Summary Colonization of living Norway spruce needles by Lophodermium piceae was studied in southern Sweden. One‐month to 3‐year‐old needles were assessed for frequency of infection. Needles appearing in the growing season of 1996 were monitored and sampled at 1 to 4 week intervals over a period of 14 months. Infection frequency of the current‐year needles increased from around 20% in July to approximately 40% in August 1996. This level had then doubled to approximately 80% after another growing season in August 1997. Multiple infections were rare in the needles during the first growing season, but after the second growing season at least 70% of the needles had multiple infections. The average number of infections in 9‐, 21‐ and 33‐month‐old needles were 1.3, 6.3 and 8.4, respectively. The size of the individual mycelia was estimated to be small in all needles, none of the individuals could be isolated from more than two adjacent needle sections, about 1.5 mm long. In conclusion, the number of L. piceae infections per needle increased during ageing of needles but mycelial growth is probably postponed until needle senescence and death. 相似文献

Norway spruce trees (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) pretreated by wounding and fungal infection showed highly enhanced resistance to a subsequent challenge inoculation with the pathogenic bluestain fungus Ceratocystis polonica (Siem.) C. Moreau. This is the first time the effectiveness of the constitutive and inducible defenses has been shown to depend on prior wounding and infection in conifers, although such acquired resistance has previously been found in several angiosperms. Trees that were pretreated with a combination of 12 bark wounds (1.6 x 10 cm), four fungal inoculations and four sterile inoculations 1-15 days before mass inoculation with C. polonica at 400 inoculations per square meter over a 0.8 m stem section had significantly shorter necroses in the phloem, less bluestained sapwood, and less dead cambium than untreated control trees. Pretreatment with four fungal or sterile inoculations alone did not lead to enhanced resistance. Pretreatment by bark wounding alone seemed to provide an intermediate degree of resistance compared to bark wounding, fungal inoculations and sterile inoculations combined. All trees had a marked increase in the number of resin ducts in the year of inoculation compared with previous years, suggesting that formation of traumatic resin ducts play an important role in the development and maintainance of enhanced resistance. 相似文献

The high accuracy of log positioning and the stability of saw blades in breakdown machinery in modern sawmills have reduced
the need to add margins for sawing variations. Oversize green sawing dimensions are still needed, but mainly to allow for
drying shrinkage. This has put a new focus on better adapting green sawing dimensions to the shrinkage behavior of wood. In
this study, a method for optimization of green sawing dimensions using stochastic simulation is presented. Normal distributions
were generated for planed dry dimensions, kerf width, and target moisture content. The minimum share of boards exceeding the
specified dry dimensions was decided, and deformations in boards from all positions in the cross section in a number of logs
were simulated. The simulated shrinkage allowance from stochastic simulations was compared to experimental results from an
industry test and to finite element results based on material data for Norway spruce. The results showed that the green width
of the sawn boards should increase when the number of boards in the center yield increases. The green thickness of boards

Two species of the tree pathogenic fungus Heterobasidion spp. exist in Sweden, Heterobasidion annosum s.s. and Heterobasidion parviporum. Both species are known to infect Norway spruce (Picea abies). The aim of the study was to examine the interspecific competition between H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum as well as their colonization rate in fresh Norway spruce wood. Equal amount of conidiospores from each species was sprayed together on 30 fresh, previously uninfected, Norway spruce billets. After incubation in a greenhouse, the proportion of Heterobasidion spp. colonies belonging to each species was recorded. Of the 196 colonies isolated from the upper part of billets, 195 were H. parviporum. All isolated colonies further down in the billets were H. parviporum. To study the colonization rate, H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum were sprayed alone on 30 spruce billets each, incubated and growth recorded both vertically and horizontally. H. parviporum grew further down in the billets (p = 0.008) and covered a larger area (p < 0.001) than H. annosum s.s. While H. annosum s.s. and H. parviporum both infected fresh Norway spruce wood H. parviporum outgrew and outcompeted H. annosum s.s during the early colonization stage. 相似文献

We developed a basal area growth model for recovery of advance growth of Norway spruce trees after clear-cutting. Stem diameter growth at ground level and needle-mass characteristics were measured on permanent sample plots in Estonia. Both tree ring analysis (destructive sampling on one sample plot) and yearly repeated measurement data (two plots) were used to quantify advance growth. Basal area growth of small trees was estimated by multiple regression analysis. Previous-year basal area of the tree and basal area growth explained tree performance the next year. Tree needle-mass variables characterizing the acclimation status of the tree were included in the model as explanatory factors. Needle samples (one shoot from the upper third of each tree crown) were collected each year after the growth period from all sample trees. Needle masses of shoots from consecutive years were correlated and this variable was used as a predictor in the simulation model. Accelerating growth was observed in trees that exceeded the growth threshold in the year after release: the greater the needle mass per shoot, the greater the acceleration in growth. Competition among advance regeneration trees was included in the model: small trees under taller neighbors exhibited reduced growth. We found that trees released from a long period of heavy shade can survive, but the time needed for acclimation and resumption of competitive growth rates is considerably longer than for trees released from light shade. Such trees can be used for forest regeneration, but competition control (particularly reducing the proportion of fast-growing hardwoods) is required. 相似文献

Abstract Thermal modification at elevated temperatures changes the chemical, biological and physical properties of wood. In this study, the effects of the level of thermal modification and the decay exposure (natural durability against soft-rot microfungi) on the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) of the sapwood and heartwood of Scots pine and Norway spruce were investigated with a static bending test using a central loading method in accordance with EN 408 (1995). The results were compared with four reference wood species: Siberian larch, bangkirai, merbau and western red cedar. In general, both the thermal modification and the decay exposure decreased the strength properties. On average, the higher the thermal modification temperature, the more MOE and MOR decreased with unexposed samples and increased with decayed samples, compared with the unmodified reference samples. The strength of bangkirai was least reduced in the group of the reference wood species. On average, untreated wood material will be stronger than thermally modified wood material until wood is exposed to decaying fungi. Thermal modification at high temperatures over 210°C very effectively prevents wood from decay; however, strength properties are then affected by thermal modification itself. 相似文献

isolated from TMP was analyzed for amino acid composition. There was about twice the amount of acidic amino acid material
compared with basic amino acids, and the presence of glucosamine indicated that the isolated polypeptides also contained glycoproteins.
The presence of proteins in ray cells and fiber tracheids in TMP adds to the chemical heterogeneity of the structurally complex

In this paper, the potential stem wood production for Norway spruce was estimated for different regions in Sweden. This was done by using basic physiological relationships of intercepted radiation versus biomass production and knowledge of how a water deficit reduces the potential production, derived from results of field experiments on nutrient optimisation. To scale these relationships up to regional and national levels, data of incident radiation and humidity during the growing season for all of Sweden were used. The figures for potential and attainable production indicate that the temperate to boreal climate allows considerably higher production than the current production, if availability of water and nutrients is non-limiting. In northern Sweden, the attainable production is ca. 300% higher than the current production and in southern Sweden, the yield can be increased by ca. 100%. In absolute numbers, as a mean for a whole rotation period, it is possible to achieve an annual stem-wood dry mass production of 7–9 Mg ha−1 in southern and central and ca. 5–6 Mg in northern Sweden. This increased production would mean that rotation periods can be shorter than they are now by 20–30 years in southern Sweden and by ca. 50–60 years in northern Sweden. 相似文献

Three clones of Norway spruce (Picea abies) were studied for their response to mass‐inoculation with the blue‐stain fungus Ceratocystis polonica. The effect of different pretreatments (fungal inoculation and wounding) before mass‐inoculation was investigated for their possible role in an acquired resistance reaction. Pretreated trees showed enhanced resistance to the subsequent mass‐inoculation relative to control trees that received no pretreatment. Furthermore, the fungal colonization of inoculated trees was less than that of wounded trees. The phenolic content of the bark, analysed by RP‐HPLC, was compared in trees receiving different treatments. Trees inoculated with C. polonica had higher average concentration of (+)‐catechin, taxifolin and trans‐resveratrol than wounded trees. Both inoculated and wounded trees had higher average concentrations of these compounds than control trees. The effect of the phenolic extract of Norway spruce bark on the growth of the root rot fungus Heterobasidion annosum and the blue‐stain fungi C. polonica and Ophiostoma penicillatum were investigated in vitro. Heterobasidion annosum was not negatively affected, and the extracts had fungistatic effects on the blue‐stain fungi. ABSTRACTAutumn sown small seedlings for later transplanting into large containers have been introduced in Swedish forest tree nurseries. Containerized transplants of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) from three Swedish nurseries were frozen stored during the autumn of 2014 to find out storability and post-storage vitality. Seedling storability was determined by measuring electrolyte leakage after freezing shoots to ?25°C (SE L diff?25), by measurements of dry matter content (DMC) of seedling shoots and by the commercial molecular test ColdNSure?. Vitality of seedlings after storage was determined by measuring the leakage of electrolytes from shoots (SEL), and seedlings were also tested in regrowth tests. All three methods for storability assessment gave similar predictions, except in one case where DMC showed “not storable” for successfully stored seedlings. Our results indicated that young transplants can be successfully short term stored before reaching the target levels for safe long-term storage of conventional seedlings. Early storage of young transplants resulted in low post-storage survival and vitality expressed as root growth capacity and shoot electrolyte leakage (SEL). A prolonged duration in storage generally resulted in lower survival as well as lower root growth capacity and higher levels of SEL, especially for seedlings stored at earlier dates. 相似文献

Abstract Using data from nine spacing experiments of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) in Norway, covering wide ranges of site index and initial spacing, this study evaluated stand basal area and volume responses to initial spacing and examined whether these responses varied by stand ages or site quality. We developed nonlinear regression models that described the standing basal area or volume responses to initial spacing along with site index and stand ages. The results show that closer spacings produced higher standing basal area and volume than wider spacings. The response curves are highly nonlinear in younger stands and become nearly linear in mid-rotation stands, indicating stronger responses at younger ages and weaker responses as age increases. Furthermore, for young stands, spacing effects are stronger at closer than at wider spacings. The basal area and volume responses to initial spacing tend to be similar across site indices. However, the interaction of site index and stand age on spacing responses makes it difficult to isolate the effect of site index on spacing responses. Mortality is higher and begins earlier at closer spacings than wider. The mean diameter of the largest 100, 400, 600, and 800 trees ha?1 increased with spacing in three out of the nine experiments. Dominant height did not vary by initial spacing for any of the experiments. The findings suggest that the extra volume production in stands of closer initial spacing is restricted to early stand development. 相似文献

Callose (1,3-beta-glucan) is a suggested physiological indicator of aluminum (Al) toxicity in crop plants. It is not known if callose serves a similar function in forest trees, because quantitative data on callose formation in tree roots are limited, particularly under controlled conditions. To evaluate callose as a physiological indicator of Al toxicity in tree roots, we quantified callose formation in roots of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) seedlings. Seedlings were grown in simulated soil solutions in the presence or absence (control) of Al under controlled conditions. In seedlings grown in solutions containing 280 microM Al, callose concentrations in roots were twice as high as control values after 6 h of Al treatment and 5 times higher than control values after 1 day. Thereafter, root callose concentrations gradually decreased and were only twice as high as control values after 7 days. The presence of various Al concentrations in the simulated soil solutions indicated that callose was induced by a relatively low Al concentration (84 microM). We conclude that callose in tree roots is an indicator of Al toxicity. 相似文献

Summary The overall aim of this study and series of papers is to address the key variables for timber quality and to optimize the utilization of Norway spruce timber with respect to construction purposes. It is the end-user's degree of overall satisfaction that determines the quality of a product. Therefore, the performance of structural timber cannot solely be defined by mechanical properties. Geometric performance (warp) must be improved if timber is to continue as an important building material.An experimental study of the spatial variation in warp and bending properties of fast-grown Norway spruce is introduced. In this paper, the growth characteristics are presented as a function of stand and location in the tree. The knot area ratio (KAR) was considerably higher in the core (0.31) compared with timber closer to bark (0.21). The top log studs had higher KAR (0.38) than the corresponding butt log studs (0.31). The average grain angle was 3.5% ( 2°) and appeared not to vary radially. The presence of compression wood was much more common in the top log timber (75%) than in the butt log (44%). An optimization model is specified to analyze forest management without any restrictions on the forest management system. The data on forest growth comes from unique field experiments and is used to estimate a nonlinear transition matrix or size-structured model for Norway spruce. The objective function includes detailed harvesting cost specifications and the optimization problem is solved in its most general dynamic form. In optimal uneven-aged management, stand density is shown to be dominated by limitations in natural regeneration. If the goal is volume maximization, even-aged management with artificial regeneration (and thinnings from above) is superior to uneven-aged management. After including regeneration and harvesting costs, the interest rate, and the price differential between saw timber and pulpwood, uneven-aged management becomes superior to even-aged management. However, in the short term the superiority is conditional on the initial stand state. 相似文献

Summary In a previous paper in this series it was concluded that the warp (twist, crook and bow) of structural timber products is of utmost importance for end-user satisfaction. In this paper, a study of the spatial variation of warp of fast-grown Norway spruce is presented. The material, 372 studs (45 × 70 × 2900 mm2), was cut from different radial and longitudinal positions in trees from two stands.The results indicated that twist and crook were at maximum near the pith. However, twist decreased much more rapidly with the distance from pith compared with crook. Crook associated with core studs was larger in the butt log than in the top log, while twist and bow in core studs appeared not to vary longitudinally. Heartwood formation in the butt log juvenile core did not diminish warp propensity. Twist was rather well correlated to the distance between pith and centroid of cross section. The ratio of grain angle to pith distance was the best parameter to predict twist. Presence of compression wood increased bow and crook significantly, while ring width, density and knot area ratio did not substantially contribute to explain warp variation.A moisture content change from 18% to 12% decreased the overall acceptability, expressed by stud grade yield, from 76% to 43%. Summary Strength and stiffness together with some properties characterizing the stand and the growth of trees were studied. Specimens (45 × 70 × 2900 mm3) were cut from different radial and longitudinal positions, from fast-grown trees from two stands in southern Sweden. These trees had relatively large annual rings (4–6 mm) and were not representative of Norway spruce in Sweden but are an example of the intensivelymanaged stands which will probably constitute a substantial part of the raw material supply in the future.The results indicate that the mean values for strength and stiffness were lowest for the core studs and increased further away from the pith. This radial variation in strength and stiffness appears to be associated with the variation in ring width. Density alone, on the other hand, does not explain the radial variation but should be used together with either ring width or knot area ratio to explain the stiffness and strength respectively. The increase in the strength and stiffness of the core studs from the butt logs to the top logs was significant. Density alone was found to be the best variable to explain the longitudinal variation between the butt logs and the top logs. The heartwood formation in the butt log juvenile core appeared not to have a positive effect on strength and stiffness. The blue‐stain fungus Ceratocystis resinifera colonizes wounds on living Picea spp. and other conifers in Europe and North America. Little is known regarding the pathogenicity of this fungus and consequently, four Norwegian C. resinifera isolates were inoculated on to Norway spruce (Picea abies) using two different techniques. These included single‐point inoculations on young trees (two inoculations per tree on 14‐year‐old trees) and mass‐inoculations on older trees (~200 inoculations per tree on 34‐year‐old trees). In both experiments, C. resinifera induced minor symptoms that in most cases did not differ significantly from inoculation with sterile agar. The virulent blue‐stain fungus C. polonica, which was inoculated for comparative purposes, induced extensive symptoms, causing 83% dead cambium circumference and 82% blue‐stained sapwood, and long necrotic lesions in the phloem. The results suggest that C. resinifera is non‐pathogenic or only mildly pathogenic to Norway spruce and does not present a threat to these trees. 相似文献
