Cost-effective rollover protective structures (CROPS) are less costly model-specific rollover protective structure (ROPS) retrofits that are being developed and evaluated with the hope of increasing adoption and eventually preventing or mitigating injuries due to tractor overturns. A dynamic cohort of the estimated retrofittable non-ROPS tractors (accounting for attrition due to aging) was tracked over a 20-year period to determine the expected costs, as well as the expected number of fatal and non-fatal injuries resulting from tractor overturns. Two alternatives were tracked: No-ROPS and Install-CROPS. For a starting cohort size of 1,065,164 (an estimate for the year 2004), the Install-CROPS option prevented an estimated total of 878 (192 fatal and 686 non-fatal) injuries over the 20-year period. Expected costs were $513 million (cost of installing CROPS on all the non-ROPS tractors plus cost of the associated injuries) and $284 million (cost of injuries resulting from the No-ROPS option) over the same time period. Thus, the net cost per injury prevented was $260,820. When the cost of intervention ($1000 for purchasing, shipping, and installation of existing ROPS retrofit) was used in the analysis, the cost-effectiveness ratio was $927,000 per injury prevented over the 20-year period. Thus, installing CROPS instead of existing ROPS retrofits improved the cost-effectiveness ratio substantially, with a 72% reduction in the net cost per injury prevented.  相似文献

Cost-effective rollover protective structures (CROPS) are tractor model-specific rollover protective structures (ROPS) that are as effective as existing ROPS retrofits (passed standardized structural static testing such as SAE J2194), but less costly (less than one-half the cost of existing ROPS retrofits). This study estimated the expected effects and costs at a per-tractor level for two options: No-CROPS and Install-CROPS. Expected injuries per tractor were 0.00169 with no CROPS and 0.00016 with CROPS installed, resulting in 0.00153 injuries prevented per tractor over a 20-year period. Expected costs were $457 and $248 with and without CROPS, respectively, over the same time period, giving the cost per injury prevented as $136,601. Comprehensive sensitivity analyses indicated that the probability of an overturn is one of the most important variables. When the cost of intervention ($1,000 for purchasing, shipping, and installation of ROPS retrofit) is used in the analysis, the cost-effectiveness ratio is $497,000 per injury prevented over the 20-year period. Thus, installing CROPS instead of existing ROPS retrofits improved the cost-effectiveness ratio substantially, with a 73% reduction in the net cost per injury prevented.  相似文献

Agriculture has one of the highest fatality rates of any industry in America. Tractor rollovers are a significant contributor to the high death rate. Rollover protective structures (ROPS) have helped lower these high fatality rates on full-size tractors. However, a large number of older tractors still do not use ROPS due to the difficulty of designing and creating a mounting structure. To help reduce this difficulty, engineering plastics were evaluated for use in a ROPS mounting structure on older tractors. The use of engineering plastics around axle housings could provide a uniform mounting configuration as well as lower costs for aftermarket ROPS. Various plastics were examined through shear testing, scale model testing, and compressive strength testing. Once a material was chosen based upon strength and cost, full-scale testing of the plastic's strength on axle housings was conducted. Finally, a mounting structure was tested in static ROPS tests, and field upset tests were performed in accordance with SAE Standard J2194. Initial tests revealed that the ROPS mounting structure and axle housing combination had higher torsional strength with less twisting than the axle housing alone. An engineering plastic ROPS mounting structure was easily successful in withstanding the forces applied during the static longitudinal and lateral ROPS tests. Field upset testing revealed that the mounting structure could withstand the impact loads seen during actual upsets without a failure. During both static testing and field upset testing, no permanent twisting of the mounting structure was found. Engineering plastic could therefore be a viable option for a universal ROPS mounting structure for older tractors.  相似文献

This research compares state-level rollover protective structure (ROPS) prevalence rates from the early and mid-1990s to those observed in the years 2001 and 2004. In addition, state-level ROPS prevalence rates are compared to state-level tractor overturn fatality rates. Tractor data for 1993-1995 and for 2001 and 2004 for all tractors and ROPS-equipped tractors in use on U.S. farms were derived from surveys conducted for NIOSH by the USDA-NASS. Changes in ROPS prevalence rates at the state level between the two time periods were assessed using a two-sample paired t-test with unequal sample sizes. Poisson regression was used to assess the association between ROPS prevalence rates and tractor overturn fatality rates at the state level. Overall, 49 of the 50 states had an observed increase in the percentage of farm tractors equipped with ROPS from 1993-1995 to 2001 and 2004. This increase was statistically significant for 34 states. Large shifts in ROPS prevalence were found within individual states and in clusters of states. These include a major increase in the southeastern U.S. and some western states. However, a core of states in the northeast (many of them in or near the Appalachian Mountains) through the upper midwest remain in the bottom quartile for ROPS prevalence. For the years 1992 through 2004, the highest fatality rates were observed in many of the same states that were identified previously as having persistently low ROPS prevalence rates. There is a clear relationship between low state-level ROPS prevalence rates and high state-specific tractor overturn fatality rates. While progress has been made in increasing the percentage of ROPS-equipped farm tractors, it is projected that ROPS prevalence rates will not reach a protective level nationally until after 2015. Regionally, the northeast and midwest will not reach protective levels of ROPS-equipped tractors until after 2020. Based on the adoption rates observed, tractor overturn rates will likely continue to be a more localized, but significant, public health issue for several states beyond the year 2020. The results of this study show the geographic areas of the U.S. where the greatest need exists, and where a greater emphasis should be placed on ROPS promotion activities. However, addressing this public health issue on a large scale will require resources and an organized commitment, which have historically been lacking.  相似文献

This article reviews the current knowledge on terrestrial enchytraeid diversity in Latin America and it outlines the research potential that this group offers. Enchytraeids occur worldwide in all soils with sufficient moisture, oxygen and nutrient supply, but knowledge on their diversity and functioning in the tropics is practically non-existent, except in Latin America. Here, taxonomic efforts and research projects have led to the knowledge of currently 62 terrestrial or semi-aquatic species. Abundance of enchytraeids could be determined at the species level, and differences in the ecological behaviour of species were detected concerning factors such as soil type and land use. Especially South America harbours a rich and idiosyncratic enchytraeid fauna, dominated by genera or species absent or rare in other regions of the world, which is interesting from the phylogenetic point of view. However, only a minute fraction of the actual diversity is known to-date. Seventeen species are possibly peregrines. Densities appear to be comparable to those in temperate regions, from below 10,000 to 270,000 ind. m−2, suggesting that enchytraeids may be as important for soil processes as in temperate regions. Site-specific species richness makes enchytraeids good biological indicators. Enchytraeids provide a widely open field for research in Latin America ranging from taxonomy and faunistics over biogeography, phylogenetics, comparative morphology, and developmental biology, to fundamental and applied ecology. The widespread ignorance concerning enchytraeids among scientists and naturalists as well as the current taxonomic impediment should be overcome by sound taxonomical and ecological work, training courses, identification manuals and popularization.  相似文献

The main conclusions of the Malian-Dutch “Primary Production in the Sahel (PPS)” research project, which was carried out during 1976–1981 (Penning de Vries and Djitèye, 1982), may be summarized as follows: (1) poor soil quality is just as great a barrier to rural development as water shortage; (2) animal production is high per unit area, compared with similar ecological zones in the U.S.A. and Australia; (3) attempts to increase production without due attention to the shortage of soil nutrients are bound to fail; (4) socio-economic conditions determine the feasibility of productive investments in agriculture in the Sahel. This article presents the PPS approach to publicizing these results and promoting a badly needed revision of development policy in the Sahel.  相似文献

The project AdaMus within the newly founded Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre BiKF aims to understand the prospective ecosystem stress responses and adaptive potential of species and communities to multiple stressors to provide reliable predictions of future developments in terrestric, aquatic and marine environments.

Conclusion

Long-term experiments with terrestrial, aquatic and marine species and communities will be conducted under IPCC predicted climate conditions. In terrestric and limnic experiments, additional co-stressors such as pesticides and alien species are introduced to test for interactions. In the case of marine plankton, potential consequences of multiple climate-related changes in the physical environment (temperature, salinity and oxygen) will be analysed.  相似文献

The primary goal of the Florida Atmospheric Mercury Study (FAMS) is to quantify the seasonal and geographical variability in the atmospheric deposition of Hg and other trace elements in central and south Florida. Precipitation, aerosol, and gaseous Hg samples have been collected at seven sites in Florida for periods ranging from 3 to 24 months. The summertime wet season in south Florida accounts for 80 to 90% of the annual rainfall Hg deposition. Depositional rates in south Florida are 30 to 50% higher than those from central Florida. Particle phase measurements range from 2 to 18 pg/m3Hg at all sites. Measurements of monomethylmercury in precipitation range from <0.005 to 0.020 ng/L.  相似文献

Leaching tests have demonstrated that metals and other inorganic contaminants are released from pulverised fuel ash (PFA) under laboratory conditions. Consequently, it is necessary to review the potential risks posed by large earthwork structures constructed of PFA. In this study, the findings of the recently completed risk assessment for unbound PFA in the Waste Protocols Project are compared to the results of equivalent risk assessments carried out using leachate data for PFA samples collected from the Barlow PFA storage mound at Drax Power Station. Current recommendations for an environmental code of practice for the construction of earthworks using PFA are considered in relation to the results of the generic risk assessments. A tiered methodology for the impact assessment, investigation and risk assessment to be adopted for the placement of PFA fill in large construction projects or within above ground storage mounds is presented. This methodology is intended to provide a framework for earthwork design engineers to use in order to ensure that a thorough assessment is made of the possible effects of PFA bulk fill earthworks or above ground storage mounds on the environment. Crude composition, lipid composition, and tocopherols, ascorbic acid, cholesterol, phytosterols, and squalene content together with fatty acids and antiplatelet activities of total, neutral, and polar lipids of avgotaracho (wax-covered, dried, and salted Mugil cephalus roe) were studied and compared with those of similar products. Wax and steryl esters accounted for 63.7% of roe lipids followed by phosphatidylcholine (PC), which comprised 20.3%. Wax esters were rich in saturated fatty alcohols, monounsaturated fatty acids, and long chain omega3 highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFA). The fatty acid distribution in roe total and neutral lipids was similar to that of wax esters, while in polar lipids, the omega3 HUFA predominated. Avgotaracho provides significant amounts of protein, fat, alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, and PC, certain amounts of squalene and phytosterols, and cholesterol at levels comparable to hens' eggs. Total, polar, and neutral lipids of avgotaracho exhibited a strong inhibition of platelet activating factors and thrombin, with polar lipids being more active. The results obtained indicate that avgotaracho is a food of high nutritive value, rich in protein and lipids with a healthy lipid profile in terms of omega3/omega6 ratio and major fatty acid classes, while the antiplatelet activity of its oil indicates a putative antithrombotic potential.  相似文献

We address the effects of erosion on the environmental services provided by the soil and explore possibilities for integrating soil erosion impacts in cost–benefit analyses of agri-environmental policies. As a case study, we considered the continued soil erosion caused by the traditional cereal farming system which is financially supported by the Zonal Program of Castro Verde. This case study illustrated the conflict between the preservation of biodiversity habitat requirements and the maintenance of soil productivity. We conclude that soil erosion is currently a major threat to the long-term sustainability of the Cereal Steppe of Castro Verde and largely reduced the cost-efficiency of public expenditure in local biodiversity conservation. Although replacement cost has proven to be a suitable method to determine the cost of soil productivity loss from erosion, we argue that there is a need to frame the erosion cost estimate obtained within more integrative approaches of assessing erosion costs.  相似文献

Environmental pollution with chromium(Cr) is harmful to humans, animals and plants, while in plants it causes diminished growth,anatomical alterations and death. In the present study, the potential value of marigold(Tagetes erecta) in the phytoremediation of Cr has been investigated. The randomized experimental design involved the exposure of plants to nutrient solutions containing 0.00,0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.16 or 0.24 mmol L~(-1)Cr(Ⅲ). Chromium toxicity was observed at Cr(Ⅲ) concentrations ≥ 0.12 mmol L~(-1) as demonstrated by diminished growth of the aerial parts and reduced density of the root system. Increasing Cr(Ⅲ) concentrations in the nutrient solution resulted in a higher bioaccumulation of total Cr in the tissues, although translocation from roots to aerial parts was not efficient(maximum value of 25% at 0.12 mmol L~(-1)Cr(Ⅲ)). The Cr bioaccumulation was up to 11-fold greater in roots than in the aerial parts. Tagetes erecta exhibited leaf plasticity when exposed to Cr, indicating the existence of a tolerance mechanism to Cr in this species. Chromium caused a reduction in xilem vases, resulting in a plastic effect in T. erecta leaves that increased the metal tolerance in culture solution. Tagetes spp. are potential Cr hyperaccumulators; at Cr(Ⅲ) concentrations up to 0.12 mmol L~(-1), the plants accumulated levels above that proposed for hyperaccumulators and still maintained a considerable growth and even flourished. However, this study was conducted in nutrient solution, and studies on species confirmation as Cr hyperaccumulator should be conducted in soils for further clarification.  相似文献

Background, aim, and scope

The membrane interphase probe (MIP?) from Geoprobe Systems® has frequently been applied in different countries for the characterization of soil contaminated with volatile organic carbons (VOCs). Experience shows that misinterpretation of the collected data is common. This is mainly due to the lack of understanding and knowledge related to the detectors used, their detection limits, and the sensitivity of the MIP system. It has been noticed that the sensitivity of the system given by the producer and by different users are rather optimistic, e.g., the values given are lower (= better) than those actually experienced in the field. A need for a better understanding of the MIP system sensitivity, combined with a more scientifically based interpretation of the collected data, exists.

Materials and method

Both laboratory tests (using solutions) as well as field measurements were carried out using different detector configurations to allow a better interpretation of the detector signals/system sensitivity and to collect qualitative information. These configurations were: (1) detectors stand alone; (2) the use of a 2-ml sample loop, and (3) a purge and trap system. The configurations (2) and (3) are used in combination with a capillary column to carry out on-site qualitative and semiquantitative analyses.

Results and discussion

With respect to the configuration of “detectors stand alone,” detection limits for toluene (in aqueous solutions) range between 4 ppm (flame ionization detector—FID) and 10 ppm [photo ionization detector (PID)]. For chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs), observed limits are 10 ppm (FID), 4–50 ppm (PID), and 3–10 ppm [dry electrolytic conductivity detector (DELCD)]. When using the 2-ml sample loop, relatively high concentrations have to be initially present in the soil. Observed detection limits for mono-aromatic hydrocarbons are 5–100 ppm; for CAHs, 1–50 ppm; for alkanes, 250–400 ppm; and for MTBE, 25 ppm. The application of purge and trap results in a better resolution and the detection of lower concentrations. Consequently, a better identification of the pollution with depth is possible. In this case, the detection limits are a function of the concentrations and the flushing time. In relation to the qualitative analyses, it was found that the configuration of the MIP-system with the built-in capillary column and the 2-ml sample loop or the purge and trap preconcentrator, respectively, are useful to carry out on-site analyses, thus allowing a better identification of the pollution in a vertical profile.

Conclusions

The measurements carried out using the MIP with detectors stand-alone or in combination with a loop or trap, or connected to a column, confirm that analysis is indeed very useful to characterize VOC source zones when knowing and understanding its performance. This relates mainly to the detection limits of the MIP system. For a selection of parameters, such limits have been obtained. These values seem to be more realistic than those found in the few references where numbers are given. For the qualitative measurements, it can be concluded that a better resolution is obtained, and pollutants present in lower concentrations will be detected when using the purge and trap. It is advised to determine the optimal flushing time and the detection limit of the expected pollutants in advance.

Recommendations and perspectives

This study indicates that there is still a need for further measurements and discussion between users. Finally, additional data should result in a better interpretation of the collected field data.  相似文献

The dose-response relationship of the water-soluble carbohydrate concentrate (WSCC) from wild grape ( Vitis thunbergii Sieb. & Zucc.) on intestinal health was investigated in this study. WSCC contained carbohydrates up to 71.9 g/100 g, including arabinose-rich pectic polysaccharide, hemicelluloses, glucose, and fructose. The consumption of WSCC (0.5 and 1.5 g/100 g of diet) effectively (P < 0.05) shortened gastrointestinal transit time (-62.3 to -63.0%), decreased toxic cecal ammonia (-59.3 to -63.0%) and daily fecal ammonia output (-29.7 to -41.4%), decreased the activities of fecal β-glucuronidase (-78.6%), β-glucosidase (-80.5 to -87.5%), mucinase (-64.6 to -72.7%), and urease (-83.2 to -86.0%), increased fecal moisture content (116-129%), and also increased short-chain fatty acid levels in cecal contents (1.8-3.3-fold). These findings suggested that consumption of wild grape WSCC might diminish the exposure of intestinal mucosa to toxic ammonia and other detrimental compounds and, hence exert, favorable effects on improving gastrointestinal milieu.  相似文献

Long term data to estimate population trends among species are generally lacking. However, Natural History Collections (NHCs) can provide such information, but may suffer from biases due to varying sampling effort. To analyze population trends and range-abundance dynamics of Swedish longhorn beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae), we used collections of 108 species stretching over 100 years. We controlled for varying sampling effort by using the total number of database records as a reference for non-red-listed species. Because the general frequency of red-listed species increased over time, a separate estimate of sampling effort was used for that group. We observed large interspecific variation in population changes, from declines of 60% to several hundred percent increases. Most species showed stable or increasing ranges, whereas few seemed to decline in range. Among increasing species, rare species seemed to expand their range more than common species did, but this pattern was not observed in declining species. Historically, rare species did not seem to be at larger risk of local extinction, and population declines were mostly due to lower population density and not loss of sub-populations. We also evaluated the species’ declines under IUCN red-list criterion A, and four currently not red-listed species meet the suggested threshold for Near Threatened (NT). The results also suggested that species’ declines may be overlooked if estimated only from changes in species range.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Microbial siderophore-chelated Fe(III) is suggested to be an important source of Fe for plants, although it is hardly reduced by plant roots. Here, we investigated the efficacy of the easily reducible artificial microbial siderophore tris[2-{(N-acetyl-N-hydroxy)glycylamino}ethyl]amine (TAGE)-Fe(III) as an alternative Fe source to correct Fe deficiency in rice plants, and compared it to that of the natural siderophore deferoxamine B (DFOB)-Fe(III). We also evaluated the absorption of Fe from TAGE-Fe(III) by the Strategy I-like system of gramineous plants using nicotianamine aminotransferase 1 (naat1) mutant rice, which does not synthesize phytosiderophores. Fe(III)-siderophores were synthesized in vitro. Nipponbare rice and its naat1 mutant were reared in soil and gel cultures to determine Fe availability. Hydroponically grown naat1 mutant seedlings were used for reducibility assays to determine the ability of rice roots to reduce Fe(III) chelated by TAGE or DFOB. The expression of a Fe-deficiency inducible gene was also determined, as well as chlorophyll and Fe concentrations. Reduci bility assays on naat1 mutant seedlings revealed that the reduction level of TAGE-Fe(III) was approximately three times higher than that of DFOB-Fe(III). Application of TAGE-Fe(III) to both culture medium and alkaline soil improved Fe chlorosis, growth, and Fe concentration in both naat1 and wild type plants, whereas application of DFOB-Fe(III) only did so in wild type plants. Easily reducible Fe(III)-chelates such as TAGE-Fe(III) can be a better source of Fe for rice plants than most natural microbial siderophores-Fe(III). Our study also demonstrated that rice plants have the ability to utilize microbial siderophores-Fe(III) as the Fe source through the Strategy I-like Fe acquisition system.  相似文献

Catastrophic events, either from natural (e.g., hurricane) or human-induced (e.g., forest clear-cut) processes, are a well-known threat to wild populations. However, our lack of knowledge about population-level effects of catastrophic events has inhibited the careful examination of how catastrophes affect population growth and persistence. For the critically endangered short-tailed albatross (Phoebastria albatrus), episodic volcanic eruptions are considered a serious catastrophic threat since approximately 80% of the global population of ∼2500 birds (in 2006) currently breeds on an active volcano, Torishima Island. We evaluated how short-tailed albatross population persistence is affected by the catastrophic threat of a volcanic eruption relative to chronic threats. We also provide an example for overcoming the seemingly overwhelming problems created by modelling the population dynamics of a species with limited demographic data by incorporating uncertainty in our analysis. As such, we constructed a stochastic age-based matrix model that incorporated both catastrophic mortality due to volcanic eruptions and chronic mortality from several potential sources (e.g., contaminant exposure, fisheries bycatch) to determine the relative effects of these two types of threats on short-tailed albatross population growth and persistence. Modest increases (1%) in chronic (annual) mortality had a 2.5-fold greater effect on predicted short-tailed albatross stochastic population growth rate (lambda) than did the occurrence of periodic volcanic eruptions that follow historic eruption frequencies (annual probability of eruption 2.2%). Our work demonstrates that periodic catastrophic volcanic eruptions, despite their dramatic nature, are less likely to affect the population viability and recovery of short-tailed albatross than low-level chronic mortality.  相似文献
