Supportive breeding of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) is commonly employed to maintain numbers of fish where the species has become locally endangered. Increasingly, one of the main aims of population management is the preservation of natural genetic diversity. If the stocks employed in supportive breeding exhibit reduced variation they can alter the natural pattern of genetic variation observed in wild populations. In northern Spain, wild adult salmon are caught every year from local rivers and artificially crossed in order to create supportive stocks. The offspring are hatchery reared until the juvenile stage, then released into the same river where their parents were caught. In the current study, our findings demonstrate that although adult broodstock exhibit a pattern of variation similar to the wild populations, variability at microsatellite loci was drastically reduced in the juveniles released into one of three rivers analyzed. The contribution of broodstock to this juvenile stock was examined by pedigree analysis. A restricted number of females contributing to the hatchery stock was identified as the main cause of loss in genetic variation, possibly due to overmaturity of some multi-sea-winter females. We suggest that better monitoring and control of parental contribution will help in solving the problem of loss of genetic diversity in hatchery populations.  相似文献

The effect of origin, smolt size and year of release on the sea migration pattern of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) in the Baltic Sea was examined by tagging experiments conducted in 1991–1993 on wild and reared smolts of the Simojoki river salmon stock. The tag recovery data analysed by log-linear models revealed significant differences in both spatial and temporal sea migrations between the wild and reared salmon; the variation was attributed to the year of release and to the origin of the fish. Grilse accounted for the majority of reared returners (76%) but for a smaller proportion (46%) of the wild fish. The effect of smolt size could be studied only in the smolt groups tagged in 1991. Wild fish were more frequently (71%) caught in the Baltic Main Basin than were reared fish (51%) during their second sea year, and the size variation between wild and reared smolts did not explain the recovery site. No such differences in spatial distribution were found during the third sea year. The tagging place (hatchery/trap) of the reared fish did not affect their later sea migration. The differences in sea migration patterns suggest that the wild salmon are more vulnerable to the intensive salmon fishery in the Baltic Main Basin than are reared fish.  相似文献

The level of genetic diversity in a cultured Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) population from Tasmania, Australia was examined at 11 microsatellite loci and compared with that in its progenitor population from the River Philip in Nova Scotia, Canada. The reference progenitor population consisted of archived scales collected from wild River Philip salmon in 1971 and 1972, not long after salmon from this river were imported into Australia in the mid‐1960s. The Tasmanian hatchery stock had a significant reduction in the mean number of alleles (31–43%) and mean allelic richness (28–39%) across all microsatellite loci compared with the wild Canadian population. Mean heterozygosity levels remained unchanged. Estimates of per‐generation effective population sizes for the Tasmanian population, based on allele frequency temporal variance with the wild progenitor population, ranged from 102–207 individuals and reflected hatchery records.  相似文献

The genetic composition of consecutive year classes of two farmed rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), strains was assessed, using starch gel electrophoresis of 11 enzymes encoded by a minimum of 23 loci, many of which have been shown to be polymorphic in previous studies. Angle frequencies at the majority of polymorphic loci varied significantly between year classes of each strain. Several alleles which were present at low frequency in the 1900 year classes, were absent in the samples from the 1991 cohorts. However, mean heterozygosity per locus (H) did not differ significantly between year classes of either strain, illustrating that allelic diversity is a more sensitive indicator of loss of genetic variability than mean heterozygosity. This heterogeneity between cohorts is probably due either to broodstock maintenance practices such as the use of insufficient numbers of spawners, or, in the case of one strain, to bottlenecking caused by selection for late maturation and increased growth rate. Genetic monitoring of all year classes of reared strains is suggested, if insufficient breeding and distribution records are available from egg producers. Such records are often unavailable in commercial situations.  相似文献

Abstract. Growth and survival were compared among uniform- and mixed-age groups of Florida red tilapia fry during sex reversal in brackishwater (12ppt) tanks, under commercial-scale hatchery conditions. Three treatment groups of post-yolksac (i.e. free-swimming) stage fry of different age compositions were compared: (1) 100% fry collected at the free-swimming stage (FSF); (2) 100% fry obtained through artificial incubation of eggs and non-swimming sacfry (ENS); and (3) a mixed group consisting of 50% of each type (FSF+ENS). Fry were stocked into 530–1 cylindroconical tanks at a density of seven fish/l (3700/tank) and reared on an androgen-treated diet for 30 days. While specific growth rates (range = 17·1–17·8% body weight/day) did not differ (P > 0·05) among treatments, significant (P < 0.05) differences were observed for survival and feed conversion ratio (FCR). ENS showed highest survival (76·8%) and lowest FCR (1·14), FSF showed intermediate survival (59·2%) and FCR(l·33), while the mixed-age group (FSF+ENS) showed lowest survival (38·5%) and highest FCR (1·70). Under all treatments, a majority of fry losses were attributed to cannibalism. A highly significant ( P < 0·001) negative regression between survival and coefficient of variation of initial weights (CV = SD/) indicated that cannibalism was reduced by minimizing age/size variation at stocking. The CV of initial weight may be a useful parameter for predicting fry survival under intensive tank culture.  相似文献

Heterozygosity at seven enzyme loci was compared with the degree of fluctuating asymmetry of three bilateral traits in a wild population of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) and a hatchery strain derived from it. In the wild population, average heterozygosity per fish was higher (p < 0.01) and average asymmetric value per fish was lower (p < 0.01), compared with the hatchery strain. Analyses at the intrapopulation level did not provide unequivocal support for the relationship between heterozygosity and developmental stability, with correlation between the number of heterozygous loci per fish and the asymmetric value per fish being non-significant. However, comparisons of asymmetric value per fish between homozygous and heterozygous individuals at separate loci indicated that heterozygotes had significantly lower asymmetry values per fish at IDDH-1* in the hatchery sample. These results are discussed in relation to the potential utility of fluctuating character asymmetry as an indicator of loss of heterozygosity in cultured Atlantic salmon stains.  相似文献

Abstract. One thousand each of pond and hatchery reared 0+ brown trout, Salmo trutta L., were fin-clipped and released in a 1300-m2 large earthen pond. The pond was drawn down 5 days after the introduction, and descending individuals were caught in a trap at the outlet. A total of 904 pond-reared and 890 hatchery-reared fish were recaptured, i.e. a loss of 9·6 and 110% respectively, A total of 25 pond-reared and 16 hatchery reared fish were recorded stranded in the pond during the draw-down, accounting for 2·7 and 1·8% of total recoveries.
Pond-reared fish descended significantly earlier than did hatchery fish. Most individuals descended during the first 4·5h (75-83%). However, the final recoveries were made 10 days (233h) after the first descent.  相似文献

Abstract. One hundred specimens of the European seabass. Dicentrarchus labrax L., from a natural population (Cádiz, Spain) were analysed by starch gel electrophoresis for 23 enzymes; 49 loci were identified, of which five were polymorphic (ADH*, AAT-3*, EST-.3*, MEP-1* and SOD-2*) P = 10·2% and HQ = 1·8%. Twenty specimens from a hatchery at Tinamenor in northern Spain (Fl progeny from wild) were analysed for 28 different enzymes. A total of 61 loci were identified of which 4 were polymorphic (LDH-1*, LDH-2*, MEP-1*, and XDH-2*) P = 6·6%,Ho= 1·5%. A total of 31 enzyme systems and 79 different loci were analysed in the two populations. The results suggest that the Cádiz and Tinamenor stocks are reproductively isolated and show a level of stock differentiation not previously known in populations of this species. An estimate of genetic distance based on the 31 loci compared in both populations gave a value of D=0·012+0·018 and a genetic similarity of I=0·988. The implications of these results for fisheries and aquaculture are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Abstract. Significant differences were found in allelic frequency distribution among three strains of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum). The isocitrate dehydrogenase ( IDH-3, 4 * 1.1.1.42) locus was fixed in two of the strains while the superoxide dismutase ( SOD-I * 1.15.1.1) locus was absent in one of the strains.
Similarity indices ranged from 0·973 to 0·988 on the scale of 1·000 among pairwise comparisons of the strains while Nei's genetic distance was 0·012 between Mount Lassen and Manx, 0·025 between Mount Lassen and Tagwerker and 0·027 between Manx and Tagwerker. Gene diversity was highest in the Mount Lassen strain, followed by Manx, with Tagwerker having the least. These differences in gene diversity were attributed to breeding and management practices used at the hatchery. The need for characterization of strains of rainbow trout, especially in crossbreeding programmes that aim to increase genetic variation, was emphasized by these results.  相似文献

Abstract – After release to the wild, captive reared salmon have shown lower foraging rates on natural prey and impaired ability to avoid natural predators and thus lower survival compared with wild‐born conspecifics. Here, we examine whether captive breeding influences learning of foraging on natural prey and how enriched rearing methods may improve foraging on natural prey by Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) parr. We reared offspring of hatchery or wild salmon of the same population in either a standard or enriched environment at production‐scale densities. The enriched environment featured submerged overhead shelter, varying water current, depth and direction and consequently alterations in food dispersion. Parr reared in the enriched environment expressed higher feeding rates, and parr of wild origin started to forage earlier on natural prey. The enriched method promoted foraging of hatchery reared parr on natural prey and is easily applicable to commercial production of salmonids for reintroduction or stock enhancement purposes.  相似文献

Many studies have documented that hatchery‐reared salmonids generally have inferior survival after being stocked compared with wild conspecifics, hatchery and wild salmonids have been observed to differ in their antipredator responses. The response of brown trout (Salmo trutta) juveniles (0+) of differing backgrounds to a live predator was compared in two experiments. First, the antipredator behaviour of predator‐naïve hatchery‐reared brown trout and wild‐exposed brown trout were assessed in behavioural trials which lasted for eight days. Second, predator‐naïve and predator‐conditioned hatchery‐reared brown trout were assessed in identical behavioural trials. Brown trout were ‘predator‐conditioned’ by being held in a stream‐water aquarium with adult Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and adult brown trout for two days prior to behavioural trials. Predator‐conditioned hatchery‐reared brown trout spent more time in shelters in the trial aquaria than predator‐naïve hatchery‐reared fish, but did not differ in time spent in the predator‐free area. Predator conditioning may account for the increased time spent in the shelter, but does not appear to have affected time spent in the predator‐free area. However, even if significant alteration in behaviour can be noted in the laboratory, the response might not be appropriate in the wild.  相似文献

Brown trout populations of three headwater streams in the Northern Limestone Alps of Austria were supplemented by three‐month‐old hatchery‐reared parr from a wild and locally adapted strain and a nonresident domesticated hatchery strain. Growth and survival were monitored with three surveys over a period of 16 months after stocking. Fish descending from the wild reared origin strain demonstrated higher survival rates than the hatchery strain. Differences in growth were found among the investigated streams but not among the investigated strains. The differing temperature regimes of the streams were considered as the primary factor causing those disparities. We conclude that stocking measures had little or no additive effect on successful natural reproduction, as the resident wild brown trout performed significantly better than the stocked fish.  相似文献

Abstract. Blood spots in the eye and haemorrhages in the musculature of the caudal peduncle were the main indication of disease in Australian hatchery reared brook trout Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill) and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. Mortalities of 0·1-0·5% per day occurred for 3–4 weeks in fish stocked in circular ponds in the months of February and March when temperatures were falling from 23–11·C. The bacterium belonging to the Family Enterobacteriaceae had similarities with Yersinia ruckeri (the RM bacterium) and Serratia liquefaciens . As a temporary designation SBS was used. It is recommended that its taxonomic position remain sub judice for the present. Inoculation experiments on brook trout and landlocked Atlantic salmon indicated that signs appeared 2–7 days after inoculation and that rainbow trout Salmo gairdneri Richardson were resistant to the disease.  相似文献

Abstract. Analyses of the Sr-contenl in scales of Atlantic salmon, Salmo saiar L ., smolts from two hatcheries revealed significant ( P < 0·001) differences. These differences were reflected in the Sr-conients of their respective diets. Sr-values in scale samples taken from wild salmon smolts from 10 Norwegian rivers showed a considerable variation. Analysis of variance showed that sampling site was the major source of variation. In general the Sr-content in scales cannot be used to distinguish between hatchery-reared and wild salmon smolls, although the present results nevertheless suggest that such a distinction is possible in some localities.
The Sr-contenl of the vertebrae was somewhat lower than that of the scales in both hatchery-reared and wild smolls. The Sr-conient of the scales of sea trout, Salmo trutta L., smolts from one of the sampling sites was significantly ( P < 0·001) higher than that of scales of Atlantic salmon smolts from the same site. The Sr-content of the scales of all the salmon smolts sampled from a lake was higher than the values recorded for sea trout and salmon after their stay in the sea. Use of the Sr-contenl of the scales todistinguish between migratory and resident individuals should therefore be done with care.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon populations have experienced strong declines in most large European rivers. In the Loire Basin, France, a major restocking effort has been carried out on the Allier River to reduce the wild population decline. This study aimed at investigating the trophic insertion of hatchery‐reared salmon parr and whether they compete for resources with native fish species. For this purpose, two riffles located in the upstream and downstream parts of the restocked area have been surveyed monthly following the initial 0+ salmon fry release. 0+ parr densities remained high upstream, with autumnal values greater than those recommended to maximise smolt production. In contrast, downstream densities declined to weak values despite a faster increase in size, probably mainly due to summer temperatures rising above the discomfort threshold. By analysing the vulnerability to predation of ingested invertebrate prey, we highlighted the role of habitat constraints in driving most of the different fish species to a likely opportunistic utilisation of available food resources. As a result, species such as stone loaches and barbel juveniles exhibited narrow trophic niches and high overlaps with 0+ parr. Nonetheless, both abundant prey resources and spatial or temporal habitat segregation have limited interspecific competition, enabling competitive coexistence of sympatric species, except for barbel juveniles in certain circumstances. Therefore, our findings suggest that future restocking programmes should carefully consider the thermal and hydraulic conditions regarding further smolt production as well as their general trophic context, according to the potential inconvenience of restocked salmon fry arrival relative to native species.  相似文献

Samples of wild and domesticated salmon in Norway were genotyped at 12 microsatellite loci to compare allelic variability and investigate the potential of microsatellite markers for identification of individuals. The following loci were amplified: Ssa20, Ssa62NVH, Ssa71NVH, Ssa90NVH, Ssa103NVH, Ssa105NVH, SsaF43; Ssa20.19; Ssa13.37; SsOSL85; Ssa197; Ssa28. All domesticated strain samples displayed reduced variability compared to wild salmon. On average 58% of the allelic richness observed within the four wild stocks were present in the samples taken from domesticated strains. No systematic differences in heterozygosity were observed between samples representing the two groups.

Pairwise genetic distances, as estimated by Fst values and Nei [1978] was 2–8 times higher among domesticated strains than among wild strains. Among the wild stocks, the highest genetic distances were observed between the river Neiden, located in northern Norway, and the other wild stocks located in the southwest of Norway.

Assignment tests indicated that the wild and domesticated salmon could be distinguished with high precision. Less than 4% of domesticated salmon were misassigned as wild salmon, and less than 3% of wild fish were misassigned as domesticated salmon. Fish from individual domesticated strains were identified with similarly high precision. Assignment to wild salmon stocks was less accurate, with the exception of the sample taken from the river Neiden, for which 93% of the individuals were correctly assigned.  相似文献

The performance of hatchery‐reared juveniles either in aquaculture grow‐out systems or stock enhancement is likely to be dependent on a range of factors during the hatchery phase of production. With recent progress in the development of hatchery systems for the mud crabs Scylla spp., there is growing interest in evaluation of the quality of hatchery‐reared juveniles relative to wild seed crabs as currently used in aquaculture. Hatchery‐reared and wild‐collected Scylla paramamosain juveniles were stocked either together in ponds or separately. All crabs were tagged with microwire‐coded tags, so that origin could be determined in the mixed groups. Preliminary validation demonstrated that tagging did not affect survival or growth, with a tag retention of 94%. After 106 days of culture, there was no significant difference in survival at harvest between the two sources of crabs. The wild juvenile crabs had a significantly higher initial weight:carapace width (CW) ratio compared with those from the hatchery, indicating a difference in condition. However, where crabs were stocked separately, the hatchery‐reared animals exhibited significantly faster growth than those collected from the wild, both in terms of specific growth rate and CW increase per month. However, in the mixed ponds, where there was competition with wild crabs, there was no significant difference in growth rate between crabs from the two sources. Overall, the results demonstrate that the growth performance of hatchery‐reared S. paramamosain can at least equal that of wild‐collected seed crabs in ponds culture.  相似文献

An animal's performance during its early life stage can greatly influence its survival to adulthood. Therefore, understanding aspects of early life history can be informative, particularly when designing management plans to rebuild a population. For a threatened population of fall Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) in the Snake River of Idaho, we reconstructed the early life history for 124 returning wild and hatchery adults using information recorded in their otoliths. Of our sampled wild adults (n = 61), 43% and 49% reared within the Snake River and Clearwater/Salmon rivers. We also found that only 21% of our sampled wild adults exhibited the historically common subyearling out‐migration strategy, in which juveniles exit freshwater shortly after hatching, while the remaining wild adults exhibited the yearling out‐migration strategy (i.e., individuals delay their freshwater exit). As expected, yearlings had, on average, a significantly larger body size than subyearlings at ocean entry. However, 35% of wild yearlings overlapped in size with wild subyearlings suggesting that spending more time in freshwater might not necessarily result in a larger body size. Lastly, we observed that variability in fork length at Snake River egress and ocean entry were best explained by migration strategy and where it reared, followed by hatch year and sex. Results from this study highlight the utility of adult otoliths in providing details about early life history, an understanding of which is critical to the conservation of Snake River fall Chinook salmon.  相似文献

Michigan's fisheries rely primarily upon the hatchery propagation of salmonid fish for release in public waters. One limitation on the success of these efforts is the presence of bacterial pathogens, including Aeromonas salmonicida, the causative agent of furunculosis. This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of A. salmonicida in Michigan fish, as well as to determine whether biochemical or gene sequence variability exists among Michigan isolates. A total of 2202 wild, feral and hatchery‐propagated fish from Michigan were examined for the presence of A. salmonicida. The examined fish included Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), coho salmon, O. kisutcha (Walbaum), steelhead trout, O. mykiss (Walbaum), Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L., brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), and yellow perch, Perca flavescens (Mitchill). Among these, 234 fish yielded a brown pigment‐producing bacterium that was presumptively identified as A. salmonicida. Further phenotypic and phylogenetic analyses identified representative isolates as Aeromonas salmonicida subsp. salmonicida and revealed some genetic and biochemical variability. Logistic regression analyses showed that infection prevalence varied according to fish species/strain, year and gender, whereby Chinook salmon and females had the highest infection prevalence. Moreover, this pathogen was found in six fish species from eight sites, demonstrating its widespread nature within Michigan.  相似文献
