Pruning in late summer was compared with winter pruning on mature 23-year-old spur pruned trees of Cox’s Orange Pippin on M.2 rootstock. Two nitrogen treatments were superimposed, namely a standard dressing of 126 units N (sulphate of ammonia) applied in March as compared with 288 units N (nitrate of soda) applied in mid-August at the time of summer pruning. Summer pruning reduced trunk girth increment, advanced blossom development, increased the amount of red colour on the fruits and drastically reduced the incidence of bitter pit in stored fruit. The treatments did not affect cropping. Nitrogen treatments had no overall effect upon the incidence of bitter pit, but in the first season, when bitter pit was most prevalent, high levels of N applied in August reduced the amount, a similar trend being recorded the following year.  相似文献

Summary

We explored the potential of deficit irrigation (DI) applied at different times during the growing season for improving fruit quality and storage potential of ‘Braeburn’ apple growing in a commercial orchard. Because DI often reduces fruit size, effects of fruit size on fruit quality were also examined. The irrigation treatments were: commercially irrigated control (C), early deficit irrigation (EDI) applied from 63 to 118 d after full bloom (DAFB), and late decifit irrigation (LDI) applied from 118 DAFB to final harvest on 201 DAFB. Both EDI and LDI improved fruit quality in terms of increases in: dry-matter concentration (DMC) at harvest, flesh firmness, total soluble solids, and total soluble sugars both at harvest and after storage. The DI fruit had less weight loss during storage than did C fruit. Deficit irrigation affected the concentrations of a few individual aroma volatiles but not total volatile concentration. Incidence of physiological disorders was not affected by irrigation treatments. Mean fruit weight was lower in DI than in C but the difference was not significant. Among the quality attributes studied, only firmness and DMC were affected by fruit size with their values being higher in smaller fruit.  相似文献

Summary

Plums (Prunus salicina cv. Songold) were cold stored according to a single-temperature regime comprising 28 d at ?0.5°C, and a dual-temperature regime comprising 10 d at ?0.5°C followed by 18 d at 7.2°C. After cold storage, the plums were ripened for 8 d at 10°C. Pectolytic enzyme activity, pectic composition, internal conductivity and gel breakdown were determined at seven stages during storage and ripening. Although not exposed to chilling temperatures prior to harvest, approximately 10% of the plums exhibited gel breakdown at harvest, indicating that the disorder cannot be classified solely as a cold-storage chilling disorder. The higher temperatures of the dual-temperature regime resulted in higher polygalacturonase activity than with the single-temperature fruit. Consequently, protopectin degradation and the concomitant production of water- soluble pectins were greater in the dual-temperature fruit. Single-temperature storage resulted in higher pectinmethylesterase activity during the latter stages of storage and during ripening. Increases in temperature after 10 d and 28 d in dual- and single- temperature fruit, respectively, were associated with significant increases in the viscosity of water-soluble pectins, internal conductivity and gel breakdown. The significant positive correlation between internal conductivity and gel breakdown suggested that membrane integrity is closely associated with development of gel breakdown.  相似文献

Consumption of fresh apple fruits can induce allergic reactions in humans. The apple allergen Mal?d?1 is responsible for these allergic reactions in humans in Central Europe and North America. Biosynthesis of Mal?d?1 depends on apple cultivar, and its concentration increases with time during fruit storage. However, data on the impact of different fruit storage conditions during long-term storage are scarce. Hence, the Mal?d?1 contents of eight apple cultivars were analyzed for this study during long-term storage in a cold chamber as well as under controlled atmosphere conditions (CA). After harvest, apple fruits were stored for 12, 20, 28 or 36 weeks in a cold-chamber at +?2?°C or as under controlled atmosphere conditions of 1.5?% CO2, 1.5?% O2 at +?2?°C. Mal?d?1 content in apple fruit of all eight cultivars examined increased during fruit storage. In most cases, differences between Mal?d?1 of apple fruits stored in the cold chamber and under CA conditions were significant, but inconsistent. In apple cv. ??Elise??, fruits stored in the cold chamber contained more Mal?d?1 compared with those stored in CA, whereas the situation reversed in other varieties like cv. ??Boskoop??. The greatest Mal?d?1 content was measured in fruits of cvs. ??Golden Delicious?? and ??Gala??, whereas the smallest Mal?d?1 level was in cvs. ??Elise?? and ??Pinova?? over the whole storage time. Overall, this experiment showed the complexity of the relationship between the Mal?d?1 content, allergenicity of apple fruits, different cultivars, storage conditions and storage time. Persons allergic to apple fruits should consume the fruits as fresh as possible or only after a limited storage time. Furthermore, they should prefer apple varieties with a low content of allergenic proteins, such as cv. ??Elise?? or cv. ??Boskoop?? as a cultivar known for its large polyphenol content.  相似文献

Summary

Sweet cherries obtained from a rain-protected orchard were subjected to various controlled atmosphere storage conditions for up to seven weeks. Quality parameters responded differentially to various CA-conditions: changes in fruit firmness, sugar content and colour were mostly not significant. However, the storage conditions exerted significant impact on other parameters such as respiration rate, RQ, ATP- and ADP-concentrations. Air-stored fruits respired at significant higher rates than CA or ultra low oxygen-stored fruits. Moreover, the impact of CA-storage conditions persisted even after a conditioning period of 36 h at room temperature. The ATP and ADP concentrations of sweet cherries behaved similarly, where a combination of reduced O2 and very high CO2 concentration (12% or above) resulted in highly reduced ATP-concentration in the fruit tissue. A taste panel considered fruits stored under 6% CO2 + 2% O2 as good, although there was a strong indication that it is better to store sweet cherries for a limited time (up to five weeks) under a low O2 concentration combined with a high CO2 concentration (12%) or under a high O2 concentration combined with a very high CO2 (18%).  相似文献

Summary

Fresh ‘Patterson’ apricot was harvested at three fruit maturity levels and characterized with measurements of flesh colour, Brix, acidity and levels of specific sugars. Fruit from the three maturity classes were sun-dried under uniform conditions. Dry fruit was again analysed for the content of specific sugars before cold storage. Stored fruit were sampled periodically for colour coordinates L*, C* and H° during an eight-month period. The study was repeated for two harvest seasons. In each season, significant differences (P≤0.05) were observed between the three fruit maturity classes for Brix, acidity, C* and H8. Levels of specific sugars varied significantly (P≤0.01) with regard to fruit maturity class, tissue type and fruit status. Regression analysis of colour coordinate changes during the storage period indicated significant (P≤0.05) differences in rate of colour shift of L*, C* and H8 relative to fruit maturity class. While dried fruit of the immature class was of substandard quality after the storage period, both medium and most mature dry fruit were of sufficient quality to warrant marketing even after eight months of cold storage.  相似文献

In 1989 and 1990, preharvest applications of 2-chloroethyl phosphonic acid (ethephon) at dosages from 50–400 mg 1’1 were applied to ‘Fuji’ and ‘Granny Smith’ apples. In 1989, the greatest reduction in scald after storage on both ‘Fuji’ and ‘Granny Smith’, relative to the untreated control resulted from applying 400 mg 1?1 ethephon five weeks before harvest and was 45% and 55% of controls, respectively. On ‘Granny Smith’ 400 mg 1? was also effective when applied three weeks before harvest. In 1990, preharvest applications of ethephon at either 200 or 400 mg 1?1 reduced scald in both cultivars relative to the controls. Ethephon applied six weeks before harvest had no dosage effect on scald reduction after storage. There was no consistent effect on fruit maturity at harvest from any treatment in either year, and no effect on quality of fruit out of storage.  相似文献

Softening process and total antioxidant activity were evaluated in kiwifruit differently exposed to light intensity and harvested at two different times (October 10 and November 14). Fruit was stored for 2 months at 0 °C (S1) and then maintained for a week at ambient temperature (S2). The results showed that fruit harvested later presented a faster softening rate during storage than fruit harvested earlier, even if antioxidant activity did not change. Light-exposed fruit showed higher flesh firmness than that of shaded ones. Polygalacturonase activity was higher in kiwifruit maintained for a week at ambient temperature after cool storage and, in particular the highest value was recorded in fruit harvested later. The behaviour of β-galactosidase was different: it did not show changes in fruit harvested later and significantly decreased in light- and shade-exposed fruit harvested earlier.  相似文献

Mature ‘Queen’ pineapple fruit were stored for 30 days at various temperatures and afterwards examined for internal quality. A storage temperature of 8°C is at present generally accepted as the optimum. It was found that peroxidase (PO) activity is correlated with storage temperature and the appearance of storage injury symptoms. High storage temperatures of 10°C, 12°C and 16°C resulted in a high PO activity with internal browning of the core and pulp whereas temperatures of 2°C, 4°C and 6°C resulted in a low PO activity and white watery pulp. To verify these results, polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was carried out with the proteins in the fruit. The difference in the two extreme temperatures of 2°C and 16°C resulted in a high intensity of high molecular mass proteins at 2°C and an increase in intensity of low molecular mass proteins at 16°C. There is a distinct “change over” of these protein band intensities at 8°C to 12°C. It is presumed that the correct storage temperature will be within these two limits.  相似文献

Summary

An experiment was carried out over a six year period to relate the storage quality of ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’ apples to the mineral composition of leaves, fruitlets and fruits and to the climatic conditions during development. The apples were sampled from 24 orchards over a wide geographic area. The extent to which physiological disorders, bitter pit and low temperature breakdown (LTB), and quality attributes, greenness and firmness, of stored fruit could be predicted either before or at harvest was determined. For each response variable, a short-list of up to 12 potential explanatory variables was selected from an initial set of up to 54 possible explanatory variables, using stepwise regression techniques. Predictive models were generated by selecting variables from the initial short-list using a cross validation technique. The average incidence of bitter pit in controlled atmosphere (CA) storage at 1.2% O2 (<1% CO2) was 4% compared with 12% for similar samples stored in air. Predictive models accounted for up to 67% of the variance in bitter pit in air-stored fruit but the percentage was lower (39%) for fruit stored in CA. The concentrations of calcium and potassium in fruit were particularly important for predicting bitter pit in air-stored fruit but less so for fruit stored in CA where more explanatory variables were required for prediction. Fifty one per cent of the variance of LTB in fruit stored in CA was accounted for by a nine-variable model incorporating three climatic variables. A simple three-variable model (leaf nitrogen concentration, harvest firmness and fruit dry weight) accounted for 67% of the variance in ex-store firmness and the addition of other nutritional and climatic variables increased the percentage variance accounted for to 76%. Seventy-one per cent of the variance in the greenness of fruit after CA storage was accounted for by a six-variable model. The possible physiological significance of the explanatory variables in each model is discussed.  相似文献

Cultural services provided by green space networks and in particular leisure and recreational opportunities are central to the quality of life of those living in urban areas. However, the literature concerned with green space networks has mainly focused on planning aspects rather than on recreational use. The aim of this study was to evaluate the recreational use of, and concerns about, a naturalistic green space network. The case study location was the naturalistic woodland framework in Birchwood, Warrington, UK, known as Birchwood Forest Park. Non-participant observation and content analysis of local archives were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Birchwood Forest Park was used more for leisure activities (52.8%, N=1825; i.e. recreation, sports or play) than for utilitarian purposes (47.2%, N=1825; i.e. as walking or cycling thoroughfare). However, utilitarian walking (30%, N=1825) was the most frequent type of activity observed. The maintenance of the naturalistic woodland framework was the most frequent concern mentioned in the local archives (33.3%, N=234). This case study suggests that the recreational patterns in, as well as peoples' concerns about, naturalistic urban landscapes may be a factor of high-quality maintenance and associated local aesthetic and cultural perceptions. In developing, planning or managing comprehensive urban green space networks it is important to ensure that natural looking scenes are well maintained and that the local community is culturally connected to such scenes.  相似文献

Summary

The aim of this work was to investigate the fermentative metabolism of ‘Conference’ pears during different storage regimes. Fruits were stored at 0°C in the following controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions: 6 kPa CO2 + 0.5 kPa O2;3 kPa CO2 + 1 kPa O2; or 1 kPa CO2 + 2 kPa O2; and also in regular air (RA) as a control. Pears kept in RA showed low pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogensase (ADH) activities, and correspondingly low levels of ethanol and acetaldehyde production as long as the fruits were maintained at low temperatures. During shelf-life at 20°C, RA-fruits released higher amounts of acetaldehyde, while ethanol production remained low. Lactate concentrations in RA-stored pears increased continuously in the second part of the storage period and during shelf-life, while lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity remained low. During CA-storage, ‘Conference’ pears showed continuous increases in the activities of PDC and ADH, mainly in fruits stored under high CO2 and/or low O2 partial pressures. The production of ethanol and acetaldehyde was not influenced in fruits stored in 6 kPa CO2 + 0.5 kPa O2. LDH activity in CA-stored pears increased during storage, while lactate concentrations diminished. During shelf-life at 20°C, the concentrations of all measured fermentation products increased, particularly acetaldehyde and lactate. We conclude that PDC, ADH, and LDH activities are not rate-limiting factors in the accumulation of fermentation products in ‘Conference’ pears during storage and shelf-life at 20°C.  相似文献

‘Hayward’ kiwifruit were stored at 0, 5, 10, 15 and 20°C for 5, 12 and 17 days before rewarming to 20°C for 10 more days. Ethylene and CO2 production, ACC, ACC synthase (ACS) and ACC oxidase (ACO) activities, flesh and core firmness, soluble solids content (SSC) and flesh colour were measured. Kiwifruit stored at 0, 5, 10 and 15°C did not ripen, produce ethylene or show increases in ACS or ACO activity. Fruit stored for 5 days at the above temperatures, then rewarmed to 20°C, did not show any change during the following 10 days. Rewarmed fruit, pre-stored at 0–10°C for 12 days, started autocatalytic ethylene production within 24 h, followed by fruit ripening. Fruit stored at 15°C for 12 days needed 72 h to start ethylene autocatalyse and did not fully ripen during 10 days at 20°C. After 17 days storage at 0–15°C kiwifruit started autocatalytic ethylene production with no delay upon exposure to 20°C. Autocatalytic ethylene production correlated with increased ACC content, and increased activities of ACS and ACO. Fruit held continuously at 20°C started autocatalytic ethylene production after 19 days, with concomitant increases in ACC content, ACS and ACO activities and ripening. Respiration increased after rewarming, concomitantly with the increase in ethylene production.We concluded that exposing kiwifruit to chilling temperatures (0–10°C) for 12 days advanced ethylene biosynthesis and ripening when compared with fruit held continuously at 20°C. The advanced ethylene biosynthesis was due to increase ACS and ACO activities immediately upon rewarming of the fruit.  相似文献

AIM: To examine the chemo-preventive effects of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ(PPARγ) ligand rosiglitazone (RSG) on a rat model of gastric carcinogenesis induced by chemical carcinogen N-methyl-N’-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). We also attempted to identify novel anti-cancer mechanisms of rosiglitazone.METHODS: Ninety male Wistar rats were randomly allocated into six groups: group A (control group); group B (MNNG group); group C, D and E (RSG group, given different concentrations of rosiglitazone). The treatment procedures were terminated at 40th week. Stomach was harvested and gastric carcinoma was verified by histology. The gastric cancer incidence in different groups was calculated. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying the chemo-preventive effects of PPARγ ligand, we examine the gene expression profiles of MNNG induced gastric cancer and the rosiglitazone treated gastric cancer with Uniset Rat I Bioarray microarray.RESULTS: Incidence of gastric cancer in group A-E was 0% (0/10), 70% (14/20), 15% (3/20), 30% (6/20) and 30% (6/20), respectively. Gastric cancer incidence in group C, D and E was significantly lower than that in group B (P<0.01). A gene that showed prominent responses in rosiglitazone treated group was identified. The hypertension-related, calcium-regulated gene (HCaRG) was significantly upregulated in rat gastric carcinoma in rosiglitazone treated group when compared to MNNG group. The expression of HCaRG was down-regulated in human gastric cancerous tissue. CONCLUSION: PPARγ ligand rosiglitazone has a potent chemo-preventive effect against gastric cancer development in rats. Upregulation of HCaRG may be one of the mechanisms underlying the chemo-preventive effect of rosiglitazone in gastric cancer.  相似文献

Summary

Core browning often occurs as a physiological disorder in ‘Yali’ pear (Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd.) and results in a high losses during storage. In this study, the effects of fumigation with nitric oxide (NO) gas on the incidence of core browning in ‘Yali’ pears during cold storage were investigated. ‘Yali’ pear fruit were treated with 0, 10, 20, or 30 µl l–1 NO at 25º ± 2ºC for 3 h under anaerobic conditions, then stored at 0º ± 1ºC under normal air for up to 120 d. The data showed that fumigation with 20 µl l–1 NO was most effective at suppressing core browning. Thereafter, treatment with 20 µl l–1 NO was used for comparisons with untreated control fruit in experiments to measure changes in total phenolics contents, polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities, and the contents of glutathione (GSH), ascorbic acid (AsA), and NO in fruit core tissue during storage. The results showed that NO-fumigated fruit had lower PPO activity, but higher GSH and AsA contents in their core tissue compared with untreated control fruit. NO fumigation also maintained higher endogenous NO levels in core tissue after 60 d in storage, while the total phenolics contents of fruit remained at lower levels until day-100 of storage. 20 µl l–1 NO on core browning was associated with its effects on reducing PPO activity and total phenolics contents, while maintaining the contents of GSH and AsA in core tissue of ‘Yali’ pear during cold storage.  相似文献

Summary

The effects of light, moderate, or heavy thinning (5, 10, or 20 cm between fruit, respectively), conducted before (7 d or 15 d), during, or after (7 d or 15 d) pit hardening (PH), on the incidence of split pits, fruit yield, fruit quality characteristics, and leaf mineral contents, were studied in the canning peach (Prunus persica L. Batsch.) cultivar ‘Andross’ over two growing seasons. The percentage of fruit with split pits increased by 58.2% in heavily-thinned trees compared with moderately- or lightly-thinned trees, and by 22.9% for the earliest time of thinning (15 d before PH) compared with thinning during, or after PH. Fruit fresh weight (FW) was greater in moderately- and heavily-thinned trees compared with lightly-thinned trees, but yields were similar among the different crop-load treatments. The latest time of thinning (15 d after PH) also had a negative impact on yield at first harvest and on total yield, fruit FW, and delayed fruit ripening compared to thinning during, and 15 d before PH. Total anti-oxidant capacities and phenolic contents were usually greater in fruit from heavily-thinned compared with lightly- or moderately-thinned trees only when thinning was conducted during, or 15 d after PH. Moreover, anti-oxidant levels were highest in fruit from the earliest-thinned trees. There was no significant effect of crop load, or of time of thinning application treatment on fruit colour, or on the K, P, Fe, Mn, and Cu contents of leaf tissues. In conclusion, light or moderate thinning during PH resulted in minimal split pits during processing, and in optimal yields and fruit quality characteristics in the canning peach cultivar ‘Andross’.  相似文献

Summary

‘Bartlett’ and ‘d’Anjou’ pears treated with 300 nl l–1 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) did not soften to eating quality within 7 d, a desirable ripening period. A pre-conditioning method was evaluated as a means to re-initiate the softening ability of pears prior to marketing. Fruit were treated with 1-MCP and stored at –1°C in regular air, or in a controlled atmosphere for 2 – 9 months. After storage, fruit were pre-conditioned with nine temperature (10°, 15° or 20°C) and time (5, 10 or 20 d) combinations. Pre-conditioned fruit were then assessed for ripening ability following storage for 14 d at 20°C. The ripening ability of 1-MCP-treated ‘Bartlett’ fruit recovered in response to many pre-conditioning combinations of 10° – 20°C for 10 – 20 d, as indicated by a decrease in flesh firmness to 27 N or lower. The requirements for pre-conditioning regimes are storage atmosphere- and time-dependent. For ‘d’Anjou’ pears, no pre-conditioning combination resulted in re-initiating the ripening of fruit treated with 300 nl l–1 1-MCP. However, when the 1-MCP dose was 50 nl l–1, ‘d’Anjou’ pears ripened over an extended shelf-period with a substantial decrease in superficial scald. The results indicate that treatment with 1-MCP at approx. 50 nl l–1, combined with a pre-conditioning prior to marketing, is a potential means to control scald in ‘d’Anjou’ fruit. Re-initiation of ripening occurred concomitantly with a substantial increase in ethylene production. The control of superficial scald by 1-MCP in ‘d’Anjou’ pears was due to the inhibition of the biosynthesis of -farnesene and conjugated trienes.  相似文献

Summary

Four species of the genus Kalanchoë (Crassulaceae), K. peltata, K. laxiflora, K. tubiflora and K. marmorata, were regenerated from leaf explants by direct organogenesis. Each species was tested on 19 media, all based on MS-medium. One medium was without growth regulators, the remaining 18 contained a combination of auxin and cytokinin. Auxin was indole-3-acetic acid (IAA): 1.1, 2.3 or 4.6 μM (0.2, 0.4 or 0.8 mg l–1). Cytokinin was either 1-phenyl-3-(1,2,3-thidiazol-5-yl)urea(TDZ): 1.1, 2.3 or 4.5 μM (0.25, 0.5 or 1.0 mg l–1), or 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP): 1.1, 2.2 or 4.4 μM (0.25, 0.5 or 1.0 mg l–1). For each species an optimum level of growth regulators were obtained. One medium, called K22, containing 0.5 mg l–1 TDZ and 0.04 mg l–1 IAA, showed good shoot-generating capacity with all four species. Shoot elongation proved to be a problem only with K. marmorata. This could be bypassed by transferring shoots to a gibberellic acid (GA3)-containing medium, or by ventilating the containers. Shoots were rooted on MS-medium and rooted shoots were transferred to soil. K. laxiflora failed to root, but plantlets produced on the leaves were easily used for vegetable proliferation of the regenerated shoots. Eight additional Kalanchoë species and four species from other genera of Crassulaceae: Crassula, Echeveria and Sedum, were tested for regenerative capacity on K22-medium. From four Kalanchoë species and three other species, regenerated plants were established in soil. These results suggest that this medium has a high regenerative capacity within the Crassulaceae. No close dependency was found between systematic position and ability to regenerate on this medium.  相似文献
