Fish stocks found on lagoon bottoms and near reefs are characterized by a high diversity and heterogeneous habitat which make stock estimation difficult. In particular, it is necessary to combine several methods in order to evaluate the major components of these stocks. The present study aimed at estimating reef fish stocks in the Northern Province of New Caledonia, a region where they represent a major target for the local fishermen. These estimates were based on experimental fishing with handlines and bottom longlines. Handlines were used to assess the stocks near reefs, and longlines for those in areas away from reefs and on lagoon soft bottoms. Handline stations (363) were sampled in three different regions (west, north and east lagoons) and three biotopes (nearshore, middle lagoon and barrier reef). A total of 104 species were caught, the major families being Lethrinidae, Lutjanidae and Serranidae. Species composition and catch per unit of effort (CPUE) varied among regions and biotopes. In particular, the north zone showed characteristics of an unexploited area with very high yields. An increase in CPUE and fish size from the coast towards the barrier reef and with increasing depth was observed in all regions. Correlations between CPUE from handlines and the numerical density and biomass estimates from underwater visual censuses (UVC) performed on nearby reefs were significant. A total of 206 longline stations were sampled in the west and east regions. A total of 80 species were caught, the major families being the same as those caught in stations with handlines with the addition of Carangidae. The CPUE of longlines was significantly correlated with numerical density and biomass estimates made by UVC along the longlines. Stock estimates based on the correlations between CPUE from handlines or longlines and UVC estimates indicate that 90 % of the lagoon stock were found on soft bottoms and near reefs. Reefs, despite biomasses that were five times larger than soft-bottom and near-reef areas, made only a small contribution to total stock. The ratio between density and CPUE was highest for the lowest densities, thus indicating that fishing efficiency increased with density. Comparison of handline catch performed around reefs and UVC data from nearby reefs suggests that there were strong relationships between the fish assemblages of these two biotopes.  相似文献

Lagoon fish in New Caledonia are mainly caught by artisanal fisheries and subsistence fishing. Reef fish are the major component of this catch. The present study aimed at estimating these reef fish standing stocks and at finding the main factors influencing the distribution of these fish. Sampling of 904 stations was stratified according to three zones (north, east and west) and three reef types (barrier, intermediate and fringing). Fish communities exhibited strong heterogeneity in their distribution, showing higher biomass (maximum of 447 g·m–2) and total standing stock (43 000 tonnes) in the north zone than in the east and west zones. Similarly, observed patterns were dependent on reef types: higher biomass and total standing stock being observed on barrier reefs than on intermediate or fringing reefs. The total standing stocks, which were about 65 000 t, were mainly composed of herbivorous fish families such as the Acanthuridae and Scaridae. The differences in the patterns of distribution of species, individuals and standing stocks between reef types may be explained by variations in terrestrial influences and reef morphology, whereas differences among zones were most likely due to accessibility of fishing areas and fishing pressure. The latter is almost non-existent in the north zone, which can thus be considered to be almost unexploited commercially. This most likely explains the high proportion, 77 %, of long-lived species in the biomass of this zone. The results might have implications in management of reefs elsewhere in the South Pacific, for which similar data are only scarcely available.  相似文献

Channel catfish feed intake and growth decline with temperature, but different dietary lipids might sustain performance during cool weather. Catfish at a suboptimal temperature (22°C) were fed 32% protein commercial floating pellets supplemented with 2% soybean oil (SBO), menhaden oil (MFO), or flaxseed oil (FLX). After 12 weeks, fish were counted and weighed, then health assays and proximate and fatty acid analysis of fillets were conducted. Weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and survival were similar among treatments, indicating limited potential of different lipids to improve growth at low temperatures. However, the favorable feed conversion ratios (FCRs; ≤1.6) indicated that feeding at 22°C was worthwhile to maintain good condition of catfish. Across diets, the unsaturated fatty acids in muscle lipids increased. The FLX and MFO both increased the n-3 HUFA in the fillet, but FLX was less effective. Unfortunately, both FLX and MFO reduced sensory properties of the fillet relative to the SBO control.  相似文献

The desaturation of [1-14C]18:3n-3 to 20:5n-3 and 22:6n-3 is enhanced in an essential fatty acid deficient cell line (EPC-EFAD) in comparison with the parent cell line (EPC) from carp. In the present study, the effects of competing, unlabeled C18 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), linoleic (18:2n-6), -linolenic (18:3n-3), -linolenic (18:3n-6) and stearidonic (18:4n-3) acids, on the metabolism of [1-14C]18:3n-3 were investigated in EPC-EFAD cells in comparison with EPC cells. The incorporation of [1-14C]18:3n-3 in both cell lines was significantly reduced by competing C18 PUFA, with the rank order being 18:4n-3>18:3n-3 = 18:2n-6>18:3n-6. In the absence of competing PUFA, radioactivity from [1-14C]18:3n-3 in EPC cells was predominantly recovered in phosphatidylethanolamine followed by phosphatidylcholine. This pattern was unaffected by competing n-6PUFA, but n-3PUFA reversed this pattern as did essential fatty acid deficiency in the presence of all competing PUFA. The altered lipid class distribution was most pronounced in cells supplemented with 18:4n-3. Competing C18 PUFA significantly decreased the proportions of radioactivity recovered in 22:6n-3, pentaene and tetraene products, with the proportions of radioactivity recovered in 18:3n-3 and 20:3n-3 increased, in both cell lines. However, the inhibitory effect of competing C18 PUFA on the desaturation of [1-14C]18:3n-3 was significantly greater in EPC-EFAD cells. The magnitude of the inhibitory effects of C18 PUFA on [1-14C]18:3n-3 desaturation was dependent upon the specific fatty acid with the rank order being 18:4n-3>18:3n-3>18:2n-6, with 18:3n-6 having little inhibitory effect on the metabolism of [1-14C]18:3n-3 in EPC cells. The differential effects of the C18 PUFA on [1-14C]18:3n-3 metabolism were consistent with mass competition in combination with increased desaturation activity in EPC-EFAD cells and the known substrate fatty acid specificities of desaturase enzymes. However, the mechanism underpinning the greater efficacy with which the unlabeled C18PUFA competed with [1-14C]18:3n-3 in the desaturation pathway in EPC-EFAD cells was unclear.  相似文献

The Great East Japan Earthquake and accompanying tsunamis occurred on 11 March 2011, causing huge damage to marine organisms. The invasive naticid gastropod Laguncula pulchella (Euspira fortunei), which was introduced with the imported clam Ruditapes philippinarum from China and Korea, survived the earthquake. The “growth break line” observed on the shell surface in over 90% of the individuals collected in Matsushima Bay and Matsukawa-ura Lagoon after the tsunamis was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Each shell presented three layers before and three after the growth break. However, the fracture surface consisted of five layers—two prismatic and three crossed lamellar—around the growth break line. This suggests that shell formation temporarily ceased following the tsunamis and that the five-layered shell may have developed in response to the stress caused by the tsunamis. The newly formed middle layer became thinner after the “tsunami break,” which may be the result of a rapid change in the mineralization process, including rapid shell growth and/or repair. These results suggest that the damage to and forcible removal of habitats by the tsunamis was stressful for L. pulchella. A decrease in or the cessation of shell formation after a tsunami may be a common phenomenon in mollusks that inhabit tidal flats.  相似文献

The effects of (ip, 10 injections over 20 days) of melatonin (75 g 100 g–1 BW), the serotonin (5-HT)-synthesis blocker, para-cholorophenylalanine (p-CPA, 10 mg 100g–1 BW) and the catecholamine-synthesis blocker, -methylparatyrosine (-MPT, 10 mg 100 g–1 BW) on gonadotropin (GTH) secretion and ovarian activity were studied in Heteropneustes fossilis during late preparatory to early prespawning (April–May). The treatments resulted in significant reductions of plasma GTH and estradiol-17 levels, the gonadosomatic index, frequency distribution of vitellogenic and postvitellogenic oocytes, and ovarian and serum 32p-labelled alkali-labile phosphoprotein (a marker of vitellogenic activity). Most of the oocytes were nonvitellogenic or had undergone atretic changes. The hepatic 32-phosphoprotein content increased significantly over the saline control value. The effects were similar and pronounced in the p-CPA and melatonin-treated groups but were moderate in the -MPT-treated group. Hypothalamic 5-HT content and turnover were significantly inhibited in the p-CPA and melatonin-treated groups but the content and turnover of catecholamines were not. The -MPT treatment decreased significantly the content and turnover of dopamine (DA), noradrenaline (NA), and adrenaline (A) but did not influence the 5-HT content or turnover. These results suggest that 5-HT, NA and A are stimulatory to GTH secretion and that melatonin may act on the serotonergic system to inhibit the pituitary-gonadal axis.to whom correspondence should be addressed.A part of the results was presented at the International Workshop on Pineal gland: Its molecular signals and published as an abstract in Neuroendocrinol. The surf Spisula solida and the striped venus Chamelea gallina clams support important fisheries in Europe. These fisheries have been affected by inter‐annual fluctuations in stock abundance and recruitment failures. Aquaculture could contribute to address these problems through the production of larvae or juveniles for stock‐enhancement programmes. In the present study, the prerequisites to produce these species in hatchery were established. Of the different methods used to obtain gametes (thermal stimulation, scarification and flow through), C. gallina spawned in the flow through only. By its turn, the best method for obtaining gametes for S. solida was stripping. Higher survivals of D‐larvae were found at 15 and 17°C. The greatest larval survival and growth rates were obtained from larvae fed Isochrysis aff. galbana (T‐iso). First C. gallina and S. solida pediveliger larvae were found at day 8 and day 26 respectively. The presence of metamorphosed larvae found even in the unfed treatment for C. gallina and for S. solida is an advantage for aquaculture production. After metamorphosis, the S. solida juveniles' survival was quite low, whereas there was no mortality for C. gallina juveniles reared without substrate regardless the diet provided. Juveniles fed the binary diet (Chaetoceros calcitrans ‐ C. cal + T.iso) and the monodiet T‐iso showed relatively higher growth in shell length and weight than C. cal. The hatchery production of these two species was possible, however the results of this study showed that C. gallina can be more attractive for aquaculture than S. solida.  相似文献

The binding characteristics of 17,20,21-trihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (20-S) to plasma membranes prepared from the testes and sperm of spotted seatrout (Cynoscion nebulosus) were investigated using a filtration method to retain the bound 20-S. A single class of high affinity (Kd = 17.9 nM), low capacity (Bmax = 0.072 nM g-1 testes) binding sites was identified by saturation and Scatchard analyses on testicular membranes of spermiating spotted seatrout. A corresponding receptor (Kd = 22.17 nM, Bmax = 0.00261 nM ml-1 milt) was also detected in spermatozoan membrane preparations. The rates of 20-S association and dissociation were rapid, both had Thalfs of less than 1 min. Competition studies indicated that the receptor was highly specific for 20-S. 17,20-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one, which had the highest affinity of the other steroids tested, had a relative binding affinity (RBA) of 14.3%. Progesterone, 11-deoxycortisol and testosterone competed with an order of magnitude less affinity (RBA's of 7.4, 1.8 and 1.1%, respectively). Estradiol displayed low affinity for the receptor (RBA = 0.4%) and cortisol did not cause any displacement at 1000-fold excess concentration. Specific 20-S receptor binding was detected in plasma membranes from testes of both spermiating and non-spermiating seatrout and on spermatozoa. Prolonged incubation of testicular fragments from a spermiating fish with gonadotropin (15 IU ml-1 human chorionic gonadotropin) or forskolin (10 µM) caused a 2–3 fold increase in membrane receptor binding. Previous studies have shown that gonadotropin-induced upregulation of the 20-S plasma membrane receptor in seatrout ovaries is required for the oocytes to become responsive to 20-S and undergo final maturation. The existence of a 20-S membrane receptor on sperm and its upregulation in the testes by gonadotropin raises the possibility that final maturation of spermatozoa in male seatrout may be regulated by a similar mechanism.  相似文献

The implications of temperature on bioenergetics for barramundi (Lates calcarifer) were defined in an improved factorial model that encompassed revised parameters accounting for effects over the temperature range of 16–39 °C and size range of 10–3000 g. A revised growth function describing weight gain by barramundi as a function of fish weight and temperature was derived from farm and laboratory data and included a term for a shift in optimal temperature with fish size: Gain (g fish?1 day?1) = (K + xT + yT 2 + zT3) * (weight)ax+b. Maintenance energy and protein demand functions were also derived on a similar form, and all three functions combined to form the basis of a factorial model for energy and protein demand. Using this model, optimal iterative feed specifications were defined for a range of fish sizes at temperatures of 25, 30 and 35 °C. A feed demand model was also developed based on the demand for digestible energy (DE) at each of these temperatures. The model shows that at high temperatures (35 °C), there is an increase in digestible protein (DP) to DE demand, and that with increasing size, there is a decrease in the DP to DE demand.  相似文献

A marine fish oil, Marinol K (MO) and borage oil (BO) were used to formulate diets relatively rich in eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA; 20:5(n-3)] and -linolenic acid [GLA; 18:3(n-6)], respectively. The diets were fed to duplicate groups of juvenile turbot (Scophthalmus maximus) of initial weight 1.4 g for a period of 12 weeks. No differences were observed in final weights either between duplicate tanks or between dietary treatments. Mortalities in the MO-fed group were significantly greater than in the BO-fed group. In the MO-fed group, 7 out of 12 fish sampled for histological analysis showed a pronounced liver histopathology whereas only 1 of 12 fish sampled in the BO-fed group showed slight pathology. EPA levels were increased 2.2-fold and its elongation product, 22:5(n-3), was increased 1.8-fold while arachidonic acid [AA; 20:4(n-6)] was decreased by 30% in MO-fed fish compared to the initial carcass composition. GLA was increased 53-fold and its elongation product dihomo--linolenic acid [DHGLA; 20:3(n-6)] was increased 16-fold while AA was reduced by 90% in BO-fed fish compared to the initial carcass composition. The amount of triacylglycerol in liver of BO-fed fish was significantly greater than levels in MO-fed fish. The fatty acid compositions of individual phospholipids from liver showed marked differences between dietary treatments. Fish fed MO had significantly higher levels of the (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), 20:5(n-3), 22:5(n-3) and 22:6(n-3), and also significantly more 20:4(n-6) compared to BO-fed fish which had significantly higher 18:2(n-6), 18:3(n-6), 20:2(n-6) and 20:3(n-6). The composition of liver phosphatidylinositol was particularly unusual in BO-fed fish having DHGLA as the major C20 PUFA which was 2.2-fold greater than AA and 3.9-fold greater than EPA. This study demonstrates that the carcass composition of turbot can be altered, by means of dietary lipids, to contain increased levels of EPA and DHGLA which would be of potential benefit in human as well as in fish nutrition. However, caution should be exercised when using very highly unsaturated oils relatively rich in EPA which may generate histopathological lesions in the fish.Abbreviations AA arachidonic acid - ANOVA analysis of variance - BHT butylated hydroxytoluene - BO borage oil - DHA docosahexaenoic acid - DHGLA dihomo--linolenic acid - EPA eicosapentaenoic acid - GLA -linolenic acid - HPTLC high performance thin-layer chromatography - MO Marinol K - PC phosphatidylcholine - PE phosphatidylethanolamine - PI phosphatidylinositol - PS phosphatidylserine - PUFA polyunsaturated fatty acid - TLC thin-layer chromatography  相似文献
