Host determinants of pneumonia in slaughter weight swine   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A prospective cohort study was undertaken in a farrow-to-farrow swine herd to describe patterns of pneumonia, and to identify host risk factors associated with the extent of pneumonic lesions in 2 weight groups of slaughter swine. The risk of coughing and pneumonic lesions increased with increasing age of pigs within the herd (P less than 0.0001). The age-specific prevalence of pneumonic lesions was low (2.7%) in pigs less than 16 weeks old at slaughter, but increased rapidly when pigs were between 16 and 22 weeks old (8.6 to 67.9%). After 22 weeks, the prevalence remained relatively constant at about 80%. Associations between possible risk factors and pneumonia were investigated by use of multiple-regression models. Age at weaning (less than 24 days) and birth weight (less than 1 kg) exerted small, but significant (P less than 0.002), effects on the extent of pneumonic lesions in pigs slaughtered at 30 to 50 kg live weight. For pigs slaughtered at 90 to 110 kg, pneumonic lesions were more extensive (P = 0.007) in pigs sired by Yorkshire boars than pigs sired by non-Yorkshire sires (Duroc, Hampshire, Chester White, or American Spotted). Other host factor variables including weaning weight and clinical diseases (atrophic rhinitis, diarrhea, and arthritis) were not associated with pneumonia extent in either weight group. Higher pneumonia percentages were also associated with reduced growth rates in the grower/finisher phase. Pigs sired by Yorkshire boars grew significantly (P less than 0.0001) more slowly from entry into shed 2 (mean, 38 kg) until about the time of exit (mean, 92 kg) than pigs sired by other breeds (747 g/d and 795 g/d, respectively).  相似文献

Three slaughter checks were performed for each of 21 swine producers at 6-month intervals. Two slaughter checks were performed during the winter, and 1 slaughter check was performed during the summer. Lesions of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were evaluated during the slaughter checks. Two types of farrowing facilities and 4 types of grower/finisher facilities were used by the swine producers. Lesions of atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia were compared among seasons and among types of facilities. Lesions of both atrophic rhinitis and pneumonia varied with season. Lesions of atrophic rhinitis were more severe among hogs slaughtered in the summer, whereas lesions of pneumonia were more severe among hogs slaughtered in the winter. Lesions of atrophic rhinitis were more severe in hogs farrowed in central, enclosed farrowing houses and finished in enclosed, mechanically ventilated buildings than in hogs farrowed individually in sow huts and finished on dirt lots. Knowledge of disease patterns associated with season and facilities is useful for assessment of herd health status and for implementation of control programs.  相似文献

A total of 855 pig lungs were collected at slaughter and evaluated macroscopically. Bacteriological examinations were carried out on tissue samples from chronic pleuropneumonic lesions (n = 196) and from chronic bronchopneumonic lesions with suppuration (n = 14). Samples from normal lung tissue (n = 22) were also included. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 54%, Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae from 11%, and Streptococcus spp. from 14% of the pneumonic lesions, respectively. From normal lung tissue P. multocida was isolated from 3 (14%) of the samples, A. pleuropneumoniae was not recovered and streptococci were isolated from only 1 (5%) of these samples. The above mentioned bacterial species were recovered either in pure cultures or mixed with various other microbes. A total of 109 P. multocida strains were further characterized by capsular serotyping and testing for production of dermonecrotic toxin. Ninety-nine (91%) of the strains were capsular type A 10 (9%) were type D. Out of the type A and the type D strains 94% and 90% were toxigenic, respectively. Most of the A. pleuropneumoniae strains were serotype 2. Strains of serotypes 1 and 7 were also identified. The majority of the streptococci were identified as either Streptococcus suis or Streptococcus dysgalactiae. Actinomyces pyogenes was isolated from 14% of the lesions and anaerobic bacteria from 18%, respectively. The significance of the various bacterial species in relation to the development of chronic pneumonic lesions is discussed. Special attention is paid to P. multocida, and it is concluded that this bacterial species is probably of importance for the development of both types of chronic pneumonias.  相似文献

Pneumonia in swine has been studied mainly at slaughter or necropsy. However, when performing slaughter or postmortem examinations, assessment of the true prevalence or lifetime extent of pneumonia is at best speculative. Radiography was used to evaluate lungs from pigs 21 to 150 days old. Follow-up slaughter examination was performed on pigs 180 days old. Individual percentage of pneumonia observed over the life of each pig and at slaughter were added to yield lifetime pneumonia scores. A significant (P = 0.0001) negative effect of lifetime pneumonia on growth rate was found. By comparison, slaughter examination proved to be a poor indicator of lifetime pneumonia; lesions were found to progress and regress dynamically throughout the life of pigs.  相似文献

Lancefield group R streptococci associated with pneumonia in swine   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
During a 12-month survey of streptococcal infections in swine, 14 of 98 isolates were found to belong to Lancefield group R. Most of these isolates were from pigs with pneumonia. Approximately half the group R isolates were associated with concurrent Pasteurella pneumonia.  相似文献

Four hundred and sixty-two pigs from 37 herds were examined at slaughter for the presence and extent of turbinate atrophy and pneumonia. Turbinate atrophy was scored by measuring the mm space between the turbinate bone and the floor of the nasal cavity on both sides of the nasal septum. The total percentage of pneumonic involvement for each lung was evaluated by scoring the percentage of each lobe that was consolidated.

There was a low, positive correlation between individual scores of turbinate atrophy and the associated percentage of lung involved with pneumonia (r = + 0.177; p < 0.001). There was a postive correlation between the herd mean turbinate atrophy score and the herd mean percentage pneumonia score (r = + 0.515; p = 0.001).

The age at slaughter was known for 95 pigs from four herds and was not significantly correlated with the mm of turbinate atrophy, or the percentage of pneumonia.

Lungs from 191 slaughter pigs with gross lesions indicative of enzootic pneumonia of pigs (EPP) and 80 grossly normal lungs, all originating from 9 different herds, were subjected to microbiological and pathological examinations. The microbiological studies included both bacterial and mycoplasmal culture and also testing for Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae antigen in tissue by indirect immunofluorescent technique. M. hyopneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida and Mycoplasma hyorhinis were detected in 83%, 43% and 37% of the pneumonic lungs, respectively. Mycoplasma flocculare was the most frequently isolated organism in the non-pneumonic lungs. The greatest amounts of macroscopic pneumonia (25.2%) were recorded in lungs with all the three agents M. hyopneumoniae, P. multocida and M. hyorhinis present. The amounts of pneumonia in lungs with M. hyopneumoniae alone and in concurrence with P. multocida, were 9.3% and 15.6%, respectively. M. hyorhinis was also, in this study, associated with higher frequency of diffuse pleuritis. These findings indicate that M. hyorhinis might be involved in the pathogenesis of pneumonia in slaughter pigs. Ninety-six per cent of the isolates of P. multocida from pneumonic lungs could be characterized as type A. In the herds which had the most severe pneumonia problems, toxin production was detected in 83% of the P. multocida strains while only 28% were toxigenic in herds with subclinical to moderate pneumonia problems.  相似文献

The prevalence and pathomorphology of gross lung lesions were studied in 855 slaughter weight pigs from 9 selected herds in south-eastern Norway. Pneumonic or pleuritic lesions were found in 84% of the lungs, ranging from 37% in the least affected herd to 97% in the one most affected. Bronchopneumonia indicative of a primary Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection was found in 70% of the lungs, ranging from 9% to 82% in the individual herds. The amount of bronchopneumonic lesions in individual lungs ranged from 0 to 69%, with an average of 7.8%. Pleuropneumonia indicative of Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae infection was found in 29% of the lungs ranging from 0 in the least affected herd to 58% in the most affected. Diffuse pleuritis was found in 41% of the lungs and the prevalence ranged from 4% to 63%.  相似文献

Blood samples from 777 pigs, originating from 9 different herds, were collected at slaughter and examined for antibodies to Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae by the indirect hemagglutination assay (IHA) and the complement fixation (CF) test, respectively. Results were compared to pathological and microbiological findings. Antibodies to M. hyopneumoniae in positive titers of 1/80 or higher were found in 62% of the samples. The relationship between positive IHA titers to M. hyopneumoniae and gross findings indicative of enzootic pneumonia of pigs (EPP), histological findings indicative of EPP, the isolation of M. hyopneumoniae and the demonstration of M. hyopneumoniae by indirect immunofluorescent testing ranged from 64% to 68%. No correlation was noted between positive IHA titers and the isolation of Mycoplasma flocculare. Positive antibody titers to A. pleuropneumoniae of 1/10 or higher were detected in 5% to 85% of the samples from individual herds. Positive titers to A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 were found in 71% to 79% of the sampled animals from herds with high frequencies of pneumonic lesions indicative of pleuropneumonia. In herds with low frequencies of pleuropneumonia, positive titers were recorded in from 0 to 4% of the tested pigs. However, no statistical association was found between pleuropneumonia and positive titers to A. pleuropneumoniae serotype 2 in individual animals. Twenty-one per cent of samples with positive CF titers to A. pleuropneumoniae showed antibodies to more than one serotype.  相似文献

The same computerized recording system as described in Part I of this publication (Flesjå & Ulvesœter 1979) was applied to sows slaughtered at Sentralslakteriet, Forus, Stavanger. In the three-year period 1975–1977 a total of 10,051 apparently healthy sows were brought to the abattoir. About 17 % of the carcasses had one or more pathological lesions. Of the total number of lesions 89 % were confined to 18 of the available 57 disease codes. Pyaemia and abscess/-es occurred at a rate of 1.5 and 3.2 %, respectively. This comprised 21 % of all registered lesions. Scabies and numerous white liver spots came to another 21 %, occurring in 3.3 and 1.5 % of the animals, respectively. About 15 % were chest lesions, of which pleurisy was diagnosed in 1.4 % and pericarditis in 1.3 % of the slaughtered sows. Other lesions recorded in 1 % or more included perihepatitis and other non-parasitic liver lesions, arthritis and decubitus.Only code 31 — numerous white spots in the liver showed a convincing seasonal variation.Significantly higher frequencies of pyaemia and abscess/-es occurred in culled sows than in baconers, but no such difference could be found for peritonitis, polyarthritis and arthritis. For all other commonly observed lesions significantly lower frequencies were seen in sows compared to baconers.Various theories are suggested to explain the observed difference in the distribution of lesions between baconers and sows.  相似文献

A rapid gross visual appraisal of enzootic pneumonia lesions was made of 87 lungs at a local abattoir and the lungs were then set aside and examined in more detail. A sample of pulmonary tissue was taken from each lung and submitted for bacterial and histological examination. The principal investigator who had performed the gross and detailed lung scores was then used to assess the agreement of two inspectors who were scoring lung lesions in the abattoir. The Pearson's correlation coefficient between grossly scored lungs and scores derived from a detailed examination was 0.94. Using histological examination as the gold standard, rapid gross examination had a sensitivity of 76% and a specificity of 71%. Using bacterial recovery as a gold standard yielded a sensitivity of 77% and a specificity of 51%. The sensitivity and specificity of inspectors 1 and 2 compared to the principal investigator were: sensitivity = 97.5% and specificity = 97.4% for inspector 1, and 97% and 98% for inspector 2. The kappa values for both of the inspectors compared to the principal investigator were 0.95 suggesting that designated lay inspectors consistently agreed with the principal investigator.  相似文献

A prospective cohort study was undertaken in a commercial swine herd to determine the relationship between weight gain and the occurrence of enzootic pneumonia (EP). Estimates of the association between EP and weight gain were obtained from multiple linear regression models, using coughing episodes or slaughter checks as indicators of EP status. Models were estimated for pigs in 2 different age groups: roasters (n = 1084, sold at 32 to 50 kg) and market hogs (n = 1162, sold at 100 to 110 kg). The relationship between presence of lung lesions at slaughter and previous coughing episodes was also investigated. Throughout the study period, clinical evaluations were performed weekly, and coughing episodes recorded for each pig. Lungs were inspected at slaughter, and scores were expressed as the percentage of the lung with gross pneumonic lesions. Coughing and lung scores were significantly correlated, after adjusting for other covariates (R = 0.32 and 0.59, respectively, for market hogs and roasters). However, the agreement beyond chance between coughing history and lung lesions at slaughter was poor among both roasters and market hogs (kappa = 0.17 and 0.07, respectively). Although very specific, weekly assessment of coughing was not a sensitive indicator of lung lesions at slaughter. In multiple regression, lung score was a highly significant predictor of lower final weight in pigs of both age groups (P < 0.001 in the selected regression models).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献
