1. Two‐week‐old male turkeys were subjected, for 13 weeks, to four lighting treatments, 23 h/d, 14 h/d, 8 h/d, and a “step‐down” pattern in which light was reduced from 22 h/d by 1 h a week to 14 h/d.

2. Within each lighting treatment half the groups were offered food ad libitum and half received restricted amounts of food which were similar for all lighting treatments.

3. There were no statistically significant differences in final body weights or food conversion ratios between photoperiod treatments, although within groups fed ad libitum food conversion ratio was slightly superior for turkeys which had received 23 h light/d throughout.  相似文献

1. Two hundred and sixty four dwarf broiler breeder hens were subjected to ad libitum or restricted feeding and to four lighting patterns: 15L (bright light):9D (dark), 15L:9d (dim light), 2L:10d: 1L:11d, (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

2. Breeder hens fed ad libitum and subjected to either conventional or intermittent lighting ingested respectively, 25 g and 14 to 17 g more than hens restricted to 115 g/d.

3. Body weight was greater in hens fed ad libitum irrespective of the lighting pattern and of the amount of food intake.

4. Persistency of egg production was impaired by intermittent lighting.

5. Ad libitum feeding reduced egg fertility. The decrease was larger in breeder hens on intermittent lighting.

6. Hatchability was increased in hens submitted to the symmetrical lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d).

7. Egg and chick weights were higher in hens fed ad libitum.

8. Shell index and shell breaking strength increased in restricted hens on the intermittent lighting pattern (0.5L:3.5d) × 6.

9. The best performance was obtained in restricted hens on the conventional lighting pattern.  相似文献

1. A food restriction study in conjunction with light control was conducted with commercial broiler chicks in a tropical environment.

2. Chicks on treatments 1 and 2 were fed continuously while those on treatments 3 and 4 were fed during the day (from 06.00 h to 18.00 h) and night (from 18.00 h to 06.00 h) respectively. Chicks on treatment 1 received only natural light during the day, while those on treatments 2, 3 and 4 received supplementary lighting during the night in addition to natural light during the day.

3. Food consumption by birds on treatment 2 was significantly higher at 56 days of age, followed by birds on treatments 1, 4 and 3.

4. The pattern of body weight gains was similar to the order of food consumption.

5. Efficiency of food utilisation was poorest for birds on treatment 2.

6. Mortality rates were not influenced significantly by the feeding regimen and lighting pattern.

7. Dressing percentage and proportion of abdominal fat were greatest for birds on treatment 2.  相似文献

1. Turkey poults (1620) were used to compare the effects of three lighting programmes on heavy strain males reared to 188 d: constant light (24L:0D, CON); increasing light (6L:18D at 7 d gradually increasing to 20L:4D by 63 d, INC); a pattern identical to INC followed by a decrease in daylength from 84 d to 10L:14D at 112 d (DID).

2. Lighting affected growth pattern but had no effect on body weight at 118 d or overall food to gain ratio.

3. Both INC and DID lighting reduced overall mortality in comparison to CON light primarily because of a reduction in the incidence of skeletal disease and spontaneous cardiomyopathy. INC and DID lighting increased the incidence of cannibalism.

4. Turkeys given INC or DID lighting had a superior ability to walk in comparison to those birds given CON light.

5. INC and DID males stood, ate and drank more frequently, and sat less often than CON turkeys during behavioural observation.

6. There were no lighting effects on carcase composition except that INC and DID birds had heavier keel bones. The ultimate force per cm2 (stress) required to break femora was greater for turkeys given INC and DID lighting (P = 0.065).

7. Plasma testosterone concentrations at 117 d were 272.5, 115.2 and 29.5 pg/ml for turkeys given CON, INC and DID lighting, respectively (P= 0.072). Testosterone concentration was not related to growth rate.  相似文献

1. Four light treatments and two rearing regimens were imposed on 4 breeds of laying hen, using 6144 birds in an 8‐room climate house.

2. Room treatments were a standard lighting pattern with intensities of 0.5, 2 and 15 lux and an intermittent pattern (3 h light: 3 h dark) at 15 lux. Within room treatments were ad libitum or rationed feeding during rearing and 4 breeds: ISA Brown, Hisex Brown, Shaver Brown and Hisex White.

3. Rationing during rearing, by holding intake at its 6‐week level from 6 to 14 weeks of age, was associated with significantly higher egg production and lower egg weight, but no effect on food intake, or egg output.

4. Intermittent lighting, using a repeated 3L:3D regimen was associated with higher egg weight, but a lower rate of lay, food intake, and total egg output.

5. The absence of a consistent response to light intensity, over the range 0.75 to 12.4 lux was in contrast with earlier work, and it is possible that modern prolific hybrids are more tolerant of low intensity than were earlier stocks.

6. Despite this result it is suggested that current recommendations of 10 to 20 lux in laying houses need not be changed, because such intensities are advisable on the grounds of welfare, staff working conditions and aesthetics.  相似文献

1. Four experiments were carried out to investigate the effects on growth, food conversion efficiency (FCE) and apparent diet digestibility, of wetting food before offering it to individually caged growing chickens.

2. Female broiler chicks (8/treatment) were given grower food ad libitum from 28–49 d of age either in the dry form or wetted with 2.0 kg water/kg air dry food, or wet food restricted to the same daily amount of dry matter as eaten by the dry‐fed birds. Ad libitum feeding of the wet food significantly increased food intake and body weight gain, compared to dry feeding, while weight gains of birds with restricted feeding of wet food were intermediate.

3. Experiments 2 and 3 studied the effects of the time interval between mixing the food with water and offering it to the birds. When pre‐soaking times of 0, 12 and 24 h were compared with dry food for male broilers (8/treatment) from 25 to 40 d all wet treatments increased body weight gains significantly, the best results coming from the zero soaking time, when DM digestibility was increased significantly from 677 to 714 g/kg. When restricted amounts of food were offered hourly for 8 h on each of 4 d, DM digestibility was significantly increased from 634 for dry food to 659 for that freshly mixed with water and 664 g/kg for that soaked for 1 h between mixing and offering.

4. In a factorial experiment with wet and dry food, either in the standard form or with added enzyme or 400 g/kg cornflour, there were significant positive effects on growth and FCE of broilers (7/treatment) attributable to enzyme and wetting, while cornflour significantly reduced growth. However, wet cornflour‐diluted food gave better growth than dry standard food. Wetting significantly increased the apparent digestibility of dry matter and protein while dilution with cornflour significantly reduced protein digestibility.

5. These results confirm those previously presented in terms of improved growth and FCE with wet feeding and demonstrate a large improvement in the proportion of the food absorbed from the digestive tract, of similar magnitude to the improvement in FCE. They also show that it is not necessary to pre‐soak food in order to attain the maximum effect.  相似文献

1. The effects of lighting pattern on production to 399 d in caged, female, meat‐strain chickens was investigated. Energy intake was controlled from 56 to 399 d.

2. Four different rearing treatments with a subsequent constant 16‐h photoperiod during laying were used.

3. A 15‐h rearing photoperiod resulted in delayed sexual maturity, increased mature body weight and decreases in both total egg numbers and the proportion of smaller eggs, compared with a 6‐h photoperiod.

4. Continuous light to 56 d, although associated with a high incidence of subsequent blindness, resulted in satisfactory egg production.

5. Abrupt reduction in the photoperiod from 15 to 6 h for the 112 to 167 d period resulted in unsatisfactory subsequent performance, especially when the day‐length was only slowly increased to 16 h during laying.

6. In the two laying treatments, in which the photoperiod was increased gradually from 6 to 16 h during the 168 to 238‐d period, a decrease in the number of smaller eggs occurred, compared with the treatments in which a single abrupt increase in photoperiod was used.  相似文献

1. The paper compares between three genetically different lines in their egg weight and shell thickness response to a 28‐h cycle.

2. The response in shell thickness to ahemeral lighting was more rapid (2.2 d) than for egg weight (4.2 d).

3. Differences between genotypes were evident in both the speed and magnitude of response.

4. Overall, egg weight and shell thickness on the 28‐h cycle were 7% and 8% greater than on 24 h.

5. The allometric increase indicates that the increase in shell weight was on average 14% more than the increase in egg weight.  相似文献

1. Intermittent lighting and feeding schedules incorporating long periods of darkness and periods without access to food were applied to growing broilers.

2. Birds exposed to a 2 h light(L): 10 h dark(D) lighting schedule with feeding restricted to the light periods ate significantly less food and grew more slowly than conventionally‐reared birds. Satisfactory growth and efficiency of food utilisation were obtained by allowing these birds access to food during the dark periods.

3. Altering the lighting schedule to 2L:6D resulted in birds with food intakes and growth rates similar to those reared conventionally, even when feeding was restricted to the light periods.

4. Releasing birds from the light and food restriction for the 2 weeks preceding slaughter resulted in greater food consumption which was not characterised by significantly better growth or food utilisation.

5. Feeding a diet of high energy or pelleting a diet of low energy during the period of restriction increased food intake and improved growth rate.

6. The response of broilers to intermittent lighting and feeding was not significantly influenced by ambient temperature within the range 16 to 35 °C or by the energy concentration of the diet fed before the introduction of the intermittent schedule.  相似文献

Two replicates of each of 4 light patterns were imposed on 4 breeds of laying hen. The light patterns were designed to induce sexual maturity, defined as 50% production, at a range of ages. Within‐room treatments were ad libitum or rationed feeding during rearing and 4 breeds, namely ISA Brown, Hisex Brown, Ross G‐Link Brown and Shaver Brown. A total of 6144 birds were used to test the 32 treatments.

2. Age at 50% production was significantly affected by both lighting treatment and rearing regimen.

3. The light pattern treatments had no significant effect on any cumulative performance variable measured from 20 to 80 weeks of age.

4. Breed had a significant effect on eggs/hen housed, rate of lay, egg weight, egg output and food intake.

5. Rationing feeding during rearing, by holding intake at its 6‐week level from 6 to 14 weeks of age, was associated with significantly lower egg production, but had no effect on egg weight or food intake during lay.

6. Although both rearing and light treatments influenced age at 50% production, this character was not correlated with egg weight or egg production.

7. It is suggested that modern hybrid laying stocks are so genetically predisposed to ovulate that they are becoming refractory towards treatments hitherto regarded as influential.  相似文献

1. Data from intermittent and conventional lighting trials were analysed to investigate the effect of daily illumination upon mortality during the laying period and in 49‐d‐old broilers.

2. Iiveability in laying hens was improved by the use of intermittent lighting: the degree of improvement was proportional to the reduction in daily illumination achieved by the intermittent programme.

3. The reduction in mortality with intermittent lighting in laying hens was not the result of intermittent lighting per se. Intermittent regimens which did not reduce daily illumination did not reduce mortality.

4. Mortality in both conventionally‐lit laying hens and 49‐d old‐broiler chickens increased with photoperiod.  相似文献

1. The influence of photoperiod and time of year on the growth of hen turkeys was investigated.

2. Photoperiod treatments consisted of computer simulations of day lengths which occur naturally in the spring and autumn of the year. Both photoperiod treatments were given to hens in the autumn and spring.

3. Data were collected for growth evaluations at 2‐ to 4‐week intervals to 16 weeks of age. No significant season × photoperiod interactions occurred.

4. The spring trial resulted in greater body weights and better food conversions (food/gain) than the autumn trial.

5. Simulated autumn daylengths resulted in greater body weights and improved food efficiency at 16 weeks of age compared with simulated spring daylengths.

6. The pattern of growth (period changes) was influenced by season, but not photoperiod.

7. Season and photoperiod both have important and independent influences on the growth of the turkey hen.  相似文献

1. Two flocks of 60 laying hens were transferred from 14 h light (L): 10 h dark (D), to repeated 3L:3Dor4L:4D lighting schedules at 37 weeks of age. Egg production decreased slightly but egg weight and shell quality improved.

2. The intake of low‐calcium diet and of oyster shell were similar for each light period of each lighting regimen.

3. Ovipositions were distributed virtually at random throughout the day and the mean interval between successive eggs within a clutch was increased.

4. Reducing the total daily photoperiod from 12 to 6 h decreased daily food consumption.  相似文献

1. Two experiments were conducted with brown‐egg laying hybrid pullets to determine the optimum age at which to begin Biomittent lighting (a system providing 15 min light and 45 min darkness in each hour for 16 h).

2. In the first experiment birds introduced to Biomittent lighting at 18, 24, 30 or 36 weeks of age all gave the same egg output. Use of Biomittent lighting between 22 and 34 weeks of age reduced food intake by 5.3% compared with normal lighting during this period.

3. In the second experiment, birds introduced to Biomittent lighting at 23 or 36 weeks of age gave essentially the same egg output and this was true even for half of the flock which had been severely restricted in food intake between 6 and 18 weeks of age.

4. It is concluded that Biomittent lighting can be safely introduced at point of lay as a means of saving food consumption without loss of output provided that an adequate diet is fed. The response is interpreted as a saving in energy expenditure rather than a restriction of feeding opportunity.

5. It is recommended that, to avoid the complication of combining weekly increments in photoperiod with intermittent lighting, Biomittent lighting can be introduced abruptly as a skeleton long day. However, if this follows rearing on short photoperiods and if egg size is important, the start should be delayed until about 22 weeks of age so as not to induce early sexual maturity.  相似文献

1. In the two experiments on restricted feeding of broilers there were no interactions between dietary nutrient concentration and access time to food on either performance or carcass characteristics.

2. In the first experiment (winter), food denial for 8 h/d improved food conversion efficiency and increased dressing percentage. Increasing nutrient concentration increased growth rate; decreased food intake; and improved conversion efficiency.

3. In the second experiment (summer), food denial for 8 h/d tended to increase growth rate and to improve conversion efficiency, but not significantly. Increasing nutrient concentration had the same effect as in experiment 1.

4. It is concluded that restricted access to food generally improves food efficiency.  相似文献

1. Growth rates and daily food intakes of small, sexed groups of broilers were compared under different photoperiodic regimes during the period from 28 to 49 d of age.

2. Reduction in the duration of illumination did not impair growth rate.

3. The sexes showed a differential response to the treatments.

4. There was evidence that the enhanced performance of females was due to an improvement in food conversion efficiency.  相似文献

1. White Leghorn chicks of 10 strains were reared, on wire, to 140 d with or without insoluble grit and then were housed in laying cages where grit and no grit treatments were superimposed on the rearing treatments.

2. During rearing the feeding of grit had no effect on the body weight or food conversion ratio but there were small treatment effects on mortality between three commercial strains.

3. During laying the grit treatments had no direct effects on food consumption, mortality, final body weights, age at first egg, egg production, Haugh units or total blood spots.

4. Egg weight and specific gravity at 450 d were affected by grit treatment but the differences were small.  相似文献

1. Three degrees of quantitative food restriction producing body weights 88, 76 or 64% of controls at 20 weeks and three times of starting restriction 3, 6 or 9 weeks of age were compared with ad libitum‐fed pullets in a factorial experiment with 1800 light‐hybrid hens. Restrictions were applied such that the target weights were produced irrespective of time of starting.

2. Food intake was least when restrictions were started at 3 weeks.

3. Sexual maturity was delayed in proportion to the severity of restriction and resulted in lower percentages of small eggs.

4. Egg numbers decreased as restriction increased.

5. Mortality in restricted groups during rearing and laying was higher.

6. Optimal restriction was apparently intermediate between treatments producing 88 or 76% of ad libitum‐fed body weight. Body weight was so excessively affected by the most severe restriction that total production was adversely affected.

7. Restriction from 3 weeks was more profitable than restriction from 6 or 9 weeks, resulting in lower food cost during rearing and higher total egg production.  相似文献

1. The effect of restricted feeding on performance and carcass characteristics of broilers was determined in three experiments.

2. In the first experiment, removal of food for 8 h/d from 42 to 56 d of age significantly improved food conversion efficiency of broilers on deep litter. Removal of food for 16 h/d or on alternate days tended to cause slower growth and also improved conversion efficiency.

3. In the second experiment, denial of food for 8 h/d did not significantly affect either growth rate or conversion efficiency of caged broilers. Denial of food on alternate days, from 28 d of age, depressed food intake and growth rate. Food restriction decreased dressing percentage regardless of the age of introduction. With 32, 40 or 48 h food denial each 72 h there was a large depression in growth rate and dressing percentage. Carcass dry matter was also less, indicating less carcass fat, when food was denied for 48 h each 72 h.

4. In the third experiment, growth rate of broilers on deep litter was significantly improved by denying food for 8 h/d from 28 d of age, and was significantly depressed by food denial on alternate days. This depression was significantly more severe if restriction started at 28 d rather than at 42 d of age. Conversion efficiency was not significantly improved by denial for 8 h/d.

5. In the last two experiments conversion efficiency was much worse in severe restriction.  相似文献

1. Diurnal—nocturnal changes in food intake, gut storage of ingesta, food transit time and heat production were studied in male broiler chickens reared under a 14L:10D lighting schedule (lights on from 06.00 to 20.00 h).

2. Food consumption during the scotophase was negligible. Peak food consumption during the photoperiod occurred at the beginning of the photoperiod and in the late afternoon.

3. During the photoperiod, the crop and proventriculus/gizzard contained only small quantities of ingesta. However, at the beginning of the scotoperiod, dried ingesta content of crop and proventriculus/gizzard increased by 10.5‐ and 2.76‐fold respectively. This increase was followed by a gradual decrease towards the end of the scotoperiod.

4. Food transit time during the scotoperiod was significantly longer than that during the photoperiod.

5. The daily pattern of heat production closely followed the 14L:10D lighting schedule. Total heat production during darkness averaged 53% of total heat production during the photoperiod.

6. It was estimated that the storage of energy (as ingesta) in the crop and proventriculus/gizzard, followed by its gradual release and the increased food transit time during the night, contributed 75.5% of nocturnal energy needs. It must be recognised that these mechanisms play a major role in the energy balance of the growing chicken during periods without food intake.  相似文献
