Cyproheptadine hydrochloride was administered to 20 presumed or proven allergic cats to determine its efficacy in controlling pruritus. Each cat received 2 mg, orally, every 12 h. The pruritus was satisfactorily controlled in 9 cats. Side effects were seen in 8 cats, and included polyphagia, sedation, vocalization, affectionate behavior, and vomiting.  相似文献

A combination of niacinamide and tetracycline was used to treat 31 dogs with various autoimmune skin diseases (discoid lupus erythematosus, pemphigus foliaceus, pemphigus erythematosus, and bullous pemphigoid). Of the 20 dogs with discoid lupus erythematosus, 70% had excellent or good response to treatment. Serious side effects were not noticed in any dog.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of long-term treatment with tetracycline and niacinamide on antibody production in dogs by measuring postvaccinal serum concentrations of antibodies against canine parvovirus and canine distemper virus. ANIMALS: 10 dogs receiving long-term treatment with tetracycline and niacinamide (treatment group) and 10 healthy dogs (control group). PROCEDURE: The treatment group included 9 dogs with discoid lupus erythematosus and 1 dog with pemphigus foliaceus on long-term treatment (> 12 months) with tetracycline and niacinamide. The control group included 10 healthy dogs with no clinical signs of disease and no administered medications for the past 3 months. Blood samples were obtained from all dogs by jugular venipuncture. Serum antibody titers against canine parvovirus and canine distemper virus antigens were measured, using hemaglutination inhibition and serum neutralization, respectively, and compared between groups. RESULTS: A significant difference in antibody titers between treatment- and control-group dogs was not found. All dogs had protective antibody titers against canine distemper virus, and 8 of 10 dogs from each group had protective titers against canine parvovirus infection. CONCLUSION AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results provide evidence that long-term treatment with tetracycline and niacinamide does not interfere with routine vaccinations and thus does not seem to influence antibody production in dogs.  相似文献

Terfenadine (5 mg/kg body weight, q12h) and placebo (0.5 grain/dog q12h) were both administered orally as individual agents to 18 dogs with atopy in a double-blinded study. No dog improved. Hyperactivity, polyphagia, lethargy, anorexia, increased pruritus, or ocular discharge were seen in three dogs treated with terfenadine. Under the conditions of the study, terfenadine was not a useful antipruritic agent for the atopic dog.  相似文献

An in-office allergy screening kit was evaluated for its repeatability, sensitivity, and specificity in 21 atopic dogs. Results of this testing were compared with results of a full regionalized allergy test offered by the same manufacturer. Results of the screening kit were repeatable and had high specificity but poor sensitivity. The kit as presently marketed is of questionable value as a diagnostic aid for use in dogs with atopy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine cross-reactivity of aeroallergens in Colorado and surrounding states by evaluating concurrent positive reactions of related and nonrelated allergens of intradermal tests in dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: Intradermal test results of 268 atopic dogs. PROCEDURE: A retrospective evaluation of skin test results for 268 dogs was performed. Pairs of closely related and nonrelated allergens were evaluated. Group 1 consisted of closely related allergens with demonstrated antibody cross-reactivity in humans. In group 2, allergens of the same plant group (ie, trees, grasses, or weeds) that were not closely related were paired. In group 3, allergen pairs were of different plant groups. Plant allergens were paired with dust mite allergens, animal dander, or mold spores in group 4. In the last group, allergens not derived from plants were paired. Data were evaluated twice by use of a different definition of a positive reaction. Significance of the difference between group means of log odds ratios was estimated by use of a boot-strap percentile confidence interval. RESULTS: Significant differences in the number of concurrent positive reactions were not found between related versus nonrelated grass, weed, or tree allergens. Significant differences in the number of concurrent positive reactions were found between plant allergens of different groups (ie, grasses, weeds, and trees) and plant allergens of the same groups, related or nonrelated, as well as between plant-derived and nonplant-derived allergens. Many dogs reacting to a specific allergen did not react to a closely related allergen at the same time. CONCLUSION: These results provide evidence against clinically relevant cross-reactivity and suggest that allergen-specific immunotherapy should be formulated on the basis of single allergen test results.  相似文献

Effect of hyposensitization on atopic dermatitis in dogs   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
In a double-blind study, 51 dogs with clinically defined atopic dermatitis were injected with either alum-precipitated allergen solutions or a placebo. Comparing the treatment results of both groups on the basis of scores for clinical signs, a significant difference in clinical improvement was established in favor of the allergen-treated dogs (P less than 0.01). The proportional changes of scores for clinical signs in the allergen-treated group ranged between +27.3% and -100% (median, -61.5%) and in the placebo group between +36.4% and -100% (median, 0.0%) with respect to the initial scores. Immediate skin test reactivity disappeared only in the dogs with a good clinical response. Of 27 dogs treated with an allergen solution, 16 (59.3%) had an improvement of 51% or more. In the placebo group, 5 of 24 dogs (20.8%) reacted this way. There was total remission of the clinical signs in 9 and 4 dogs, respectively. In the dogs in which, after 9 months of hyposensitization, any improvement was observed, the chance for final improvement of more than 51% was calculated as 84%. Discriminant analysis revealed that evaluation of the effect of immunotherapy can be restricted to the 9-month follow-up examination.  相似文献

Abstract— A brief review of the literature on various aspects of demodicosis in dogs is followed by a suggested pathogenesis. Some of the effects of Demodex on hosts other than dogs are then mentioned. Reasons why Demodex canis is easily destroyed in vitro but not in vivo are put forward. Semen was obtained from eight mongrels and 17 purebred dogs kept in a tropical climate. The mean spermatozoal output per ejaculate was 303.6 +/- 138.2 and 602.9 +/- 466.2 million, respectively. Values for individual progressive motility, live and abnormal spermatozoa were comparable with those obtained in temperate regions. The pathology of tracheal collapse in dogs is described. Ten dogs were studied and in all cases there was macroscopic and histological evidence of flattening of the tracheal cartilage and peripheral lung disease. It was considered that the essential lesion was a removal of organic matrix from the cartilage. It was thought that this was probably congenital in origin but required the presence of concurrent lung disease as a triggering factor before clinical signs developed.  相似文献

In humans, skin barrier dysfunction is thought to be responsible for enhanced penetration of allergens. Similar to conditions seen in humans, canine atopic dermatitis (CAD) is characterized by derangement of corneocytes and disorganization of intercellular lipids in the stratum corenum (SC) with decreased ceramide levels. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of a moisturizer containing ceramide on dogs with CAD. Dogs (n = 20, 3~8 years old) with mild to moderate clinical signs were recruited and applied a moisturizer containing ceramide for 4 weeks. Transepidermal water loss (TEWL), skin hydration, pruritus index for canine atopic dermatitis (PICAD) scores, and canine atopic dermatitis extent and severity index (CADESI) scores of all dogs were evaluated. Skin samples from five dogs were also examined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM) using ruthenium tetroxide. TEWL, PICAD, and CADESI values decreased (p < 0.05) and skin hydration increased dramatically over time (p < 0.05). Electron micrographs showed that the skin barrier of all five dogs was partially restored (p < 0.05). In conclusion, these results demonstrated that moisturizer containing ceramide was effective for treating skin barrier dysfunction and CAD symptoms.  相似文献

Thirty dogs with a clinical diagnosis of atopy were skin tested with 58 allergens including an aqueous house dust mite extract and a crude house dust extract. Sixty percent of the dogs had positive skin reactions to both the house dust mite and house dust antigens. Changes in the plasma concentrations of cortisol were recorded in 5–6 weeks-old lambs during the first 480 minutes after surgical castration and tailing in order to define the full post-treatment cortisol response and to determine whether or not the handling associated with repeated blood sampling delayed the return of cortisol concentrations to pretreatment values. Four groups of six or seven lambs were studied: One group was bled regularly throughout the 480 minutes of the study, and in the other three post-treatment blood sampling began at 90, 240 or 480 minutes. Plasma cortisol concentrations increased after treatment and returned to or approached pretreatment values by 480 minutes. No significant differences in mean cortisol concentrations were observed between the groups at any stage. It is concluded that the acute distress response of these lambs to surgical castration and tailing lasted about 8 hours and that repeated handling for blood sampling did not contribute significantly to this distress.  相似文献

Pleural effusion was induced in 12 dogs by ligation of the cranial vena cava. Pleurodesis was attempted by injecting a solution of tetracycline hydrochloride into the pleural space of 8 dogs (4 dogs, 25 mg/kg of body weight; 4 dogs, 50 mg/kg) via bilateral thoracostomy tubes. In both groups, tetracycline was diluted in 40 ml of normal saline solution and 10 ml of 1% lidocaine before injection. Half of the solution (25 ml) was instilled in each hemithorax. Four control dogs were treated in the same manner with a solution of normal saline and lidocaine. Daily pleural fluid production was measured after the attempted pleurodesis. Thirty days after administration of the solution, each dog was euthanatized and necropsied. Surface area of pleural adhesions was measured. Tissues from regions of pleural adhesions and areas of parietal and visceral pleura not involved in adhesions were analyzed histologically. Formation of pleural fluid stopped in all but 1 control dog within 48 hours after injection of solution. This dog effused throughout the study. The resolution of effusion was not significantly (P less than 0.05) different between the tetracycline-treated dogs and the control group. Although diffuse pleural adhesions were not induced in any of the dogs, significantly (P less than 0.0027) more surface area of lung was adhered in dogs treated with the higher dose of tetracycline.  相似文献
