Pancreatic torsion in a dog

A 6-month-old male intact Cane Corso mastiff dog was presented for a recent history of vomiting, abdominal pain, and lethargy. A diagnosis of pancreatic torsion was made during abdominal exploratory surgery and was confirmed with histopathology. The dog underwent partial pancreatectomy and recovered with no complications.     

Liver lobe torsion in a dog

Abdominal radiographs of a dog presented for anorexia and vomiting revealed an ill-defined increase in opacity caudal to the stomach and caudal displacement of the small intestines. Ultrasonographs revealed an enlarged liver lobe with vascular thrombosis. Left medial liver lobe torsion was confirmed at postmortem.     

Mesenteric and gastric volvulus in a dog

Concomitant gastric and mesenteric volvulus was diagnosed in a 5-year-old Komondorok. Despite surgical correction of both displacements, the dog died 14 hours after surgery. Although gastric volvulus is a well-known syndrome in dogs, mesenteric volvulus has been reported infrequently. This report illustrates the importance of radiography in cases of suspected gastric volvulus to rule out other potential causes of acute abdominal distention, including mesenteric volvulus.     

Liver torsion and associated bacterial peritonitis in a dog.

A Malamute was examined for acute abdominal pain and collapse. Radiographs of the abdomen showed a pneumoabdomen, and a lucent mass in the region of the liver. Abdominocentesis yielded an inflammatory exudate with bacteria compatible with a Bacillus or a Clostridium sp. A quadrate lobe torsion was found at postmortem.     

Gall bladder torsion and rupture in a dog

A 6-year-old desexed female German Shepherd dog was referred to the Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital for assessment and management of acute onset vomiting, diarrhoea, polydipsia and lethargy of 2 days duration. Surgical, microbiological and histological findings were consistent with necrotising cholecystitis secondary to gall bladder torsion, resulting in gall bladder rupture and secondary non-septic bile peritonitis. A chronic peritoneopleural perforation resulting from an abdominal cavity foreign body and congenital peritoneopericardial hernia were also present. The dog made a full recovery following cholecystectomy, foreign body removal, repair of the peritoneopleural perforation and peritoneopericardial herniorrhaphy. This is the first recorded case of gall bladder torsion in the dog.     

Testicular torsion in the dog: a review of 13 cases.

The clinical and pathological features of testicular torsion in 13 dogs are reviewed. The affected gonads were intra-abdominal in 11 animals, and inguinal and scrotal respectively in two others. In most cases, the torsion appeared to result from neoplastic enlargement of the testis.     

Gastric torsion in the dog III. Fundic gastropexy as a relapse-preventing procedure

In 36 dogs having recovered after nonsurgically treated gastric torsion, fundic gastropexy, including cauterization of the fundic wall before suturing, was performed 1 week to 3–5 months after the initial attack. One of the animals died of intercurrent disease and one could not be traced. Within an observation time of 1–5 months to 4–5 years (mean 18 months), no relapse occurred in the remaining 34 animals operated upon.     

Delayed urethral obstruction after uterine torsion in a pregnant dog

A 4 yr old pregnant female shih tzu was presented with abdominal discomfort and bloody vulvar discharge. The nongravid uterine horn was reflected caudally over the trigone, obstructing urine outflow. A cesarian section and ovariohysterectomy were performed. Postoperatively, the hematuria and pollakiuria resolved. Seventeen days later, the pelvic urethra was completely obstructed by a soft tissue mass that was identified by rectal palpation, blocked catheterization attempts, contrast radiography, ultrasonography, and surgery. Management included temporary cystostomy tube and definitive prepubic urethrostomy. Histologic diagnosis was severe, multifocal, necrosuppurative urethritis with fibroplasia, fibrosis, and cellulitis, apparently secondary to ischemia. Delayed urethral obstruction is a potential complication of canine uterine torsion.     

Chronic splenic torsion in a dog with an accessory spleen

A 4-year-old, neutered male, mixed breed Old English sheepdog was presented for evaluation and treatment of anorexia, vomiting, and diarrhea. Presumptive severe pancreatitis was diagnosed based on the referral bloodwork. Abdominal ultrasonography identified a suspected liver lobe torsion based on the presence of a normal spleen. However, an exploratory laparotomy identified a splenic torsion in addition to a grossly normal spleen.Key clinical message:This case demonstrates that a second, potentially large area of splenic tissue (ectopic or accessory) can be present in the dog; therefore, the presence of a normal appearing spleen on abdominal ultrasonography does not rule out splenic torsion.
