OBJECTIVE: To compare orocecal transit time (OCTT) as assessed by use of the sulfapyridine appearance time in plasma after oral administration of sulfasalazine in dogs of varying age and body size and determine whether OCTT correlates with fecal quality. ANIMALS: 6 Miniature Poodles (MP), 6 Standard Schnauzers (SS), 6 Giant Schnauzers (GS), and 6 Great Danes (GD). PROCEDURE: Determinations of OCTT were made at 12, 22, 36, and 60 weeks of age. Dogs were fed sulfasalazine mixed with a meal. Blood samples were then collected for 6 hours. The OCTT was the time from ingestion of the meal to detection of sulfapyridine in plasma. Fecal moisture content and consistency were recorded during the same periods. RESULTS: Mean OCTT decreased during growth of GS and GD dogs. No correlation was found between OCTT and fecal variables during growth in the 4 breeds. Effect of body size was observed at 12 and 22 weeks of age, with a longer OCTT in GS and GD than in MP and SS dogs. Similar OCTTs were observed at 36 and 60 weeks of age in all breeds, although GS and GD dogs had poorer fecal quality during those periods. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: An effect of age on OCTT was observed only in large-breed dogs, with longer transit times in puppies (12 weeks old) than in adults (60 weeks old). Mean OCTT is not correlated with body size in adult dogs. No relationship was detected between OCTT and fecal variables in healthy dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare large intestinal transit time (LITT) in dogs of various body sizes and determine whether fecal quality was correlated with LITT. ANIMALS: 6 Miniature Poodles, 6 Standard Schnauzers, 6 Giant Schnauzers, and 6 Great Danes. PROCEDURE: LITT was calculated as the difference between total (TTT) and orocecal transit time (OCTT). Minimum and mean OCTTs were determined by use of the sulfasalazine-sulfapyridine method. Minimum TTT was estimated by use of chromium and ferric oxide as color markers, and mean TTT was calculated from the recovery from feces of ingested colored plastic beads. Fecal moisture content was determined and fecal consistency was scored during the same period. RESULTS: Large-breed dogs had higher fecal moisture content and more watery fecal consistency. No association between body size and OCTT was detected, but there was a positive correlation between body size and mean TTT. Mean LITT increased significantly with body size, from 9.1 +/- 1.1 hours in Miniature Poodles to 39.4 +/- 1.6 hours for Giant Schnauzers. Significant correlations were detected among mean LITT, mean TTT, and fecal scores, whereas no correlation was observed between fecal moisture content and TTT or LITT. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: LITT was correlated with fecal consistency in dogs of various body sizes. Mean LITT can be predicted from values for mean TTT in healthy dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate effects of age and body size of dogs on intestinal permeability (unmediated diffusion) as measured by the ratio of urinary lactulose to L-rhamnose (L:R) and absorption (carrier-mediated transport) as measured by the ratio of urinary D-xylose to 3-O-methyl-D-glucose (X:MG) and to determine whether these variables correlated with fecal quality. ANIMALS: 6 Miniature Poodles, 6 Standard Schnauzers, 6 Giant Schnauzers, and 6 Great Danes. PROCEDURE: A solution that contained lactulose and rhamnose or xylose and 3-O-methyl-D-glucose was administered orally to dogs that were 12, 22, 36, and 60 weeks old. Urine was collected 6 hours later, and urinary L:R and X:MG were calculated. Fecal moisture and scoring were recorded during the same periods. RESULTS: Age and breed did not affect intestinal absorption, and we did not detect a relationship between X:MG and fecal variables. In contrast, we detected significant effects of age and body size on intestinal permeability. Puppies (12 weeks old) and large dogs had higher intestinal permeability than adult (60 weeks old) and small dogs. The increased intestinal permeability in large dogs was associated with lower fecal quality as indicated by the significant positive correlations between L:R and fecal moisture (r, 0.61) and L:R and fecal scores (r, 0.86) in adult dogs. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: These results indicate that age and body size should be considered when assessing intestinal permeability by use of the L:R urinary excretion test in dogs. High intestinal permeability could be a possible cause of poor fecal quality in large dogs.  相似文献

Fed the same dry diet, large dogs show poorer fecal quality than small ones. A high colonic permeability could explain a low water and electrolyte net balance leading to high fecal water content. This experiment was conducted to evaluate colonic permeability in dogs varying in body size and to determine whether colonic permeability is related to fecal sodium concentration and fecal quality. Four breeds of dogs were used: six Miniature Poodles (MP), six Standard Schnauzers (SS), six Giant Schnauzers (GS) and six Great Danes (GD). Colonic permeability was evaluated using the ratio of urinary lactulose to sucralose (L:S) after oral administration. Fecal sodium concentration was measured by flame photometry. The urinary L:S ratio was significantly lower in GD, indicating a higher colonic permeability, than in the three other breeds (0.35 ± 0.12 for GD and 0.51 ± 0.05 for MP). GD also presented the higher fecal sodium concentrations and the poorest fecal quality. The higher fecal sodium concentration observed in GD could be explained by the higher colonic permeability and both these variables could be important explanations for higher fecal moisture in large dogs.  相似文献

Reference ranges for gastric emptying time (GET), small intestinal transit time (SITT), and colonic transit time of 1.5-mm and 5-mm radiopaque markers in healthy cats fed a high-fiber meal were determined, and the influence of low-dose diazepam intravenous injection on the gastrointestinal transit of the markers was examined. The mean GETs and SITTs, and the mean residence times (MRTs) and geometric centers (GCs) of markers in the colon were determined. The effect of intravenous diazepam injection and marker size on these parameters was examined. Diazepam injection had no significant influence on gastrointestinal transit. The GETs of the 1.5-mm markers were significantly more rapid than those of the 5.0-mm markers. There were no significant differences between the SITTs or GCs of the 1.5-mm and 5.0-mm markers. Reference values were developed for GET, SITT, and colonic transit of radiopaque markers for cats fed a high-fiber meal. Diazepam injection had no effect on these parameters.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were to assess overall electrolyte absorption capacity as well as fermentative activity in dogs varying in body size in order to verify whether these parameters can explain the poor faecal quality in large dogs. Four breeds of dogs were used: six Miniature Poodles (MP), six Standard Schnauzers (SS), six Giant Schnauzers (GS) and six Great Danes (GD). Net absorption rates of electrolytes were assessed by calculating the apparent digestibility of sodium and potassium and measuring their content in stool. Fermentative activity was calculated by measuring faecal concentrations of lactic acid and short-chain fatty acids. The results showed higher faecal concentrations of fermentation products and electrolytes as well as poorer digestibility of electrolytes in Giant Schnauzers and Great Danes. Strong positive correlations were found between these different parameters and stool quality (scores and moisture). Lower overall electrolyte absorption and higher fermentative activity could thus be factors capable of explaining poorer faecal quality in these two large dog breeds.  相似文献

Observations on food tolerance in dogs have shown that some breeds, especially the giant breeds, have a greater digestive sensitivity. One of the consequences common in these breeds is a higher faecal water content and a poor faecal quality. This could be explained, at least in part, by limited digestive capacity and function in giant breed dogs. In this report, the gastric emptying that represents one parameter of the digestive function was studied in large and giant breed dogs during their growth. Six Great Danes (GD) and six Giant Schnauzers (GS) were fed small radiopaque markers mixed with a test diet at 12, 22 and 36 weeks of age. Abdominal radiographs were made every 30 min for a period of 4 h and then hourly until 12 h. At 12 weeks of age, the gastric emptying pattern was similar in both breeds. However, from 22 weeks of age, the gastric emptying of the GD was significantly more rapid than that of GS. The gastric emptying of small markers tended to slow down in growing dogs, especially in GS. A significant positive correlation between the gastric emptying time of 50% of markers and the body weight was found. These results show that GD have a lower gastric retention time of foods, which could lead to a poor digestion and an altered absorption of nutrients. These could explained why digestive function and sensitivity could be different in dogs from different sizes and breeds.  相似文献

The objectives of the study were (i) to evaluate the effects of age and body size on the apparent digestibility of a dry expanded diet and (ii) to determine whether poor faecal quality could be related to lower nutrient utilization. Four breeds of dogs were used: six Miniature Poodles (MP), six Medium Schnauzers (MS), six Giant Schnauzers (GS) and six Great Danes (GD). Digestive trials were performed at 11, 21, 35 and 60 weeks of age. Faecal moisture and scoring were recorded at the same periods. Digestibility coefficients of all macronutrients increased significantly (p < 0.05) with age in all four breeds. Organic matter digestibility increased from 80.2 +/- 1.5 to 85.5 +/- 1.5% in MP; from 80.2 +/- 0.9 to 86.3 +/- 0.5% in MS; from 79.6 +/- 4.2 to 88.9 +/- 0.5% in GS and from 85.7 +/- 1.5 to 88.4 +/- 0.8% in GD. Crude protein digestibility increased from 74.5 +/- 4.0 to 81.5 +/- 1.9% in MP; from 74.3 +/- 3.9 to 82.6 +/- 0.9% in MS; from 71.8 +/- 6.0 to 85.9 +/- 0.9% in GS and from 80.8 +/- 4.6 to 84.8 +/- 1.3% in GD between 11 and 60 weeks of age, respectively. Mean faecal moisture also increased over the growth, except in GS. Nutrient digestibility was significantly higher in large dogs at all age periods. However, larger dogs showed lower faecal scores and increased faecal moisture. In conclusion, these results show (i) an effect of age and body size on nutrients digestibility and (ii) that the lower faecal quality observed in healthy large breed dogs does not appear related to lower nutrient utilization.  相似文献

Fed the same diet, large and giant-breed dogs have higher faecal moisture and increased frequency of soft stools than small ones. This could be the result of physiological differences, such as a different gastrointestinal transit time. In this study, we have correlated mean total transit time (MTT) with body size and faecal consistency in dogs varying in body size. Fifty dogs from 13 different breeds were used, from a Dachshund to a Great Dane. The MTT was determined using coloured plastic beads [Cummings and Wiggins, Gut, Vol. 17 (1976), p. 219], and faecal consistency was scored daily during the study. We confirmed the strong correlation between height at the shoulder (body size) and faecal score (r = 0.76; p < 0.0001). The MTT increased with body size, from 22 h for a Miniature Poodle to 59 h for a Giant Schnauzer. We found significant positive correlations (p < 0.0001) between MTT and body size as well as faecal scores (r = 0.71 and 0.70 respectively). In the present study, we observed an effect of body size on MTT. In our 50 healthy dogs a longer MTT was related to a poorer faecal quality. Previous studies reported no relationship between body size and the upper gastrointestinal transit time in healthy dogs. So, we hypothesized that body size would mainly affect colonic transit time and that a longer colonic residence time would be related to a poorer faecal quality by promoting fermentation activity.  相似文献

Determinations of gastric emptying time (GET) and small intestinal transit time (SITT) are useful in detecting gastrointestinal motility disorders and partial obstructions of the pylorus or small intestine. Barium-impregnated, polyethylene radiopaque spheres with diameters of 1.5 mm and 5.0 mm have been developed for quantitative assessment of gastrointestinal transit.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate GET and SITT using these radiopaque spheres in 10 healthy cats. The cats were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: fasted, fed, and fed plus sedation (acetylpromazine maleate 0.10 mg/kg subcutaneously). A repeated measures study design was used.
The mean GETs of 50%, 75%, and 90% of the 1.5-mm and the 5-mm spheres in the unfed cats were 0.36, 0.58, and 0.74 hours, and 0.41, 0.68, and 1.02 hours, respectively. These values were significantly (P ±.05) more rapid than the GETs of 50%, 75%, and 90% of the 1.5-mm and 5-mm spheres of either the sedated fed cats (4.39, 5.68, 6.65 and 5.15, 5.99, 6.91 hours) or the unsedated fed cats (6.43, 8.12, 9.06 and 7.49, 8.49, 9.22 hours).
The mean GETs of 50% and 75% of the 1.5-mm and 5-mm and of 90% of the 1.5-mm spheres were significantly ( P ±.05) more rapid in sedated than in unsedated fed cats. The GET of 50% of the 1.5-mm spheres was significantly more rapid ( P ±.05) than that of the 5-mm spheres in the fed cats. The mean SITTs, which ranged from 2.25 to 3.05 hours, were not significantly different ( P > .05) among the treatment groups or between the 1.5-mm and 5-mm spheres.
The GET of spheres given to fasted cats is significantly more rapid than that of fed cats. Subcutaneous injection of acetylpromazine speeds GET in fed cats. The SITT of small and large spheres was not influenced by feeding or by acetyl-promazine injection.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of morphine administration for 6 days on gastrointestinal tract function in healthy adult horses. ANIMALS: 5 horses. PROCEDURES: Horses were randomly allocated into 2 groups in a crossover study. Horses in the treatment group received morphine sulfate at a dosage of 0.5 mg/kg, IV, every 12 hours for 6 days. Horses in the control group received saline (0.9% NaCl) solution at a dosage of 10 mL, IV, every 12 hours for 6 days. Variables assessed included defecation frequency, weight of feces produced, intestinal transit time (evaluated by use of barium-filled spheres and radiographic detection in feces), fecal moisture content, borborygmus score, and signs of CNS excitement and colic. RESULTS: Administration of morphine resulted in gastrointestinal tract dysfunction for 6 hours after each injection. During those 6 hours, mean +/- SD defecation frequency decreased from 3.1 +/- 1 bowel movements in control horses to 0.9 +/- 0.5 bowel movements in treated horses, weight of feces decreased from 4.1 +/- 0.7 kg to 1.1 +/- 0.7 kg, fecal moisture content decreased from 76 +/- 2.7% to 73.5 +/- 2.9%, and borborygmus score decreased from 13.2 +/- 2.9 to 6.3 +/- 3.9. Mean gastrointestinal transit time was also increased, compared with transit times in control horses. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Morphine administered at 0.5 mg/kg twice daily decreased propulsive motility and moisture content in the gastrointestinal tract lumen. These effects may predispose treated horses to development of ileus and constipation.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To assess joint geometry and highlight potential evidence of physiologic incongruity in cubital (elbow) joints of large, small, and chondrodystrophic breeds of dogs. SAMPLE POPULATION: Nonarthritic elbow joints obtained from cadavers of mature dogs of large breeds (n = 19), small breeds (14), or chondrodystrophic breeds (8). PROCEDURE: Magnetic resonance imaging was used to quantify interosseous gaps at 6 defined positions and 2 sagittal planes of the humeroantebrachial region by use of a fat-suppressed 3-dimensional gradient-echo sequence. RESULTS: Interosseous gaps in the more medially located sagittal plane were significantly narrower at the level of the anconeal process than at any other position of the joint in large-breed dogs, compared with results for small- or chondrodystrophic-breed dogs. In both sagittal planes, the gaps were significantly wider at the center of the ulnar trochlear notch than at any other position. Significant correlation between body weight and width of the interosseous gaps was found only in large-breed dogs and was found in both sagittal planes at the center of the ulnar trochlear notch (r, 0.834 and r, 0.680, respectively). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In large-breed dogs, the interosseous gap was especially narrow at the level of the anconeal process and its diametric position. This suggests less ability to compensate intra-articular steps in dogs with short ulna syndrome, which predisposes to failure of the union between the anconeal process and olecranon. Geometric incongruity may be regarded as clinically normal in nonarthritic humeroulnar joints. The degree of geometric incongruity increases with body weight.  相似文献

Ten healthy dogs were fed 30 1.5 mm and 10 5 mm radiopaque markers (BIPS, MedID, Grand Rapids) mixed with sufficient quantities of a high fibre diet to meet 25% of their estimated daily caloric requirements. Abdominal radiographs were made at two hour intervals until 90% of the small and large markers had left the colon. The mean residence times (MRT) of each size of marker in the proximal, distal and total colon were calculated using kinetic analysis. The MRT's of the small markers were 4.9 hours (SD 4.4), 7.1 hours (SD 3.3) and 12.0 hours (SD 7.1) respectively. The MRT's of the large markers were not significantly different from the small markers except in the proximal colon where they were significantly shorter (3.2 hours, SD 2.3). Reference colonic filling and colonic transit curves for both sizes of markers were constructed. These may be useful to detect abnormal colonic transit in dogs.  相似文献

GASTRIC EMPTYING OF SOLID RADIOPAQUE MARKERS IN HEALTHY DOGS   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The gastric emptying of 1.5 mm diameter (small) and 5.0 mm diameter (large) radiopaque markers (BIPS) was assessed in 20 dogs. The markers were fed to the dogs in a test meal and abdominal radiographs were made hourly thereafter. Studies were repeated three times in each dog. The variation between two veterinarians interpreting the radiographs was low. The sex, age and day of the study did not have a significant effect on the lag phase or the time taken to empty 25%, 50% and 75% of the markers (T25, T50 and T75 respectively). There was a weak but significant positive correlation between the body weight and T50. There was no significant difference in gastric emptying parameters between the large and small markers.
The mean gastric emptying versus time curve of the small markers on day one was chosen to represent the reference curve for healthy dogs. The lag phase of the small markers on day one was 2.45 ± 2.04 hours, the T25 was 4.85 ± 2.15 hours, the T50 was 6.05 ± 2.99 hours and the T75 was 8.32 ± 2.72 hours (mean ± SD).  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine ultrasonographic characteristics of the thyroid gland in healthy small-, medium-, and large-breed dogs and evaluate the relationships of thyroid gland size and volume with body weight and body surface area (BSA). ANIMALS: 72 dogs of small (6 Toy and 6 Miniature Poodles), medium (12 Beagles), and large breeds (12 Akitas and 36 Golden Retrievers). PROCEDURE: Each dog's thyroid gland was examined ultrasonographically with a 10- to 5-MHz multifrequency linear-array transducer. Size, shape, echogenicity, and homogeneity of thyroid lobes were evaluated on longitudinal and transverse images. Thyroid lobe volume was estimated by use of the equation for an ellipsoid (pi/6 [length x height x width]). RESULTS: Thyroid lobes appeared fusiform or elliptical on longitudinal images and triangular or round to oval on transverse images. In most dogs, thyroid lobes were hyperechoic or isoechoic, compared with surrounding musculature, and had a homogeneous echogenic pattern. Mean length, width, height, and volume of thyroid lobes were significantly greater in Akitas and Golden Retrievers, compared with findings in Beagles or Poodles; mean length, width, and height were significantly greater in Beagles, compared with findings in Poodles. Total thyroid gland volume correlated with body weight (r = 0.73) and BSA (r = 0.74). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Among the dog breeds examined ultrasonographically, thyroid lobe size and volume were more variable than shape, echogenicity, and homogeneity. The correlation of thyroid gland volume with BSA suggests that size of the dog, rather than breed, should be considered when assessing thyroid glands ultrasonographically.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the pharmacokinetics and effects of the morphine antagonist N-methylnaltrexone (MNTX) on gastrointestinal tract function in horses when administered alone and in combination with morphine. ANIMALS: 5 healthy adult horses. PROCEDURES: Horses were treated with MNTX (1 mg/kg, IV), and serial blood samples were collected for determination of drug pharmacokinetics. For evaluation of effects on the gastrointestinal tract when administered alone, MNTX was administered at a dosage of 0.75 mg/kg, IV, twice daily for 4 days. For evaluation of effects when administered concurrently with morphine, MNTX (0.75 mg/kg, IV, q 12 hours) and morphine (0.5 mg/kg, IV, q 12 hours) were administered for 6 days. Gastrointestinal variables evaluated were defecation frequency, weight of feces produced, fecal moisture content, intestinal transit time, and borborygmus scores. RESULTS: The time-concentration data for MNTX disposition best fit a 2-compartment model with a steady-state volume of distribution of 244.6 +/- 21.8 mL/kg, t1/2 of 47.04 +/- 11.65 minutes, and clearance of 11.43 +/- 1.06 mL/min/kg. OBJECTIVE: To further define vertical patellar position, as measured by the ratio of patellar ligament length to patellar length (L:P), in large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifles and compare that to the L:P of large-breed dogs with medial patellar luxation (MPL). STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: Large-breed dogs (n = 50) with clinically normal stifle joints and 30 large-breed dogs with MPL. METHODS: Large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifle joints or MPL were identified and divided into groups (NORM and MPL, respectively). L:P values were determined for each dog by 4 observers from single lateral stifle radiographs. L:P was compared between NORM and MPL groups and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. RESULTS: All 4 observers found a significantly higher L:P (more proximally positioned patella) for the MPL group compared with the NORM group. Overall mean (+/-SEM) L:P were: NORM, 1.71+/-0.020 and MPL, 1.87+/-0.025. The 95% CI was determined to be 1.45-1.97 for the NORM group and 1.57-2.17 for the MPL group. CONCLUSIONS: Large-breed dogs with MPL had a significantly more proximal vertical patellar position compared with large-breed dogs with clinically normal stifles. Large-breed dogs with L:P values >1.97 are considered to have patella alta. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Proximal displacement of the patella within the femoral trochlear groove may play a role in MPL in large-breed dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there is a predis-position for lung lobe torsion (LLT) in Pugs and describe clinical findings associated with LLT in that breed, compared with findings in other breeds. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: 7 Pugs and 16 dogs of other breeds. PROCEDURE: Information collected from records included signalment, history, lung lobe affected, results of clinicopathologic testing, histologic findings, diagnostic imaging results, surgical treatment, and outcome. RESULTS: 23 dogs were diagnosed with LLT, 10 of which were large-breed dogs and 13 of which were small-breed dogs. Seven of the small-breed dogs were Pugs. Pugs with LLT were significantly overrepresented, compared with the general hospital population. Affected Pugs ranged in age from 4.5 months to 4 years (median, 1.5 years). Six of the 7 Pugs had no predisposing conditions, and 6 were male. Six Pugs survived to discharge. Of the other small- and large-breed dogs, 3 of 6 and 5 of 10 survived to discharge, respectively. None of the Pugs were readmitted for complications or recurrence. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicated that young male Pugs may be predisposed to developing spontaneous LLT. The prognosis for survival and resolution of clinical signs in Pugs with LLT appeared to be excellent. Factors contributing to the development of LLT in Pugs are not known.  相似文献

Prevalence of calcium oxalate uroliths in miniature schnauzers.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Epidemiologic data were evaluated from all dogs admitted to the University of Minnesota, Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UMVTH) between June 1981 and November 1989. Of 69,890 admissions, 2,077 were Miniature Schnauzers. Uroliths were retrieved from 63 of the 2,077 Miniature Schnauzers admitted. In 20 of the 63 urolith episodes, calcium oxalate was the predominant mineral identified. By comparison, calcium oxalate uroliths were identified in only 56 of the remaining 67,813 non-Miniature Schnauzer canine admissions. The odds that uroliths from Miniature Schnauzers were composed of calcium oxalate was 11.8 times greater than for other canine breeds evaluated at the UMVTH (95% confidence interval = 6.8 to 20.1). Data also were evaluated from files of uroliths retrieved from dogs and submitted to the Minnesota Urolith Center for quantitative mineral analysis, between June 1981 and November 1989. Of 3,930 uroliths analyzed, 615 (15.6%) uroliths were obtained from Miniature Schnauzers. of the 615 uroliths, 175 (28.4%) were calcium oxalate. By comparison, only 550 (16.6%) of the remaining 3,315 from dogs of breeds other than Miniature Schnauzers were calcium oxalate. The odds that uroliths submitted for analysis were composed of calcium oxalate was 2 times greater for Miniature Schnauzers than for dogs of other breeds (95% confidence interval = 1.6 to 2.4). Calcium oxalate uroliths were retrieved more frequently in males than females. The risk for males developing calcium oxalate uroliths was greater than 3 times the risk for females in both groups of data evaluated. The mean age of all Miniature Schnauzers admitted to the UMVTH with calcium oxalate uroliths was 9 years. Calcium oxalate uroliths were not detected in Miniature Schnauzers younger than 1.7 years.  相似文献

Background: The association between hypertriglyceridemia and pancreatitis remains obscure in dogs. A possible role of hypertriglyceridemia as a cause of pancreatitis in Miniature Schnauzers has been suspected. Hypothesis/Objectives: To compare serum triglyceride concentrations between Miniature Schnauzers with and without a recent history of pancreatitis. Animals: Seventeen Miniature Schnauzers with a history of pancreatitis (group 1) and 34 age‐matched Miniature Schnauzers without a history of pancreatitis (group 2) were prospectively enrolled. Methods: Prospective case‐control study. Two samples were collected from each of the 17 Miniature Schnauzers with pancreatitis: 1 during pancreatitis and 1 after clinical and biochemical resolution of pancreatitis. Serum triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were compared between group 1 (after resolution of pancreatitis) and group 2. Results: Miniature Schnauzers in group 1 were significantly more likely to have hypertriglyceridemia (>108 mg/dL) (71%) after resolution of pancreatitis than Miniature Schnauzers in group 2 (33%; odds ratio = 5.02; 95% confidence interval = 1.4–17.8; P= .0163). Serum triglyceride concentrations were significantly higher in dogs of group 1 (median: 605.0 mg/dL) after resolution of pancreatitis than in dogs of group 2 (median: 73.5 mg/dL; P= .002). Conclusions and Clinical Importance: Miniature Schnauzers with a history of pancreatitis were 5 times more likely to have hypertriglyceridemia than controls. Hypertriglyceridemia might be associated with the development of pancreatitis in some dogs of this breed. Additional studies are needed to further clarify the role of hypertriglyceridemia in the development of pancreatitis in Miniature Schnauzers as well as other dog breeds.  相似文献
