profiles found in animals with unassisted parturition. Additionally, the levels of PAGs remained low and constant in 1 SRB cow (delivering a stillborn calf), 1 SRB heifer (giving birth prematurely), 4 animals (carrying twins) and 1 aborting SRB cow. Our results show a very high rate of stillbirth in especially SLB heifers and deviating profiles of E1SO4 and PAGs in animals with impaired parturition were recorded.  相似文献

The effects of grazing during summer and possible interaction effects between breed and management system on milk production and postpartum reproductive performance were studied in 93 Swedish Red and White (SRB), Swedish Holstein (SLB) and Swedish Jersey (SJB) cows with 214 initiated lactations. The cows were divided into two groups: zero-grazing with tiestalls, or grazing during summer. Effects were studied by mixed-model analysis. The results indicated that grazing (rather than zero-grazing) can reduce the milk yield in the following lactation in SLB cows, whereas it had little effect on the production of SRB cows. Grazing SJB cows produced more milk, but with a significantly lower fat content. Grazing before or during the postpartum period stimulated reproductive performance, indicating a higher conception rate in all breeds and a 13-27-day shorter interval from calving to conception in the SRB and SLB cows, whereas in the limited number of SJB cows, the trend was the converse.  相似文献

An epidemiologic study of retained placenta in dairy cows in Sweden covering 140 000 calvings is presented and various risk factors identified.

Swedish Friesian Breed (SLB) had a higher incidence than Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB). The incidence showed a linear increase with age, both when analysing the entire data set and when analysing the frequencies in cows negative for risk factors shown to increase the incidence of retained placenta, e.g., twinning, parturient paresis and dystocia. Male calves increased the risk. Loose-housed cows of both breeds had a lower incidence than tied zero-grazing cows, suggesting exercise to be a sparing factor. An increased recurrence risk ratio was found in second, third and fourth calvings for SRB and in second and third calvings for SLB.

SRB cows with a positive report of retained placenta had an increased risk of removal during the lactation. In dystocia and parturient paresis negative SLB cows, retained placenta increased the risk of removal, whereas a positive report of this disease in dystocia and/or parturient paresis positive cows did not further increase the risk removal.  相似文献

An epidemiologic study of 11 653 episodes of tramped teat is presented and various risk factors identified.Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) had a lower incidence than Swedish Friesian Breed (SLB). The incidence increased to reach a peak in the fifth (SRB) and fourth (SLB) parities. The incidence was highest in the month of calving and decreased throughout the lactation period. Dystocia and parturient paresis increased the risk of tramped teat in the month of calving in SRB cows. In SLB cows, parturient paresis increased the risk. Cows of both breeds with a positive history of tramped teat had an increased risk of recurrence in subsequent lactations. Loose-housed cows had a lower incidence than tied cows. A positive report of tramped teat increased the risk of removal, irrespective of mastitis status.  相似文献

Disease frequencies of Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and Swedish Friesian Breed (SLB) in tied herds with zero-grazing management system and in tied herds with pasture periods are presented. Incidences are compared both with respect to season and between the two systems. Figures are given for accidents and nine different diseases. In zero-grazing cows no seasonal difference could be demonstrated except for a higher risk of ketosis and tramped teat during wintertime for SRB.Cows of both breeds kept on pasture had lower risks of dystocia, ketosis, mastitis and tramped test during this period, but an increased risk of accidents and inflammation of the hoof(s). SRB cows also had higher risks of retained placenta, parturient paresis and non-inflammatory diseases of the hoof(s) during pasture period.Comparison of year-round incidence in the two management systems revealed a higher risk of retained placenta in zero-grazing cows of both breeds and higher risk or parturient paresis in zero-grazing SRB cows. The risk of accidents was decreased in zero-grazing cows of both breeds. The relative risks of tramped teat, mastitis and diseases of the hoof(s) varied depending on the herd size distribution of the control group. Increased risk of mastitis in zero-grazing cows of both breeds and of tramped teat in zero-grazing SLB cows was found when comparing with cows from a group of mainly smaller herds with pasture feeding during summer. However, comparison with cows from a group of herds with the same herd size distribution as zero-grazing cows revealed decreased risk of tramped teat, mastitis and inflammation of the hoof(s) in zero-grazing SRB cows and decreased risk of diseases of the hoof(s) in zero-grazing SLB cows.  相似文献

The changes in the plasma levels of oestrone sulphate and oestradiol-17β during the oestrous cycle, gestation and puerperium in the goat are described. The oestrone sulphate concentrations remained fairly constant (250–350 pg/ml) throughout the oestrous cycle until day 20 when a sharp increase of the oestrone sulphate plasma levels occurred in pregnant goats which became significantly different at day 38 of gestation from nonpregnant values. Oestradiol-17β plasma levels were significantly lower at days 17–20 in pregnant than in nonpregnant does. Oestrone sulphate and oestradiol-17β concentrations rose until the 12th week of gestation and then declined to about 50% of the former ranges of concentrations before rising again to high values at weeks 17–20 of gestation. Increasing plasma levels of oestrone sulphate and oestradiol-17β were determined during the last ten days preceding parturition. The concentrations of oestrone sulphate returned to basal levels by the 2nd—4th day post partum whereas oestradiol-17β values reached base values 24 hours after parturition. Both oestrogen concentrations remained constant during the puerperium until day 51 post partum .  相似文献

An epidemiologic study of dystocia incidence in Swedish dairy cows, covering approximately 140 000 calvings, is presented. Various risk factors were identified. The Swedish Friesian Breed (SLB) had a higher incidence than the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB), and first calving number had a higher incidence than subsequent calving numbers. SLB heifers younger than 28 months when calving had a higher risk of dystocia than older heifers. SRB heifers younger than 26 months when calving had a higher risk than older heifers. An association between parturient paresis and dystocia was demonstrated. Male calves and twinning increased the risk. A reduced risk during pasture as opposed to housing for cows from tied herds was found, but no difference between incidence for cows in tied herds and cows in loose housing could be demonstrated. Previous history of dystocia increased the risk of recurrence in subsequent calvings and also the risk of being removed during lactation.  相似文献

Parturition was induced in 12 dairy heifers with prostaglandin (PG) F2 alpha about 2 weeks before the expected time of calving. Eight animals gave birth after two injections (group 1), three animals needed more than two injections (group 2) and one animal (cow no. 740) required one injection. All animals in groups 1 and 2 had retained foetal membranes and the time needed to induce parturition was 59 +/- 7 and 149 +/- 10 h, respectively. As cow no. 740 did not have retained foetal membranes and calved 24 h after one PGF2 alpha injection, it was excluded from the results. Udder distension and relaxation of the pelvic ligaments could predict the calving to within 12 h. Furthermore, the pre-calving drop of body temperature could predict the time of parturition to within 16 h. The total white blood cells and polymorphonuclear cells were at their highest values on the day preceding parturition whereas mononuclear cells had a tendency to increase 3 days after calving. Increased levels of haemoglobin were found at the time of parturition, whereas, plasma-calcium levels significantly decreased after parturition (P < 0.001). Progesterone levels markedly decreased after the first PGF2 alpha injection and reached 2 nmol/l at the time of parturition. Plasma levels of oestradiol-17 beta reached the peak at the time of parturition, whereas, the highest levels of the PGF2 alpha metabolite and cortisol were recorded 16 h after calving.  相似文献

An epidemiologic study of mastisis in dairy cows in Sweden covering 137 002 calvings and subsequent lactations is presented and various risk factors identified.

Swedish Friesian breed (SLB) had a higher incidence of mastisis than Swedish Red and White breed (SRB). The incidence was higher during the first part of lactation and increased with parity until the seventh lactation in SRB and the sixth lactation in SLB.

Dystocia, retained placenta and parturient paresis increased the risk of mastisis during the first part of lactation in SRB, and retained placenta increased the risk of mastitis during the first part of lactation in SLB. No associations between these periparturient disorders and the occurrence of mastitis in the latter part of lactation could be found. The incidence of mastitis was increased among teat-tramp-positive cows, and a positive report of mastitis increased the risk of mastitis in subsequent calvings.

The influence of environmental factors on the occurrence of mastitis was demonstrated by a higher incidence during housing as opposed to pasture, and a decreased incidence in loose-housed cows when compared to tied zero-grazing cows during the later part of lactation. During the first part of lactation, no seasonal variation could be found, and loose-housed cows had only slightly decreased incidence during this part of lactation when compared to tied zero-grazing cows.

The removal rate was increased in the mastitis-positive cow population.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to characterise the peripheral plasma oestrone (E1) and oestradiol-17beta (E2) concentrations throughout gestation in the cow and to correlate this with the stage of gestation and fetal number. Cows (n = 10) were equally divided into two groups after non-surgical embryo transfer of in-vitro matured and in-vitro fertilised (IVM - IVF) embryos; Group 1 received a single embryo, Group 2 received twin embryos. Blood was collected about every third day from day 0 (day 0 was defined as first day of standing oestrus), then daily for the last 10 days of gestation and sampling was stopped one day post partum. Plasma E1 concentration exceeded that of E2 throughout gestation in both groups of cows. The time trend concentrations of plasma E1 were significantly affected by the stage of gestation (P < 0.01) and fetal number (P < 0.01) in the last two trimesters of gestation. The time trend concentrations of plasma E2 were significantly affected by the stage of gestation (P<0.01) but not foetal number (P = 0.09). In both groups there was marked preparturient increase in E1 and E2 concentrations. Plasma E2 profile between days 10 prepartum to parturition paralleled E1 in cows carrying a single foetus but was disparate during the same period in the twin-bearing cows.To conclude, our results indicate that although plasma E1 concentration was greater than E2 throughout gestation, both were related to the stage of gestation and that fetal number was correlated with circulating E1 levels in the last two trimesters of gestation.  相似文献

An epidemiologic study of ketosis in dairy cows in Sweden covering approximately 125 000 calvings in 1268 herds is presented and various risk factors identified. The Swedish Red and White breed (SRB) had a higher incidence of ketosis than the Swedish Friesian breed (SLB). A positive report of parturient paresis, alone or in combination with a positive report of retained placenta increased the risk of ketosis in SRB cows. Simultaneous reports of parturient paresis and retained placenta increased the risk of ketosis in SLB cows. Tied cows of both breeds with pasture had a decreased risk during the months of pasture. The incidence of ketosis decreased with herd size, and tied zero-grazing cows had a higher incidence than loose-housed cows.Cows reported positive once for ketosis had an increased risk in subsequent calvings but no increased risk of removal during lactation.  相似文献

The interaction of the effects of pregnancy status and veterinary-treated clinical mastitis on culling in Swedish dairy cattle was analyzed with survival analysis. The data were from 978,780 cows with first calvings between 1988 and 1996. Four breeds (Swedish Red and White (SRB), Swedish Friesian (SLB), Swedish Polled Breed and Jersey) were included in the analysis, together with the SRB x SLB crossbreds. Length of productive life was defined as the number of days between first calving and culling or censoring (end of data collection). The model (Weibull proportional hazard) included the interaction of parity by pregnancy status by veterinary-treated clinical mastitis, peak test-day milk-yield deviation within herd-year-parity, age at first calving, year by season, region, breed, herd production level, and the random effect of herd. The effects of pregnancy status and veterinary-treated clinical mastitis were modeled as time-dependent covariates. The lactation was divided into five stages during which a veterinary-treated clinical mastitis and culling might occur and in which the pregnancy status was assumed to be known and culling could occur. Open cows had a pronounced effect on culling: they had a very high risk of being culled in all lactations, and it was even higher if they were treated for mastitis in early lactation. For pregnant cows, the later they got pregnant during the lactation, the greater their risk to be culled. The risk associated with cases of veterinary-treated clinical mastitis remained important throughout the lactation.  相似文献

Blood levels of calcitonin (CT), calcium (Ca), inorg. phosphate (P) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in 27 bulls of Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) and 21 Swedish Friesian Breed (SLB) were studied. There was a significant lowering of Ca, P, ALP and CT with increasing age. The fact that the osteopetrotic syndrome is increasing with age in bulls and that the CT level in blood is decreasing with age does not support the idea that an increased CT discharge could be responsible for the osteopetrotic syndrome in bulls.  相似文献

Oestrone sulphate concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay in milk samples obtained weekly during pregnancy from Jersey and Friesian cows, with each breed grazed at two different stocking rates. Mean milk yields differed significantly (P<0.05) between the four herds, while mean percentage milk fat and protein values differed significantly (P<0.05) between the two breeds. In all four herds, oestrone sulphate concentrations in milk rose progressively during pregnancy from a mean value of approximately 80-100 pg/ml at 60-80 days of pregnancy to a plateau value of approximately 1 ng/ml at 181-200 days. In non-pregnant cows, oestrone sulphate concentrations in milk ranged from non-detectable to 110 pg/ml, with a mean +/- s.e.m. value of 59 +/- 4 pg/ml. There was considerable variation in milk oestrone sulphate concentrations between cows in each herd, and oestrone sulphate concentrations could also fluctuate markedly within cows from week to week. Despite this variation, the concentration of oestrone sulphate in 98% of milk samples obtained after 120 days of pregnancy was greater than the highest concentration found in milk from non-pregnant cows. Measurement of oestrone sulphate concentrations in milk samples taken at least 120 days after mating or insemination may provide an alternative, non-invasive means of determining or confirming pregnancy in New Zealand dairy cows.  相似文献

Abstract

The milk composition in a Swedish herd, consisting of Swedish Red and White cows (SRB) and Swedish Holstein cows (SLB), and in a Danish herd, consisting of Danish Holstein-Friesian cows (SDM), was evaluated. Concentrations of the major milk proteins (κ-casein, αS1-casein, β-casein, β-lactoglobulin A, β-lactoglobulin B and α-lactalbumin) of 134 individual milk samples were determined by reversed phase (RP) HPLC. Other parameters determined included milk fat, urea, lactose, calcium, lactoferrin, somatic cell count and protein degradation (determined as level of free amino-terminals). Analysis of variance was used to compare concentrations of analysed milk variables between SRB and SLB or between SLB and SDM. Concentration of total protein, total casein, β-casein and κ-casein were significantly higher in SRB milk compared with SLB milk. Concentration of α-lactalbumin and calcium were significantly higher in SDM milk than in SLB milk. The concentration of urea was higher in SLB than in SDM milk and is suggested to reflect differences in feeding regimes between the investigated Swedish and Danish herd.  相似文献

The effects of calving intervals of 12 and 15 months on milk yield and milk composition were studied in 105 Swedish Red and White (SRB) and 46 Swedish Holstein (SLB) cows with 280 initiated lactations and 165 completed lactations (followed by another calving). The cows were divided into two groups, one early inseminated and the other late inseminated. The cows in the early group were inseminated at first oestrus 50 days after calving, aiming at a conventional 12-month calving interval, and the second group 140 days after calving, aiming at an extended calving interval of 15 months. Effects were studied by mixed-model analysis. Compared with the 12-month groups, total milk yield increased by 15-16% in the extended calving interval groups of both breeds, while fat, protein and lactose contents were slightly lower. The duration of lactation was 55-60 days longer in the 15-month than in the 12-month groups of both breeds. Given the possibility of a longer lactation, primiparous cows generally maintained their production longer than multiparous cows. SLB cows, especially those with a high peak yield, maintained their production longer than SRB cows. Average milk production per day within a calving interval tended to be slightly lower (2-5%) in both breeds when the interval was extended, owing to longer periods with low production and longer dry periods.  相似文献

During late bovine pregnancy, several hormones are involved to maintain and develop a successful result with a live calf. These hormones are e.g., progesterone, high levels during the whole pregnancy period, originating from the corpus luteum, maternal adrenals and placenta. Oestrone sulphate, oestrone in its conjugated form, shows elevated levels from about mid-pregnancy until the third stage of parturition (expelling of the fetal membranes). For the onset of normal parturition and the parturition process as such, a change from progesterone to oestrone synthesis is crucial. The increasing levels of oestrone are time-related to an increased synthesis of prostaglandin F(2alpha) (reflected as elevated levels of 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2alpha)) causing prepartal luteolysis and several hormones are then involved in the labour process such as prostaglandin F(2alpha), cortisol and oxytocin. Cortisol might also be an indicator of stressful events for the dam. Levels of pregnancy associated glycoproteins (PAGs), originating from the trophoblastic binucleate cells, are increasing during the last 10 days prior to parturition. All the mentioned hormones have certain functions during pregnancy, more or less understood. However, could deviations from the expected profiles during late bovine pregnancy indicate impaired fetal well-being or be of importance for reproductive performance during the postpartum period? Abortions, stillbirths or dystocia are situations where endocrine profiles might predict the status of the calf. There are two possible approaches to study the endocrine changes in late pregnancy-to follow spontaneous cases of normal or impaired pregnancies or to experimentally disturb the gestation or induce parturition. We have in one study followed pregnant animals to depict reproductive disturbances, both animals with expected normal parturitions and animals where the sire of the calf has given rise to a high incidence of stillborn calves. The number of stillborn calves or dystocia has been small and so far it has not been possible to obtain a clear picture of the usefulness of endocrine parameters to follow fetal well being, but some of the hormonal parameters show a deviating profile. In a small group of animals with induced parturition (PGF(2alpha)), two out of three had parturition problems and one of these animals had a stillborn calf. All three animals had retained fetal membranes. It was possible to demonstrate a deviating endocrine profile in the cow having the stillborn calf in the sense of higher levels of progesterone, cortisol and 15-ketodihydro-PGF(2alpha) at the time of parturition. In both animals with dystocia the levels of oestrone sulphate after parturition were more sustained. Increasing and high levels of PAGs were only demonstrated in the animal with a normal parturition. These studies are ongoing, aiming at finding changes in endocrine profiles related to impaired pregnancies.  相似文献

Blood plasma concentrations of estrone and progesterone, calcium and inorganic phosphorus were measured in 22 cows (Swedish Red and White Breed) from 4 weeks prepartum up to 6 days post partum. Ten cows with parturient paresis had Ca levels below 6 mg/100 ml. Data from plasma analyses in individual cows were grouped in the following periods: 28–22, 21–15, 14–8, 7–6, 5–4, 3, 2, 1 day(s) before parturition and 1, 2, 3–6 days after parturition. Statistical comparisons of the levels of the hormones and the ratio progesterone/estrone did not reveal any significant differences between the paretic and normal cows at any time period. The results do not support the theories that high systemic levels of estrogens or an imbalance between estrogen and progesterone predispose towards parturient paresis.  相似文献

Three cows of the Swedish Red and White Breed (SRB) were used in the experiment. Cow no. 1 pregnant for 247 days, was given 20 mg dexamethasone twice with an interval of 48 hrs. Cows nos. 2 and 3, each pregnant for 254 days, received 20 mg of dexamethasone twice with an interval of 24 hrs. The cows delivered normal living calves 153, 138 and 137 hrs., respectively, after the second injection of dexamethasone. Blood samples were drawn from the jugular vein every third hour during the experimental period and the samples were analyzed for estrone, progesterone and 15-keto-13,14-dihydroprostaglandin F2α. Following the dexamethasone injections there was a continuous increase in the blood plasma levels of estrone followed by a sharp decrease in conjunction with parturition. The blood plasma level of progesterone showed a slow but continuous decrease until about 24 hrs. before delivery when a marked drop occurred. The levels of the prostaglandin metabolite increased gradually until about 24 hrs. prior to delivery. This was followed by an abrupt rise, and high levels of the prostaglandin metabolite were recorded for up to four days following parturition. It is concluded that the estrone increase preceded that of the prostaglandin metabolite and that the final drop in the progesterone was synchronous with the final rise of the prostaglandin metabolite level.  相似文献

A radioimmunoassay developed for the measurement of oestrone sulphate in bovine serum was used to determine levels of hormone in cows. The cows were sampled as part of an embryo transfer programme designed to investigate the production of twin calves. The concentration of oestrone sulphate in serum was higher in cows carrying twin calves, but the difference did not become significant until around 220 days' gestation. The predictive value of the test could be used as a guide to increase feeding of cows pregnant with more than one calf.  相似文献
