Two horses were admitted separately for evaluation and treatment of profound hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis without azotemia. One, an 11-year-old Quarter Horse mare, had been depressed and ataxic for 2 days. The other, a 2-year-old Quarter Horse colt, had a 6-week history of depression, anorexia, and weight loss. Both horses responded to fluid and electrolyte therapy, but required daily oral administration of sodium bicarbonate for maintenance. In each case, the diagnosis was renal tubular acidosis.  相似文献

Renal tubular acidosis (RTA) is characterized by altered renal tubular function resulting in hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis. The purpose of the study was to describe RTA in 16 horses. No breed or sex predilection was found. The mean age at onset of the disease was 7 years of age. The type of diet had no apparent effect on development of RTA. The most common clinical signs were depression, poor performance, weight loss, and anorexia. Initial blood work revealed a marked hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis in all horses and a compensatory respiratory response in most horses. Sixty-three percent (10/16) of the horses had some evidence of renal damage or disease. Initial treatment consisted of large amounts of sodium bicarbonate given intravenously and orally for the prompt correction of the acidosis. Response to treatment was largely dependent on the rate of sodium bicarbonate administration. Long-term oral supplementation with NaHCO3 was required for the maintenance of normal acid-base status in individual horses. Recurrence of RTA was noted in 56% (9/16) of the horses. Horses with evidence of renal disease had multiple relapses. RTA should be considered as a differential diagnosis in horses with vague signs of depression, weight loss, and anorexia. The pathogenesis of RTA in horses remains uncertain, but prompt recognition and early aggressive intravenous sodium bicarbonate therapy followed by long-term oral supplementation seem to be important to successful management.  相似文献

A 5-year-old female American Quarter Horse was determined to have immune-mediated hemolytic anemia after detection of a positive response to a direct Coombs' test. Penicillin-induced immune-mediated hemolytic anemia was confirmed via a direct antiglobulin test, using penicillin-coated RBC. The horse was clinically improved and the anemia resolved in response to supportive care and discontinuation of penicillin treatment. Penicillin should be considered a possible cause of immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in horses.  相似文献

SUMMARY Three Quarter Horse stallions and 5 of their 11 tested progeny were diagnosed as affected with the inherited autosomal dominant defect hyperkalaemic periodic paralysis in Victoria in 1992. The diagnoses were based on the appearance of clinical signs and associated increased plasma potassium concentrations in response to oral potassium loading. All affected horses were descendants of the American Quarter Horse Impressive. Indirect evidence indicates that at least 3 other affected Quarter Horse stallions have stood or are standing at stud in Australia. The clinical details of the affected horses are described and the size of the affected population in Australia is discussed.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare racing performance before and after prosthetic laryngoplasty for treatment of laryngeal hemiplegia in inexperienced (horses without at least one start before surgery) and experienced (horses with at least one start before surgery) Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racehorses. Medical records of 54 Thoroughbred and 18 Quarter Horse racehorses or horses intended for racing treated with prosthetic laryngoplasty and unilateral ventriculectomy for laryngeal hemiplegia were reviewed. Signalment, age at the time of surgery, resting endoscopic grade of laryngeal function, surgical procedure, and type of suture were recorded. Median performance index (PI), earnings, distance, and Beyer speed figure (BSF) per start for three races before and after surgery were compared, and factors associated with improved postsurgical performance were evaluated. Seventy-three percent of horses that had not raced before surgery and 84% of horses that competed in at least one race before surgery were able to return to racing after surgery. Fifty-nine percent and 27% of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, respectively, were able to improve their PI after surgery. Sixty-two percent and 20% of Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses, respectively, significantly increased their distance after surgery. Additionally, 61% and 66% of racehorses were able to increase their earnings and BSF after surgery, respectively. Horses treated with laryngoplasty and unilateral ventriculectomy have a good prognosis for return to racing. Inexperienced racehorses have a better prognosis for improvement after surgery than do experienced racehorses. Thoroughbred racehorses have a better success rate than Quarter Horse racehorses.  相似文献

Signs of mild colic, intermittent lethargy, and weight loss of 6 weeks' duration in a 2-year-old Quarter Horse gelding were attributed to persimmon (Diospyros virginiana) phytobezoar formation. Diagnosis of the phytobezoar was facilitated by gastric endoscopy. Signs of gastrointestinal tract obstruction were associated with a large phytobezoar in the lumen of the stomach, gastric ulceration, and obstruction of the small intestine (as a consequence of fragmentation of the primary bezoar). Conservative treatment, using mineral oil and dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate, was unsuccessful. A celiotomy was performed, and gastric impaction and partial obstruction of the small intestine associated with phytobezoar formation and fragmentation were identified. The horse made a complete recovery following removal of all phytobezoars. Persimmon phytobezoar should be considered in the fall and winter as a possible cause of lethargy, colic, and weight loss in horses allowed access to persimmon fruit.  相似文献

An adult Quarter Horse gelding (Case 1) was evaluated for tachypnoea and acute dysphagia. A 20-year-old Quarter Horse gelding (Case 2) was evaluated for respiratory stertor and severe, acute swelling of the head in the submandibular region. A physical examination, complete blood count, blood chemistry, upper airway endoscopy, and peripheral blood Anaplasma phagocytophilum polymerase chain reaction were completed for both horses. Both horses tested positive for A. phagocytophilum. The upper airway endoscopy for Case 1 revealed a feed contaminated pharynx, absent swallowing reflex, and left laryngeal hemiplagia. The upper airway endoscopy for Case 2 revealed severe diffuse pharyngeal swelling occluding the airway. Due to increased respiratory effort in Case 2, a tracheotomy was performed. In both horses, treatment consisted of intravenous oxytetracycline 6.6 mg/kg bwt i.v. q. 24 h for 2–3 days followed by minocycline 4 mg/kg bwt per os q. 12 h for 10–14 days. Both horses made full recoveries.  相似文献

Hereditary equine regional dermal asthenia (HERDA) results from a genetic mutation which affects the skin and other tissues of Quarter Horses and horses with Quarter Horse lineage. The disease HERDA has an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance and has become a significant concern in the Quarter Horse industry due to the high frequency of heterozygote carriers. Affected homozygous horses appear normal at birth; however, within the first 2 years of life they usually acquire loose, hyperextensible skin and wounds which result in disfiguring scars either spontaneously or from minor trauma. Some severely affected horses also develop haematomas and seromas. Consequently, most affected horses are subjected to euthanasia at an early age. No treatment options other than palliative therapy currently exist. As part of a five panel test ( http://www.aqha.com/News/News-Articles/2013/April/04292013-Genetic-Testing.aspx ) the American Quarter Horse Association presently requires DNA testing for HERDA on all breeding stallions. There are currently no restrictions on registration of horses heterozygous or homozygous for the HERDA mutation. Due to the autosomal recessive nature of the disease, Quarter Horse mares and horses of all breeds from HERDA‐associated bloodlines should also be tested.  相似文献

Subtotal dorsal cervical laminectomy was used to relieve spinal cord compression due to cervical vertebral malformation in 16 horses. The majority were Thoroughbred or Quarter Horse males, 1 to 4 years old. The caudal cervical vertebrae were involved in all but two instances. A Funkquist type B laminectomy was performed and the defect filled with a free autogenous nuchal fat graft. All horses recovered from surgery without complication or deterioration in neurological status. Neurological improvement occurred in 12 cases, including six that became sound. Three horses fractured a vertebral articular process and were euthanized. A modification to the shape of the laminectomy was adopted to reduce this complication.  相似文献

An 18‐year‐old Quarter Horse gelding was examined for haematuria of 6 weeks' duration. Rectal examination identified an enlarged left kidney and ultrasonographic examination of the kidney identified grossly abnormal renal architecture. Hand‐assisted laparoscopic nephrectomy was performed following laparoscopic exploration of the abdomen for metastatic disease. A laparoscopic stapling device was successfully used to transect and ligate the renal vasculature and ureter. Histopathological examination of the kidney identified renal cell carcinoma. A 7 month survival was documented following surgery. Unilateral nephrectomy should be considered a therapeutic or palliative procedure for horses with renal cell carcinoma.  相似文献

Objective – To describe the clinical and pathological findings in 2 adult horses with documented increases in intra-abdominal pressure (IAP), and to describe the direct puncture technique used to measure this pressure.
Series Summary – Two adult horses developed increases in IAP secondary to large-volume abdominal effusion. A 9-year-old Quarter Horse cross gelding was presented for evaluation of urinary and neurologic signs. Abdominal ultrasonographic examination showed a hepatic abscess along with abdominal effusion. A 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding was presented for evaluation of castration complications. A castration site infection extended into surrounding tissues, resulting in peritonitis, abdominal effusion, and severe cellulitis of the limbs. IAP measured in both horses was increased relative to reported equine reference values. Changes in hemodynamic parameters in both horses, notably increased central venous pressure, were consistent with those seen in other species in which intra-abdominal hypertension (IAH) and its sequellae have been documented.
New or Unique Information Provided – Extensive research and clinical literature guides management of humans with IAH and abdominal compartment syndrome. Knowledge of these conditions in companion animal and large domestic species is less well developed. Recent research has established reference values for standing, sedated and recumbent, anesthetized horses. Detailed reports of equine clinical cases of IAH have not been reported in the literature. This report provides information on the clinical, hemodynamic, and pathologic characteristics of 2 horses with measured increases in IAP, and describes the direct puncture technique used to perform these measurements.  相似文献

A 3-year-old Quarter Horse mare was presented for acute colic with bright red-black foul-smelling gastric reflux containing long rod-shaped bacteria consistent with Clostridium sp. and red-black urine. The serum creatinine concentration was 5.5 mg/dL (N = 0.9–1.7), and blood urea nitrogen was 41 mg/dL (N = 9–20). At necropsy, the stomach wall was diffusely thickened, hemorrhagic, and edematous. Histopathologically, hemorrhagic necrosis was evident, with numerous colonies of spore-forming rods within the submucosa. Clostridium perfringens was cultured from the stomach contents. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) genotyping was consistent with type A C. perfringens. Bilaterally, the kidneys were grossly enlarged, diffusely dark red-brown, and congested. The renal tubular epithelium was diffusely, acutely necrotic, with interstitial hemorrhage and massive accumulation of intratubular granular and proteinaceous casts. A diagnosis of massive hemolysis with hemoglobinuria and renal failure due to C. perfringens, type A infection was made. Alpha-toxin–induced intravascular hemolysis occurs rarely in humans and sheep. To our knowledge, this has not been described in horses with clostridial enterocolitis nor in equine clostridial gastritis.  相似文献

A 4-year-old Quarter Horse gelding with a history of acute trauma was presented to our faculty. This report describes the inciting injury, documented in a video, and the ultrasonographic diagnosis of a traumatic extrusion of the right lateral meniscus with an accompanying extra-articular hematoma and distal collateral ligament lesion in a competing Quarter Horse. The ultrasonographic diagnosis of a lateral meniscal injury directly correlated with postmortem findings and this type of lateral meniscal injury has not been previously described in detail.  相似文献

Two Quarter horses with weight loss had glucosuria, euglycemia, and a mild metabolic acidosis suggesting a proximal renal tubular defect. Further testing revealed transient generalized aminoaciduria, lactic aciduria, and glucosuria, indicating Fanconi syndrome. Both horses recovered with supportive therapy. This is the first report of acquired Fanconi syndrome in horses.  相似文献

The fungal organism Pseudallescheria boydii was isolated from the cornea of a Quarter Horse with ulcerative keratitis. Despite aggressive hourly medication through a subpalpebral lavage system, with drugs including miconazole and natamycin, the cornea developed a stromal abscess. Orbital exenteration was performed after 3 weeks. The fungal isolate was later determined to be resistant to all 8 antifungal drugs tested. Microscopic examination of the cornea revealed fungal hyphae throughout the corneal stroma and penetrating the Descemet membrane. Pseudallescheria boydii has not been implicated previously as a cause of keratomycosis in horses or in other domestic animals, although cases in human beings have been described.  相似文献

Occipitoatlantoaxial malformation was diagnosed in a 19-month-old mare of Appaloosa breeding and in a 3-year-old Quarter Horse gelding. Both horses had abnormal head and neck carriage since birth, but neurologic deficits did not become evident clinically until the horses reached 2 and 3 years of age, respectively. Palpation and manipulation of the base of the skull and cervical area proved to be useful diagnostically. Movement could not be elicited at the atlantooccipital joint but, in comparison with clinically normal horses, the range of dorsoventral motion at the atlantoaxial joint was increased. Alternate subluxation and relocation of this joint generated audible clicking sounds. Radiography revealed symmetric atlantooccipital fusion, with modification of the atlas, atlantoaxial joint, and axis. These findings were confirmed at necropsy.  相似文献

A 3-year-old Quarter Horse gelding admitted for evaluation of weight loss, signs of depression, and dermatitis of the coronary bands was found to have eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Intralesional nematodes identified as Strongylus edentatus were seen in multiple microscopic sections of the small colon, suggesting a parasitic cause of the disease.  相似文献

Bilateral renal dysplasia and nephron hypoplasia was diagnosed in a Quarter Horse foal with clinical signs of lethargy, convulsions, and diarrhea. Laboratory evaluation revealed anemia, hypoproteinemia, leukopenia, hyponatremia, hypochloremia, and hyposmolality. The foal also had high concentrations of serum creatinine, BUN, and phosphorus. Evaluation of urinary indices revealed a high ratio of urinary gamma-glutamyl-transferase activity to concentration of creatinine, as well as a high fractional clearance ratio of sodium and potassium. Intravenous treatment with saline solution (0.9% NaCl) and antimicrobials provided only temporary resolution of some of the abnormalities. Diagnosis was partly established by histologic evaluation of renal tissue obtained via an ultrasonographically guided biopsy and was confirmed at necropsy. Pathologic changes in the kidney were unique in that the size of the kidneys, along with the appearance and number of glomeruli, were essentially normal despite marked hypoplasia of nephron tubules in the medulla.  相似文献

An 18-month-old Quarter Horse filly was evaluated because of dorsal displacement of the soft palate associated with epiglottic dysfunction that caused exercise intolerance and an abnormal respiratory noise. The abnormality of the epiglottis was corrected by use of a sedative dose of xylazine hydrochloride. There was no familial predisposition to hyperkalemic periodic paralysis, which may cause similar laryngopharyngeal signs, and the horse did not respond to administration of acetazolamide. There was no known history of trauma that could have caused neuritis, which has also been suggested as a cause of laryngeal dysfunction. It was unusual that a complete response was obtained with xylazine hydrochloride, an alpha2-adrenergic agonist, although this drug has various effects on the respiratory tract in horses. It was also unusual that the response outlasted the sedative effect of the drug.  相似文献

It has been well documented that omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) confer a wide variety of health benefits to humans and animals. The current study was designed to evaluate the ability of n-3 PUFA to modulate the innate immune response in two diverse breeds of horses. Ten Quarter Horse and 10 American Miniature Horse mares were assigned to either an n-3-PUFA-supplemented or a control diet (five full-sized and five miniature mares/treatment) for 56 days. The treatment diet was designed to deliver 64.4 mg/kg body weight of combined eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid daily. Blood was collected through jugular venipuncture into heparinized tubes on days 0, 28, and 56. Serum PUFA analysis was conducted by gas chromatography. Peripheral blood mononuclear cell production of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) in response to toll-like receptor (TLR) ligands lipopolysaccharide, flagellin, and lipoteichoic acid was estimated using an equine-specific enyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Peripheral blood samples from day 56 were also analyzed for total and differential leukocyte counts and subjected to flow cytometric analysis. Body type did not affect basal or TLR-stimulated TNFα production. Serum PUFA analysis revealed a decrease in α-linolenic acid and substantial increases in arachidonic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid, and docosapentaenoic acid at both day 28 and day 56 in horses fed n-3 PUFA (P < .0001 for all). Dietary n-3 PUFA supplementation reduced (P < .05) unstimulated basal, but not TLR-stimulated, TNFα production by peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Supplementation with n-3 PUFA neither affected total or differential leukocyte counts nor selected cell surface markers. These results suggest that n-3 PUFA supplementation in the horse can modify circulating PUFA and alter the inflammatory response by reducing basal TNFα production. Furthermore, under conditions of the current study and considering the end points evaluated, the American Miniature Horse could potentially be used as a model for full-sized horse breeds.  相似文献
