Genotype × environment interactions for tea yields   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Several methods were used to evaluate phenotypic stability in 20 tea (Camellia sinensis) genotypes, many of which are cultivated widely in East Africa. The genotypes were evaluated for annual yields at two sites over a six year period. Data obtained were used to compare methods of analysis of G × E interactions and yield stability in tea. A standard multi-factor analysis of variance test revealed that all first order interactions (genotypes × sites; genotypes × years; sites × years) as well as second order interactions (sites × genotype × years) were significant. Regression analysis was used to assess genotype response to environments. Regression coefficients (bi) obtained ranged from 0.78 to 1.25. Deviations from regression (S2d) were significant (p < 0.05) from 0.0 for all the test genotypes. Analysis for sensitivity to environment change (SE2 i) revealed that the test genotypes differed in their level of sensitivity. The hierarchical cluster analysis method was used to assemble the test genotypes into groups with similar regression coefficients (bi) and mean yield, which proved useful for the identification of high yielding genotypes for breeding purposes as well as for commercial exploitation. Rank correlation between yield and some stability parameters were significant. Mean yield was significantly correlated to bi (r = 0.80***) and SE2 i(0.74***) which is an indication that selection for increased yield in tea would change yield stability by increasing bi and SE2 i leading to development of genotypes that are specifically adapted to environments with optimal growing conditions. Genotypes differed in response to years and sites. As stand age increased, genotype yields generally increased though annual yield fluctuations were more pronounced in some genotypes than others. This response was not consistent across the sites for all genotypes indicating the need to test clones at multiple sites over longer periods of time. Summary In 1981/82 60 barleys varieties were grown at 18 environments (three locations, three seed rates, two soil fertility regimes) and in 1982/83 22 varieties were grown again at 21 environments (seven locations, three seed rates). Grain yield was recorded only in the second year. The estimates of variances sx 2 (untransformed data) and s2 logx (transformed data) for number of tillers and grain yield varied significantly among varieties. When untransformed data were used, high tillering varieties had a higher variance for number of tillers per unit area than low tillering varieties. When the variation was measured by CV of untransformed data or by s2 logx on transformed data a reverse relation occurred, i.e. the correlation coefficient between number of tillers and the variation of number of tillers was negative.High grain yielding varieties had a high mean number of tillers and a low variance for number of tillers per unit area when transformed data were used to compute variances. All interactions between variety, seed rate and location for grain yield were significant. The regression analysis of variety grain yield (Y) on environment mean grain yield (X) gave regression coefficients, b, ranging from 0.51 to 1.69. There was no significant correlation between regression coefficient and grain yield. The highest yielding varieties had b values around 1.0. High grain yielding varieties had low variance of yield over environments and low values for deviations from the regression when transformed data were used. However, the correlations between mean yield and variance for yield or mean yield and deviations from regression were positive when untransformed data were used. From this study it is concluded that high mean number of tillers per unit area and low variance for number of tillers could be used in selecting varieties with consistently high yield at varying environments. Techniques are proposed for application early in the breeding programme, i.e. in segregating population or in nurseries.  相似文献

Summary Pedigree selection for seed yield, using early generation yield tests, was practiced from the F2 to F7 in two populations of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in three plant densities: 66, 133, and 266 thousand plants ha-1 at CIAT-Palmira, Colombia. The six highest yielding lines selected from each plant-density, along with 13 parents, were evaluated in a 7×7 lattice design with three replications at the three densities utilized for selection, and at 399,000 plants ha-1 in 1988 and 1989.Based on the mean performance of selected lines and the mean of the parents, selection for seed yield was effective in all densities in both populations. However, none of the lines selected from the population within the race Mesoamerica (TC 4673) significantly outyielded their best parent under any plant density. The highest yielding lines selected from the interracial population (TR 4635) outyielded their best parent irrespective of the plant-density used for selection. The highest yielding line originated from the highest density used for selection. Low density was neither good for selection nor for evaluation and identification of high-yielding cultivars of common bean. There was no significant difference between the mean yield of lines selected at the intermediate and high population densities. The effects of plant density, year, and their interactions were significant for seed yield.  相似文献

A recurrent selection program for adaptation to diverse environments was successful in improving mean oat (Avena sativa L.) grain yield within and across testing environments. The objectives of this research were to determine if this selection program also resulted in changes in other agronomic traits or altered yield stability. Additionally, we investigated how selection modified the response of genotypes to climatic conditions. We evaluated random samples of 100 families from the original population and each of three selection cycle populations in replicated yield trials in Idaho, Iowa, and Norway for two years. Yield stability was assessed via joint regression analysis and superiority analysis. For each cycle, genetic relationships among yields observed indifferent environments were assessed by estimating phenotypic correlations between pairs of target environments. The effect of climate variables on genotype-by-environment interaction (GEI) responses was determined with partial least squares regression. Selection resulted in a small increase in mean heading date, a decrease in mean test weight, and no change in total above-ground biomass or plant height. Genotypic regression coefficients on environmental indices and deviations from regression were larger in the last cycle population, but superiority analysis demonstrated that selection significantly improved the adaptability of the population to the target testing environments. Improved adaptation was also demonstrated by increased phenotypic correlations among the most divergent pairs of environments in the later cycles. Partial least squares regression of GEI effects on climate variables suggested that later cycle families tended to respond more favorably to cooler than average conditions than the original population. Selection resulted in improved yield stability as well as improved mean yield. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Summary The main aim of the experiment was to study the behaviour of seven long-day adapted clones of Solanum tuberosum ssp. andigena (A) and three varieties of S. tuberosum ssp. tuberosum (T) in an incomplete diallel cross. The four groups of crosses, TxT, TxA, AxT and AxA, held 2, 12, 20 and 21 populations, respectively. Eleven of the intersubspecific crosses were exact reciprocals. Thirty random clones per population were grown as second clonal generation in an incomplete block design with four replications in plots of two plants per clone in 1980, the parents included in many plots. Data were recorded on ten characters. The results showed that group TxA gave the highest tuber yield and AxT the second highest. The F-values indicated highly significant genotypic effects for all characters in all populations. The mean genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV), were the highest for group AxA for all characters. The ANOVA, based on population means showed significant mean squares for general combining abilities (GCA) and for differences of reciprocalls for all characters; the specific combining ability (SCA) mean squares were significant only for date of emergence, plant height and haulm type. Almost all GCA effects of the parents were significant positive or negative. Several populations showed also significant SCA effects. The correlations between the GCA effects and the parental values were of about the same magnitude as the heritabilities; those between the population means and the midparental values were slightly lower.Compared to the midparental values, most populations showed significant positive heterosis for date of emergence, haulm type, number of tubers and under water weight; all populations had significant negative heterosis for mean tuber weight and nearly all for plant height and general impression. All populations from groups TxT and AxA had significant negative heterosis for tuber yield and so had 13 out of the 20 populations from group AxT, while seven of the 12 from group TxA showed significant positive and four significant negative heterosis. The average heterosis for tuber yield of group TxT was –11%, of TxA 3.4%, of AxT–9% and of AxA–18%. The highest mean tuber yields were obtained from crosses with a very high yielding A-parent as female, while the heterosis was negative. Though significant differences between the 11 reciprocals occurred for all characters, consistent differences occurred only for tuber yield. Averaged over the 11 crosses the TxA populations outyielded their exact reciprocals by 10.7%. For the highest tuber yields in A-T crosses, therefore, the tuberosum cytoplasm seems to be preferable. By contrast for a high male fertility the andigena cytoplasm is preferable.  相似文献

AFLP analysis was used to estimate genetic variability within and among 14 populations of Striga asiaticaL. Kuntze collected from different locations within the Republic of Benin. The mean within-population genetic distances ranged from 0.028 to 0.038, while the mean among-population genetic distances ranged from 0.019to 0.088, with an assumed minimum genetic distance of0.01 in each case. Intra- and inter-population variation was reflected by a highly significant R2 of 0.61for the regression of geographic distance versus genetic distance. Interactions of the different Strigapopulations with susceptible host genotypes, 8338-1 (Zea mays) and CK60B (Sorghum bicolor),indicated a high degree of host-specialization, with CK60B failing to support growth of the parasite from any of the populations. The various Striga populations also exhibited different degrees of virulence on susceptible host plants. Our results support the hypothesis that different populations of this parasite may well be considered and treated as ecotypes in plant breeding programs developing resistance to S. asiatica. Summary With a view to determining the comparative adaptation of semidwarf wheats to rainfed conditions, adaptation analyses were carried out on grain yield data of the 6th and 7th International Spring Wheat Yield Nurseries of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre. Sites were chosen which had not received irrigation: across a combined total of 44 such sites, yield variation was closely related to growing seasonal rainfall. Using these sites, yields of thirty-three common cultivars. Norin 10-derived semidwarf cultivars plus tall ones, were regressed against site mean yield to give a regression slope (b) and deviations from the regression (sd 2) for each cultivar.Semidwarf cultivars generally showed higher mean yields and larger regression slopes (b > 0.9) than tall cultivars from lower latitudes. Tall cultivars from higher latitudes showed the lowest mean yields and the lowest b values (< 0.7). No consistent trends in sd 2 were evident. Despite the greater regression slopes of semidwarf wheats, the best yields under all but the lowest yielding (driest) conditions were given by certain semidwarf cultivars; these had high mean yields and b values close to 1.0 (for example Tobari 66, Inia 66, Pato ArGentino and Sonalika). In contrast other semiwdarfs (notably Chenab 70) of similar mean yield, plant height and phenology, were not well adapted to the drier conditions as indicated by b values close to 1.3. The usefulness of the regression technique and the implications of these results for selection of semidwarf wheats adapted to drier conditions are discussed.Joint contribution from the Department of Agronomy, University of Sydney, N.S.W. 2006, Australia and the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT), Londres 40. Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) is one of the most important diseases limiting winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production in the western Great Plains of North America. There is no known effective WSMV resistance within the primary gene pool of wheat. However, a resistance gene (Wsm1) has been transferred to wheat from a perennial relative, intermediate wheat-grass [Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & DR Dewey]. Nebraska-adapted winter wheat lines carrying Wsm1 were used to characterize the effects of this alien introgression on agronomic and quality traits. Sister-lines from six breeding populations were evaluated under virus-free conditions, and under a naturally occurring viral infection. In uninfected locations, no significant difference for grain yield was detected between resistant (R) and susceptible (S) lines, when averaged over populations, but resistant lines had significantly higher test weights. Within populations, significantly higher grain yield was observed only in population 1, while significantly higher test weights occurred in populations 1, 2, 5 and 6. At the infected location, resistant lines were significantly higher in yield in five of six populations. In two of six populations, susceptible lines were significantly higher in bread loaf volume and bake mix time, while in the remaining populations, no significant quality differences were observed. As the Wsm1 gene provided yield advantages under viral infection, and there was no yield detriment in the absence of the virus, its deployment in hard winter wheat cultivars merits consideration.Joint contribution of the United States Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service and the Department of Agronomy, University of Nebraska-Lincoln as Journal Series Paper No. 15066. Three dry bean harvests are possible in some regions of Brazil that differ significantly in temperature, rainfall and day length conditions. Thus in breeding programs, generation advance using the bulk method can be carried out in these three periods. It is questionable whether under conditions such as these the action of natural selection would contribute to an increased frequency of individuals considered superior by breeders. The present study assessed six segregating populations, for up to 17 successive generations to check the effects of natural selection during inbreeding. Six populations were generated from a partial diallel: one group consisting of two early maturity cultivars, ESAL 686 and Manteigão Fosco was crossed to a second group of three cultivars with medium maturity, Carioca MG, Milionario and Ouro. The six populations plus the five parents were assessed in experiments using a randomized complete block design, in three locations: Lavras, where in breeding started from the F2 generation; Lambari and Patos de Minas, from the F3 generation. A linear regression equation was fitted to the parents and hybrids mean data in each location, considering grain yield as the dependent variable (y) and generations (F2 = 1, F3 = 2, etc.) as the independent variable. Genetic progress was estimated from the differences between the linear regression coefficients of the hybrids (bi)and the mean of the b coefficient of their respective parents (bj). The (bi-bj) were positive in all cases, showing that natural selection acted in all the segregating populations and contributed to an average increase in grain yield of 2.5% per generation over the mean of the parents.  相似文献

Determining the ploidy and geneticdiversity of a germplasm is necessarybefore initiating breeding or geneticstudies. This study was conducted tocharacterize the ploidy level of 57 naturalpopulations of orchardgrass (Dactylisglomerata L.) collected from the ranges ofThrace region of Turkey and the diversityamong populations based on RAPD (RandomAmplified Polymorphic DNA) markers. Flowcytometry was used to determine nuclear DNAcontent (pg 2C-1 = DNA content of adiploid somatic nucleus) of 6 plants foreach population. Nuclear DNA contents werecorrelated to ploidy level with root tipchromosome counts on selected plants. Onthe basis of this study, mean nuclear DNAcontent of orchardgrass was determined as9.57 ± 0.33 (with 95% confidenceinterval) while all the plants used inchromosome counting were determined to betetraploid, with 2n = 28 mitoticchromosomes, suggesting that diploidorchardgrass plants are likely very rare orabsent in ranges of Thrace region ofTurkey. In the RAPD assay, over 40polymorphic fragments were generated whichallowed some populations to bedistinguished from the rest by uniquemarkers. A cluster analysis was performedusing Nei's (1972) genetic distance indexwith an unweighted pair group method witharitmetic mean (UPGMA). The clusteranalysis indicated that there is a highlevel of gene flow among naturalorchardgrass populations and thereforegenes distributed quite homogeneouslythrough out the region. The results of thisstudy can be useful in the development ofDactylis germ plasm collectionstrategies in Thrace region for breedingpurpose.  相似文献

Summary The dry matter yields of four varieties of Lolium perenne with similar flowering dates (Ba 10761, cv. Talbot, cv. S.321 and cv. Tove) were compared during two harvest years in an orthogonal plot trial with two contrasting harvesting frequencies, three levels of applied nitrogen (200, 400 and 600 kg N/ha/yr) and two wear treatments (with and without wear). Frequent harvesting, reduction of applied nitrogen from 600 to 200 kg/ha, and wear reduced mean annual yield by 6.49, 5.13 and 0.65 t/ha respectively. Differences between varieties in mean annual dry matter yields over all treatments were 0.52 t/ha in the first harvest year and 1.49 t/ha in the second harvest year. Over both harvest years, Ba 10761 outyielded Talbot by 15% under frequent harvesting but by only 5% under infrequent harvesting. This variety/harvesting frequency interaction was due to relatively poor growth of Ba 10761 during the reproductive phase of growth, reproductive growth accounting for a larger proportion of total annual yield under infrequent harvesting than under frequent harvesting. Talbot gave relatively low yields at the lowest level of nitrogen. Genotype/harvesting management interactions arising from genetic independence of productivity during vegetative and reproductive growth can be predicted from results of single-management trials but such predictions of genotype/nitrogen level interaction are not yet possible.  相似文献

Summary Six Vitis rotundifolia Michx. (muscadine) grape genotypes were measured to determine variation and simple correlations between flower and fruit number/cluster, fruit cluster and individual fruit weight, fruit set and total vine yield. Significant variation was found for each trait, except fruit cluster weight. Range in mean values across selections for each trait were: 72 to 202 flowers/cluster; 16 to 26 fruit/cluster; 88.1 to 112.2 g/fruit cluster; 3.4 to 7.2 g/fruit; 11.3 to 23.4% fruit set; and 21.0 to 71.0 kg/vine for yield. Simple correlation values ranged from r=0.05 for flower number to cluster number to r=0.69 for fruit number to cluster weight. No trait was highly correlated to total yield. Therefore, to increase yield in muscadines it appears best to select for total yield and not for components contributing to yield.Paper No. 10968 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, Raleigh, NC 27695-7601.  相似文献

Summary Cultivated almonds (Prunus dulcis (Miller) D.A. Webb) in Morocco are still propagated from seeds by farmers to overcome transplant failure of grafted trees. Almond collections in southern Morocco conducted since 1975 have resulted in the selection of clones planted at 3 experimental stations. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to compare kernel, nut, leaf, and growth habit characteristics among 67 selected Moroccan clones and 14 introduced cultivars. Clustering of clones from similar countries and collection areas would suggest the existence of different almond populations. The Moroccan clones did not cluster separately from the foreign cultivars. Three Moroccan clones had exceptionally large nuts and kernels while 7 selections had high yield potential due to high spur density. Moroccan selections tended to be characterized by small leaves in comparison to foreign cultivars. No evidence was found to suggest the existence of separate populations within the Moroccan almond germplasm.  相似文献

Summary Four hundred sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) lines selected by five methods from five crosses were tested for yield and other agronomic characters in F6 and F7. More high yielding lines were isolated by the bulk method and in the cross involving two local cultivars when two seasons means and performance in each individual season were considered. The cross involving two exotic cultivars did not produce a single line superior to local recommended variety. The 80 highest yielding lines recorded a 10.8% increase in yield compared to the mean of 400 lines. Thirty five lines were among the top 20% both seasons with a 13.2% increase in yield. Highly significant seasonal and population effects were recorded. There were no significant differences among the methods of selection although the yield differences among lines were highly significant. Interactions of seasons × populations, seasons × methods, populations × methods and seasons × populations × methods were highly significant. The results indicate that simple and less expensive bulk method may be used with equal success as the pedigree, single seed descent or early generation testing methods when selecting for yield in segregating sesame populations. The importance of inclusion of a high yielding, locally adapted cultivar in the crossing programmes for yield breeding of sesame has also been revealed.Abbreviations BM Bulk method - EGT Early generation testing - G × E Genotype × environment - MSS Modified single seed descent - PM Pedigree method - SSD Single seed descent  相似文献

Reducing the number of flowering tillers that perennial ryegrass produces would improve the feeding value of herbage and could also be used to reduce pollen flow to wild ryegrass populations. Equivalent populations with and without one or more genes that reduce flowering (normal and leafy populations, respectively) were compared over three harvest years (1999‐2001) in a field plot experiment with two cutting managements (silage and simulated grazing). In 1999, samples of dried herbage from each harvest were analysed for leaf lamina content, in vitro digestibility (DMD), crude protein (CP) and water‐soluble carbohydrate (WSC). The leafy population produced one‐fifth to one‐third as many reproductive tillers in May as did the normal population, depending on the management. Mean leaf content of the herbage over all harvests and managements was 63 g/kg higher in the leafy population but its mean DMD was only 7 g/kg higher. In August, September and October, when the leaf contents of the two populations were very similar, the mean DMD of the leafy population was 7 g/kg lower than that of the normal population. Mean annual dry matter yield over both managements of the leafy population was 6‐8% lower than that of the normal population but the leafy population was slightly more persistent.  相似文献

Summary A total of 490 white clover genotypes were grown in competition withAgrostis tenuis and repeatedly defoliated, in a glasshouse trial. The percentage change in shoot yield from the first to the last harvest (harvest 6) was negatively correlated with the soil-P level from which ecotypes were collected. High- and low-yielding genotypes were selected from this study and compared in a field trial on a low-P soil (12 mg Olsen P/kg soil), in a grazed mixed species sward. Over the first year there was no significant difference in spread into the sward, and over three years no significant difference in persistence. Selection in glasshouses for yield is unlikely to improve edaphic stress tolerance in the field. In a field study in New Zealand, comparison of six ecotype populations showed that after one year the highest-spreading population had been collected from a low-P soil while the lowest spreading population came from a high-P soil, although the correlation between spread and soi-P from which ecotypes were collected was not significant (r=–0.67 p>0.05). However, in another field trial in England it was shown that populations collected from low-P soils not only outyielded those, collected from high-P soils but that they also responded less to added P.It was concluded that populations collected from low-P soils will be a useful source of germplasm to identify genotypes adapted to low-P soils. Successful identification of such genotypes is most likely to be made in the field rather than in controlled more artificial environments.  相似文献

Aluminium (Al) tolerance of 11 cultivars, breeding populations and accessions of the perennial grass, phalaris (Phalaris aquatica L.), was investigated in low ionic strength nutrient solutions. The populations were chosen to determine whether a program to improve the tolerance of phalaris to acid soils had resulted in improved Al tolerance. Populations derived by backcrossing genes from a more Al-tolerant species, P. arundinacea L. (AT populations), were significantly more Al tolerant than populations based on pure P. aquatica. Smaller levels of improvement in Al tolerance had also been achieved within P. aquatica through a combination of selection in Al solutions and at acid soil field sites. The response of roots and shoots to Al stress was similar. Some differences in ranking were obtained depending on whether Al tolerance was defined by actual growth in Al solution or growth relative to the zero Al treatment. Performance in nutrient solution containing Al was highly correlated with second year yield and persistence at a field site with acid soil high in Al to depth. Actual root dry weight in nutrient solution containing Al gave a slightly higher correlation with the field data than root weight relative to the zero control. A tendency for root dry weight to segregate in the presence of Al was observed in some P. aquatica populations but not in the AT populations. It was concluded that a significant improvement in the Al tolerance of phalaris has been achieved through a program to introgress genes from P. arundinacea into P. aquatica.  相似文献

Illinois bundleflower, Desmanthus illinoensis (Michaux) MacMillan, is an herbaceous perennial legume native to the central and southeastern USA. It has been identified as a potential perennial grain legume. To describe variation among natural populations for agriculturally desirable characteristics, 141 accessions of D. illinoensis and one of D. leptolobus were evaluated in common garden plantings established in 1988 and 1990. Characteristics showing diversity among populations included seed yield, plant height, growth habit, days to maturity, 100 seed weight, and shatter resistance. Eight characteristics were analyzed by principal components and cluster analysis. The resulting four clusters accounted for 56% of the variation among accessions. One cluster was distinctive in having plants with vigorous, prostrate first year growth, poor winter hardiness, and large seed. Three accessions also had indehiscent legumes useful for breeding shatter resistance. There appears to be sufficient variation to support genetic improvement of agricultural characteristics of Illinois bundleflower. In order to test if selection can improve a population's adaptation to diverse environments simultaneously, three cycles of recurrent selection based on grain yield in Iowa, Idaho, and Norway were practiced in an oat (Avena sativaL.) population developed from North American, Scandinavian, and wild species (A. sterilis L.) germplasm sources. Specific objectives were to determine if selection: increased mean yields across environments and within all environments; changed the genetic correlation of yields in different environments; and changed genetic variation for yield within the population. We evaluated 100 to 210 randomly-chosen families from each cycle of selection at three Iowa locations, in Idaho, and in Norway for two years. Grain yield within each location and mean yields across locations increased significantly over cycles of selection. Mean yields across locations expressed as a percent of the original population mean increased at a rate of 2.6% per year. Several families from the third cycle population exhibited both high mean yields across locations and consistently high yields within all locations. Average genetic correlations of yield in different environments were higher in the second cycle than in the original population. A trend of reduced genetic variation and heritability was observed in Iowa only. These results suggest that we successfully improved mean population yield both within and across locations, and yield stability across environments, and in developing families with outstanding adaptation to diverse environments. Summary Some 238 landraces from Algeria and Tunisia representative of the mediterraneum typicum durum wheat type and 265 landraces from Syria and Jordan representing the syriacum type were grown in a semi-arid Mediterranean environment of Northern Syria characterized by moderate drought stress. The germplasm types were compared for mean value, level of variation and relationships with grain yield of various morpho-physiological traits possibly usable for indirect selection of best yielding materials. The syriacum germplasm showed higher yield mainly due to greater earliness of cycle, slightly longer grain filling period, shorter stature, lower early growth vigour and higher drought tolerance expressed by a visual score recorded in another, more stressful environment in the region. It also showed lower variation for all morpho-physiological characters except plant glaucousness, for which it was more variable. The wheat types differed not only for architecture but also for optima of individual morpho-physiological traits required to maximize the yield response in the given environment. Higher yield of syriacum materials was attained at same heading and three to four days delayed maturity with respect to average phenology of three well-adapted control cultivars, and it was favoured by increasing number of kernels per spike, early vigour and drought tolerance. Higher yield of mediterraneum typicum landraces was related to heading and maturity dates approaching those of the control cultivars and to increasing kernel weight, early vigour and drought tolerance. Plant stature hardly affected the yield. Both absent and strong glaucousness could confer a yield advantage in syriacum materials.  相似文献
