In the editorial "Punctuated equilibrium in scientific publishing" by Ellis Rubinstein (9 June, p. 1415), the first name of Gerard Piel was spelled incorrectly, and his year of retirement, and that of Dennis Flanagan, should have been given as 1984, not 1986.

In the special section "Minorities in science: The pipeline problem" (13 Nov., p. 1175), the graph on page 1199 showing the field distribution of employed scientists and engineers by ethnicity should have been labeled "Percentage" along the x axis. Also, the designation "Engineers" should have read, "Engineers, total." Labeled correctly, the graph would indicate, for example, that among all employed white scientists and engineers in 1988, about 50% were scientists and 50% were engineers. Of employed black scientists and engineers, about 70% were scientists and only about 30% were engineers. Among Hispanics, the breakdown was about 45% scientists and 55% engineers.

In the Random Samples item "Charting biodiversity to guide conservation" (5 Feb., p. 758), Janis Alcom should have been described as the "director of CNA ['conservation needs assessment'] at the Biodiversity Support Program, a consortium of the World Wildlife Fund, the World Resources Institute, and the Nature Conservancy."

D. G. Rainnie et al., in their report "Adenosine inhibition of mesopontine cholinergic neurons: Implications for EEG arousal" (4 Feb., p. 689), suggested that adenosine may mediate sleep-debt related potentiation of EEG slow-wave activity in non-REM sleep. This is similar to a hypothesis proposed by J. H. Benington et al. [Sleep Res. 22, 4 (1993)]. Rainnie et al. suggested that adenosine exerts this effect by means of inhibition of mesopontine cholinergic neurons rather than by direct inhibition of neurons in the cerebral cortex.

Figure 4 of the report "Selective and ATP-dependent translocation of peptides by the MHC-encoded peptide transporter" by J. J. Neefjes, F. Momburg, and G. J. Hammerling (6 Aug., p. 769) stated incorrectly that a peptide with T as the COOH-terminal residue was not efficiently translocated. Resynthesis revealed that the peptide RYWANATRST is transported by rat TAP. This does not change the general conclusion that the transporters are selective, because several other peptides are not well translocated [F. Momburg et al., Nature 367, 648 (1994)].

In Claire O'Brien's News & Comment article "Priority initiatives squeeze science"(10 Feb., p. 782), David Porteous was incorrectly described as head of the Medical Research Council's (MRC's) Human Genetics Unit. He is head of the Molecular Genetics Section of the MRC's Human Genetics Unit.

In the News article "Astronomy's optical illusion" by John Travis (21 Oct., p. 356), the name of Paul Schechter of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was given incorrectly on page 357 as Paul "Schectman."

In the article "Genetic testing set for takeoff" by Rachel Nowak (News & Comment, 22 July, p. 464), Helix was cited as the source of information for the accompanying table describing genetic testing (p. 466). The information in the table regarding mutational mechanism, cost, and market size came from sources identified by Helix who were contacted separately.

In the News article "Finding ;sustainable' ways to prevent parasitic diseases" by Rebecca Kolberg (24 June, p. 1859), mention is made of nylon gauze that is being distributed worldwide free of charge to filter Guinea worm larvae from drinking water. The cloth is donated by E. I. Dupont de Nemours & Company, Inc., and Precision Fabrics Group for distribution by Global 2000, Inc.

In the report "A three-dimensional model for the hammerhead ribozyme based on fluorescence measurements" by T. Tuschl et al. (4 Nov. 1994, p. 785), the text of lines 28 through 30 in column 3 on page 785 should have read, "... we located 5-carboxyfluorescein at (d, -29.5 degrees , L-3.75 A) and 5-carboxytetramethylrhodamine at (a, -29.5 degrees -delta, -3.75 A)." In the same report, the second line of equation 1 in the legend to figure 3 was incorrectly printed. The correct equation appears below. In Christopher Anderson's News & Comment article "Rocky road for Federal Research Inc." (22 Oct., p. 496), a comment from National Institutes of Health neuroscientist Michael Rogawski regarding Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) delays did not refer to his own CRADA experiences, which he says were not characterized by inordinate delays. Rogawski was referring to the effect on scientists in general of the delays inherent in what he considers appropriate scientific and administrative review.
