Corrections and clarifications

Throughout the Research Article "Autoproteolysis in hedgehog protein biogenesis" by John J. Lee et al. (2 Dec., p. 1528) the word "disc" was incorrectly spelled "disk." In figure 4C (p. 1531), lane 9 should have been labeled "flu227," not "flu408."     

Erratum

In equation 6 of the Research Article "Effects of age on dopamine and seratonin receptors measured by positron tomography in the living human brain" by D. F. Wong et al. (21 Dec., p. 1393) C(p)(t) in the denominator of the last term should have been A(cb)(t). This does not affect the rest of the derivation. In the caption of figure 1, the first word, "Decrease," should have been "Change." The data in parts A and B of figure 3 should have been regraphed on common axes to facilitate comparison. A corrected figure 3 is shown below.     

Corrections and clarifications

In the response by E. A. Finch and S. M. Goldin (5 Aug., p. 813) to the technical comment "Calcium and inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate-induced Ca(2+) release" by L. Combettes and P. Champeil (5 Aug., p. 813), in parts B and C of figure 1 (p. 814), the insets referring to Ca concentrations were inadvertantly interchanged. The concentration for figure 1B should have been, "300 nM Ca" and that for figure 1C should have been, "10 nM Ca."     

Erratum

In the report "Cloning and expression of a cocaine-sensitive dopamine transporter complementary DNA" by S. Shimada et al. (25 Oct., p. 576), three amino acids were inadvertently omitted in figure 1. A tyrosine (Y) should have been at position 156 so that phenylalanine (F) and asparagine (N) were at 155 and 157, respectively; a cysteine (C) should have been at position 242 so that alanine (A) and leucine (L) were at 241 and 243, respectively; and a proline (P) should have been at position 272 so that methionine (M) and Y were at 271 and 273, respectively.     

Etratum

In the report "Eruption of El Chichón volcano, Chiapas, Mexico, 28 March to 7 April 1982" by J. M. Hoffer et al. (24 Dec., p. 1307), the millimeter readings in figure 2 (p. 1308) were in error by a magnitude of one; the 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 mm contours should have been 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 mm.     

Corrections and clarifications

In table 1 (p. 1124) of the article "Prehistoric extinction of Pacific island birds: Biodiversity meets zooarchaeology," by David W. Steadman (24 Feb., p. 1123), the column headings for modern and fossil record were reversed; under each island name, the letters "F M" should have appeared.     

Erratum

As published, figure 2 in the report "Disruption of the terrestrial plant ecosystem at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, western interior" by R. H. Tschudy et al. (7 Sept., p. 1030) contained two errors. The break in the stratigraphic column should have been 3 m, and the iridium concentration should have been in parts per trillion. The correct figure is reproduced below. [see figure in source PDF].

The third sentence of the legend for Fig. 2 of the report, "Blocking by picrotoxin of peripheral inhibition in crayfish," by W. G. Van der Kloot, J. Robbins, and I. M. Cooke [Science 127, 521 (7 Mar. 1958)] should have read "The inhibitory nerve was simultaneously stimulated at a rate of 21 stimulations per second (broken line) or at 150 stimulations per second (dotted line)."

In the letter from Martin M. Barnes (3 Dec. 1976, p. 998), the first citation in reference 1 should have been J. Swarz, "Poisoning farmworkers," Environment 17 (No. 4), 26 (1975).

Figure 1 in the report "Ice nucleation by, alcohols arranged in monolayers at the surface of water drops" by M. Gavish et al. (16 Nov., p. 973) should have been credited to B. Kamb [in Structural Chemistry and Molecular Biology, A. Rich, Ed. (Freeman, New York, 1968), pp. 507-542, figure 3a].

In the Erratum (7 Dec., p. 1320) about the Editors' response to George Legge's letter of 16 November (p. 889), the error was not corrected. Reference should have been made to a "300-nm beam spot," not a "300-microm beam spot."

In the report "Antibodies to peptides detect new hepatitis B antigen: Serological correlation with hepatocellular carcinoma" by A. M. Moriarty, H. Alexander, G. B. Thornton, and R. A. Lerner (25 Jan., p. 429), the legend of table 1 should have begun, "Reactivity of human serum samples with peptide 99 and peptide 142," not "Reactivity of human liver samples...."

In the report "The color of the surface of Venus" by C. M. Pieters et al. (12 Dec., p. 1379), figure 2 on page 1382 was incorrectly printed upside down. The correct figure and caption appear below. Reference 11 in the caption is to A. S. Selivanov et al., Kosm. Issled. 21, 176 (1983) and A. S. Selivanov et al., ibid., p. 183. [SEE FIGURE 2 IN SOURCE PDF].     

ERTS: Surveying Earth's Resources from Space

Several errors occurred in the Research News story "ERTS: Surveying earth's resources from space" (6 Apr. 1973) by Thomas H. Maugh II. In column 3, page 50, the statement, "It thus maps an area of about 6.5 km(2) every day," should read "6.5 x 10(6) km(2)." In Fig. 3, the land masses are identified as Manhattan and Staten Island; actually, the spit at the left of the figure is Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and the barrier beaches further north are Rockaway, Long Beach, and Jones Beach, from left to right. The negative for Fig. 4 was inadvertently flipped over so that the illustration is a mirror image of the actual picture. It has also since been brought to the author's attention that " the previously unsuspected difference in salinity" in the Great Salt Lake described in the caption of Fig. 2 was, in fact, well known before the ERTS picture was taken.

In the report "Induction of hemoglobin accumulation in human K562 cells by hemin is reversible" by A. Dean et al. (24 Apr., p. 459), the second sentence in the legend for figure 1 should have read: "A stock solution of 600 microM hemin was prepared by adding 0.3 ml of 1N NaOH to 19.56 mg of hemin, and then adding 0.3 ml of 0.5M tris base, 2.5 ml of cell growth medium, and 0.35 ml of 1N HCI, and then diluting to a final volume of 50 ml with cell growth medium."     

Erratum

In the report " Variable occurrence of the nrdB intron in the T-even phages suggests intron mobility" by J. Pedersen-Lane and M. Belfort (10 July, p.182), two sentences were incorrectly printed. On page 182, the sentence beginning at the bottom of the second column should have read, "The td intron is indeed homologous throughout the T-even phages, as demonstrated by hybridization and dideoxy primer-extension analysis of pre-messenger RNA (pre-mRNA) and splice site products (11)." On page 183, in the legend to figure 2, the next-to-last sentence should have read, "Oligonucleotide probes (1 to 4) indicated by arrows are as described (21)."

In the report by E. T. Walters,. T. J. Carew, and E. R. Kandel (30 Jan., p. 504), labels (B) and (C) of Fig. 1 were inadvertently reversed. Figure 1B should be "Siphon withdrawal," and Fig. 1C should be "Inking."

In figure 1 of the report "How bees remember flower shapes" by J. L. Gould (22 Mar., p. 1492), the results shown for the 24-clement patterns (K(1) and K(2)) should have been P > 0.05.     

Corrections and clarifications

In the report "DNA sequence determination by hybridization: A strategy for efficient large-scale sequencing" by R. Drmanac et al. (11 June, p. 1649), the sequence of clone 8 in figure 2B (p. 1650) was inadvertently shortened by the deletion of "GA" at the seventh position from the right in the second line. In reference 20 of the same report, the probes ATATGGGG and ATGTCCTG should not have been included.
