Teratology.     
Two categories of collaborative studies are defined. Examples of each type are presented through teratologic studies conducted at the National Institute for Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) in collaboration with an Environmental Protection Agency laboratory and a laboratory in the USSR. These studies and the few pertinent studies found in the literature point out the problem of obtaining repeatability and uniformity of results among tests conducted to determine teratogenic potential. Collaborating laboratories should take more time to select the procedures to be used, to standardize the intended protocol in greater detail, to train participating personnel uniformly, and to test for repeatability by use of a known teratogen, before tackling major interests. Establishment of an archives would improve duplication of published results by making available additional pertinent unpublished information. Finally, possible advantages of collaborative studies for the testing of teratogenic potential are offered.  相似文献

As rice fields are managed for improved rice production, many studies on aquatic organisms in the floodwater have been restricted to agronomically important members such as blue-green algae (BGA) and Azolla , and ecological studies on common aquatic organisms were relatively limited to specific group members. In the present paper, studies on all the aquatic organisms in the floodwater, from protozoa to insects and fishes, were reviewed worldwide from the viewpoint of rice field ecology, paying attention to their populations, seasonal variations, antagonistic relations and biomass, and the effect of field management. Most studies conducted in India and in the Southeast Asian countries dealt with the BGA and green algal populations. In contrast, protozoa and aquatic animals were extensively studied in rice fields in Europe. Japanese studies in the past were intermediate between the previously cited studies. They generally described specific groups depending on the authors' interests, and surprisingly few studies dealt with the community level and prey-predator relationships. Field management such as fertilizer and pesticide application, water management and plowing was found to play a major role in determining the populations of aquatic organisms. Overview of research on aquatic organisms in the floodwater of rice fields suggests several directions for future studies.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To appraise critically the relevance and value of the evidence base to promote and support the duration of breast-feeding, with a specific focus on disadvantaged groups. DESIGN: A systematic review was conducted of intervention studies relevant to enhancing the duration of breast-feeding; topics included public health, public policy, clinical issues, and education, training and practice change. A systematic search was conducted. Eighty studies met the inclusion criteria. Data were systematically extracted and analysed. Full results and recommendations are reported elsewhere. Here a critique of the evidence base--topics, quality and gaps--is reported. RESULTS: Many studies were substantially methodologically flawed, with problems including small sample sizes, inconsistent definitions of breast-feeding and lack of appropriate outcomes. Few were based on relevant theory. Only a small number of included studies (10%) were conducted in the UK. Very few targeted disadvantaged subgroups of women. No studies of policy initiatives or of community interventions were identified. There were virtually no robust studies of interventions to prevent and treat common clinical problems, or of strategies related to women's health issues. Studies of health professional education and practice change were limited. Cost-effectiveness studies were rare. CONCLUSIONS: Policy goals both in the UK and internationally support exclusive breast-feeding until 6 months of age. The evidence base to enable women to continue to breast-feed needs to be strengthened to include robust evaluations of policies and practices related to breast-feeding; a step change is needed in the quality and quantity of research funded.  相似文献

Collaborative studies involving qualitative data are usually conducted under design constraints to fulfill the requirements for quantitative studies. The data from these qualitative studies are often analyzed in a manner that ignores the fact that collaborative studies involve matching (i.e., each laboratory analyzes a portion of each test sample). This report presents some design considerations and analysis procedures for qualitative collaborative studies that take into account that the design involves matching. Suggestions are offered as to the number of laboratories and test samples to use in the minimum collaborative program, and analysis procedures for outier screening are detailed. Method performance is assessed through such indicators as sensitivity, specificity, false positive, and false negative rates. Methods for estimating the error of the performance indicator rates are explained, and procedures are given for estimating false positive and false negative rates for lot defect rates that may occur in practice.  相似文献

A review of literature was conducted to summarize the progress to date in hearing preservation among agricultural workers, including previously published reports and studies in progress. Types of studies reviewed include noise exposure studies, hearing acuity studies, studies focusing on the use of hearing protection, and intervention studies designed to increase hearing protector use. The emissions of SO2 in China correspond at present to 8–10 TgSyr?1. The rapid industrialization has caused a dramatic increase in the emissions in recent years and this increase is likely to continue. This paper describes studies of concentrations and effects of acidifying substances in parts of the Guizhou and the Sichuan provinces where the S-emissions are large. A small catchment about 10 km from Guiyang centre was equipped with instruments for studies of soils, soil water and streamwater chemistry. The molar ratio Al/(Ca+Mg) is > 0.8 in soil water in some places. Two small streams have median pH-values about 4.6 and 5.1. Laboratory studies with selected Chinese soils showed that the anion adsorption was low. These studies gave also important information on soil sensitivity. The studies confirm that acid deposition may affect soils in parts of south-western China, but the sensitivity varies dramatically and there is a strong need for more information.  相似文献

Integrating demographic and genetic approaches in plant conservation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We summarize the problems that populations of formerly common plants may encounter when habitat fragmentation isolates them and reduces population size. Genetic erosion, inbreeding depression, Allee-effects on reproductive success, catastrophes and environmental stochasticity are illustrated with studies on species that have recently become rare in The Netherlands due to habitat fragmentation. These clearly indicate that population viability is negatively affected. We also show that in the recent literature (since 1980), most studies on the conservation of rare plants have addressed population genetic structure and relationships between genetic variation and population size. Though important, these studies are not suitable for assessing the importance of genetics for population viability. In turn, demographic studies can detect changes in vital rates in small populations, but cannot reveal underlying genetic causes. Fitness and demographic studies are also well-represented in the literature, but remarkably few studies have attempted to integrate empirical demographic and genetic studies. We discuss two approaches to fill this very important lacuna in our knowledge. One of these constructs matrix-projection models on the basis of demographic censuses of—if possible—large and viable populations, and combines these with the results of experiments to determine inbreeding effects on demographic transitions and, subsequently, population growth and extinction. The other approach is to demographically monitor experimentally created small and large populations with low and high genetic variation and measure their actual growth rates and probabilities of extinction. We conclude that demography and demographic-genetic experiments should play a central role in plant conservation genetics.  相似文献

More than one-third of the calories consumed by U.S. and European populations contain acrylamide, a substance classified as a "probable human carcinogen" based on laboratory data. Thus, it is a public health concern to evaluate whether intake of acrylamide at levels found in the food supply is an important cancer risk factor. Mean dietary intake of acrylamide in adults averages 0.5 microg/kg of body weight per day, whereas intake is higher among children. Several epidemiological studies examining the relationship between dietary intake of acrylamide and cancers of the colon, rectum, kidney, bladder, and breast have been undertaken. These studies found no association between intake of specific foods containing acrylamide and risk of these cancers. Moreover, there was no relationship between estimated acrylamide intake in the diet and cancer risk. Results of this research are compared with other epidemiological studies, and the findings are examined in the context of data from animal models. The importance of epidemiological studies to establish the public health risk associated with acrylamide in food is discussed, as are the limitations and future directions of such studies.  相似文献

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) came into effect in 1975 to protect certain species of wild fauna and flora against over-exploitation through international trade. Determining which trade is detrimental to the survival of species in the wild can be a major difficulty in the implementation of CITES by national authorities, partly due to limited knowledge and understanding of the species’ biology, management, and the impacts of harvesting. Some of this knowledge could be acquired through targeted scientific research. However, to date there exists no general overview of the current use of biological information in determining detriment in CITES to help scientists identify research priorities. For an international meeting in 2008, over 100 scientists and regulators compiled 60 case studies covering a wide range of CITES-listed taxa, outlining how information on the biology, harvesting and management might be used to determine whether international trade is detrimental. We used these case studies, workshop conclusions, and other published literature, to identify 10 potential research directions for the scientific community which, if addressed, could greatly assist in the making of Non-Detriment Findings. We hope that this will encourage more scientists to study CITES-listed species, and foster more collaboration between research scientists, CITES national authorities, CITES technical committees and local communities. The case studies highlight a general need for advice on how to identify and manage levels of risk involved when assessing possible detriment, and for advice on assessing detriment under complex harvesting scenarios such as when multiple species, or parts of individuals, are harvested. Broadly, they highlight an opportunity for scientists to further develop a body of scientific studies that propose, refine and adapt methods for assessing detrimental trade in CITES-listed taxa. Comparisons within life-form groups indicated the potential for the identification of practical advice that could apply to groups of taxa. The case studies highlighted a widespread need for more information gathering studies of CITES-listed taxa such as the broader impacts of harvesting on populations and ecosystems, and the potential long-term evolutionary impacts. The case studies also highlighted the need for practical advice on how to implement adaptive management programmes and for research into enterprises based on the harvesting of CITES-listed species from the wild.  相似文献

The awareness of the effects of transboundary pollution has increased the necessity to use comparable methods and to initiate joint studies between countries in environmental monitoring. In freshwater fish monitoring a number of different methods have been used, strongly reducing the possibilities to comparative assessments between countries. In 1990, a workshop on freshwater fish sampling was initiated in order to develop and intercalibrate methods used in freshwater fish studies in the Nordic countries. During a three year period, a new type of multi-mesh gillnet to be used for fish monitoring in Norway, Finland and Sweden have been developed. Comparative studies and gillnet-selectivity assessments show that these new multi-mesh gillnets better describe the actual population structure of European perch (Perca fluviatilis), roach (Rutilus rutilus) and Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) than do the traditional gillnet series used in the Nordic countries. Ageing of fish is central in most environmental studies, however, the comparability of analyses performed at different laboratories may be low. Comparative age analyses between the three countries have been performed for a number of fish species. The results of ageing E. perch, whitefish (Coregonus sp.) and roach indicate that differences between laboratories can be reduced by intercalibration. In the future, the workgroup will be focused on a further development of joint methods within studies of freshwater fish and on joint intemordic assessments on species distribution, abundance and life history characteristics in relation to airborne pollutants and liming.  相似文献

We provide an overview of publications from three prominent conservation journals (Biodiversity & Conservation, Biological Conservation and Conservation Biology) published in 2001 (n = 547 papers). We found a wide breadth of studies of different topics from different climates and habitats and across a range of spatial scales. Most studies were quantitative (89%) and used inferential statistics (63%). Research was biased towards vertebrates, forests, relatively pristine landscapes, and towards studies of single species and assemblages rather than communities or ecosystems. Despite assertions in the literature that conservation is synthetic, eclectic and multi-disciplinary, few studies were truly cross-disciplinary (13%). In addition, few studies investigated the loss of native vegetation (2%), or specifically studied introduced (4%) or non-threatened species (4%). 20% and 37% of studies had high relevance to policy and management, respectively. However, only 12.6% of studies actively went out to test or review conservation actions. Although many topics are covered in the literature, improvements are possible. We suggest: (1) broadening the number of habitats, taxonomic groups and scales studied and (2) providing closer and clearer links with other disciplines and research approaches, and with policy and management.  相似文献

The relevance of chemical communication to mammalian conservation is not often the focus of scientific investigation. Our review identifies and discusses ten key areas in which the study of chemical communication aids conservation behaviour. Articles (n = 140) were revealed, most were concerned with population monitoring (22.50%), reducing human-wildlife conflicts (18.93), influencing habitat selection (18.57%), increasing welfare of captive animals (12.86%), encouraging captive breeding (12.86%), reducing predation (5.71%), and increasing the success of release programmes (5.00%). Few articles (<4%) were found relating olfactory studies to health status of wild populations, reducing hybridization or as indication of pollution. A growing number of articles are addressing how olfactory studies may aid conservation, but more rigorous experimental testing and manipulations are required. The vast majority of studies linking olfaction with conservation involved the population monitoring of wild carnivores. We suggest that animal behavioural studies and manipulations of chemical communication can have significant impacts on conservation in these areas, which should be further developed to generate practical applications. Areas of future study include chemical communication of aquatic mammalian species, the transfer of olfactory cues under water, and the identification of genetic markers that may link ‘personality’ with olfactory responses. Linking olfactory studies to fitness, either on an individual or population scale, particularly in a wider ecological context is more likely to increase conservation value. Animal translocations and reintroduction programmes may offer a means to do this and could be an important area to direct future studies.  相似文献

This article overviews recent advances in studies of landscape-water quality relationships using remote sensing techniques. With the increasing feasibility of using remotely-sensed data, landscape-water quality studies can nowbe more easily performed on regional, multi-state scales. Thetraditional method of relating land use and land cover to waterquality has been extended to include landscape pattern and otherlandscape information derived from satellite data. Three itemsare focused on in this article: 1) the increasing recognition ofthe importance of larger-scale studies of regional water qualitythat require a landscape perspective; 2) the increasingimportance of remotely sensed data, such as the imagery-derivednormalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and vegetationphenological metrics derived from time-series NDVI data; and 3) landscape pattern. In some studies, using landscape patternmetrics explained some of the variation in water quality notexplained by land use/cover. However, in some other studies, theNDVI metrics were even more highly correlated to certain waterquality parameters than either landscape pattern metrics or landuse/cover proportions. Although studies relating landscape pattern metrics to water quality have had mixed results, thisrecent body of work applying these landscape measures andsatellite-derived metrics to water quality analysis hasdemonstrated their potential usefulness in monitoring watershedconditions across large regions.  相似文献

Pesticides may be dispersed throughout the environment by several means, including groundwater contamination, surface water contamination, and volatilization with subsequent atmospheric transport and deposition. In earlier research primarily directed at reducing the potential for groundwater contamination, a number of herbicides were microencapsulated within several different polymers. These polymeric formulations were evaluated for efficacy in the greenhouse. In the studies described in this paper, three polymeric alachlor formulations that were the most effective in the greenhouse were evaluated in laboratory volatility studies using pure alachlor and a commercial formulation (Lasso 4EC) for comparison purposes. In a given experiment, technical alachlor, Lasso 4EC, and two polymeric formulations were applied to soil and evaluated in a contained system under 53% humidity with a fixed flow rate. Evolved alachlor was collected in ethylene glycol, recovered with C18 solid phase extraction cartridges, and analyzed by reverse-phase high-performance thin-layer chromatography with densitometry. Duration of the studies ranged from 32 to 39 days. In studies in which all formulations were uniformly incorporated in the soil, total alachlor volatilization from the polymeric microcapsules was consistently lower than that from the alachlor and Lasso 4EC formulations. In studies in which the polymeric formulations were sprinkled on the surface of the soil, microcapsules prepared with the polymer cellulose acetate butyrate released the smallest quantity of volatilized alachlor.  相似文献

It is generally assumed that healthy, natural ecosystems have the potential to sequester carbon under favorable environmental conditions. There is also evidence that CO2 acts as a plant fertilizer. It is of interest to know if these assumptions are valid and how natural systems might respond under future scenarios of CO2 increase and possible climate changes. Few measurements of the effects of CO2 and global climate change have been made on “natural” ecosystems under realistic field conditions. Most measurements have been conducted in the synthetic environments of totally controlled greenhouses and growth chambers. Several lines of evidence indicate that controlled environment studies using plants growing in pots induce experimental artifacts that reduce confidence in the use of results for prediction of future global responses. Open top chambers are being used in several autecological field studies in an attempt to obtain more realistic field environments. A few field microcosm studies have been completed and a system for the free air release of CO2 has been applied in cotton fields. Unfortunately, the requirement of large amounts of CO2 and financial restrictions have precluded the initiation of larger scale field studies in natural vegetation. This paper lists and summarizes the best field studies available but draws heavily on studies from artificial environments and conditions in an attempt to summarize knowledge of global environmental change on forests and other non-agricultural ecosystems. Finally the paper concludes that there is a need for the development and application of equipment for field measurements in several representative natural ecosystems and makes specific recommendation of the creation of a tropical research center.  相似文献

Society is faced with environmental issues that exceed the level of local governments, but which need to be dealt with at international or even global scales. These issues include nature conservation and management, development of a more sustainable agriculture, effects of environmental pollution, biodiversity, and effects of global change. The development of political and technical protocols necessary to control the future state of such environmental issues requires a detailed knowledge of the structure and functioning of the world’s ecosystems. Studies that integrate the interpretation of results from (detailed) community and ecosystem process and pattern studies and that, moreover, include social and economic aspects might be defined as ‘integrated ecosystem studies’. Four examples of integrated ecosystem studies are presented, and it is concluded that a full understanding of the contribution of soil zoology to such studies requires detailed analyses of interactions of fauna with other system components. If not, analyses can result in superficial conclusions that possibly underestimate the vulnerability of ecosystems to disturbances or their sensitivity to management.  相似文献

Fungi are important in soils as both decomposers and plant symbionts, and an understanding of the composition of their complex communities is thus indispensable to answer a variety of ecological questions. 454 Pyrosequencing is currently the method of choice for the in-depth analysis of fungal communities. However, the interpretation of its results is complicated by differences in data analysis approaches that make inter-study comparisons difficult. The pyrosequencing studies published so far have also used variable molecular targets in fungal rDNA. Although the ITS region and, in particular, ITS1 appear to be the most frequent sequencing targets, the use of various primers with different coverages of fungal groups remains a serious problem. Sequence length limits also vary widely across studies, and in many studies, length differences may negatively affect sequence similarity clustering or identification. Unfortunately, many studies neglect the need to correct for method-dependent errors, such as pyrosequencing noise or chimeric sequences. Even when performed, error rates in sequences may be high, and consensus sequences created by sequence clustering therefore better represent operational taxonomic units. We recommend a data analysis workflow that includes sequence denoising, chimera removal, sequence trimming before clustering and random resampling before calculating diversity parameters. The newly developed free pipeline (SEED) introduced here can be used to perform all the required analytical steps. The improvement and unification of data analysis procedures should make future studies both more reliable and comparable and allow meta-studies to be performed to provide more general views on fungal diversity, biogeography or ecology.  相似文献
