Sixteen Quarter Horse weanlings were used in a splitplot design experiment to determine the effects of dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) on mineral metabolism, osteocalcin concentration and variables of growth. Horses were blocked by age and sex and then randomly allotted to two treatment groups (High or Low). Experimental diets with a DCAD of +325 (High, H) and −52 (Low, L) were formed by supplementing diet H with sodium bicarbonate and diet L with calcium chloride. The DCAD was calculated as meq (Na+K)−(Cl+S)/kg of diet DM. The 25-week trial consisted of three 72 h collection periods at 150, 240 and 330 d of age during which a complete urine collection was taken.Multiple fecal grab samples were collected to represent every 2 h post-feeding during each collection period. Venous blood samples were taken for analysis of serum osteocalcin concentration. Weekly measurements were taken to monitor skeletal growth. Representative samples of feed, feces and urine were analyzed for mineral content and apparent mineral balances were calculated by difference. Although osteocalcin concentration did not differ significantly between diets H and L at 150 and 330 d of age, it was higher (P<.05) at d 240 in horses consuming diet H versus diet L. No difference (P>.05) was detected between treatments in any skeletal growth variable measured. Phosphorus balance and digestibility did not differ significantly between treatments across d of age. However, digestibility of P was lower (P<.05) at d 240 and 330 compared to d 150 in both treatments. Horses consuming diet L experienced an increased (P<.05) urinary and a decreased (P<005) fecal excretion of Ca compared to horses consuming diet H. Apparent daily Ca balance was higher (P<.05) in horses consuming diet L than those on diet H at 240 and 330 d of age. Furthermore, Ca digestibility decreased significantly between d 150 and d 240 and 330 in horses consuming diet H. Horses consuming diet L experienced no difference (P>.05) in Ca digestibility across d of age. These findings suggest that horses consuming a low DCAD diet are able to compensate for the increased urinary excretion of Ca by enhancing intestinal Ca absorption and thereby increasing daily CA balance and digestibility.  相似文献

Four mature, sedentary geldings were used in a 4x4 Latin square design experiment to study the effects of dietary cationanion balance (DCAB), defined as meq ((Na + K) - C1)/kg of dietary dry matter, on urine pH, blood pH and blood gasses. Four diets with actual DCAB levels of +21 (Low, L), +125 (Medium Low, ML), +231 (Medium High, MH) and +350 (High, H) were fed for a 21-day adjustment period and a 72 hour collection period. Total urine output was collected every 4 hours post feeding for 72 hours, and like times across days were combined for analyses. Arterial and venous blood samples were drawn, via indwelling catheters, hourly for 12 hours beginning at feeding. All samples were analyzed immediately after collection for pH, blood gasses and blood acid-base measures. Urine pH was lower (p<.05) at all measured intervals when geldings consumed diet L than when they consumed diets MI, MH and H. Least squares means for urine pH ranges from 5.40 to 5.86 on diet L, 6.79 to 7.30 on diet ML, 7.35 to 7.63 on diet MH and 7.52 to 8.14 on diet H. Blood pH, pCO2 and HCO3 values were also significantly lower in both arterial and venous samples when geldings consumed diet L than when fed diets MH and H. Results of this trial indicate that horses consuming highly anionic diets may experience a nutritionally-induced metabolic acidosis.  相似文献

Four mares and four geldings of Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred breeding were used in two simultaneous 4x4 Latin square experiments to study the effects of dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB), defined as meq ((Na+K)-C1)/kg dry matter, on urinary pH and mineral excretion in exercised horses. Diets consisted of a pelleted concentrate of corn, soybean meal and cottonseed hulls fed with bermudagrass hay. Treatments with DCAB of +5 (Low, L), +107 (Medium Low, ML), +201 (Medium High, MH) and +327 (High, H), meq ((Na+K)-Cl)/kg dry matter were formed by supplementing diet L with calcium chloride and ammonium chloride, diet ML with calcium chloride and diet H with sodium bicarbonate and potassium citrate (Table 1). Diet MH was not supplemented and served as the control treatment. Horses were conditioned aerobically for 6 weeks using long, slow, distance (LSD) workouts. During the experimental periods, horses were subjected to a combined exercise regimen alternating LSD with an interval-training protocol 6 days/week. There was a significant (P<.01) treatment effect on urine pH; least squares means for L, ML, MH and H were 6.73, 7.17, 7.38, and 7.92. Horses consuming diet L excreted more calcium in the urine (P<.05) than those consuming MH or H. Least squares means for daily urine calcium excretion tended to be linear across treatments and ranged from 19.66 g/day for diet L to 9.12 g/day for diet H. Urinary chloride excretion was higher (P<.05) for L than for MH or H. Horses fed diet H excreted more sodium (P<.05) in urine than horses fed the other diets. Lowering DCAB, increases urinary calcium loss; depending on the level of calcium intake, this could lead to negative calcium balance in exercising horses.  相似文献

Eight geldings and four mares were randomly assigned treatments within three 4x4 Latin square design experiments to study the effects of dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB) on mineral balance and dry matter digestibility in sedentary and anaerobically exercised horses. Four diets with an average DCAB (calculated as meq ((Na+K+) - Cl-)/kg of diet dry matter) of +24 (Low, L), +127 (Medium Low, ML), +227 (Medium High, MH) and +352 (High, H) were fed for a 21 day adjustment period followed by a 72 hour collection period. Diets consisted of a pelleted base concentrate of com, soybean meal and cottonseed hulls fed with either native prairie grass or bermuda grass hay in a 60:40 ratio. Diet L was formed by adding calcium chloride and ammonium chloride to the base concentrate, diet ML was formed by adding calcium chloride, and diet H was formed by adding potassium citrate and sodium bicarbonate. Diet MI-I received no supplementation and served as the control. Representative samples of feed, feces and urine were analyzed for mineral content and mineral balances were calculated by difference. Fecal output was greater (p <.05), and thus, dry matter digestibility was lower in exercised homes consuming diet L versus diet H. Sodium balance was greater (p <.05) in sedentary horses consuming diet MH as compared to those consuming diets ML and L Sodium balance was greater (p <.05) in exercised homes consuming diet H as compared to those consuming diets ML and L Potassium balance was greater (p <.05) in sedentary horses consuming diet H as compared to those horses consuming diet ML, however, potassium balance was not affected by DCAB in exercised horses. No significant differences were detected in chloride or magnesium balances in the sedentary horses, although chloride balance was greater (p <.05) and magnesium balance was lower (p <.05) in exercised homes consuming diet L as compared to all other diets. In sedentary homes, phosphorus balance was reflective of intake with differences (p <.05) observed between all treatments. However, in exercised homes, phosphorus balance was lower (p <.05) oniy for those consuming diet L. Calcium balance decreased significantly as DCAB decreased between all treatments in sedentary horses, while calcium balance in exercised homes was greater (p <.05) for homes consuming diet H as compared to those consum- ing diet L.Previous research from our laboratory has shown that both exercised and sedentary horses consuming diets with a low DCAB experience a nutritionally induced metabolic acidosis. The current data indicate that anaerobically exercised and sedentary horses consuming these diets excrete significantly more calcium in the urine resulting in decreased calcium balances. Prolonged consumption of diets with a low DCAB may lead to a significant demineralization of bone and a subsequent weakening of the skeleton.  相似文献

Formulation of rations to induce a compensated metabolic acidosis in the post-partum cow has proved a useful strategy for prevention of milk fever. Such acidification improves the ability of the animal to maintain calcium homeostasis by promoting the absorption of calcium from the intestine and mobilization of calcium from the bone. In humans, an acidogenic diet results in mild metabolic acidosis in association with a state of cortisol excess and this increase in plasma cortisol may increase bone catabolism. The objective of our experiment was to induce acidification by anionic salt supplementation and to study the effects of anionic supplementation on plasma cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) levels in sheep. Twenty-seven twin-bearing sheep were assigned to two experimental groups and a control group, depending on dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) (+272.6, -88.9 and +164.5 mEq/kg DM respectively). Sheep assigned to each dietary treatment received their respective rations beginning 6 weeks pre-partum and continuing until 12 days post-partum. Anionic diet induced a non-respiratory systemic acidosis in association with a mild increase in plasma cortisol concentration without changes in plasma ACTH levels. Our data suggest that the mild hypercortisolism observed in sheep fed the anionic diet may not be an effector for bone resorption induced by anionic salts. A mild hypercortisolism of this magnitude may lead to osteoporosis but this might require many years of adrenal hypersecretion while anionic salts are only used during the last weeks of pregnancy.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether plasma, urine, and fecal electrolyte and mineral concentrations differ between clinically normal horses and Thoroughbreds with recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) after consumption of diets varying in cation-anion balance. ANIMALS: 5 Thoroughbred mares with RER and 6 clinically normal mixed-breed mares. PROCEDURE: Each of 3 isocaloric diets designated as low, medium, and high on the basis of dietary cation-anion balance (DCAB) values of 85, 190, and 380, respectively, were fed to horses for 14 days. During the last 72 hours, 3 horses with RER and 3 control horses had daily urine and fecal samples obtained by total 24-hour collection. Remaining horses had urine samples collected daily by single catheterization. RESULTS: For each diet, no differences existed between horses with RER and control horses in plasma pH, electrolyte concentrations, and creatine kinase activity or in urine pH and renal fractional excretion (FE) values. Plasma pH, strong ion difference, bicarbonate and total carbon dioxide concentrations, and base excess decreased and plasma chloride and ionized calcium concentrations increased with decreasing DCAB. Urine pH decreased with decreasing DCAB. The FE of chloride and phosphorus were greatest for horses fed the low diet. The FE values for all electrolytes exept magnesium did not differ between urine samples obtained by single catheterization and total 24-hour collection. Daily balance of calcium, phosphorus, sodium, chloride, and potassium did not differ significantly among horses fed the various diets. CONCLUSIONS: In clinically normal horses and in horses with RER, the DCAB strongly affects plasma and urine pH and the FE of sodium, potassium, chloride, and phosphorus.  相似文献

Eight weanling Standardbred horses were used to evaluate the effects on growth and plasma glucose of two differently processed diets with identical ingredients fed at a rate of 3% of body weight, as fed, daily. The daily ration was divided into two equal feedings at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm. The hay and grain diet (diet HG) consisted of 50% alfalfa hay cubes and 50% of a commercial growing horse texturized grain mix fed as is, without any further processing, with each part fed in separate containers. The completely pelleted diet (diet P) consisted of the same proportions of the hay cubes and grain mix that was ground, pelleted, and fed in a single container. Two groups of four horses were fed either diet P or diet HG for two 21-day periods such that each horse consumed each diet for 21 days. On the last day of each feeding period, 7-mL blood samples were drawn into heparinized evacuated blood tubes for determination of plasma glucose concentration. Blood samples were drawn 30 minutes before the afternoon feeding, immediately before, and every 30 minutes thereafter for 5 hours. Analysis of variance found greater (P = .027) average daily gain for horses fed diet P versus diet HG. A nonsignificant difference was seen in feed efficiency (P = .057) for horses fed diet P versus diet HG. Plasma glucose changes were compared across treatments using area under the curve analysis. No difference (P > .05) was found in the postprandial plasma glucose changes between diet treatments.

The objectives of this study were to study the effects of different levels of dietary copper on copper and zinc balance, plasma minerals and serum biochemical parameters of mink in the growing-furring periods. One hundred and five standard dark male mink were randomly assigned to seven groups with the following dietary treatments: basal diet with no supplemental Cu(Control); basal diet supplemented with either 6,12, 24, 48, 96, or 192 mg/kg Cu from copper sulfate, respectively. The average daily gain(ADG) linearly(P = 0.0026, P = 0.0006) responded to increasing levels of Cu; maximal growth was seen in the Cu24 group. Feed efficiency tended to improve with the increase of dietary copper level(linear P = 0.0010, quad, P = 0.0011). Fecal copper, urinary copper, retention copper responded in a linear(P 0.05) fashion with increasing level of Cu. The effect of level of Cu was linear(P 0.001) for plasma Cu concentration. The serum glutamic-oxalacetic transaminase(GOT) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase(GPT) activities were increased linearly(P 0.05) with dose of Cu, but serum total protein(TP) and albumin(ALB) concentrations decreased linearly(P 0.05) as dietary copper levels increased. Effect of level of Cu was linear(P 0.001) for serum ceruloplasmin(CER) concentration or Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase(Cu-Zn SOD) activity. Supplemental dose of Cu linearly decreased serum triglyceride(TG)(P = 0.011) and total cholesterol(TC)(P = 0.007). Our results indicated that the activity of Cu-dependent enzymes was enhanced by increasing dietary Cu concentration and that supplementation of Cu in the diet of mink could alter the plasma lipid profile and copper concentration.  相似文献

An investigation was undertaken to demonstrate whether therapeutic treatment with ACTH raises hydrocortisone (cortisol) levels in horse urine above the limit (1000 ng/ml) established by the International Conference of Racing Authorities with the aim of controlling the abuse of cortisol and ACTH in equine sports. ACTH (200 iu) was administered i.m. to 3 Thoroughbred horses; urine and blood samples were collected at intervals afterwards and analysed by an immunoenzymatic system (ELISA) and HPLC-MS. To ascertain post exercise cortisol levels in untreated horses, 101 urine and 103 serum samples were taken from horses immediately after racing and analysed by ELISA. The peak urine level of cortisol, detected 8 h after ACTH administration, was around 600 ng/ml using either ELISA or HPLC-MS. The peak serum cortisol concentration was found to be around 250 ng/ml by ELISA, but consistently less by HPLC-MS. Mean cortisol levels in post race horses were 135.1+/-72.1 ng/ml in urine and 90.1+/-41.7 ng/ml in serum. High levels of the metabolite 20beta-dihydrocortisol in urine and the cortisol precursor 11beta-desoxycortisol in serum were found. The latter showed high cross-reactivity with cortisol on ELISA. In our experiment, treatment with ACTH 200 iu i.m. did not raise urinary cortisol levels above the 1000 ng/ml threshold proposed by the ICRA.  相似文献

The apparent retention and excretion of cations and anions were evaluated in 20 growing pigs to study the mechanisms by which an interaction between dietary K and Cl levels affected growth. All pigs maintained a positive retention of K+ and Cl- regardless of the dietary levels. The K x Cl interaction observed in growth studies previously but not in this study could not be explained by a simple interaction of one ion on the retention of the other. When pooled across dietary Cl levels, an increase in dietary K levels from .10 to .60% resulted in a calculated increase in daily K+ intake of 4.86 meq/kg of BW. Sixty percent (2.99 meq) of the increased K+ intake was excreted in the urine and counterbalanced by a decrease in urine NH4+ (3.06 meq). This decrease in NH4+ excretion could account for essentially all of the increase in N retention (3.51 mmol) observed when dietary K levels were increased from .10 to .60%. Thirty-three percent of the increased K+ intake (1.62 meq) was retained, but the counter ion could not be determined. Retention of Cl- was not changed as dietary K levels were changed. When dietary Cl levels were increased from .03 to .57%, 69% (4.06 meq) of the calculated difference in Cl- intake (5.90 meq) was excreted in the urine, which must have been counterbalanced by a decrease in undetermined organic anions (1.77 meq) and HPO4 = (1.50 meq) excretion, with a tendency for an increased NH4+ (.82 meq) excretion. The counter ions required to balance the increased Cl- retention (1.82 meq) as dietary Cl levels were increased from .03 to .57% could not be identified. Shifts in the retention and urinary excretion of Ca++, Na+, HCO3-, and SO4= did not seem to be quantitatively important in identifying the mechanisms by which dietary K and Cl levels alter growth. Based on these results, we conclude that alterations in growth caused by changes in dietary K and possibly Cl levels are mediated via mechanisms involving renal NH4+ metabolism.  相似文献

Arterial blood gas and acid-base values during maximal exercise over a 1.2 km distance were recorded in four Thoroughbred horses before and after the chemical induction of pharyngeal lymphoid hyperplasia (PLH). Samples were collected after galloping 0.8 km and 1.2 km, immediately upon stopping and 5 mins after exercising. In only one horse was any difference noted in the pre and post PLH induction results. The horse was more hypercapnoeic at the 1.2 km mark and also took much longer to complete the gallop when it had PLH. However, it also had signs of lower respiratory disease. In the other horses, the only changes which could be attributed to PLH were seen immediately upon stopping. It seems that PLH does not inhibit gas exchange during exercise unless the lesions are extremely severe.

Six mature horses were used in a 6×6 Latin Square design experiment to study the effects of varying dietary cation-anion differences (DCAD) on the acid-base status and energy digestibility of horses fed varying levels and sources of starch. Rolled corn, whole oats, or dehydrated alfalfa meal were used to make up the concentrate portions of the diets. Three diets had a DCAD above 300 meq/kg DM, and three below 160 meq/kg DM. This trial consisted of 11-day adjustment periods followed by 72-hour experimental collection periods. During that time, venous blood samples were drawn for analysis of pH, pCO2, HCO3, pO2, and lactate concentrations. Total urine was collected and measured for pH and mineral content. Representative feed and fecal samples were taken to determine energy digestibility. Blood lactate concentration showed no variation among treatments. Energy digestibility showed no variation with respect to DCAD, but did vary with starch intake. Urine pH, blood pH and blood HCO3 concentrations were significantly lower for horses consuming diets with a low DCAD as compared with high DCAD diets regardless of starch source or intake. Thus, it may be possible to reverse any metabolic acidosis caused by high starch intake by increasing the DCAD of the diet.  相似文献

One hundred fifty-three sows (average parity of 2.2) were used to determine the effects of dietary electrolyte balance (calculated as mEq/kg of diet for Na + K - Cl) on sows and their litters during lactation. The sows were fed corn-soybean meal-based diets (1.0% lysine, 1.0% valine, 0.95% Ca, and 0.80% P; as-fed basis) starting on d 109 of gestation and throughout the 21-d lactation experiment. Dietary electrolyte balance (dEB) was 0, 100, 200, 350, and 500 mEq/kg (as-fed basis), well above and below the dEB of 185 mEq/kg found in a simple corn-soybean meal-based lactation diet. To achieve the desired dEB, diets had the following: 1) 1.8% HCl (6 N) and 1.06% CaCl2, 2) 1.0% CaCl2, 3) 0.04% NaHCO3, 4) 1.29% NaHCO3, and 5) 2.54% NaHCO3 (as-fed basis). Increasing dEB increased blood pH (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), partial pressure of carbon dioxide (linear effect, P < 0.001), HCO3- concentration (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), and blood base excess (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001). However, increased dEB resulted in lower blood concentrations of K (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.04), Cl (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001), and ionized Ca (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001). Changing dEB did not affect ADFI; water usage, litter weight gain; sow weight change; sow backfat change; percentages of CP, lactose, and fat in the milk; percentage of sows returning to estrus; days to estrus; and number of pigs born alive in the subsequent litter (P = 0.06). However, piglet survivability to d 10 and overall was greatest with the lower dEB treatments (linear effect, P < 0.05). The pH (linear and quadratic effects, P < 0.001) and colony forming units of total bacteria (linear effect, P < 0.03) in the urine increased as dEB of the diet was increased. In conclusion, dEB had pronounced effects on the physiological status of sows and decreasing dEB below that in a simple corn-soybean meal-based diet decreased bacterial counts in the urine and increased piglet survivability. However, milk composition, sow and litter weights at weaning, and subsequent rebreeding performance of the sows were not affected by dEB.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of dietary inclusion of benzoic acid on utilization of the macrominerals Ca, P, Mg, K, Na, and Cl in growing pigs. Eighteen barrows, initial BW of 28 ± 1.7 kg, were assigned to 3 diets: a basal diet based on barley, wheat, soybean meal, corn, and field pea and formulated to contain 9.31 MJ NE kg− 1 and 8.84 g− 1 kg standardized ileal digestible lysine, or the basal diet containing 10 or 20 g kg− 1 benzoic acid by replacing tapioca starch. The pigs were fed the experimental diets a rate of 2.7 times the maintenance requirement for ME for 21 days. Faeces and urine were collected quantitatively from days 11 to 21, and blood and plasma was collected on days 1, 10, and 21. On day 21, the pigs were killed and the left femur was removed. Benzoic acid linearly decreased (P = 0.001) the urine pH from 7.32 to 5.32, and quadratically increased (P < 0.05) blood pH on day 21. Benzoic acid linearly increased (P < 0.05) the apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of Ca, P, and Na from 65 to 72%, 46 to 55%, and 78 to 90%, respectively, linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the ATTD of Cl from 94 to 93%, and did not affect the ATTD of Mg and K. Benzoic acid linearly increased (P < 0.05) the retention of Ca, P, and K from 58 to 67%, 46 to 54%, and 31 to 38%, respectively, linearly decreased (P < 0.05) the retention of Na and Cl from 57 to 48% and 75 to 44%, respectively, and did not affect retention of Mg. On day 21, benzoic acid linearly increased (P = 0.001) plasma P and quadratically increased (P < 0.05) plasma K or tended to increase (P = 0.05) plasma Na. Benzoic acid linearly reduced (P < 0.05) the concentration of ash in femur but not the amount of ash, reduced (P < 0.05) the concentration of Ca and Cl in femur ash, and linearly increased (P < 0.05) the concentration of P in femur ash. In summary, benzoic acid increased the utilization of dietary Ca, P, and K, did not affect the utilization of dietary Mg, and reduced the utilization of dietary Na and Cl. During swine feed formulation, effects of benzoic acid on macromineral utilization should be considered to ensure that macromineral requirements are met and not exceeded following benzoic acid supplementation.  相似文献
