Signs of toxicity and the levels of nutrients required to produce them are discussed for energy, calcium, and protein. Behavioral aspects of nutrition in weaning, obesity, and dietary changes are characterized. This article suggests that there is a high probability of connections between emotional and physical health in animals. Many avian veterinarians are putting these ideas into practice. Recently, several veterinary schools have invited speakers to address their students about these ideas, suggesting a positive change in attitude (Irene Pepperburg, personal communication, 2000). There has been substantial progress in the avian veterinary community's attitude towards the psychological health of these exceptionally intelligent animals. In fact, over the last 5 years, there has been a substantial increase in avian medicine's interest in the work lay parrot behaviorists are doing regarding the psychology of these fascinating birds. Documentation of the psittacine paranasal sinuses has been limited. To provide more published detail, spiral computed tomography (CT) was used to scan the cephalic and cervical region from cadavers of 10 psittacine birds (Ara ararauna, Ara chloroptera, Ara macao, and Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus). Skeletal studies, histologic examinations, and evaluation of deep-frozen sections and anatomic preparations confirmed the results of the CT scans. New morphologic details of the paranasal sinus and some compartments were discovered. The paranasal sinuses of these macaws consist of two unpaired rostral compartments, followed caudally by eight paired compartments. Histologic examinations revealed that the walls of the paranasal sinuses consist of flat or cubic monolayer epithelium with underlying connective tissue. The described method of CT examination of these macaws, especially the positioning, scan orientation and parameters, and documentation of the normal paranasal sinus, provides a basis for future clinical use of CT. 相似文献

During the past 2 decades, the potential for excessive exposure of pet birds to zinc has become a concern for many pet bird owners. Ideally, avian zinc toxicosis is diagnosed on the basis of history of exposure to zinc, radiographic evidence of ingested metal, occurrence of melena, detection of an elevated plasma zinc concentration, and response to treatment. However, most pet birds suspected of having zinc toxicosis present with vague signs and lack of radiographic evidence; therefore, the diagnosis relies on the presence of an elevated plasma zinc concentration. A question was, is there a significant diurnal variation in the zinc concentration in psittacine birds and could this be clinically relevant? Because studies in other species have shown that zinc is not the only element that shows a diurnal variation, the authors examined 13 other plasma elements including arsenic, cadmium, calcium, cobalt, copper, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, potassium, selenium, and total phosphorus. Fifteen adult psittacine birds housed in the same aviary were used in this study. Three blood samples, separated by 4 hours, were taken from the right jugular vein in each bird. All elements were measured in plasma. Zinc, copper, and molybdenum revealed diurnal fluctuations. The results of this study suggest that interpretation of clinical samples may be more complicated than previously believed. Furthermore, on the basis of the results of this study, it is possible that some avian reference ranges may need to be reexamined. 相似文献

Two cases of mycobacteriosis in individual psittacine birds from two separate small aviaries are described. The lesions consisted of infiltration of organs with large macrophages, containing numerous acidfast organisms. There was no caseation or encapsulation of the lesions. No microbiological studies were conducted as mycobacteriosis was not suspected at the time of necropsy. 相似文献

Psittacine inclusion body hepatitis (also known as Pacheco's parrot disease) was believed to be responsible for fatal necrotizing hepatitis and splenitis in a variety of psittacine birds from a private aviary. Splenic cells and degenerative hepatocytes around the outer zone of necrotic areas had margination of nuclear material and large intranuclear inclusion bodies. Clinical signs consisted of weakness, anorexia, vomiting, loose feces, and slight ruffling of feathers. The source of the infection was undetermined, but could have been associated with 3 Patagonian conures within the aviary. Patagonian conures are well-recognized as clinically normal carriers. The outbreak was limited by strict quarantine and disinfection of the aviary for 14 days. 相似文献

This paper concerns a disease affecting a group of African grey parrots, which involves intranuclear inclusion bodies composed of filamentous material. The disease was characterized by either sudden death or death within 2–3 days from onset of non-specific symptoms. At necropsy, gross lesions included enlarged liver, mild hepatic congestion and focal necrosis. Samples from five birds were fixed in 10% formol and routinely processed for light and electron microscopy. In four birds, numerous hepatocytes displayed an enlarged nucleus, with peripheral margination of chromatin; the nucleus was partially or wholly filled by a basophilic inclusion body. In the remaining bird, inclusion bodies were acidophilic and completely filled the nucleus; nuclear enlargement was less evident than in the other birds. At ultrastructural examination, and in both types of IIB, nuclei contained looped filaments but no evidence of viral structures. However, virion-like structures were observed in the cytoplasm of some hepatocytes. 相似文献

This new class of therapeutics offers a more targeted, and therefore precise, approach to the treatment of cancer. Psittacine proventricular dilatation syndrome (macaw wasting disease) is a fatal disease of the gastrointestinal tract and, sometimes, the CNS. The disease most often affects macaws and is thought to be of viral origin. An Umbrella cockatoo was referred with signs of neurologic dysfunction. Other unusual findings included flaccid crop, distended duodenum, and acute weight loss. Because treatment has not been reported to be effective, the affected cockatoo was euthanatized to limit spread of the disease. 相似文献
