Summary

Little information is available about gait characteristics and the level of performance in racehorses. The aim of that cross-sectional experiment was to study the relationships between some locomotor variables and the level of performance of trotter racehorses. A total of 104 horses from 3 to 7 years old performed a four-step locomotor test on the track with an accelerometric device: Equimetrix™. The population was divided into two groups on the basis of their official performance index: Index of TRot (ITR). These two groups were: an elite performers group (n=52) and a medium performers group (n=52). Locomotor variables: stride frequency, stance and propulsion durations, stride length, symmetry, regularity, dorsoventral, longitudinal and lateral activities were calculated at four different speeds (8.5, 11, 11.7 m/s and maximal speed). The variables were compared between two performance groups by an analysis of variance. The main results indicated that elite performers presented significantly higher stride frequency, longer stance and propulsion durations at submaximal and maximal speed. In conclusion, biomechanical characteristics of trotter racehorses, such as stride frequency and propulsion duration, might be useful criteria to quantify gait efficiency in trotter racehorses.  相似文献

This review considers standardized exercise testing which is, routinely used for French Trotters in the field. Track testing provides a more limited range of measurements than treadmill testing, but has the advantage of being performed in the horse's natural environment. Various measurements such as heart rate during exercise and blood lactate concentration after exercise may be measured on the track and lead to the calculation of physiological variables such as V200 (velocity corresponding to a 200 bpm heart rate) and V4 (velocity corresponding to a 4 mmol/L blood lactate concentration). V4 is related to the onset of blood lactate accumulation and relates to the aerobic capacity of the horse, as horses with high values for V4 have higher aerobic capacities. Although V4 is calculated during submaximal intensity exercise, it is related to racing performance and seems to be the most important measurement to assess changes in fitness. V200 represents the cardiac capacity of the horse during exercise and is close to V4 in mature horses. To explain further the clinical usefulness of track testing, and to help interpret both V4 and V200 variables, examples of exercise tests in 3-year-old French Trotters are presented here. These results show that changes may occur in V4 and V200 according to different factors such as the horse's physical ability and either training or disease states. It underlines the importance of exercise tests for both trainers and veterinarians and how they may help in the evaluation of a horse's performance ability; in defining the intensity of a training program, and also in the early detection of underlying diseases.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the relationships between the concentrations of potassium, sodium, calcium and magnesium of plasma and muscle in horses, as interactions between these ions can be important in the development of muscle cell injury. Blood samples and gluteal muscle biopsies were taken from 20 healthy Standardbreds to determine the potassium concentration in plasma (cK+(P)), red blood cells (cK+(RBC)), and muscle (cK+(M)), and the calcium and magnesium concentrations in plasma and muscle. No correlations were found between cK+(P), cK+(RBC), and cK+(M). Significant positive correlations were found between cK+(M) and muscle magnesium (p<0.01); and cK+(P) and plasma calcium (p<0.005). Significant negative correlations were found between cK+(M) and the percentage of muscle water (p<0.005); and the muscle magnesium and calcium concentrations (p<0.02).  相似文献

This study examined whether body composition was predictive of competitive success in elite standardbreds (STB). Rump fat and muscle thickness (MTH) (vastus lateralis/intermedius [VL], extensor carpi radialis [ECR]) were measured in vivo in male n=6; female n=8 by B-mode ultrasound. Percentage body fat (%fat) was calculated from rump fat. There were no gender differences for age, body mass (males 432+/-11 kg; females 443+/-13 kg), fat-free mass (FFM) (males 400+/-12 kg; females 400+/-11 kg), ECR MTH (males 61+/-2 cm; females 60+/-2 cm) or race time (RT) (males 113+/-3 s; females 114+/-2 s). Males had less (P<0.05) fat mass (males 32+4 kg; females 44+/-3 kg) and %fat (males 7.4+/-0.9%; females 9.9+/-0.5%) and larger (P<0.05) VL MTH (males 88+/-7 cm; females 81+/-3 cm). RT was correlated to %fat and fat mass in males (r=0.89; r=0.82, P<0.05) not females (r=0.51; r=0.14). FFM tended to relate to RT in males (r=-0.76, P=0.07) and females (r=-0.59, P=0.12). Combined %fat and FFM data were correlated to RT (%fat r=0.70, P<0.01; FFM r=-0.65, P<0.01). RT was not correlated to MTH (VL r=-0.28; ECR r=-0.31). In conclusion, FFM was related to RT in elite STB with %fat negatively related to RT in males.  相似文献

Muscle biopsies were taken from the middle gluteal muscle of 28 Standardbred trotters, 3-4 years of age. The 13 horses in Group T were trained consistently from 18 months of age, whereas the 15 horses in Group UT were not exposed to any systematic training before 3 years of age. Group T horses had a lower percentage of Type IIB fibres (31%) than did Group UT horses (39%). Citrate synthase (CS) activity, representing oxidative capacity, was higher in Group T (72 mmol kg-1 min-1) than in Group UT (47 mmol kg-1 min-1). Biopsies were taken from 4 horses in each group when they were foals and then annually until 3-4 years of age. Results from this study indicate that regular training of Standardbreds from 18 months of age resulted in increased CS activity and a decrease in the percentage of Type IIB fibres. This study shows that training, not growth, is the main factor that induces a high oxidative capacity and a high Type IIA/IIB fibre ratio in muscle of Standardbred trotters.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to establish normal echocardiographic values of healthy Standardbred trotters not published previously. Twenty-three clinically normal horses weighing between 350 and 490 kg were examined in the same manner: first a thorough physical and then detailed echocardiographic examination were performed. Standardised two-dimensional (2D) and guided M-mode echocardiographic imaging techniques were used to measure interventricular septal thickness (IVS), left ventricular internal diameter (LVID), left ventricular wall thickness (LVW), left atrial internal diameter (LAID) in end-systole (s) and end-diastole (d) and aortic diameter (AOD) in end-diastole. Mean, range and standard deviation of the different parameters were calculated. The mean values (in centimetres) were as follow (2D/M-mode): IVSs: 4.6/4.7; IVSd: 3.1/3.0; LVIDs: 7.0/7.0; LVIDd: 10.7/10.7; LVWs: 3.9/3.9; LVWd: 2.7/2.7; LAIDs: 10.4/-; LAIDd: 11.3/-; AODd: 7.2/-. Results of two-dimensional and M-mode measurements were compared to each other and to normal values obtained from other breeds.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of short intense exercise on plasma amino acid concentrations in trotters and to test the repeatability of plasma amino acids concentration in samples obtained on two independent days under field conditions. Plasma amino acid concentrations were analysed in blood samples of 36 standardbred trotters before and after intense exercise over a distance of 2000 m. Sampling was repeated in 20 horses after 35 days. Exercise intensity was estimated from post‐exercise lactate levels. Horses were divided in two groups according to a cut‐off lactate concentration at 15 mmol/l. The plasma concentrations of alanine, aspartate, glutamate, isoleucine, leucine, lysine and taurine increased and arginine, asparagine, citrulline, glutamine, glycine, histidine, methionine, serine, tryptophan and 3‐methylhistidine decreased after exercise. Ornithine, threonine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and valine concentrations remained constant. Higher intensity of exercise significantly decreased tryptophan and increased taurine concentrations. Sampling day had a significant effect on the absolute pre‐ and post‐exercise amino acid concentrations. Exercise had a significant influence on the concentrations of most plasma amino acids in trotters. These changes could reflect shifts between the free amino acid compartments, but there were also some indications for muscle catabolism. The amino acid supply of sporting horses could be of specific significance for maintaining muscle integrity and for the improvement of post‐exercise recovery of competition horses.  相似文献

Six trained Standardbred trotters exercised on a racetrack on 2 days with a 3-day interval. On both exercise days the horses trotted three different exercise bouts with increasing intensity with 60-min intervals. Exercise-induced stress was manifested as leucocytosis, an increase in the neutrophil:lymphocyte (N:L) ratio, and increased capacity to produce reactive oxygen species in the peripheral blood as indicated by an increase in whole blood chemiluminescence. The leucocytosis was mainly due to neutrophilia, which lasted for 6 h. Production of reactive oxygen species per single neutrophil showed no significant change during a day of exercise, but was lower on the second exercise day. The cortisol concentrations and N:L ratio, used as indicators of stress, behaved differently: Cortisol did not change significantly after exercise, whereas the N:L ratio increased. These results suggest that in trained horses, the N:L ratio is a sensitive indicator of stress of short duration, and an attenuated N:L response can be taken as an indicator of adaptation to exercise stress.  相似文献

Five Standardbred trotters with red cell hypervolaemia (RCHV) were compared before and after removal of approximately 22% (36 ml/kg bwt) of the total blood volume in order to evaluate the haemodynamic responses, haemorheological alterations and oxygen transport during exercise to fatigue. Data were recorded during submaximal exercise at 4 different speeds on a treadmill and then during continued running at the highest speed step until fatigue. Oxygen uptake (VO2), pulmonary artery pressure (PAP), systemic artery pressure (SAP), heart rate (HR), haematocrit and haemoglobin concentrations (Hb) were measured. Arteriovenous O2 content difference (C(a-v)O2), pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and total systemic resistance (TSR) were calculated. Whole blood and plasma viscosity and erythrocyte aggregation tendency were determined with a rotational viscometer. Endoscopy was performed after exercise. ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Phlebotomy resulted in a decrease in haematocrit and Hb during the course of exercise. Blood and plasma viscosity were lower and erythrocyte aggregation tendency was higher after phlebotomy. Throughout exercise, including submaximal work and continued running to fatigue, PAP, SAP, PVR, TSR and C(a-v)O2 were lower after phlebotomy. HR was higher after phlebotomy during submaximal exercise. Oxygen delivery and VO2 were lower after phlebotomy in the period from submaximal exercise to fatigue. Run time to fatigue was shorter after phlebotomy. Four horses showed exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) before phlebotomy and the degree of bleeding was diminished but not abolished after phlebotomy. The reductions in PVR, TSR, PAP and SAP after phlebotomy were probably a result of reduced blood viscosity. In conclusion, although a 22% reduction in blood volume improved the haemodynamic and haemorheological parameters and the degree of EIPH, it was found that RCHV trotters have to rely on high oxygen delivery to the working muscles for maintenance of maximal performance.  相似文献

This study evaluates how strenuous training, age and lameness influence the release of cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (sf-COMP), aggrecan and collagen type II into synovial fluid in 28 (19.5-40 months) Standardbred trotters (STB), during a long-term training programme (24 months). All the horses were trained by the same trainer and were healthy on entering the training programme. Synovial fluid (sf) from the left middle carpal joint in each subject was sampled every third month. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to determine the concentrations of sf-COMP, sf-aggrecan and sf-collagen type II. Concentration of sf-COMP decreased with increasing age and total days of training. The concentration of sf-COMP was found similarly related to both age and total days of training, so they could not be differentiated. It was also shown that the concentration of collagen type II degradation products increased with total days of training. The study shows that extensive and long-term training programme induces metabolic changes in articular cartilage exemplified by reduced release and synthesis of COMP. This is most likely due to strenuous training leading to inappropriate load on the articular cartilage.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to use available information about a group of Standardbred trotters collected during the first three years of life to predict the risk of lameness in these horses when they reach three years of age. In a previous study on the same population, a sire index defined as the frequency of lameness within each progeny group and presence of radiographic changes other than palmar/plantar bony fragments in the metacarpo- and metatarsophalangeal joints, were found to be significant predictors of the likelihood of developing lameness. The additional variables used in the present study were training and feeding of the horses, information that was collected retrospectively up to the time of clinical examination.A total of 265 three-year-old Standardbred trotters were randomly sampled for an epidemiological study of lameness. Eighty horses were classified as sound and 185 horses as lame, with moderate and severe signs in 138 and 47 horses, respectively. The sire index was found to be significant for predicting lameness (P<0.01), the risk of lameness increasing approximately 2.0 times for every 10% increase in sire index. Training and dietary parameters did not influence the risk of lameness significantly.  相似文献

To assess the significance of radiographic signs of sclerosis of the third carpal bone (C3) in young Standardbred trotters in relation to performance, lameness and bone turnover both carpi in 14 Standardbred trotters were radiographically and scintigraphically examined 6 times, from the beginning of speed training until the beginning of racing, between the mean ages of 20 and 42 months. At the end of the study 8 horses had raced in official qualifying races and 14 limbs in 11 horses had been diagnosed with carpal lameness. All horses but 2 developed sclerosis and all but one had increased bone turnover in the C3 area by scintigraphy. C3 sclerosis increased continuously over time and with increased performance. Carpal lameness was significantly associated with progression of sclerosis but in most cases sclerosis developed without concomitant signs of carpal lameness. No association between carpal lameness and increased scintigraphic uptake was found, but horses that had qualified for racing had significantly higher C3 to carpus ratio of radiopharmaceutical uptake. We conclude that there is a continuous increase in C3 radiographic sclerosis with time in young Standardbred trotters in professional training, but radiographic sclerosis appears to be of limited value as an indicator of clinical carpal disease or level of performance in Standardbred trotters.  相似文献

Heat shock protein (HSP) expression is an adaptive mechanism against the disruption of cell homeostasis during exercise. Several antioxidant supplementation strategies have been used to enhance tissue protection. In this study, we examined the effects of a redox modulator, α-lipoic acid (LA) on HSP responses in six standardbred trotters following intense aerobic exercise. DL–LA supplementation (25 mg kg−1 d−1) for five weeks increased the resting levels of HSP90 (1.02 ± 0.155 in control and 1.26 ± 0.090 after supplementation in arbitrary units) and the recovery levels of inducible HSP70 (0.89 ± 0.056 in control and 1.05 ± 0.089 after supplementation in arbitrary units) in skeletal muscle. Furthermore, LA increased skeletal muscle citrate synthase activity at rest and lowered the blood lactate concentration during exercise without any changes in the heart rate. LA had no effect on concentrations of HSP60, HSP25 or GRP75 in skeletal muscle. LA decreased the exercise-induced increases in plasma aspartate aminotransferase and creatine kinase concentrations during recovery. Our results suggest that LA supplementation may enhance tissue protection and increase oxidative capacity of the muscle in horse.  相似文献

The susceptibility of geese of different genotypes and sexes to force-feeding, some plasma biochemical parameters (thyroid hormones, cholesterol, retinoids, total protein and albumin) of force-fed geese, and the relationship between force-feeding, fat storage and the above-mentioned parameters were studied. Sixty (30 male and 30 female) geese of three genotypes (Hungarian, Landes and their crossbred called Babat Hybrid) were divided in two groups at 12 weeks of age. Geese in one group (5 males and 5 females from each genotype) received mixed feeding ad libitum. Birds in the other group were force-fed with maize. After 3 weeks all birds were bled, blood samples were taken, and the above-mentioned plasma parameters were determined. Thyroxine (T4) levels were significantly lower in force-fed (11.6 +/- 3.5 ng/ml) than in control geese (22.7 +/- 4.09 ng/ml). Plasma triiodothyronine (T3) level was also lower in the force-fed than in the control group, but the difference was not significant (1.87 +/- 0.23 ng/ml and 2.11 +/- 0.28 ng/ml, respectively). Plasma total protein (TP, 45.2 +/- 4.5 g/l), albumin (ALB, 16.51 +/- 2.8 g/l), beta-carotene (BC, 3504 +/- 3107 micrograms/l), retinol (ROL, 1160 +/- 505 micrograms/l), retinyl palmitate (RP, 1745 +/- 405 micrograms/l) and total cholesterol (TCh, 4.32 +/- 0.55 mmol/l) levels were elevated in the force-fed group as compared to the control (TP = 36.4 +/- 5.1 g/l, ALB = 15.6 +/- 0.9 g/l, BC = 1657 +/- 1681 micrograms/l, ROL = 687 +/- 375 micrograms/l, RP = 1398 +/- 607 micrograms/l, and TCh = 2.83 +/- 1.98 mmol/l). All differences were significant except those found for albumin and beta-carotene. No significant sex- or genotype-related effects were observed for these parameters.  相似文献
