The normal microflora colonizing the digestive tract in livestock species at five to six days after birth can be summarized as following: 400 to 500 different bacterial strains for a total count of 10(14) bacteriae. The role of the gut flora is multifarious: fermentation of feed compounds, induction of anatomical and physiological changes in the intestinal cell wall structure, increase in animal resistance against enteropathogenic bacteriae, etc. In the present review, the numerous hypotheses for explaining the beneficial effects of probiotics on zootechnical performances and also the healthy aspects for men and animals are summarized, and the possible mechanisms of bacterial attachment are enumerated. The different assumptions on mode of action and fixation mechanisms of probiotics in the gut are critically discussed, and the required characteristics of the ideal probiotic are listed. Finally, some zootechnical results obtained with lactic acid bacteria are shown for calves, piglets and broilers.  相似文献

Pantothenic acid (PA) is essential in metabolism due to its incorporation into coenzyme A and acyl‐carrier‐protein. In addition to fodder, ruminants have another PA source, as the micro‐organisms in the rumen can synthesize PA. However, it has not been evaluated whether synthesis can meet the PA requirements of dairy cows. Furthermore, synthesis appears to be influenced by forage to concentrate ratio in the diet. It is not yet clear, if oral PA supplementations can increase the duodenal PA flow in dairy cows, but it has been reported that about 80% of supplemented PA disappears between the mouth and duodenum. However, supplementation of PA can increase blood PA levels. To give a general view of the actual state of research, the present review discusses the current knowledge, identifies gaps in knowledge and presents areas for future research.  相似文献

Lactate is known as the end product of anaerobic glycolysis, a pathway that is of key importance during high intensity exercise. Instead of being a waste product lactate is now regarded as a valuable substrate that significantly contributes to the energy production of heart, non-contracting muscles and even brain. The recent cloning of monocarboxylate transporters, a conserved protein family that transports lactate through biological membranes, has given a new insight into the role of lactate in whole body metabolism. The sow varies greatly in her mineral requirements, which largely reflects the nutritional demands during different phases of her reproductive cycle. Minerals are required for conceptus product formation, mammary secretions, and growth and maintenance. Although the sow's mineral requirements are highest during late gestation and lactation, those that are supplied from the diet and tissue reserves both contribute in meeting these nutritional needs. The sow is fairly resilient to borderline mineral insults, but longevity in the herd may be compromised under these conditions. Specific mineral deficiencies vary, but the reproducing sow will deplete the pool of tissue minerals before litter size, congenital abnormalities of developing fetuses or milk mineral composition are affected. Inadequate mineral supplies may prolong the duration of parturition, increase the number of stillbirths and result in a higher occurrence of skeletal problems. Tissue mineral reserves can be increased in various tissues with higher dietary fortification, but subsequent mineral availability from various pools differ. Because feed intake during lactation is low, daily mineral intake during lactation often is below NRC (1988) requirements.  相似文献

The most consistent published ideas on the function of the carpal joint of the horse concern the elasticity of the joint, and its limits to extension. Most of these are not well substantiated experimentally. Compression stress appears to be absorbed by the intercarpal ligaments as the carpal bones are separated by a wedge action during loading. Overextension is prevented by occlusion of dorsally located stop facets on the rows of carpal bones, and by the support of a stay apparatus.  相似文献

The current paper reviews the content and variation of fiber fractions in feed ingredients commonly used in swine diets. Carbohydrates serve as the main source of energy in diets fed to pigs. Carbohydrates may be classified according to their degree of polymerization: monosaccharides, disaccharides, oligosaccharides, and polysaccharides.Digestible carbohydrates include sugars, digestible starch, and glycogen that may be digested by enzymes secreted in the gastrointestinal tract of the pig. Non-digestible carbohydrates, also known as fiber, may be fermented by microbial populations along the gastrointestinal tract to synthesize short-chain fatty acids that may be absorbed and metabolized by the pig. These non-digestible carbohydrates include two disaccharides, oligosaccharides,resistant starch, and non-starch polysaccharides. The concentration and structure of non-digestible carbohydrates in diets fed to pigs depend on the type of feed ingredients that are included in the mixed diet. Cellulose,arabinoxylans, and mixed linked β-(1,3)(1,4)-D-glucans are the main cell wall polysaccharides in cereal grains, but vary in proportion and structure depending on the grain and tissue within the grain. Cell walls of oilseeds, oilseed meals, and pulse crops contain cellulose, pectic polysaccharides, lignin, and xyloglucans. Pulse crops and legumes also contain significant quantities of galacto-oligosaccharides including raffinose, stachyose, and verbascose. Overall,understanding the structure, characteristics and measurable chemical properties of fiber in feed ingredients may result in more accurate diet formulations, resulting in an improvement in the utilization of energy from less expensive high-fiber ingredients and a reduction in reliance on energy from more costly cereal grains.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

1. Dietary glycine equivalents (Glyequi) for glycine and serine represent the first-limiting non-essential amino acid in poultry diets. Targeted adjustment of essential amino acids and Glyequi in diets can considerably decrease crude protein (CP) in poultry diets below the limit of CP reduction when only essential amino acids are adjusted.

2. The level to which CP can be reduced in diets adequate in Glyequi depends on the objective; which includes reducing dietary CP without affecting performance and increasing nitrogen utilisation efficiency. Dietary CP can be reduced to ~15–16% in diets for up to 21 d old broiler chicken without affecting growth performance compared to responses to diets with currently common CP concentrations by considering Glyequi in the diet formulation. Dietary CP can be further reduced to maximise nitrogen utilisation efficiency; however, this leads to reduced growth performance.

3. The dietary Glyequi requirement of poultry varies depending on other dietary constituents. In broiler chickens up to 21 days of age, the dietary Glyequi requirement is estimated to be between 11 and 20 g/kg. This estimate is influenced by the concentrations of Cys and the endogenous Glyequi precursors, threonine and choline. Urinary nitrogen excretion seems to be a major determinant of the response to dietary Glyequi, because it is needed for uric acid formation.

4. The variable requirement for dietary Glyequi means that its static recommendation in poultry diets would lead to high safety margins in Glyequi supply or the risk of Glyequi deficiency. Variable recommendations for dietary Glyequi concentrations would help to supply birds based on their specific requirements and could reduce nitrogen emissions originating from poultry farming.  相似文献

A comprehensive review is given on pectin effects in pigs. Its effects on feed passage and digestion in the small intestine, the composition of ileal digesta and fermentation in the colon are described. Pectins promote fermentation at the terminal ileum and in the first part of the colon. It is shown, that pectin opposite to cellulose is degraded to high extents in the colon. Dietetic effects in relation to composition of ileocaecal digesta, endogenous secretions, buffering and pH-stability, high fermentability of organic matter in the colon and resulting volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the cranial part of the colon and even its possible interactions to colonization of the gut by infectious bacteria are described. Pectin effects concerning volume of the intestinal tract, distribution of VFA and lactic acid, role of endogenous secretions are described. The negative effect of pectins on praecaecal digestibility, their high degradation rates in the large intestine and consequences for their dietetic effects are discussed.  相似文献

Wildlife, domesticated animals and humans are exposed daily to myriad chemicals present in our environment. The risk posed by these chemicals to one species is often determined by extrapolation from data gathered from another species. Several extensive studies have examined the capability of the liver to biotransform xenobiotics in animals commonly used in toxicity testing and in livestock. The present paper is a compilation of these data into a single source to permit comprehensive examination of inter-species variation in rates of hepatic biotransformation. Several substrates were studied for each enzyme system, including cytochrome P-450-dependent monooxygenases, epoxide hydrolases, UDP-glucuronosyltransferases, N-acetyltransferases, glutathione S-transferases and sulfotransferases. The numerous differences in substrate specificity for an individual enzymatic pathway reflect the apparent multiplicity of these enzymes in all 11 species studied. Several hundred- to several thousand-fold differences between species in enzymatic activities for certain substrates under well-defined conditions emphasize the need for caution and the risk of error in extrapolation of xenobiotic metabolism from one species to another. In spite of these uncertainties, knowledge of the rate of biotransformation may help us predict the fate of new chemicals in various species.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of equine polysaccharide storage myopathy (EPSM) in two populations of horses in the UK. Biopsy specimens from 94 horses presented to an abattoir (population 1), and 46 horses with neuromuscular disorders presented to a university referral hospital (population 2) were obtained over a period of 4 years. Histological sections were examined by a veterinary pathologist for lesions including abnormal polysaccharide inclusions in myofibres.In population 1, a diagnosis of EPSM was made in 8% and non-specific myopathy in 33% of horses. In population 2, a diagnosis of EPSM was made in 22%, equine motor neurone disease (EMND) in 15% and non-specific myopathy in 37%. Within each population there was no difference in age, sex or breed distribution and muscle disease diagnosis. However, populations differed from each other in age and breed distributions and muscle disease diagnosis. EPSM was found in draft, Warmblood and related breeds and was diagnosed for the first time in cob-types. EMND was reported in 7/46 horses presented for neuromuscular disease and weakness, representing an important diagnosis in the UK. This study showed a high prevalence of EPSM and other myopathies in typical breeds of horses in the UK.  相似文献

The role of phosphorus in ruminant nutrition is discussed with reference to factors influencing phosphorus turnover. Recent information leading to a re-estimation of P requirements is presented.Particular reference is made to recent information on the hormonal control of P homeostasis and its relationship to the CaP interaction. Emphasis is placed on the interaction of P with other nutrients, particularly Ca, protein and energy, and it is stressed that phosphorus cannot be considered as an isolated nutrient and panacea for ill-thrift and infertility of rangeland cattle and sheep.  相似文献

This paper summarizes the current knowledge regarding the possible modes of action and nutritional factors involved in the use of essential oils(EOs) for swine and poultry.EOs have recently attracted increased interest as feed additives to be fed to swine and poultry,possibly replacing the use of antibiotic growth promoters which have been prohibited in the European Union since 2006.In general,EOs enhance the production of digestive secretions and nutrient absorption,reduce pathogenic stress in the gut,exert antioxidant properties and reinforce the animal's immune status,which help to explain the enhanced performance observed in swine and poultry.However,the mechanisms involved in causing this growth promotion are far from being elucidated,since data on the complex gut ecosystem,gut function,in vivo oxidative status and immune system are still lacking.In addition,limited information is available regarding the interaction between EOs and feed ingredients or other feed additives(especially pro- or prebiotics and organic acids).This knowledge may help feed formulators to better utilize EOs when they formulate diets for poultry and swine.  相似文献

Progesterone is in constant fluctuation throughout the lifespan of the horse. As a key regulator of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis, progesterone is involved in numerous aspects of reproduction. Synthetic analogs of progesterone, deemed progestins, are widely available to industry to act as progestogenic within the reproductive tract, although few are bioactive in the horse. Utilised to suppress oestrous, delay ovulation, maintain pregnancy, and for behavioural modifications, progestins are a commonly administered class of pharmaceuticals in veterinary medicine. In this review, we discuss the progestins available to equine industry, in addition to assessing efficacy, pharmacokinetics, and potential side effects following administration of each.  相似文献
