Ultrasonographic examination of both adrenal glands was performed in 15 dogs with functional adrenocortical tumors (FAT). Bilateral adrenal tumors were diagnosed in three of 15 dogs, and unilateral tumors were diagnosed in 12 of 15 dogs. Adrenal tumors were characterized by adrenal gland enlargement with loss of the normal shape and parenchymal structure. The contralateral adrenal gland could be imaged in all dogs with unilateral tumors. Based on size, shape, and parenchymal structure, the contralateral adrenal gland was similar to adrenal glands of normal dogs. The results of this study show that: 1) both adrenal glands should be imaged routinely in dogs with hyperadrenocorticism; 2) bilateral adrenocortical tumors seem to be more frequent than previously assumed; 3) one normal adrenal gland does not exclude the existence of a contralateral FAT; and 4) the functional atrophy of the contralateral adrenal gland in dogs with FAT may not be apparent ultrasonographically.  相似文献

Adrenal cortical epithelial tumours are common in ferrets. A variant tumour type with prominent spindle cell proliferation has been identified. We characterized these variant tumours with light microscopy and immunohistochemical analysis and correlate these features to clinical parameters and prognosis. We classified 24 ferret adrenal cortical masses with recognizable spindle cell proliferation obtained from the AMC and AFIP databases, based on percentage of spindle cells present and features of malignancy. These masses were separated into hyperplastic nodules and adenomas (both with 1–24% spindle cells), ‘mixed’ adenomas (≥25% spindle cells), adenocarcinomas (1–24%) and ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas (≥25% spindle cells). Tumours were evaluated immunohistochemically for smooth muscle actin (SMA) and estrogen receptor (ER) expression. Disease‐free interval (DFI) and survival time (ST) were calculated using Kaplan–Meier product limit method. Of 24 cases of spindle cell variant adrenal tumours, one was a hyperplastic nodule, 10 were adenomas, three were ‘mixed’ adenomas, six were adenocarcinomas and four were ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas. The proliferative spindle cell cytoplasm was SMA‐positive (smooth muscle myocyte origin). ER positivity, seen in nine of 24 cases, was restricted to adenocarcinomas, ‘mixed’ adenomas and ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas. DFI and ST were significantly reduced in ‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas or tumours with ER expression. DFI was significantly reduced in tumours with marked smooth muscle. The spindle cell component of these variant adrenal tumours is smooth muscle in origin. The presence of abundant smooth muscle, a more malignant histologic grade (‘mixed’ adenocarcinomas) and ER expression are significantly positively correlated to both decreased DFI and decreased ST.  相似文献

Tumors of the adrenal cortex account for 10-20% of the naturally occurring Cushing's syndrome diagnosed in dogs. Differentiating between adrenocortical adenoma and carcinomas is often difficult. The purposes of this study were to determine which histopathologic criteria can be used as markers for malignancy in canine adrenocortical tumors and the relevance of the proliferation marker, Ki-67, for differentiation between cortical adenomas and carcinomas. Twenty-six adrenocortical carcinomas, 23 adenomas, and 11 normal adrenal glands were examined. Morphologic criteria significantly associated with adrenocortical carcinomas included a size larger than 2 cm in diameter, peripheral fibrosis, capsular invasion, trabecular growth pattern, hemorrhage, necrosis, and single-cell necrosis, whereas hematopoiesis, fibrin thombi, and cytoplasmic vacuolation were significantly associated with adrenocortical adenomas. The mean (+/- SD) proliferation index, measured by immunohistochemistry for the Ki-67 antigen, was 9.3 +/- 6.3% in carcinomas, 0.76 +/- 0.83% in adenomas, and 0.58 +/- 0.57% in normal adrenal glands. The Ki-67 proliferation index was significantly higher in carcinomas compared with adenomas and normal adrenal glands. A threshold value of the proliferation index of 2.4% reliably separated carcinomas from adenomas. Based on these results, it appears that thorough evaluation of morphologic features combined with immunohistochemical assessment of the proliferation index is extremely useful for differentiating between adrenocortical adenomas and carcinomas in dogs.  相似文献

The adrenal glands of 20 normal ferrets were imaged with ultrasound. Of the forty glands, only 4 (three right and one left) could not be clearly identified. Mean (±standard deviation) dimensions of the right (7.6 ± 1.8 mm length by 2.6 ± 0.4 mm width) and left (7.2 ± 1.8 mm length by 2.8 ± 0.5 mm width) glands were similar. Both adrenal glands were wider (p<0.05) sonographically in males than females. Measured length and width of the right gland positively correlated (p<0.05) with body weight. The glands had a hypoechoic outer zone and hyperechoic central region, were elongate to avoid in shape and located medial and, variably, at the level of the cranial pole of the ipsilateral kidney. This study demonstrates that normal adrenal glands can be imaged in ferrets.  相似文献

Whereas the adrenal glands of healthy ferrets produce only limited amounts of androgenic steroids, adrenocortical neoplasms that arise in neutered ferrets typically secrete androgens or their derivative, estrogen. The 17,20-lyase activity of cytochrome P450 17alpha-hydroxylase/17,20-lyase (P450c17) must increase to permit androgen biosynthesis in neoplastic adrenal tissue. We screened ferret adrenocortical tumor specimens for expression of cytochrome b(5) (cyt b(5)), an allosteric regulator that selectively enhances the 17,20-lyase activity of P450c17. Cyt b(5) immunoreactivity was evident in 24 of 25 (96%) adrenocortical adenomas/carcinomas from ferrets with signs of ectopic sex steroid production. Normal adrenocortical cells lacked cyt b(5), which may account for the low production of adrenal androgens in healthy ferrets. Other markers characteristic of gonadal somatic cells, such as luteinizing hormone receptor, aromatase, and GATA4, were coexpressed with cyt b(5) in some of the tumors. We concluded that cyt b(5) is upregulated during gonadectomy-induced adrenocortical neoplasia and is a marker of androgen synthetic potential in these tumors.  相似文献

A protocol was developed to compare the ultrasonographic characteristics of the adrenal glands of 21 healthy ferrets and 37 ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism. By using specific landmarks, the adrenal glands were imaged in 97% of the cases. The adrenal glands of ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism had a significantly increased thickness, with changes in shape, structure, and echogenicity compared to the adrenal glands of healthy ferrets. Based on the findings of the study, adrenal glands may be classified as abnormal when they have a rounded appearance, increased size of the cranial/caudal pole (thickness >3.9 mm), a heterogeneous structure, increased echogenicity, and/or signs of mineralization.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical and endocrine responses of ferrets with adrenocortical disease (ACD) to treatment with a slow-release implant of deslorelin acetate. ANIMALS: 15 ferrets with ACD. PROCEDURE: Ferrets were treated SC with a single slow-release, 3-mg implant of deslorelin acetate. Plasma estradiol, androstenedione, and 17-hydroxyprogesterone concentrations were measured before and after treatment and at relapse of clinical signs; at that time, the adrenal glands were grossly or ultrasonographically measured and affected glands that were surgically removed were examined histologically. RESULTS: Compared with findings before deslorelin treatment, vulvar swelling, pruritus, sexual behaviors, and aggression were significantly decreased or eliminated within 14 days of implantation; hair regrowth was evident 4 to 6 weeks after treatment. Within 1 month of treatment, plasma hormone concentrations significantly decreased and remained decreased until clinical relapse. Mean time to recurrence of clinical signs was 13.7 +/- 3.5 months (range, 8.5 to 20.5 months). In 5 ferrets, large palpable tumors developed within 2 months of clinical relapse; 3 of these ferrets were euthanatized because of adrenal gland tumor metastasis to the liver or tumor necrosis. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In ferrets with ACD, a slow-release deslorelin implant appears promising as a treatment to temporarily eliminate clinical signs and decrease plasma steroid hormone concentrations. Deslorelin may not decrease adrenal tumor growth in some treated ferrets. Deslorelin implants may be useful in the long-term management of hormone-induced sequelae in ferrets with ACD and in treatment of animals that are considered at surgical or anesthetic risk.  相似文献

A review was performed of ultrasonographic findings in 26 dogs with confirmed adrenal lesions. Adrenal shape, size, echogenicity, laterality, and the presence of vascular invasion were evaluated. Histopathologic diagnoses were obtained in all dogs. Adrenal lesions were confirmed as pheochromocytomas (9), adenocarcinomas (6), a poorly differentiated blastoma (l), bilateral adrenal metastases of a carcinoma (l), adenomas-one of which was bilateral-(4) and hyperplasia (6). Size and shape were extremely variable and not specific to lesion type. There was a tendency for pheochromocytomas (7), adenocarcinomas (5) and poorly differentiated blastoma (1) to be rounded masses. Adenomas (4), hyperplasia (7) and adrenal metastases (2) presented predominantly as nodules. No specificity in echogenicity was noted. Mineralization and bilaterality were present in both benign and malignant lesions. Vascular extension or the presence of a thrombus were suggestive but not specific signs of malignancy. Based on our prelimiary study, ultrasonography is an effective method for localizing adrenal lesions and is helpful in assessing their extension. However, no definitive differentiation between benign and malignant lesions was possible using ultrasonographic criteria alone.  相似文献

ADRENAL ULTRASONOGRAPHY CORRELATED WITH HISTOPATHOLOGY IN FERRETS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The adrenal glands of twenty-six, 12-to 53-month-old, ferrets without clinical signs of adrenal disease were examined and measured by ultrasonography and the findings compared with those from gross examination and histopathology. Of 51 adrenal glands examined, 27 were normal, 23 had either nodular or diffuse cortical hyperplasia and 1 had an adenocarcinoma. There was no statistically significant difference between the sonographic nor gross size of normal adrenal glands and those with hyperplasia. Moderate correlation was found between gross and sonographic measurements of length for both right (r=0.783; p<0.0001) and left (r=0.609; p<0.001) adrenal glands; however, the sonographic measurements were less than the gross measurements. Correlation was found between the sex and weight of the ferret and adrenal gland length (p<0.01) and width (p<0.02). In female ferrets, the length, width, and depth of the right adrenal gland sonographically measured (mean±sd) 7.5±1.2 mm, 3.7±0.6 mm, 2.8±0.4 mm, respectively, and the left measured 7.4±1.0 mm, 3.7±0.4 mm, 2.8±0.4 mm; in males, the right adrenal measured 8.9±1.6 mm, 3.8±0.6 mm, 3.0±0.8 mm and the left measured 8.6±1.2 mm, 4.2±0.6 mm, 3.0±0.6 mm. Accessory adrenal tissue was not identified during the sonographic examination but was grossly found in 10 of the ferrets. Medical records from 7 ferrets presented to the VMTH with histologically confirmed adrenal neoplasia were reviewed. Three neutered female ferrets had adrenal cortical adenoma; four ferrets (2 neutered females, 2 neutered males) had adrenal cortical carcinoma. Ultrasound identified unilateral enlargement or abnormal shape of the adrenal gland in all ferrets. Only 1 ferret had adrenomegaly on abdominal radiographs. Adrenomegaly was identified in 1 ferret by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). All ferrets were treated by adrenalectomy followed by a tapered dose of prednisone. Surgical complications were limited to fatal hemorrhage from the caudal vena cava in 1 ferret. Remission of clinical signs occurred in all 6 ferrets which survived surgery. The time of follow up varied from 3 to 16 months. The 3 ferrets with adrenal adenomas were still alive 3 to 7 months after surgery. AH 3 ferrets with adrenal carcinoma developed metastasis and were euthanized from 2 to 16 months after surgery.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine plasma concentrations of adrenocorticotrophic hormone (ACTH) and alpha-melanocyte stimulating-hormone (alpha-MSH) in healthy ferrets and ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism. ANIMALS: 16 healthy, neutered, privately owned ferrets, 28 healthy laboratory ferrets (21 sexually intact and 7 neutered), and 28 ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism. PROCEDURES: Healthy ferrets were used for determination of reference plasma concentrations of ACTH and a-MSH. Diagnosis of hyperadrenocorticism was made on the basis of history, clinical signs, urinary corticoid-to-creatinine ratios, ultrasonography of the adrenal glands, and macroscopic or microscopic evaluation of the adrenal glands. Blood samples were collected during isoflurane anesthesia. Plasma concentrations of ACTH and alpha-MSH were measured by radioimmunoassay. RESULTS: Plasma concentrations of ACTH in 23 healthy neutered ferrets during the breeding season ranged from 4 to 145 ng/L (median, 50 ng/L). Plasma concentrations of alpha-MSH in 44 healthy neutered or sexually intact ferrets during the breeding season ranged from < 5 to 617 ng/L (median, 37 ng/L). Reference values (the central 95% of the values) for ACTH and alpha-MSH were 13 to 100 ng/L and 8 to 180 ng/L, respectively. Plasma concentrations of ACTH and alpha-MSH in ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism ranged from 1 to 265 ng/L (median, 45 ng/L) and 10 to 148 ng/L (median, 46 ng/L), respectively. These values were not significantly different from those of healthy ferrets. Plasma ACTH concentrations of sexually intact female ferrets in estrus were significantly higher than those of neutered females. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism did not have detectable abnormalities in plasma concentrations of ACTH or alpha-MSH. The findings suggest that hyperadrenocorticism in ferrets is an ACTH and alpha-MSH-independent condition.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the long-term survival rate and factors that affect survival time of domestic ferrets treated surgically for hyperadrenocorticism. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 130 ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism that were treated surgically. PROCEDURES: Medical records of ferrets surgically treated for hyperadrenocorticism were reviewed. Data recorded included signalment, duration of clinical signs prior to hospital admission, CBC values, serum biochemical analysis results, anesthetic time, surgical time, concurrent diseases, adrenal gland affected (right, left, or both [bilateral]), histopathologic diagnosis, surgical procedure, caudal vena caval involvement (yes or no), postoperative melena (yes or no), days in hospital after surgery, and whether clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism developed after surgery. RESULTS: 130 ferrets were entered in the study (11 of 130 ferrets were admitted and underwent surgery twice). The 1- and 2-year survival rates were 98% and 88%, respectively. A 50% survival rate was never reached. Combined partial adrenal gland resection with cryosurgery had a significantly negative effect on survival time. No other risk factors were identified. Survival time was not significantly affected by either histopathologic diagnosis or specific affected adrenal gland (right, left, or bilateral). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Ferrets with adrenal gland masses that were treated surgically had a good prognosis. Survival time of ferrets with hyperadrenocorticism undergoing surgery was not affected by the histologic characteristic of the tumor, the adrenal glands affected (right, left, or bilateral), or complete versus partial adrenal gland resection. Debulking was a sufficient surgical technique to allow a favorable long-term outcome when complete excision was not possible.  相似文献

Contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography is useful in differentiating adrenal gland adenomas from nonadenomatous lesions in human patients. The purposes of this study were to evaluate the feasibility and to describe contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography of the normal canine adrenal gland. Six healthy female Beagles were injected with an intravenous bolus of a lipid‐shelled contrast agent (SonoVue®). The aorta enhanced immediately followed by the renal artery and then the adrenal gland. Adrenal gland enhancement was uniform, centrifugal, and rapid from the medulla to the cortex. When maximum enhancement was reached, a gradual homogeneous decrease in echogenicity of the adrenal gland began and simultaneously enhancement of the phrenicoabdominal vessels was observed. While enhancement kept decreasing in the adrenal parenchyma, the renal vein, caudal vena cava, and phrenicoabdominal vein were characterized by persistent enhancement until the end of the study. A second contrast enhancement was observed, corresponding to the refilling time. Objective measurements were performed storing the images for off‐line image analysis using Image J (ImageJ©). The shape of the time–intensity curve reflecting adrenal perfusion was similar in all dogs. Ratios of the values of the cortex and the medulla to the values of the renal artery were characterized by significant differences from initial upslope to the peak allowing differentiation between the cortex and the medulla for both adrenal glands only in this time period. Contrast‐enhanced ultrasonography of the adrenal glands is feasible in dogs and the optimal time for adrenal imaging is between 5 and 90 s after injection.  相似文献

Thirty pet ferrets with adrenocortical disease (ACD) of varying severity and duration were evaluated for response to a single administration of a slow release 4.7 mg deslorelin acetate implant. Clinical response to deslorelin was monitored via a physical examination performed every 3 to 4 months. Adrenal ultrasound measurements were taken every 3-4 months until clinical relapse. At clinical relapse, duration of symptom suppression and adrenal size and growth were determined. Administration of a single 4.7 mg implant of deslorelin acetate resulted in significant decreases in the clinical signs and hormonal concentrations associated with ACD. Within 14 days post-implant, vulvar swelling, pruritus, sexual behaviors and aggression decreased or disappeared. Hair re-growth was evident by 4-6 weeks post implant. Within two months post deslorelin implant, plasma concentrations of steroid hormones decreased: mean estradiol concentration decreased 28%; 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels decreased 89% and androstenedione levels decreased 88%. The response to a single 4.7 mg implant of deslorelin acetate was transitory. The mean ± SD time to recurrence of clinical signs was 17.6 ± 5.0 months (range, 8.0-30.0 months). Repeated ultrasound measurements revealed no statistical difference in size of the adrenals (right or left) before, during the months of deslorelin implant and at clinical relapse. Slow release 4.7 mg deslorelin implants can effectively be used to temporarily eliminate the clinical signs and reduce steroid hormone concentrations in ferrets with ACD. This dose of deslorelin does appear to influence adrenal tumor growth causing a decrease in adrenal size in some ferrets, and mild enlargement of adrenal glands in most ferrets with 2 of 30 implanted animals developing large tumors before clinical relapse. The long-term effect of treatment with deslorelin on adrenal tumor pathology requires additional investigation. At this time, surgical removal of the adrenal tumor remains the only curative treatment; however, 4.7 mg deslorelin implants are useful in the long-term management of ACD hormone-induced sequelae and may be as effective assurgical management.  相似文献

Feline hyperthyroidism is potentially associated with exaggerated responsiveness of the adrenal gland cortex. The adrenal glands of 23 hyperthyroid cats were examined ultrasonographically and compared to the adrenal glands of 30 control cats. Ten hyperthyroid cats had received antithyroid drugs until 2 weeks before sonography, the other 13 were untreated. There was no difference in adrenal gland shape between healthy and hyperthyroid cats: bean-shaped, well-defined, hypoechoic structures surrounded by a hyperechoic halo in 43/60 (71.6%) healthy cats and 34/46 (73.9%) hyperthyroid cats; more ovoid in 13/60 (21.6%) healthy cats and 9/46 (19.6%) hyperthyroid cats while more elongated in 4/60 (6.7%) healthy cats, 3/46 (6.5%) hyperthyroid cats. Hyperechoic foci were present in 9/23 (39.1%) hyperthyroid cats and 2/30 (6.7%) healthy cats. The adrenal glands were significantly larger in hyperthyroid cats, although there was overlap in size range. The mean difference between hyperthyroid cats and healthy cats was 1.6 and 1.7 mm in left and right adrenal gland length, 0.8 and 0.9 mm in left and right cranial adrenal gland height, and 0.4 and 0.9 mm in left and right caudal adrenal gland height. There was no significant difference between the adrenal gland measurements in treated and untreated hyperthyroid cats. The adrenomegaly was most likely associated with the hypersecretion of the adrenal cortex documented in hyperthyroid cats. Hyperthyroidism should be an alternative to hyperadrenocorticism, hyperaldosteronism, and acromegaly in cats with bilateral moderate adrenomegaly.  相似文献

Ultrasonographic evaluation of the adrenal glands was performed in 10 dogs with pituitary-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (PDH) and in 10 age- and weight-matched healthy control dogs. Thickness, shape, and echogenicity were determined for each adrenal gland. Adrenal thickness in dogs with PDH (median, 10 mm-left; 8.5 mm-right) was significantly greater than thickness in control dogs (median, 6 mm-left; 6 mm-right). Other ultrasonographic characteristics associated with PDH included bilaterally symmetrical adrenomegaly and maintenance of normal adrenal shape. Adrenal echogenicity was homogeneous and less than that of the adjacent renal cortex in 8 of 10 dogs with PDH and in 10 of 10 control dogs. Heterogenous echogenicity was present in 2 of 10 dogs with PDH, and was associated with nodular cortical hyperplasia in one of those dogs. Results of this study confirm the difference in sonographic appearance between PDH-induced bilateral cortical hyperplasia and functional adrenocortical neoplasia, and show a difference in so-nographically determined adrenal size between healthy dogs and dogs with PDH. In canine mammary tumors, we examined the telomerase activity, proliferative activity by proliferative cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) immunohistochemistry, and percentage of apoptotic cells by the deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) method. The relationship between these measures and histopathologic malignancy was also investigated. PCNA index was highest in malignant tumors (adenocarcinoma: 27.0%; malignant mixed tumor: 15.7%), followed by benign tumors (adenoma: 4.4%; benign mixed tumor: 5.3%), hyperplasia (2.1%), and normal mammary gland (0.9%). In adenoma and adenocarcinoma, papillary and solid types showing higher cellularity tended to have higher PCNA indices than did cystic and tubular types. Although the TUNEL index was <1% in all cases, the relationship between this measure and histopathologic diagnosis showed the same tendency as observed in PCNA immunostaining. Telomerase activity was detectable in all adenomas, benign mixed tumors, and adenocarcinomas examined. In contrast, all normal mammary glands, hyperplasias, and malignant mixed tumors were negative for telomerase. Relative telomerase activity (RTA) of adenocarcinoma (56.5) was significantly higher than that of adenoma (27.8) and benign mixed tumor (33.9), and a significant positive correlation (P < 0.001) was noted between RTA and PCNA index. No significant correlations were noted between either PCNA or TUNEL index and clinical features such as metastasis and tumor diameter. PCNA index and telomerase activity may be useful markers for judging malignancy of canine mammary tumors.  相似文献

Background: Pituitary tumors in dogs can be adenomas, invasive adenomas, or adenocarcinomas. In people, invasive adenomas and pituitary adenocarcinomas carry a worse prognosis than adenomas.
Hypothesis/Objective: To identify differentiating features on cross-sectional imaging in dogs with pituitary adenomas, invasive adenomas, and adenocarcinomas.
Animals: Thirty-three dogs that had computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed and a necropsy diagnosis of pituitary adenoma ( n = 20), invasive adenoma ( n = 11), or adenocarcinoma ( n = 2).
Methods: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for signalment, history, and diagnosis. CT and MR images were reviewed for characteristics of pituitary tumors.
Results: Mean (± standard deviation) age for dogs with pituitary adenomas (10.6 ± 2.9 years) was greater than that of those with invasive adenomas (8.3 ± 2.7 years, P = .04). Eighteen out of 20 (90%) dogs with adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Thirteen out of 20 (65%) had homogeneous enhancement. Mean adenoma height was 1.2 ± 0.7 cm. Eight out of 20 (40%) adenomas were round and 8/20 (40%) compressed surrounding brain. Eleven out of 11 dogs (100%) with invasive adenomas had contrast-enhancing masses. Seven out of 11 (64%) masses were homogeneous. Mean invasive adenoma height was 1.8 ± 0.7 cm, which was significantly greater than adenomas ( P = .03). Mass shape varied from round to oval to irregular. Six out of 11 (55%) masses compressed surrounding brain. Clinical and imaging features were variable for 2 dogs with adenocarcinomas.
Conclusions and Clinical Relevance: Invasive adenoma should be suspected if a dog with a pituitary tumor is <7.7 years of age and has a mass >1.9 cm in vertical height. Adenocarcinomas are uncommon and metastatic lesions were not seen with imaging.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine signalment, clinical signs, concurrent diseases, response to surgical treatment, and long-term outcome of ferrets with bilateral adrenal tumors or adrenal hyperplasia. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 56 ferrets with bilateral adrenal tumors or adrenal hyperplasia confirmed histologically following subtotal bilateral adrenalectomy. PROCEDURE: Medical records of all ferrets with bilateral adrenal tumors or hyperplasia examined between 1994 and 1997 were reviewed. Ferrets underwent a subtotal bilateral adrenalectomy or a unilateral adrenalectomy initially, followed by a unilateral subtotal adrenalectomy when tumors or hyperplasia later developed on the contralateral adrenal gland. A long-term follow-up of a minimum of 18 months after final adrenal gland surgery was obtained by examination of medical records and follow-up telephone conversations. RESULTS: Clinical signs of hyperadrenocorticism included bilaterally symmetric alopecia, return to male sexual behavior in castrated male ferrets, or swollen vulva in spayed female ferrets. Surgical treatment of bilateral adrenal disease by subtotal bilateral adrenalectomy (or unilateral adrenalectomy followed by contralateral unilateral subtotal adrenalectomy) was effective with a mortality rate of < 2%. Only 3 (5%) ferrets required glucocorticoid or mineralocorticoid replacement following subtotal bilateral adrenalectomy. Recurrence after bilateral adrenalectomy was 15% with a mean long-term follow-up period of 30 months. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Bilaterally symmetric alopecia, return to male sexual behavior in castrated male ferrets, or swollen vulva in spayed female ferrets are indicative of adrenal tumors or adrenal hyperplasia in ferrets. Surgical treatment of bilateral adrenal disease by subtotal bilateral adrenalectomy is effective, with a low rate of complications and postoperative recurrence rate.  相似文献

The monoclonal antibody A103 to the melanocytic differentiation antigen Melan A stains human steroid-producing cells and their tumors. A total of 200 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded canine normal tissues and hyperplastic and neoplastic lesions of the adrenal gland, testis, and ovary were immunohistochemically tested for Melan A with antibody A103. Leydig cell tumors (23/23, 100%), Sertoli cell tumors (14/15, 93%), and adrenocortical adenomas (12/13, 92%) were consistently positive. Adrenocortical carcinomas (23/35, 65%) and granulosa cell tumors (10/17, 59%) were less frequently positive. All pheochromocytomas, seminomas, and dysgerminomas were negative. The pattern of staining was cytoplasmic, but nuclear staining was also frequently seen in normal Leydig cells and their tumors. As in human tumors, immunohistochemistry for Melan A stains many canine steroid-producing tumors and can be used to distinguish these tumors from those of nonstereidogenic cells.  相似文献
