Among enteric caliciviruses, noroviruses belong to the genus Norovirus, one of the four accepted genera in the family Caliciviridae. These single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses are highly variable both genetically and antigenically. Several animal enteric caliciviruses that are morphologically indistinguishable and genetically closely related to human noroviruses have been identified. The first bovine enteric noroviruses were described in Great Britain and are known as Newbury Agent 2. At least three genetic clusters of porcine noroviruses join together within genogroup II noroviruses. Human noroviruses are the most important cause of acute gastroenteritis illness in people of all ages. In the USA, they are associated with approximately 30-50% of all food-borne outbreaks. Until now, noroviruses have not been associated with gastroenteritis outbreaks in immunocompetent animals. Neither bovine nor porcine noroviruses can replicate in cell culture, although human norovirus can grow in a complex 3D culture system. However, the recently discovered murine noroviruses can replicate in cell culture and are therefore used as model viruses to study human noroviruses. This review focusses on virus classification, virion structure, pathogenesis, epidemiology, immune response and diagnosis of animal noroviruses in comparison with human noroviruses. The classification of animal enteric caliciviruses within the Norovirus genus raises the question of whether transmission from an animal reservoir to humans could occur. Answering this question is important in determining the risk of cross-species infections affecting the epidemiology and evolution of these viruses and so complicating the control of human norovirus infections.  相似文献

抗菌药物具有预防和治疗动物疾病的作用,并在一定程度上可促进动物生长发育。畜禽粪便中残留的抗菌药物不仅会造成环境污染,还可导致动物源耐药性菌株在环境中的传播扩散,对公共卫生安全和人类健康带来威胁。采用高效便捷处理方法降低畜禽粪便中抗菌药物残留可在一定程度上减少生态环境污染。传统的处理方法有厌氧消化及好氧堆肥等,能有效减少畜禽粪便中抗菌药物的残留,但存在抗菌药物不能完全去除、处理条件要求高的缺点。近年来,利用黑水虻幼虫处理畜禽粪便中残留抗菌药物引起人们的关注。概述了畜禽粪便中常见的残留抗菌药物,分析了采用厌氧消化和好氧堆肥等传统处理畜禽粪便中抗菌药物的方法,以及利用黑水虻处理畜禽粪便中抗菌药物的新方法对残留抗菌药物的去除效率,以期为畜禽粪便中残留抗菌药物处理方法的研究与应用提供参考。  相似文献

Salmonella infection is one of the most prevalent reported food-borne diseases in industrialised countries, most often associated with eating contaminated eggs, poultry and pork. Traditionally, epidemiological investigations for Salmonella enterica have been based on phenotypic characteristics. However, the predominance of certain phenotypes within hosts or locations makes further epidemiological subgrouping necessary. The combination of conventional and molecular epidemiology data is yielding important insights into the understanding of the epidemiology of many infectious diseases, although at present there is no consensus on which molecular method is best suited for intraserotype differentiation within S. enterica. This paper reviews the current methodology for some of the most prevalent animal and human-associated serotypes.  相似文献

This article describes current methods of controlling acute bovine pulmonary emphysema (ABPEE) and edema, lungworm and gastrointestinal nematodes, and bloat in grazing beef cattle. Success in handling outbreaks of these conditions and in their prevention depends on an understanding of their epidemiology and pathogenesis. Supplementation with ionophore antibiotics is effective in prevention of ABPEE and bloat and may also prevent other diseases of cattle that graze lush pastures.  相似文献

1. Most people in the developed world agree on what 'animal welfare' is, although it is impossible to give it a precise scientific definition. 2. The argument is made that animal welfare is all to do with the feelings of animals and not the primary needs that these feeling have evolved to protect. 3. Acceptance of subjective feelings as a legitimate subject for scientific investigation has a long and well-established history in science. This acceptance was interrupted by the rise of Behaviorism in the 20th century, but now seems to be re-established. 4. Subjective feelings cannot be studied directly. However, in the animal welfare debate, indirect evidence on feelings is extremely useful, and methods for obtaining this indirect evidence are described. 5. The poultry species are capable of feeling several states of suffering including fear, frustration and pain. A start has been made to elucidate these states and the conditions that cause them, but much remains to be done. Recent evidence suggests that the poultry species may also be capable of experiencing pleasure. 6. It is concluded that, although poultry welfare is all to do with the subjective feelings of the birds, it is possible to be objective and scientific about these feelings. Investigation into poultry welfare, therefore, really is science rather than subjectivity.  相似文献

When early people made their appearance, zoonotic infectious diseases were already waiting, but epidemic diseases did not appear in human history until people began to live in large numbers under conditions of close contact, mainly during the last 10,000 years. Disease has decimated urban populations, conquered armies, and disrupted society. The focus here is on (1) the plague of Athens and the Black Death; (2) smallpox, influenza, and rabies; (3) avian influenza prion diseases, and foot & mouth disease; and (4) emerging and re-emerging diseases. All have veterinary public health associations. In Athens, Greece, in 430 BC, when the Spartans ravaged the countryside, hordes crowded into Athens so that orderly movements, space in which to live, and adequate supplies of food became impossible. Crowding of any population fosters disease transmission; chaos and disorder enhance it all the more. Out of northern Egypt came a terrible plague from across the Mediterranean Sea. The identity of the plague of Athens remains unsure, but the well-considered conclusion is Rift Valley Fever, a mosquito borne, viral zoonosis. The Black Death, also called the Plague, raged in Asia for centuries. In 1347, the Black Death was brought by a ship out of Asia to Sicily. The scenes of devastation were repeated throughout Europe, with 90% or more of the people dying in city after city. Influenza, too, has been a cause of periodic human epidemics, but the great pandemic of influenza occurred in the last months of World War I. In the years of highest occurrence, more than half the world's population became clinically infected. If veterinary public health had been born earlier, it could have led to elucidating the epidemiology of influenza and the plagues of Athens, Europe, and Asia. In turn, smallpox had also caused continual tragedy. In 1796, Edward Jenner began to harvest pustules of cowpox from children or infected cows and inject them into susceptible children. In 1980, the World Health Organization declared that smallpox had been eliminated from the world. Rabies, though, still strikes terror. A number of animal diseases, broadly termed emerging and re-emerging diseases, need surveillance because they have the potential to impact human health. From late in 2003 to 2007, the highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus in poultry infected at least 121 people and caused 62 deaths in four countries. The prion diseases, too, all have very high numbers in concentrated contacts. To control these diseases, veterinary public health is essential, with diagnosis, epidemiological surveillance, clinical manifestations, and prevention as primary measures.  相似文献

Rabies remains as one of the most feared zoonotic diseases in the world. All warm-blooded animals are susceptible to infection by the virus, but the main vectors of human infection are dogs and cats. The control of rabies largely depends on the prevention of infection of dogs and cats by vaccination in endemic areas and the control of their movement, including measures of quarantine and vaccination, in rabies-free countries. This paper provides an overview on recent developments in rabies, with particular emphasis on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and control.  相似文献

Backyard poultry production systems (BPS) are an important and widespread form of poultry production. There is a common perception that biosecurity standards in BPS are generally poor and BPS are usually associated with animal diseases and zoonoses. In this study BPS were identified in the vicinity of six wetlands, having these a higher risk of presenting and introducing avian diseases such as HPAI and Newcastle disease, as defined by the national veterinary services, in to Chile's main poultry production area. BPS were characterized through a field questionnaire and the main areas covered by the survey were BPS structure, biosecurity and value chain. The BPS identified in this study share most characteristics on biosecurity, poultry management and product commercialization, but it was possible to identify a certain degree of variation within and among the study sites. BPS in Chile are similar to those in other regions, with a relatively small flock size (average 37 birds), a low level of biosecurity measures and lack of poultry disease management. Management findings include that most farmers used mixed/partial confinement, with low or no biosecurity and disease control measures in place. Eggs were the main output and were used mainly for home consumption or sale at local markets. Sick birds' treatment with drugs approved for other species or for human use could represent a risk to human health, owing to the possible presence of drug residues in poultry products. Despite the different structures of the poultry sector worldwide, BPS can play a major role in disease maintenance and spread because its management conditions characteristics and the lack of animal health services adapted to these production systems. This should be an alert message to the veterinary authorities to improve coverage of veterinary assistance and surveillance activities in backyard poultry production.  相似文献

Rabies is a zoonotic, fatal and progressive neurological infection caused by rabies virus of the genus Lyssavirus and family Rhabdoviridae. It affects all warm-blooded animals and the disease is prevalent throughout the world and endemic in many countries except in Islands like Australia and Antarctica. Over 60,000 peoples die every year due to rabies, while approximately 15 million people receive rabies post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) annually. Bite of rabid animals and saliva of infected host are mainly responsible for transmission and wildlife like raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes are main reservoirs for rabies. The incubation period is highly variable from 2 weeks to 6 years (avg. 2–3 months). Though severe neurologic signs and fatal outcome, neuropathological lesions are relatively mild. Rabies virus exploits various mechanisms to evade the host immune responses. Being a major zoonosis, precise and rapid diagnosis is important for early treatment and effective prevention and control measures. Traditional rapid Seller's staining and histopathological methods are still in use for diagnosis of rabies. Direct immunofluoroscent test (dFAT) is gold standard test and most commonly recommended for diagnosis of rabies in fresh brain tissues of dogs by both OIE and WHO. Mouse inoculation test (MIT) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are superior and used for routine diagnosis. Vaccination with live attenuated or inactivated viruses, DNA and recombinant vaccines can be done in endemic areas. This review describes in detail about epidemiology, transmission, pathogenesis, advances in diagnosis, vaccination and therapeutic approaches along with appropriate prevention and control strategies.  相似文献

The development of the poultry industry and the consumption of poultry meat is traced over the past quarter of a century and related to the increased incidence of food poisoning in man. Factors affecting the spread of the main poultry pathogens which are of human significance are discussed. The pathogens considered are salmonella, campylobacter, staphylococci and clostridia. Various preventative measures are considered including rearing procedures for poultry, decontamination methods and education of the public. It is concluded that one of the most effective measures is irradiation of poultry and poultry products. The difficulties of introducing this control measure are recognised. It is concluded that more effective application of existing control methods would greatly reduce the hazards to public health.  相似文献

Pasteurella multocida is responsible for major animal diseases of economic significance in both developed and developing countries whereas human infections related to this bacterium are infrequent. Significantly, development of a carrier status or latent infections plays a critical role in the epidemiology of these diseases. Aiming at increased knowledge of these infections, we examine potential diagnostic and selected typing systems for investigating diseases caused by P. multocida. Detection of P. multocida from clinical specimen by; (i) isolation and identification, (ii) polymerase chain reaction (PCR), iii) specific hybridisation probes, (iv) serological tests and (v) other alternative methods is critically evaluated. These detection systems provide a wide spectrum of options for rapid diagnosis and for detecting and understanding of latent infections in herd/flock health control programmes, though PCR methods for detecting P. multocida in clinical specimen appear increasingly preferred. For establishing the clonality of outbreak strains, we select to discuss macromolecular profiling, serotyping, biotyping, restriction enzyme analysis, ribotyping and multiplex PCR typing. Although P. multocida infections can be rapidly diagnosed with molecular and serological tests, isolation and accurate species identification are central to epidemiological tracing of outbreak strains. Our review brings together comprehensive and essential information that may be adapted for confirming diagnosis and determining the molecular epidemiology of diseases associated with P. multocida.  相似文献

坏死性肠炎(necrotic enteritis,NE)是家禽中最重要的肠道疫病之一,呈世界性流行,严重危害养鸡业发展。人工复制鸡坏死性肠炎病例是研究该病发病机制及筛选有效药物的重要手段,然而在实际试验过程中,通常受实验动物、感染菌株、诱导病原等多方面因素影响而难以成功复制病例。鉴于此,现综述了影响鸡坏死性肠炎病例成功复制的关键因素,包括攻毒使用的实验动物、菌株毒素、菌株培养条件、诱导病因等,同时探讨了如何通过调整这些因素来改善人工复制鸡坏死性肠炎病例的严重程度,分析了鸡坏死性肠炎病例的病变评分系统,以期为鸡坏死性肠炎的实验室研究及综合防控提供理论基础。  相似文献

Ovine footrot remains the most important cause of lameness in sheep flocks in the UK, despite the existence of proven methods for the control of the disease. Recent research suggests that sheep farmers may be unaware of these methods and may allocate greater resources to treatment of footrot rather than to its prevention. Foot paring, topical treatments, vaccination and parenteral antibiotic therapy all have a role in treating sheep with advanced footrot infections, but prevention of severe infections is best achieved by the timely implementation of control programmes. These are usually based on footbathing and vaccination. For control programmes to be effective it is essential that the pathogenesis and epidemiology of footrot is understood and that control methods are implemented at appropriate times in the season, depending on climatic and pasture conditions. This article reviews these strategies and makes recommendations for steps to reduce the spread of footrot between flocks and to reduce the incidence of footrot within UK flocks.  相似文献

巴尔通体病是20世纪初发现的一类新的人畜共患病,巴尔通体属的成员已由原来的1个种发展到19个种,其中至少有5种可使人致病。由巴尔通体感染引起的疾病谱比较复杂,主要有猫抓病、卡里翁氏病、心内膜炎、杆菌性血管瘤和慢性巴尔通体血症等。另外,巴尔通体有时还会引起视网膜炎、脑炎、肾小球肾炎和肺炎等,给人畜健康带来巨大的威胁。随着宠物的不断增加,由巴尔通体引起的疫病呈上升趋势,对社会公共卫生造成潜在的危险性。为了探讨防控该病的方法,对有关巴尔通体的病原学、流行病学、致病机理、诊断及防治措施进行综述。  相似文献

Commercial poultry production is one of the flourishing ventures of animal production in Ethiopia. It has been providing to the demands of proteins at least to the urban population, though concurrent health constraints are hampering its intended potential. This study reports the influence of infectious diseases in commercial broiler farms in central Ethiopia. In this study, clinical signs, gross lesions, laboratory tests (serology, bacterial culture, histopathology and parasitology) and farm management data were used to identify major causes of outbreaks in an age specific manner in broiler chickens in three poultry farms in Debre Zeit, Central Ethiopia. The outbreaks detected in the farms were due to mycoplasmosis, salmonellosis, colibacillosis, coccidiosis and infectious bursal disease. It is observed that the occurrence of concurrent diseases in the farms significantly affects the productivity and health status of broilers. The risk factors that predispose birds to the various infections in the different farms studied were also recorded. In addition, recommendations were also provided.  相似文献

Coccidiosis of chickens is one of the commonest and economically most important parasitic diseases of poultry worldwide. Given the limitations of traditional approaches, molecular tools have been developed for the specific diagnosis of coccidiosis. Recently, a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based capillary electrophoresis (CE) method, employing genetic markers in the second internal transcribed spacer (ITS-2) of nuclear ribosomal DNA, was established for both analytical and diagnostic purposes. The application of this method to investigate the epidemiology of coccidiosis and genetic structures of Eimeria populations on commercial chicken establishments has discovered genetic variants of Eimeria (i.e., new operational taxonomic units OTU-X, OTU-Y and OTU-Z) which were (based on CE analysis) distinct from those of species of Eimeria identified previously in chickens in Australia. The present characterization of these OTUs, based on their ITS-2 sequences and phylogenetic analyses of selected sequence data, provides first evidence to support that OTU-X represents a population variant of Eimeria maxima, and that OTU-Y and OTU-Z represent cryptic species of Eimeria. Further biological and genetic studies are needed to rigorously test these proposals and establish the specific status of these OTUs and their importance as pathogens in chickens. An understanding of the epidemiology of these population variants or cryptic species in Australia is central to designing and implementing effective vaccination and control strategies.  相似文献
