The structure of forest stands changes through developmental phases. This study is carried out in the unmanaged, oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) stands in the north of Iran. The aim of this research was to quantify structural characteristics of stands in the stem exclusion phase using common structural indices, which include mingling, tree–tree distance, stem diameter, and tree height differentiation. According to our measurements from three stands, naturally regenerated stands tend to be mixed in species composition have slightly heterogeneous diameter distributions and uniform tree height. The average distance between trees was 3.3 m. Stocking volume of the stands had an average of 540 m3 ha?1 and 412 stem ha?1. Dead wood volume was 24 m3 ha?1, and as a standing volume, the most frequent species in dead wood pool was oriental beech (F. orientalis) (48 %). The common form of dead trees was snag (41 %). The mean value of mingling and tree-to-tree interval indices revealed that beech was mixed intensively with hornbeam and appears to be a more successful competitor for space and light compared with hornbeam; moreover, we found relatively high evidence of inter-species competition in this phase. A better understanding of stand characteristics in the stem exclusion phase as a critical part of the natural dynamics of forest ecosystems could facilitate predictions about the future changes within the stand. 相似文献

Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis) is one of the main tree species in Turkey. In this study, 3-year storage of oriental beechnuts from eight Turkish provenances
was researched. Beechnuts were stored at −6°C in sealed containers. The average germination percentages of over all provenances
were 91.67, 75.92, and 76.75%, prior to initial storage, after 1 year in storage, and after 3 years in storage, respectively.
There were significant decreases in the germination percentages of seven provenances while one provenance retained its high
initial germination ability over a 3-year storage period. The loss of viability initiated from the radicle and the plumula
in stored beechnuts. The average mean germination times were 10.43, 10.22, and 11.89 weeks prior to storage, after 1 year
in storage, and after 3 years in storage, respectively. The beechnuts stored for 3 years germinated significantly later than
both fresh beechnuts and beechnuts stored for 1 year in terms of average mean germination time. This study showed that oriental
beechnuts can be stored in a dormant state for at least 3 years at low temperature (−6°C) with a low moisture content (about
6–7%). 相似文献

This experiment was carried out in a mature (>100-year-old) eastern beech forest in the Eastern Black Sea Region (BSR) of
Turkey. The effects of experimental practices to control the woody plant Rhododendron flavum Don., including grubbing, manual cutting, and foliar and cut-stump spraying with imazapyr and triclopyr, were assessed on
understory and forest floor biomass and nutrients, as well as soil bulk density and nutrient content. The cut plots had 5,
15, and 38 times greater competing vegetation biomass than did the plots treated with triclopyr, grubbing, and imazapyr, respectively.
Because of the increased biomass, the amount of understory N, P, Ca, K, S, and Mg content on the cut plots was also substantially
higher when compared to the grubbed, imazapyr-treated, and triclopyr-treated plots. Triclopyr and imazapyr applications brought
about two- and threefold greater dead organic matter on the forest floor than did cutting and grubbing, respectively. As a
result, forest floor macronutrient contents on the imazapyr- and triclopyr-treated plots were significantly greater than on
the cut plots. Five years after treatments, soil bulk density at the 10–20 cm depth on the imazapyr-sprayed plots was about
14% higher than that on other treatments. Herbicides, especially imazapyr and grubbing were effective in controlling rhododendron.
Macronutrients stored in the rhododendron were released to the forest floor after vegetation was controlled with herbicides. 相似文献

• Background
In the development of pure beech and pure spruce pristine forests, we assume there should be a continuous transition from full stocking to successive disintegration and, finally, total replacement of the first generational wave at the end of its lifetime, dependent on mortality due to overcrowding as well as ageing, leading newly recruited cohorts to grow up from below. 相似文献5.

Stand density management tools help forest managers and landowners to more effectively allocate growing space so that specific silvicultural objectives can be met. Due to the economic importance of Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis Lipsky) forests in Turkey, a stand density management tool was developed for this species to optimize regeneration success rate and tree growth. For the development of this tool, named stand density management diagram (SDMD), we utilized forest inventory data from the Kastamonu Regional Forest Directorate in Turkey. Previously published forest management approaches and models were employed during the development of the tool. The SDMD illustrates the relation among four forest indexes: the basal area per hectare, number of trees per hectare, forest stand volume per hectare, and quadratic mean diameter of the beech stands. The stand stocking percent (SSP) can be determined based upon any two of these four measurements. The results suggest that SSP is a better predictor of tree growth than BA in Oriental beech forests. The newly developed SDMD allows for a more effective use of the growing space to achieve specific silvicultural objectives including tree regeneration, timber production, thinning planning, and wildlife protection in Oriental beech forests. 相似文献

Spatial pattern of recruitment is an important factor influencing population dynamics of plant communities. The spatial pattern is determined by seed dispersal and by the spatial variability of germination and initial survival. In the process of forest expansion following farmland abandonment, mid- and late-successional species are often dispersed in pioneer forests by birds. This could result in an aggregated spatial pattern of seeds that could influence the dynamics of these species in mixed pioneer forests. In the sub-Mediterranean area, mid- and late-successional species such as Quercus pubescens (downy oak) and Fagus sylvatica (European beech) are expected to replace pioneer Pinus species. Using a point sampling method we demonstrated that beech and oak seedlings (height <2 m) have a clumped distribution in the understorey of pine. This could result from an aggregated dispersal by jays (dispersal effect) or from preferential recruitment in particular habitats (habitat effect). To test these hypotheses we proposed a statistical analysis of spatial patterns of regeneration of beech and oak. Ground cover variables (i.e. cover by rock outcrops, herbs, box shrubs, mosses or pine) did not differ significantly around seedlings as compared with random sample plots. Likewise, clumped seedlings had growth similar to isolated seedlings, thus refuting the hypothesis of preferential location in the most favourable microsites. Aggregated dispersal seems to be involved in the process of regeneration. Since beech and oak seedlings have contrasting ecological demands, we discuss the implication of this pattern for the replacement dynamics of pine by these species. 相似文献

The objectives of the work described here were to evaluate the diversity of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi within Spanish beech
(Fagus sylvatica L.) forests subjected to clear-cutting and natural regeneration and to elucidate the extent to which the carbohydrate concentration
in roots of trees of different ages and sizes is related to ECM colonization. The study concerned an unmanaged forest, a stand
clear-cut in 1996 and another clear-cut in 2001. ECM colonization of beech roots showed seasonal dynamics in the disturbed
areas, but the percentage of roots colonized by ECM was not always related to the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates.
The composition of ECM communities differed between different stands and 40% of ECM morphotypes only occurred in disturbed
ecosystems. However, comparable numbers of different ECM morphotypes (24, 25) were found in the three beech stands. This finding
indicates that ECM diversity was quite high and similar within disturbed and unmanaged areas. This finding suggests that (1)
ECM diversity was not affected by the size and age of trees and (2) the potential of ECM inocula remained high within clear-cut
areas. Consequently, the introduction of ECM inocula by silvicultural practices would not be needed to improve the regeneration
of clear-cut areas described in our study. 相似文献

Biological and other alternative control methods were tested against the woolly beech aphid (Phyllaphis fagi). Field applications of mineral oil to the egg stage reduced initial aphid population by 75%, but only when the eggs were exposed to oil close to the time of hatching. Earlier oil treatments had no effect. Bioassays with the insect pathogenic fungus Lecanicillium lecanii (Verticillium lecanii) in the commercial formulation Vertalec® were conducted using different dosages, i.e. 1 × 106 ml?1 (recommended dosage) and 2 × 107 ml?1. Both nymphs and adults were susceptible to fungal infection at both dosages. The existence of a dense wax-covering in adult P. fagi had no protective effect against fungal infection. In bioassays where leaves were treated with the recommended dosage of Vertalec, there was no difference in mortality measured after 14 days between adult P. fagi with an intact wax-layer and adult P. fagi where the wax-layer had been removed. In semi-field trials with two L. lecanii treatments at the recommended dosage, the aphid population was reduced. There was no enhanced effect with the addition of an additive to the fungal suspension or from covering the plants with a polypropylene cover. The results reveal potential alternative control methods against P. fagi populations. However, adequate control with L. lecanii probably requires several treatments as opposed to the two that were tested in the present experiment. Furthermore, efficiency may depend on summer temperatures and humidity. 相似文献

Castanea sativa is a valuable tree species in Hyrcanian forests, an evolutionary relict ecosystem whose communities suffer from overexploitation and fungal diseases. In the current study, three species delimitation methods were utilized with ITS regions sequencing to determine the taxonomic status of Septoria causing leaf blotch of C. sativa in Hyrcanian forests. The results indicated that the length of ITS region in the genus Septoria (extracted from GenBank) varied from 650 to 680 bp. There were almost three times more variable sites in ITS1 than in ITS2. The ITS2 secondary structure of Hyrcanian Septoria community had the highest similarity with Septoria castaneicola, except for some differences in helix II and III. Also, Hyrcanian samples had minimum genetic distances with S. castaneicola and maximum with Septoria quercicola. The maximum parsimony method divided the studied Septoria genus into three distinct clades, mostly located in clade I. Clade II consisted entirely of Septoria aciculosa, while clade III contained S. castaneicola as well as Hyrcanian samples. 相似文献

Few tree size/leaf area correlations have been produced for hardwoods, where the extrapolation from individual branches to
the whole tree is less straightforward than in conifers with more regular branching patterns. We used randomized branch sampling
to estimate leaf area of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) trees of different stands, ages and areas in Austria. Cross-sectional areas (CSA) predicted 87–92% of leaf area variation,
the best predictor being the sum of branch CSA. Leaf area was somewhat better correlated with CSA at breast height than at
the base of the crown, and using sapwood instead of total CSA made little difference. While there was no effect of growth
area, a stepwise regression model showed that dominant trees in pole-stage had, for unclear reasons, significantly higher
leaf area/CSA relationships. A comparison with regressions produced from smaller beech trees in other parts of Europe suggests
that the leaf area/basal area regression is generally valid for beech in central Europe. 相似文献

We developed ring-width chronologies for living trees of Japanese beech at two forest sites on the northern-most part of Honshu
Island, Japan. A statistical threshold (running expressed population signal) yielded these site chronologies spanning 1853–1994
(142 years) and 1867–1994 (128 years). We examined two factors, climate and masting, that could affect the variations of radial
growth. The response function analysis revealed that the ring width correlated positively with July and August temperatures
of the previous growth year. The optimal radial growth of Japanese beech may largely depend on a warm previous summer with
above-average temperatures. The years of good masting coincided mostly with those showing abrupt growth depression, although
only the short-term records of masting were available.

Fine root dynamics in mono-specific stands of mature Fagus sylvatica L. and Picea abies Karst. was studied from December 2003 to December 2004 in a stand in Southern Germany. Minirhizotrons were used to draw between
species comparisons concerning fine root (≤1 mm) longevity and temporal patterns of fine root dynamics (growth and mortality)
as related to seasonal changes in soil water content and soil temperature. In F. sylvatica, median fine root longevity from early seasonal to late-seasonal cohorts was low (77 days). Fine root dynamics scaled positively
with seasonal changes in soil water and temperature indicating accelerated fine root turnover during favourable soil conditions.
In contrast, fine root longevity in P. abies (273 days) was significantly higher when compared to F. sylvatica and increased from early seasonal to late-seasonal cohorts. Fine root dynamics in P. abies did not correlate with soil environmental conditions. Rather a large proportion of new fine roots occurred during the dry
season in superficial soil layers. The data suggest species inherent patterns of fine root longevity and temporal patterns
of fine root dynamics. 相似文献

Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) dominate many of the European forest stands. Also, mixtures of European beech and Scots pine more or less occur over all European countries, but have been scarcely investigated. The area occupied by each species is of high relevance, especially for growth evaluation and comparison of different species in mixed and monospecific stands. Thus, we studied different methods to describe species proportions and their definition as proportion by area. 25 triplets consisting of mixed and monospecific stands were established across Europe ranging from Lithuania to Spain in northern to southern direction and from Bulgaria to Belgium in eastern to western direction. On stand level, the conclusive method for estimating the species proportion as a fraction of the stand area relates the observed density (tree number or basal area) to its potential. This stand-level estimation makes use of the potential from comparable neighboring monospecific stands or from maximum density lines derived from other data, e.g. forest inventories or permanent observations plots. At tree level, the fraction of the stand area occupied by a species can be derived from the proportions of their crown projection area or of their leaf area. The estimates of the potentials obtained from neighboring monospecific stands, especially in older stands, were poorer than those from the maximum density line depending on the Martonne aridity index. Therefore, the stand-level method in combination with the Martonne aridity index for potential densities can be highly recommended. The species’ proportions estimated with this method are best approximated by the proportions of the species’ leaf areas. In forest practice, the most commonly applied method is an ocular estimation of the proportions by crown projection area. Even though the proportions of pine were calculated here by measuring crown projection areas in the field, we found this method to underestimate the proportion by 25% compared to the stand-level approach. 相似文献

• Introduction
The annual development cycle of boreal and temperate trees results from an evolutionary trade-off between two opposing forces. These are namely, the adjustment of leaf phenology to the timing of frost occurrence at the beginning and/or the end of the growth season countered by an effective adjustment to the duration of the growth season to maximise photosynthesis and biomass production during the growing season. 相似文献17.
Austrocedrus chilensis forests suffer from a disease caused by Phytophthora austrocedrae, which is found often in wet soils. We applied three widely used modelling techniques, with different data requirements,
to model disease potential distribution under current environmental conditions: Mahalanobis distance, Maxent and Logistic
regression. Each model was built using field data of health condition and landscape layers of environmental conditions (distance
to streams, slope, aspect, elevation, mean annual precipitation and soil pH NaF). We compared model predictions by area under
the receiver operating characteristic curve and Kappa statistics. A reasonable ability to predict observed disease distribution
was found for each of the three modelling techniques. However, Maxent and Logistic regression presented the best predictive
performance, with significant differences with respect to the Mahalanobis distance model. Our results suggested that if good
absence data are available, Logistic regression should be used in order to better discriminate sites with high risk of disease.
On the other hand, if absence data are not available or doubtful, Maxent could be a very good option. The three models predicted
that around 50% (49–56%) of the currently asymptomatic forests are located on sites at risk of disease according to abiotic
factors. Most of these asymptomatic forests surround the current diseased patches, at distances lower than 100 m from diseased
patches. Management considerations and the scope of future studies were discussed in this article. 相似文献

Bursaphelenchus mucronatus Mamiya et Enda has been recovered for the first time from adults of the cerambycid beetle, Monochamus urussovi (Fischer), in Hokkaido, Japan. The nematode was also recovered from the inner bark of Picea jezoensis (Siebold et Zuccarini) Carrière and Abies sachalinensis (Fr Schmidt) Masters infested with M. urussovi larvae. PCR–RFLP analysis indicated that B. mucronatus in Hokkaido is the European type. 相似文献

The efficiency of the botanical insecticide (BI) NeemAzal T/S (containing 1% Azadirachtin A), on the basis of azadirachtin
applied in a dose of 20 g a.i. ha−1 against Brassica pod midge (Dasineura brassicae), has been monitored for 4 years. The biological efficiency of BI was compared with the efficiency of some synthetic insecticides.
It was ascertained that BI was very efficient in decreasing the number of damaged oilseed rape pods (ranging from 56.5 to
85.9% compared to untreated plants) and its efficiency was comparable with synthetic insecticides based on Chloronicotinyl
(Thiacloprid) and Neonicotinoid (Acetamiprid). BI’s efficiency was, in some years, even significantly higher compared to pyrethroid
(λ-cyhalothrin). The high biological efficiency of azadirachtin that we ascertained was significantly reflected in increasing
potential crop yields. The yield increase of azadirachtin ranged between 9.3 and 19.4% compared to the control sample. Azadirachtin
showed the highest yield for the whole time of experimentation, and in some years the yield increase was significantly higher
compared to some synthetic agents. 相似文献

The dynamics of mixed stands are more complex and less studied than those of monospecific stands. The objective of this work was to analyze the variables involved in seedling occurrence and seedling survival in mixed stands of Pinus pinaster and P. pinea in Mediterranean areas. From 2011 to 2016, regeneration of both species was monitored at two sites located in Central Spain. We installed 72 regeneration plots where seedling dynamics were monitored. All the trees in the study areas were measured and mapped. Additionally, we took hemispherical photographs in each regeneration plot. The average density of P. pinea seedlings over the study period was almost 20 times larger than that of P. pinaster. Our results indicate that the seedlings of both species grow under moderate light conditions. In addition, we found that the occurrence of seedlings of both species was related to the structure of the stand. P. pinea seedlings grew where the density and size of P. pinaster trees were low and where P. pinea trees provided moderately sheltered conditions, whereas the number of P. pinaster seedlings was related to under intermediate densities of P. pinaster trees. Furthermore, seedling survival was positively associated with age of the seedlings and negatively with the August average maximum temperature. The temporal continuity of mixed stands of P. pinea and P. pinaster in the study area is compromised by the observed lack of regeneration of P. pinaster. 相似文献
