Impotence in bulls due to vascular shunts from the corpus cavernosum penis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Eleven bulls were determined to be impotent due to vascular shunts from the corpus cavernosum penis to the extracorporeal circulation. Clinically, the bulls were unable to achieve erection when stimulated with an electroejaculator and in natural breeding trials. The vascular shunts were located by serial contrast radiography of the corpus cavernosum penis. Surgical correction of the shunts was attempted in 8 of the bulls by wedge resection of the tunica albuginea. In 4 bulls, the surgical correction was successful and the bulls were returned to service.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of a shunt created between the corpus cavernosum penis (CCP) and corpus spongiosum penis (CSP) on erectile and ejaculatory function of normal stallions and to verify persistence of the shunt. STUDY DESIGN: The capability of stallions to develop an erection and to ejaculate was evaluated before and after creation of a corporeal shunt. Persistence of the shunt was determined by dye injection into the CCP at necropsy. ANIMALS: Six stallions. METHODS: A CCP-CSP shunt was created in five stallions. Semen was collected before and 4 to 14 weeks after surgery, before the horses were euthanatized. Dye was injected into the CCP to determine persistence of the shunt. Dye was also injected into the CCP of a control stallion. RESULTS: All stallions had normal erectile and ejaculatory function before and after surgery. Dye, injected into the CCP, entered the CSP in three of five treated stallions, demonstrating persistence of the shunt, whereas in two stallions, dye was found only in the CCP, indicating closure of the shunt. No dye was detected in the CSP of the control stallion. CONCLUSIONS: Creation of a corporeal shunt does not interfere with normal erection and ejaculation of stallions. Shunt closure is not necessary for stallions to retain normal erectile and ejaculatory function. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Failure of a stallion affected by priapism to achieve normal erection or to ejaculate after creation of a corporeal shunt would likely be because of damage to corporeal tissue than from an effect of the shunt.  相似文献

Penile haematomas, lying outside the tunica albuginea, were found in six bulls of various breeds, aged one-and-a-half to nine-and-three-quarter years. In five cases the haematomas definitely arose from rupture of the dorsal or crural canal and tunica albuginea of the corpus cavernosum penis (ccp) within the proximal 12 cm of the penile body. In the sixth bull, lesions of the tunica albuginea and distortion of the penis just proximal to the proximal bend of the sigmoid flexure may have represented the site of rupture. There was no evidence of rupture at the distal bend of the sigmoid flexure or of rupture of the dorsal penile vessels in any of these specimens. In all six specimens, the dorsal canals of the ccp were occluded by translucent fibrous tissue distal to the sites of rupture; this was considered to be the factor immediately predisposing to proximal rupture of the ccp. Clinically, a small haematoma in the perineal region is difficult or impossible to palpate externally. However, when the haematoma of proximal origin is large, differentiation from rupture at the distal bend of the sigmoid flexure may be based tentatively on a careful clinical examination. In cases of proximal rupture the haematoma lies caudal and dorsal to the scrotum and no abnormality of the distal bend may be palpable. In cases of distal rupture, the haematoma usually lies cranial to the scrotum and involves the distal bend of the flexure. Severe disruption of the vascular structure is found in cases of proximal rupture of the ccp; therefore the prognosis is grave.  相似文献

Neural regulation of the bovine corpus luteum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The ovarian noradrenergic stimulation or noradrenaline (NA) administration directly to the ovary in cow increases ovarian oxytocin (OT) release and post-translational processing of OT synthesis within a few minutes has been established in both in vivo and in vitro studies. Furthermore, NA affects progesterone secretion and its synthesis by an increase of cytochrome P450scc and 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity. This effect is mediated via luteal cell beta(1)- and beta(2)-receptors. Their total amount correlates with peripheral progesterone concentrations during the luteal phase and this reflects the ability of the ovary to react to beta-stimulation. On the other hand, ovarian denervation causes a decrease of steroidogenic activity in the CL, an increase of beta-receptors on luteal cells, a delay in follicular development and the disruption of cyclicity. Moreover, decrease of progesterone secretion by 20-30% was seen after brief pharmacological blockade of ovarian beta-receptors in the mid-cycle of cattle. We assume that tonic beta-stimulation of the CL ensures the basal secretion of progesterone, whereas acute noradrenergic activation supports the CL during stressful situations which could impair its function. Conversely, long-lasting increase in blood catecholamine concentrations markedly decreases the number of beta-receptors in CL, presumably due to their down-regulation. Concentrations of dopamine (DA) within the CL are highly correlated with those of NA during the estrous cycle, and are higher in the newly-formed than in the developed corpus luteum, the regressed corpus luteum or the corpus luteum of pregnant females. Bovine CL can synthesise de novo NA from DA as a precursor. Concluding, presented data indicate that noradrenergic stimulation can be an important part of mechanism supporting secretory function of CL.  相似文献

Cranial superficial epigastric (milk vein) and jugular venous blood pressure were measured in 8 cows with udder edema and in 3 normal control cows at least 2 weeks before parturition, at parturition, and 2 weeks after parturition. Cows with udder edema had a significant mean increase (P less than or equal to 0.05) in cranial superficial epigastric venous pressure at parturition when compared with pressures 2 weeks prepartum and 2 weeks postpartum. Unaffected control cows had an insignificant increase in cranial superficial epigastric venous pressure during these 3 periods of measurement. There was an insignificant increase in jugular venous blood pressure during the 3 periods of measurement in affected and control cows. A correlation was observed between mammary blood flow and cranial superficial epigastric blood pressure at parturition (r = -0.659, P less than or equal to 0.05).  相似文献

Partial phallectomy or en bloc resection are surgical methods to address pathological conditions of the penis and/or prepuce including neoplasia, trauma, habronemiasis, chronic paraphimosis or permanent penile paralysis, and priapism. Haemorrhage associated with urination is a common complication observed after penile surgery but usually resolves spontaneously without specific treatment. This report describes a case of post urination haemorrhage (PUH) that recurred with each urination and persisted without significant improvement for a period of 2 weeks following en bloc resection of the penis and the prepuce. A perineal incision (PI) into the corpus spongiosum of the penis (CSP) resolved PUH by decreasing the blood pressure in the CSP distal to the PI. We propose that PI of the CSP can be an effective method to address PUH after penile surgery and may decrease time of hospitalisation for horses affected with PUH after phallectomy procedures.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine whether active metabolites of phytoestrogens (equol and para-ethyl-phenol) inhibit sensitivity of bovine corpus luteum (CL) to luteinizing hormone (LH) and to auto/paracrine luteotropic factors (prostaglandin E2-PGE2 and prostaglandin F(2alpha)-PGF(2alpha)), and whether they influence pulsatile progesterone (P4) secretion by the bovine CL. In in vivo experiments, high levels of equol and para-ethyl-phenol were found in plasma and in the CL tissue of heifers and cows fed a soy bean diet (2.5 kg/animal/day), along with lower concentrations of P4 (P < 0.05). Both Prostaglandins (PG) and LH strongly stimulated P4 secretion in cultured pieces of CL that were collected from cows fed a standard diet (P < 0.01). There was no effect of PGs and LH on P4 stimulation in CLs obtained from cows fed a diet rich in soy bean. Finally, we examined whether active metabolites of phytoestrogens participated in regulation of pulsatile P4 secretion and LH-stimulated P4 secretion in vitro using a microdialysis system. Equol and para-ethyl-phenol had no effect on basic and pulsatile P4 secretion in CLs during 240 min of perfusion when compared to the control (P < 0.05). However, they inhibited LH-stimulated P4 secretion (P < 0.05). Phytoestrogens and their metabolites may disrupt CL function by inhibiting PG- and LH-stimulated P4 secretion.  相似文献

Seven hundred and six bovine corpora lutea in various luteal stages were examined morphologically and endocrinologically to discover whether there is a relationship between the presence of a central cavity in the corpus luteum and infertility in cows. A central cavity was found in 42.1 per cent (80/190) of developing corpora lutea, 33.7 per cent (126/374) of fully developed corpora lutea, 11.1 per cent (7/63) of corpora lutea in regression and in 5.1 per cent (4/79) of corpora lutea in pregnancy. There was no significant difference between the rates of appearance of midcycle follicles in corpora lutea either with or without a central cavity. The proportion of luteal cell type 1 was higher in fully developed corpora lutea with a central cavity than without, but the reverse was found with luteal cell type 2. In fully developed corpora lutea the concentration of progesterone in the luteal tissue was significantly higher in corpora lutea with a central cavity. These results suggest that there are some differences in luteal function between corpora lutea with and without a central cavity, but that the presence of a central cavity in a corpus luteum cannot be described as a pathological condition.  相似文献
