Sulfate supplementation of Angora goats: metabolic and mohair responses.
Eight castrated male Angora goats were used in a repeated, simultaneous 4 x 4 Latin square designed experiment to evaluate metabolic and mohair responses of Angora goats to sulfate supplementation. Goats had ad libitum access to isonitrogenous diets containing a .16 (basal), .23, .29, or .34% S (DM basis), which yielded N:S ratios of 12.7, 8.3, 6.8, or 5.5:1. Feed intakes were not affected (P greater than .20) by dietary S level. Quadratic increases (P less than .05) to S supplementation were observed in grease and clean mohair production, grease and clean staple strength, and staple length. Mohair diameter, med fiber, kemp fiber, S, and cysteine contents were not affected (P greater than .05) by supplemental S. Averaged across the prefeeding, 2, 4, and 6 h postprandial sampling times, ruminal pH, ammonia N, total S, organic S, protein S, and plasma urea N and organic S concentrations were quadratically increased (P less than .05) by supplemental S. Ruminal sulfate S, total sulfide S, and plasma sulfate S were linearly increased (P less than .05) by supplemental S. Retention of N and mohair S yield exhibited quadratic increases (P less than .05), but S retention exhibited a linear increase (P less than .001) with increased S intake. Calculated by regression, the optimum dietary S concentration for maximum clean mohair production was .267% of dietary DM for a N:S ratio of 7.2:1, suggesting that the National Research Council N:S ratio of 10:1 is inadequate for Angora goats. The optimum level of digestible S was calculated to be .18% of the diet DM.

It is suspected that prolactin may affect mohair growth; therefore, effects of infusing prolactin on mohair growth were investigated using a skin perfusion technique. Seven Angora wethers (average body weight, 30 +/- 3 kg) were implanted bilaterally with silicon catheters into the superficial branches of the deep circumflex iliac artery and vein. For the first 14 d of the experiment, animals were infused (2.4 mL/h) with prolactin (one side) or control (other side) into the deep circumflex iliac arteries. The infusion rate of prolactin was 2.21 mg/d and was calculated to triple prolactin blood concentration in the perfused region. The area of skin supplied by the deep circumflex iliac artery was approximately 240 cm2. Two weeks after the cessation of infusions, 100-cm2 areas within the perfused regions were shorn to determine mohair growth. Greasy and clean mohair production was decreased (P < 0.05) by prolactin compared with control (3.79 vs 4.62 and 3.02 vs 3.67 g/[100 cm2 x 28 d], respectively). Oxygen satura tion in blood hemoglobin from the deep circumflex iliac veins was greater (P < 0.02) on the side infused with prolactin than on the control side (75.1 vs 68.2%). Higher concentrations of methionine, lysine, valine, isoleucine, and leucine were observed in blood of the deep circumflex iliac vein on the side infused with prolactin vs that infused with control (P < 0.05). In conclusion, direct skin infusion with prolactin decreased mohair fiber synthesis by the skin and may have concomitantly lessened oxygen consumption. Thus, effects of increasing prolactin concentration approximately two-fold in the skin on mohair fiber growth may not be limited to simple competition for nutrients between skin and other tissues such as the mammary gland.

Twenty-eight Angora goat doelings (average BW 22.1 kg) were used in a 150-d study to examine the effects of dietary CP level and degradability on mohair fiber production. A 2 x 2 factorial arrangement was instituted using conventional, solvent-extracted soybean meal (high degradability) or expelled, heat-treated soybean meal (low degradability) incorporated into low- (12%) or high- (19%) CP diets. Grease and clean mohair weights were greater (P less than .05) in goats fed the diets containing 19% CP. Mohair fiber diameter was not affected (P greater than .10) by dietary CP level. Clean mohair weight tended (P less than .08) to be higher in the goats fed diets containing expelled, heat-treated soybean meal. Body weight gains were not affected (P greater than .10) by CP level or degradability, whereas DMI increased (P less than .01) with increasing CP level. Ruminal fluid pH and total VFA concentrations were not affected (P greater than .10) by diet. Ruminal ammonia N concentration increased (P less than .05) as CP level in the diet increased, and postprandial changes in concentrations were less noticeable in the group fed expelled, heat-treated soybean meal. Plasma urea N (P less than .001) and total protein (P less than .01) concentration increased as dietary CP level increased. Plasma glucose was elevated (P less than .001) 2 h after feeding in the goats fed conventional, solvent-extracted soybean meal, whereas glucagon concentrations were greater at 0 and 4 h in the group fed expelled, heat-treated soybean meal.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The effect of infusing dipeptides or their amino acids on mohair growth of Angora goats was investigated using a skin perfusion technique. Seven Angora wethers (average BW 24 +/- 2.5 kg) were implanted bilaterally with silicon catheters into the superficial branches of the deep circumflex iliac artery and vein and carotid artery. The experiment consisted of three 28-d phases. In the first 14 d of Phases 1 and 3, saline was infused into deep circumflex iliac arteries supplying skin and in Phase 2 a mixture of dipeptides (methionine-leucine [Met-Leu], lysine-leucine [Lys-Leu]) was infused into the artery on one side, and free amino acids were administered on the other side. Infusion rates of peptides were 0.85 mg/h Met-Leu and 0.85 mg/h Lys-Leu in 2.4 mL saline. Infusion rates of amino acids were 0.474 mg/h Lys, 0.483 mg/h Met, and 0.743 mg/h Leu in 2.4 mL saline. A 100-cm2 area within the perfused region was used to determine mohair growth. Two weeks after the cessation of infusions, perfused areas were shorn. Clean mohair production from the dipeptide- and amino acids-perfused regions were similar (4.21 vs 4.35 g/[100 cm2 +/- 28 d], respectively; P > 0.05). However, clean mohair production during dipeptides and amino acids infusions was greater (P < 0.01) than that observed during saline infusions (3.63 g/[100 cm2 +/- 28 d]). There were no significant differences between dipeptides and free amino acids in concentrations of various hormones and metabolites in blood from deep circumflex iliac veins (P > 0.05). In conclusion, the studied small dipeptides and amino acids similarly increased mohair fiber growth, presumably through supplying limiting amino acids directly to the fiber follicle.

Four trials were conducted to determine the effects of supplemental rumen-protected methionine (RPMet) and lysine (RPLys) on lamb N metabolism and steer feedlot performance. In trial 1, 20 Suffolk-sired, crossbred lambs (avg weight 32 kg) were fed diets containing no supplemental methionine (Met) and lysine (Lys), .03% RPMet, .05% RPLys or .03% RPMet + .05% RPLys. Lambs fed .03% RPMet + .05% RPLys had a 33% increase in N retention compared with lambs fed no supplemental Met and Lys. In trial 2, to verify the protection and availability of these amino acids, five Targhee lambs (avg weight 35 kg) were fed corn-soybran flake diets supplemented with urea and were assigned in a 5 X 5 Latin square to one of the following treatments: 1) control; 2) .03% RPMet + .05% RPLys offered in the diet; 3) .03% RPMet + .05% RPLys abomassally infused; 4) .03% non-protected Met + .05% non-protected Lys offered in the diet and 5) .03% Met + .05% Lys abomasally infused. Treatments 2, 3 and 5 decreased (P less than .05) urinary N (g/d) and increased N retention (P less than .05) compared with the control diet (treatment 1). Increases (P less than .05) in plasma Met and Lys concentrations indicated that the amino acids were protected and available for animals at the site of absorption. In trial 3, 40 crossbred Angus steers (avg weight 247 kg) were fed diets composed of 53% corn silage and 47% concentrate and supplemented with soybean meal to 11.3% crude protein. Steers that were fed diets containing .19% RPMet + .11% RPLys had greater daily gain (P less than .05) than those fed diets containing no supplemental amino acids, .11% RPMet + .01% RPLys, and .15% RPMet + .06% RPLys (1.39 vs 1.23, 1.22 and 1.20 kg/d, respectively). Similar improvements in feed conversion resulted and increases in plasma Met concentrations followed the same trend. In trial 4, 40 crossbred Angus steers (avg weight 368 kg) were fed corn grain-corn silage diets supplemented with urea. Treatments were: no supplemental amino acids; .05% RPMet + .01% RPLys; .10% RPMet + .04% RPLys; and .15% RPMet + .07% RPLys. No differences in steer performance resulted due to supplemental RPMet and RPLys (P greater than .05). The results of these trials suggest that the RPMet and RPLys used in this study are protected from ruminal degradation, are available post-ruminally and can improve lamb N balance and growing steer performance.

Metabolic demand for sulfur-containing AA increases during inflammation in nonruminants. Therefore, Met supplementation may alleviate the negative effects of infection on N balance. Effects of gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and supplemental dietary Met on N balance, serum hormones and haptoglobin, and plasma urea-N and AA were evaluated in 20 Angus-cross steers (BW = 262 +/- 6.3 kg). Treatments (2 x 2 factorial) were infusion of no LPS (-LPS) or a prolonged low dose of LPS (+LPS) and dietary supplementation of no (-MET) or 14 g/d (+MET) of rumen-protected Met (providing 7.9 g/d of dl-Met). Steers were adapted to a roughage-based diet (DMI = 1.4% of BW daily) and supplemental Met for 14 d, and were then infused (1 mL/min via intravenous catheter) with LPS on d 1 (2 microg/kg of BW) and 3 (1 microg/kg of BW) of a 5-d collection period. Blood was collected on d 1, before LPS infusion, and at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 24 h after LPS challenge. Diet samples, feed refusals, feces, and urine were collected daily for 5 d. Rectal temperature and serum concentrations of cortisol, prolactin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and haptoglobin increased, whereas thyroxine and triiodothyronine decreased for +LPS vs. -LPS steers (LPS x h; P < 0.01). Plasma urea-N was greater for +LPS than -LPS steers (LPS; P = 0.03), and serum IGF-1 was not affected (P > or = 0.26) by LPS or Met. Plasma concentrations of Thr, Lys, Leu, Ile, Phe, Trp, Asn, Glu, and Orn decreased, plasma Ala increased, and Gly and Ser initially increased, then declined in +LPS vs. -LPS steers (LPS x h; P < or = 0.04). Plasma Met was greater for +MET than -MET steers before LPS infusion, but declined in +MET steers after LPS infusion (LPS x Met x h; P < 0.01). By design, DMI was not different, but DM digested was less (P = 0.04) for +LPS than -LPS steers. Infusion of LPS did not affect (P > or = 0.24) N intake, fecal N excretion, or N digested, but resulted in greater (P < 0.01) urinary N excretion and less (P < 0.01) N retention. The absence of an LPS x Met interaction (P = 0.26) for N retention indicates that supplemental Met does not improve the N utilization of growing beef steers exposed to a gram-negative bacterial endotoxin. Decreases in plasma concentrations of several essential AA in +LPS steers suggest that metabolic demand for these AA likely increased in steers exposed to endotoxin.

Forty-eight Angora goats (24 wethers and 24 doelings; 5 mo old; 16 +/- 0.5 kg initial BW) were used in an experiment with a 2 x 3 factorial treatment arrangement (n = 8) to evaluate effects of recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST) administration and thyroid hormone status (euthyroid, hypothyroid, and hyperthyroid) on hormone levels, ADG, and mohair fiber growth. The bST was a slow-release zinc-based suspension, with sustained delivery (100 microg/[kg BW x d]) over a 14-d period. Hyperthyroidism was maintained by daily treatment with thyroxine (T4; 150 microg/[kg BW x d]), and hypothyroidism was achieved by feeding 6 mg/(kg BW x d) of propylthiouracil. The experiment was conducted in July to September and consisted of a 2-wk pretreatment period and 8 wk of bST treatment. Goats were given ad libitum access to a diet with 15% CP and 2.54 Mcal/ kg ME (DM basis). Concentrations of T4 and T3 were greatest (P < 0.01) among treatments for hyperthyroid-bST and hyperthyroid-control (T4: 38.6 and 38.0 microg/dL; T3: 406 and 385 ng/dL, respectively); similar among euthyroid-control, euthyroid-bST, and hypothyroid-bST (T4: 11.1, 11.5, and 9.8 microg/dL, respectively; T3: 232, 252, and 226 ng/dL, respectively); and lowest (P < 0.01) for hypothyroid-control (T4: 5.1 microg/dL; T3: 144 ng/dL). Plasma concentration of insulin-like growth factor-I was greatest (P < 0.01) for euthyroid-bST (596 ng/mL) and hypothyroid-bST (618 ng/mL); however, concentration for hyperthyroid-bST was similar to those for euthyroid-control, hypothyroid-control, and hyperthyroid-control (188, 178, 187, and 191 ng/mL, respectively). Dry matter intake was greatest (P < 0.05) for euthyroid-bST (794 g/d), similar among hypothyroid treatments (693 and 703 g/d for control and bST, respectively) and euthyroid-control (681 g/d), and lowest for hyperthyroid groups (554 and 518 g/d for control and bST, respectively); ADG for hyperthyroid goats (11 g/d) was lower than with hypothyroidism and euthyroidism (72 and 73 g/d, respectively); and mohair fiber growth was greater (P < 0.01) for hyperthyroidism (0.133 g/[100 cm2 x d]) than for hypothyroid and euthyroid goats (0.102 and 0.104 g/[100 cm2 x d], respectively). Hyperthyroidism also increased mohair length growth rate by 15% and decreased fiber diameter by 7.8% (P < 0.01). These results demonstrate interactions between growth hormone administration and thyroid hormone status, although these influences had limited effects on ADG and mohair fiber growth.

Four experiments were conducted in three separate years to test the utility of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to predict the clean mohair content of Angora goat fleece. Mohair fleece samples were obtained each year from yearling billies at the conclusion of the Angora Goat Performance Test conducted at the Texas A&M University Research Station, Sonora. In Exp. 1 (n = 293) and Exp. 2 (n = 256), fleeces were scanned with a Pacific Scientific (Silver Spring, MD) near-infrared spectrometer fitted with a fiber-optic probe, and calibrations were developed for clean mohair content. In Exp. 3, 59 mohair fleeces collected at the Texas A&M Research Station in San Angelo were sampled four times each. Each sample was scanned with the same spectrometer in reflectance mode fitted with a transport mechanism. This mechanism allowed the instrument to scan a 15-cm2 segment of the fleece sample. Conventional procedures to determine reference values for mohair yield, vegetable matter content, fiber diameter, and percentage of medullated and kemp fibers were conducted. Prediction equations were developed that related NIR spectra to reference values for yield and diameter parameters and were used to predict mohair characteristics for each fleece sample. The predicted and reference values were subjected to a simple analysis of variance to determine variation within and across samples. In Exp. 1, mohair base was related to NIR spectra with R2 = .46 and standard error of calibration (SEC) = 2.84%. In Exp. 2, similar repeatability errors for mohair base could be obtained for both reference- and NIRS-derived values. Fiber diameter and medullated fibers were poorly related to NIR spectra. When samples were scanned using the transport mechanism (Exp. 3), R2 and SEC were .82 and 1.19% for mohair base and .93 and .98 microm for fiber diameter, respectively. The CV for mohair base and diameter were 1.0 and 1.4%, whereas those for predicted mohair base and diameter were 1.4 and 3.4%, respectively. The increased variation within samples for predicted values represents sampling error and lack of fit between NIRS and the laboratory determined values. When the samples from Exp. 1 and 2 were rescanned with the NIRS transport (Exp. 4), R2 and SEC were .79 and 2.03% for mohair base and .52 and 3.49 microm for fiber diameter. The fiber optic probe would facilitate real-time analysis on the shearing floor, but our data indicate that the spectral limitations so far are too severe. A large sample device such as the transport gave excellent results for predicting mohair base and fiber diameter.

Twenty-four third- and fourth-parity crossbred gravid sows were housed in metabolism stalls and randomly allotted to four dietary treatments: corn-alfalfa:orchardgrass hay (46%; CH), CH plus lasalocid (CHL), corn-soybean meal (CS) or CS plus lasalocid (CSL). Daily feed intake was 2.36 kg for CH- and CHL-fed sows and 1.66 kg for CS- and CSL-fed sows. Lasalocid intake was 110 mg X sow-1 X d-1. Total feces and urine were collected during two 5-d collection periods, 40 and 80 d postcoitum. Digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), nitrogen (N) retention, dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibilities, and retention of calcium (Ca), total phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) were determined. Percentage DE and ME were greater (P less than .0001) for CS- and CSL-fed sows (88.3 and 83.4%) than for CH- and CHL-fed sows (65.2 and 61.3%). Lasalocid did not influence (P greater than .05) DE and ME values but decreased (P less than .01) the ME:DE ratio. Percentage N digestibility was greater (P less than .0001) for CS- and CSL-fed sows (85.7%) than for CH- and CHL-fed sows (60.8%), but there was no significant difference in N retention, expressed as a percentage of N intake. Lasalocid increased (P less than .03) percentage N digestibility; however, the diet X additive interaction decreased (P less than .005) grams N retained X sow-1 X d-1 for CSL-fed sows. The CH- and CHL-fed sows digested more grams of DM, NDF and ADF but had lower percentage digestibilities of DM and fiber fractions than did CS- and CSL-fed sows. The diet X additive interaction decreased (P less than .05) percentages of Ca, P and K digested and decreased (P less than .05) grams mineral retained (Ca, P, Mg and K) and mineral retained expressed as a percentage of intake for CSL-fed sows. Results indicate that alfalfa:orchardgrass hay and lasalocid influenced energy, fiber, nitrogen and mineral utilization by gravid sows.

Seven ruminally cannulated Holstein steers (194 +/- 16 kg) housed in metabolism crates were used in a 6 x 6 Latin square, with one additional steer, to study effects of ruminal ammonia load on methionine (Met) use. All steers received a diet based on soybean hulls (2.6 kg DM/d), ruminal infusions of 200 g/d of acetate, 200 g/d of propionate, and 50 g/d of butyrate, as well as abomasal infusion of 300 g/d of glucose to provide energy without increasing microbial protein supply, and abomasal infusions of a mixture (248 g/d) of all essential AA except Met. Treatments were arranged as a 3 x 2 factorial and included urea (0, 40, or 80 g/d) infused ruminally to supply metabolic ammonia loads and Met (2 or 5 g/d) infused abomasally. Supplementation with the greater amount of Met decreased (P < 0.05) urinary N excretion from 68.8 to 64.8 g/d and increased (P < 0.05) retained N from 22.0 to 27.5 g/d. Urea infusions linearly increased (P < 0.05) urinary N excretions, plasma urea concentrations, and urinary urea excretions, but retained N was not affected. The efficiency of deposition of supplemental Met, calculated by assuming that Met deposition is 2.0% of protein deposition (6.25 x retained N), ranged between 18 and 27% when steers received 0 or 80 g/d of urea, respectively. There were no (P > or = 0.40) effects of treatments on serum insulin or IGF-I concentrations. In our model, increasing ammonia load did not affect whole-body protein deposition in growing steers when Met was limiting.

Yearling Angora wethers (n = 24; 24+/-1.0 kg BW) were used in an experiment with a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments to investigate effects of bovine somatotropin (bST) treatment and dietary level of ruminally undegraded protein on DMI, ADG, and mohair production. Untreated casein (UC) or casein treated with formaldehyde (TC) was included at 7% DM of a diet containing 11% CP and 46% concentrate. A slow-release bST form was administered weekly to deliver 0 (Control) or 100 microg/ (kg BW.d) of bST. Plasma concentrations of bST and IGF-I were increased (P < .05) during the 7-d period following bST injection. Ruminal fluid ammonia N concentration was lower (P < .01) for TC than for UC before feeding (6.6 vs 7.5 mg/dL) and 4 h later (8.2 vs 12.2 mg/dL), and total VFA concentration was lower (P < .01) for TC than for UC. Treatment with bST decreased (P = .08) DMI with UC (1.15 vs .91 kg/d) and increased (P = .08) DMI with TC (.95 vs 1.06 kg/d). Formaldehyde treatment of casein increased ADG (65, 74, 55, and 91 g/d; P = .03) and clean fleece production (P < .01; 14.1, 17.3, 15.0, and 18.4 g/d for UC-Control, TC-Control, UC-bST, and TC-bST, respectively), with no effect of bST during the 8-wk period of treatment or for the 8 wk thereafter (P > .10). In conclusion, with yearling Angora wethers, bST does not seem useful to enhance mohair production and may not alter effects of dietary level of ruminally undegradable protein on mohair production.

An experiment was conducted to develop a system useful for measuring methionine requirements of growing steers. Seven ruminally cannulated steers (312 kg, gaining .91 kg/d) were fed a diet based on ammoniated corn cobs, corn starch, molasses and urea. Quantities of N and sulfur-containing amino acids disappearing from the small intestine were 96.0 and 14.8 g/d, respectively. Postruminal infusions of Na-caseinate (CAS) resulted in linear (P less than .01) increases in N retention with values increasing from 30.1 g/d with no postruminal CAS infusion to 39.3, 50.8 and 59.2 g/d (averaged across methionine supplementation) when 100, 200 and 300 g/d CAS were infused. Postruminal infusions of a mixture of crystalline L-amino acids (simulating the nonsulfur-containing essential amino acid pattern of casein; SIM) at levels of 100, 200 and 300 g/d also led to linear increases (P less than .01) in N retention with steers retaining 30.9, 38.9 and 50.5 g N/d (averaged across methionine supplementation), respectively. Postruminal infusion of 12 g/d L-methionine across CAS and SIM infusions improved (P less than .01) N retention by 7.6 g/d but infusion of SIM, which is devoid of sulfur amino acids, also increased N retention. Responses to methionine supplementation was greatest when 200 or 300 g/d SIM were abomasally infused. The data are interpreted to demonstrate that, for steers fed a diet containing little true protein, postruminal supplementation with nonsulfur-containing amino acids tended to increase the ability of growing steers to respond to methionine supplementation.

Two growth studies were conducted to determine the Met and Lys requirements of growing cattle. In each 84-d trial, steer calves were fed individually diets containing 44% sorghum silage, 44% corn cobs, and 12% supplement (DM basis) at an equal percentage of BW. In Trial 1, 95 crossbred steers (251 kg) were supplemented with urea or meat and bone meal (MBM). Incremental amounts of rumen-protected Met were added to MBM to provide 0, .45, .9, 1.35, 3, and 6 g/d metabolizable Met. In Trial 2, 60 steers (210 kg) were supplemented with urea or corn gluten meal (CGM). Incremental amounts of rumen-protected Lys were added to CGM to provide 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, and 10 g/d metabolizable Lys. Supplementation with MBM and CGM increased the supply of metabolizable protein to the animal. Steers fed MBM plus 0 Met gained 49 g/d more than steers fed urea, whereas steers fed CGM plus 0 Lys gained 150 g/d more than steers fed urea. Supplementation of rumen-protected Met and Lys improved ADG in steers fed MBM and CGM, respectively (P < .10). Nonlinear analysis, comparing gain vs supplemental Met and Lys intake, predicted supplemental Met and Lys requirements of 2.9 and .9 g/d, respectively. This amount of additional Met promoted .13 kg/ d gain greater than MBM alone, and this amount of additional Lys promoted .10 kg/d gain greater than the CGM alone. Metabolizable Met and Lys requirements were predicted from Level 1 of NRC (1996) calculated metabolizable protein supply, amino acid analysis of abomasal contents, and the maximum response to supplemental AA. Steers gaining .39 kg/d required 11.6 g/ d Met or 3. 1% of the metabolizable protein requirement, whereas steers gaining .56 kg/d required 22.5 g/d Lys or 5.7% of the metabolizable protein requirement.

Thirty primiparous sows were individually penned in a thermoneutral (20 degrees C) or hyperthermal (32 degrees C) environment and fed a high-starch (corn-soybean meal basal), high-fiber (48.5% wheat bran) or high-fat (10.6% choice white grease) diet from d 100 of gestation through a 22-d lactation to determine the effects of thermal environment and dietary energy source on energy and N digestibility in lactating sows. Voluntary feed intake and total feces and urine output were determined from d 12 through d 14 postpartum. Heat exposure (32 degrees C) depressed (P less than .05) voluntary feed, ME and N intake and lowered (P less than .05) apparent daily N retention. Heat exposure did not alter (P greater than .15) digestibility, expressed as percentage of intake, of dietary energy or N. Dietary additions of wheat bran depressed (P less than .05) the proportion of gross energy retained as ME by 12 and 14 percentage units and the apparent digestibility of N by 2.5 and 4.5 percentage units at 20 and 32 degrees C, respectively, compared with those of the basal diet. Dietary additions of choice white grease did not alter (P greater than .15) energy digestibility but increased (P less than .05) the proportion of N digested and retained in both environments. Apparent ME of the wheat bran, corn-soybean meal mix and choice white grease (determined by difference) was 2.72, 3.70 and 8.43 Mcal/kg DM and was independent of thermal environment. Digestibility of fibrous and starchy feedstuffs was similar in lactating sows and growing pigs allowed to consume feed ad libitum, whereas fat was more digestible in the sows.

Ten 2-yr-old Spanish wethers (58.2 +/- 7.21 kg BW) were used to determine effects of 2-d intravenous infusion of mimosine (beginning on January 8) on fiber shedding, follicle activity, and fiber regrowth. Primary and secondary follicle activity on d 0 were 43 +/- 6.2% and 96 +/- 1.7%, respectively. Five wethers were infused with mimosine at 120 mg/(kg BW x d) and the other five received saline. At 7 to 10 d after the start of infusion, all five goats infused with mimosine exhibited shedding, whereas shedding by controls was not observed. Cashmere fiber shedding score (5-point scale: 1 = no shedding, 5 = excessive shedding) on d 4 was greater for mimosine goats than for controls (1.2 vs 2.0; P < .001), and shedding score for wethers receiving mimosine was greater (P < .05) on d 12, 16, and 20 than on d 0 and 4 (4.1 to 4.6 vs 1.4 and 2.0). Guard hair shedding score for goats receiving mimosine was greatest (P < .01) among the days after infusion for d 12 and greater (P < .01) on d 16 than on d 0 and 4. Nonetheless, cashmere fiber yield from combed fleece of mimosine goats (average of 73%) was much greater than for a clipping of the uncombed side (average of 28%) when the cashmere fiber shedding score exceeded 4.0. Secondary follicle activity on d 12 was lower (P < .01) for mimosine than for control wethers (6.8 vs 67.7%), and secondary follicle activity for mimosine-infused goats on d 12 was lower (P < .01) than on d 0 (98.9%), 4 (98.3%), and 20 (99.5%). Mimosine infusion resulted in no detectable fiber regrowth in wk 4 to 7 after the start of infusion, but regrowth rate in the following two 4-wk periods was similar for mimosine and control wethers. In conclusion, 2-d intravenous infusion of mimosine at 120 mg/(kg BW x d) in the winter induced cashmere shedding but had less effect on guard hairs, suggesting future potential use of chemicals such as mimosine to remove cashmere fiber.

A 4 x 4 Latin square metabolism trial with 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was conducted with lambs to determine effects of energy and CP supplementation of wheat straw-based (WS) diets on apparent N digestion, retention, and flow to the abomasum. Four wether lambs (average weight, 32 kg) fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulas were fed 70 vs 42% WS (remainder of the diet was concentrate) and 9.5 vs 12.5% CP. Ruminal and total tract DM and OM digestion was 41 and 33% greater (P less than .03) for high-energy than for low-energy diets. Apparent N digestibility was greater (P less than .05) for 12.5% CP than for 9.5% CP diets (69.2 vs 62.0%, respectively) and also greater (P less than .03) for high-energy than for low-energy diets (67.4 vs 63.7%, respectively). High-energy diets resulted in a 23% greater (P less than .03) N retention (percentage of N intake) than did low-energy diets; 12.5% CP diets resulted in a 9% greater N retention (P less than .10) than did 9.5% CP diets. Nitrogen retention (percentage of N digested) was 15% higher (P less than .03) for high-energy than for low-energy diets. Protein level had no effect (P greater than .10). Nitrogen retention (grams/day) was 5.65, 6.97, 5.28, and 7.43 for low-energy, high-energy, low-protein, and high-protein diets, respectively; there were responses to energy level (P less than .03) and protein level (P less than .05). Total N flow (grams/day) to the abomasum did not differ (P greater than .10) due to treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Two completely randomized design experiments were conducted, using either 10, 38-kg (Exp. 1) or 10, 26-kg (Exp. 2) Hampshire x Western wether lambs, to study the effects of alpha-ketoglutarate (AKG) administration on N metabolism. Lambs were fed 890 and 885 g DM/d in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively, of corn-cottonseed hull basal diets with urea added to attain CP levels of 10.6 and 10.5% in Exp. 1 and 2, respectively. Experiments consisted of 10 d of adaptation followed by 7 d of infusion and excreta collection. Lambs were infused continuously either i.v. (Exp. 1) or abomasally (Exp. 2) with control solutions (CON) or solutions containing 41.3 g AKG/d (AKG). In Exp. 1, fecal and urinary N excretion and N retention were not affected (P greater than .10) by treatment. Compared to CON in Exp. 2, AKG infusion increased (P less than .10) fecal N output (6.6 vs 5.9 g N/d) but did not affect (P greater than .10) the amount of N retained (4.4 vs 3.5 g N/d). Compared to CON, AKG increased (P less than .10) urinary NH3 N excretion in Exp. 1. Serum urea N was lower (P greater than .10) for AKG than for CON in Exp. 1 but was not affected (P greater than .10) by treatment in Exp. 2. In Exp. 1, AKG appeared to reduce activities of several serum enzymes that function in amino N metabolism. In Exp. 1, compared to CON, AKG decreased (P less than .10) aspartate but increased (P less than .10) asparagine in serum.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
