Abstract:   The horizontal and vertical movements of eight immature hatchery-reared Mekong giant catfish Pangasianodon gigas were monitored using acoustic telemetry in Mae Peum Reservoir, Thailand between 2003 and 2004. The fish were monitored for between eight days and more than 9 months. All of the fish moved over the entire reservoir within approximately 40 days after release. Subsequently, the home range became small approximately 40 days after release. The fish preferred deep areas in the reservoir. The fish displayed diel horizontal and vertical movement patterns. The fish showed larger-scale horizontal movement during the daytime than at night. The fish repeatedly showed active vertical movement during the day, whilst there was little variation in swimming depth at night. Our results imply that the vertical movements of the fish were related to the environmental condition of the reservoir.  相似文献

In this study, the effect of shelter acclimation on the post-release movement and putative predation mortality of hatchery-reared black-spot tuskfish Choerodon schoenleinii was examined using acoustic telemetry. We acclimated four 1-year-old fish to shelters in cages before release and compared their movements with six nonacclimated fish. Since it was not possible to compare the behavioral pattern between the former and the latter fish due to the short periods the latter fish were available to be monitored, we also compared their movements with those of large nonacclimated fish that were less likely to be preyed upon. Sixty-seven percent of the nonacclimated fish showed atypical movements before the signals ceased to be detected, a pattern that suggested a predation event had occurred, whereas none of the acclimated and large nonacclimated fish showed the atypical movements. In addition, the probability of detection cessation was about 13 times lower in the acclimated than nonacclimated fish. The signal detection patterns suggest that the acclimated fish utilized night-time shelters from the first night after release, while the large nonacclimated fish started to utilize shelters several days after release. Therefore, it is likely that the shelter acclimation enhanced the shelter utilization by tuskfish, possibly decreasing post-release predation mortality.  相似文献

Landlocked Atlantic salmon (ouananiche, Salmo salar) spawning migration timing varies throughout its range and is influenced by a variety of environmental variables. This study examined the spawning migration time of landlocked Atlantic salmon in a small (4 ha) constructed stream linked to a large reservoir (32,600 ha) in Newfoundland, Canada. Salmon use of the stream was passively monitored using Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) Tags from 2006 to 2012. Of the salmon tagged throughout the reservoir, 48% entered the stream during the spawning season and remained there for 18–36 days from late September to November before they returned to the reservoir. Most fish entered the stream at dusk (32%). The lunar cycle influenced the timing of migration each year. Mean stream discharge (cubic metres per second) influenced migration timing in some years, and water temperature appeared to have minimal impact on migration timing. Twenty per cent of fish migrated to the stream in multiple years and 51% of these individuals appeared to use the stream on a biennial or alternate year cycle. These results demonstrate that small constructed streams can attract salmon from throughout a large reservoir and can provide valuable habitat in areas where spawning habitat is limited.  相似文献

To learn more about the movement patterns of bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus), we deployed archival tags on 87 fish ranging in fork length from 50 to 154 cm. Thirteen fish were recaptured, from which 11 archival tags were returned, representing in aggregate 943 days‐at‐liberty. We successfully retrieved data from 10 tags, representing 474 days in aggregate. The largest fish recaptured was 44.5 kg [131 cm fork length (FL)] and the smallest 2.8 kg (52 cm). The deepest descent recorded was 817 m, the coldest temperature visited 4.7°C, and minimum oxygen level reached ~1 mL L?1. Fish spent little time at depths where water temperatures were below 7°C and oxygen levels less than ~2 mL L?1. Five fish were recaptured near the offshore weather buoy where they were tagged. Based on vertical movement patterns, it appeared that all stayed immediately associated with the buoy for up to 34 days. During this time they remained primarily in the uniform temperature surface layer (i.e. above 100 m). In contrast, fish not associated with a floating object showed the W‐shaped vertical movement patterns during the day characteristic of bigeye tuna (i.e. descending to ~300–500 m and then returning regularly to the surface layer). Four fish were tagged and subsequently recaptured near Cross Seamount up to 76 days later. These fish exhibited vertical movement patterns similar to, but less regular than, those of fish not associated with any structure. Bigeye tuna appear to follow the diel vertical movements of the deep sound scattering layer (SSL) organisms and thus to exploit them effectively as a prey resource. Average night‐time depth was correlated with lunar illumination, a behaviour which mimics movements of the SSL.  相似文献

The sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria) is a long‐lived species with wide distribution throughout the North Pacific Ocean. While adult sablefish are considered a deep‐water fish, diet analyses suggest that they undergo vertical migrations that could be related to prey movement and feeding. Pop‐up satellite archival tags (PSATs) were used to observe the fine‐scale depth selection behavior of adult sablefish tagged off the Washington coast during the summer from June to August. Tags were physically retrieved after they surfaced using direction‐finding equipment so that complete datasets over the entire deployment were obtained from 14 tags. PSATs that recorded depth and temperature every 4 min during the deployment confirm that sablefish inhabit depths of 750 m or greater. However, a majority of the tagged fish underwent extensive vertical migrations that averaged 254.4 m overall and occurred at a 24 hr periodicity. Variations were observed among individuals in the amount of the deployment during which vertical migrations occurred, ranging from 12.37% to 63.48% of the time. During the vertical migration, fish ascended towards the surface at night and descended prior to daylight (i.e., diel vertical migration). Sablefish generally inhabited temperatures of 5°C but during the vertical migrations were found at temperatures from 6 to 10°C. Sablefish are opportunistic feeders with a large proportion of their diet being fish, euphausiids and cephalopods. Because these prey items also exhibit diel vertical migrations, it is possible that the vertical migratory behavior displayed by the sablefish was in response to the movements or the location of their prey.  相似文献

Biwa salmon Oncorhynchus masou subsp. were tagged with ultrasonic transmitters and released in Lake Biwa, Japan. The temporal and spatial distributions were investigated by using two types of ultrasonic telemetry system, active tracking and passive monitoring. Biwa salmon cruised throughout the north basin horizontally and were distributed from the surface to the bottom vertically in the lake. An individual monitored for over 1 year showed the diurnal patterns of vertical distribution and the seasonal patterns of horizontal distribution. The vertical distribution of the fish during daytime in the stratified period was bimodal, suggesting a feeding strategy targeting both fish near the thermocline and the amphipods near the bottom. During the night, however, the fish maintained a fixed depth range. The fish were distributed over a wider horizontal area in the mixed period than in the stratified period. Three individuals swam in shallower water and experienced higher water temperatures during the spawning season than before moving between offshore and coastal areas.  相似文献

The vertical distributions of two herbivorous cichlid fishes, Tropheus moorii and Tropheus duboisi, were studied on the rocky slope at Luhanga and Bemba, 12 km apart, in Lake Tanganyika, Zaire, Africa. At Luhanga, where T duboisi were not present, T. moorii ranged from the shoreline to a site 30 m deep. At Bemba, T moorii occupied areas less than 18 m and T duboisi areas between 5 and 30 m. In the overlapping zone, 5–18 m depth, each fish held an intra- and interspecific feeding territory, involving size-dependent dominance relationship between neighbors irrespective of species. We indicate that the vertical distributions of these species are restricted by competitive interactions.  相似文献

Archival tags were used to study the seasonal movements, migration patterns and vertical distribution of juvenile North Pacific albacore (Thunnus alalunga). Between 2001 and 2006, archival tags were deployed in North Pacific albacore in two regions of the Northeast Pacific: (i) off Northern Baja California, Mexico and Southern California, and (ii) off Washington and Oregon. Twenty archival tagged fish were recovered with times at liberty ranging from 63 to 697 days. Tagged albacore exhibited five distinct, seasonal migratory patterns. Depth and temperature data also showed a broad range of vertical behaviors. In certain regions such as off Baja California, Mexico, juvenile albacore make frequent dives to depths exceeding 200 m during the day and remain in the surface mixed layer at night, whereas off Oregon and Washington they remain near the surface both day and night. Water temperatures encountered ranged from 3.3 to 22.7°C. Peritoneal temperatures were significantly higher by an average of approximately 4°C, as expected in these warm‐bodied fish. This study provides a comprehensive examination of horizontal and vertical movements of juvenile albacore in the Northeast Pacific. The results reveal diverse behavior that varies regionally and seasonally as albacore move among different habitats throughout the entire North Pacific.  相似文献

Shelter is of major importance in many species of fish both in the wild and in aquaculture. Sheltering behaviour of Arctic charr has been poorly studied in aquaculture. A new type of shelter made of PVC agricultural drain cut in half was tested on culture performance and behaviour during the endogenous feeding period. This device offered grooves where alevins could position themselves and lie in a vertical position. A first experiment compared fish with and without shelter in incubator compartments. All fish were measured at 122, 158, and 190 days post fertilization (dpf) and observed at 126, 139 and 157 dpf. Fish provided with shelter showed better growth performances, lower mortality and started first exogenous feeding about six days later compared to fish without shelter. These effects from shelter provision were also associated with much less mobility in fish provided with shelter. At 126 dpf, all fish provided with shelter were immobile while other fish displayed horizontal stationary body movement (86%) or swam against the water current (7%). At 157 dpf, 85% of fish without shelter were immobile compared to 95% in fish provided with shelter. Both categories displayed stationary body movements. In most cases, there was one single fish per groove and a stable average value of 2.4 grooves was maintained between two successive fish throughout the study. The second experiment was a preference test where the fish were placed in similar compartments but occupied by a half shelter. We found that 61% of the fish were located under the shelter at 122 dpf while at 157 dpf, 58% were on the shelter and 42% out of the shelter. The present results revealed Arctic charr behavioural characteristics in the presence of a new type of artificial shelter at very early stages of development. This shelter enables the fish to stabilize in a vertical position without producing any movement and to choose by itself its favorite location throughout development. This device could be used to improve Arctic charr growth, performance and fish welfare during the endogenous feeding period.  相似文献

Several species of fish exhibit strong homing ability and distinct site fidelity to their original habitats and spawning sites. We have studied the homing ability, site fidelity, and diel movement patterns of three nocturnal black rockfish Sebastes inermis. The patterns were studied by radio-linked acoustic positioning system (VRAP) and fixed monitoring receivers (VR2) in Maizuru Bay, Japan from June to July 2004. All tagged fish were displaced by 80–120 m, but they returned to their respective captured sites at dusk, regardless of the time of release. The fish tagged with a depth sensor transmitter displayed active vertical movement just after the release, and subsequently swam near the bottom depth around the captured site. After homing, they displayed small home ranges [average 815 ± 265 m2 (SD)] around a single rocky area with one or two core areas (average 64 ± 30 m2). One core area was utilized during the daylight and dark periods, whereas the other was used primarily during the dark period. The depth-tagged fish primarily used the depth of the rock crevice during the daylight, and it spent its dark period between the surface and the deeper bottom depth.  相似文献

Vertical movements related to the thermoregulation were investigated in 12 juvenile bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus) in Japanese waters using archival tag data. Movements changed with time of day, season, and body size. During daytime, bigeye tuna descended to greater depths, presumably to feed in the deep scattering layer (DSL). Thereafter, they repeatedly ascended to shallower layers, suggesting attempts at behavioral thermoregulation, although the beginning of vertical thermoregulatory ascents might reflect a shift in DSL depth. By the end of such movement, the whole‐body heat‐transfer coefficient might decrease because, although the depth and ambient temperature of the upper layers did not change, the body temperature gradually decreased significantly just after ascent for thermoregulation. Seasonal patterns indicated that the vertical thermal structure of the ocean might influence this ascent behavior. For example, from January to May, bigeye tuna made fewer ascents to less shallow waters, suggesting that they respond to increasing depths of the mixed surface layer by reducing energy expenditure during vertical migration. In addition, as body size increased, fewer thermoregulatory ascents were required to maintain body temperature, and fish remained deeper for longer periods. Thus, vertical thermoregulatory movements might change with body size as bigeye tuna develop better endothermic and thermoregulatory abilities. We hypothesize that bigeye might also increase cold tolerance as they grow, possibly due to ontogenetic shifts in cardiac function.  相似文献

  • 1. The contamination of fish consignments (for stocking or aquaculture) is a major pathway by which non‐native organisms, including fish, are introduced to new areas. One of the best examples of this is the topmouth gudgeon Pseudorasbora parva, which was accidentally imported into Romania and then throughout Europe in consignments of Asian carp species.
  • 2. The introduction and spread of topmouth gudgeon in the UK has been linked to imports and movements of the ornamental variety (golden orfe) of ide Leuciscus idus. To examine this hypothesis, relationships between authorized movements of both native and non‐native fish species (in particular ide) and the occurrence in England of topmouth gudgeon were tested at the 10×10 km scale.
  • 3. Topmouth gudgeon occurrence in the wild was significantly correlated with the trajectories of movements of ornamental fish species (ide/orfe, sunbleak Leucaspius delineatus) as well as a few non‐ornamental fish species (European catfish Silurus glanis, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar and grass carp Ctenopharyngodon idella).
  • 4. These results highlight the mechanism by which non‐native fish species disperse from the point of first introduction, and especially that movements of fish within the country represent an important mechanism for accidental introductions of non‐native species. © Crown copyright 2010. Abstract –  We used radio-telemetry to investigate the movement patterns of river blackfish [ Gadopsis marmoratus (Richardson)] in Armstrong Creek, south-eastern Australia between August and October 2005. Movements of 11 fish were monitored 2–3 times per week during daylight over 48 days and diel movements of six fish monitored hourly for three consecutive days and nights. Most river blackfish displayed little or no movement during the day and were confined to distinct positions in the stream. However, fish moved over significantly larger ranges and moved amongst mesohabitats at night, which would not have been detected using daylight tracking data only. River blackfish most often were located within pools, but they also commonly used riffle and run habitats. We also found that several fish used inundated riparian areas during a flood and two fish made rapid, large movements coinciding with the elevated flows. This study has revealed previously undocumented aspects of the movements and behaviour of river blackfish. The study has also shown the potential for different conclusions regarding the extent of movement by a species depending on the temporal scale and the timing of observations.  相似文献

Abstract –  A segment of the Shibetsu River was restored to reconstruct the ecological condition of the previously canalized river stretch to a more natural, meandering state. In this study, we investigated the upstream migration of chum salmon ( Oncorhynchus keta ) using radio transmitters to track the horizontal position of fish and data loggers to detect the vertical swimming depth of fish, simultaneously. The monitored salmon travelled near the bottom of the water column and along the riverbanks, and tended to hold in deep, slow current areas in the canalized river. In the restored segment, the fish swam at more shallow depths and against stronger currents. Although the three tracked fish all reached the confluent point and chose to enter the restored segment, they did not remain in the segment for long. This indicates that the restored area facilitates the upward migration of the chum salmon.  相似文献

Hydroacoustic single fish detection and corresponding hydrographic measurements were used to study seasonal changes in vertical distribution of adult cod (Gadus morhua) in relation to ambient environmental conditions in the Bornholm Basin, central Baltic Sea. Sampling was conducted in April, June and August covering the years 2006–2009. Vertical distribution of individual fish was resolved from hydroacoustic single‐target detection in combination with a fish‐tracking algorithm and related to ambient hydrographic conditions. Based on a generalized linear effect model, both salinity and oxygen concentration were identified as key parameters affecting cod vertical distribution. Results also showed a clear seasonal effect with a more shallow distribution as the spawning season progressed and oxygen concentrations in the deep parts of the basin deteriorated. The upper limit of the distributional range was mostly constituted by the halocline and remained rather constant, whereas increasing oxygen depletion in the deep water layers lifted the lower boundary of the vertical distribution, leading to the observed upward shift in the overall distribution pattern. The results presented in this study highlight a significant shortcoming of the assessment survey design established for this species, as the observed shift in vertical distribution is not taken into account, thus introducing a potential bias into a data series used to tune the ICES standard stock assessment of this species.  相似文献

Using mark-recapture methods, the movements of the fluvial form of masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou masou) in a mountain stream on the island of Kyushu, Japan, were studied. Most (78%) of the masu salmon were recaptured in the pool in which they had been originally caught and tagged. Of those that moved between pools, the proportion of individuals that moved during the breeding period was not significantly higher than the proportion that moved during the non-breeding period. However, during the breeding period, a higher proportion of larger salmon moved than did smaller fish. The proportion of mobile large males during breeding period was higher than that for small males. Also, it was found that a few individuals showed long-range movement in the autumn. As a long-term movement, 78 individual fish (65%) that were recaptured more than three times showed high sedentary tendencies. Sixteen individual mobile fish (13%) moved and returned to the original pool. Fluvial form of masu salmon in Kyushu show a high sedentary nature; however, large mature males seem to actively move in search of female during breeding period.  相似文献

ABSTRACT:   Wild red tilefish Branchiostegus japonicus were tracked and/or monitored for up to nearly 3 months in Western Wakasa Bay and Maizuru Bay, Japan, using ultrasonic telemetry to examine their movements and burrow fidelity patterns. In Western Wakasa Bay, it is guessed that fish released in relatively shallow waters, about 30 m deep, actively moved into more suitable deeper habitats after their release. In Maizuru Bay, the fish did not undertake large-scale movements and showed burrow fidelity about 1 month after their release. That is, the fish primarily remained in the burrow, which was constructed in the sea-bottom, during the night and moved outside the burrow during the day. The marked circadian rhythm from Fourier analysis indicated a clear diel movement pattern of the red tilefish.  相似文献

  • 1. Marine protected areas (MPAs) range from multiple‐use areas (MUA) to absolute no‐take reserves (NTR). Despite their importance for fisheries management, there are few long‐term studies comparing benefits from different types of MPAs within the same region.
  • 2. Fish assemblages were monitored for five years (2001–2005) in the largest coral reefs in the South Atlantic (Abrolhos Bank, Brazil). Monitoring included one community‐based MUA, two NTRs (one established in 1983 and another in 2001), and one unprotected area. Benthic assemblages at these areas, as well as fish assemblages on unprotected deeper reefs (25–35 m), were monitored from 2003 onwards.
  • 3. Habitat characteristics strongly influenced fish assemblages' structure. This, together with the lack of data from before establishment of the MPAs, did not allow an unequivocal analysis of the effects of the MPAs.
  • 4. Biomass of commercially important fish, particularly small carnivores, was higher in the older NTR. Biomass of black grouper Mycteroperca bonaci increased by 30‐fold inside NTRs during the study period, while remaining consistently low elsewhere.
  • 5. A single herbivore species, the parrotfish Scarus trispinosus, dominated fish assemblages (28.3% of total biomass). Biomass of this species increased in 2002 on the younger NTR and on the MUA, soon after establishment of the former and banning of the parrotfish fishery in the latter. This increase was followed by a decline from 2003 onwards, after increased poaching and reopening of the parrotfish fishery.
  • 6. Fish biomass increased in 2002 across the entire region. This increase was stronger in sites closer to deeper reefs, where fish biomass was up to 30‐times higher than shallow reefs: movement of fish from deeper to shallower areas may have played a role.
  • 7. The effective use of MPAs in the Abrolhos Bank is still dependent on adequate enforcement and the protection of critical habitats such as deep reefs and mangroves.

Abstract –  The aim of this study was to test assumptions about the interaction of perch ( Perca fluviatilis L.) and roach ( Rutilus rutilus L.) concerning their food and habitat use in a deep and mesotrophic reservoir. From 1998 to 2001 the fish were caught with gillnets to perform diet analyses. Additionally, vertical gillnets were set to study vertical spatial distribution of both species. The results indicate that in a large and deep reservoir perch and roach are able to avoid competition by separating their niches first in the spatial dimension and then in the dimension of food utilisation. These separations result in low inter- and intraspecific competition of both species. We conclude that these niche separations can widen the juvenile competitive bottleneck to such an extent that the perch are not forced to compete with their older conspecifics during their first year of life, enabling perch to become large and consequently piscivorous.  相似文献
