Lumbosacral osteochondrosis has been diagnosed with increasing frequency over the past few years. Nevertheless, poor recognition of the condition continues to lead to frequent misdiagnosis. A study was therefore undertaken over a 12-year period (1986 to 1998) to describe the use of a variety of radiological studies to define the syndrome and the use of different surgical techniques for optimal treatment of the condition. Dogs with clinical signs of cauda equina neuropathy and radiological signs of lumbosacral osteochondrosis were older than 14 months (mean age 6.3 years). German shepherd dogs, boxers and rottweilers were heavily represented. Of the 34 dogs with osteochondrosis in this study, the lesion appeared to be related to the sacrum in 31 dogs (91 per cent) and the seventh lumbar vertebra in the remaining three dogs (9 per cent). Twenty-seven male and seven female dogs were affected (4:1). Out of the 34 dogs, six (18 per cent) were treated conservatively and the remaining 28 (82 per cent) were treated surgically. The outcome of surgical treatment was considered to be satisfactory in 24 (86 per cent) of these latter dogs.  相似文献

The clinical, neurological and radiographic features of thirty dogs with spinal tumours are described. Twenty were investigated at post mortem, and of these, eleven had primary nerve tissue tumours, four primary vertebral tumours, and in the remaining five the spinal involvement was secondary from neoplasms elsewhere in the body.  相似文献

The records of 267 dogs seen at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Teaching Hospital for fractures resulting from motor vehicle accidents were examined to determine the prevalence and types of thoracic wall and pulmonary trauma associated with such cases. Results were analyzed for type and prevalence of thoracic wall and pulmonary injury, and for the prevalence of such injury in dogs with and without extrathoracic injury, in dogs with fractures of single vs multiple bones, in dogs with single fractures of specific bones, in dogs with fractures in the cranial vs the caudal one half of the body, and in dogs with fractures ipsilateral vs contralateral to thoracic injury. The overall prevalence of thoracic wall and pulmonary trauma was 38.9%; pulmonary contusions, pneumothorax, and fractured ribs were the most common injuries. More than 1 type of thoracic wall or pulmonary injury was diagnosed in 57.7% of the cases. Of the dogs with thoracic injury, 24% also had extrathoracic injuries; 16.5% of dogs without thoracic injury had extrathoracic injuries, not including fractures. Of the dogs with fractures of 1 bone, 36.3% had thoracic injuries. Of the dogs with fractures of more than 1 bone, 42.3% had thoracic injuries. The prevalence of thoracic wall and pulmonary trauma was significantly associated with the site of the fracture (cranial vs caudal and ipsilateral vs contralateral); significant association with the specific bone fractured was also seen for some fractures.  相似文献

The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of propofol and thiopental on the plasma oxidant-antioxidant profile in dogs undergoing surgery at doses used to induce anesthesia. The plasma total oxidant status (TOS) and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels increased significantly with time in both groups, whereas the plasma total antioxidant status (TAS) levels decreased with time in both groups. The OSI was significantly higher at the end of surgery than before induction of anesthesia in both groups. The TOS and OSI change ratio of propofol group were significantly lower than that of thiopental group. In conclusion, our findings show that propofol has antioxidant effects in dogs. Further studies need to be conducted to demonstrate the exact mechanism of oxidative stress due to anesthesia and surgery in dogs.  相似文献

The present report describes the clinical signs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, surgical procedure, pathological findings and follow-up in four cats with multiple meningiomas; three castrated male and one spayed female domestic shorthair indoor cats, ranging in age from 11 to 14 years. In three of four cats, clinical signs at presentation were suggestive of a focal lesion. Three cats had two meningiomas and one had four meningiomas. Most of the tumours were supratentorial, one arose from the tentorium and one was infratentorial. The duration of presenting signs before surgery ranged from 10 days to 11 months. Postoperative MRI revealed complete gross tumour removal in three cases. In one cat with two cranial fossa meningiomas, subtotal excision with a small basal remnant (2 x 2 mm) of the ventral part of one meningioma lying on the floor of the skull, was observed. Based on histopathological architecture, six tumours revealed features of a transitional subtype meningioma, and four of a meningotheliomatous meningioma. In each cat, the multiple meningiomas were all assigned to the same histopathological group. The preoperative presenting signs had resolved by the follow-up examinations 4 weeks after surgery in two cats. Long-term follow-up evaluation revealed that surgically-induced or exacerbated neurological deficits in two cats had completely or almost completely resolved within 8 weeks of surgery. All patients are still alive 12 to 21 months after surgery and no clinical signs of recurrence could be detected at that time.  相似文献

Steroid-responsive meningitis-arteritis is an immunopathological disease in dogs characterised by neck pain, pleocytosis of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and increased serum and CSF immunoglobulin (Ig) A levels. A long-term treatment protocol (four to 20 months) with prednisolone was applied in 10 dogs with the condition. Clinical side effects, changes in blood and CSF values and long-term outcome were evaluated retrospectively. Eight of the 10 dogs were without clinical signs up to 29 months after the treatment was terminated. Long-term glucocorticosteroid treatment appears to result only in mild clinical side effects, such as polyuria/polydipsia, polyphagia and weight gain. All clinical and laboratory changes were reversible after the therapy was discontinued. Elevated serum and CSF IgA levels did not decrease to normal values during prednisolone treatment and were still slightly increased after the therapy was discontinued. A marked decrease in the cell count of the CSF was observed after therapy was initiated, although pleocytosis increased again during relapses of the disease. Monitoring of CSF cell count in dogs with this condition seems to be a sensitive indicator of success of treatment. In addition, older dogs with high IgA levels in the CSF and frequent relapses seem to require a longer duration of therapy and have a less favourable prognosis long term. The reason for high systemic and intrathecally produced IgA levels remains unknown, but seems not to be influenced by prednisolone treatment.  相似文献

The age, type, etc., time of injury, body areas injured, treatment modalities and mortality rates were reviewed in 185 dogs and 11 cats that were bitten by dogs. Male dogs were more frequently bitten than females, and small dogs (< or = 10 kg) were not only the most common victims but also were more likely to suffer multiple injuries. Mortality occurred only in cases with thoracic or abdominal injuries. Exploratory thoracotomy, performed in some of the cases presented with penetrating thoracic injury, did not prove to alter prognosis. Cats are not as frequently bitten as dogs, and are often younger than the mean age of cats in the overall hospital population.  相似文献

The reliability of utilizing cytologic samples for immunophenotyping canine lymphomas was evaluated by a systematic comparison of results from fine needle aspirate (FNA) to needle biopsy specimens stained by immunochemical methods. The specific reactivity of a selected panel of 12 antibodies to cell surface markers and intermediate filaments was assessed in 11 dogs by comparing cytologic to histologic samples. There was excellent correlation of results between immunostained cytologic and histologic samples. FNA sampling is a simple, noninvasive method for determining the lymphoid phenotype in canine lymphoma. In addition, this technique may be useful as a cytodiagnostic aid in differentiating lymphoid from non-lymphoid tumors and in assessing neoplastic vs. reactive or hyperplastic processes.  相似文献

Oesophageal leiomyosarcoma has yet to be reported in dogs. This retrospective case series describes the case management and clinical outcome of four dogs with oesophageal leiomyosarcoma treated by marginal excision alone. Histological features used to determine tumour grade included capsular invasion, percent necrosis, pleomorphism and mitotic rate. All tumours were designated grade 1 leiomyosarcoma. Excision of all grossly evident tumour tissue was achieved in two of the four cases; however, histopathologic evaluation showed tumour cells at the surgical margins in one of these two cases. Two dogs had grossly incomplete excision. Two dogs died from unrelated conditions, one 3 years and 5.5 months after surgery, the other at 65 days. One dog had persistent mega‐oesophagus and was lost to follow‐up 388 days after surgery and one dog is still alive (last follow‐up 405 days after surgery). Despite large tumour size and incomplete excision, surgical removal of low‐grade leiomyosarcomas can result in long‐term resolution of clinical signs.  相似文献

This study aimed to identify potential biomarkers of canine pyometra and their correlations with clinical parameters. First, 90 dogs with pyometra and 26 healthy female dogs were compared. Then, paired samples (before and after ovariohysterectomy) from 22 dogs with pyometra and 9 healthy controls from the initial cohort were compared.Concentrations of acute inflammatory proteins, C-reactive protein (CRP) and serum amyloid A (SAA), and cell-free DNA (cfDNA), were significantly higher in dogs with pyometra than in clinically healthy dogs. Cell-free DNA was the most sensitive biomarker for systemic inflammation, based on the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis (area under the curve = 0.959). In addition, cfDNA and CRP were significantly associated with inflammation and organ injury-related clinical parameters.Following the surgical removal of the inflamed uterus, interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1), and procalcitonin (PCT) significantly decreased, whereas changes in CRP, SAA, and cfDNA were not significant. These findings indicate that cfDNA, CRP, and SAA are potential clinical biomarkers of systemic inflammation in dogs with pyometra and PCT, IL-6, and HMGB1 are potential biomarkers of clinical recovery.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Platelet aggregates are a common artifact in canine blood. Aggregates may affect the accuracy of platelet counts, with important consequences for patient care. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine if platelet counts in dogs were more accurate if blood was collected into citrate instead of EDTA as an anticoagulant. METHODS: Blood was collected from 50 dogs with neoplasia admitted to the oncology service at Cornell University. EDTA and citrate Vacutainer tubes were filled with blood in random order. Platelet counts and parameters (mean platelet volume [MPV], platelet distribution width [PDW], mean platelet component concentration [MPC], platelet component distribution width [PCDW], and automated platelet clump count [APCC]) were determined using an optical-based hematology analyzer (ADVIA 120). Blood smears from each anticoagulated sample were scored visually for platelet aggregates. RESULTS: The median platelet count was significantly lower (median decrease, 27 x 10(9)/L) in citrate-anticoagulated blood compared with EDTA-anticoagulated blood. This was attributed to platelet activation and aggregation: significantly more aggregates were seen in smears of citrate- than of EDTA-anticoagulated blood. Aggregates were typically small and not detected by the analyzer. Also, the MPV and MPC (or density) were significantly higher (median increase, 3 fL) and lower (median decrease, 33 g/L) in citrate-anticoagulated samples, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Platelets aggregate, likely from activation, when blood from dogs with neoplasia is anticoagulated with citrate for hematology testing, resulting in lower platelet counts. Citrate also yields inaccurate results for MPV and MPC, likely because of inadequate sphering of platelets. Thus, we recommend that citrate not be used as an anticoagulant when accurate platelet counts are desired in dogs.  相似文献

Spinal arachnoid cysts were diagnosed in four dogs; two schipperkes and two rottweilers. Myelography showed the cysts to be localised either at the second to third caudal vertebrae or between the eighth and tenth thoracic vertebrae. The cysts were drop-shaped with a dorsal midline localisation, intradural in the arachnoid space, and with a cranial opening. Surgical treatment was performed by one of two techniques; durotomy with drainage or durectomy with resection. As the pathological examination in one case revealed a lining of hyperplastic pia-arachnoid meningothelial cells in the cyst, it was assumed that the cyst originates from a developmental disturbance during formation of the arachnoid membrane. Follow-up studies were carried out from 10 months to four years postoperatively and revealed that there were no further problems in three out of four of the dogs during this period.  相似文献

Background: The microscopic agglutination test (MAT) is commonly used for the diagnosis of canine leptospirosis. In dogs it is sometimes suggested that the serogroup with the highest MAT titer is the infecting serogroup; however, this is not true in humans with confirmed leptospirosis. We sought to investigate the value of MAT results in predicting the infecting serogroup by comparing results across several laboratories and within individual dogs over time. Objectives: To examine the variability in MAT results across different laboratories in dogs recently vaccinated against leptospirosis, and in dogs with clinical leptospirosis, and to investigate variability over time in MAT results in individual dogs with leptospirosis. Animals: Eighteen dogs from a research colony, 9 of which had been vaccinated against leptospirosis, and 17 dogs clinically diagnosed with leptospirosis. Methods: Serum samples were submitted to up to 5 veterinary diagnostic laboratories for MAT titers from each dog on at least 1 occasion. MAT results also were followed over time in 6 dogs diagnosed with leptospirosis. Results: MAT results were discordant across different laboratories in dogs recently vaccinated against leptospirosis and in dogs with clinical leptospirosis. MAT results varied over time in individual dogs with the disease. Conclusions and Clinical Importance: The MAT is a valuable test for the diagnosis of leptospirosis in dogs, but it is unlikely that test results can be used to predict the infecting serogroup. Laboratories offering the MAT should consider participation in a proficiency scheme.  相似文献

The present study compares the analgesic effect of a tepoxalin-buprenorphine combination to that of buprenorphine alone in the 24 h peri-operative period in 20 dogs undergoing cranial cruciate ligament repair, which were randomly assigned to the two treatment protocols (n = 10). Additionally, possible side effects induced by tepoxalin were investigated. Analgesia was compared using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and a multifactorial pain scale (MFPS), by an anaesthetist blinded from treatment. Analysis of the overall VAS-scores showed a significant decrease over time in both treatment groups. The decrease in the two groups was not significantly different from each other. No significant differences were found between the MFPS-scores of both protocols. Potential side effects of tepoxalin were investigated by venous blood sampling before premedication and 24 h after extubation, a buccal mucosal bleeding time test and recording of vomiting, diarrhoea and adverse effects at the surgical site. Analysis of the blood parameters showed that fibrinogen levels were overall higher 24 h after surgery in both protocols, but were significantly more elevated in the tepoxalin group. No significant differences were found for the other blood parameters. Statistically, tepoxalin failed to improve analgesia induced by buprenorphine. There was no convincing evidence that the administration of tepoxalin was not associated with gastrointestinal side effects. There were no significant adverse effects on renal function and primary haemostasis.  相似文献
