Objective To evaluate electroencephalographic indices, invasive arterial blood pressure and pulse rate as indicators of nociception during isoflurane anaesthesia in pigs. Animals Ten Norwegian Landrace pigs, five castrated males and five females, weighing between 19 and 29 kg. Materials and methods The pigs were anaesthetized with isoflurane and prepared for the measurement of heart rate (HR), mean arterial pressure (MAP) and the electroencephalogram (EEG). The inspired isoflurane concentration (Fi ′ISO) was then adjusted until the suppression ratio (SR) exceeded 20%, after which the corresponding end‐expired concentration (Fe ′ISO) was maintained for 30 minutes. The effects of noxious stimuli, consisting of pinching (nasal septum, interdigital web, anus, periople) and clamping (tail, claw) on spectral edge frequency 95%, median frequency, alpha/delta ratio, beta/delta ratio, theta/delta ratio, total power, suppression ratio, MAP and HR were recorded. Fe ′ISO was then decreased by 0.3% and maintained for 30 minutes after which noxious stimulation was re‐applied. This was repeated twice with Fe ′ISO reductions of 0.3% being applied each time. Changes in measured variables before and after noxious stimulation were then compared at each of four levels of anaesthesia. Results Noxious stimulation caused significant MAP increases at the lowest two levels for Fe ′ISO. There were no significant changes in the other variables examined. Conclusion Of the variables examined, mean arterial blood pressure is the most sensitive indicator of nociception in isoflurane‐anaesthetized pigs. Clinical relevance When evaluating nociception under isoflurane anaesthesia in pigs mean arterial blood pressure should be monitored when surgery is performed.  相似文献

Objectives To compare the second differential index (SDI) calculated from the auditory evoked potential (AEP) and electroencephalogram (EEG) parameters: median frequency (MF), spectral edge frequency (SEF) and burst suppression rate (BSR) determined at four equivalent minimum alveolar concentrations (MAC) of isoflurane or halothane. Animals Twelve male Wistar rats weighing 418 g (SD ± 18.4 g). Methods Auditory evoked potentials and EEG responses were recorded in animals implanted with electrodes at established anaesthetic concentrations. Depth of anaesthesia was assessed using the strength of the pedal withdrawal reflex (PWR), and data were analysed using repeated measures anova and paired t‐tests. Results The SEF tended to decrease with increasing depth of halothane anaesthesia (F = 4.198, p = 0.05), but not with isoflurane. The MF and SDI were significantly higher during halothane than with isoflurane (F = 5.82, p = 0.036 and F = 5.263, p = 0.045, respectively) at equivalent depths of anaesthesia, and EEG burst suppression occurred at deeper planes of isoflurane but not halothane anaesthesia. Conclusions The study demonstrated that EEG and AEP characteristics recorded at MAC equivalent concentrations were suppressed to a greater degree by isoflurane than by halothane. These findings have strong implications for research projects where EEG recordings are collected, and also cast more general doubts upon the value of such parameters for evaluating depth of isoflurane anaesthesia in rats.  相似文献

The effects of epidural administration of 250 μg/kg xylazine on EEG responses to surgical stimulation of 5 different intensities were evaluated during isoflurane anaesthesia for an experimental orthopaedic procedure in dogs. The dogs were assigned randomly to one of 2 treatment groups receiving either xylazine (n = 4) or equal volumes of sterile water (n = 4) (control group) epidurally. Intense surgical stimulation during removal of a bone graft from the dorsoiliac spine of the ileum was associated with a significantly (P = 0.0339) higher increase in EEG alpha/delta ratio after epidural administration of sterile water than after epidural injection of 250 μg/kg of xylazine. In addition, the preincision baseline values for 80% spectral edge frequency were significantly (P = 0.0339) lower in the xylazine group compared to control dogs. Our results suggest that epidural administration of 250 μg/kg of xylazine during orthopaedic procedures in dogs exerts antinociceptive effects which may be in part mediated by a supraspinal effect of xylazine.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects of three rates of dexmedetomidine (DMED) constant rate infusion (CRI) on overall tissue perfusion, isoflurane (ISO) requirements, haemodynamics and quality of recovery in canine surgical patients. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, blinded clinical study. ANIMALS: Client-owned dogs presented for soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery. METHODS: Following intravenous (IV) pre-medication with DMED (5 microg kg(-1)) and buprenorphine (10 microg kg(-1)) and propofol induction, anaesthesia was maintained with ISO in oxygen/air supplemented with a DMED CRI (1, 2 or 3 microg kg(-1) hour(-1); groups 1, 2 and 3, respectively). Ventilation was controlled in all animals using intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). Monitoring included end-tidal (ET) gases, ECG, arterial blood pressure, body temperature and sequential arterial blood gas and lactate measurements. Quality of recovery was scored after intramuscular (IM) administration of atipamezole (ATI) (12.5 microg kg(-1)). Immediate post-operative analgesia was provided with carprofen and/or buprenorphine. An analysis of variance was conducted for repeated measurements obtained during 80 minutes after first incision. Categorical data were evaluated with Chi-square analyses. RESULTS: Arterial blood pressure remained stable and within clinically acceptable limits. Mean heart rate in group 2 was significantly lower than in group 1. The incidence of 2nd degree AV block type II was significantly higher in group 3. Mean arterial lactate concentrations remained below 2 mmol/L in all groups during the study, with a significant increase occurring during recovery compared with surgery for group 3. Mean e'ISO% was similar and <1% in all groups. Complete recovery from anaesthesia was achieved after ATI administration and was of good quality in all but three animals. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Dexmedetomidine CRI is a reliable and valuable adjunct to ISO anaesthesia in maintaining surgical anaesthesia in ASA I-II dogs. Data reported indicate adequate overall tissue perfusion and a low ISO requirement while enabling a smooth and rapid recovery following ATI. The DMED CRI of 1 microg kg(-1) hour(-1) following a loading dose of 5 microg kg(-1) produced the most favourable results.  相似文献

Intraoperative bradycardia is not an uncommon complication in anaesthetised horses and it has been recommended that severe bradycardia (defined as heart rate (HR) <25 beats/min) during general anaesthesia, when associated with hypotension (mean arterial pressure (MAP) <70 mmHg) and other signs of inadequate tissue perfusion, should be treated with anticholinergics. Muscarinic antagonists, such as atropine and glycopyrrolate, cause positive chronotropism and dromotropism (improved atrioventricular conduction) by competitively blocking the effects of acetylcholine at muscarinic receptors in the heart. However, in horses, prolonged intestinal hypomotility and colic have been associated with the use of atropine and glycopyrrolate which has led to the investigation of the use of hyoscine N-butylbromide (hyoscine NBB) to treat alpha 2 agonist-induced bradycardia in horses. This report describes the successful use of hyoscine NBB to treat symptomatic intraoperative bradycardia in three isoflurane-anaesthetised horses.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate cardiovascular and respiratory effects and pharmacokinetics of a 24-hour intravenous constant rate infusion (CRI) of dexmedetomidine (DMED) during and after propofol (PRO) or isoflurane (ISO) anaesthesia in dogs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomized, cross-over study. ANIMALS: Ten healthy adult Beagles. METHODS: Instrumented dogs received a DMED-loading bolus (25 microg m(-2)) at time 0 followed by a 24-hour CRI (25 microg m(-2) hour(-1)), with PRO or ISO induction/maintenance of anaesthesia during the first 2 hours (PRO and ISO treatment groups, respectively). Cardiovascular, respiratory, blood gas, airway gas, serum chemistry variables and DMED plasma concentration data were collected at -15, 5, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. A number of cardiorespiratory and tissue oxygenation variables were calculated from the above data. After the 2-hours of anaesthesia, heart and respiratory rates and electrocardiograms were recorded and DMED plasma concentrations were determined for up to 26 hours. RESULTS: Vasopressor effects and the decrease in heart rate (HR) and cardiac index induced by DMED were greater for PRO than ISO, but were within clinically acceptable ranges. Adequate oxygenation was maintained above the critical O(2) delivery level. The overall incidence of unfavourable arrhythmias was low and tended to vary inversely with HR. Mean DMED plasma concentration ranged from 0.23 to 0.47 ng mL(-1) for both groups during the 24-hour CRI with a mean elimination half-life of approximately 0.46 hour. CONCLUSION AND/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: DMED CRI resulted in typical alpha(2)-agonist induced haemodynamic changes with minimal respiratory effects, and appeared to be an efficacious adjunct during and after PRO or ISO anaesthesia in healthy dogs.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare isoflurane alone or in combination with systemic ketamine and lidocaine for general anaesthesia in horses.Study designProspective, randomized, blinded clinical trial.AnimalsForty horses (ASA I-III) undergoing elective surgery.MethodsHorses were assigned to receive isoflurane anaesthesia alone (ISO) or with ketamine and lidocaine (LKI). After receiving romifidine, diazepam, and ketamine, the isoflurane end-tidal concentration was set at 1.3% and subsequently adjusted by the anaesthetist (unaware of treatments) to maintain a light plane of surgical anaesthesia. Animals in the LKI group received lidocaine (1.5 mg kg−1 over 10 minutes, followed by 40 μg kg−1 minute−1) and ketamine (60 μg kg−1 minute−1), both reduced to 65% of the initial dose after 50 minutes, and stopped 15 minutes before the end of anaesthesia. Standard clinical cardiovascular and respiratory parameters were monitored. Recovery quality was scored from one (very good) to five (very poor). Differences between ISO and LKI groups were analysed with a two-sample t-test for parametric data or a Fischer's exact test for proportions (p < 0.05 for significance). Results are mean ± SD.ResultsHeart rate was lower (p = 0.001) for LKI (29 ± 4) than for ISO (34 ± 6). End-tidal concentrations of isoflurane (ISO: 1.57% ± 0.22; LKI: 0.97% ± 0.33), the number of horses requiring thiopental (ISO: 10; LKI: 2) or dobutamine (ISO:8; LKI:3), and dobutamine infusion rates (ISO:0.26 ± 0.09; LKI:0.18 ± 0.06 μg kg−1 minute−1) were significantly lower in LKI compared to the ISO group (p < 0.001). No other significant differences were found, including recovery scores.Conclusions and clinical relevanceThese results support the use of lidocaine and ketamine to improve anaesthetic and cardiovascular stability during isoflurane anaesthesia lasting up to 2 hours in mechanically ventilated horses, with comparable quality of recovery.  相似文献

Objectives To evaluate the circulatory, respiratory and behavioral effects of isoflurane (ISO) anesthesia in llamas during mechanical ventilation and spontaneous breathing. Design Prospective randomised study. Animals Six adult, neutered male llamas (10 ± 1 years [mean ± SD], 179 ± 32 kg). Materials and methods Animals in which the minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) had been previously determined were anesthetized with ISO in oxygen. Inspired and end‐tidal (ET) ISO were sampled continuously. Arterial blood pH, respiratory and circulatory variables, and clinical signs of anesthesia were recorded at three doses (1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 times the individual animal's MAC; mean MAC value 1.13%) of ISO during spontaneous and controlled ventilation. A series of Latin squares was used to determine order of dose. Controlled ventilation (CV) (target PaCO2 38 ± 5 mm Hg [5.0 ± 0.6 kPa]) preceded spontaneous ventilation (SV) at each dose. Animals breathed spontaneously for approximately 10 minutes prior to data collection. Body temperature was maintained at 37 ± 0.6 °C. Circulatory and respiratory data were analysed with a mixed model, least squares analysis of variance, for repeated measures taken at equally spaced intervals. p < 0.05. Results Dose and mode of ventilation had significant influences on measured variables. For example, heart rate increased as dose increased; 67 ± 14 beats minute?1 at 1.0 MAC‐CV versus 77 ± 6 beats minute?1 at 2 MAC‐CV. Conversely, mean arterial pressure decreased with increasing dose; 82 ± 13 mm Hg at MAC‐CV versus 52 ± 15 mm Hg at 2 MAC‐CV. Arterial CO2 increased with increasing dose during SV; 45 ± 5 mm Hg [6 ± 0.6 kPa] at MAC versus 53 ± 4 mmHg [7 ± 0.5 kPa] at 2 MAC. Reflex activity (e.g. palpebral reflex) and muscle tone (e.g. jaw tone) decreased while eyelid aperture increased with increasing anesthetic dose. Conclusions and Clinical Relevance The influence of ISO dose and mode of ventilation on circulatory and respiratory variables in llamas is qualitatively similar to that reported in other species. Changes in reflex activity and muscle tone may be used to guide appropriate anesthetic delivery in ISO‐induced llamas.  相似文献

Objectives

To compare the effects of a lidocaine constant rate infusion (CRI) combined with 1% isoflurane versus those of 2% isoflurane alone on cardiovascular variables in anaesthetized horses, and to estimate the sample size required to detect a difference in recovery quality.

Study design

Prospective, randomized, blinded, crossover study.

Animals

Twelve healthy experimental horses.

Methods

Horses were anaesthetized twice using an intravenous (IV) administration of acepromazine, romifidine, diazepam and ketamine. Horses were placed in dorsal recumbency and ventilated mechanically. During the first 10 minutes (P1), anaesthesia was maintained with a 2% inspired isoflurane fraction (FIIso). During the following 20 minutes (P2), horses received IV lidocaine (1.5 mg kg?1) (group IL) or saline (group I). During the last 60 minutes (P3), group IL received a lidocaine CRI (50 μg kg?1 minute?1 IV) and FIIso 1%, whereas group I received a saline CRI and FIIso 2%. Three weeks later, the horses received the alternative treatment. Painful stimuli were induced by introducing an 18 gauge needle intramuscularly. Ketamine and dobutamine requirements and physiological variables were recorded. Recoveries were assessed by two anaesthetists unaware of the treatment. Lidocaine plasma concentrations were measured during recovery. Data were analysed with anova.

Results

During P3, group IL had a lower heart rate (p = 0.002), higher mean arterial pressure (p < 0.001) and lower dobutamine requirement (p < 0.001) than group I. One horse had lidocaine plasma concentrations above toxic levels. Recoveries did not differ significantly between groups. Sample sizes of 208 horses in each group would be necessary to detect a statistically significant difference (85% statistical power) in recovery quality.

Conclusions and clinical relevance

A lidocaine CRI combined with FIIso 1% rather than FIIso 2% alone may improve cardiovascular variables in healthy anaesthetized horses.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo compare breathing patterns and transdiaphragmatic pressure during total intravenous (TIVA) and isoflurane anaesthesia in ponies.Study designExperimental, cross–over study.AnimalsSix healthy ponies weighing 286 (233–388) ± 61 kg, age 13 (9–16) ± 3 years.MethodsFollowing premedication with romifidine [80 μg kg?1 intravenously (IV)], general anaesthesia was induced with midazolam (0.06 mg kg?1 IV) and ketamine (2.5 mg kg?1 IV) and maintained with either isoflurane (Fe’Iso = 1.1%) (T-ISO) or an IV combination of romifidine (120 μg kg?1 per hour), midazolam (0.09 mg kg?1 hour?1) and ketamine (3.3 mg kg?1 hour?1) (T-TIVA), while breathing 60% oxygen (FIO2). The circumference changes of the rib cage (RC) and abdominal compartment (ABD) were recorded using respiratory ultrasonic plethysmography (RUP). Balloon tipped catheters were placed in the distal oesophagus and the stomach and maximal transdiaphragmatic pressure (Pdi max) was calculated during Mueller's manoeuvre.ResultsThe breathing pattern T-ISO was more regular and respiratory rate significantly lower compared with T-TIVA. Ponies in T-TIVA showed regularly appearing sighs, which were never observed in T-ISO. Different contribution of the RC and ABD compartments to the breathing pattern was observed with a smaller participation of the RC to the total volume change during T-ISO. Transdiaphragmatic pressures (mean 13.7 ± SD 8.61 versus 23.4 ± 7.27 cmH2O, p < 0.0001) were higher in T-TIVA compared to T-ISO. The sum of the RC and ABD circumferential changes was lower during T-TIVA compared to T-ISO (6.32 ± 4.42 versus 11.72 ± 4.38 units, p < 0.0001).Conclusion and clinical relevanceMarked differences in breathing pattern and transdiaphragmatic pressure exist during inhalation- and TIVA and these should be taken into account for clinical estimation of anaesthetic depth.  相似文献

Objective To investigate the changes in serum enzymes considered as biochemical indicators of hepatobiliary function in dogs following 5 hours of anaesthesia with isoflurane (ISO) or sevoflurane (SEVO). Study design Experimental randomized crossover study, with intervals of at least 15 days between successive treatments. Animals Eight healthy adult mongrel dogs, four male, four female, weight 13.6–21.6 kg. Methods Treatments consisted of anaesthesia with ISO or SEVO at 1 or 1.5 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC) delivered in oxygen. MAC was taken as 1.39% for ISO and 2.36% for SEVO. Anaesthesia was induced by mask then, after endotracheal intubation, maintained according to the treatment protocol using a small animal circle system. Cardiopulmonary monitoring was carried out. Venous blood samples, obtained by needle puncture, were taken at 24 hours and 2, 7 and 14 days post anaesthesia. Serum concentrations of total protein, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase, (LDH), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma‐glutamyltransferese and total bilirubin were measured. Changes with time and with treatment were compared by Friedman analysis, Wilcoxon Signed test and Kruskal‐Wallis test as relevant. p‐ value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results Compared to base‐line values, at 24 hours post‐anaesthesia there were significant increases in AST, ALT, ALP and LDH following one or more of the treatments, but by 2 days residual changes were not significant. At 24 hours, AST for treatment 1.5 MAC ISO was higher than 1 MAC ISO (p < 0.002), and LDH higher for 1.5 MAC SEVO than 1 MAC SEVO. Conclusion and clinical relevance Both ISO and SEVO, at concentrations used for clinical anaesthesia, produce transient moderate effects on some hepatobiliary enzyme concentrations in dogs.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of spontaneous breathing and mechanical ventilation on haemodynamic variables, including muscle and skin perfusion measured with laser Doppler flowmetery, in horses anaesthetized with isoflurane. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective controlled study. ANIMALS: Ten warm-blood trotter horses (five males, five females). Mean mass was 492 kg (range 420-584 kg) and mean age was 5 years (range 4-8 years). MATERIALS AND METHODS: After pre-anaesthetic medication with detomidine (10 microg kg(-1)) anaesthesia was induced with intravenous (IV) guaifenesin and thiopental (4-5 mg kg(-1) IV) and maintained using isoflurane in oxygen. The horses were positioned in dorsal recumbency. In five animals breathing was initially spontaneous (SB) while the lungs of the other five were ventilated mechanically using intermittent positive pressure ventilation (IPPV). Total anaesthesia time was 4 hours with the ventilatory mode changed after 2 hours. During anaesthesia, heart rate (HR) cardiac output (Qt) stroke volume (SV) systemic arterial blood pressures (sAP), and pulmonary arterial pressure (pAP) were recorded. Peripheral perfusion was measured in the semimembranosus and gluteal muscles and on the tail skin using laser Doppler flowmetry. Arterial (a) and mixed venous (v) blood gases, pH, haemoglobin concentration [Hb], haematocrit (Hct), plasma lactate concentration and muscle temperature were measured. Oxygen content, venous admixture (s/Qt) oxygen delivery (DO(2)) and oxygen consumption (VO(2)) were calculated. RESULTS: During mechanical ventilation, HR, sAP, pAP, Qt, SV, Qs/Qt and PaCO(2) were lower and PaO(2) was higher compared with spontaneous breathing. There were no differences between the modes of ventilation in the level of perfusion, DO(2), VO(2), [Hb], (Hct), or plasma lactate concentration. After the change from IPPV to SB, left semimembranosus muscle and skin perfusion improved, while muscle perfusion tended to decrease when SB was changed to IPPV. Low-frequency flow motion was seen twice as frequently during IPPV compared with SB. CONCLUSIONS: Mechanical ventilation impaired cardiovascular function compared with SB in horses during isoflurane anaesthesia. Muscle and skin perfusion changes occurred with ventilation, although further studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo examine the influence of a low dose dexmedetomidine infusion on the nociceptive withdrawal reflex and temporal summation in dogs during isoflurane anaesthesia.Study designProspective experimental blinded cross-over study.AnimalsEight healthy mixed breed dogs, body weight Mean ± SD 26.5 ± 8.4 kg and age 25 ± 16 months.MethodsAnaesthesia was induced with propofol and maintained with isoflurane (Fe′ISO 1.3%) delivered in oxygen and air. After stabilization, baseline recordings (time 0) were obtained, then a dexmedetomidine bolus (1 μg kg?1 IV) followed by a continuous rate infusion (1 μg kg?1 hour?1) or saline placebo were administered. At times 10, 30 and 60 minutes after the initial bolus, electrical stimulations of increasing intensity were applied over the lateral plantar digital nerve, and administered both as single and as repeated stimuli. The resulting reflex responses were recorded using electromyography. Data were analysed using a multivariable linear regression model and a Kruskal Wallis test for single stimulation data, and repeated measures anova and paired t-test for repeated stimulation data.ResultsThe AUC for the stimulus-response curves after single stimulation were similar for both treatments at time 0. At times 10, 30 and 60 the AUCs for the stimulus-response curves were significantly lower with dexmedetomidine treatment than with placebo. Temporal summation was evident in both treatments at times 0, 10, 30 and 60 starting from a stimulation intensity of 10 mA. The magnitude of temporal summation was smaller in dexmedetomidine than in placebo treated dogs at time 10, 30 and 60, but not at time 0.ConclusionsDuring isoflurane anaesthesia, low dose dexmedetomidine suppresses the nociceptive reflex responses after single and repeated electrical stimulation.Clinical relevanceThis experimental study confirms previous reports on its peri-operative efficacy under clinical conditions, and further indicates that dexmedetomidine might reduce the risk of post-operative chronic pain development.  相似文献

Objective To compare recovery times and quality following maintenance of anaesthesia with sevoflurane or isoflurane after a standard intravenous induction technique in horses undergoing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Study design Prospective, randomised, blinded clinical study. Animals One hundred ASA I/II horses undergoing MRI. Materials and methods Pre‐anaesthetic medication with intravenous acepromazine and romifidine was followed by induction of anaesthesia with diazepam and ketamine. The animals were randomised into two groups to receive either sevoflurane or isoflurane in oxygen. Horses were subjectively scored (0–5) for temperament before sedation, for quality of sedation, induction and maintenance and anaesthetic depth on entering the recovery area. Recoveries were videotaped and scored by an observer, unaware of the treatment, using two scoring systems. Times to the first movement, head lift, sternal recumbency and standing were recorded along with the number of attempts to achieve sternal and standing positions. Variables were compared using a Student t‐test or Mann–Whitney U‐test (p < 0.05), while the correlation between subjective recovery score and other relevant variables was tested calculating the Spearman Rank correlation coefficient and linear regression modelling performed when significant. Results Seventy‐seven horses entered the final analysis, 38 received isoflurane and 39 sevoflurane. Body mass, age and duration of anaesthesia were similar for both groups. There were no differences in recovery times, scoring or number of attempts to achieve sternal recumbency and standing between groups. Weak, but significant, correlations were found between the subjective recovery score for the pooled data from both groups and both temperament and time in sternal recumbency. Conclusions No differences in recovery times or quality were detected following isoflurane or sevoflurane anaesthesia after intravenous induction. Clinical relevance Sevoflurane affords no obvious advantage in recovery over isoflurane following a standard intravenous induction technique in horses not undergoing surgery.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo test if the addition of butorphanol by constant rate infusion (CRI) to medetomidine–isoflurane anaesthesia reduced isoflurane requirements, and influenced cardiopulmonary function and/or recovery characteristics.Study designProspective blinded randomised clinical trial.Animals61 horses undergoing elective surgery.MethodsHorses were sedated with intravenous (IV) medetomidine (7 μg kg?1); anaesthesia was induced with IV ketamine (2.2 mg kg?1) and diazepam (0.02 mg kg?1) and maintained with isoflurane and a CRI of medetomidine (3.5 μg kg?1 hour?1). Group MB (n = 31) received butorphanol CRI (25 μg kg?1 IV bolus then 25 μg kg?1 hour?1); Group M (n = 30) an equal volume of saline. Artificial ventilation maintained end-tidal CO2 in the normal range. Horses received lactated Ringer’s solution 5 mL kg?1 hour?1, dobutamine <1.25 μg kg?1 minute?1 and colloids if required. Inspired and exhaled gases, heart rate and mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) were monitored continuously; pH and arterial blood gases were measured every 30 minutes. Recovery was timed and scored. Data were analyzed using two way repeated measures anova, independent t-tests or Mann–Whitney Rank Sum test (p < 0.05).ResultsThere was no difference between groups with respect to anaesthesia duration, end-tidal isoflurane (MB: mean 1.06 ± SD 0.11, M: 1.05 ± 0.1%), MAP (MB: 88 ± 9, M: 87 ± 7 mmHg), heart rate (MB: 33 ± 6, M: 35 ± 8 beats minute?1), pH, PaO2 (MB: 19.2 ± 6.6, M: 18.2 ± 6.6 kPa) or PaCO2. Recovery times and quality did not differ between groups, but the time to extubation was significantly longer in group MB (26.9 ± 10.9 minutes) than in group M (20.4 ± 9.4 minutes).Conclusion and clinical relevanceButorphanol CRI at the dose used does not decrease isoflurane requirements in horses anaesthetised with medetomidine–isoflurane and has no influence on cardiopulmonary function or recovery.  相似文献
