The effects of electrode configuration and click polarity on brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) in dogs were investigated to clarify the inconsistent nomenclature for each peak. Four positive peaks (waves 1, 2, 3 and 4) before a deep negative trough and a fifth positive peak (wave 5) following the trough were the basic components of BAEP in dogs, which were easily identified regardless of recording conditions such as electrode configuration and click polarity. Additional peaks tended to be present when a noncephalic reference electrode and/or single-polarity (rarefaction or condensation) click stimuli were used. The Roman nomenclature for the individual positive peaks of BAEP in dogs is confused owing to variations in the observed waveforms among researchers, but click polarity and/or reference electrode position can explain all the previously reported variations in BAEP waveforms in dogs. When the criteria concerning wave V in the guidelines of BAEP in human beings are applied to avoid further confusion of Roman nomenclature in dogs, it is recommended that the basic five positive peaks (waves 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 as identified easily with Ai-Vertex configuration and alternating clicks) are designated as waves I, II, III, V and VI, respectively. Wave IV (wave 3b) occurs occasionally before wave V in dogs.Abbreviations BAEP

Effects of otitis on hearing in dogs characterised by brainstem auditory evoked response testing 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Hearing function was measured in normal dogs and in dogs with otitis using brainstem auditory evoked response testing. Data were obtained from 86 normal ears and from 105 ears with otitis, cntegorised into four degrees of severity. The data were analysed to illustrate the differences between the hearing function in the normal and abnormal ears and to estimate the degree of impairment associated with differing degrees of pathology. While severe hearing loss seemed to be present in the dogs with more severe otitis, only two individuals were identified as being totally deaf in the affected ears and no dogs were identified in which the cleaning and examination processes had caused damage to hearing function. Cleaning the ear canal produced measurable improvements in hearing in several dogs, indicating the profound effect of physical obstruction of the external ear canal by debris. It is concluded that most dogs with chronic otitis externa are not totally deaf and that the hearing impairment that does occur has the characteristics of conductive hearing loss. 相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine direct measurements of auditory pathways by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during the growth period of healthy Beagles, and to discover how canine brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) latencies vary in relation to these MRI measurements. Eighty healthy Beagles were tested at eight, 16 and 52 weeks of age (stages 1, 2, 3, respectively) with BAER and brain MRI. The BAER interpeak latency (IPL) II-V and brain MRI neural generators of BAER waves II and V were identified. A linear distance was calculated in millimeters in order to determine the approximate length of auditory pathways. Sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) of the auditory pathway between peak II and peak V was calculated for each group. A significant difference was observed between brain MRI distances among the three stages. Mean BAER IPL II-V were not significantly different between the three stages. The progressive growth of the skull and brain witnessed by the progressive increased distance of the MRI auditory pathways between peak II and peak V was not associated with a progressive maturation of the BAER IPL II-V. The SNCV of the auditory pathway between peak II and peak V was 6.14 m/sec for group 1; 6.76 m/sec for group 2; and 7.32 m/sec for group 3. 相似文献

Recordings of the middle latency of the auditory evoked potential (MLAEP) were made in eight conscious ponies. These traces were compared to those made under halothane anaesthesia with and without paralysis of the skeletal muscles. Recordings were also made from percutaneous electrodes placed along the neck with the same stimulus used for the auditory evoked potentials. The results of these experiments were used to deduce the origin of latencies in the auditory evoked potential occurring between 10 and 25 ms after the stimulus. The MLAEP was found to contain two positive peaks between the latencies of 10 and 25 ms. The first of these two peaks was not abolished by halothane anaesthesia or muscle paralysis. The second of these two peaks was abolished by halothane anaesthesia in all but one animal. In this animal the second peak was abolished by muscle paralysis. No peaks of corresponding latency were recorded from the percutaneous electrodes except from one electrode position at the caudal neck in one pony. The first peak of the middle latency auditory evoked potential seen in conscious ponies appeared to be of central nervous orign. The second peak appeared to be of muscular origin, possibly from the external auditory muscles. The second peak may be analogous to the post-auricular waveform described in man. 相似文献

Objective
To compare the effects of general anaesthesia using sevoflurane or alfaxalone on the brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) test in adult healthy cats.Study design
Prospective, clinical, ‘blinded’, crossover study.Animals
Ten feral adult healthy cats.Methods
Premedication consisted of dexmedetomidine (0.01 mg kg–1) intramuscularly (IM). The first general anaesthesia was induced and maintained with sevoflurane (treatment S) for physical examination, BAER test, complete blood tests, thoracic radiographs and abdominal ultrasound. The second general anaesthesia was induced with alfaxalone (treatment A) IM (2 mg kg–1) and maintained with alfaxalone (10 mg kg–1 hour–1) for the BAER test, followed by neutering surgery. The BAER recordings were compared for differences in latencies, amplitudes and waveform morphology. Data were analysed using Student's t test and Wilcoxon rank test for paired samples for parametric and non-parametric data, respectively. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05.Results
General anaesthesia was uneventful; normal BAER comprising five peaks could be identified in both treatments. Mean ± SD latencies were 1.05 ± 0.09, 1.83 ± 0.11, 2.52 ± 0.19, 3.43 ± 0.17 and 4.39 ± 0.15 ms and 1.03 ± 0.04, 1.81 ± 0.73, 2.53 ± 0.15, 3.37 ± 0.13 and 4.33 ± 0.13 ms in treatments S and A, respectively. Median (interquartile range) amplitudes were 2.83 (0.67), 1.27 (0.41), 0.30 (0.40), 1.05 (0.82), 0.61 (0.38) microvolts and 2.84 (1.21), 1.49 (1.18), 0.26 (0.32), 0.91 (0.50) and 0.92 (0.64) microvolts in treatments S and A, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences in mean latencies or median amplitudes between both the anaesthetics.Conclusions and clinical relevance
This study demonstrates that there were no statistically significant differences between both the anaesthetics on the BAER test in adult healthy cats. Moreover, two possible anaesthetic protocols are described for cats undergoing this electrodiagnostic test. 相似文献7.
The brainstem auditory evoked response (BAER) was recorded from 7 unanesthetized and 27 methoxyflurane anesthetized dogs. A 0.1 msec, 70 dB stimulus delivered at 10 Hz evoked the expected seven wave BAER. Mean peak wave latencies and standard deviations were calculated. Differences were not found between neither right and left ears, nor male and female dogs. The anesthetized dogs had a significantly longer latency for all waves, except wave I, than the unanesthetized dogs. Use of the BAER as a diagnostic technique for brainstem lesions is recommended.Publication No. 1702, School of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University, AL 36849, USA 相似文献

Aims
Auditory plasticity in response to unilateral deafness has been reported in various animal species. Subcortical changes occurring in unilaterally deaf young dogs using the brainstem auditory evoked response have not been evaluated yet. The aim of this study was to assess the brainstem auditory evoked response findings in dogs with unilateral hearing loss, and compare them with recordings obtained from healthy dogs. Methods
Brainstem auditory evoked responses (amplitudes and latencies of waves I, II, III, V, the V/I wave amplitude ratio, wave I-V, I-III and III-V interpeak intervals) were studied retrospectively in forty-six privately owned dogs, which were either unilaterally deaf or had bilateral hearing. The data obtained from the hearing ears in unilaterally deaf dogs were compared to values obtained from their healthy littermates. Results
Statistically significant differences in the amplitude of wave III and the V/I wave amplitude ratio at 75 dB nHL were found between the group of unilaterally deaf puppies and the control group. The recordings of dogs with single-sided deafness were compared, and the results showed no statistically significant differences in the latencies and amplitudes of the waves between left- (AL) and right-sided (AR) deafness. Conclusions
The recordings of the brainstem auditory evoked response in canines with unilateral inborn deafness in this study varied compared to recordings from healthy dogs. Future studies looking into electrophysiological assessment of hearing in conjunction with imaging modalities to determine subcortical auditory plasticity and auditory lateralization in unilaterally deaf dogs are warranted.12.
A 15-month-old Appaloosa colt had pyrexia, weight loss, diarrhea, and dependent edema. Abnormal laboratory findings included anemia, hypoalbuminemia, and hyperglobulinemia. Activities of liver-specific enzymes in this colt were high. Analysis of a liver biopsy specimen resulted in a presumptive diagnosis of tuberculosis. We recommend that liver biopsy be used as a diagnostic procedure if the differential diagnosis in a horse includes avian tuberculosis or granulomatous enteritis, especially if serum activities of liver-specific enzymes are high. 相似文献

This study investigated whether Dalmatian puppies with normal hearing bilaterally had the same click-evoked brainstem auditory potential characteristics as age-matched dogs of another breed. Short-latency brainstem auditory potentials evoked by condensation and rarefaction clicks were recorded in 23 1.5- to 2-month-old Dalmatian puppies with normal hearing bilaterally by a qualitative brainstem auditory evoked potential test and in 16 Beagle dogs of the same age. For each stimulus intensity, from 90 dB normal hearing level down to the wave V threshold, the sum of the potentials evoked by the 2 kinds of stimuli were added, giving an equivalent to the alternate click polarity stimulation. The slope of the L segment of the wave V latency-intensity curve was steeper in Dalmatian (-40 +/- 10 micros/dB) than in Beagles (-28 +/- 5 micros/dB, P < .001) puppies. The hearing threshold was lower in the Beagle puppies (P < .05). These results suggest that interbreed differences may exist at the level of cochlear function in this age class. The wave V latency and wave V-wave I latencies differences at high stimulus intensity were different between the groups of puppies (4.3 +/- 0.2 and 2.5 +/- 0.2 milliseconds, respectively, for Beagles; and 4.1 +/- 0.2 and 2.3 +/- 0.2 milliseconds for Dalmatians, P < .05). A different maturation speed of the neural pathways is one possible explanation of this observation. 相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the middle latency auditory evoked potential (MLAEP) in awake dogs and dogs anesthetized with 2 concentrations of sevoflurane. ANIMALS: 10 adult Beagles. PROCEDURE: The MLAEP was recorded while dogs were awake and anesthetized with sevoflurane (end-tidal concentration, 2.7% or 3.5%).Three needle electrodes were inserted SC, and click stimuli were delivered biaurally. Signal acquisition, averaging, and analysis were performed by use of computer software developed in-house. Signals were recorded for 128 milliseconds, and the responses to 1,024 stimuli were averaged. Waveforms from 10 recordings in each dog were averaged, and latencies of peaks were measured. Data acquired for awake dogs and dogs anesthetized with high and low sevoflurane concentrations were compared statistically. RESULTS: Sevoflurane anesthesia attenuated the MLAEP so that only peaks P0, Na, and Pa could be identified. The MLAEP changes were maximal at the lower concentration of sevoflurane evaluated. The latencies of these peaks were significantly shorter in awake dogs, compared with values in anesthetized dogs. No difference in the peak latency was detected between the sevoflurane concentrations. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In terms of CNS responsiveness, the effects of anesthesia with sevoflurane are similar to those of anesthesia with isoflurane. Data suggest that sevoflurane is not the inhalant agent of choice in a research setting where electroencephalographic measurements are to be recorded during anesthesia. The depression of the MLAEP waveform by sevoflurane also suggests that the MLAEP is not a suitable tool with which to monitor anesthetic depth during sevoflurane anesthesia in dogs. 相似文献

A 9‐year‐old Warmblood gelding underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the carpal and proximal metacarpal regions for evaluation of prolonged right forelimb lameness. Magnetic resonance findings were indicative of desmopathy of the right lateral carpometacarpal ligament and the interosseous ligament between the third and fourth metacarpal bones. Based on the MR findings and lack of response to conservative therapy, surgery using a drilling technique was performed to facilitate fusion of the right carpometacarpal joint. After surgery and a 6‐month rest and rehabilitation programme, the horse returned to soundness. This case report describes a unique combination of lateral carpal/proximal metacarpal soft tissue injuries that resulted in prolonged lameness and were treated with facilitated arthrodesis of the carpometacarpal joint. These soft tissue injuries should be considered as a differential diagnosis in horses with lameness localised to the proximal metacarpal/distal carpal region. 相似文献

A 2-year-old Trakehner filly with pulmonary histoplasmosis is presented. Clinical signs included weight loss, intermittent fever, dyspnea and depression. Diagnosis was based on thoracic radiography, transtracheal wash cytology and lung aspirate cytology. A 5-week regimen of Amphotercin-B administered intravenously resulted in clinical recovery and return of the animal to normal activity. A brief review of histoplasmosis in man and animal is included. 相似文献

Brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) waveforms were recorded as a means of objectively evaluating auditory and brainstem function in horses. BAEP recordings were readily and repeatably recorded from horses, under minimal restraint, using signal averaging equipment. Clearly identified BAEP waveforms were obtained with compression clicks of 30-100 dB (HHL) at 10 Hz applied in the external auditory meatus of one ear and masking white noise (10 dB lower) in the other ear. Vertex positive (upwards) waveforms I through V were obtained with an active, subdermal electrode over the ipsilateral and contralateral zygomatic processes of the temporal bones and the reference electrode over the vertex. Recording sweep duration was 10 ms, amplifier sensitivity 10 microV/division, display gain x 10 and low and high amplifier filters set at 200 Hz to 2 kHz. Such recordings can be useful in evaluation of all clinical cases suspected of showing degrees of deafness, vestibular disease or brainstem disease, and in monitoring the progress of such cases. 相似文献
