Four dose levels of novobiocin (50, 200, 400, 600 mg) were compared with no drug for the intramammary treatment of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae and other streptococcal infections present in the udder of dairy cows at the initiation of the dry period. Treatment success was evaluated by comparing the microbiological status of duplicate pretreatment quarter milk samples collected at drying off with the microbiological status of duplicate quarter milk samples collected four to ten days postcalving. Infection status of 1318 cows in 75 herds in five geographic locations was determined. Treatment effects on infected cows were evaluated by least squares analysis of variance with treatment, herd, lactation number, days dry and milk production at drying off considered as variables. The dose of 400 mg novobiocin per quarter was demonstrated to be significantly more effective (P < 0.05) than no drug and significantly better than (P < 0.05) or equal to the other doses for curing infections caused by S. aureus, S. agalactiae and other streptococci. A significant reduction (P < 0.05) in the overall rate of new udder infections acquired during the dry period was observed in cows treated with ≥ 200 mg novobiocin at drying off. The data supported the conclusion that the cow rather than the quarter is the appropriate experimental unit in the evaluation of intramammary mastitis treatments. Herd and lactation number were the most significant variables affecting cures.  相似文献

Four strategies for selecting cows for intramammary therapy with benzathine cloxacillin at drying off were compared in 12 Victorian dairy herds. The bacteriological status of all quarters of all (1044) cows was determined just before drying off, within 2 d of calving, and again 3 to 5 months after calving. All cases of clinical mastitis (from calving to mid-lactation) were recorded. Cows not infected at drying off were allocated randomly to 2 subgroups of approximately 350 cows each: not infected, not treated (NI-NT), or not infected, all quarters treated (NI-AT). New infection rates in the dry period (3.8% for NI-NT vs 2.1% for NI-AT) and in early lactation (4.1% for NI-NT vs 3.9% for NI-AT) were low and these differences were not significant. Incidence of clinical mastitis in early lactation was almost 50% higher for the treated group of uninfected cows compared with the untreated group (0.05 less than p less than 0.1). Cows infected in one or more quarters at drying off were split randomly into 2 subgroups of approximately 170 cows each: infected, all quarters treated (I-AT), or infected quarters treated only (I-QT). The new infection rate during the dry period was nearly 4 times higher for I-QT (15.3%) due to significantly more new infections by Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus uberis.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a combination of vaccination and extended intramammary antimicrobial treatment would eliminate chronic intramammary Staphylococcus aureus infections in lactating dairy cows. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. ANIMALS: 50 dairy cows with chronic mastitis caused by S aureus. PROCEDURE: Cows were identified and paired within herd on the basis of days in milk, lactation number, milk production, and numbers of quarters infected. Treated cows (n=20) received 3 doses of a polyvalent S aureus bacterin on days 1, 15, and 21 of the study along with intramammary administration of pirlimycin in all 4 quarters once daily for 5 treatments (days 16 to 20). Control cows (n=23) received no treatment. Follow-up samples for bacteriologic culture were collected for at least 3 months after treatment to determine treatment success rates. RESULTS: Significantly more S aureus infections were eliminated from treated cows (8/20 [40%]), compared with control cows (2/23 [9%]). The proportion of infected quarters that yielded negative results throughout the follow-up period was also significantly higher in treated cows (13/28 [46%]) than in control cows (2/41 [5%]). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results indicate that a combination of vaccination and antimicrobial treatment can be successful in eliminating some cases of chronic intramammary S aureus infections in dairy cattle. However, it is important to consider extended treatment protocols carefully because many cows are likely to remain infected with S aureus despite treatment and vaccination.  相似文献

Experimental infections were induced by infusing one of three different numbers of colony forming units of Staphylococcus aureus, strain 305, into 74 quarters of 17 cows, at 30, 15 or five days before drying off. The remaining 26 served as controls. A total of 73% of infused quarters were infected both at drying off and calving, although some changes in status occurred during the dry period. All control quarters were negative at drying off, but two, one in each of two lactations of the same cow, became infected during the dry period. There was no change in infection status during the dry period in 86.5% and 88.5% respectively of infused and control quarters. Disregarding dose size, 18/27, 19/24 and 17/23 quarters became infected following infusion at five, ten and 30 days before drying off. Disregarding time, significantly more infections (88%) followed infusion of a 10(-4) dilution (mean count 3215 +/- 182 S.E.) than with 10(-5) and 10(-6) dilutions combined (65%). It was concluded that a dose of S. aureus, strain 305, consisting of 0.2 mL of a 10(-4) dilution in sterile milk of a six hour milk culture would provide optimum infection levels if no antibiotic treatment were given. Wether infusion took place 30, 15 or five days before drying off appeared immaterial.  相似文献

A clinical trial was conducted to determine whether prepartum intramammary pirlimycin reduces the proportion of nulliparous heifers with intramammary infection (IMI) during early lactation and improves milk production. Quarter milk samples were collected from 428 heifers, systematically allocated to treatment and control groups, 6 to 12 d before the expected calving date and 2 to 8 d after calving. At the prepartum visit, heifers in the treatment group (n = 219) received an infusion of pirlimycin hydrochloride in all 4 quarters; the control heifers (n = 209) received no infusions. Intramammary infection was detected in 69% of the heifers and 33% of the quarters before calving. After calving, the proportion of treated heifers with IMI was significantly lower than the proportion of control heifers (31% versus 45%). Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from 10% of the heifers and 3% of the quarters before calving. After calving, the proportion of IMIs due to S. aureus was significantly lower in the treated heifers than in the control heifers (5.6% versus 10%). Antibiotic treatment increased the percentage of cures and prevented new IMIs caused by gram-positive bacteria after calving. The incidence of new IMIs caused by gram-negative bacteria and yeast was higher among treated heifers than among control heifers. There was no overall effect of treatment on milk production, but there was a significant interaction effect of treatment and the interval between treatment and calving. An increase of 302 kg of milk was observed when antibiotic treatment was applied more than 1 wk before calving. Treatment did not affect the milk somatic cell count on the 1st 3 test days after calving.  相似文献

Udder health problems associated with Staphylococcus aureus infections in dairy cows are difficult to control and antibiotics have limited effects. Lately, more interest has been directed towards ways to stimulate the innate immune mechanisms of the animal for better prevention and treatment of mastitis. The objectives of this study were to investigate if intramammary infusion at drying off with the immune modulator beta1,3-glucan can make the udder more resistant to experimental intra mammary S. aureus infection at this time, and to study if intramammary infusion of beta1,3-glucan into lactating udder quarters with chronic subclinical S. aureus infection can stimulate the clearing of the infection. Another aim was to evaluate the effect of beta1,3-glucan on the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC class II) on mammary leucocytes, measured by flow cytometry, during these circumstances. The results indicated a slight, but not statistically significant, positive effect of beta1,3-glucan at drying off on the clinical and anti-bacterial response to S. aureus infection, but no therapeutic effect of beta1,3-glucan treatment of udder quarters with chronic subclinical S. aureus mastitis. However, the proportion of MHCII+ milk lymphocytes tended to increase after glucan infusion in those udder quarters indicating a stimulation of the antigen presenting ability. To further evaluate a possible preventive effect of beta1,3-glucan infusion at drying off more studies are needed involving a larger number of animals.  相似文献

Initial studies in Louisiana, USA to determine the prevalence of mastitis in breeding age dairy heifers demonstrated that intramammary infections (IMIs) were present in 97% of heifers and 75% of quarters. Most common isolates were Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus, and Staphylococcus chromogenes; somatic cell counts (SCCs) ranged from 12.4 to 17.3 x 10(6)ml(-1). Histologic examination of Staph. aureus-infected quarters demonstrated significant reductions in alveolar epithelial and luminal areas, and increases in connective tissue and leukocytosis, illustrating limited secretory development and marked inflammation. A one-time infusion of various nonlactating cow antibiotic preparations into infected quarters during different stages of gestation but >45 days prepartum resulted in cure rates for Staph. aureus IMI of 67-100%. Mean SCC was 50% lower at calving for treated heifers, and milk yield over the first 2 months of lactation was 10% greater than that of untreated controls. Subsequent multiple herd studies, however, revealed that use of nonlactating cow therapy was beneficial only in herds exhibiting a high prevalence of heifer mastitis and not in low prevalence herds. Results of lactating cow antibiotic therapy infused 1-2 weeks prepartum demonstrated cure rates of 59-76% vs. 26-31.7% in untreated controls. In some studies, milk production during the first lactation in treated heifers was approximately 10% higher than untreated controls, and SCC were significantly lower; however, in other studies, prepartum treatment was successful in reducing prevalence of infection but had no effect on SCC or milk yield during the subsequent lactation. Thus, treatment of heifers is advantageous because the cure rate is much higher than during lactation, there is no milk loss, and risk of antibiotic residues minimal; however, successful therapy may not necessarily result in lowered SCC and increased milk production in all herds.  相似文献

Sixteen Holstein cows were used to test the effect of postmilking teat treatment on colonization and intramammary infection by Staphylococcus aureus on chapped teats. Treatments were (1) chapping the teat and using 1% I2/10% glycerin postdip solution, (2) 1% I2/10% glycerin postdip solution on nonchapped teats, (3) chapping the teat and using 10% glycerin postdip solution, (4) chapping the teat and not using a postdip solution. All mammary glands were free of S aureus teat skin colonization and intramammary infection at the start of the study. Teats selected for chapping were dipped in 1N NaOH prior to 3 applications of S aureus broth culture; cultures were applied at 12-hour intervals on all teats. Treatments were applied after each milking for 30 days and were initiated after the second broth dip. Teat skin swab specimens and milk samples were collected before treatment application. Teat skin condition was scored daily. Nonchapped teats (treatment 2) did not support skin or orifice colonization by S aureus. Treatment-1 teats healed most rapidly and supported less colonization in skin and orifice than did treatment-3 and -4 teats. Teat skin scores and skin colonization were lower for treatment-3 than treatment-4 teats. A correlation between teat skin colonization and teat skin conditions was found. Ewes treated by intramammary infusion of cephapirin benzathine at the end of lactation were less likely to develop new intramammary infections by early in the next lactation. A controlled clinical trial involving 135 treated ewes and 145 untreated control ewes evaluated the prophylactic and treatment efficacy of intramammary antibiotic treatment of ewes at the time of weaning lambs. Milk samples for bacteriologic examination and identification of intramammary infections were collected at weaning of lambs and 1 to 3 weeks into the subsequent lactation. Untreated ewes were 2.6 times more likely than treated ewes to develop new intramammary infections between sampling times. Existence of an intramammary infection in one mammary gland significantly increased the risk of the other mammary gland becoming infected. Treatment also appeared to be associated with a higher cure rate of existing infections.  相似文献

The prophylactic use of a dry-cow antibiotic for reducing the incidence of mastitis due to Streptococcus uberis was studied in four seasonally calving dairy herds involving 378 cows. The treatment was a long-acting dry-cow antibiotic preparation administered immediately after the last milking of lactation. New intramammary infections were identified by comparing the bacteriological status of quarters at drying off with that after calving, or through manual udder palpation during the dry period. The administration of dry-cow antibiotic to uninfected quarters at drying off reduced the overall incidence of new infections with Streptococcus uberis from 12.3% for untreated quarters to 1.2% of quarters (p<0.01). The reduction was significant (p<0.01) for both dry-period and post-calving infections. The susceptibility of uninfected quarters to new infection by Streptococcus uberis appeared to be unrelated to the infection status of a cow at drying off. Clinical infections during the dry period were most prevalent (97%) in quarters identified as having open teat canals. Fewer open teat canals (p<0.05) were observed among antibiotic treated quarters over the first 4 weeks of the dry period. Treated quarters had a lower (p<0.05) incidence of new clinical infection during the ensuing lactation and lower somatic cell counts. This did not affect production levels of milk, milk fat or protein. The results clearly indicated a prophylactic benefit for the dry cow antibiotic treatment against new Streptococcus uberis infections during the dry period.  相似文献

Fifty-one chronically infected lactating dairy cows were used to evaluate the efficacy of extended pirlimycin therapy regimens for treatment of intramammary infections by environmental Streptococcus spp and Staphylococcus aureus. Cows (n = 47) with one or more infected mammary quarters were blocked by parity and randomly allocated to one of three groups for treatment with pirlimycin (50 mg/mammary quarter) as follows: one treatment per day for 2 days (n = 36 infected mammary quarters); one treatment per day for 5 days (n = 36 infected mammary quarters); and one treatment per day for 8 days (n = 20 infected mammary quarters). Four cows with nine infected mammary quarters were included as untreated controls. Milk samples from each mammary quarter were collected 7 days before treatment, immediately before treatment, and weekly for 4 weeks after the final treatment for microbiological evaluation. A bacteriologic cure was defined as a treated, infected quarter that was bacteriologically negative for the presence of previously identified bacteria at weekly intervals after treatment. Efficacy of pirlimycin therapy against intramammary infections caused by environmental Streptococcus spp and S. aureus was 44.4%, 61.1%, and 95.0% for the 2-, 5-, and 8-day treatment regimens, respectively. None of the infections in the untreated control quarters was cured. Significant differences in efficacy were detected between all pirlimycin groups and the untreated control group, between the 8- and 2-day treatment regimens, and between the 8-day and 5-day treatment regimens (P < or = .05). Results of this study indicate that extended pirlimycin therapy was effective in eliminating intramammary infections caused by environmental streptococci and S. aureus in lactating dairy cows.  相似文献

AIM: To determine the prophylactic efficacy of a teat sealer, administered at drying off, in reducing new intramammary infections in the dry period and the following lactation. METHODS: A total of 528 cows with late lactation somatic cell counts <2 00,000 cells/ml was identified in three commercial herds. Of these, bacteriological examination showed 482 cows were uninfected in all four quarters and 46 were infected in only one quarter. At drying off, uninfected quarters were randomly allocated to the following treatments: no infusion (negative controls), infusion with a bismuth subnitrate based teat sealer, infusion with teat sealer + antibiotic, or infusion with a cephalonium-based dry cow antibiotic (positive control). New infections were identified during the dry period by periodic udder palpations and at calving by bacteriological culture. RESULTS: All three infused treatments reduced the incidence of new intramammary infections due to Streptococcus uberis, both during the dry period and at calving, by about 90% (p <0.01). The majority of the infections were due to Streptococcus uberis. For all treatments, a 50% lower incidence of clinical mastitis over the first 5 months of the ensuing lactation was reported by farmers. X-ray imaging of 19 teats showed that the teat sealer material was retained, at least in part, in the lower teat sinus over about 100 days of the dry period. CONCLUSIONS: Closure of the teat canal from day one of the dry period as achieved by the teat sealer was as effective in reducing new dry period infections as the infusion of a long-acting dry cow antibiotic formulation. The lower incidence of new infections in the ensuing lactation among the infused quarters implies that fewer subclinical infections persisted from the dry period. Use of teat sealers at drying off appears to offer the same prophylactic efficacy as the dry cow antibiotic approach.  相似文献

Dairy cows are especially vulnerable to intramammary infection by the bacterial pathogen Streptococcus uberis in the dry period. Use of immunotherapeutic agents at drying off could increase cellular defences in the gland and prevent establishment of new S. uberis infections. This study investigated the potential of infusing recombinant bovine interleukin-1 beta (rbIL-1beta) in the mammary glands as a prophylactic agent against subsequent intramammary challenge with S. uberis in the early dry period. Immediately after the last milking at commencement of the dry period, one cow from each of 10 monozygous twinsets was infused with 10 microg of rbIL-1beta in two quarters and the other twin was infused with the carrier agent, sterile phosphate buffered saline. Twenty-four hours later, the quarters were infused with 10(3) colony-forming units (CFU) of S. uberis. Bacteriology, somatic cell count (SCC), concentrations of specific cytokines and antibody responses were monitored in mammary gland secretions and sera for the next 21 days. Infusion of rbIL-1beta into mammary glands at commencement of the dry period was associated with less new S. uberis intramammary infections, as determined by the number of quarters with bacterial growth. However, high SCC in quarters following infusion of rbIL-1beta masked the full beneficial effect of this procedure.  相似文献

A sterile polyethylene device was introduced in the milk cistern of two mammary quarters of forty dairy cows. The cows were divided into three groups according to the length of exposure of the device in the cistern (3 days, 14 days, 365 days). The somatic cell counts were studied for a year in the first 10 ml fraction of milk and an increase in the somatic cell counts was found in the quarters having the intramammary device, as compared with the control quarters (having no devices). This difference was marked during lactation and prior to the onset of drying off. For the reduction in the frequency of occurrence of new natural intramammary infections, the activity of the device against S. aureus was limited and no activity against S. agalactiae was proved. The proportions of polymorphonuclears, round-cell elements and macrophages were histologically studied and compared for the udder quarters with and without the intramammary body in correlation with the time of exposure of the device to the milk cistern milieu. The most marked differences in favour of the udder quarters with the intramammary device were recorded in the alveoli containing more cells with a significant proportion of polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Small differences were found in the interstitial and subepithelial zone of the milk cistern. The activity of acid and alkaline phosphatase and adenosine triphosphatase was histochemically determined in the tissue structures of the udder and was found not to change under the influence of the device. Leucocytes and macrophages adhering to the surface of the body were observed under scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

Changes in the milk antibody levels against Staphylococcus aureus were measured at the start of an experimental intramammary instillation of either S. aureus (Study I) or Staphylococcus hyicus (Study II). A commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay system was used. Twenty-one Holstein cows were enrolled in Study I and 15 Holstein cows were used in Study II. Pathogen instillation began 21 days before the start of the non-lactating period. Cows received intramammary antibiotic treatment in all quarters immediately after the last milking, the start of the non-lactating period. Lacteal secretions were collected before the start of the non-lactating period, and during the immediate postpartum period in both studies, and during the non-lactating period in Study I. Milk was cultured for mastitis pathogens and S. aureus antibody levels and somatic cell counts were determined from all samples. There was an approximate 2-week delay in the elevation in antibody levels in response to the instillation of S. aureus. Antibody levels remained elevated in cows with S. aureus intramammary infections postpartum, but were below threshold in cows where intramammary infections were cured during the non-lactating period. Antibody levels were elevated by S. hyicus intramammary infections, remained elevated for the first 12 days postpartum, but were below threshold by day 21 postpartum. Cows with incipient intramammary S. aureus infections might be misclassified as false negatives by the antibody test. However, results suggest that cows with S. hyicus intramammary infections that were not cured would not be misclassified if milk is withheld from test for the first 30 days postpartum, as recommended by the manufacturer of the test.  相似文献

Two dry-cow therapy products were evaluated in seven factory-supply dairy herds in the Waikato area. A product containing neomycin sulphate and the benzathine salt of penicillin (Neopen D.C. White; Smith-Biolab) was used in five herds, and one containing benzathine cloxacillin (Orbenin, Beecham) was used in two herds. Non-treated control cows were included in each herd. Both products were effective in eliminating intramammary infections with Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, and Streptococcus agalactiae. Efficacy of dry-cow therapy against S. aureus was 83.8% and 85.2% respectively. Spontaneous cure rate among controls was 30.8% for S. aureus during the dry period. Spontaneous cure rate for Str. uberis was 50%, while dry-cow therapy eliminated 100% and 77.8%, respectively, for the two products. Dry-cow therapy with either product eliminated more than 90% of Str. agalactiae infections while spontaneous cure rate was only 28.6%. These results further support the effectiveness of dry-cow therapy in reducing the level of subclinical mastitis in dairy herds by shortening the duration of intramammary infections.  相似文献

Inflammatory and immunological reactions after intramammary infusion of β1,3‐glucan were studied during the steady dry period and involution phase of the bovine udder. The effects of a single intramammary infusion of two different doses (100 and 200 mg) of β1,3‐glucan were evaluated during the steady dry period. In a second study, the effects of β1,3‐glucan at drying off were studied by using two treatment regimens; a single infusion at drying off, compared with two infusions of the compound, at drying off and again 2 weeks later. Total and differential leucocyte counts were measured in both blood and udder secretions. Additionally, the expression of receptors for CD14 and MHC class II on leucocytes, and the expression of receptors for CD4, CD8, WC1, IL2R and B‐cells on lymphocytes was measured in mammary secretions by flow cytometric analyses. The concentrations of immunoglobulins in udder secretions were measured by radial immunodiffusion. The results showed that a single intramammary infusion of β1,3‐glucan during the steady dry period causes transient enhancement of some aspects of the inflammatory and immune responses. The increases in somatic cell counts, numbers of monocytes/macrophages, and in proportions of CD14 + and MHC class II + leucocytes in udder secretions were dose‐dependent. Infusion of β1,3‐glucan also slightly increased the proportion of CD4 + lymphocytes and the concentrations of IgG1 and IgG2 in dry secretions. Infusion of β1,3‐glucan at drying off seemed to accelerate the involution process through an increase in somatic cells, particularly in the numbers of macrophages, in mammary secretions. The numbers of lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leucocytes, the proportions of IL2R + lymphocytes, the proportions of CD14 + or MHC class II + leucocytes and the concentrations of IgG1 and IgG2 also increased in comparison with untreated controls. Moreover, a second infusion of β1,3‐glucan tended to prolong this response, indicating that this might be an effective means of enhancing the mammary defence against udder infections closer to calving. In conclusion, the results indicate that intramammary infusion of β1,3‐glucan could be used to enhance the defence mechanisms of the bovine udder against infections, especially during early involution.  相似文献

Spring calving Angus and Angus x Hereford multiparous cows were utilized to determine the effects of intramammary treatment with penicillin G procaine (200,000 IU) and novobiocin (400 mg) at the time of weaning on udder health and calf growth after the subsequent calving. Cows were stratified by age and breed and assigned randomly to receive intramammary treatment (n = 99) at weaning or as untreated controls (n = 97). Quarter milk samples were collected at weaning and at 8 to 14 d after calving. Milk samples were analyzed for somatic cell counts (SCC) and mastitis-causing bacteria. Dry cow treatment decreased (P = 0.005) the number of cows infected after calving. Treatment decreased (P = 0.04) the number of cows that developed new infections and reduced (P = 0.03) the number of quarters with mastitis-causing bacteria after calving that were infected at weaning. Somatic cell counts after calving were greatest (P = 0.008) for cows infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Treatment did not alter (P = 0.19) SCC of quarters after calving that were infected with S. aureus at weaning but reduced (P = 0.002) SCC after calving of quarters that were infected with coagulase-negative staphylococci at weaning. Body weight of calves during early lactation was increased (P = 0.006) if cows with intramammary infection were treated at weaning. Treatment of noninfected cows at weaning increased (P = 0.008) adjusted 205-d weaning weights of calves after the subsequent lactation when compared with untreated noninfected cows. We conclude that treatment of beef cows at weaning with intramammary antibiotics decreased intramammary infections after calving, improved udder health during the subsequent lactation, and increased BW gain of the calves.  相似文献

Inflammatory and immunological reactions after intramammary infusion of beta 1,3-glucan were studied during the steady dry period and involution phase of the bovine udder. The effects of a single intramammary infusion of two different doses (100 and 200 mg) of beta 1,3-glucan were evaluated during the steady dry period. In a second study, the effects of beta 1,3-glucan at drying off were studied by using two treatment regimens; a single infusion at drying off, compared with two infusions of the compound, at drying off and again 2 weeks later. Total and differential leucocyte counts were measured in both blood and udder secretions. Additionally, the expression of receptors for CD14 and MHC class II on leucocytes, and the expression of receptors for CD4, CD8, WC1, IL2R and B-cells on lymphocytes was measured in mammary secretions by flow cytometric analyses. The concentrations of immunoglobulins in udder secretions were measured by radial immunodiffusion. The results showed that a single intramammary infusion of beta 1,3-glucan during the steady dry period causes transient enhancement of some aspects of the inflammatory and immune responses. The increases in somatic cell counts, numbers of monocytes/macrophages, and in proportions of CD14+ and MHC class II+ leucocytes in udder secretions were dose-dependent. Infusion of beta 1,3-glucan also slightly increased the proportion of CD4+ lymphocytes and the concentrations of IgG1 and IgG2 in dry secretions. Infusion of beta 1,3-glucan at drying off seemed to accelerate the involution process through an increase in somatic cells, particularly in the numbers of macrophages, in mammary secretions. The numbers of lymphocytes and polymorphonuclear leucocytes, the proportions of IL2R+ lymphocytes, the proportions of CD14+ or MHC class II+ leucocytes and the concentrations of IgG1 and IgG2 also increased in comparison with untreated controls. Moreover, a second infusion of beta 1,3-glucan tended to prolong this response, indicating that this might be an effective means of enhancing the mammary defence against udder infections closer to calving. In conclusion, the results indicate the intramammary infusion of beta 1,3-glucan could be used to enhance the defence mechanisms of the bovine udder against infections, especially during early involution.  相似文献
