Purpose

An assessment of the effect of plant cover on the properties of four afforested soils in central Sicily was performed with the aim of discriminating among them after 60?years of afforestation.

Materials and methods

Chemical and biochemical soil analyses were coupled to fast field cycling (FFC) NMR relaxation investigations in order to monitor surface interactions of water in water-saturated soils.

Results and discussion

The traditional soil analyses revealed that the most stable soil properties such as soil texture and pH are not affected by 60?years of afforestation. Soils developed under eucalyptus trees showed larger amounts of hydrophilic organic matter as compared to the soils under pines and cypresses. FFC-NMR relaxometry data revealed that water, partitioned in clay-, loam-, and sand-type pores, showed longitudinal relaxation time values affected by the interactions with the soluble carbon content.

Conclusions

The results of the present study evidenced the potential of FFC-NMR relaxometry in differentiating the effect of diverse plant cover on chemical and hydrological properties of soils developed on the same parent material. In fact, in contrast with the traditional physicochemical and biochemical soil characterizations, which were unable to reveal differences among soils afforested with different plant species, FFC-NMR was capable of monitoring differences in water dynamics as affected by the presence of the most soluble soil organic material.  相似文献

A new synthetic species of Momordica (2n = 56) has been developed by crossing natural tetraploid Momordica subangulata subsp. renigera (2n = 56) with induced tetraploid Momordica dioica (2n = 4x = 56). The hybrid produces adventitious root tubers through which it perpetuates and propagates like its female parent and maintains its morphological characteristics in the progeny. The hybrid is naturally fertile and has the superior agronomic traits of both parents making it a good choice as a new vegetable crop. The new species is named Momordica × suboica Bharathi and described.  相似文献

Introduction

Joffell described in his book “Pedology” that in the process of weathering, autotrophic organisms grow on the bare surface of rocks and their metabolic products contribute much to the weathering. Treub2) observed also that the surface of volcanic ash was covered by the vigorous growth of algae in less than three years after the eruption of Krakatoa. From these statements it appears evident that microorganisms play an important part through the production of organic matter at the early period of soil formation. As soil-forming-process advances, however, microBrganisms are replaced by the higher chlorophyllbearing plants with regards to organic matter production in land, and they become more important in the decomposition of than in the production of organic matter.  相似文献

The indiscriminate and excessive use of pesticides poses serious risks to humans and the environment, including soil biota. Ecotoxicological tests are useful to indicate the extent to which these chemicals are harmful and how and where their effects occur. Some of these tests were standardized by ISO (International Organization for Standartization) using the earthworm species Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei, both native to temperate climates. However, these species may be of lower relevance for soil ecotoxicological studies since they live in the litter and feed on fresh organic matter. The species Pontoscolex corethrurus, native to tropical regions, may be an alternative for more relevant ecotoxicological tests as it is an endogeic geophagous species. However, little is known of its sensitivity to pesticides. Therefore, avoidance and mortality tests were performed using E. andrei and P. corethrurus and three pesticides commonly used in Brazilian agriculture: carbendazim, carbofuran and glyphosate. The tests were conducted in tropical artificial soil (TAS). For carbendazim, the median avoidance concentration (AC50) was 76.1 and 65.8 mg a.i. kg−1 and the median lethal concentration (LC50) 19.7 and 15.3 mg a.i. kg−1 for E. andrei and P. corethrurus, respectively. For carbofuran, the AC50 was 9.7 and 7.3 mg a.i. kg−1 and LC50 13.5 and 9.3 mg a.i. kg−1 for E. andrei and P. corethrurus, respectively. Concentrations applied in the field of these two pesticides have toxic effects on both species. Glyphosate showed no toxic effects for either species even at the highest concentration tested (47 mg a.i. kg−1), although they displayed avoidance behavior at this concentration. The sensitivity of P. corethrurus appears to be similar to the standard species for the pesticides evaluated reinforcing the notion that E. andrei is a good test species. Nevertheless, further studies should be undertaken using other contaminants to confirm the similar sensitivity of both species and the relevance of E. andrei in ecotoxicological tests.  相似文献

ε-Polylysine (ε-PL) is a food-grade cationic antimicrobial that is highly effective against a range of food pathogens and spoilage organisms. In compositionally complex environments, like those found in most foods and beverages, the antimicrobial activity of cationic ε-PL is likely to be impacted by its interactions with anionic components. The purpose of this study was to characterize the interactions between cationic ε-polylysine and an anionic biopolymer (high methoxyl pectin, HMP) using isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), microelectrophoresis (ME), and turbidity measurements. ITC and ME measurements indicated that ε-PL bound to pectin, while turbidity measurements indicated that the complexes formed could be either soluble or insoluble depending on solution composition. Ionic strength and pH were also shown to affect the interactions significantly, highlighting their electrostatic origin. This study demonstrates that ε-PL can form either soluble or insoluble complexes with anionic biopolymers depending on the composition of the system. Our study provides basic knowledge that will facilitate the more rational application of ε-PL in complex food systems.  相似文献

In this work, the sorption of strontium on a Ca-bentonite (CGA) from Almer??a (Spain) in column experiments was studied, and the results obtained were compared with the sorption onto the Na-bentonite (MX-80). The code CTXFIT (two site non-equilibrium sorption model) was used in order to fit the experimental data and to determine sorption and transport parameters. The effect of inlet Sr(II) initial concentration and the ionic strength were evaluated. The results obtained showed that the sorption capacities as well as the transport and sorption parameters of both bentonites were affected by the initial metal concentration. In experiments with higher inlet concentrations, columns were saturated faster, leading to shorter breakthrough and exhaustion times. On the other hand, a decrease of sorption and transport parameters was observed at higher ionic strengths, which would confirm ion exchange as the main mechanism of Sr(II) sorption onto both bentonites. The sorption parameters (sorption capacity and retardation factor) obtained indicated that the Ca-bentonite from Almer??a (Spain) presented better sorption performance than the Na-bentonite, which was related to the physical properties of the Ca-bentonite.  相似文献

An isotopic model (NISOTOP) has been developed to investigate the effect of the addition to soil of xenobiotics on urea hydrolysis, N mineralization and immobilization, nitrification and plant uptake of nitrogen in a soil-plant system, after addition of 15N enriched compounds. Therationale of the model follows from the errors in %15N abundance (15N D) and N concentration (CN) determinations which cause high variability coefficients in the calculation of the amount of nitrogen present in the different compounds derived from the added 15N enriched urea. The extent of these errors, besides depending on CN and 15N D errors, will also depend on natural 15N and 15N of the added compound, and therefore on the experimental conditions. The model is described by 18 first-order differential equations and is numerically solved by Euler's method with a time increment of 0.01 day. As an illustration, the model is applied to the effect of phenanthrene, chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene to a soil-plant system, following the addition of 15N-urea. These compounds have been chosen as examples of molecules having 3, 4 and 5 fused aromatic rings and are hereafter collectively referred to as PAHs. PAHs at the rate of 2 mg kg-1 soiland 15N-urea at the rate of 166.7 mg N kg-1 soil were added to wheat pots. At harvesting (after 14 days from plantation) the dry matter yield, the total N content and the N concentration of the wheat seedlings were not statistically affected by addition of the PAHs (P = 0.05). The efficiency of N uptake, that is the percentage of fertilizer taken up by the plants at harvesting in the absence of PAHs was 47.3%, while it was 11.7, 15.2 and 14.8% in the presence of phenanthrene, chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene,respectively. The computation of the first-order rate constants of the N transformations showed that N mineralization, nitrification and N-uptake were affected by the addition of phenanthrene, chrysene and benzo(a)pyrene, whilst benzo(a)pyrene inhibited urea hydrolysis more than phenanthrene and chrysene.  相似文献

Agrochernozems of a catena (local divide, backslope, and footslope positions on a gentle slope of southern aspect) on the fields of Belgorodskoe farm were studied. The soils are developed from lithologically heterogeneous sediments with temporal accumulation of precipitation water above the lithological contact. A close correlation between the morphology and properties of the soils and the character of their water regime in different positions of the catena was found. Agrochernozems of the divide belong to the migrational–mycelial type of forest-steppe chernozems according to their humus profile, water regime, and slightly differentiated distribution of carbonates. Agrochernozems on the backslope with a higher ground moistening have a more contrasting water regime with the topsoil drying in the summer, a sharper decrease in the humus content down the soil profile, and a distinct carbonate-accumulative horizon with a smooth upper boundary, which makes them closer to the type of steppe agrochernozems. The soils of the footslope are characterized by alternation of the percolative and exudative water regimes; these soils are classified as quasigley agrochernozems with a shortened humus horizon and with dispersed and pendant forms of pedogenic carbonates. The character of moistening, morphology, and properties of the studied soils allow us to state that their genesis is controlled by the local ecological conditions with minimal influence of erosional processes on the slope.  相似文献

To undertake a comprehensive study of the disturbanceeffects due to mining activities (manganese oreexploitation) on the chemical composition of drainagewaters, a 164 ha catchment in North-eastern Amazoniatropical forest was sampled weekly for a year period(June 1993 to June 1994) to determine the contrasts inrainwater, throughfall and stream water chemistrybetween the upper undisturbed area and the lower partaffected by deforestation and mining works. During the3 dry months season only about 15% of the totalannual input-output of chemical species to and fromthe catchment occurs. In the three wettest months,about 30% of the flux occurs, except 60% of thepotassium and nitrate release from the catchmentoccurs in these three months. The rain waters areslightly acidic (pH ≈ 5.2) with lowalkalinity, while the stream water is nearly neutral(pH ≈ 6.9): alkalinity is generated within thesoil and soil water system. The rainfall-throughfallrelationship of the chemical species in the naturalareas exhibits strong internal recycling and littleexport from the catchment. In the area changed bydeforestation and mining works almost all chemicalspecies show a net export in surface waters: these aremainly derived from the deforested area of the basin,where most probably due to enhanced weatheringprocesses because the vegetation cover has tore-establish itself.  相似文献

An experiment was conducted at Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, West Bengal, India during 2001–2003 to study the effect of levels of fertility and straw mulch on a rapeseed (Brassica campestris var yellow sarson)–greengram (Vigna radiata)–rice (Oryza sativa) cropping system under a rainfed upland ecosystem. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design having 14 treatment combinations of organic and inorganic nutrients along with straw mulch in three replicates. The results revealed that conjunctive use of organic and inorganic nutrients as well as paddy straw mulch resulted higher yield in both rapeseed and greengram, and the residual effects of different levels of fertilization and mulching also gave rise to higher grain yield in the succeeding rice crop. The uptake of nutrients, by the cropping system as a whole, to the tune of 204.29 and 183.00 kg ha?1 of N, 72.84 and 74.07 kg ha?1 of P and 179.95 and 175.41 kg ha?1 of K took place, with the treatment receiving 10 t ha?1 of farmyard manure (FYM) applied (to rapeseed) along with 50% recommended dose (RD) of NPK to all the crops in the sequence in two consecutive years, respectively. The same treatment resulted in a higher percentage of porosity vis-à-vis lower bulk density. Soil physico-chemical properties were superior in mulch-treated plots compared with no mulch treatment. Application of organic and inorganic nutrients along with proper moisture conservation practices can enhance the yields maintaining a good soil health.  相似文献

Introduction

The European Water Framework Directive aims to achieve a good ecological and chemical status in surface water of European rivers by the year 2015. Since sediments and particulate matter act as secondary sources for pollutants, applied sediment toxicology is perceived to play a major role for obtaining new knowledge that can contribute to successful attainment of the goal. However, the existing bioassays for sediment toxicity analyses do not provide sufficient data concerning bioavailability of environmental pollutants. In this regard, there is an urgent need to combine sediment contact assays with gene expression analysis to investigate mechanism-specific sediment toxicity.

Purpose

The aim of the novel joint research project is to develop a eukaryotic test system, which can be used to investigate the ecotoxicological effects of contaminated sediments on gene expression level (DNA-array and RT-PCR). Current ecotoxicological research customarily involves a battery of bioassays to cover different toxicological endpoints (e.g., teratogenicity, genotoxicity, mutagenicity, Ah-receptor-mediated toxicity, neurotoxicity). In contrast, methods that detect alterations in gene expression offer deeper insight by elucidating how chemical exposure and/or environmental challenge affect multiple metabolic pathways leading to these particular kinds of toxic response. Gene expression profiles reflect the way cells and organisms adapt or respond to a changing environment.

Conclusion

The present project aspires to increase the fundamental molecular and physiological knowledge concerning the mode of action of environmental toxicants in zebrafish (Danio rerio). By working with partners from the academic and research institutions as well as from industry and waterway regulations, the success of this basic research-driven joint project in terms of development and implementation of novel sediment toxicity methods will be realized.  相似文献

Contamination of soil with hydrocarbons occurs frequently. Restoring contaminated soils is costly and time consuming. Earthworms accelerate the removal of hydrocarbons as they burrow through soil by rendering contaminants available for microbial degradation, by feeding on the organic matter that harbour contaminants, and by improving soil structure and aeration. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are recalcitrant hydrocarbons that can contaminate the environment and can thus serve as models to study the factors that control the removal of petroleum from soil. The effect of earthworms on the removal of PAHs was reviewed. It was found that earthworms have the capacity to accelerate the removal of PAHs and their degradation products from soil. However, large numbers of earthworms are required, which might be expensive. Moreover, it may be difficult to provide sufficient organic material as feed while simultaneously maintaining high soil water content to allow burrowing.  相似文献

Abstract

Data on the organic matter composition of vegetation, crop litter, and forest litter of Oi (=L) horizons from several European locations available with the litter compound analysis (LCA) discussed in previous communications are presented. The wet chemical results are discussed in comparison to data as revealed by cross polarization magic angle spinning carbon‐13 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (CPMAS 13C‐NMR) and pyrolysis‐field ionization mass spectrometry (Py‐FIMS). The LCA of vegetation, crop litter, and forest litter provides much detailed information about the chemical composition of extractable organic matter. Normally, both CPMAS 13C‐NMR and Py‐FIMS confirm the wet chemical results. Our data suggest a moderate chemical variation between the fresh organic residue and the litter. NMR revealed structural information about the non‐extractable organic matter using a combination of wet chemical extraction and CPMAS 13C‐NMR of whole soil. In addition, Py‐FIMS identified specific SOM segments at a qualitative level.  相似文献
