An indoor‐only, 5‐year‐old, spayed female domestic shorthair cat presented for an ophthalmic examination of the left eye. An intraocular tumor with secondary glaucoma and blindness was diagnosed; the globe was enucleated and sent for histopathological examination. Gross examination revealed a solid white mass filling the entire vitreous space and replacing the iris and ciliary body. The lens and retina appeared to be similarly replaced by the neoplasm. Histological examination revealed a complete loss of the internal ocular structures, with a ruptured capsule as the only remnant of the lens within an extensive malignant mesenchymal neoplastic cell proliferation. The cells were polygonal, with well‐defined cytoplasmic borders and abundant weakly basophilic cytoplasm, embedded within the islands of chondroid matrix. No neoplastic invasion of the sclera was apparent. The animal died 6 months after the enucleation due to respiratory distress. Gross examination revealed numerous firm, white to tan nodular masses with smooth to mildly irregular surfaces dispersed throughout the parietal pleura, thoracic surface of the diaphragm, tracheobronchial and mediastinal lymph nodes, pericardium, and lungs. On cross‐section, the neoplastic nodules were solid and variably translucent, resembling hyaline cartilage. Histologically, these nodules were similar to the neoplasm identified earlier in the left globe. Metastasis of post‐traumatic ocular chondrosarcoma has not yet been described in cats. This is therefore believed to be the first report of metastases of this type of neoplasm in cats. This case adds to the limited set of data on the outcome of this type of tumor.  相似文献

Sudden unilateral blindness occurred in a 7-year-old grey gelding Quarterhorse. Ophthalmoscopy revealed a pigmented mass arising from the nasal ciliary body of the right eye and extending around the posterior surface of the lens, and there were pigmented particles in the vitreous. Examination of the enucleated globe showed a circumscribed, black, dense and symmetrically ovoid mass with sessile attachment to the nasal ciliary region and extension to posterior lens capsule, vitreous and along the vitreal face of the detached retina to the optic papilla. The mass was composed of heavily pigmented, plump, polyhedral cells that invaded the vitreous and the inner limiting membrane of peripapillary retina and optic papilla. It was considered to be a primary, malignant, intraocular melanoma arising from a large uveal nevus.  相似文献

Severe bilateral cataract was found in a 7 year-old naïve female cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) 3 months before necropsy. During macroscopic examination, severe opacity and thinning of the lens were observed in both eyes. Histopathology revealed that the lens nuclei and majority of cortex lens fibers had disappeared and become excavated, while the lens fibers in the subcapsular area were swollen and distorted. Other observations included atrophy and vacuolation in the lens epithelial cells and proliferation of spindle cells and collagen fiber beneath the anterior capsule of the right eye. Immunohistochemical staining of these spindle cells revealed the presence of vimentin, cytokeratin and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), which were considered to be derived from lens epithelial cells. This is a rare case of spontaneous, bilateral, hypermature cataract in a cynomolgus monkey.  相似文献

This case report describes a case of spontaneous pancreatic islet cell carcinoma with vascular invasion in a 110-week-old male F344 rat. Histologically, a pancreatic nodule consisting of tumor cells and many blood-rich vessels, and covered with a fibrous capsule showed local invasion in the capsule and adjacent acinar tissues, encircling a large duct-like structure (DS). The tumor was composed of well-differentiated tumor cells resembling normal pancreatic islet cells, which had small round nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures were rare. Immunohistochemistry revealed that the tumor cells were positive for insulin. Although endothelial cells were not detected, the DS wall showed cells positive for α-smooth muscle actin and elastic fibers, suggesting that the DS is the pancreatic artery. This is a rare case of islet cell carcinoma consisting of well-differentiated tumor cells with invasion of the pancreatic artery in a rat.  相似文献

Ocular manifestations of a metastatic pulmonary adenocarcinoma in a cat   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A primary pulmonary bronchogenic adenocarcinoma originating from an intramediastinal accessory lung was diagnosed in a 14.5-year-old cat. The cat had been admitted because of a cloudy right eye. Physical examination revealed a thin cat with severe iritis, aqueous flare, and a fibrin clot in the anterior chamber of the right eye. Right fundic examination revealed bullous retinal detachment superior to the optic disc. Euthanasia and necropsy were requested when FeLV test results were positive. Metastatic neoplastic cells similar to those of the primary tumor were detected in the choroid, ciliary body, and ciliary processes of the right eye. Ciliary and iridic stromal necrosis attributable to neoplastic embolization of uveal vessels had led to severe uveitis. Foci of metastasis were also in the heart, kidney, and cerebral meninges.  相似文献

A seven-month-old, male Shih Tzu dog weighing 3.7 kg had an immature cataract in its left eye. A biomicroscopic examination revealed numerous vacuolations in the posterior cortices with nucleus cataracts, covered by an intact anterior lens capsule. The changes observed by ocular sonographic examination (OSG) of the left eye were hyperechoic, and a funnel-cone shape was observed posteriorly with cortex hyperechogenicity in the lens. The left eye was diagnosed as having a posterior lenticonus with congenital cataract. Phacoemulsification was performed on the left eye as diagnostic treatment of the posterior lenticonus and cataract. Postoperative OSG on the left eye revealed a V-shaped linear echo that was indicative of a posterior capsule of the lens. Moreover, it was confirmed that hyperechoic cataract material inside the lens had disappeared.  相似文献

A 3-year-old female neutered Staffordshire Bull Terrier presented with a mixed germ cell tumor involving the base of the iris and the ciliary body of the right eye. The tumor mass was composed primarily of packeted vacuolated, polygonal (hepatoid) cells and small round cells; epithelial cells lining tubuloacinar structures were a less prominent component. The hepatoid and round cells stained positively for alpha-fetoprotein and cytokeratin. The epithelial cells stained positively for cytokeratin only, and some contained cytoplasmic mucin droplets. The polygonal cells were interpreted as a hepatoid variant of yolk sac tumor, and the epithelial cells were considered a teratomatous component. Trabeculae of bone were observed within the mass and may have been metaplastic or a teratomatous element. Extragonadal germ cell tumors are rare in dogs and have previously been reported only in the suprasellar region. This is the first report of this tumor type in the eye of a nonhuman species.  相似文献

A 3‐year‐old Paint gelding was presented for sudden onset of cataract affecting the right eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed subtle to mild microphthalmia and a mature cataract affecting the right globe. The right eye was treated with an antibiotic‐corticosteroid ophthalmic ointment and phacofragmentation was recommended. On re‐examination 5 months later, resorption of the cortex of the right lens and a morgagnian cataract were evident. The nucleus was positioned ventronasally in the lens capsule. The right eye had light perception, and a menace response was present. Examination of the right fundus via binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy was not possible. Ophthalmic ultrasonography revealed that the right globe was 4 mm shorter in axial length when compared with the left globe. There was a marked reduction in the size of the right lens vs. the left lens, and the presence of a moderate amount of hyperechoic debris was identified within the vitreal compartment of the right globe. Phacofragmentation, irrigation and aspiration of the morgagnian cataract and an anterior vitrectomy were performed. On postoperative examination, the eye was comfortable and a menace response was present. The horse regained useful vision and continues to have a comfortable, visual eye 7 months postoperatively.  相似文献

Transabdominal ultrasonography was performed to visualize the development of intraocular structures of both eyes of four different fetuses in each of two pregnant beagles. Postnatally the development of both eyes of 11 pups was visualized with ultrasonography. Furthermore, biometric measurements of the length of the eye, the depth of cornea, the anterior chamber, the lens (anteroposterior depth and equatorial diameter), and the vitreous body of the fetuses and pups were obtained when these structures could be identified with ultrasonography. In all fetuses the eyes with lens, vitreous body, hyaloid artery, and scleroretinal rim could be clearly identified from day 37 of pregnancy. Postnatally also the cornea, anterior chamber, iris, ciliary body, and optic disc were visible. Biometric measurements revealed, both pre- and postnatally, a continuous growth of the depth of the eye, anterior chamber, lens (anteroposterior depth and equatorial diameter), and vitreous body.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the morphologic changes in the anterior lens capsule and lens epithelium of canine eyes with cataracts. SAMPLE POPULATION: Anterior lens capsules from the eyes of 25 dogs with cataracts and from an additional 10 canine globes with lenses subjectively assessed to be normal. PROCEDURE: Thickness of each anterior lens capsule was measured by use of a digital microscopic camera and imaging software. All 25 capsules from eyes with cataracts were submitted for light microscopy; 4 were also submitted for electron microscopy. RESULTS: Thickness of the anterior lens capsule increased with age for the normal lenses and the lenses with cataracts; the change with age was similar for both groups. Light microscopy revealed fibrous metaplasia of lens epithelial cells in 7 of 25 anterior lens capsules with focal thickenings of the posterior aspect of the capsule. Electron microscopy revealed deposition of collagen and basement membrane-like material by fibroblast-like cells. CONCLUSIONS: Results indicate that thickness of the anterior lens capsule in dogs increases with age and that this increase in thickness is not significantly different between normal lenses and lenses with cataracts. In addition, epithelial cells from lenses with cataracts may undergo metaplasia to form plaques composed of fibrous tissue and ectopic basement membrane produced by epithelial cells.  相似文献

Blue discoloration of the iris was found in the left eye of a male laboratory Beagle dog, which had a normal tricolor coat and clinically showed no visual impairment. Ophthalmoscopically, the affected eye revealed red-colored tigroid fundus, in which no tapetum was present. The retinal vasculature and the optic disc showed no noticeable changes. Histopathologically, in the left eye melanocytes had extremely few melanin granules in the anterior segment, including the anterior border layer, in the stroma and sphincter muscle of the iris and in the stroma of the ciliary body and choroid. However, the posterior pigment epithelium of the iris, the pigment epithelium of the ciliary body and the retinal pigment epithelium showed normal pigmentation. The tapetal elements were completely absent. Number and distribution of the S-100 protein-positive melanocytes with or without melanin granules in the iris, ciliary body and choroid of the left eye were similar to those of the normal right eye. Ultrastructurally, melanocytes in the anterior segment of the affected iris possessed no or few melanosomes which were incompletely melanized. In the right eye, no abnormal features were observed. Based on these results, the present case was diagnosed as unilateral ocular subalbinism with tapetal aplasia in a Beagle dog.  相似文献

Aquaporins (AQPs) function as water channels in many types of cells involved in fluid transport. More than 10 isoforms have been identified, and these are differentially expressed in many types of mammalian cells in the body. Six AQPs (AQP0, AQP1, AQP3, AQP4, AQP5, and AQP9) have been identified in the eyes of humans and/or rodents. The unique permeability characteristics and distribution of AQPs indicate their diverse roles in the regulation of water homeostasis in the eye. The aim of this study was to investigate the localisation of AQPs in normal canine eyes, with AQP0 protein expressed in the crystalline lens and retina. Although AQP1 mRNA was detected in various areas of the canine eye, its protein expression was limited to the cornea, iris and ciliary body. AQP4 was identified in the iris, retina and optic nerve. AQP3 and AQP5 were found in the cornea and conjunctiva, and their expression was particularly high in the limbus. AQP3 and AQP5 were present in the nictitating membrane indicating that they play a role in water transport within the membrane. The observations suggested that several subtypes of the AQP family are involved in the regulation of water homeostasis in the canine eye.  相似文献

CASE DESCRIPTION: A great horned owl of estimated age < 1 year that was captured by wildlife rehabilitators was evaluated because of suspected cataracts. CLINICAL FINDINGS: Nuclear and incomplete cortical cataracts were evident in both eyes. Ocular ultrasonography revealed no evidence of retinal detachment, and electroretinography revealed normal retinal function. TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: For visual rehabilitation, cataract surgery was planned and intraocular lens design was determined on the basis of values obtained from the schematic eye, which is a mathematical model representing a normal eye for a species. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens placement were performed in both eyes. After surgery, refraction was within -0.75 diopters in the right eye and -0.25 diopters in the left eye. Visual rehabilitation was evident on the basis of improved tracking and feeding behavior, and the owl was eventually released into the wild. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: In raptors with substantial visual compromise, euthanasia or placement in a teaching facility is a typical outcome because release of such a bird is unacceptable. Successful intraocular lens implantation for visual rehabilitation and successful release into the wild are achievable.  相似文献

The recent development of a 20-MHz, high-frequency ultrasound probe has allowed tissue to be visualized at resolutions of 20 to 80 microm, which is similar to a low-power histologic view. This high degree of resolution, however, limits tissue penetration to 5 to 10 mm, which is ideal for examination of the anterior segment of the eye. The detail provided by high-resolution ultrasound readily permits the clinician to distinguish between various anterior segment entities that may appear similar but are treated quite differently, such as anterior uveal tumors, iridociliary cysts, and iris bombé. High-frequency ultrasound is also a valuable aid in creating a surgical plan for treatment of ocular disorders in which the cornea is opaque, such as feline corneal sequestrum and tumor invasion into the cornea. Other applications of this technology include elucidation of the pathogenesis of glaucoma in veterinary patients and evaluation of regions of the lens that are difficult to examine directly.  相似文献

A 2‐month‐old, 110‐kg Saddlebred filly presented for evaluation of bilateral cataracts. A hypermature cataract in the left eye (OS) and an incipient nuclear cataract in the right eye (OD) were diagnosed. Electroretinography and ocular ultrasound revealed no contraindications for surgical removal of the cataractous lens OS. Phacoemulsification and implantation of a +14 diopter (D) intraocular lens (IOL) OS were performed at 4 months of age without complication, with the exception of a partial iridectomy performed on a small iris section that prolapsed through the corneal incision. Complete ophthalmic examinations, including ocular ultrasound and streak retinoscopy, were performed 1, 2, 6 weeks, 4 months, 1, and 2 years postoperatively. Diffuse corneal edema and a superficial corneal ulcer developed OS during the early postoperative period and resolved without complication. Dyscoria was identified owing to anterior synechia of the dorsomedial iris at the incision site. Two years after surgery, menace response, palpebral reflex, dazzle reflex, and pupillary light reflexes were present in both eyes (OU). The IOL remained centrally positioned within the capsule, with mild anterior tilting of the superior portion of the IOL and mild fibrosis of the lens capsule. The postoperative net refractive error was +0.31 D OS. Based on this report, a +14 D IOL may be the appropriate choice following lens extraction in a foal to achieve refraction near emmetropia at maturity. To our knowledge, this is the first report of phacoemulsification and IOL implantation in a foal with long‐term follow‐up.  相似文献

A firm, tan, well-circumscribed mass that measured 25 × 30 × 35 mm was observed in the thoracic cavity of a 53-week-old male Crl:CD(SD) IGS rat. Histologically, the mass was encapsulated by fibrous tissue and contained fibrovascular septae. Tumor cells were compactly arranged, and most were oval to polygonal in shape with multivacuolated cytoplasm and a centrally located nucleus. In some parts of the tumor, marked cellular atypia and frequent mitoses were evident. Vacuoles in cytoplasm were positive for oil red O. The tumor cells were characterized ultrastructurally by abundant, round to oval mitochondria with transverse closely-packed cristae. Tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1). Several thrombi and hemorrhagic or necrotic foci were also observed within the tumor mass. Vascular invasion of the tumor capsule was observed; however, invasion of surrounding tissues or metastases were not observed. Based on the pathology findings, this case was diagnosed as a malignant hibernoma.  相似文献

ANIMAL STUDIED: A tumor of the left eye with involvement of the brain and kidney was diagnosed in a 4-year-old Neapolitan mastiff. PROCEDURE: The dog presented with acute glaucoma of the left eye. Peripheral corneal vascularization and severe corneal edema obscured examination of deeper structures. Because of concurrent progressive neurologic signs the dog was euthanized and a postmortem examination was performed. The eyes, brain and samples from the lung, heart, liver and kidneys were fixed in 4% neutral buffered formalin and embedded in paraffin wax. Sections were examined by light microscopy including histochemical and immunohistochemical staining. RESULTS: The ocular tumor originated from the ciliary body and was composed of small islets and cords of poorly differentiated, oval to polyhedral cells surrounded by abundant ground substance. Areas with chondroid differentiation were observed. Rosettes were not found. Metastases with the same morphology were present in the brain and in one kidney. CONCLUSION: An intraocular malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma with metastases to the brain and kidney is presented.  相似文献
