Although producers’ prime objective may be to increase net returns, many are also interested in conserving and enhancing the quality the soil, water and air resources through adopting more environmentally friendly production practices. This study compared non-renewable energy inputs, energy output, and energy use efficiency of nine dryland cropping systems comprised of a factorial combination of three methods of input management [high (HIGH), i.e., conventional tillage plus full recommended rates of fertilizer and pesticides; reduced (RED), i.e., conservation tillage plus reduced rates of fertilizer and pesticides; and organic (ORG), i.e., conventional tillage plus N-fixing legumes and non-chemical means of weed and pest control]; and three crop rotation systems with varying levels of cropping diversity [a fallow-based rotation with low crop diversity (LOW); a diversified rotation using annual cereal, oilseed and pulse grains (DAG); and a diversified rotation using annual grains and perennial forages (DAP)]. The study was conducted over the 1996–2007 period on a Dark Brown Chernozemic soil (Typic Boroll) in the Canadian Prairies. As expected, total direct plus indirect energy input was the highest for the HIGH and RED input treatments (3773 MJ ha?1 year?1), and 50% less for ORG management. Most of the energy savings came from the non-use of inorganic fertilizers and pesticides in the ORG management treatments. Further, total energy use was the highest for the DAG treatments (3572 MJ ha?1 year?1), and similar but about 18% lower for the DAP and LOW crop diversity treatments compared to DAG. Thus, overall, the HIGH/DAG and RED/DAG systems had the highest energy requirements (4409 MJ ha?1 year?1) and ORG/DAP had the lowest (1806 MJ ha?1 year?1). Energy output (calorimetric energy content) was typically the highest for the HIGH input treatments (26,541 MJ ha?1 year?1), was about 4% less with RED, and 37% less with ORG management. The latter reflected the lower crop yields obtained with organic management. Similarly, energy output was the highest for the DAP treatments (25,008 MJ ha?1 year?1), about 5% less for DAG, and 20% less for the LOW crop diversity treatments. The higher energy output with the DAP treatments largely reflected that the entire harvested biomass of the forage crops was included in energy output, while for grain crops only the seed was included. The straw and crop residues from annual crops were returned to the land to protect the soil from erosion and to maintain soil organic matter as this is the recommended practice in this semi-arid region. In contrast to energy output and to net energy produced, energy use efficiency (measured as yield of grain plus forage produced per unit of energy input or as energy output/energy input ratio) was the highest for the ORG input treatments (497 kg of harvested production GJ?1 of energy input, and an energy output/energy input ratio of 8.8). We obtained lower, but generally similar energy use efficiency for the HIGH and RED input treatments (392 kg GJ?1 and ratio of 7.1). Thus, overall, ORG/DAP was the most energy efficient cropping system, while RED/LOW and RED/DAG generally ranked the lowest in energy use efficiency. Our findings support the current movement of producers toward ORG management as a means of reducing the reliance on non-renewable energy inputs and improving overall energy use efficiency of their cropping systems. Our results also suggest that moving away from traditional monoculture cereal rotations that employ frequent summer fallowing, toward extended and diversified crop rotations that use reduced tillage methods, although resulting in an increase in energy output, will not significantly reduce the overall reliance on non-renewable energy inputs, nor enhance energy use efficiency, unless perennial legume forages and/or legume grain crops are included in the cropping mix.  相似文献

In 2007–2009, field experiments were conducted to identify agronomic practices affording the lowest energy inputs (i.e. total energy inputs from fuels and other agricultural material inputs required to produce 1 L of ethanol) under potato-based bioethanol feedstock production in northern Japan. On a hectare basis, for a standard 4.4 m−2 planting density, conventional practices [two inter-row cultivations (weeding and preparation for ridging) and final ridging] yielded an estimate of 4.85 kL ha−1, representing an energy input of 5.86 MJ L−1. The energy input savings arising from the lesser fuel consumption associated with fewer tractor operations under no- and low-ridge cropping practices were outweighed by a reduction in ethanol yields, resulting in slightly greater energy inputs (6.09 ± 0.65 and 5.89 ± 0.30 MJ L−1, respectively). Similarly, poorer ethanol yields outweighed the reduction in energy inputs arising from lessened seed potato production-associated energy inputs under lowered planting densities of 3.8 and 3.3 m−2, resulting in ethanol yield-based energy inputs of 5.98 ± 0.33 and 6.01 ± 0.41 MJ L−1, respectively. Omitting fungicide applications significantly lowered biocide-related energy inputs, but yielded 20 and 63% lower ethanol yields for Phytophthora-resistant and -susceptible genotypes, respectively, substantially worsening energy efficiencies (6.24 ± 0.42 and 12.2 ± 6.3 MJ L−1). In northern Japan, use of high starch-yielding genotypes served as the only way to increase ethanol yields and improve energy efficiency for potatoes used in bioethanol feedstock production. A 29% greater ethanol yield (6.26 ± 0.46 kL ha−1) and 21% better energy efficiency (4.63 ± 0.23 MJ L−1) were achieved by replacing the standard potato cultivar with a high starch-yielding variety. The yield-based energy inputs with a high starch-yielding potato variety were significantly lower than those with conventional sugar beet in northern Japan (5.82 MJ L−1).  相似文献

Fumigation by plant volatile compounds and hot water treatment were tested in vitro and in vivo for their activity against Neofabraea alba (anamorph Phlyctema vagabunda), the cause of lenticel rot in apple fruit. In vitro trials with volatile compounds showed a consistent inhibition of pathogen growth by carvacrol, trans-cinnamaldehyde, citral and trans-2-hexenal, while (?)-carvone, hexanal, p-anisaldehyde, 2-nonanone and eugenol showed progressively lower inhibition. The greatest inhibition of mycelial growth was demonstrated by carvacrol (effective doses for 50 and 95 inhibition [ED50 and ED95] = 5.9 and 17.0 μL L?1, respectively; minimum inhibitory concentration [MIC] = 36.9 μL L?1) and of conidial germination by trans-2-hexenal (ED50 and ED95 = 4.1 and 6.9 μL L?1, respectively; MIC = 9.2 μL L?1). Hot water showed a complete inhibition of conidial germination in vitro after 10, 2 and 1 min of exposure at 40, 45 and 50 °C, respectively, and a complete inhibition of mycelial growth after 20 min of exposure at 75 °C. Among the volatile compounds tested, only 25 μL L?1 of carvacrol slightly reduced fungal infection on artificially infected apples (11.4% efficacy). Hot water treatment at 45 °C for 10 min showed high efficacy in the control of lenticel rot on apples. Reduction of infection was 80% in artificially inoculated fruit (cv Golden Delicious) and 90% in naturally infected fruit (cv Pink Lady) after 90 and 135 d of storage, respectively.  相似文献

To control postharvest decay, table grapes are commercially fumigated with sulfur dioxide. We evaluated ozone (O3) fumigation with up to 10,000 μL L?1 of ozone for up to 2 h to control postharvest gray mold of table grapes caused by Botrytis cinerea. Fumigation for 1 h with 2500 or 5000 μL L?1 of ozone were equal in effectiveness. Both treatments reduced postharvest gray mold among inoculated ‘Thompson Seedless’ grapes by approximately 50% when the grapes were examined after storage for 7 d at 15 °C following fumigation. In a similar experiment, ‘Redglobe’ grapes were stored for 28 d at 0.5 °C following fumigation for 1 h with 2500 or 5000 μL L?1 of ozone. Both treatments were equal in effectiveness, but inferior to fumigation with 10,000 μL L?1. Ozone was effective when grapes were inoculated and incubated at 15 °C up to 24 h before fumigation. The cluster rachis sustained minor injuries in some tests, but berries were never harmed. Ozone was applied in three combinations of time and ozone concentration (10,000 μL L?1 for 30 min, 5000 μL L?1 for 1 h, and 2500 μL L?1 for 2 h) where each had a constant concentration × time product (c × t) of 5000 μL L?1 × h. The effectiveness of each combination was similar. The incidence of gray mold was reduced by approximately 50% among naturally inoculated, organically grown ‘Autumn Seedless’ and ‘Black Seedless’ table grapes, and by 65% among ‘Redglobe’ table grapes, when they were fumigated with 5000 μL L?1 ozone for 60 min in a commercial ozone chamber and stored for 6 weeks at 0.5 °C. Residues of fenhexamid, cyprodinil, pyrimethanil, and pyraclostrobin were reduced by 68.5, 75.4, 83.7, and 100.0%, respectively, after a single fumigation of table grapes with 10,000 μL L?1 ozone for 1 h. Residues of iprodione and boscalid were not significantly reduced. Ozone is unlikely to replace sulfur dioxide treatments in conventional grape production unless its efficacy is improved, but it could be an acceptable technology to use with grapes marketed under “organic” classification, where the use of SO2 is prohibited, or if SO2 use were to be discontinued.  相似文献

A continuing challenge for commercializing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) to extend the storage life and control superficial scald of ‘d’Anjou’ pear (Pyrus communis L.) is how to initiate ripening in 1-MCP treated fruit. ‘D’Anjou’ pears harvested at commercial and late maturity were treated with 1-MCP at 0.15 μL L−1 and stored either at the commercial storage temperature −1.1 °C (1-MCP@−1.1 °C), or at 1.1 °C (1-MCP@1.1 °C) or 2.2 °C (1-MCP@2.2 °C) for 8 months. Control fruit stored at −1.1 °C ripened and developed significant scald within 7 d at 20 °C following 3–5 months of storage. While 1-MCP@−1.1 °C fruit did not develop ripening capacity due to extremely low internal ethylene concentration (IEC) and ethylene production rate for 8 months, 1-MCP@1.1 °C fruit produced significant amounts of IEC during storage and developed ripening capacity with relatively low levels of scald within 7 d at 20 °C following 6–8 months of storage. 1-MCP@2.2 °C fruit lost quality quickly during storage. Compared to the control, the expression of ethylene synthesis (PcACS1, PcACO1) and signal (PcETR1, PcETR2) genes was stable at extremely low levels in 1-MCP@−1.1 °C fruit. In contrast, they increased expression after 4 or 5 months of storage in 1-MCP@1.1 °C fruit. Other genes (PcCTR1, PcACS2, PcACS4 and PcACS5) remained at very low expression regardless of fruit capacity to ripen. A storage temperature of 1.1 °C can facilitate initiation of ripening capacity in 1-MCP treated ‘d’Anjou’ pears with relatively low scald incidence following 6–8 months storage through recovering the expression of certain ethylene synthesis and signal genes.  相似文献

Peel yellowing is a major postharvest problem of lime fruit. Research was conducted to control peel yellowing by UV-B irradiation. Mature green lime fruit were irradiated with UV-B doses at 0 (control), 8.8, and 13.2 kJ m?2 and then stored at 25 °C in darkness. UV-B treatment at 8.8 kJ m?2 efficiently delayed the decrease of chlorophyll content. A high level of chlorophyllide a accumulated in mature green fruit and then gradually decreased with the progress of peel yellowing. The chlorophyllide a level was higher in 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B-treated fruit than it was in the controls. The pheophorbide a level declined in lime fruit treated with 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B, especially during the development of yellowing. In addition, the pheophytin a level increased by 8.8 kJ m?2 UV-B treatment at the late period of storage. We concluded that UV-B treatment effectively suppressed chlorophyll degradation in mature green lime during storage, which suggests that UV-B irradiation is a usable method for prolonging the postharvest life of lime fruit.  相似文献

Inoculum of postharvest pathogens can accumulate inside storage rooms and contaminate new batches of fruit and vegetables, but this chain can be broken by disinfecting storage facilities between storage periods. Quaternary ammonium (QA) has been known for over 50 years as an efficient disinfectant against microorganisms, with wide applications in the food industry. The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of didecyldimethylammonium chloride (Sporekill, designated here as QAsk), against development of Botrytis cinerea after direct exposure or by ultrasonic fogging. Following direct exposure to a concentration of QAsk below 5 mg L?1, a population of 104 conidia of B. cinerea was inactivated after 2 min; ultrasonic fogging with QAsk at 500 mg L?1 took 30 min to achieve consistent inactivation. Fumigation at 20 °C was considerably more effective than fumigation at 5 °C, and similar results were obtained for three other postharvest pathogens, Penicillium expansum, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Alternaria alternata. These results show that conidia of B. cinerea are highly sensitive to direct exposure to QAsk, but that effective sanitation of a storage facility by ultrasonic fumigation requires a QAsk concentration two orders of magnitude greater.  相似文献

The effects of four pre-packaging UV-C illumination doses (1.6, 2.8, 4.8 and 7.2 kJ m?2) on quality changes of watermelon cubes stored up to 11 days at 5 °C were studied. Non-treated cubes were used as a control. Higher UV-C doses induced slightly higher CO2 production throughout the storage period, while no changes in C2H4 production were monitored. However, UV-C did not significantly affect the final gas partial pressures within modified atmosphere packages where levels of 3–6 kPa O2 and 13–17 kPa CO2 were reached for all treatments. UV-C decreased microbial counts just after illumination. After 11 days at 5 °C, mesophilic, psycrophilic and enterobacteria populations were significantly lower in UV-C treated watermelon. Slight changes in CIE colour parameters were observed. According to sensory quality attributes, control and low UV-C treated cubes (1.6 and 2.8 kJ m?2) can be stored for up to 11 days at 5 °C while the maximum shelf-life of moderate to high UV-C treated fruit was 8 days at 5 °C. Control cubes showed a 16% decrease in lycopene content after 11 days at 5 °C similar to that found for the high UV-C treatment. However low UV-C treated watermelon cubes preserved their initial lycopene content (2.8 kJ m?2) or it was slightly decreased (1.6 kJ m?2). UV-C radiation did not significantly affect the vitamin C content while catalase activity and total polyphenols content considerably declined throughout the storage period. However, total antioxidant capacity markedly increased, independently of UV-C doses. As a main conclusion, UV-C radiation can be considered a promising tool for keeping overall quality of fresh-cut watermelon.  相似文献

Freshly cut slices of apple (Malus x domestica Borkh cv. Granny Smith) were fumigated with nitric oxide (NO) gas at concentrations between 1 and 500 μl l−1 in air at 20 °C for up to 6 h followed by storage at 0, 5, 10 and 20 °C in air. Exposure to nitric oxide delayed the onset of browning on the apple surface with the most effective treatment being fumigation with 10 μl l−1 NO for 1 h. While nitric oxide inhibited browning in slices held at all temperatures, it was relatively more effective as the storage temperature was reduced with the extension in postharvest life over the respective untreated slices increasing from about 40% at 20 °C to about 70% at 0 °C. In a smaller study on ‘Royal Gala’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Sundowner’, ‘Fuji’ and ‘Red Delicious’ slices stored at 10 °C, 10 μl l−1 NO for 1 h was found to be effective in inhibiting surface browning in all cultivars.  相似文献

Experiments were carried out to study the effects of N fertilizer rates and timing of application on the yield and grain quality of a rainfed emmer crop (Triticum dicoccum Shübler) under Mediterranean conditions. The following parameters were analyzed: hulled and net grain yield, hulled index, spikes m?2, spikelets per spike, kernels m?2, thousand-kernel weight, biomass, plant height, lodging, grain protein and ash content. In the first experiment, different N rates (30, 60 and 90 kg N ha?1 plus a control not fertilized) were split at three phenological stages (seeding 20%, tillering 40% and stem elongation 40%). In the second experiment, three N doses (30, 60 and 90 kg N ha?1) were applied to three crop stages (seeding, tillering and stem elongation). In the third experiment, the rate of 90 kg N ha?1 was distributed in different amounts (90-0-0, 0-90-0, 0-0-90, 45-45-0, 45-0-45, 0-45-45, 30-30-30) at the three mentioned crop stages. Increasing N rates resulted in higher hulled and net grain yield, as well as protein content. Fertilization (from 60 to 90 kg N ha?1) applied to tillering maximized hulled and net grain yield. Fertilization (90 kg N ha?1) applied to stem elongation gave the highest grain protein content (%) while splitting application (30 kg N ha?1 each) at three phenological stages maximized protein yield per hectare. Application of half or one-third of 90 kg N ha?1 to stem elongation improved grain protein content in comparison with applications at sowing, or at both sowing and tillering. The main factor determining higher yields with increasing N rates in this emmer crop was the number of kernels m?2. None of the yield components accounted for differences in grain yield when timing and splitting application were varied.  相似文献

The effects of radiation and temperature during the seed set period (SSP) on pod number per square metre (PN m−2) and seed number per square metre (SN m−2) and those of temperature during grain filling on unit seed weight (USW, milligram per seed) of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) were examined in experiments involving irrigated crops of three or more cultivars of contrasting maturity sown on two or more dates per year from 1996 to 1998 at Buenos Aires, Argentina. The duration of the seed-setting phase was estimated from records of the progress of flowering on the main stem and an estimate (obtained using an optimisation procedure) of the thermal time from flowering at which the uppermost reproductive node reached the final stage of seed abortion (FSSA). The FSSA at a particular node was assumed to be achieved 200 °C day (Tb=4 °C) after flowering at the same node. The grain-filling phase was assumed to run from the achievement of FSSA at the first reproductive node through to 200 °C day (Tb=0 °C) after the date of achievement of the FSSA by the second flowering node.The treatments (cultivar, sowing date, year) produced important ranges of above-ground biomass (AGB) at maturity (271–782 g m−2), seed yield (SY, 119–331 g m−2), SN (1062–3698 seeds m−2) and USW (67–150 mg seed−1). Seed yield was strongly correlated with SN, and there was full compensation between SN and USW in large-seeded cultivars in the high SN range, but not at lower values of SN or in small-seeded cultivars. Both PN (r=0.83) and SN (r=0.87, P<0.0005) were strongly correlated with the mean daily value of the photothermal quotient (PQ=incident radiation/(mean temperature − base temperature)) for the seed-setting phase. Large- and small-seeded cultivars had PN/PQ and SN/PQ relationships with slopes which did not differ among categories but with significantly different intercepts. When the effects of low temperatures during flowering and early grain growth were allowed for, outliers on the PN/PQ and SN/PQ relationships for unstressed crops fell within the confidence limits of the respective linear regressions. Unit seed weight showed a negative response to mean temperature during the grain-filling phase in large- and small-seeded cultivars. We conclude that the relationships established in these experiments, taken together with previous work by other authors, constitute a robust basis for modelling the yield of unstressed field pea crops.  相似文献

The curative antifungal activity of postharvest sodium methylparaben (SMP) treatments against citrus green (GM) and blue (BM) molds was characterized on different citrus species and cultivars artificially inoculated with Penicillium digitatum or Penicillium italicum and incubated at 20 °C and 90% RH for 7 d or stored at 5 °C and 90% RH for 8 weeks plus 7 d of shelf-life at 20 °C. Effective concentrations were selected in in vivo primary screenings with ‘Valencia’ oranges. SMP at 200 mM was tested at 20, 50 or 62 °C for 30, 60 or 150 s in small-scale trials to determine the best dip treatment conditions. Dips of 200 mM SMP at 20 °C for 60 s were selected and applied alone or in combination with 25 μL L−1 of the conventional fungicide imazalil (SMP + IMZ 25). Imazalil at the very low concentrations of 25 (IMZ 25) or 50 μL L−1 (IMZ 50) were also tested. Effectiveness of SMP alone at 20 °C for 60 s was significantly higher on oranges (cvs. ‘Valencia’ and ‘Lanelate’) than on mandarins (cvs. ‘Clemenules’, ‘Nadorcott’ and ‘Ortanique’), with GM and BM incidence reductions of up to 88% after 7 d at 20 °C. SMP was compatible with IMZ 25 and consistently improved its performance, irrespective of citrus cultivars and storage conditions. All treatments were less effective on ‘Clemenules’ mandarins. On ‘Valencia’ oranges stored for 8 weeks at 5 °C and 7 d at 20 °C, the combined treatment was significantly more effective than the single treatments (reductions of GM and BM incidence of about 50–60% and 90–95%, respectively). In additional tests, 200 mM SMP dips at 20 °C for 60 s did not prevent GM on ‘Valencia’ oranges wounded, treated, inoculated with P. digitatum 24 h later, and incubated at 20 °C for 7 d. In contrast, the treatments IMZ 25 and SMP + IMZ 25 showed significant preventive activity. It can be concluded from these results that SMP aqueous solutions, especially applied at room temperature, might be an interesting nonpolluting control alternative to be included in citrus postharvest disease control programs in the future.  相似文献

Irrigated crops of ‘Grasslands Kaituna’ lucerne were grown for 5 years in a temperate climate at Lincoln University, Canterbury, New Zealand (43°38′S, 172°28′E). From these the response of the components of leaf area index (LAI) to environmental factors was determined. A broken stick temperature threshold with a base temperature (Tb) of 1 °C at air temperatures (Ta) <15 °C and a Tb = 5 °C for Ta  15 was required to accumulate thermal time (Tt). Using this, the appearance of nodes on the main-stem (phyllochron) was constant in Tt within a re-growth cycle (30–42 days). The phyllochron was 37 ± 7 °Cd but declined from 60 to 37 °Cd as photoperiod decreased from 15.7 to 11.4 h. Branching began at the appearance of the fifth main-stem node with 2.5 secondary nodes produced per main-stem node in spring re-growth cycles but only 1.7 produced in summer. Leaf senescence increased from 0.3 to 1.08 leaves per main-stem node after the appearance of the ninth node. Spring re-growth cycles had a mean individual leaf area of 170 mm2 compared with 400 mm2 for summer re-growth cycles. These results demonstrate systematic variation in LAI components and suggest they need to be considered separately in response to environmental factors to provide a quantitative framework for crop simulation analyses of lucerne canopy development.  相似文献

Wooden bin-stored ‘Bartlett’ pears (Pyrus communis L.) were hydrocooled (HC) or forced-air cooled (FAC) and immediately treated or not with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) for 24 h. 1-MCP gas concentrations used were 0, 0.3 or 0.6 μL L?1 (called 0, 0.3 and 0.6, respectively). Fruit were subsequently kept at 20 °C for 20 d or stored at ?0.5 °C and 95% RH for 60, 90, 120 or 150 d. After cold storage, fruit were kept at 20 °C for up to 16 d for further ripening. In another experiment, pears stored in wooden bins (W) or plastic bins (P) were all hydrocooled, treated or not with 0.5 μL L?1 1-MCP (called 0.5 and 0, respectively), stored at ?0.5 °C and 95% RH for 0, 30, 60, 90 or 120 d, and transferred to 20 °C for further ripening. In FAC pears, increasing 1-MCP concentrations usually resulted in delayed increases in ethylene production and lower ethylene production rates, as well as delayed softening. In contrast, HC-0.3 pear firmness did not differ from that of HC-0 fruit after cold storage. Generally, HC-0.3 pears displayed higher ethylene production and lower firmness values than FAC-0.3 pears after a 7-d exposure to 20 °C, regardless the length of cold storage. FAC-0.6 pears always showed lower ethylene production rates and higher flesh firmness values than HC-0.6 fruit. Soluble solids concentration was not consistently affected by 1-MCP. FAC-0.3 and HC-0.6 fruit showed higher titratable acidity values than HC-0 fruit after 0, 60, 120 and 150 d of cold storage plus 7 d at 20 °C. Effectiveness of 1-MCP treatments on HC pears was influenced by the bin material; P-0.5 pears were firmer than W-0.5 pears after 7 d at 20 °C, regardless the length of the cold storage. HC-0.5 fruit exposed to ?0.5 °C for 90 d reached eating quality (firmness ≤23 N) by day 7 if placed in W, and by day 21 when stored in P. Results and previous evidence suggest that wet wooden bin material may represent a major though unpredictable source of 1-MCP sorption that could bind a significant percentage of the 1-MCP applied. When used at relatively low doses 1-MCP partial removal by wet wooden bins can compromise the application effectiveness for controlling ethylene action.  相似文献

Kenaf is a warm-season species that recently has been proved to be a good source of biomass for cellulose pulp for the paper industry in Mediterranean countries, where the use of hemp is problematic for legal reasons. A two-year research program aiming at studying the effects of different water regimes and nitrogen fertilization levels, upon plant growth, leaf area index, biomass accumulation, water and radiation use efficiency, was carried out on kenaf under a typically semi-arid Mediterranean climate of South Italy. Tainung 2, four different water regimes (I0 = no irrigation, I25, I50 and I100 = 25, 50 and 100% ETc restoration, respectively) and three nitrogen levels (N0 = no nitrogen, N75 and N150 = 75 and 150 kg ha−1 of N, respectively) were studied. The amount of water applied strongly affected plant growth (in terms of LAI, plant height and biomass) and final total and stem dry yield, which significantly increased from I0 to I100. Nitrogen did not exert any beneficial effect upon dry yield. Radiation Use Efficiency (RUE), calculated in the second year only, was the highest (1.95 g DM MJ−1) in fully irrigated treatment (I100) and the lowest (0.86 g DM MJ−1) in the dry control.Water use efficiency (WUE) was rather similar among water regimes, whilst irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) progressively increased with the decrease of total volume of water distributed to the crop by irrigation, from 3.47 to 12.45 kg m−3 in 2004 and from 4.27 to 7.72 kg m−3 in 2005. The results obtained from this research demonstrate that in semi-arid areas of South Italy, irrigation at a reduced rate (50% ETc restoration) may be advantageous, since it allowed a 42–45% irrigation water saving, when compared to the fully irrigation treatment, against a 23% (in 2004) and 36% (in 2005) yield reduction, and a still good efficiency (near that potential) in transforming the solar radiation in dry biomass was maintained (RUE = 1.76 g DM MJ−1, against 1.95 g DM MJ−1 in fully irrigated treatment).  相似文献

We investigated the effects of nitric oxide (NO) fumigation on fruit ripening, chilling injury, and quality of Japanese plums cv. ‘Amber Jewel’. Commercially mature fruit were fumigated with 0, 5, 10, and 20 μL L−1 NO gas at 20 °C for 2 h. Post-fumigation, fruit were either allowed to ripen at 21 ± 1 °C or were stored at 0 °C for 5, 6, and 7 weeks followed by ripening for 5 d at 21 ± 1 °C. NO-fumigation, irrespective of concentration applied, significantly (P  0.5) suppressed respiration and ethylene production rates during ripening at 21 ± 1 °C. At 21 ± 1 °C, the delay in ripening caused by NO-fumigation was evident from the restricted skin colour changes and retarded softening in fumigated fruit. NO treatments (10 and 20 μL L−1) delayed the decrease in titratable acidity (TA) without a significant (P  0.5) effect on soluble solids concentration (SSC) during ripening. During 5, 6, and 7 weeks of storage at 0 °C, NO-fumigation was effective towards restricting changes in the ripening related parameters, skin colour, firmness, and TA. The individual sugar (fructose, glucose, sucrose, and sorbitol) profiles of NO-fumigated fruit were significantly different from those of non-fumigated fruit after cold storage and ripening at 21 ± 1 °C. CI symptoms, manifest in the form of flesh browning and translucency, were significantly lower in NO-fumigated fruit than in non-fumigated fruit after 5, 6, and 7 weeks storage followed by ripening for 5 d at 21 ± 1 °C. NO-fumigation was effective in reducing decay incidence in plums during ripening without storage and after cold storage at 0 °C for 5, 6, and 7 weeks. In conclusion, the postharvest exposure of ‘Amber Jewel’ plums to NO gas (10 μL L−1) delayed ripening by 3–4 d at 21 ± 1 °C, and also alleviated chilling injury symptoms during cold storage at 0 °C for 6 weeks.  相似文献

In this study, we report efficiencies of light capture and biomass yield of festulolium and tall fescue cultivated on a riparian fen in Denmark under different harvesting managements. Green biomass targeted for biogas production was harvested either as two cuts (2C) or three cuts (3C) in a year. Three different timings of the first cut in the 2C systems were included as early (2C-early), middle (2C-mid) and late (2C-late) cuts corresponding to pre-heading, inflorescence emergence and flowering stages, respectively. The fraction of intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (fPAR) was derived from the canopy reflectance measured on 61 dates throughout a year, and cumulative interception of PAR (IPAR) and radiation use efficiency (RUE) was calculated. The dynamics of fPAR and biomass accumulations was similar for both crops before the first cuts in all managements. Festulolium fPAR in 2C-early and 2C-mid managements declined faster than in 2C-late and 3C managements in the second growth period and thus growing period IPAR of 2C-early and 2C-mid declined by 8% as compared to 3C management where IPAR was 925 MJ m−2. Annual festulolium dry matter (DM) yield in 2C-early and 2C-mid managements (average 14.1 Mg DM ha−1) decreased by 22% compared to 3C management (18.2 Mg DM ha−1). The highest and the lowest RUE of festulolium were observed in 3C and 2C-mid managements as 1.97 and 1.59 g MJ−1, respectively. For tall fescue fPAR declined rather slowly in the second growing period in all 2C managements, which contributed to similar IPAR (908–919 MJ m−2), total biomass yield (16.4–18.8 Mg DM ha−1 yr−1) and RUE (1.80–2.07 g MJ−1) for all managements. Whereas both crops were highly productive under both 3C management and 2C management with first harvest after flowering (i.e., 2C-late), the 2C-late strategy is recommended as the least intensive of the two management systems.  相似文献

After three months storage at 0.5 °C one quarter of a lot of ‘Anjou’ pears (Pyrus communis L.) were treated with 1 μL L?1 of 1-methylcyclopropane (1-MCP) for 8 h at 20 °C and three quarters of the fruit were left untreated at 20 °C for the same time. Treated and untreated pears were then sliced, dipped in a commercial anti-browning solution and packaged in modified atmospheric bags. Packages, containing slices from 1-MCP treated fruit, were labelled as MCP1. Slices from two thirds of the untreated fruit had one of two secondary treatments applied: (1) multi-functional co-release sachets added to the package at the time of sealing (NT), or (2) an injection of 1-MCP to sealed packages to achieve a final concentration of 1 μL L?1 (MCP2). The last third of the slices from the untreated lot of pears were sealed into packages with no further treatment (CK). The packages were kept at 5 °C. In-package ethylene concentrations were significantly lower for the NT treated slices. NT also significantly delayed and reduced net oxygen consumption in the package headspace compared with other treatments. The NT treatment also reduced incidence of browning induced by enzymes of microbial origin, termed secondary browning (SB), and better maintained the measured juiciness of slices. In contrast, the CK, MCP1 and MCP2 treatments showed a more rapid appearance and severity of SB. Slices in packages treated with NT retained higher tissue levels of butyl, hexyl and pentyl acetate, 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one, butanol and hexanol during storage than any of the other three treatments.  相似文献

The risk of undesirable by-products from chlorine disinfection in fresh-cut industries, together with its limited efficacy, has led to a search for alternative agents. The aim of this study was to test several alternative putative antimicrobial substances to reduce Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp. and Listeria spp. populations on fresh-cut apple. Carvacrol, vanillin, peroxyacetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, N-acetyl-l-cysteine and Citrox were selected for their results in in vitro assays against E. coli O157:H7 and Listeria spp., to be tested on fresh-cut apple plugs. Apple flesh was inoculated by dipping in a suspension of a mix of the studied pathogens at 106 cfu mL?1, and then treated with the antimicrobial substances. All treatments were compared to deionized water and a standard sodium hypochlorite treatment (SH, 100 mg L?1, pH 6.5). Pathogen population on apple plugs was monitored for up to 6 days at 10 °C. Bacterial reductions obtained by peroxyacetic acid (80 and 120 mg L?1), vanillin (12 g L?1), hydrogen peroxide (5, 10, 20 mL L?1) and N-acetyl-l-cysteine (5 and 10 g L?1) were similar or higher than reduction obtained by SH. In addition, bacterial populations were maintained at low levels throughout storage. No cells of any of the pathogens were detected in the peroxyacetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, Citrox and SH washing solutions after apple treatment. Peroxyacetic acid, hydrogen peroxide and N-acetyl-l-cysteine could be potential disinfectants for the fresh-cut industry as an alternative to chlorine disinfection. However, their effect on sensory quality and effectiveness under commercial processing conditions should be evaluated.  相似文献

Flower opening in Iris (Iris x hollandica) depends on elongation of the pedicel + ovary. This elongation lifts the bud above the point where the sheath leaves no longer mechanically inhibit lateral tepal movement. We here report on the effects on flower opening of storage at various temperatures, of holding the flowers dry rather than in water, and of a 12 h light/dark cycle instead of darkness, in cv. Blue Magic. During 3 d of storage in darkness at 11 °C or 6 °C the flowers placed in water opened. Flowers stored at 3.0 °C did not open during the storage period but did so during subsequent vase life at 20 °C. Flowers stored in water at 0.5 °C remained closed, even during subsequent vase life at 20 °C. None of the flowers that were stored dry for 3 d at 15 °C, 11 °C, 6 °C, 3 °C or 0.5 °C opened during vase life. Compared to flowers placed in continuous darkness, a rhythm of 12 h light and 12 h darkness inhibited opening during a 3 d storage period at 20 °C. It is concluded that cut Iris flowers (a) can be stored in water at 3 °C for more than a week, but cannot be stored for 3 d or more in water at 15 °C, 11 °C, 6 °C or 0.5 °C, and (b) cannot be stored dry for long (under the present conditions 3 d or longer) at any of these temperatures. Iris flowers were found to be chilling-sensitive, although only at temperatures of about 0.5 °C.  相似文献
