This experiment was carried out to study the effect of a directly fed exogenous fibrolytic enzyme on intake and digestion of DM, OM, protein, NDF, ADF, and hemicellulose of alfalfa and ryegrass hay by sheep. Four diets were randomly assigned to four ruminally cannulated lambs using a 4 x 4 Latin square design, repeated in time, with a factorial arrangement (2 x 2) of diets: 1) alfalfa hay; 2) alfalfa hay + exogenous fibrolytic enzymes (enzyme); 3) ryegrass hay; and 4) ryegrass hay + enzyme. Lambs consumed more DM and OM from alfalfa than from ryegrass hay (P < 0.001). The ADF intake was not different between the hays, but NDF intake was lower for alfalfa (P < 0.001). For both hays, the enzyme increased intake of DM (P < 0.01), as well as OM and CP (P < 0.05); however, NDF and ADF intake were not changed. Alfalfa hay had higher apparent digestibility of DM, OM, and CP (P < 0.001), but lower digestibility for NDF, ADF, and hemicellulose. The enzyme increased apparent digestibility of CP, hemicellulose (P < 0.05), and NDF (P < 0.10) for alfalfa. Also, for both hays, the enzyme improved N balance because lambs retained more N (P < 0.05). The enzyme increased (P < 0.05) total VFA concentration (3 and 6 h) for both hays. Results from this trial indicate that directly fed exogenous fibrolytic enzymes may change ruminal fermentation, intake, and digestibility of forages with different nutritive value.  相似文献

Thirty-two wethers were used to compare the nutritive value of Climax timothy (Phleum pratense L.) and quackgrass (Agropyron repens L. Beauv.) harvested at two stages of maturity, joint and early heading, and fed as hay. Crude protein was higher for quackgrass than for timothy (P less than .01). As maturity advanced, CP decreased (P less than .01), but NDF and ADL increased (P less than .01). Dry matter intake was similar between species but decreased by 8% with increasing maturity (P less than .01). Intake of NDF (g/kg.75) was similar for all hays. With increasing plant maturity, apparent digestibility decreased, the effect being more pronounced for quackgrass. Apparent digestibilities of DM and energy were slightly higher (P less than .06) for timothy, and those of CP and hemicellulose were higher for quackgrass (P less than .01). Apparent digestibilities of NDF, ADF, ADL, crude fiber and cellulose were similar between species. Dry matter intake and digestibility were correlated negatively with the ADL/ADF ratio of the hay (r = -.99, P less than .01), whereas CP intake and CP digestibility were correlated with CP of the hay (r = .99, P less than .01). The Lucas test estimated true protein digestibility at 88.1% and metabolic fecal protein at 29.4 g per kg of DM intake. During the growth trial, DM intake was similar between hays, but ADG of sheep was lower (P less than .01) for those fed hays at early heading vs those receiving hays at the joint stage of maturity. The feed to gain ratio was slightly lower for hays at joint (P less than .08). Under the climatic conditions of the 1988 growing season, the nutritive value of quackgrass was similar to that of Climax timothy.  相似文献

The quality of different classes of forage hay (C3, C4 grasses and legumes) was determined in intake and digestibility trials with mature cattle, sheep and goats. For all nine hays, DM and NDF digestibility by cattle and goats was higher (P less than .05) than by sheep, with no differences due to forage class. Cattle had a higher (P less than .01) DM intake than sheep or goats averaged across forage (92.6 vs 65.8 and 68.6 g/kg BW.75); hay intake was highest on legume, with no difference between C3 and C4 grasses. Mean NDF intake by cattle was greater than by sheep or goats (58.7 vs 39.6 and 42.6 g/kg BW.75); NDF intake for all animal species decreased in the order C4 grass greater than C3 grass greater than legume. Particle passage rates did not differ (P greater than .05) with forage class but were higher (P less than .02) for sheep and goats than for cattle. Prefeeding ruminal DM fill values, determined by emptying, were 10.6, 15.0 and 19.9 g/kg BW1.0 for alfalfa, orchardgrass and switchgrass hays fed to cattle, and 11.2, 11.3 and 16.5 g/kg BW1.0 for the same hays fed to sheep. Estimated turnover times for DM and NDF were shorter (P less than .05) for sheep than for cattle; DM turnover was longer for switchgrass than for alfalfa and orchardgrass, with no forage differences in NDF turnover between these two animal species. The effect of ruminal degradable protein source in roughage diets on nutrient digestibility and animal growth was evaluated in two trials using lambs. In trial 1, two qualities of alfalfa and smooth brome hays replaced 0, 15, 30 or 100% of an ammonia (NH3)-treated corn cob negative control diet in a digestion trial using 26 mixed breed wethers (31.8 kg). Fifteen or 30% inclusion of hay increased (P less than .01) dry matter (DM) intake, regardless of hay type or quality. Cell wall intake was highest for 100% high quality brome hay. Positive associative action on digestibility of DM and cell walls occurred with 30% of each hay tested when diets were fed ad libitum. Measured at equal intakes, DM and cell wall digestibilities were affected by forage type X level and forage quality X level interactions (P less than .01), which showed that the magnitude of associative action was greater for 30% of high vs low quality and alfalfa vs brome hay, respectively. Magnitude of associative response on cell wall digestibility was more highly correlated to degradable N (r = .88) than cell solubles (r = .64) content of hay. In trial 2, 72 young growing lambs were allotted to three sources of supplemental ruminal degradable N (NH3, casein, corn steep liquor) superimposed upon two levels of alfalfa hay (0 or 30% of diet DM). Two experiments were conducted to determine the influence of dietary roughage concentration and feed intake on finishing steer performance and ruminal metabolism. In Exp. 1, 126 steers (334 kg) were used in a completely randomized design and fed (120 d) diets of steam-rolled wheat without roughage or containing 5, 10 or 15% roughage (50% alfalfa hay:50% corn silage). Steers fed 5 or 10% roughage gained faster (quadratic, P less than .05) and were more efficient (quadratic, P less than .05) than steers fed 15% or no roughage. In Exp. 2, six ruminally cannulated steers (447 kg) were used in a 6 x 6 latin square design and fed (twice daily) diets of steam-rolled wheat without roughage or containing 5 or 15% alfalfa hay at twice or three times NE required for maintenance. Increasing dietary roughage increased (linear, P less than .01) ruminal liquid passage 38%, indigestible ADF passage 63%, Yb-labeled wheat passage 75% and fiber fill 31%. The rate of in situ starch digestion tended to increase (linear, P = .16), and ruminal VFA concentration was 40 mM higher (P less than .01) at 4 h after feeding with increased roughage. Increased feed intake increased (P less than .05) ruminal starch fill, fiber fill, liquid fill and liquid passage 23%, Yb-labeled wheat passage 50% and Dry-labeled hay passage 20%. It reduced protozoa five- to sixfold (P less than .01) but doubled total bacterial counts (P less than .01). Ruminal NH3N was lower (P less than .01) and total VFA concentration was 50 mM higher (P less than .01) at 4 h after feeding. The acetate:propionate ratio was reduced from 2.3 to 1.3 (P less than .01) with increased intake. Adding roughage to a steam-rolled wheat diet increased passage and tended to increase rate of starch digestion; increased feed intake with its associated effects on ruminal fill and passage dramatically shifted the microbial population and fermentation end products.  相似文献

Five crossbred beef cows (Hereford X Angus, 422 kg) with ruminal and duodenal cannulae were used in a Latin square experiment to determine the effects of dietary proportions of fescue and clover hays (0:1, .25: .75, .5:.5, .75:.25 and 1:0) on digestive function. Feed intake was 85% of ad libitum intake of fescue alone (1.03% of body weight). Fescue contained 1.26% nitrogen (N), 71.0% neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and 7.6% acid detergent lignin (ADL), and clover contained 2.43% N 50.0% NDF and 5.8% ADL in DM. Ruminal fluid ammonia-N concentration increased linearly (P less than .05) with declining dietary fescue level. Total concentration of volatile fatty acids in ruminal fluid and duodenal and rectal digesta mean particle size were not affected by fescue level. Ruminal fluid volume and flow rate increased linearly (P less than .05) with increasing dietary fescue, but fluid and particulate digesta passage rates were unchanged. Apparent ruminal organic matter (OM) digestion decreased quadratically (P less than .05) as fescue increased (74.5, 54.3, 49.8, 46.2 and 42.4% for 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% fescue, respectively). Postruminal OM digestion as a percentage of intake was partially compensatory, increasing linearly (P less than .05) as dietary fescue level rose (2.3, 3.5, 5.1, 8.6 and 11.1% of intake). Thus, total tract OM digestion declined less as fescue replaced clover (76.8, 57.8, 55.0, 54.8 and 53.5%; linear and quadratic, P less than .05) than did apparent ruminal OM disappearance. Changes in ruminal NDF, acid detergent fibre and cellulose digestibilities were similar to those for OM. Microbial growth efficiency increased quadratically (P less than .10) as fescue intake increased. These results indicate that with low feed intake, ruminal and total tract digestion of an all-legume hay diet is greater than that of a grass hay diet. Little or no digestive advantage was achieved by substituting clover for fescue, except in the case of total replacement of fescue with clover, because of concurrent decreases in microbial growth efficiency, microbial N flow to the intestines and OM digestion in the postruminal tract. Negative associative effects in digestion observed between clover and fescue hays in this experiment deserve further study.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted to determine some of the factors that led to hypomagnesemic tetany associated with the feeding of two orchardgrass hays. Sixteen mature Columbia and Suffolk wethers (62 to 72 kg), four of which were fitted with ruminal and abomasal cannulae, were fed one of two tetany-prone orchardgrass hays or a non-tetany-prone bromegrass hay. In Exp. 1, 12 wethers were used in a completely random design metabolism experiment to measure apparent absorption and retention of macrominerals. In Exp. 2, four wethers with ruminal and abomasal cannulae were used in a completely random design experiment to monitor pre-intestinal mineral absorption and ruminal characteristics. This experiment was replicated once, with wethers remaining on their diets for 16 d in each replication. In the metabolism experiment, apparent absorption and retention of Mg as a percentage of intake were lower (P less than .01 and P less than .05) for one tetany-prone orchardgrass hay compared with the other orchardgrass hay. Pre-intestinal absorption of Mg in the cannulated wethers was greater (P less than .01) for the orchardgrass hays than for the bromegrass hay. Pre-intestinal Mg absorption was higher (P less than .01), both in terms of grams per day and a percentage of intake for the orchardgrass hay with the highest Mg content. In the noncannulated wethers, the percentage of water-soluble Mg in the feces was lower (P less than .01) for the tetany-prone hays, indicating that a decrease in Mg solubility in the intestine may have influenced Mg apparent absorption.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Six Hereford steers averaging 256 kg were used in a 2 x 3 factorial arrangement within a 6 x 6 Latin square design to study the effect of forage conservation (silage vs hay) and N supplementation (0, 200 g of fish meal plus 43 g of urea, or 400 g of fish meal) on ruminal characteristics, digestibility, blood urea, and in situ degradability of DM, N, and ADF. Dry matter intake of forage and total DMI did not differ among treatments (P greater than .05) and averaged 5.3 and 5.5 kg, respectively. Steers fed silage had greater (P less than .05) pH and concentrations of ammonia N, isobutyrate, isovalerate, and valerate in the rumen than in the rumen of those fed hay. Nitrogen supplementation increased (P less than .05) concentrations of total VFA and valerate in the rumen. Digestibility of N and ADF was greater (P less than .05) for silage than for hay, and N supplementation increased digestibility of N. Plasma urea concentrations were greater (P less than .05) for steers fed silage than for those fed hay. These data suggest that feed utilization is better with silage than with hay and is increased by N supplementation.  相似文献

To evaluate the protein quality and postgut N utilization of full-bloom timothy hay, oat-supplemented timothy-hay diets, and alfalfa hay harvested at different maturities, apparent whole tract N digestibility, urinary N excretion, and serum AA profiles were determined in light to moderately exercised Arabian horses. Six Arabian geldings (16.0 ± 0.3 yr; 467 ± 11 kg of BW) were randomly allocated to a 6 × 6 Latin square design. Diets included full-bloom timothy grass hay (G), G + 0.2% BW oat (G1), G + 0.4% BW oat (G2), mid-bloom alfalfa (A1), early-bloom alfalfa (A2), and early-bud alfalfa hay (A3). Forages were fed at 1.6% of the BW of the horse (as-fed). Each period consisted of an 11-d adaptation period followed by total collection of feces and urine for 3 d. Blood samples were taken on d 11 for analysis of serum AA concentrations. During the 3-d collection period, urine and feces were collected every 8 h and measured and weighed, respectively. Approximately 10% of the total urine volume and fecal weight per period was retained for N analyses. Fecal DM output was less (P < 0.05) in A1, A2, or A3 compared with G, G1, or G2. Apparent whole tract N digestibility was greater (P < 0.01) in A1, A2, and A3 compared with G, G1, or G2, and was greater (P < 0.05) in G1 and G2 compared with G. Nitrogen retention was not different from zero, and there were no differences (P > 0.05) in N retention among diets. Urinary N excretion and total N excretion were greater (P < 0.05) in A1, A2, and A3 compared with G, G1, or G2. Plasma concentrations for the majority of AA increased curvilinearly in response to feeding G, A1, A2, and A3 (quadratic, P < 0.05), with values appearing to maximize 2-h postfeeding. Although alfalfa N digestibility increased with decreasing harvest maturity, N retention did not differ and urinary volume and N excretion increased, indicating that postabsorptive N utilization decreased. In contrast, inclusion of oats at either 0.2 or 0.4% of the BW of the horse to timothy hay markedly enhanced N digestibility without increasing N excretion, indicating improvement in postgut N utilization. These findings indicate that feeding oat-supplemented timothy hay is more environmentally sustainable than feeding alfalfa to the horse at maintenance or under light to moderate exercise.  相似文献

Five crossbred wethers (58 kg) fitted with cannulas in the rumen, duodenum, and ileum were used in a 5 x 5 Latin square design to study effects of feeding combinations of alkaline hydrogen peroxide-treated wheat straw (AHP-WS) and alfalfa hay at restricted intakes on site and extent of nutrient digestion. Additionally, flows and disappearance of N and amino acids (AA) in the small intestine were regressed on alfalfa nitrogen intake (ANI) to estimate alfalfa's contribution to postruminal N and AA supplies. Diets consisted of 80:20 forage:concentrate mixtures; diet designations were 80:0, 80% AHP-WS and no alfalfa; 60:20, 60% AHP-WS and 20% alfalfa; 40:40, 40% AHP-WS and 40% alfalfa; 20:60, 20% AHP-WS and 60% alfalfa; and 0:80, no AHP-WS and 80% alfalfa. A modest positive quadratic (P less than .05) response was noted for total tract digestibility (TTD) of OM; values were 76.5% for diets 80:0 and 0:80 vs 78% for diet 40:40. Ruminal digestibility (percentage of intake) of NDF and ADF increased in a quadratic manner from 43 and 30%, respectively, for diet 0:80 to 71 and 70%, respectively, for diet 80:0. Ruminal digestibility of fiber may have been enhanced due to linear (P less than .05) decreases in liquid and particulate dilution rates, resulting in increased ruminal residence time of fiber as alfalfa hay replaced AHP-WS. Liquid and particulate dilution rates decreased linearly from 6.4 and 5.2%/h, respectively, for diet 80:0 to 5.4 and 3.4%/h, respectively, for diet 0:80. Regression analysis of N data indicated that alfalfa N had a ruminal escape value of 26%.  相似文献

The effects of source and level of dietary NDF on intake, ruminal digestion in situ, ruminal fermentation, and total tract digestion were evaluated in Hereford steers using a replicated 5 x 5 Latin square design. Diets contained 62 to 64% TDN and included 1) 80% control concentrate (contained pelleted ground grains) and 20% timothy hay (traditional diet), 2) 80% control concentrate and 20% alfalfa cubes, 3) 90% control concentrate and 10% cubes, 4) a completely pelleted diet using corn cobs as the primary NDF source, and 5) 80% textured (rolled instead of ground grains) concentrate and 20% hay. Dry matter intake differed (P less than .05) between the traditional and cube diets due to limited acceptance of alfalfa cubes. Increased (P less than .05) ruminal osmolality, total VFA, and NH3 N and lower (P less than .01) ruminal pH in steers fed corn cob and cube diets relative to steers fed the traditional diet were due to preferential consumption of concentrate over supplemental roughage and the resultant rapid fermentation of concentrates. Potentially degradable DM in the traditional diet exceeded (P less than .06) all other diets, resulting in the increased (P less than .10) extent of DM disappearance despite a slower (P less than .05) rate of DM disappearance. Rate of NDF disappearance and all in situ starch disappearance parameters were similar between the traditional, corn cob, and cube diets. All ruminal digestion parameters involving NDF disappearance were similar between hay diets and between cube diets, whereas rate and extent of starch disappearance differed (P less than .05) between hay diets. Although formulation of diets with different sources of dietary NDF did not affect total tract digestion of nutrients, nutrient availability and ruminal fermentation were altered due to dietary differences in sources of dietary NDF and preferential selection of feedstuffs by steers.  相似文献

Three digestion experiments and one growth experiment were conducted to determine site, extent and ruminal rate of forage digestion and rate and efficiency of gain by cattle offered alfalfa haylage supplemented with corn or dry corn gluten feed (CGF). In Exp. 1, eight steers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with substitution of corn for 0, 20, 40 or 60% of haylage in a 4 X 4 latin square. Increasing dietary corn substitution increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by steers but decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. In Exp. 2, five heifers were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets with increasing dietary levels of CGF in a 5 X 5 latin square. Increasing dietary CGF increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion by heifers. In Exp. 3 and 4, cattle were fed alfalfa haylage-based diets containing either 20 or 60% corn or CGF. In Exp. 3, supplementation increased (P less than .05) OM and NDF digestion but level X supplement source interaction (P less than .05) occurred, with added CGF increasing OM and NDF digestion more than added corn. In Exp. 4, supplementation improved (P less than .05) DM intake, daily gain and feed efficiency. Dry matter intake and daily gain were greater (P less than .05) for 60% supplementation than for 20% supplementation. Overall, whereas increasing the level of dietary supplement increased (P less than .05) OM, NDF and ADF digestion, only corn addition decreased (P less than .05) rate of in situ alfalfa DM digestion. Daily gains and feed efficiencies were similar in cattle fed either corn or CGF with alfalfa haylage.  相似文献

Ruminal ammonia-N decreased and four- and five-carbon fatty acid concentrations increased linearly (P less than .05) with increasing F. Mean particle size of duodenal digesta was not affected by F level, but specific gravity of duodenal particles changed quadratically (P less than .05) as F rose, being greatest with 25 and 50% F. Ruminal fluid volume was constant, but dilution rate increased linearly (P less than .05) as F increased. Passage rate of B was faster than that of F in mixed diets. Organic matter (OM) flow and digestibilities, true ruminal N disappearance and microbial efficiency were not affected (P greater than .10) by F. True ruminal N disappearance and microbial efficiency were not affected (P greater than .10) by F. True ruminal N disappearance ranged from 73 to 78%, and microbial growth efficiency was between 18 and 22 g microbial N/kg OM fermented. Ruminal digestibilities of NDF, acid detergent fibre (ADF), cellulose and hemicellulose decreased linearly (P less than .05) as F increased, being 68.2, 64.9, 65.6, 61.2 and 61.6% for NDF, 58.9, 54.7, 56.2, 53.3 and 53.2% for ADF, 64.7, 61.3, 62.1, 59.0 and 59.1% for cellulose, and 76.1, 74.4, 75.4, 70.1 and 72.2% for hemicellulose for 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% F, respectively. Digestive function in beef cows fed mixed F-B diets at a low level of intake related directly to dietary forage proportions and digestive characteristics when forages were fed alone.  相似文献

Teff (Eragrostis tef) is a productive warm season annual grass. Because teff is relatively new to the horse industry in the United States, horses unaccustomed to teff hay were used in two sets of two-choice preference tests comparing teff with alfalfa hay or teff with timothy hay. A second experiment used mature mares to compare voluntary dry matter intake (VDMI) of teff hay and timothy hay. In the two-choice preference tests, horses preferred alfalfa hay and timothy hay to teff hay (P < .05). Horses preferred teff hay that was cut at an earlier stage of maturity and had lower concentrations of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber than teff hay cut at a later stage of maturity. In the VDMI experiment, four mares were fed teff hay and four mares were fed timothy hay for 17 days. Both hays had been harvested in the head stage of maturity. VDMI was measured during the last 10 days and was not different between the two groups of horses (P > .05). It was concluded that horses that are unfamiliar with teff may discriminate against it when it is offered simultaneously with alfalfa or timothy; however, if not given a choice, horses will consume approximately the same amount of mature teff as mature timothy. Additional studies are needed to compare VDMI of early maturity teff hay with other common hays.  相似文献

Apparent digestibility and nutrient utilization were studied in a digestion and balance trial with 30 wether lambs (BW 32 kg). Lambs were blocked by weight and allotted randomly to five diets with ratios of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) to 'Lathco' flatpea (Lathyrus sylvestris L.) hay of 100:0, 75:25, 50:50, 25:75, and 0:100. Alfalfa was harvested in the early bloom stage and flatpea was harvested in the vegetative stage. Digestibilities of DM, NDF, ADF, cellulose, hemicellulose, and energy decreased linearly (P less than .05) as the level of flatpea hay increased to values of 53.3, 32.4, 39.9, 46.0, 40.5, and 52.5%, respectively, for 100% flatpea hay. Nitrogen retention (9 to 15% of intake) was not affected by level of flatpea hay. Ruminal pH, NH3 N, and blood urea N increased linearly (P less than .001) as level of flatpea increased in the diet, apparently a reflection of dietary N level. Calcium excretion decreased linearly (P less than .01) with increased proportions of flatpea hay and was related to dietary intake of Ca. Apparent absorption and retention showed a cubic effect (P less than .05). No clinical signs of toxicity were observed in any of the lambs during the 20-d metabolism trial. Vegetative flatpea is potentially valuable as a forage for feeding ruminants.  相似文献

A 5 X 5 Latin square design involving five cannulated beef steers (342 and 358 kg avg initial and final body weights, respectively) fed prairie hay (76.7% neutral detergent fiber, 5.7% acid detergent lignin and .85% N) was conducted to evaluate effects on feed intake and nutrient digestion of variations in physical characteristics of ruminal digesta achieved by ruminal insertion of different amounts of prairie hay differing in particle size. Steers were fed hay ad libitum in two equal meals (0800 and 2000). At 1200, four of the steers received manual, ruminal insertions of ground hay. Fine hay (F) was ground through a screen with 2-mm openings (.39 mm mean particle size), whereas coarse hay (C) was ground through a screen with 2.54-cm openings (4.46 mm mean particle size). Amounts of hay inserted were .2 (low, L) or .4% (high, H of initial body weight of individual steers. Ruminal hay insertions comprised 18% of total dry matter (DM) intake for L and 34 and 37% for HF and HC, respectively. Fed hay consumption decreased (P less than .05) with hay insertion and was lower for H than L; total DM intake was not influenced by treatment (P greater than .10). Two metabolism trials were conducted with 12 yearling crossbred wethers per trial (34 and 38 kg for trials 1 and 2, respectively). The wethers, equipped with ruminal, abomasal and ileal cannulae, were randomly allotted for each trial to the following treatments: 1) hay alone or hay supplemented with 2) .9% urea, 3) 1% urea and 6.5% molasses or 4) 1% urea and 5.2% corn. Two digestive flow markers were used: Cr2O3 powder and Co-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (Co-EDTA). Urea and Co-EDTA were infused continuously into the rumen via cannula. Daily dry matter (DM) intake averaged 517 g. Urea supplementation improved N retention (P less than .01). Apparent digestibility of DM, acid detergent fiber (ADF) and energy was not affected by treatment. Urea and carbohydrate supplementation increased ruminal propionic acid molar proportions (P less than .05). Apparent ruminal DM digestion accounted for 41% of the total DM degraded, whereas 77.4% of the digestible ADF was degraded in the rumen. Urea supplementation increased ADF digestion in the large intestine (P less than .01). Urea and carbohydrate supplementation resulted in a stepwise increase in N flowing with the liquid phase at the abomasum. Mean retention times of the solid and liquid phases of digestive contents were similar across treatments. Overall, benefits of supplementation of poor-quality fescue hay diets by small amounts of urea and readily available carbohydrates remain questionable for sheep fed at a fixed level of intake below maintenance.  相似文献

Southern crabgrass (Digitaria ciliaris [Retz.] Koel.) is often an undesirable species in field and forage crops, but visual observations suggest that livestock prefer it to many other summer forages. The objectives of this study were to assess the nutritive value of crabgrass sampled weekly between July 11 and August 22, 2001 and then to determine ruminal in situ disappearance kinetics of N and neutral detergent insoluble N (NDIN) for these forages. A secondary objective was to compare these kinetic estimates for crabgrass with those of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.), bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon [L.] Pers.), and or-chardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) as control hays. All kinetic evaluations were conducted with 5 ruminally cannulated Gelbvieh x Angus x Brangus steers (383 +/- 22.7 kg). Concentrations of N for crabgrass decreased linearly (P < or = 0.002) across sampling dates for leaf, stem, and whole-plant tissues. Conversely, percentages of the total N pool within NDIN and ADIN fractions generally increased over sampling dates in mostly linear patterns. For crabgrass, the immediately soluble portion of the total N pool (fraction A; overall mean = 54.6% of N) was greater (P < 0.001) than for all control hays. Crabgrass exhibited a more rapid N disappearance rate (overall mean = 0.093/h; expressed as a proportion disappearing/h) than that of bermudagrass (0.046/h; P < 0.001), but the disappearance rate for alfalfa N (0.223/h) was considerably faster (P < 0.001) than for crabgrass. The effective ruminal disappearance of N was greater (P < 0.001) for crabgrass (overall mean = 85.4%) than for the alfalfa (83.3%), bermudagrass (72.3%), or orchardgrass (76.0%) control hays. For alfalfa, the ruminal disappearance rate of NDIN (0.150/h) was more rapid (P < 0.001) than for crabgrass (overall mean = 0.110/h); however, the disappearance rate for crabgrass was faster than that for bermudagrass (0.072/h; P < 0.001) or for orchardgrass (0.098/h; P = 0.010). Effective ruminal disappearance of NDIN was greater (P < 0.001) for crabgrass (overall mean = 72.0%) than for the bermudagrass (69.0%) or alfalfa hays (50.5%), but there was no difference (P = 0.865) between crabgrass and orchardgrass (72.1%). Although crabgrass forages exhibited concentrations of total N that were comparable with those of alfalfa and rates of ruminal N disappearance that were < 50% of those for the alfalfa hay control, improvements in N use efficiency relative to alfalfa are questionable because of the excessively large Fraction A for crabgrass.  相似文献

Four adult wethers (45 kg) with permanent ruminal and abomasal cannulae were used in a repeated measures Latin-square arrangement of treatments to quantitate the effects of diet concentrate level and sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) on site and extent of forage fiber digestion in the gastrointestinal tract. Experimental diets consisted of Kentucky-31 tall fescue hay, soybean meal and a semi-purified concentrate mixture in ratios of 95:5:0, 76:4:20, 57:3:40 and 38:2:60; NaHCO3 represented 0 or 7.5% of the concentrate mixture. Ruminal digestion (% of intake) of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and hemicellulose decreased linearly (P less than .05), whereas acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestion responded in a cubic (P less than .05) fashion to increasing concentrate level; NaHCO3 improved ruminal digestion of NDF (P less than .10) and ADF (P less than .05), but not hemicellulose. Post-ruminal digestion (% of rumen non-degraded) of NDF and ADF tended to increase, whereas hemicellulose digestion responded in a cubic (P less than .05) fashion to increasing concentrate level; NaHCO3 decreased (P less than .05) post-ruminal digestion of all fiber fractions. Total tract digestion of NDF and ADF showed a cubic (P less than .05) response, whereas hemicellulose digestion responded in a quadratic (P less than .05) fashion to increasing concentrate level; NaHCO3 had no effect on total tract digestion of any fiber fraction. Twenty-four third- and fourth-parity crossbred gravid sows were housed in metabolism stalls and randomly allotted to four dietary treatments: corn-alfalfa:orchardgrass hay (46%; CH), CH plus lasalocid (CHL), corn-soybean meal (CS) or CS plus lasalocid (CSL). Daily feed intake was 2.36 kg for CH- and CHL-fed sows and 1.66 kg for CS- and CSL-fed sows. Lasalocid intake was 110 mg X sow-1 X d-1. Total feces and urine were collected during two 5-d collection periods, 40 and 80 d postcoitum. Digestible energy (DE), metabolizable energy (ME), nitrogen (N) retention, dry matter (DM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibilities, and retention of calcium (Ca), total phosphorus (P), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) were determined. Percentage DE and ME were greater (P less than .0001) for CS- and CSL-fed sows (88.3 and 83.4%) than for CH- and CHL-fed sows (65.2 and 61.3%). Lasalocid did not influence (P greater than .05) DE and ME values but decreased (P less than .01) the ME:DE ratio. Percentage N digestibility was greater (P less than .0001) for CS- and CSL-fed sows (85.7%) than for CH- and CHL-fed sows (60.8%), but there was no significant difference in N retention, expressed as a percentage of N intake. Lasalocid increased (P less than .03) percentage N digestibility; however, the diet X additive interaction decreased (P less than .005) grams N retained X sow-1 X d-1 for CSL-fed sows. The CH- and CHL-fed sows digested more grams of DM, NDF and ADF but had lower percentage digestibilities of DM and fiber fractions than did CS- and CSL-fed sows. The diet X additive interaction decreased (P less than .05) percentages of Ca, P and K digested and decreased (P less than .05) grams mineral retained (Ca, P, Mg and K) and mineral retained expressed as a percentage of intake for CSL-fed sows. Results indicate that alfalfa:orchardgrass hay and lasalocid influenced energy, fiber, nitrogen and mineral utilization by gravid sows.  相似文献
