优质节水抗旱雄性不育系"沪旱1A"的选育与利用

通过广泛引进和测配筛选旱稻资源,获得对野败不育系具有保持能力的外引旱稻品种“EAIC139-55-1-23”,该品种抗旱性强,品质好,系统选育获得一个稳定的选系,与野败型不育系杂交并进行多代回交,于2003年选育出性状优良,抗旱性强的优质节水抗旱稻雄性不育系“沪旱1A”。以“沪旱1A”为母本选配的“旱优2号”、“旱优3号”等杂交旱稻组合在节约水资源50%的栽培条件下仍表现出较强的增产潜力。     

Genetic Damage Produced by Radiation

In the article "Recent Geology of Cane Wash, Monument Valley, Arizona," by Charles B. Hunt, in the issue of 30 September, page 584, a line of type was unfortunately misplaced at the last moment. The next to the last sentence in the third column should read: "Upstream from the lake beds (Fig. 2) Cane Wash is aggrading the valley floor."     

褐飞虱田间种群的寿命与生物型1种群特异片段的关系

对杭州富阳地区的田间种群进行生物型1种群的特异片断检测,结果表明:无论接虫到抗虫还是感虫水稻品种上,寿命在1～2d与6d以上个体,"-"标记占较大比例,寿命在3～5d的个体,"+"-"比例相差不大,寿命在8d以上的个体,"-"个体存活的比例较多。生物型1的特有条带,在田间种群出现的比例约20%左右。     

Errata

In Wilder Penfield's article, "The interpretive cortex," [Science 129, 1719 (26 June 1959)], the word psychical should be substituted for physical on page 1719, column 3, line 15. On page 1723, column 3, last line, reference should be made to Fig. 6, not Fig. 3.     

Erratum

In the report by H. Vasken Aposhian on "Protection by d-penicillamine against the lethal effects of mercuric chloride" [Science 128, 93 (11 July 1958)], the heading of the last column of Table 1 should have been "Percent," and not "Survival (%)." Mortality, and not survival, is given in this column.     

House panel denies exception for drug

The National Organ Transplant Act (H.R. 4080) emerged from the House Ways and Means health subcommittee minus the so-called "cyclosporine amendment," a provision which would have extended Medicare coverage to the long-term use of immunosuppressive drugs for organ transplant recipients. Cyclosporine became a focus of dispute because of its high cost. Opponents of the deleted provision argued that it would break the precedent under which Medicare pays for drugs only while a patient is in the hospital. Committee members report that pressure from physicians and patients is building to revive the deleted proposal.

The third sentence of the legend for Fig. 2 of the report, "Blocking by picrotoxin of peripheral inhibition in crayfish," by W. G. Van der Kloot, J. Robbins, and I. M. Cooke [Science 127, 521 (7 Mar. 1958)] should have read "The inhibitory nerve was simultaneously stimulated at a rate of 21 stimulations per second (broken line) or at 150 stimulations per second (dotted line)."     

Erratum

Due to a last minute printer's error, the 18 November Table of Contents omitted mention of a Research News article on "The 1977 Nobel Prize in chemistry" by I. Procaccia and J. Ross.     

Erratum

Due to a printer's error, the word "nitrite" was altered to "nitrate" in two instances in the article, "Ever so cautiously, the FDA moves to-ward a ban on nitrites," (8 September, p. 887). The lead sentence should read," The hazard to animals and man of eating excessive amounts of nitrates and nitrites...." The first sentence in the fourth paragraph should read," These circumstances ... the existent but unquantified hazard of adding nitrites to food." Nitrites-not nitrates-are deliberately added to foods.     

Erratum

In the article "Color Defect and Color Theory" by C. H. Graham and Y. Hsia [Science 127, 675 (28 March 1958)], the last 13 lines in column 3, page 679, appear in reverse order. The bottom line should be read first, the second line from the bottom should be read second, and finally, the 13th line from the bottom should be read last.     

春小麦新品系9016选育报告

春小麦新品系9016是由定西市旱作农业科研推广中心以“70—14”作母本、“8365—17”作父本杂交选育而成。在2005-2006年甘肃省东片春小麦区域试验中,平均折合产量4644．5kg／hm^2,较对照品种陇春23号增产10．8％,居10个参试品种（系）第2位。该品系抗旱性强、抗倒伏、抗青秕、抗锈,适宜在甘肃省中部地区,宁夏隆德、西吉等地种植。     

Erratum

In the article "String as a theory of everything" by M. Mitchell Waldrop (Research News, 20 Sept., p. 1251), the last line of the first column was inadvertantly omitted. The affected sentence should have read, "Not only were the strong interactions far more complex than predicted by field theory, but the particles that participated in the strong interactions-the hadrons, a group that includes protons, neutrons, pi mesons, and many others-seemed to be relatively large, extended objects as much as 1 Fermi across (10(-13) centimeter)." In the next-to-the-last line of the second full paragraph in column 2 on page 1252, 10(-19) should have been 10(+19). Finally, the words "quandary" (page 1251, column 1, paragraph 6, line 2) and "quark" (page 1252, column 3, last paragraph, line 18) were misspelled.     

Erratum

The value of the ratio of "apparent" retention volumes (V'(R)) (H)/V'(R))D, given in paragraph 2, sentence 3 of the report, "Isotope Effects in Gas-Liquid Chromatography," by K. E. Wilybach and P. Riesz [Science 126, 748 (18 October 1957)], should have been 1.08 +/- 0.01 instead of 1.80 +/- 0.01.     

The position of the gulf stream during quaternary glaciations

Ocean general circulation theories predict that the position of the boundary between subtropical and subpolar gyres (and therefore the position of the Gulf Stream-North Atlantic Current system and the subpolar-subtropical front) is set by the line of zero "Ekman pumping," where there is no convergence or divergence of water in the directly wind-forced surface layer of the ocean. In the present-day North Atlantic Ocean this line runs southwest to northeast, from off the Carolinas to off Ireland. However, during the last ice age (18,000 years ago) the subpolar-subtropical boundary ran more zonally, directly toward Gibraltar. A numerical atmospheric general circulation model indicates that the field of Ekman pumping 18,000 years ago was modified by the presence of a continental ice cap more than 3 kilometers thick such that the line of zero Ekman pumping overlaid the paleogyre boundary. These results demonstrate that the presence of a thick continental ice sheet could have caused changes in sea surface temperatures in the North Atlantic during Quaternary glaciations by altering wind patterns.     

Corrections and clarifications

In the report "The drift of Saturn's north polar spot observed by the Hubble Space Telescope" by J. Caldwell et al. (16 Apr., p. 326), the revised System III rotation rate of the drift was incorrectly calculated. It should not have been "810.737 degrees +/- 0.008 degrees per day," as stated (line 21, col. 1, p. 329), but rather "810.851 degrees +/-0.008 degrees per day."     

Errata for Volume 123

In the article "Pronuclear fusion as affected by x-rays and by postirradiation anaerobiosis," by C. S. Bachofer, in the issue of 27 Jan., page 139, the last sentence in column 1 should begin "The term (1/4)-fused is used to designate ...," not "The sum (1/4)-fused . . ." as printed. In the article "Magnetic techniques for in vitro isolation of leucocytes," by Sumner Levine, in the issue of 3 Feb., page 186, the equation should read micro radicaln(n+2)=4.90 Bohr magnetons, instead of as printed with the square root sign covering the last part of the equation.     

Erratum

One component (i-inositol at a concentration of 0.002 g/lit) of the nutrient medium was omitted from Table 1 of the article "Molecular Growth Requirements of Single Mammalian Cells," by G. Sato, H. W. Fisher, and T. T. Puck [Science 126, 961-964 (8 Nov. 1957)].     

Erratum

In the Erratum (7 Dec., p. 1320) about the Editors' response to George Legge's letter of 16 November (p. 889), the error was not corrected. Reference should have been made to a "300-nm beam spot," not a "300-microm beam spot."
