Intradural disc herniation is a rarely reported cause of neurologic deficits in dogs and few published studies have described comparative imaging characteristics. The purpose of this retrospective cross sectional study was to describe clinical and imaging findings in a group of dogs with confirmed thoracolumbar intradural disc herniation. Included dogs were referred to one of four clinics, had acute mono/paraparesis or paraplegia, had low field magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomographic myelography, and were diagnosed with thoracolumbar intradural disc herniation during surgery. Eight dogs met inclusion criteria. The prevalence of thoracolumbar intradural disc herniation amongst the total population of dogs that developed a thoracolumbar intervertebral disc herniation and that were treated with a surgical procedure was 0.5%. Five dogs were examined using low‐field MRI. Lesions that were suspected to be intervertebral disc herniations were observed; however, there were no specific findings indicating that the nucleus pulposus had penetrated into the subarachnoid space or into the spinal cord parenchyma. Thus, the dogs were misdiagnosed as having a conventional intervertebral disc herniation. An intradural extramedullary disc herniation (three cases) or intramedullary disc herniation (two cases) was confirmed during surgery. By using computed tomographic myelography (CTM) for the remaining three dogs, an intradural extramedullary mass surrounded by an accumulation of contrast medium was observed and confirmed during surgery. Findings from this small sample of eight dogs indicated that CTM may be more sensitive for diagnosing canine thoracolumbar intradural disc herniation than low‐field MRI.  相似文献

Sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping is a valuable and crucial diagnostic procedure in staging malignancies. We compared two non‐invasive techniques, near‐infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging and contrast‐enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), to identify the SLNs in three superficial anatomical regions in an animal model. Six healthy laboratory dogs were included in a proof‐of‐concept trial. A NIR fluorescent dye (Indocyanine Green) and microbubbles (Sonovue) were consecutively injected subdermally in the Inguinal, axillary and popliteal region to map the SLNs. Transcutaneous NIR fluorescence imaging identified SLNs in 17 out of a total of 18 occasions. CEUS identified SLNs in all regions (18/18). Whereas NIR fluorescence imaging performed better in the visualization of the afferent lymphatic tract, CEUS demonstrated different filling patterns of the SLNs, a feature potentially critical for the concept of SLN mapping in cancer patients. Both NIR fluorescence imaging and CEUS are safe, non‐invasive, practical and accurate methods to perform real‐time transcutaneous SLN mapping with potential in a clinical setting.  相似文献

Transrectal ultrasonography of the lumbosacroiliac area is routinely performed for the diagnosis of the cause of low back pain and poor hindlimb impulsion and engagement. The ventral aspect of the caudal lumbar intervertebral discs and vertebrae can be easily assessed transrectally with ultrasound while other imaging modalities have limitations for diagnosis of intervertebral disc injuries. This paper is a review of the ultrasonographic procedure for imaging the ventral aspect of the caudal lumbar and lumbosacral symphyses, especially the intervertebral discs. Normal images, findings and lesions of the three caudalmost lumbar intervertebral discs are described (between the 4th lumbar and the 1st sacral vertebrae).  相似文献

Computed tomography-dacryocystography (CT-DCG) was used to evaluate the nasolacrimal system in four patients (three dogs and one horse) that were admitted for evaluation of chronic epiphora, facial swelling, or facial trauma. The four patients are reviewed and the technique for performing CT-DCG is described. Additionally, the indications for this procedure are discussed. CT-DCG is advantageous because cross-sectional imaging provides superior resolution of the nasolacrimal apparatus and the relatively long, small-diameter, bony nasolacrimal canal in most veterinary patients.  相似文献

In humans affected with inflammatory myopathies, regions of altered signal intensity are found on magnetic resonance (MR) images of affected muscles. Although electromyography (EMG) is more practical for muscle disease evaluation, and a muscle biopsy is the only manner in which a definitive diagnosis can be made, MR imaging has proven useful if a specific anatomic localization is difficult to achieve. Three dogs with focal inflammatory myopathy diagnosed with the assistance of MR imaging are discussed and the findings are compared with those found in humans. MR images of the affected muscles in each dog were characterized by diffuse and poorly marginated abnormal signal on T1- and T2-weighted images. Marked enhancement was noted in these muscles after contrast medium administration. An inflammatory myopathy was confirmed histologically in all three dogs. A good association existed between the MR images and muscle inflammation identified histopathologically. MR imaging may be a useful adjunctive procedure for canine inflammatory myopathies.  相似文献

Computed tomography after contrast medium injection was performed in three mesaticephalic canine cadavers to image the auditory tube. Cadavers were positioned in lateral recumbency for imaging. A myringotomy incision was made in the left tympanic membrane of each dog, and contrast medium was infused into the ear canal and middle ear through a balloon-tip catheter. With this method, contrast medium filled the left bulla and auditory tube in all three cadavers. Computed tomography following contrast medium injection was effective for evaluation of the canine auditory tube. Future studies are required to determine the usefulness, as well as the safety, of this procedure in the evaluation of the auditory tube in other breeds of dogs as well as dogs with otitis  相似文献

Xanthogranulomatous disease is a rare condition, which can be caused by infection, inflammation, hemorrhage, immunologic disease, or inherited lysosomal disorders. It is characterized by non‐intracellular lipid and cholesterol deposits among an inflammatory infiltrate of vacuolated macrophages and giant cells. The diagnosis of xanthogranulomatous disease is challenging, with nonspecific imaging findings often misinterpreted as aggressive neoplastic processes in humans. In this retrospective case series study, we describe the diagnostic imaging characteristics of a disseminated xanthogranulomatous condition identified in five eclectus parrots (Eclectus roratus). Decreased serosal detail and celomic distension were present in all three birds radiographed, with multifocal variably sized celomic mineralization (3/3 birds), and extracelomic mineralized masses (1/3 birds). Celomic effusion with foci of celomic mineralization and hepatomegaly were identified in all birds (3/3) imaged with ultrasound. Finally, a mineralized mural ventricular mass was present in one of three patients imaged with CT, multifocal celomic mineralization with moderate to severe celomic effusion in two of three patients, diffuse severe proventricular and intestinal dilation in all three patients, and atherosclerosis of the major arterial trunks in all three patients. Veterinary radiologists should be aware of this inflammatory condition in birds, especially in eclectus parrots, and should be able to recognize the imaging features of xanthogranulomatous inflammation.  相似文献

The magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of foals with infectious and noninfectious arthritis are described. Six foals with infectious arthritis and three foals with noninfectious arthritis were grouped based on synovial fluid analysis results and examined with radiography and MR imaging. Four out of six foals with infectious arthritis had osseous lesions in MR images indicative of osteomyelitis and only 4/19 lesions were detected on digital radiographs. The three foals with noninfectious arthritis had no osseous lesions in MR images or radiographically. Of the six joints that had osseous lesions detected with MR imaging, three had at least one lytic lesion detected radiographically. Osseous lesions in the epiphysis, metaphysis, and physis appeared in MR images as T2W, short tau inversion recovery, and proton density hyperintense foci with a hypointense halo. The same lesions appeared hyperintense in the 3D RSSG water excitation pulse sequence but lacked a surrounding hypointense halo. Most joints of foals with infectious arthritis had heterogenous signals within the synovial fluid whereas all of the nonseptic joints had homogenous synovial fluid signals. MR imaging appears to be better than radiography in the detection of osseous lesions in foals diagnosed with infectious arthritis and may be a valuable screening test for the presence of osteomyelitis.  相似文献

Ultrasonography of the proximal third interosseus muscle (PTIOM, suspensory ligament) is routinely performed for the diagnosis of the cause of proximal metacarpal/tarsal pain. As a result of the complex architecture and deep localisation of this ligament, performing and interpreting ultrasonographic images of this structure can be difficult. This paper describes an ultrasonographic procedure that allows complete imaging of the PTIOM in the forelimbs using a combination of approaches including sagittal and palmarocollateral approaches on the weightbearing limb with linear and convex probes. Moreover, the procedure includes images made on the flexed limb, thereby allowing a better contact and a more complete representation of the PTIOM and palmar aspect of the metacarpal bones.  相似文献

A procedure for imaging the canine tympanic bulla, external ear canal and adjacent structures using currently available ultrasound equipment was established. Lateral and ventral transducer positions were identified for this purpose and a 6.5 MHz curvilinear transducer was considered to be optimal. The sonographic appearance of these structures in cadavers and live dogs unaffected by ear disease is documented. Fluid was introduced into the tympanic bullae of the cadavers and its presence could be identified through the bony wall of the bulla. The ability of ultrasound to differentiate between gas and fluid within the bulla has important clinical implications as this is a common occurrence in dogs with middle ear disease. Ultrasound has several advantages over other imaging modalities and the examination procedure was well tolerated by unsedated dogs.  相似文献

Detomidine (30 mcg/kg), xylazine (1.1 mg/kg) and xylazine/morphine (1.1 mg/kg and 0.75 mg/kg with 300 mg maximum dose) were compared in horses admitted for broncho-alveolar lavage. Horses (n=99) were randomized and clinicians performing the procedure were unaware of the sedation used. Horses were assessed during the procedure and for the next 2 hours. A significant number of xylazine/morphine-sedated horses showed excitement (p<0.05). The frequency of sinus block or arrest and second-degree atrioventricular block was significantly greater with detomidine. Detomidine-sedated horses were significantly more depressed than either xylazine or xylazine/morphine treated animals. Heart rate was significantly greater in horses given xylazine/morphine by 60 min. There was no significant difference between drug treatments related to reactions to the procedure or respiratory rate depression. The study indicated that all three methods are suitable for standing restraint. The more frequent adverse side effects (circling, muscle fasciculations, head pressing) accompanying xylazine/morphine should be considered.  相似文献

To evaluate the efficacy of a mixture of barium and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) suspension in upper gastrointestinal contrast studies, and to determine its optimal concentration and method for use, eight healthy beagle dogs underwent conventional upper gastrointestinal contrast imaging and a modified procedure using a mixture of barium sulphate and CMC. Four different procedures were carried out on the dogs at weekly intervals. In the first, the dogs were administered 10 ml/kg of 60 per cent barium suspension for conventional study of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The second, third and fourth procedures involved modified methods in which the dogs were given 10 ml/kg of a mixture of 25 per cent barium and 0.5 per cent CMC prepared to a low, moderate or high viscosity, respectively. All four procedures were evaluated by four criteria: the quality of the images obtained, the translucency and distensibility of the bowel, and the transit time. The method of imaging which used a moderately viscious CMC formulation provided excellent image quality, high translucency, a rapid transit time and suitable bowel distension to enable more precise diagnosis of disorders of the gastrointestinal tract.  相似文献

Bronchoalveolar lavage is a common diagnostic test for dogs with suspected pulmonary disease, however there is no published information on whether this procedure could affect the imaging characteristics of the lungs. Aims of this prospective experimental study were to describe computed tomography (CT) and radiographic features of the lungs after bronchoalveolar lavage in a sample of healthy dogs. Thoracic CT and radiographic images of eight healthy Beagles were acquired at the following time points: before bronchoalveolar lavage, immediately following bronchoalveolar lavage, and at 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 h following bronchoalveolar lavage. Lung consolidation or interstitial patterns were seen in CT and radiographic images immediately after the procedure. Radiographic lung patterns resolved within 2 h and CT patterns resolved within 24 h. Resolution of the CT pulmonary patterns in the ventral areas of the lungs was delayed compared to the dorsal areas. Mean CT imaging scores differed over time (P < 0.001), while mean radiographic imaging scores did not differ over time. This study suggests that thoracic radiography and CT imaging assessments should precede bronchoalveolar lavage procedures if possible, or be performed at least 24 h afterward.  相似文献

Ultrasonography is an easy and rewarding technique for the assessment of collateral ligaments of the distal interphalangeal joint (CL‐DIPJ) desmopathies and enthesopathies. Comparison between ligaments of both feet and oblique incidence improve sensitivity and specificity of the ultrasonographic diagnosis. The main limitation of the procedure is imaging the distal part of the CL‐DIPJ and corresponding fossa of the distal phalanx. Alone, or in combination with other imaging procedures, ultrasonography is valuable in the diagnosis of the injured structures, which may help to determine the corrective shoeing and the rehabilitation programme of the horse.  相似文献

Otitis media in the rabbit commonly results in fluid accumulation in the tympanic bulla. Radiographic detection of fluid in the tympanic bulla is only moderately sensitive in the dog and cat. The purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy of radiographic detection of fluid in the rabbit tympanic bulla for three different radiographic projections. Forty rabbit cadavers were used. Half of the tympanic bullae were randomly allocated to be filled with soft tissue material. Following this procedure, each specimen was radiographed in three projections: dorsoventral (DV), rostro 40° ventral-caudodorsal (R40°V-CdDO), and left and right latero 40° ventral-laterodorsal (Lat40°V-LatDO). After imaging, each specimen was frozen and sectioned to determine the content of the tympanic bullae. Images were interpreted and scored independently by two board-certified radiologists. There was no significant difference in sensitivity or specificity between the three projections when compared with the gross findings following sectioning, but observer confidence was highest for the DV projection. Accuracy of radiographic fluid detection was similar to that reported in the dog and cat. The DV and R40°V-CdDO allow comparison of both tympanic bullae on a single radiograph, but the DV was subjectively easier to position, while the Lat40°V-LatDO requires two radiographs for comparison.  相似文献

ULTRASOUND-GUIDED BIOPSY OF THE CANINE LIVER, KIDNEY, AND PROSTATE   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sixty-nine hepatic, 25 renal, and 16 prostatic biopsies were performed under ultrasound guidance using a biopsy guide. The majority (98 of 110) were tissue-core biopsies. Multiple attempts at obtaining a sample were required; however, in the kidney, the number of attempts was restricted to two. Adequate samples were obtained in 94% (65/69) hepatic, 88% (22/25) renal, and 94% (5/6) prostatic biopsies. Postbiopsy scanning did not demonstrate parenchymal hemorrhage. In three renal and one prostatic biopsy, gross hematuria, noted immediately following biopsy, resolved in 2–3 days. Animals with prostatic disease frequently had hematuria, making evaluation for this complication difficult. One animal died acutely 2 days following prostatic biopsy due to an unrelated problem, a ruptured aortic àneurysm. Complications were not encountered with the liver biopsy procedure. Animals biopsied under sedation tolerated the procedure well. The authors preferred to anesthetize uncooperative animals and those needing kidney biopsy to minimize the likelihood of complications. Problems encountered during the procedure, overlying bowel gas obscuring the target organ or poor visualization of the biopsy needle, were corrected by changing patient or transducer position or the procedure was postponed. The usefulness of the biopsy procedure is illustrated in four case reports.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to investigate in 20 healthy pigs the practicability of the oesophagogastroduodenoscopic examination technique in regard to equipment, method of examination, indications and its suitability as a diagnostical tool for the assessment of the oesophagus, stomach and upper duodenum in one procedure. Preparation of the patient for endoscopy, the procedure of the endoscopic examination as well as the topographical findings of the upper intestinal tract including the duodenum until the flexura duodenojejunalis are described. Flexible oesophagogastroduodenoscopy is a suitable method for the observation and natural visualisation of mucosal surfaces and for the digital documentation of peristaltic movements. The procedure is easy to perform in anaesthetized animals, is in most cases completed within 15 min, and can be repeated in the same animal. Indications of this interesting diagnostic imaging technique are discussed.  相似文献
