Two mitochondrial genotypes have been described for Caligus elongatus Nordmann in Norway. This article reports on the distribution of C. elongatus mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase 1 genotypes from wild fish hosts from the SE Norwegian coast. For comparison, lice from areas with fish farming were included in the study. The genotype distribution of 841 lice from wild coastal (n = 535), wild North Sea pelagic (n = 26), farmed (n = 160) and wild hosts in areas of fish farming (n = 89) is presented. The genotype frequencies of C. elongatus on wild coastal hosts varied significantly between spring and autumn. Lice from these fish show a large proportion of genotype 1 lice in March-June every year. Genotype 2 lice were found more frequently in autumn. Genotype 1 was clearly associated with the lumpfish, Cyclopterus lumpus L. The genotype frequency appeared to be different in areas with aquaculture. Caligus elongatus from farmed fish and wild fish caught close to Atlantic salmon fish farms in Norway were predominantly genotype 1 in autumn. Genotypes of C. elongatus on the SE coast of Norway vary according to season and fish species. Factors involved in the encounter between fish and lice are important for the establishment of lice on their hosts. 相似文献

Although Caligus elongatus is one of two major species of sea lice that parasitize farmed salmon, its epidemiology has not been extensively studied. In this communication, the abundances of the adult stage of C. elongatus in salmon populations from 33 farms in the West of Scotland between 1997 and 2000 have been analysed for evidence of seasonal and annual patterns. The findings indicate that the pattern of C. elongatus is remarkably consistent from year to year, and directly opposed to that reported for Lepeophtheirus salmonis, the other major caligid species. In particular, adult infestations rapidly increase from the start of July each year, and are more prevalent on salmon in the first year of production than the second year. Treatment is seen to have an effect on levels of infestation but it is not clear why this species should have significantly lower levels of abundance in the second year of production. There is also evidence that fallowing has no effect on abundance. Strategic management programmes for the control of sea lice on salmon farms, which are increasingly effective in controlling L. salmonis , may also have to give greater consideration to C. elongatus . 相似文献

Most lice infestations on salmon farmed in the North Atlantic are attributed to Caligus elongatus and Lepeophtheirus salmonis. This study reports findings from time‐series analysis conducted on observations of the lesser‐studied C. elongatus, in four farms on the west coast of Scotland over the period 1996–2000. Least‐squares and Poisson regression techniques were applied to one individual site and to the aggregated data of four sites. Models were fitted and tested for goodness of fit using appropriate statistical methods. Findings indicate that infestation levels are highly seasonal with rapidly increasing numbers after week 22 of the year followed by a steady decline from week 40. Abundance is much lower in the second year of the production cycle than the first. Neither of the models indicated that treatment application has a significant effect on C. elongatus infestations. 相似文献

Ectoparasitic sea lice, Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer) and Caligus elongatus (Nordmann) browse on the skin of farmed Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L.. The resulting lesions cause stress and increase the susceptibility of the fish to secondary infections. In extreme infestations, fish can suffer from osmoregulatory failure and death. The most immediate treatment for the relief of sea lice infestations at fish farms is the use of chemotherapeutants, either by bath or oral administration. One compound which has been investigated for use as a chemotherapeutant is ivermectin. Ivermectin is a member of the avermectin group of macrocyclic lactones. The avermectins are neurotoxins, which have been used successfully in the treatment of helminthic parasitic infections in a number of terrestrial farm animals and also in the treatment of river blindness in humans. Owing to the low solubility of the compound, ivermectin has been administered as an oral treatment with the feed and has been found to be effective for the treatment of sea lice on Atlantic salmon. Ivermectin is poorly absorbed by fish with a high percentage of the administered dose being excreted in the faeces. The highest concentrations of the absorbed ivermectin were found in lipid‐rich organs. The ivermectin remained in the tissues of the treated fish for a prolonged period of time and was excreted mainly in the unchanged form. Ivermectin can reach the marine environment via excretion from the bile, unabsorbed via the fish faeces and by uneaten food pellets and has a strong affinity to lipid, soil and organic matter. Risk assessments have shown that ivermectin is likely to accumulate in the sediments and that the species therein would be more at risk than the species in the pelagic environment. Ivermectin has been shown to be toxic to some benthic infaunal species in single species tests, but there is no evidence that treatment of fish with ivermectin has affected multispecies benthic communities in the field situation. This review paper ends with details of the development and the status of the use of ivermectin in the treatment of sea lice infestations at Scottish fish farms. 相似文献

Proper monitoring of all stages of sea lice is imperative to ensure the strategic timing of treatments. Although sea lice receive close attention and management for production purposes, there are no regulations for the reporting of lice burdens on salmon farms in Atlantic Canada, nor are there officially standardized protocols for conducting sea lice counts in the field. The purpose of this study was to complete a survey of Atlantic salmon farms in the Bay of Fundy, NB, Canada. The survey addressed many aspects of sea lice monitoring and control, including methods for sea lice sampling at the site, types of treatments administered for control of sea lice and management practices and decisions regarding the control of sea lice. A total of 83 surveys were completed from July to December 2002. Twelve of the 60 respondents owned and/or operated more than one site and completed a survey for each of their sites at the time of the interview. The position of individuals surveyed included 48 site managers (representing 63 sites), three site owners (representing 11 sites), eight individuals who were both owner and manager (representing nine sites) and one site veterinarian (representing one site). Surveys were completed on 30 sites from the Limekiln Bay and surrounding areas, 23 sites from Grand Manan Island, 18 sites from Deer Island, six sites from Campobello Island and six sites from Passamaquoddy Bay. Fish farmers, in concert with their veterinarians, generally perform intensive monitoring and control practices. However, there is a continued reliance on emamectin benzoate (SLICE ®) for sea lice control on Atlantic salmon farms in the Bay of Fundy, which raises concerns regarding the potential for sea lice to develop resistance to the drug. 相似文献

Although the gills have been reported as a site for settlement by sea lice attached stages in experimental challenges, the prevalence and abundance of infection on gills have not been reported in farmed fish and have been reported only rarely in wild salmonids. Disproportionate attachment to the gills may be significant in evaluation of new therapeutants and this study asks whether the efficacy data from studies of therapeutants based on experimental challenge can be extrapolated to the fish farm arena. The distribution of chalimus on gills, body and fins of farmed first sea year Atlantic salmon were examined in two Scottish sea lochs, each on two occasions (30 fish on each sampling date), fish from one farm with infection with Lepeophtheirus salmonis only and the other farm with exclusively Caligus elongatus. The dorsal fin was the primary attachment site of L. salmonis (50% and 33% in two samples respectively) with 29% and 32% on other fins and 20% and 29% on the body and head. Only one of 56 chalimus (1.8%) and four of 75 chalimus (5.3%) were attached to the gills. In contrast, the chalimus distribution of C. elongatus was predominantly on fins other than the dorsal, including the tail, 74% and 71%, on two sampling occasions, respectively, with only 4.2% and 3.6% of chalimus located on the dorsal fin. The pectoral fins were the most common location with 32%, followed by the tail 23%, pelvic fins 14% and only 3% on the anal fin. None of 287 and 111 chalimus in two samples, respectively, of C. elongatus was attached to the gills. The low abundance of lice on the gills indicated that non‐destructive sampling methods adequately represented lice infection. In three experimental challenges with L. salmonis, the gills were a major attachment location with 19.9–36.3% of chalimus, 9.9–26.9% on the body, 22–27% on the dorsal fin and 19–23% on the other fins. These differences with natural challenge in L. salmonis reported here and also in the literature suggest that the importance of the gills for chalimus location in the experimental model is atypical and an artefact of reduced host swimming speed in tanks that permits copepodids to attach to the gills. In natural infection, the flow over the gills is high and reduced flow is required for copepodid settlement. Greatest reductions (96%) in chalimus bath treated with cypermethrin occurred on the gills with no significant reductions in those located on the dorsal and other fins. It is possible that the efficacy of therapeutants may be higher in chalimus attached to the gills because of the higher concentration encountered of bath therapeutant and extrapolation of efficacy to farms may be misleading and progression to field testing is essential. 相似文献

Escapes of cod ( Gadus morhua) from sea cages represent an economic problem for farmers and a potential environmental problem. We estimate that 0–6% of cod held in sea‐cage farms in Norway were reported to have escaped each year from 2000 to 2005, which is a high proportion compared with salmon. We interviewed employees at 19 coastal sea‐cage cod farms in Norway to investigate both how and why cultured cod escape and to document cage handling and management strategies that were effective in minimizing escapes. Based on the interviews, we describe five working hypotheses that may explain why a greater proportion of cod than salmon escape: (1) cod are more willing to escape than salmon; (2) cod bite the net cage and create wear and tear; (3) net cages have insufficient technical standards for cod culture; (4) cod are placed in sea cages at considerably smaller sizes than salmon; and (5) cod are more popular feed for predators. Preliminary testing of the hypothesis that cod bite netting and create holes was done by placing pre‐damaged net panels with cut twines and control panels inside sea cages. Holes in the pre‐damaged net panels increased in size over a period of 3 months. The type of damage indicated that biting of netting twines was the likely cause. 相似文献

Sea lice are the most economically damaging parasite affecting marine Atlantic salmon production the dominant sector of UK aquaculture. The Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation has published mean adult female lice abundance for four regions for 2011–2013 and for 30 areas in 2013. An analysis of these data shows that sea lice abundance is highly seasonal with values lowest in the first half of the year. Abundance also varies by region, the regional patterns vary from year‐to‐year but overall the highest abundance was found in the northern part of mainland Scotland. While most areas had low lice abundance, in a few areas the abundance was persistently above average; these areas were clustered together. There was no significant year‐on‐year trend in lice abundance, and trends appear to vary between regions. Although previous Scottish analyses have been carried out using data from a large company, this analysis cover 95% of production in all salmon farming regions of Scotland and it can be extended as more data become available. 相似文献

A mark and recapture study of cod in the western Gulf of Maine was conducted to study the seasonal movements of fish, particularly as they related to areas closed to commercial fishing. A total of 27,772 cod were tagged, and 1334 (4.8%) were recaptured with sufficiently detailed recapture location and date to be included in the study. Results indicated that the group is resident to the area and sedentary. Although there were a small percentage of fish (2.5%) that traveled long distances (>100 km), most were recaptured near their release location. There was no linear relationship between fish length and linear distances traveled, and linear distance traveled was only weakly related to days-at-large. For all groups of cod tagged and released in particular areas and months, mean distances traveled were small (<65 km), rates of travel were slow (<0.2 km/day), and rates of group dispersion were <50 km 2/day. There were no recognizable spatial or temporal patterns in the mean angles of travel for groups released in various month/area combinations, and the angular deviations associated with the mean angles were quite large. Although there seems to be little pattern in the movement of cod in our study area, temporal and spatial changes in abundance indicate that movements are occurring. The general pattern was a concentration of large cod into one small, inshore area (Area 133) in both the spring and winter, and dispersion from this area in the ensuing months. Monthly percentages of ripe cod in Area 133 provide evidence for two spawning groups; a winter group that spawns from November through January, and a spring group that spawns from April through July. Thus it is likely that the observed spring and winter concentrations of fish in Area 133 were associated with spawning. Fish in the spring group were the largest encountered in the study. The study also provided some evidence of natal homing, i.e. a return to the same spawning grounds year after year, for the spring spawning group. Although there is some exchange of fish between most of the closed areas, the timing of the closures appears to protect the largest aggregations of cod. 相似文献

Commercial farming of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua L.) is now being developed in several countries. The ecological consequences of cod culture are poorly understood, but recent research suggests that Atlantic cod are more prone to escape from net pens than Atlantic salmon. Here, we describe the movements and the spatiotemporal distribution of farmed cod after escape relative to wild cod, both during and outside the natural spawning season. The experimental design included simulating escape incidents of farmed cod tagged with acoustic transmitters and using an array of automatic listening stations to monitor their dispersal and distribution. For comparison, local wild cod were monitored using the same array of receivers. The farmed cod dispersed rapidly after a simulated escape, they randomly distributed over large areas and their distribution overlapped with local wild cod. Moreover, escaped farmed fish were found at local cod spawning areas during the spawning season. The study also indicated that the recapture rate of escaped farmed cod was high compared with that of escaped farmed salmon. Thus, while our results showed that there is a considerable potential for ecosystem effects caused by escaped farmed cod, mitigating actions such as an efficient recapture fishery for escapees may be possible. 相似文献

The study aims to test whether predigested dietary protein enhances the utilization of formulated diets at weaning, and also whether it stimulates intestinal maturation. In this study, Atlantic cod [ Gadus morhua L.; 41 days posthatch (dph)] and Atlantic halibut [ Hippoglossus hippoglossus L.; 63 days postfirst feeding (dpff)] were weaned onto diets with graded levels of protein hydrolysate. By increasing the inclusion of dietary protein as hydrolysate from 0 to 400 g kg −1, cod increased the rate of survival from 7 ± 1% to 18 ± 2% (82 dph; regression, P = 4*10 −7). In halibut, the survival rate decreased from 57 ± 9% to 22 ± 7% as the inclusion of protein in the form of hydrolysate increased from 0 to 450 g kg −1 (119 dpff; regression, P = 8*10 −5). Growth was not affected in any of the species. Results in specific activities of the intestinal enzymes leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and alkaline phospatase (AP) supported the results in survival in halibut and partly also in cod, by showing increased activities in groups with increased survival ( anova , P < 0.05). The lower optimal level of hydrolysed protein in halibut than in cod is suggested mainly because of a slower feeding practice in halibut, which allows more extensive nutrient leaching before ingestion. 相似文献

The sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi is a major threat to Chilean salmonid farming. Pyrethroids have been used for anticaligus treatments since 2007, but have shown reduced effect, most likely due to resistance development. Pyrethroid resistance is also a known problem in Lepeophtheirus salmonis in the Northern Hemisphere. This study describes the development of deltamethrin resistance in C. rogercresseyi based on bioassays and usage data for pyrethroids in Chilean aquaculture. These results were compared to bioassays from L. salmonis from Norway and to Norwegian usage data. Available deltamethrin bioassay results from 2007 and 2008, as well as bioassays from Norway, were collected and remodelled. Bioassays were performed on field‐collected sea lice in region X in Chile in 2012 and 2013. Bioassays from 2007 were performed prior to the introduction of pyrethroids to the Chilean market. Both the results from 2008 and 2012 showed an increased resistance. Increased pyrethroid resistance was also indicated by the increased use of pyrethroids in Chilean aquaculture compared with the production of salmonids. A similar trend was seen in the Norwegian usage data. The bioassay results from Chile from 2012 and 2013 also indicated a difference in the susceptibility to deltamethrin between male and female caligus. 相似文献

Salmon farming began in British Columbia (BC) in the 1970s and in 2006, aquaculture represented BC's largest agricultural export. Along with this growth in production has been a growth in controversy, including the concern that sea lice originating from Atlantic salmon farms negatively impact wild juvenile pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago. To understand the dynamic interaction between wild and farmed fish, data for on‐farm abundance of sea lice are required. In this study, 33 000 Atlantic salmon from 20 active farms were examined over 3 years. Two species of lice were found: Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi. Inter‐annual and seasonal variations in abundance levels occurred with lower levels of L. salmonis in 2003 compared with 2004 and 2005, while C. clemensi levels were highest in 2003. The abundance of L. salmonis was greater on older farmed fish. The findings are compared with European and eastern Canadian sea lice reports, and possible sources of sea lice on farmed salmon are discussed. 相似文献

During the development of breeding programme for Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L., in Iceland, genetic parameters were estimated for 1402 individuals, which were assigned with DNA profiling to 140 dams and 70 sires. The cod was reared in cages on the eastern and western coasts of Iceland from 2004 to 2005. At the average body weight of 1.8 kg, the estimated heritability ( h2 ± SE) for body weight, gutted weight and the condition factor (CF) were 0.31 ± 0.06, 0.34 ± 0.04 and 0.24 ± 0.06 respectively. Genetic correlation ( rG) in body weight between the two rearing locations was estimated as 0.95, which reflects a low G × E interaction. The estimated heritability for hepatosomatic index (HSI) and fillet yields was 0.061 ± 0.04 and 0.04 ± 0.04 respectively. The HSI and fillet yields were highly genetically correlated with body weight or 0.67 and 0.82 respectively. The genetic correlation between the CF and body weight was estimated as 0.31. There appears to be substantial amount of additive genetic variation for body weight suggesting that selection is likely to be successful. Low heritability for fillet yields and the HSI indicates less promise of genetic improvement. Assigning of parentage to individuals with DNA profiling was 80% successful. 相似文献

In an effort to optimize the efficiency of high‐density incubation of Atlantic cod Gadus morhua and haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus eggs, the per cent hatch of eggs treated with four disinfectants (3% hydrogen peroxide, 1% polyvinylpyrrolidone iodine, 0.1% sodium hypochlorite and a 0.005% antibiotic solution – penicillin/streptomycin) was compared in both species. The per cent hatch of eggs of each species was greatest after a 24 h treatment with the antibiotic solution. The hatching success of eggs treated within the different disinfectant treatments depended upon the embryonic developmental stage in both species. The sodium hypochlorite treatment had the lowest % coverage of colony growth after disinfected haddock eggs were plated onto sterile agar media, highest survival rates to the end of the embryonic period, but the lowest per cent hatch. 相似文献

Proteases play a key role in yolk formation and degradation during embryogenesis of marine fish. This study presents the first clear data on the involvement of trypsin and chymotrypsin activities in the embryogenesis of Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua). Both enzyme activities were shown to be present in unfertilized eggs followed by a significant decline ( P < 0.01) in trypsin activity during the first 4 days post fertilization (dpf). Thereafter, the trypsin- and chymotrypsin activities increased to a maximum around day 9 pf. A decline in trypsin and chymotrypsin activities was observed from day 10 pf with minimal activity just prior to first feeding (day 15 pf). Western blot analysis, using polyclonal antibodies raised to Atlantic cod trypsins I and Y, mostly coincided with the trypsin activity profile. The novel trypsin Y was previously shown to have both trypsin- and chymotrypsin-like activities. Thus, some of the chymotrypsin activity observed in the samples may be originated from trypsin Y. The low trypsin and chymotrypsin activities just prior to first feeding (13–15 dpf) may indicate insufficient digestive function as trypsin has been shown to be a suitable short-term indicator reflecting the nutritional quality of marine fish larvae. 相似文献

Gut‐associated bacteria of fish are known to produce enzymes which aid in digestion. The presence and activities of these bacteria in cold‐water fishes like Atlantic cod are less known. Therefore, we have characterized the activities of extracellular enzymes of GP21 ( Pseudomonas sp.) and GP12 ( Psychrobacter sp.), two bacteria isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of Atlantic cod. Additionally, we examined if these bacteria when delivered through feeds could influence the activity of selected intestinal enzymes. GP21 was able to produce amylase, chitinase, cellulase and protease, whereas GP12 could produce only chitinase and protease. These enzymes were produced extracellularly and they were found to be catalytically active at acidic conditions (pH 2–5) and at temperatures ranging from 15 to 30 °C. Orally delivered bacteria could possibly influence the activity of intestinal enzymes after 40 days, rather than after 20 days of feeding. Thus GP21 and GP12, the potential probiotic organisms, could support digestion in Atlantic cod. 相似文献
