Hygroscopicity of wood impregnated with linseed oil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Summary The reduction in hygroscopicity as spruce wood is impregnated with linseed oil may be accounted for using a molecular exclusion model. On the basis of the model, each linseed oil molecule appears to displace 90 water molecules and occupy 6 hydrogen bonding sites in the wood.Dr. Allen R. Sharp, Associate Professor of Physics at the University of New Brunswick and Dr. Christen Skaar, Professor of Wood Physics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University freely gave essential advice and encouragement during this work. Graphical depiction of the molecular displacement model (Fig. 1) was suggested by Dr. Skaar. Much of the experimental work was carried out by Mr. Wu-Rong Perng, Scientific Technician in Wood Science and Mrs. Monica Snow, Instructor in Wood Science at the University of New Brunswick  相似文献

Falcataria moluccana or sengon is one of the fast-growing wood species widely grown in Indonesia. However, its wood is low quality with low density, and poor strength, durability, and dimensional stability. This study determined the effects of impregnation with monoethylene glycol(MEG)and nano-SiO2 on the characteristics of sengon wood, including its dimensional stability and density.Impregnation with MEG and nano-SiO2 had a significant effects on dimensional stability in terms of the weight percent gain,anti-swelling efficiency, water uptake, bulking effect, and density. The impregnated wood was examined by scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that MEG and nano-SiO2 were distributed homogeneously into cell walls of wood treated with 0.5%MEGSiO2.  相似文献

Leachability, decay, and termite resistance of wood treated with metaborates   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The formation of insoluble metaborates in wood was investigated by impregnating the wood with borax and metallic salts, after which their properties (e.g., leachability in running water and biological resistance) were evaluated. The solubility of three metaborates in acidic solutions was also evaluated. Double-diffusion treatment was carried out to form the precipitates of metaborates in sapwood specimens of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) at room temperature. Water-saturated wood specimens were first impregnated by a saturated borax solution and then diffuse-penetrated with Zn2+, Ca2+, or Pb2+ solution. The precipitates of the three metaborates in the wood proved to be insoluble or hardly soluble in water by the leaching test. With the decay test using a brown-rot fungus (Fomitopsis palustris) and a white-rot fungus (Trametes versicolor) and with the termite test using a virulent subterranean termite (Coptotermes formosanus), the metaborate-treated woods showed generally good decay and termite resistance with negligible mass loss of the specimens. Particularly, the lead metaborate formed in the wood provided superb biological resistance against decay and termite attacks. In addition, the precipitates of these metaborates were found to be soluble in acidic solution, suggesting a way to remove these chemicals from wood when disposing of waste materials.  相似文献

  • ? At present, the production of wood composites mainly relies on the petrochemical-based and formaldehyde-based adhesives such as phenol-formaldehyde (PF) resins and urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins, which are non-renewable and therefore ultimately limited in supply.
  • ? This paper concerns the decay resistance of wood products bonded with a new, environment-friendly adhesive derived from abundant and renewable cornstarch and tannin. To improve the total resistance of the composite against both Coriolus versicolor and Coniophora puteana rot fungi, borax (di-sodium tetraborate) was added in proportions of 0.5%, 1% and 2% (w/w) to the cornstarch-tannin adhesives.
  • ? The results show that increasing the concentration of borax in the adhesive decreased the mechanical properties of the composite. The best way to avoid this problem was to use wood impregnated with borax.
  • ? Biodegradation studies were conducted on new composites, first without any treatment, followed by borax at 0.5% aqueous solution treatment. The results show that wood impregnated with borax, in the presence of tannin and sodium hydroxide in the adhesive improves the total resistance of the wood composite against both Coriolus versicolor and Coniophora puteana rot fungi.

The pattern of decay developing in Ulmns procera killed by Ceratocystis ulmi was examined. Flammulina velutipes had caused some decay and discolouration in most trees which had been dead for more than two years. Decay caused by Pleurotus sapidus was less common. Pleurotus palmatus was frequently isolated from wood in the upper trunk showing no visible deterioration. Trees should be felled within two years of death in order to retain the value of their timber.  相似文献

Vegetable oils provide boron retention of about 30% of initial amount depending on oil drying properties. Linseed oil is the most efficient, followed by soybean oil and rapeseed oil. Durability of C. japonica and F. crenata wood specimens has been enhanced by application of linseed oil alone but not enough to reduce termite’s attack of Coptotermes formosanus. Treating wood with a 1.0% w/w boric acid solution prior to oil treatment protects C. japonica from termite and fungi degradations. Efficiency against termites is mainly due to boron retention by oil but hydrophobic oil also forms a barrier decreasing fungi penetration. Boron efficacy threshold around 0.7 kg/m3BAE, lower than classical boron treatments thresholds indicates that oil water-repellence reinforces boron biostatic effect.  相似文献

Summary An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect and quantify Postia placenta (Fr.) M. Lars. et Lomb. in decaying wood. The fungus was detected as early as ten days after inoculation suggesting that ELISA may be effective in detecting early incipient decay. Decay-induced weight loss in P. placenta decayed spruce blocks was correlated with the absorbance values obtained in the ELISA reaction.  相似文献

Specimens of Scots pine sapwood (Pinus sylvestris L.) and beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.) were treated with an amino-alkyl-functional oligomeric siloxane, a sodium water glass solution and 1,3-dimethylol-4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU). Treated and untreated wood specimens were exposed outdoors without ground contact. After 9?months of outside exposure, all specimens showed discolouration caused by infestations of mould and staining fungi on the exposed wood surface. Fungi grown on the sample surface were isolated and identified by microscopic technique and sequencing of PCR-amplified DNA from the ITS region. Primarily, an infestation by ascomycetes and related deuteromycetes was found. The most dominant fungi were Trichoderma sp. and Epicoccum sp.. An infestation of Aureobasidium pullulans was only detected on untreated and DMDHEU-treated samples. There were only marginal differences of fungal infestation between the two wood species.  相似文献

The bacterial factor in wood decay   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Bacteria and actinomycetes are probably the most common wood-inhabiting microorganisms, certainly they are the most adaptable in terms of environmental influences. When considering them as factors in wood decay they may be roughly classified into four groups for convenience and ease of comparison. 1. Those bacteria which affect the permeability to liquids of wood but have no significant effect on strength properties.—2. Those types which attack the wood structure.—3. Bacteria which only function as integral members of the total microflora and are associated in the ultimate breakdown of the wood.—4. The passive colonizers which have no effect upon the wood at all but which have a marked influence on the remainder of the population by their antagonistic activities.—As bacteria and actinomycetes cetes have previously been held to be of minor importance in the field of wood degradation, these microorganisms are discussed in terms of the above four groups in an attempt to bring out their true importance.  相似文献

Effects of densification of poplar wood (Populus nigra) impregnated with nano-aluminum oxide (NA) and pre-treated with water vapor for 4 and 6 h were investigated in the present study. Physical and mechanical properties of treated poplar wood were measured according to the ASTM D-143 standard specifications, and then compared with the untreated specimens. Results showed significant improvement in all properties as a result of densification. A 4-h vapor pre-treatment improved effects on both physical and mechanical properties. When the duration of vapor-treatment increased to 6 h, wood polymers degraded to the extent that the improvements due to the vapor pre-treatment decreased substantially, though the final results were still significant improvements compared with the control specimens. High thermal conductivity coefficient of NA slightly but not significantly improved properties. Due to the high spring-back after 15 days, densified poplar is not recommended for applications in which densified wood will be exposed for long periods to high humidity or to direct water.  相似文献

The importance of copper/amine based preservatives is increasing. Leaching of copper from wood preserved with these solutions is still higher than leaching from wood impregnated with copper chromium ones. In order to decrease leaching, different carboxylic acids (octanoic, 2-ethylhexanoic, decanoic) were added to copper/amine/boron aqueous solutions. An experiment of leaching of copper from Norway spruce was performed according to the modified standard procedure (EN 1250). Results confirmed that carboxylic acids significantly improve copper fixation. The best fixation was determined in specimens impregnated with the preservative solutions consisting of copper, ethanolamine, boric acid and octanoic acid. From such wood, only 1.6% of copper was leached.  相似文献

A study of self-binding fibreboards pressed without synthetic adhesives is reported. The board samples of steam-exploded grey alder (Alnus incana L. Moench) particles hot-pressed under a variety of conditions including moisture content of the mat (8% and 12%), temperature (150°C, 160°C, 170°C and 180°C) and pressure (0.2–8 MPa) are tested for moisture resistance (standard EN 1087-1), decay resistance (standard ENV 12038) and reaction to fire performance (ISO 5660-1). The moisture resistance of the board samples is found to satisfy the standard EN 622-5 for load-bearing medium-density fibreboard for use in humid conditions (MDF.HLS). The tested board samples are not fully resistant to the Trametes versicolor fungus, the mass loss of specimens exceeding 3%. Reaction to fire performance of the self-binding board evaluated by the average rate of heat emission being by about 25% higher is worse compared with MDF.HLS.  相似文献

Nailed timber joints are widely used in timber structures, and their deterioration may cause significant damage. We investigated the withdrawal strength of joints using steel wire nails in specimens exposed to a brown-rot fungus. We also examined the effects of nail corrosion on withdrawal strength, because high humidity conditions accelerate not only wood decay but also the corrosion of nails. We found that nail corrosion increased the withdrawal strength. The ratios of withdrawal strength of nailed joints with rusted nails to that of joints with a minimally rusted nails were 1.47 and 1.56 in joints nailed in radial and tangential directions to annual rings, respectively. Withdrawal strength, excluding the effects of nail corrosion, had a negative correlation with mass loss and Pilodyn-pin-penetration-depth-ratio. We estimated the withdrawal strength of the nailed joint with decayed wood and rusted nails by multiplying the values from the empirical formula (obtained from mass loss and Pilodyn-pin-penetration-depth-ratio) by 1.47 and 1.56 for joints nailed in radial and tangential direction to annual rings, respectively.  相似文献

Four field trials were conducted with wood modified with dimethyloldihydroxy-ethyleneurea (DMDHEU) in contact with subterranean termites. Trials 1 to 3 were conducted with Coptotermes acinaciformis (Froggatt); 1 and 2 in south-east Queensland, and 3 in northern Queensland, Australia. Trial 4 was conducted in northern Queensland with Mastotermes darwiniensis (Froggatt). Four timber species (Scots pine, beech, Slash pine and Spotted gum) and two levels (1.3 M and 2.3 M) of DMDHEU were used. The tests were validated. DMDHEU successfully prevented damage by C. acinaciformis in south-east Queensland, but not in northern Queensland. It also did not protect the wood against M. darwiniensis. Except for beech in trial 4, DMDHEU led to reduced mass losses caused by termite attack compared to the unmodified feeder stakes. Slash pine (in trials 1 and 3) and Spotted gum (in trial 1) presented low mass losses. Modification of Scots pine was more effective against termite damage than the modification of beech.  相似文献

Summary The distribution of Cu, Cr and As in the walls of tracheids of Scots pine impregnated with Tanalith C at a retention of 2.5 lb/ft3 has been examined at the submicroscopic level in the electron microscope microanalyser, EMMA-4, using the absolute method, as well as in the conventional electron microscope. All three elements are present in all regions examined (probe area 0.2 m diameter). The concentration of Cu ranges from 0.4–0.9% (w/w), that of Cr is about 0.8%, while As ranges from 2%–2.6%. The morphology of this fine deposit is clearly dictated by the run of the cellulose microfibrils. There is in the wall an occasional coarse deposit, almost entirely copper, and the inner face of the tracheid wall is covered by a thin layer 20–30 m thick which contains all these elements at high concentration.  相似文献

Sapwood blocks of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) and akamatsu (Pinus densiflora) were coated with Zn/Al (45%/55%) alloy metal at thicknesses of 20–30, 90–100, and 180–200m by an arc spray gun. They were served for choice and no-choice tests with a brown rot fungus (Fomitopsis palustris), a white rot fungus (Trametes versicolor), and a pest termite (Coptotermes formosanus). Coating thickness of 20–30m was enough to prevent attacks by both test fungi, whereas 90–100m thickness was needed for protection against termite attacks. Exfoliation of the coating layers was observed during the wet-dry process in the tests. The results suggested that Zn-Al alloy metal coating treatment was applicable as an alternative method for the protection of timbers from biological deterioration when combined with an additional treatment creating a vapor barrier. This research was presented at the 48th annual meeting of the Japan Wood Research Society, Shizuoka, April 1998  相似文献
