Evaluation of computer-aided learning illustrated by the multimedia program, "Hereditary diseases of the dog--joints,bones, musculature"

Results are presented on the evaluation of the interactive tutorial and information system "Hereditary diseases of the dog-joints, bones, musculature" which was developed at the Institute of Animal Breeding and Genetics and the Clinic for Small Animals at the School of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, aiming to improve the problem consciousness for the genetic background of most diseases of the musculoskeletal system of the dog. It addresses veterinarians, students of veterinary medicine and also dog breeders and owners. The programme offers extensive basic information about all known hereditary diseases of the joints, bones and muscles of the dog and gives also information on symptoms, diagnosis, therapy, distribution and genetics of the diseases. The user can apply it as a reference book, as a tutorial to complete or control his knowledge or to gain a fast overview of the up-to-date knowledge. The tutorial was evaluated by students in the second and third academic year, veterinary surgeons and dog breeders. Computer assisted learning was judged as very positive by all test persons. The programme received from all test persons an average score of 2.11 +/- 0.77 on a scale from 1 (very good) to 5 (unsatisfactory). The results show that computer-aided learning can be an effective and stimulating substitution to traditional learning and learning materials.

三江源区退化人工草地、“黑土滩”和天然草地植物群落物种多样性

为深入研究人工草地方法在治理青藏高原"黑土滩"的作用,从植物群落物种组成角度分析了三江源区退化的人工草地分别与"黑土滩"退化草地和未退化的天然草地之间的接近程度。结果表明:退化人工草地、"黑土滩"和天然草地中,平均物种数分别是29,32和35种。退化人工草地中禾本科重要值占群落总量的21%,"黑土滩"中杂类草重要值占群落总量的88.2%,天然草地中禾本科和莎草科的重要值占群落总量的37.4%。草地群落的Shannon-Wiener指数、Simpson优势集中性指数和Pielou均匀度指数都是天然草地"黑土滩"退化人工草地。Sorensen指数和Jaccard指数表明退化人工草地和"黑土滩"群落的相似性最大,"黑土滩"和天然草地的次之,退化人工和天然草地的相似性最小。退化人工草地中毒杂草比例较"黑土滩"中少10%左右。表明人工草地措施在一定程度上促进了"黑土滩"退化草地植物群落的恢复性演替。

Cleavage of zearalenone-glycoside, a "masked" mycotoxin, during digestion in swine

Comparative analyses of cereal samples pretreated with or without beta-glucosidase indicate the presence of zearalenone-glycoside. To examine the stability of zearalenone-glycoside during digestion, mixed feed was artificially contaminated with synthesized zearalenone-4-beta-D-glucopyranoside (395 micrograms/kg) and fed to a pig over a period of 14 days. The metabolites detected in feces and urine samples were zearalenone and alpha-zearalenol. These results demonstrate that zearalenone-4-beta-D-glucopyranoside is decomposed during digestion and the aglucone, zearalenone, is released. Since zearalenone-glycoside is not detected during routine analysis, but hydrolysed during digestion, it seems likely that such "masked mycotoxins" are involved in cases of mycotoxicoses.     

Agents of the "suis-ide diseases" of swine: Actinobacillus suis, Haemophilus parasuis, and Streptococcus suis.

In recent years, Actinobacillus suis, Haemophilus parasuis, and Streptococcus suis have emerged as important pathogens of swine, particularly in high health status herds. Their association with a wide range of serious clinical conditions and has given rise to the moniker "suis-ide diseases." These organisms are early colonizers and, for that reason, are difficult to control by management procedures such as segregated early weaning. Vaccination, serodiagnostic testing, and even serotyping are complicated by the presence of multiple serotypes, cross-reactive antigens, and the absence of clear markers for virulence. In this review, we discuss our current understanding of the pathogenesis, epidemiology, and management of the causative agents of the "suis-ide diseases" of swine.
